Damn Yankees

April 07 - May 07, 2023

“Dancin' Baseballers Dazzle in a Reimagined Production of Damn Yankees."

- Denver Westword

"As presented by Arvada Center, no one will be disappointed by this classic musical and this first-rate production."

- OnStage Colorado

Joe Boyd is middle-aged, out of shape, and worst of all - a Washington Senators fan. One Faustian bargain with the devil later, he’s the team’s new star player. Devilishly funny and full of classic showtunes, Damn Yankees shows that, like Lola, you can get whatever you want - but how far would you go to get it?

Damn Yankees

damn yankees musical tour

Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd, trades his soul to the Devil, also known as Mr. Applegate, for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation, Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life that he's left behind. Joe ultimately outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.

Light, fast-paced and devilishly clever, Damn Yankees is a homerun hit, featuring all-American subject matter and an irreverent sense of humor. The perfect choice for a high school's spring musical or community theatre production, Damn Yankees is a wicked, romantic comedy, sure to please.

Review: Musical Theatre West Hits Another Grand Slam with Fun-Filled DAMN YANKEES

Long Beach's MTW stages an entertaining, high-energy revival that mixes old-school charm with new-school sass.

pixeltracker

When it comes to classic stage musicals that are almost always guaranteed smile-inducing crowd-pleasers no matter where you see it---whether as a big budget Broadway revival or in a local high school auditorium---right up there is the 1955 Broadway home run DAMN YANKEES , the reliably peppy Tony Award-winning musical that cleverly combines show tunes and kick-lines with a Faust-ian tale revolving America's favorite pastime.

Featuring a memorable, now timeless score by the PAJAMA GAME team of Richard Adler and Jerry Ross , and a pleasingly charming (and sometimes surprisingly bawdy) book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop (itself based on Wallop's own novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant ), this cheeky sports-themed musical---which centers around a rabid baseball fan making a risky deal with the Devil himself to ensure his favorite team's victory---is such a buoyant, high-energy theater experience by design and temperament that it usually coaxes assured high-energy acting, singing, and dancing from its assembled ensemble.

So it's not a big surprise, then, that the latest local production of the show currently being presented by Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA is no exception to this expectation.

A truly fun-filled, ecstatically-performed iteration that is enjoyable from beginning to end, MTW's Broadway-caliber production---now on stage at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center through October 30, 2022---is a definite must-see for both fans and newbies of the classic musical.

There's plenty to love about this impressive new production.

Under the highly-caffeinated direction of Cynthia Ferrer (a veteran stage actor herself), MTW's engagingly-paced DAMN YANKEES never lets up being entertaining, providing the audience a steady bounty of humorous exchanges and scenes, genuinely tender moments, and lots of thrilling, athletically-wowing musical numbers dynamically choreographed by Alexis Carra Girbés (paying significant nods to the work of the original production's genius choreographer Bob Fosse ).

Review: Musical Theatre West Hits Another Grand Slam with Fun-Filled DAMN YANKEES

Hearing Adler and Ross' classic score performed live by a full orchestra (a rarity on Broadway these days) is also such a luxe treat here, with musical director Matthew Smedal making sure that the audience gets to revisit and revel in the score's restored splendor (which explains, of course, why patrons were happily humming tunes from the show during intermission and after the final bows).

Visually, the production offers top-notch theatrical accoutrements that include sets designed and reconfigured by Kevin Clowes, vibrant period costumes designed by Amy Setterlund, and brilliant lighting designed by Paul Black. I especially liked seeing the clever idea that the route to and from "hell" is simply a smoky, flame-lined staircase leading down to the dark blackness of the Carpenter Center's orchestra pit.

And, perhaps, best of all, this all-around exceptional production also boasts a lively and wonderfully engaging ensemble cast that moves and sounds as if not only have they been performing these roles forever, but also that they're having a great time with the material.

That palpable sense of fun and cheekiness is bursting out of every corner of this production.

That awesomeness, of course, starts from the top, highlighted by the spectacular leads among its winning company: the reliably awesome, local stage favorite Jeff Skowron who plays the devil -ish Mr. Applegate with an amusingly petulant and dastardly demeanor; oh-so-swoon-worthy triple-threat James Olivas who plays affable rookie overnight superstar Joe Hardy, blessed with matinee good looks paired with a buttery voice; and, finally, the ultra fabulous, Ovation Award-winning Lesli Margherita is here as well, making a bawdy, triumphant return to the MTW stage from Broadway to slip into the role of Lola, the diva-licious seductress aiming to distract Joe with her amusingly sexy, manipulative ways. With her every appearance, especially with the role's signature "Whatever Lola Wants," it's hard to look away---because she truly made the role her own.

The three of them in particular make this production worth seeing, though there are, naturally, other standouts amongst the company.

Review: Musical Theatre West Hits Another Grand Slam with Fun-Filled DAMN YANKEES

The very talented Aurelia Michael -Holmgren---one of the show's many triple-threats---arrives on the scene as Gloria Thorpe, a shrewd, spirited journalist armed with an inquisitive nature that immediately suspects something odd with the sudden meteoric rise of rookie Joe Hardy. Her dizzying dance number "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO" with the super-amped baseball team---led by scene-stealers Daniel John O'Connor (Rocky), Julian Xavier (Vernon), and Josh Alvarez (Smokey)---totally slaps.

I especially appreciated veteran actor Norman Large 's work here as Washington Senators super-fan Joe Boyd---the guy who makes a deal with the devil to see his fave team's victory and ends up magically transforming into the team's spry young ball player Joe Hardy. Teri Bibb is also terrific as Joe's oft-ignored but still beloved wife Meg Boyd, who patiently dotes on her distracted-by-baseball hubby.

One particular number I truly loved was the beautifully-staged fantasy trio between Bibb's Meg, Large's OG Joe, and Olivas' young Joe on "Near To You." That song never really affected me quite as much in previous productions, so it becomes much more of a lovely, new hidden gem to rediscover with how much it resonates here.

But, honestly, this show---and, by extension, this new production---is a hidden gem altogether. The show can't help it... as old-fashioned and traditional-leaning as it may seem, DAMN YANKEES is a funny, predictably heartwarming musical that somehow interweaves a bit of modern cheeky naughtiness in its DNA to balance the sweetness.

Review: Musical Theatre West Hits Another Grand Slam with Fun-Filled DAMN YANKEES

So when we hear the otherwise corny ditty "(You've Gotta Have) Heart," they probably really mean it---both sincerely and with their tongue pressed firmly against their cheek. All in all, this one's a home run for MTW... and this is coming from a person with no affection reserved for sports whatsoever.

REVIEW: "DAMN YANKEES" — Musical Theatre West @ Carpenter Performing Arts Center

Updated: Jun 1, 2023

An Old-Fashioned Faustian Fable with a Baseball Twist

damn yankees musical tour

MAYBE you thought that was a heat wave that hit town two weeks ago? We prefer to think it was Musical Theatre West’s sizzling production of "Damn Yankees," one of the hottest and heartiest we’ve seen in a musical in years. And if that isn't what warmed the weather, it should certainly do a lot to warm you, as they close out their homerun production this weekend.

For a bit over two hours last night, the La Mirada stage was magically transformed to Fenway Park, inhabited by a slick devil, a baseball star hitter, his delightfully engaging song and dance team mates, some funny fans, and a lithe temptress full of shimmying seduction named Lola, who slithers through some seriously hot dance moves.

damn yankees musical tour

“Damn Yankees,” 1955, played to 1, 019 performances on Broadway and won 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Staged in classical Broadway style, including a variety of trunk songs with show specific numbers as well as cornball humor, the musical richly entertains on several levels. The story is set up as a musical fable that uses baseball as the hook, and it’s only the second show (Pajama Game, 1954) that the team of Richard Adler and Jerry Ross penned. It’s also the show that solidified Bob Fosse as a Broadway choreographer of the highest order.

A fanatical middle-aged Washington Senator baseball fan, Joe Boyd, wants his team to beat the New York Yankees so much that he’d sell his soul to the devil in order for that to happen. Suddenly, a dubious Mr. Applegate appears with an offer to turn couch potato Joe into strapping 22-year-old Joe Hardy — the greatest slugger baseball has ever seen — who would lead the Senators to win the championship.

damn yankees musical tour

Joe and the Devil make a deal but only after Joe demands an escape clause where he could conditionally return home to his wife at the end of the league season. In no time at all, all-American boy Joe Hardy quickly become the humble star who ignites the team toward victory, to the chagrin of Mr. Applegate, who is determined to corrupt the innocent player and win his soul in the end. Throw in the femme fatale Lola for a little insurance, with the power to corrupt any man, and no one is safe from their clutches.

Starring in this MTW cast of grand slam talent is Jeff Skowron as Mr. Applegate (Broadway’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Bad Santa 2”); Norman Large as Joe Boyd (“Star Trek,” Broadway’s “Les Miserables,” “Cats”). James Olivas plays Joe Hardy (“Kinky Boots” at the Hollywood Bowl, “American Horror Stories,” “Encore! with Kristen Bell”), and Teri Bibb is Meg (“The Phantom of the Opera,” Broadway and National Tour); Broadway star and Olivier award-winning musical theater performer Lesli Margherita (“Man of La Mancha,” “Zorro, The Musical”) is Lola, who had audiences laughing and cheering for the soft-hearted seductress.

damn yankees musical tour

Simplicity is the key to success with a show that harkens back to a simpler lifetime, and Kevin Clowes and his set design team make basic structures that transform the setting from the dugout of the Washington Ball Park to a quaint and cozy Chevy Chase home with ease. The same brilliant approach is applied to the work of Costume Designer Amy Setterlund: Crisp, ball club uniforms juxtapose sweetly against the sensible 50’s fashion of the poodle and dirndl dresses, tea-length swing dresses with cardigan sweaters and Peter Pan collar blouses, and sparkly red-themed ensembles for the underworld. The dancing, under the direction of choreographer Alexis Carra Girbés, is spectacular, and it's fully supported by a fifteen-member orchestra under ace music director Matthew Smedal.

Production standouts go to “Two Lost Souls,” “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO,” “Heart,” a fast-moving “Who’s Got the Pain?” and a very seductive “Whatever Lola Wants.” Applegate reminiscences “Those Were the Good Old Days” in a pure vaudeville-infused number with apoplectic grimaces and smoldering burns that used to be Paul Lynde's stock in trade (with just a hint of Al Jolson)n as the adroit Mr. Skowron struts his amazing talent here to our delight.

damn yankees musical tour

As the sultry handmaiden of the Devil, who is given the critical job of vamping a Cinderella rookie on the Washington Senators into forgetting his old place by the home fire, swivel-jointed siren Lesli Margherita lights up the stage in a fashion that is rare and refreshing for the role of Lola, manufacturing her own strong brand of sex, even while gleefully lampooning all the basic techniques of the vamp.

Indeed, although brilliant as a dancer and at heating the atmosphere, Ms. Margherita is also an exceptional comedienne. When she sings "A Little Brains, a Little Talent," describing the assets that a lady should have to seduce a man, it is comedy of an order that is so many levels above the ordinary run of stage humor that it comes like a summer breeze. But when she travesties the techniques of seduction in "Whatever Lola Wants," she's as torrid as a West Indian wiggler.

damn yankees musical tour

Mr. Olivas, gorgeous of voice, humble in manner and skilled as an actor, is fully believable as the come-from-nowhere Wheaties box baseball star able to galvanize first a team, then a country. He provides an enormous display of innocence, while realizing that he may not have made the best decision to follow the devil with his rendition of "A Man Doesn't Know." And, even though he has a voice that could silence an umpire, Mr. Olivas doesn't let strength overpower the traces of his middle-aged self, who continues to pine sweetly for his spouse.

Journalist Gloria Thorpe (Lora Lee Gayer) sells the role of newshound Gloria Thorpe with complete brassy professionalism, and kicks up her heels with a lively, acrobatic ensemble of baseball players in the razzle-dazzle song and dance, "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO." Norman Large also bats a thousand in his Old Joe portrayal with an exquisite "Goodbye, Old Girl." And several wild, gut-busting moments of this production are furnished by rabid Red Sox rooters, Sister (Julia Cardia) and Doris (Katie Brown), especially in the “Heart” reprise at the end of Act One.

damn yankees musical tour

Matthew Henersen is solid as Van Buren, the genial, white-haired manager of the Senators, leading “Heart.” Standouts amongst the ballplayers are Daniel John O’Connor and Josh Alvarez as dim-bulb teammates Rocky and Smokey, who lead the standout act two number "The Game."

The whole show really knocks it out of the park…and since baseball season ended officially the first week of October, this show would definitely be a very happy alternative.

Damn Yankees A Home Run Hit!

How far would you go to help your favorite team win? Would you risk your wife, your life, your very soul? Joe Hardy is about to find out, when his despair over the state of the Washington Senators summons a sulfuric stranger with an offer Joe can’t refuse. Featuring audience favorites like, “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO.,” “Heart,” and “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets,” Damn Yankees is a Faustian fun-fest that celebrates love, baseball, and the importance of an escape clause.

A DEVILISHLY CLEVER COMEDY SURE TO HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK! Batter up! Just in time for the thick of baseball season comes the muscular musical about baseball super-fan Joe Boyd. Joe is transformed into a star slugger after he makes a deal with the devil and his sexy associate, Lola, for a chance to lead his home team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. This 11-time Tony Award®-winner, including Best Musical, puts America’s favorite pastime center stage as Joe swings for the fences before realizing the true worth of the life he’s left behind. Will he succeed in his race for glory, return home to the life he loves or be lost for all eternity to the devil himself? The winning score by Adler and Ross and a devilish book by George Abbot feature songs “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets,” “(You Gotta Have) Heart” and many more home-run hits!

Music & Lyrics by Richard Adler & Jerry Ross: book by George Abbot & Douglass Wallop. Based on the novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop

46th Street Theatre - 5 May 1955 (1019 perfs) London Coliseum - 28 March, 1957

A twist on the Faustian legend sees the fanatical baseball fan, Joe Boyd, agreeing to sell his soul to the devil to save his favourite team, the Senators. When the time comes for Joe to pay the price of his success he manages to outwit the devil in this sure-fire musical. Hit songs include "Whatever Lola Wants" and "Heart".

Scene 1: Joe and Meg Boyd, a couple in their forties, are sitting in their comfortable living room in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on a warm evening. Meg is talking to Joe about the weather, but he's obsessed with a baseball game. She sings that for Six Months Out of Every Year," Joe is a great husband, but a lost cause during baseball season, when the Washington Senators take over his heart. The game ends; Joe is furious because his team lost. He wants them to lick those champion Damn Yankees just once. Meg gives up and goes to bed, announcing she has to play bridge the next day. As she leaves, Joe swings at an imaginary ball, and says he would sell his soul for one long-ball hitter for the Senators. Applegate, a mysterious stranger who seems to be a cross between a slick salesman and a song-and-dance man, suddenly appears from the shadows.

Applegate knows of Joe's youthful dreams to play baseball. The stranger does several feats of magic, and enables Joe to touch his toes for the first time in years. Two friends of Meg's, Sister and Doris, pass by, and accuse Joe of talking to himself. Joe realizes Applegate is invisible to everyone but him. Applegate reveals his identity as the Devil, and offers Joe a chance to save the Senators. If Joe agrees, he has to disappear from his present life and become a 22-year-old baseball star named Joe Hardy. A shrewd real-estate agent, Joe insists on an escape clause. Applegate is sure he can make Joe forget his wife, and agrees to let him have one chance to escape selling his soul forever on the 24th of September at midnight. Applegate goes off to call a taxi, and Joe leaves Meg a note as he sings "Goodbye, Old Girl." Although he doesn't tell her where he is going, he insists he loves her. Applegate transforms Joe Boyd into young Joe Hardy, and they leave for the baseball stadium.

Scenes 2 and 3: In the Washington Senators' dugout, the team's manager, Van Buren, is encouraging his players to keep trying to win against the Yankees. His players have talent but they also need one essential ingredient for success: "Heart." As they leave, reporter Gloria Thorpe enters to interview Van Buren. Applegate convinces Van Buren to let Joe try out for the team. Joe amazes the team with his skills, and is hired. While Applegate insists he found Joe in Hannibal, Missouri playing sandlot ball, reporter Gloria probes to learn more about him. In the meantime, Joe has to borrow a pair of shoes-his old shoes are too tight for him. Gloria decides to make him famous: she nicknames him "Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, Mo."

Scenes 4 and 5: Sister and Doris are outside the ballpark trying to see the new baseball sensation, Joe Hardy. Joe, who is now hitting .480, has led the team to second place in the American League. He is in team owner Welch's office complaining about the reporters' nonstop questions about his past. Welch leaves Applegate to reason with Joe. When Applegate scolds him for sneaking around his old home, Joe says he is lonely for Meg. Applegate says he is going to bring Joe a fascinating woman who will make him forget his wife, but Joe insists he isn't interested. He reminds Applegate that Applegate doesn't own his soul until September 24th. Left alone, Joe reflects on all he has given up to join the Senators ("A Man Doesn't Know"). Joe tells Gloria and a group of reporters that the Senators will have the pennant race sewn up by September 24th.

Scene 6: Applegate gets together with Lola, his female assistant. She reports success on her last assignment; she ruined a man's life and got him to jump out a window. Applegate, who actually wants the Yankees to win, has called her in to help with Joe. He fears Joe's escape clause may endanger his evil plot. He plans to let Senators' fans believe their team can win until the last minute. Then he will pull the rug out from under them by letting the team lose, causing the fans to have heart attacks, apoplexy, or commit suicide. He wants Lola to make Joe forget Meg. She assures him she is the woman for the job ("A Little Brains, A Little Talent").

Scene 7: Increasingly lonely and disturbed by Applegate's treachery, Joe returns to his house to see Meg (who does not recognize her much-altered husband), and convinces her to let him rent a room in her house. They share their feelings of loneliness, although she has no idea who he is (Reprise: "A Man Doesn't Know"). Sister and Doris recognize Joe as the famous ballplayer, Joe Hardy. Joe pretends to find money in his room, which Meg is sure her husband left for her. Applegate tries unsuccessfully to stop Joe from renting the room.

Scenes 8 and 9: In the locker room corridor, the players are enjoying their new success. Gloria presses Applegate for information about Joe's past. Applegate brings Lola to the locker room to begin working on Joe. When Joe rebuffs her initial advances, she explains, "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets." Joe is impressed, but he remains true to Meg. When Joe heads for Meg's house, Applegate accuses Lola of using old-fashioned methods. He decides to cause a scandal for Meg because she has a single man living in her house.

Scenes 10 and 11: A group of teenagers and Sister are rehearsing their fan club presentations for a Senators Pep Rally. They reprise "Heart." At the rally, Lola, claiming she is on Joe's side, explains that Applegate made the team lose that afternoon as part of his plan to win Joe's soul. Gloria tells Applegate she has been to Missouri to research Joe's past; she has found out Joe is not really from Hannibal. Applegate suddenly insists that Joe is not Shifty McCoy. Gloria discovers Shifty McCoy was a ballplayer in Mexico who took bribes; she goes off to investigate. Lola performs "Who's Got the Pain" as a member of a group called the "I Love Joe Fan Club." The baseball commissioner calls Welch and accuses Joe of being Shifty McCoy. Joe insists the story isn't true and swears he will clear his name and lead the team to victory.

Scenes 1 and 2: In the locker room, the team members discuss their support for Joe and express their determination to live by the rules, dedicating themselves to "The Game," forgetting any thought of enjoying themselves until the pennant race is over. Joe has asked Meg to meet him outside the ballpark. She apologizes for asking him to give up his room. She says she misses her husband more than ever now that Joe Hardy is gone too. Joe assures her her husband will come back ("Near To You").

Scene 3: Applegate tells Lola that once he has Joe trapped after the 24th, he will make him throw the pennant game. Joe comes in and says he is going to exercise the escape clause on the 24th and Applegate pretends to agree. After Joe leaves, Applegate chastises Lola for feeling sorry for Joe and mourns "The Good Old Days" when evil was in fashion.

Scene 4: At the hearing at the Commissioner's office on September 24th, Applegate says he has a witness coming to prove Joe's innocence who will arrive at fifteen minutes past midnight. Joe says he can't wait. Meg, Sister and Doris appear, pretending to be from Hannibal, and claim they can identify Joe. They convince the postmaster from Hannibal, who has come to the hearing, that he remembers Joe too. At five minutes before midnight, Joe asks to leave the room. The commissioner won't let anyone leave. Meg is giving a speech to vindicate Joe as the clock strikes. Joe has surrendered his soul by default.

Scenes 5 and 6: Lola has knocked Applegate out with strong drinks. She tells Joe she was the ugliest woman in Providence, Rhode Island before she sold her soul to Applegate. Joe says he will find a way to win the pennant in spite of Applegate. Joe attempts to make the best of his new life and kisses Lola. They go off to spend the evening dancing together ("Two Lost Souls").

Scenes 7, 8, 9 and 10: Outside the ballpark, Doris and Sister join a crowd waiting for tickets to the big game. Applegate has awakened and is furious with Lola. He is on his way to the game and intends to make Joe throw the game, even if he has to change him back into Joe Boyd on the field. In the dugout, Lola and Van Buren are watching the game. Joe catches the ball that wins the game as Applegate turns him back into Joe Boyd. In the corridor outside the locker room, the team is looking for Joe, who has disappeared.

Scene 11: Joe Boyd has returned to Meg's house. He finds her crying on the sofa. She joyfully accepts his return. As they sit together reaffirming their feelings for each other (Reprise: "A Man Doesn't Know"), Applegate and Lola appear. Applegate tries to convince Joe to come back and lead the team to win the World Series. Joe ignores him, to Lola's delight.
