Fall tones, cosy cafés, and the opportunity to hide away from the ever-changing weather in one of Amsterdam’s many museums: Amsterdam in October is one of the best times to visit the city, and not just because the golden leaves provide picture-perfect photo opportunities of the city!

Instead, there are fewer crowds and hotel prices are significantly cheaper than in the summer. Here’s your go-to guide for the best things to do in Amsterdam in autumn!

One of my first ever visits to Amsterdam was actually in October, when the leaves were changing and the evenings were crisp. It’s easily one of the best times to visit, especially if you don’t mind a little bit of rain!

terrace of Hannekes Boom restaurant in Amsterdam after a rainy day in October

This long weekend in the city allowed me to develop a new-found love for the Dutch capital; one where cultural institutions were inviting and where long evenings in the many historic bars around the city were spent chatting and drinking beer together with friends.

If it’s your first time in the Venice of the North, then check out my best Amsterdam travel tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands: canal view in the autumn

Amsterdam weather in October

What to wear in amsterdam in october, snap photos of the fall foliage, cosy up in a cute café or bar, discover hidden gems of amsterdam, enjoy the best of amsterdam museums, explore the forgotten hofjes of amsterdam, take a day trip from amsterdam in the autumn, celebrate halloween in amsterdam, planning ahead of time, where to stay in amsterdam, enjoyed reading about the best things to do in amsterdam in october pin this article now, read it again later:.

Like much of Northern and Western Europe, the weather in Amsterdam during October is very changeable and showers are frequent. As such, I’d highly recommend bringing an umbrella and some semi-waterproof shoes in case you get caught out in the rain (check here for our guide to a rainy day in Amsterdam )!

Otherwise, you should know that the average temperatures are highs of 15 degrees and lows of 7 degrees. And if you’re visiting the Dutch capital with the hope of enjoying the best of fall colours, then you should know that the exact time when the leaves change and drop depends entirely from year to year.

Typically, the leaves begin changing colour towards the end of September, carrying on through October, and finally falling from the trees during the beginning of November. As such, for the best of autumn leaves in Amsterdam, plan your visit for mid-October.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands: Canal View

As a result of the less than easy to predict weather, the best way to pack for Amsterdam come early fall is to bring along plenty of layers. What this means is bringing along cute ankle boots like these ones , warm jackets, cardigans, easy-to-layer dresses, and plenty of warm tights.

I particularly love this company for purchasing pretty dresses that blend in perfectly in Europe. You should know before you go that Amsterdam uses the same plug sockets as much of continental Europe, which will be different from what you typically use if you’re from North America or the UK.

Bring along a universal travel adapter like this one to help you get by. And while English is widely spoken, it’s only polite to learn a few words of the local language; in this case Dutch. Bring a simple phrasebook like this one with you.

Quotes about Amsterdam, the Netherlands: beautiful old houses and amsterdam bucket list

Things to do in Amsterdam in October

Amsterdam is easily one of the most beautiful places to visit in Europe in the fall thanks to the abundance of beautiful fall foliage reflected against the calm canals. For the very best photo snaps, I particularly recommend heading to the Jordaan district/

After all, this is where the most historic canalside houses are to be seen in the entirety of the city. In total, there are over 400,000 streets lining the streets of Amsterdam, meaning that fall foliage is never too far away!

For those who wish to see beautiful fall foliage in the context of parkland, it’s worth noting that the biggest park in Amsterdam is that of Vondelpark. Expansive and enormous, the green space is home to a plethora of walking trails, cycle paths (hands down, the best way to enjoy the city) , and even an open-air theatre.

Beautiful canal in Amsterdam

Whether you’re in search of a speciality coffee or wish to sample a local beer, Amsterdam has no shortage of wonderful bars and cafés (a coffee shop is an entirely different thing!) where you can hang out with friends, study, or meet new people!

During my most recent visit to the Venice of the North, I particularly enjoyed frequenting Cafe de Sluyswacht . Housed against the backdrop of De Oude Schans canal and is set within a former 17th-century built canal keeper cottage. They even serve vegan Bitterballen for those who wish to sample a local delicacy with a meat-free twist!

For those who are fans of history and don’t feel like veering too far away from central Amsterdam, Int’Aepjen is a quintessentially Dutch wooden bar where local beers are served in a traditional setting. Reasonably priced drinks can be purchased against the backdrop of a historic drinking establishment where sailors once traded monkeys for drinks!

Cafe de Sluyswacht bar in Amsterdam

Hidden, secret, and oh-so-quirky, there are plenty of unusual things to do in Amsterdam . From miniature canal houses hidden between two brick buildings to the oldest café in the city, and even a museum dedicated entirely to cats, there’s something offbeat to discover for even the most discerning of travellers.

Come October, you’ll be even more delighted to discover that the crowds of the summer dissipate, leaving behind a much emptier city where you can snap photos and explore to your heart’s content.

Personal favourite hidden gems include purchasing the best cookie in Amsterdam from Van Stapele and discovering De Waag, the oldest non-religious building in Amsterdam.

When the leaves start dropping and the evenings become colder, there’s no better excuse than to head inside and explore the many cultural hubs and institutions that the city has to offer.

If it’s your first time in Amsterdam, then you should head to the Rijksmuseum, which is home to many Dutch Masterpieces ( book your tickets here in advance ) . For those who have seen the city before, there are more hidden gems and unusual museums on offer.

For example, the Rembrandt House Museum ( buy the tickets here ) offers the chance to visit the former artist’s home, while the beautifully appointed Willet-Holthuysen Museum ( buy the tickets here ) shows a glimpse into canalside houses of times gone by.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands: Rijksmuseum

Secluded, off the beaten tourist track, and away from the crowds of the rest of the city, truth be told, the most famous of the Amsterdam hofjes is that of Begijnhof. However, what many visitors to Amsterdam don’t know is that there is a wealth of hidden courtyards and corners worth discovering, especially during the autumn when the fall foliage frames the passageways beautifully!

Zon's Hofje tulips and sunny day in Amsterdam

Thanks to its position in the Netherlands with easy transport links to the rest of the country, Amsterdam provides a great base from which to explore the wider Holland region.

Some of the best fall day trips from the Dutch capital for seeing fall foliage include the beautiful city of Leiden (so historic that it’s often filmed to stand in for 17th-century ‘authentic’ Amsterdam) and the beautiful modern city of Rotterdam.

Why You Must Visit Leiden, The Beautiful University City of Holland, The Netherlands

Of course, the last day of October, i.e. the 31st of the month, heralds Halloween. Each year, there are a plethora of Halloween events around the end of the month. Check the full guide for this year here .

If you’re thinking about seeing a lot of attractions and monuments while in Amsterdam, Consider purchasing the I Amsterdam City Card , which includes free access  free admission to 70 museums and attractions in Amsterdam and region and access to public transportation.

To work out whether or not the pass is worth it for you or not, add up the cost of the individual attractions you wish to visit and see if you’ll save money. Find more details here .

As one of the most important cities in Europe, there’s no shortage of places to stay in Amsterdam, though of course this does come at a premium and the city is much more expensive than other cities in the Netherlands !

You should also be sure to book your accommodation as soon as you know your travel dates so as to secure the best rates and also be sure to be able to book the place you actually want to stay.

When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

With cobblestone lanes wrapped around arched bridges and canals,  Amsterdam makes for a charming vacation at any time of year.

All the romantic scenery, coupled with mild weather, makes it hard to decide when you should go. Every travel season in Amsterdam has pros and cons, whether it's sniffing fields of fresh tulips or waiting in a queue to catch a glimpse of a Rembrandt. Here’s all the insider info you need to help you decide the best time to visit Amsterdam.

Amsterdam architecture with rows of tulips in the foreground

March to May is the best time to see the tulips

Tulips bloom in March and bring ecstatic vibes. Despite this, the weather can be unreliable – waterproof clothes are a must. The three-day techno and house festival DGTL takes place over Easter, christening the season for open-air dancing.

Longer days, higher temperatures, fewer crowds, and full blooms – April is an Amsterdammer’s favorite month for good reason. King’s Day , the biggest street party of the year, is an extravaganza of orange outfits, flea market shopping and beer. This is also prime time for visiting flower markets like the famous Bloemenmarkt , which explodes with fresh-cut stems and kaleidoscopic petals.

Terraces and cobblestone streets get busier in May. This month, you can enjoy mild weather and observe the last tulips bloom.

During National Mill Day in the second week of May, you can peek clamber around inside windmills and watermills (look for the ones with a blue pennant). Accommodation and flight prices start to creep up during April and May but still aren't at the peak summer level yet.

With warm weather, lots of daylight and amazing outdoor events, summer is one of the best times to visit Amsterdam. Open-air events are in full swing come June, such as the performing arts extravaganza at the Holland Festival and the calmer but no less beautiful  Open Garden Days .

Take advantage of the longest days of the year in July and swap packed museums for bike rides and sunset drinks on tiny canal-side terraces.

Open-air electronic music festivals are popular with the locals and draw international crowds, most notably the techno-heavy Awakenings Festival (in July) and the progressive- and percussive-minded Dekmantel (in early August in 2024).

This is the peak season for Amsterdam, so queues for attractions and prices for accommodation are at their highest.

Book seats at your must-eat restaurants at least two weeks before travel, and time slots at popular sights like the Anne Frank Huis and Van Gogh Museum at least six weeks prior.

Amsterdam’s temperatures are a bit milder than other European capitals in August, and the city experiences few summer closures in comparison. Pride Festival  also comes to the city in August, bringing a party atmosphere to the streets.

September is one of the best months to visit Amsterdam. Summer is essentially over, but the good weather tends to linger for a few weeks yet. There are many good festivals on the go, such as  Amsterdam International Fashion Week  and  Jordaan Festival , with the bonus of fewer crowds.

Packing tip: Pack layers of clothing – Dutch weather is notoriously fickle, and there can be chilly spells even in summer. A light jacket and small umbrella will mean you're prepared for the weather but won't stand out like a tourist.

October to February is best for budget travelers

Wallet-friendly accommodations make the low season a great time to travel. You won’t freeze thanks to mild temperatures – usually around 37°F (3°C) – although expect some gray and dreary conditions.

October in Amsterdam is a whole cozy mood. Warm, autumn colors erupt across the city’s parks and gardens. Low-season prices start to kick in, and queues begin to dwindle.

Shorter waits for restaurant tables and emptier museums make up for the lack of events – and sunlight – in November. In November's second half, the festive season begins with St. Nicholas’s arrival by boat ( Sinterklaas Intocht ).

December is a magical time in Amsterdam, even if snow is usually nonexistent or turns to slush shortly after arriving. Ice-skating rinks are popular hangouts, and the city goes a-twinkle with fairy lights in the run up to Christmas.

January might be cold and dark, but museum queues are sparse, and downtown areas actually have elbow room. On the third Saturday in January, the Dutch celebrate Tulpendag , a kickoff celebration preluding tulip season with thousands-strong tulip displays along the Dam.

Typically, February – right before tulip season – is the cheapest time of year to visit Amsterdam. With some luck, canals might freeze over and fill up with ice skaters – thinning out the already-low traffic in Amsterdam's incredible museums even more. After marveling at Dutch Golden Age paintings or bundling up for a canal cruise, bruin cafés (brown cafes) are the perfect way to warm up with hearty food and cozy candlelight. Amsterdam celebrates Chinese New Year (falling between January 21 and February 20) with a parade from the Kuan Yin Shrine Buddhist temple in Chinatown to Dam Square.

You can also purchase an upgraded drinks package for even more drink options.

Read more here or purchase tickets for the  Amsterdam Secret Food Tour .

7. Enjoy Stand-up Comedy

If you like improvisational comedy, you might enjoy the  Boom Chicago Comedy Show .

This outing includes 5 - 6 magic acts and an optional magical after-party.

Heineken beer is brewed in the Netherlands and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Amsterdam is the tour known as the  Heineken Experience  which is included with some  tourist passes .

If you’re looking to learn even more about the various brews in this part of the world, consider taking a  3-Hour Beer Tasting tour instead .

Take a look at our post on  things to do at night in Amsterdam  for other activities like these.

9. Get Scared By Halloween

While not a Dutch holiday, Halloween in Amsterdam can be a lot of fun.

If you enjoy clubbing, check out the costume party at Wasteland on October 28th.

There's also a Halloween Parade on the streets of Amsterdam where folks go full-on with the costumes.

Another option is to visit the Amsterdam Dungeons , where you can experience Amsterdam’s darkest, goriest moments, recreated by actors.

TIP: The Amsterdam Dungeons is just one of many popular attractions included in some of the Amsterdam tourist passes.

And Westergasterrein has what is dubbed Holland's number 1 Halloween celebration.

Amsterdam Weather in October

Amsterdam is a pretty mild city year-round. In October you can expect temperatures with highs of 15° and lows of 7° Celsius.

However, don’t be surprised if you get an abnormally warm or cold day. The weather in Amsterdam is very unpredictable and in October you can sometimes get days with highs of over 20° and days of lows around 5°.

Always be prepared for the wind and rain that come often in Amsterdam. Getting rainy days or days with a ton of wind are commonplace , especially in the fall.

In my experience living in Amsterdam, I have seen the month of October full of sun and warm days, and other October that are full of rainy and cold days. The weather is unpredictable but rainy or cold is easy to work around.

Things to do in Amsterdam in October

Enjoy amsterdam dance event.

One of the main draws to Amsterdam in October is the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). This five-day event takes place in mid-October and is Europe’s leading electronic dance music conference.

Plus the world’s largest club festival. As one of the biggest dance music events of the year, it attracts DJs and visitors from around the world. For the entire week of this event, you will find conferences, panels, sound labs, and amazing parties. It is common to see famous DJs like Martin Garrix and Armin Van Burren walking the streets and hosting their own events.

During ADE there are parties and events scattered all around Amsterdam all five nights. The clubs and bars in the city are rented out and host special events you do not want to miss.

Plus, during the weekend is the Amsterdam Music Festival which is a one-night party that welcomes 35,000 people and some of the world’s top DJs. Amsterdam Dance Event is one of the biggest dance music events of the year. Making it something any type of music lover can greatly appreciate. For updates and information on ADE check out their website.

Go to a Street Market

In October the street markets in Amsterdam are still in full swing packed with interesting Dutch items and finds. There are plenty of street markets in Amsterdam to explore such as Albert Cuyp Market, Westerstraat Street Market, Ten Kate Market, and more!

Street markets are the best place to pick up fresh flowers, homemade stroopwafels, clothing, and local foods. It is also a great place to find a travel souvenir to bring home.

Eat the Best Apple Pie at Winkle 43

One of the most famous and popular Dutch desserts is apple pie, and there is nothing better than fresh apple pie in the middle of fall. Apple pie just screams fall with its cinnamon tastes and warm insides, it truly is the ultimate fall treat.

In Amsterdam, you can find apple pie in various cafes and restaurants but none compare to the famous apple pie from Winkle 43 . The apple pie from here attracts tons of people each day to the point that there is a constant line out the door. This is an October treat you don’t want to miss.

Visit the Anne Frank House

A visit to the Anne Frank House is a must no matter when you visit Amsterdam . It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and for good reason.

This house tells the story of a young Jewish girl who had to stay hidden in an attic behind a bookshelf during WW2. She kept a diary during her time in hiding and wrote about her experiences until she was discovered and taken to a concentration camp.

Although she passed, her story and life live on through her diary which was published and is the best selling book.

*IMPORTANT: The Anne Frank House has now limited its amount of guests to 1 million a year. As a result, tickets ONLY go on sale ONLINE on the first Tuesday of the Month*

The exact attic she hid in is now open to the public to enter and learn about Anne Frank and her time in hiding. It is an unbelievably touching place to visit in Amsterdam that will move you and remind you of a past we should not soon forget.

Sample Dutch Cheese

The weather in Amsterdam in October is very hit or miss. You can get lucky and have sunshine and hot days or endless days of rain.

There is no way of predicting it but you have to take what you get and go with it. What’s great about Amsterdam is that there is quite a bit to do indoors so rainy weather won’t impact you horribly.

A unique indoor activity is heading into one of the cheese stores in Amsterdam (there are a ton) to test some of the unique Dutch cheese flavors. There are a ton of different flavors like pesto, beer, and old gouda that are just waiting to be sampled and enjoyed. Plus, if you find one you love you can take it home as a souvenir to share with friends and family.

Go to the Red Light District

The Red Light District is a very controversial spot in Amsterdam that people usually feel pretty strongly about. Despite how different and unorthodox it may seem from “regular” country laws, it is still a very interesting area to explore. The Red Light District has an almost carnival-like feel with neon lights, bars, and people flooding the streets.

Many tourists worry about their safety in the Red Light District but it is relatively safe until about 11 PM, and after this time it gets a little seedy. Also, the word relatively is used because, like anywhere, you should always exercise caution and beware of pickpocketers.

Go to Museum

Amsterdam is not just a beautiful city with unique laws and regulations, it is also a city full of history and culture. As a result, there are a ton of museums in Amsterdam all with captivating pieces of art and diverse points of view. Some of the most popular museums in Amsterdam are:

  • Rijksmuseum – Art from middle ages to present.
  • Van Gogh Museum – Dedicated to works from Vincent Van Gogh.
  • Moco – Museum of Modern Art with pieces from Andy Warhol, Banksy & more.
  • Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam – Modern and contemporary art and design.

But if you are looking for a museum that is a little different than the norm here are some other amazing options:

  • Heineken Experience – Shows how Heineken beer is made.
  • Museum of Bags and Purses – A Museum dedicated to bags and purses from throughout history.
  • Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic Museum) – 17th-century house with a hidden church in the attic.
  • FOAM – Museum of photography.

Walk Around the Jordaan

The Jordaan is one of the most beautiful areas in Amsterdam and is beautiful to walk around in the fall month of October. This area is located West of Amsterdam center and is a more local and high-end area of the city.

It is full of canals with trees lining them which look stunning when the leaves start to change color and fall to the ground. This area is one of the most Instagrammable places in Amsterdam year-round, and really shines in the fall.

The Jordaan is not only for walking around and admiring, but it is also home to the famous 9 streets of Amsterdam . The nine streets are a collection of nine streets that hold vintage boutiques, trendy shops, and cozy cafes and restaurants. It is a very popular place to visit in the Jordaan for picking up some new clothes or enjoy some food or a drink at one of the many cafes.

Enjoy a Warm Drink at a Cafe

Amsterdam is cafe heaven! There are cafes around every corner all with delicious coffees, teas, and of course sweets. In October the weather can be a little bit cooler and if this is the case getting a hot drink to warm up with or walk around with is essential.

Luckily, you can find cafes everywhere and getting a nice drink, and sitting in a cozy cafe is a great way to spend some time unwinding and planning your day.

Have a Picnic in the Park

Picnics in the park are very common in Amsterdam, and if the weather permits in October, it is an awesome thing to do.

There are quite a few parks in Amsterdam, the most famous being Vondelpark, but others like Westerpark, Oosterpark, and Rembrandt Park are also great options. All you need for a nice picnic in the park are some snacks from the grocery store, a blanket, and a bottle of wine.

Go on a Boat Ride

Riding peacefully through the canals of Amsterdam on a boat is one of the best ways to see the city and become a part of the Dutch lifestyle. There are a ton of canal cruise companies for you to choose from but for the best canal cruise experience, it is best to go on a special boat or private boat.

The giant, generic canal cruises are nice for seeing the city, but with a special canal cruise tour, you get extras like drinks and food that make it all the more enjoyable.

Take a Day Trip

The Netherlands is small which is why day trips to other cities is very easy. While visiting Amsterdam in October taking a day trip to one of these other cities is a great idea to see a different side to the beautiful country. Here is a list of all the best places to go on a day trip from Amsterdam:

  • Zaanse Schans
  • & more!

Eat a Fresh Stroopwafel

The most classic Amsterdam sweet that every visitor must try is a Stroopwafel. It is simply two thin waffles stuck together with gooey caramel and it is delicious. In Amsterdam in October you can find these in street markets and specialty shops around the city and get them made fresh right in front of your eyes.

October events in Amsterdam

ING Amsterdam Marathon – Mid October – Since 1975 the city has held a major marathon that has brought in many of the world’s most elite long distance runners. Lately around 25,000 participants have joined in, which hasn’t stopped the Kenyans from dominating the spots on the winners’ podium in the end. Fans of watching a giant and strung-out herd of people running by them might be disappointed to learn that the race mostly avoids the city center. It starts and ends at the Olympic Stadium, which is about 2 kilometers southwest of Leidseplein . The runners do go by the Heineken Experience , Museumplein, and through Vondelpark , so if you want to catch a glimpse head toward those spots. You can get much more information and even register on the official ING Amsterdam Marathon site . The 2009 date is Sunday, October 18.

Amsterdam Dance Event – Mid to late October – This is really two events in one. During the afternoons there is a 3-day conference that brings together most of the important people in the world of dance music together, including many big name DJs and producers. It’s one of the premiere events of its kind in the world, and is best suited for industry professionals. But on those three nights, plus the nights before and after, there is a festival that jams over 40 of Amsterdam’s nightclubs with parties featuring most of the biggest DJs on earth. Those attending the conference get in free to most of the parties, but tickets are available to the general public as well. The parties with the famous DJs tend to sell out early, so you’ll want to plan ahead and buy tickets if you are interested. The 2009 dates are October 21-24, and the parties associated with the festival will go from October 20-25. More information on the Amsterdam Dance Event .

Bokbierfestival (Bock Beer Festival) – Late October – The largest beer festival in the Netherlands happens to celebrate the local variation of bock, which is a brew that is darker and heavier than the lager that dominates most taps in the country. You’ll find more than 50 different seasonal autumn bocks this time of year, made by all the major breweries including Heineken. It tends to be high in alcohol as well, so plan ahead for that. This 3-day festival is held in the former stock exchange building called Beurs van Berlage, at Damrak 277, between Dam Square and Centraal Station. It’s €7 to get in and then €2 for each sample, and there are music performances each evening. The 2009 dates are October 30 through November 1.

October weather in Amsterdam

October happens to be the wettest month of the year in Amsterdam, but don’t get too bogged down by that fact because rain is fairly consistent here for most of the year, and you’ll rarely be met by drenching storms that will force you indoors for long periods of time.

Avg. high 57°F/13°C
 Avg. low 46°F/7°C
 Avg. precipitation 4.1 inches/ 10 cm

Especially this time of year, it tends to be gray most of the time, with light showers on and off. A hat and a decent jacket is usually enough to remain comfortable, although bringing a travel umbrella might be worthwhile as well.

Getting here

Flights to Amsterdam can be found at bargain prices in October, at least compared to the peak summer season. From North America you’ll usually find fare sales starting in August for fall travel, so buying your ticket too early might actually cost you a bit more. From elsewhere in Europe prices are lower than during the summer months, and fare sales are harder to predict.

Where to stay

The high season for Amsterdam hotels used to last into November, so it was hard to find a good deal in October, but in recent years most hotels have switched to computerized load-balancing systems that drop prices when many rooms are available and raise prices as more are reserved. As a result, you can get better deals in October if you book in advance. It’s best to be a bit flexible and search a few hotels to find one that is offering some of their lower prices because the differences can be dramatic. Most of the hostels in Amsterdam continue to have set prices for each month, and October is still high season, but the differences in price between high and low season are minimal, so it’s not worth worrying about.

If you’re yet to explore this popular European gem, you’ll likely want the full low-down on what to expect at this time of year. In this post, I’ll share everything you need to know from what to pack to attractions you seriously can’t miss.

Using my expert knowledge of this beautiful city, I’ll help you craft your ideal adventure. By the end of this guide, you’ll be fully clued up on how to make the most out of your autumnal getaway to the Dutch capital.

Let’s jump right in!

Is the Netherlands worth visiting in October?

Ah, the Netherlands , a country bursting with art, unique charm and an intriguing past. A place where everyone is welcomed with open arms. A place where you can truly be yourself without judgement, but is it worth visiting in October?

Hitting up this wonderful country at this time of year offers a delightful experience that’s bound to captivate any traveller. As the autumn season unfolds, you’ll discover why many travellers (such as myself) fall in love with this European gem.

In October, the landscape in the Netherlands completely changes into autumnal hues and moody vibes. Rainy days just add to the country’s character at this time of year.

The falling leaves create photo opportunities around each corner, turning parks and forests into scenes straight out of a fairytale. If you’re into photography as much as I am, you’ll be in your element exploring this well-loved destination in October.

While Amsterdam is the most visited city in the country, there are many other spots worth hitting up for an autumnal getaway. For example, Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague offer all sorts of fun activities at this time of year.

If you’d prefer to go somewhere a little more off the beaten path, head to Monnickendam, Volendam or Marken instead. Ultimately, the Netherlands is well worth visiting in October. In fact, this popular country has something to offer at any time of year!

Is October a good time to visit Amsterdam?

Absolutely, any time is a good time to visit Amsterdam! Regardless, an October getaway certainly has its perks.

October is considered shoulder season in the city, which means there are fewer tourists compared to spring and the peak summer months (such as August ). You can often enjoy popular attractions with shorter lines and less crowded streets.

Amsterdam also offers a wealth of attractions, activities and events to enjoy in October. Not only that, but it’s one of the cheapest months to explore the Dutch capital…

Is Amsterdam expensive in October?

Another great reason to explore Amsterdam in October ( or November ) is reduced prices. At this time of year, accommodation is much cheaper . If you’re travelling on a budget, this can save you a lot of cash.

For example, I spent just €55 on two nights of accommodation while visiting Amsterdam at this time of year. During summer, you can expect to spend much more than that for one night in a hostel. How wild is that?

crooked-houses-on-the-damrak-in-amsterdam

Amsterdam weather in October

Amsterdam in October generally experiences mild and cool weather, with temperatures ranging from around 7°C to 15°C depending on the time of day. It’s cooler than the summer months but not as cold as the winter, making it comfortable for exploring the city.

However, it’s worth noting that it’s generally windier at this time of year. You can also expect a decent amount of rain with an average of 11 rainy days during the month of October.

At the start of the month, daytime in Amsterdam lasts around 11.5 hours. By the time you reach Halloween, it’s more like 9.5 hours. The clocks also go back towards the end of October.

Although there’s more wind and rain in the city during October, there’s a lot to keep you busy on rainy days in the Dutch capital. Basically, poor weather won’t stop you from having a fab time!

What to pack to visit Amsterdam in October

Deciding what to pack for an autumnal getaway in Amsterdam depends on how you plan to spend your trip.

For example, if you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack warm clothes and comfy shoes. If you’ll mostly be indoors, you can get away with lighter clothing.

What to wear in Amsterdam in October

As a general rule, here are the sorts of clothes you should pack to visit the Dutch capital in October:

  • Jeans and trousers
  • Long-sleeved T-shirts and tops
  • Jumpers and cardigans
  • A coat or jacket
  • Midi skirts and dresses
  • Tights to keep your legs warm
  • Underwear (obviously)
  • Comfortable footwear

You should also carry an umbrella because just as in the UK, the weather can be unpredictable in Amsterdam. I’ve often experienced gloriously sunny mornings before getting caught in afternoon storms. Make sure you come prepared!

Essentials for an autumn trip to Amsterdam

When you’re out exploring for most of the day, there are a few things to carry with you in Amsterdam. First and foremost, carry a lightweight backpack or bag to store your phone, money and other essentials.

Personally, I’ve found a portable charger to be a lifesaver on all of my adventures across the globe. As someone who loves taking photos, my phone’s battery can drain pretty fast. With a portable charger, there’s no need to interrupt plans to recharge a device. Simply keep snapping away!

Snacks are also a necessity, but they can often be pricey if you’re in the centre of the city. To avoid spending a small fortune on a quick bike to eat, buy in bulk and carry some with you each day.

When it comes to payments, Amsterdam is super card-friendly. However, you may want to carry a bit of cash to keep you covered if you experience hiccups with your card.

It’s also handy to have when purchasing small souvenirs as some shops only accept card payments over a certain amount.

Lastly, when it comes to tipping in Amsterdam , it’s best done with cash.

Amsterdam events in October

There are a number of events worth checking out in October, such as:

Imagine Film Festival

The Imagine Film Festival is an annual film festival held in the Dutch capital. It’s one of the most significant film festivals across the continent and is known for showcasing a diverse range of imaginative and thought-provoking films.

Running from the end of October to early November, there’s plenty of time to get involved with the event.

Amsterdam Dance Event

The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is one of the world’s largest and most renowned electronic music festivals. It takes place annually in the Dutch capital and has become a significant event for both electronic music enthusiasts and industry professionals.

Throughout the festival, you can enjoy a wide range of electronic music styles including techno, house, trance and much more. The event typically spans over five days in mid-October. During this time, the city comes alive with electronic music-related activities and events.

If this kinda music is your jam, you’ll be in your element.

Halloween in Amsterdam

Although Halloween is not a Dutch tradition, Amsterdam loves an excuse for a party! If you’re visiting the city at this time of year, you’ll see many bars and stores joining in on the festivities with decorations and spooky vibes.

Many bars and clubs across the city also host Halloween-themed parties. These spots encourage attendees to dress up in costumes. If you head out to join the fun, you’ll find a mix of locals and tourists wearing creative attires. Some venues even offer prizes for the best costumes!

Lastly, some cinemas may host special screenings of classic horror films or Halloween-themed movies at this time of year.

Grachtenrace (AKA the annual canal race)

The Amsterdam Canal Race, also known as the “Grachtenrace,” is an annual race that takes place in the picturesque canals of the city. Dating back to 1951, this particular race has an intriguing past.

The race attracts enthusiastic rowers with over 140 teams taking part each year. With a whole host of distractions such as tourist-focused tour boats, the route can present quite a challenge. Especially if it rains!

Regardless, it’s without a doubt one of the best things to do in Amsterdam if you’re visiting the city in October.

October is a delightful time to explore this vibrant city. As the leaves start to change and the air turns crisp, you’ll find many exciting activities and attractions to fill your time. For example, you may want to experience the following:

Hit up the city’s world-renowned art museums

If you’re a fan of art and culture, don’t miss the many museums and galleries that Amsterdam has to offer. Spots such as the world-famous Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum allow you to appreciate timeless masterpieces from Dutch creatives.

Rembrandt House Museum is another must-see for art enthusiasts (such as myself). Located in the heart of the city, this museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of one of the world’s most renowned painters, Rembrandt van Rijn

The museum is actually housed in the very building the artist once lived in and produced many of his famed works. As you wander around, you’ll gain a deep understanding of Rembrandt’s daily life and creative process.

Other notable art galleries in the city include the Moco Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Cobra Museum of Modern Art (which you’ll find in nearby Amstelveen).

Explore the waterways on an Amsterdam canal cruise

Amsterdam boasts a network of picture-perfect canals that are just waiting to be explored. Not only do they provide an interesting glimpse into the city’s past, but they also allow you to see the Dutch capital from a different perspective.

Throughout your guided tour (which typically runs for an hour), you’ll learn distinctive facts about the city. It’s also a great way to discover neighbourhoods and attractions you may want to go back to. For that reason, jumping on a canal tour is best done on your first day.

There are several tour companies that offer canal tours and while I haven’t done them all, I’ve experienced a fair few. I recommend opting for Lovers Canal Cruises or Stromma .

Experience the city’s cafe culture

Amsterdam has a thriving cafe culture that is deeply ingrained in the city’s social scene. Cafes in Amsterdam are more than just spots to grab a coffee; they serve as communal spaces for locals and explorers to gather, relax, socialize and enjoy a bite to eat.

You’ll find a variety of cafes in the city such as browns cafes, canal-side establishments and picture-perfect brunch spots. No matter what type of cafe you visit, you’ll receive a friendly welcome from the local staff.

As you take an hour or so each day to experience Amsterdam’s best cafes, you’ll get a real feel for the vibe of this bustling city. Just don’t mistake coffee shops for cafes, that’s something completely different…

Visit the world-famous Anne Frank House

If you’re looking for the top things to do in Amsterdam at night, make sure you pay a visit to Anne Franks House . Open until 10pm each night, you can effortlessly tick off another must-visit attraction after indulging in a delightful evening meal.

Although it’s upsetting, this popular landmark offers a thought-provoking journey, steeped in historical significance in the Netherlands. During your visit, you’ll step into the secret annexe and gain a profound insight into the impact of World War II and the Holocaust.

While it can be tough to learn more about the heartbreaking realities endured by Anne, her family, and countless others, I firmly believe that knowledge is key. The museum presents essential facts and vital information, ensuring that you depart feeling enlightened and well-informed.

Simply put, it’s an experience that’s sure to leave a lasting impact.

Tips for visiting Amsterdam in October

Wrap up warm .

As summer draws to a close, Amsterdam sees milder temperatures. As such, it’s wise to pack layers in case of cold days and breeze. While it may be too warm for a coat at certain times of day, carrying a jacket is advised at the very least.

Carry your camera

Amsterdam is photogenic at any time of year, but even more so in October. During the autumn months, fall foliage springs up everywhere in the city and it’s a dream to photograph! Trust me, you’ll find photo opportunities everywhere .

Consider buying an Iamsterdam city card

If you’re visiting the Dutch capital in October, museum hopping is a popular pastime. In fact, it’s one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in the rain. As such, you may want to buy an Iamsterdam city card. These cards give you free entry into many museums in the city.

You’ll also get juicy discounts, free use of public transport and 24-hour bike rental. As so many of the top museums in the city cost around €20 (more or less), it’s well worth considering.

Fancy the full low down on whether or not the card is worth it? Then check out this post .

Wear comfortable shoes

When you’re visiting a city like Amsterdam, you’ll likely be on your feet all day. If that’s the case, comfort is key! I highly recommend wearing good shoes to avoid blisters, pain and discomfort.

I recently partnered with UIN Footwear and their shoes are a DREAM to travel with. After walking almost 25,000 steps in Rotterdam, my feet were still not sore. How insane is that? If you’re looking for your next pair of travel shoes, you seriously need to give them a try.

Full disclaimer: I have previously collaborated with UIN Footwear.

FAQs about visiting the Dutch capital in October

Temperatures are typically quite mild in the Dutch capital in October. However, it does get colder towards the end of the month.

Not exactly. Amsterdam can be quite an expensive city to explore. Despite that, it’s possible to visit on a budget if you really need to. Don’t let the prices stop you from visiting this incredible city!

When it comes to the best time of year to visit Amsterdam, spring and summer are typically the most popular. In spring, you’ll be treated to floral blooms around each corner. In summer, you’ll enjoy the best weather and incredible events.

January and February are typically the worst time of year to hit up Amsterdam. These months are generally cold and rainy which can make it difficult to truly appreciate your surroundings.

Best Time to Visit Amsterdam: Month-by-Month Guide

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on May 29, 2024

Renowned for its countless canals , charming historic buildings and lively cultural scene, the Netherlands’ capital of Amsterdam is a very popular destination. While you can appreciate its architecture and ambience at any time, there are better months than others to visit weatherwise.

Spring through autumn is when most people visit as the city is warmer and the sun is out. Massive celebrations like King’s Day and Pride also attract huge numbers, as do its Christmas markets and Keukenhof’s colourful tulips.

Here we’ll break down month-by-month what to expect from Amsterdam in terms of climate, crowds and cultural events. This will give you a better idea of when to plan your trip to the ‘Venice of the North’.

What’s the Weather Like in Amsterdam?

Wet, grey and chilly for much of the year, Amsterdam has an oceanic climate that is heavily influenced by the nearby North Sea. While the summer months are the warmest, it is still worth layering up as the capital’s weather is notoriously unpredictable.

As it lies below sea level, rain, mist and fog often occur with the city’s numerous canals also creating a chill as the wind blows off their surface. Nighttime temperatures rarely fall below freezing though, even in wintertime, as it is surrounded by three large bodies of water.

Averages of 21°C (70°F) can be expected in summer with that dropping to around 5 or 6°C (41 to 44°F) in winter. As each month sees roughly 13 to 20 days with at least some rain, it’s a good idea to pack an umbrella whenever you visit!

Best months to visit Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Art, history and nightlife can be enjoyed at any time here and people head to Amsterdam year-round, regardless of the weather. The only quieter (and cheaper) months are January through March when the dreary days and colder temperatures put visitors off.

Spring sees numbers shoot up as the blooming flowers make both Keukenhof and its flower markets so colourful to explore. With exciting events like King’s Day and the Holland Festival being held, the scenic streets remain packed until summer – the city’s absolute peak season.

As there are slightly smaller crowds and temperatures are still mild, September and October are great times to visit. December also attracts tons of visitors, despite the cold, dark days, thanks to its magical Christmas markets and massive New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Amsterdam in January

Amsterdam Winter

After the Christmas and New Year’s festivities are over, most people stay away as the city is usually very cold, dreary and wet in January. The Amsterdam Light Festival does brighten up its short, dark days, as does National Tulip Day.

While prices are cheaper and there are no lines at the museums, the low temperatures make walking and biking less pleasant. As clear skies and sunshine only rarely appear, you’ll need to wrap up warmly. Snow sometimes falls but not regularly and doesn’t remain for long.

Amsterdam in February

Amsterdam Ice Skating

February is also the low season as temperatures stay at around 5°C (41°F) and there are no major events to entice visitors to town. There are a couple more hours of daylight, however, and much less rain falls. Hotel prices are cheaper so it can be a good time to pick up deals.

Besides celebrating Chinese New Year in its Chinatown area, you may be able to skate on its canals if they freeze over. Once a common occurrence, conditions are now only cold enough every few years.

Amsterdam in March

Amsterdam Museum

While March is only a few degrees warmer, tourists start to return once the world-renowned Keukenhof Gardens open again. Until the middle of the month though, prices remain low and the city is quieter.

Although there is a bit more sun and a couple more hours of daylight, you’ll need to pack an umbrella as it rains at least a bit for 18 days on average. Ambling about its pretty tulip fields in March is a treat as there are not yet too many people around. At the same time, its Tulip Festival means there are lots of lovely displays dotted all around town.

Amsterdam in April

Kings Day

As Keukenhof’s blooming flowers look even more beautiful in April, tourist numbers shoot up along with hotel prices. The colourful King’s Day celebrations – the country’s biggest party – also attract millions to the capital. Although everything is way more expensive around this time, the countless concerts and endless orange-coated crowds really are unforgettable!

Average temperatures of 12°C (53°F) coupled with 14 hours of daylight also mean you can stay outdoors for longer. Renting a bike is a good idea as both its cherry blossoms and the verdant greens of its surrounding countryside look magnificent. The weather is also drier so you shouldn’t get wet so often. Plenty of people also take cruises along its canals.

Amsterdam in May

Amsterdam Tulips

Just a week on from King’s Day is yet another big event in Amsterdam and the Netherlands: Liberation Day. The warmer, sunnier weather means numerous music concerts and festivals are held all around town. The city’s hotels and restaurants remain quite full with prices being higher as a result.

Up until the middle of the month, you can still visit Keukenhof to see the delightful tulips. Its relatively dry weather and average temperatures of 16°C (61°F) are also perfect for ambling about the center or biking and boating along its canals. Along with April, it is considered one of the best – but busiest – months to visit Amsterdam.

Amsterdam in June

Amsterdam Walking

The city’s packed schedule of events doesn’t let up in June as this is when the month-long Holland Festival takes place. Besides enjoying all the concerts, plays and dance performances, there are lots of other interesting events to catch in Vondelpark.

With so much going on, you can really fill up the long, sunny days with fun things to do. The capital has a lovely, lively feel yet isn’t as heaving as the months both before and after it. As temperatures average 19°C (66°F), many people picnic in the parks or visit the gorgeous gardens of canal houses during its Open Garden Days.

Amsterdam in July

Pride Festival

As people have summer holidays, the sun is shining and the weather is warmest, July is one of the most popular months to explore Amsterdam . Although there is slightly less daylight and sunshine than in June, averages of 21°C (70°F) are great for spending a lot of time outside.

Besides sunbathing in the parks and taking sightseeing cruises along the canals, visitors can party it up at the week-long Pride festival. Due to all the crowds, prices rise with long queues forming at all the main attractions and museums.

Amsterdam in August

Amsterdam Summer

August is peak season in Amsterdam when the restaurants and bars are packed and accommodation prices are at their highest. Countless huge events like Pride, De Parade and the Grachtenfestival draw even more people to the city. Due to this, you’ll have to book your hotels and tickets to the Anne Frank House in advance.

While it is one of the best months to visit weatherwise, the constant crowds in the streets, squares and tourist sights can get a bit tiring. In recent years, regular heat waves have also made walking more taxing as temperatures of over 30°C (86°F) are more common. It still rains around 14 days though on average!

Amsterdam in September

amsterdam terrace

Although the weather is a bit more unpredictable, September is still a popular month to visit Amsterdam. While it rains more, there is a decent amount of sunshine and daylight with temperatures remaining relatively warm at around 18°C (64°F).

Once kids head back to school, prices fall and there are fewer crowds at all its attractions. As such, this is the ideal time to visit the Alkmaar and Gouda cheese markets with fewer people around. You can also try out top dining establishments as part of National Restaurant Week or enjoy exciting performances at both its fun Jordaan and Fringe festivals.

Amsterdam in October

Amsterdam Autumn

Darker, wetter and colder, October is when autumn really sets in! While you’ll need to layer up and take an umbrella around, the glittering golden colors of its trees create some lovely photo opportunities alongside the canals. If you don’t mind averages of 14°C (57°F), cycling about its countryside can also be very nice due to all the attractive autumnal foliage.

As the skies are mostly grey though and there are fewer crowds, spending time indoors at cosy cafes or the many museums, is a great way to spend the day. Apart from the marathon, there is also the massive Amsterdam Dance Event to attend.

Amsterdam in November

Amsterdam Rain

With 20 days of rain on average and just a couple of hours of faint sun, November is one of the least popular months to visit Amsterdam. As the city is quite dark and dreary, wandering around is definitely a lot less pleasant. You’ll want to spend most of your time indoors and wrap up warm when outside.

Hotel prices are much cheaper, however, and there are no queues at its main attractions and museums. Sinterklaas does pay a visit to the city though and its Christmas lights create an even more magical atmosphere about its already scenic streets and canals.

Amsterdam in December

Amsterdam Christmas

December again sees crowds return to Amsterdam for its amazing Light Festival, Christmas markets and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Prices rise with all its hotels and restaurants filling up. The days are much shorter with around 8 hours of daylight as temperatures drop to just 6°C (43°F).

Despite this, there is a very festive feel about the city as locals decorate their front windows and lights brighten up all its squares. There are also ice skating rinks for you to shoot about and plenty of gluhwein and oliebollen to enjoy at the Christmas markets. Although it seldom falls, snow makes for a very memorable winter in Amsterdam.

The best time to visit Amsterdam? Here’s all you need to know to decide right.

Things to do in Amsterdam Amsterdam Travel Guide Best Time to Visit Amsterdam

So, when you're packing for Amsterdam, think layers—lots of them! You'll want to be ready for those cheeky breezes that might just sweep you off your feet, figuratively speaking, of course. And if you’re aiming to catch that glorious explosion of tulip colors painting the countryside, April is your go-to month. Bear in mind that the tulip season isn't the only time Amsterdam shines. Summer brings out the city's extroverted side with festivals and bustling terraces, while autumn cloaks the canals in a palette of warm colors. Winters, although nippy, have a charm of their own, especially if you're lucky enough to skate on the frozen canals. So which season do you think suits you the best? Let me help you decide!

Best time to visit Amsterdam: Know before you plan your trip

If you're looking for the sweet spot for your Amsterdam adventure, aim for that delightful window between April and May or the crisp period from late September to October . During these times, you'll likely sidestep the daily downpours that other months tend to surprise visitors with. The weather is more stable in April, and the city vibrates with color and life, especially with the tulip fields in full bloom and the city's boisterous celebrations like King’s Day.

Best time for sightseeing:

Months of April and May and September to November, the time just before and after summer is great for sightseeing, with fewer tourists around.

Best time for backpacking:

Winter months of December and January, with few tourists and fabulous deals are good for backpackers on a shoestring budget.

Best time for honeymooners:

November to April is great for honeymooners. Although the weather is cold, there's an added advantage of it being shoulder season.

Best time for experiencing the local festivals:

Amsterdam has an active social calendar through the year, but April is the most sought after month with the tulip festival, film festival and many others.

When to avoid Amsterdam?

January and February indeed rank as the least favorable months to explore Amsterdam. Those notorious north-westerly winds can bring chill that bites to the bone, despite the thermometer’s rare dip below zero. It's a time when the city's usual buzz hibernates and the days are at their shortest. So, unless you're a fan of brisk, grey afternoons and the quiet that comes with low tourist seasons, you might want to skip these months.

Amsterdam through the year

  • High Season in Amsterdam Summer months of April to September are considered to be high season for Amsterdam. A high influx of tourists start around the renowned Keukenhof Tulip Festival in mid April and goes on for the next few months. Weather during summers is pleasant with occasional heavy rain. The whole city comes to life as people flock the parks, beaches, canals and cafes. You have to be prepared for long queues for the top attractions of the town .
  • Shoulder Season in Amsterdam During the months of March and September to November, the tourist season starts waning. Weather gets more unpredictable but its still not too cold. Those looking for good bargains and discounts on bookings should plan a trip during this period. There is an additional benefit of not having to jostle around with huge crowds giving you more time to soak up the vibrant vibe of the city.
  • Low Season in Amsterdam Packed with a number of events and festivals throughout the year, Amsterdam hardly sees a low season. However, months from November through mid-December and mid-January through February are the so called low season in Amsterdam. Grey and gloomy skies, cold snowy weather and spurts of rain are characteristic of winters in Amsterdam, not the most attractive weather to be up and about. However, for those who enjoy layering themselves with warm woollens and sipping on mugs of hot chocolate will absolutely love the Amsterdam winters.

10 Things to Do in Amsterdam in October

Autumn arrives in Amsterdam, making October one of the most beautiful months to visit the city of canals. Discover in this post all it has to offer in this month.

10 Things to Do in Amsterdam in October

View of Amsterdam at night | ©Wegdekstreepje

The month of October in Amsterdam is characterised, for the better, by autumn. During this season, the city's parks offer a beautiful postcard view and the streets have a special atmosphere. Although the cold is more intense in October, there are many things to do and see apart from the more typical and touristy.

The cold autumn days are perfect for visiting the city's museums or enjoying a hot coffee in one of its squares. But there are also festivals and celebrations unique to October that are worth experiencing as well as unique sporting events. So what are the best things to do in Amsterdam in October ? The answer is below.

1. Van Gogh and autumn go hand in hand

If you are a lover of art and of Vincent Van Gogh, you will know that autumn was a source of inspiration for the artist . In fact, many of his works are landscapes of this season and the typical autumn colours are very frequent in his paintings. What better time then to buy your ticket to the Van Gogh Museum .

Many of his most important paintings can be found in this museum in Amsterdam dedicated exclusively to the figure of the Dutch-born artist. Van Gogh is one of the symbols of Amsterdam and, in fact, his museum is the most visited tourist site in the city.

Book tickets and visits to the Van Gogh Museum

2. Visit the Jewish Quarter in its holiest month

The beginning of October marks the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur , also known as the Day of Forgiveness. This is one of the most important celebrations in the Jewish calendar and is therefore a good time to visit Amsterdam's Jewish quarter .

This small neighbourhood in the centre of Amsterdam is home to some of the city's most important museums, such as the Rembrandt House Museum and the Jewish Historical Museum . The latter is the perfect place to learn about Jewish culture. During its festivities, this neighbourhood breathes a special atmosphere. If you decide to visit it, you won't regret it, but always do so with respect for its religious customs.

Book your ticket for the Amsterdam Jewish Museum .

3. Honour the memory of Anne Frank and visit her house museum

In connection with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, many people take the opportunity to take an Anne Frank tour of the Jewish Quarter . Some people choose to do this tour to coincide with this key date as a symbol of respect, but it is always a good time to learn about Anne Frank's story.

On this tour, which lasts approximately two hours , you will explore both the Jewish Quarter and Jodenbuurt , and you will learn all the historical details about the time when Amsterdam was under German rule, as well as the importance of the Anne Frank House .

Book an Anne Frank tour of the Jewish Quarter

4. Canal cruise under the autumn blanket

A canal cruise in Amsterdam is a must if you visit Amsterdam at any time of the year. But it is in autumn when, in my opinion, they are at their most beautiful. Thanks to the orangey colours of autumn and the many trees along the banks of the canals, cruising the canals at this time of year is a real treat , especially for those who love photography.

It's not as advisable to do it at night when the temperatures drop, but an evening cruise with dinner on Amsterdam's canals is still a safe bet if you want to enjoy the city's most characteristic sights.

Book an Amsterdam cruise

5. Celebrate Oktoberfest Dutch-style

Although Oktoberfest, the world's most famous beer festival, is a German celebration, Amsterdam is no slouch when it comes to celebrating the festival. The Netherlands and its capital city have always had a strong beer tradition and they don't miss the opportunity to celebrate Oktoberfest in their own way.

The bars fill up and the beer mugs dance non-stop and, to mark the occasion, floating terraces are set up on the canals. The party atmosphere is everywhere and there are special tours of the original Heineken brewery in Amsterdam itself.

Book your ticket for the Heineken Experience

6. If you get caught in the rain, take shelter in the museums

Rain and autumn in Amsterdam inevitably go hand in hand. Don't let the rain spoil the party and take the opportunity to take shelter from it in the city's museums. The capital of the Netherlands could well be considered not only the city of canals, but also the city of museums. There are more than 50 for all tastes and it is one of the best things to do in Amsterdam .

On a rainy day my recommendation is to visit the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk, as these three are located together around the Museumplein Park, and are the main museums of Amsterdam . But, of course, there are many alternatives. Here are some other options:

  • The Dutch Resistance Museum in Amsterdam , which will show you Dutch life during World War II.
  • The STRAAT Street Art Museum in Amsterdam, which, with an area of 8,000 square metres, is the largest space for street art and graffiti in the capital of the Netherlands.
  • Amsterdam 's Moco Museum , or Modern Contemporary Museum, allows you to delve into the street artist's most acclaimed works such as Laugh Is The Air , Girl With Balloon and Barcode .
  • Amsterdam' s NEMO Science Museum , where you'll find a range of interactive experiments in engineering, physics, biology and chemistry for children and adults alike.
  • The FOAM photography museum in Amsterdam, where you will have the opportunity to discover new talents as well as to admire classic artists.

Book your favourite Amsterdam plan

7. Halloween in Amsterdam

Halloween is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and Amsterdam is proof of this. The city of canals is particularly fervent about the 31st of October, and many parties and events are held to mark the occasion. If your trip coincides with this day, you can enjoy many spooky activities around the city.

There are guided tours that tell Amsterdam's spookiest stories and many canals are decorated with Halloween decorations. But the scariest thing to do is to visit the Amsterdam Dungeon. A horror attraction built inside a gothic church that tries to scare the viewer with a theatre and a setting worthy of the best Halloween.

Book your ticket for Amsterdam Dungeon

8. Enjoy watching a rowing race on the canals

Every year since 1986, theGrachtenrace has taken place at the beginning of October. A rowing race along the city's canals , it has become one of the main sporting events on the Amsterdam calendar.

More than 140 teams take part and race 25 kilometres along the canals through the entire city. Fans crowd the bridges that span these canals to watch and cheer on the participants and enjoy the race while eating a bite to eat at the nearby food stalls or terraces. It's definitely an experience with a difference and one to be had in October if you're travelling to the Dutch city.

9. Cheer on the runners of the Amsterdam Marathon...or join them!

The other big sporting event of October, and of the whole year, is the international Amsterdam Marathon . This race has a worldwide reputation and thousands of runners come from all over the world to compete in it. All kinds of activities are prepared around the event in the city and everything is set up for runners and spectators to enjoy the sport.

You can enjoy watching the participants pass by some of the city's emblematic places or if you are a running enthusiast you can join them. In addition, the race is a charity race and the funds raised are donated to non-profit organisations.

10. A hot coffee to fight autumn in Leidseplein square

There are many ways to enjoy autumn in Amsterdam without being cold and safe from the rain. One of my favourite plans in this regard is to go to the cafés on Leidseplein Square. This central Amsterdam square is one of the most beautiful squares in the city and is a regular meeting point for Amsterdammers who go to the cafés on the square.

Here you can enjoy a good hot coffee, relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourists and the autumn chill. When night falls, this square becomes the centre of nightlife thanks to its numerous restaurants and pubs. It's definitely a great place to beat the autumn chill.

Temperatures in Amsterdam in October

As expected, October is a month of pure autumn weather . In Amsterdam this means cooler but pleasant temperatures, more cloudy days and frequent showers. Highs range between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius , while lows hover around 10 degrees Celsius . Temperatures rarely drop below 6 degrees Celsius or rise above 20 degrees Celsius. Overall, it's a pleasant climate to see the city if you're not particularly chilly.

One thing to watch out for is rainfall. The probability of a rainy day increases to 35%. It is more likely, and almost certain, that we will be caught in cloudy skies. Here the probability rises to 60%. But don't let these figures fool you, the temperatures are perfectly bearable and the rainy days make up for the autumnal charm of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam's October tourist numbers

The high season in Amsterdam ends in September, so October is the first month of the low season until May. This doesn't mean that Amsterdam empties of tourists, but it does mean that there is a noticeable drop in tourism. In October you won't have too much trouble finding flights and accommodation and there are fewer queues at tourist attractions.

However, there are occasional days when the trend is the opposite. International events such as the Amsterdam Marathon or Halloween attract thousands of visitors. But if you're looking for a month with a good balance between tolerable weather and quiet crowds, October is a good time to visit Amsterdam.

Book a bike tour of Amsterdam

Amsterdam prices in October

As is always the case, prices are highly dependent on the number of tourists and demand. In the case of October the demand for hotel rooms and accommodation, flights and so on decreases, so prices also decrease . It's not a big drop compared to the winter months, but it's certainly a cheaper month to visit Amsterdam than the summer months.

Book a tour of Amsterdam's Red Light District

What to pack when visiting Amsterdam in October

If you're travelling to Amsterdam in October, you'll need to be prepared for the cold and rainy weather. Therefore, the essentials you should pack in your suitcase are:

  • Warm and preferably waterproof clothing.
  • Comfortable, waterproof footwear.
  • Rain is almost inevitable, but in Amsterdam umbrellas are not recommended because of the strong wind that sometimes blows. It is best to bring a mackintosh.

Why Visit Amsterdam in October

One would think that October may not be the best time to visit Amsterdam — the days are shorter, the temperature is dropping fast and the wind gets colder. That may all be true, but it would also mean you would miss it at one of its most colourful times in Amsterdam. In October everything transforms, the green colour that was covering the canals in September changing into a golden-red blanket. The colours and sounds are different; the sunsets are picturesque and late flowers are blooming for the last time before winter. It’s the time when locals win back their city and they can resume their usual routine. Sounds quite romantic , doesn’t it? And it is, especially for fans or Autumn.

There is one risk that anyone assumes when visiting this country — but around here this is true for any other season: the Mighty Weather . Netherlands’ weather is well known for its unpredictability: the days can be sunny and warm like in the summer, or violently cold with heavy rain; or even both at the same time. I, for one, wouldn’t be scared of that — the golden colour is still there under a grey sky as well as a blue one, and a rain cloak together with a good umbrella will help anyone find their way between museums, pubs and canal boats.

Chances are that you will not see one of those spectacular sunsets, but the charm of the city will still be all around you. A lot of cultural events are taking place in Amsterdam in autumn : from dance contests to documentary film festivals, there is a lot to choose from. And if you are here in October, you must pay a visit to one of Amsterdam’s lovely parks — they are absolutely gorgeous!

Here are some photos to illustrate the October colours of Amsterdam:

September in Amsterdam: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

Dennis Fischer Photography / Getty Images

September is a wonderful time to visit Amsterdam , as you will experience fairly mild weather along with the perks of the shoulder season. Crowds thin out, and airfare , hotels, and other travel costs are usually much lower in comparison with summer rates. Since the weather is generally favorable, albeit slightly rainy, there are many festivals and events held during September that showcase the local cultural scene, from theater to wine.

Amsterdam Weather in September

Fall weather, as a rule, is iffy in the Netherlands, and while there can be days or even weeks of pristine weather, there may also be endless spells of rain. September, however, tends to be one of the milder months, rolling off of the summer highs.

  • Average high: 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius)
  • Average low: 51 degrees Fahrenheit (10.5 degrees Celsius)

The average precipitation is usually around 2.9 inches (75 millimeters) over the course of the month, which is similar to other months in Amsterdam.

What to Pack

Amsterdam weather skews cooler in September, so layers are key. Bring a light jacket around with you during the day in case it gets cold, but wear something light and breezy underneath, in case it gets warm. You might want to wear a sweater underneath that light jacket at night when the temperatures drop. Pants or jeans are appropriate legwear, while you might want to wear tights with dresses. Skip the sandals and go for sneakers, flats, or boots on your feet. Rain is likely at some point during your trip, so it is wise to pack a raincoat or a small collapsible umbrella to keep on you as you tour the city.

September Events in Amsterdam

September is a prime month for festivals and events in Amsterdam.

  • Nederlands Theater Festival: As the annual cultural season draws to a close, the best Dutch theater performances of the season are reprised at this festival, making it easy for travelers to see some of the most popular shows.
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival : Over several days, this less conservative cousin of the Nederlands Theater Festival presents numerous dance and theater performances with “no limits." It is the yearly event for Dutch independent theater and a must for travelers who love the obscure.
  • Draaiorgelfestival (Barrel Organ Festival): Love them or hate them, barrel organs or draaiorgels are a classic Dutch tradition, and Dam Square fills with musicians each year at this annual festival.
  • Open Monumentendag (Open Monument Day): Each year during the second weekend in September, visitors flock to gaze at over 4,000 Dutch monuments and buildings. The public is invited to explore their historic premises, free of charge, during the gathering.
  • Amsterdam City Swim: This charity event sees 2,500 swimmers brave the chilly waters of Amsterdam's canals each September, swimming a 1.2-mile course through the city center. Proceeds from the swimmers' fundraising efforts benefit ALS research.
  • Amsterdam Wine Festival: Held each spring and fall, the Amsterdam Wine Festival has tastings and pairings galore, plus non-wine-related activities like DJ nights and other concerts. For the fall edition, the festival celebrates the harvest season of wines from the northern hemisphere.

September Travel Tips

  • You won’t have the city to yourself in September, as the visiting crowds haven't disappeared entirely. You should still allow extra time for traveling and making reservations, and ordering tickets in advance will help you to avoid long lines, especially at top attractions like the Anne Frank House.
  • The weather will likely be more favorable in early September rather than in late September, but the crowds will also be larger in the first half of the month.
  • Expect larger crowds during Open Monument Day, Amsterdam City Swim, and Amsterdam Wine Festival—rates might go up at hotels, too, so be sure to book well in advance.
  • While Open Monument Day means you can see great sites for free, there will also be longer lines than usual.
  • Though October is typically peak fall foliage in Amsterdam, you might get lucky to see the golden leaves changing at the end of September. Amsterdam is quite a green city; you can peep the leaves along the canals as well as in the many city parks.

10 Things to Do in Amsterdam in October

Autumn arrives in Amsterdam and turns October into one of the most beautiful months to visit the city of canals. Discover in this post all that offers you in this month

10 Things to Do in Amsterdam in October

View of Amsterdam at night | ©Wegdekstreepje

The month of October in Amsterdam is conditioned, for the better, by autumn. In this season the parks of the city give us a certainly beautiful postcard and the streets have a special atmosphere. Although the cold is more intense during October there are many things to do and see outside the more typical and touristy.

The cold autumn days are perfect to see the museums of the city or enjoy a hot coffee in one of its squares. But there are also festivals and celebrations unique to October that are worth experiencing as well as unique sporting events. So what are the best things to do in Amsterdam in October ? The answer is below.

1. Van Gogh and autumn go hand in hand

If you are a lover of art and the figure of Vincent Van Gogh you will know that autumn was a source of inspiration for the artist . In fact many of his works are landscapes of this season and the typical autumn colors are very frequent in his paintings.

This is one of the most important celebrations in the Jewish calendar and therefore a good time to visit Amsterdam's Jewish quarter .

This small neighborhood in the center of Amsterdam is home to some of the most important museums in the city such as the Rembrandt House Museum or the Jewish Historical Museum . The latter is the perfect place to learn about Jewish culture. During its festivities this neighborhood breathes a special atmosphere. If you decide to visit you will not regret it, but always do it with respect for their religious customs.

Book your ticket for the Amsterdam Jewish Museum .

3. Honor the memory of Anne Frank and visit her house museum

Also in connection with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, many take the opportunity to take an Anne Frank tour of the Jewish Quarter . Some choose to do this tour to coincide with this key date as a symbol of respect, but it is always a good time to learn about Anne Frank's story.

On this tour, which lasts approximately two hours , you will explore both the Jewish Quarter and Jodenbuurt , and you will learn all the historical details of when Amsterdam was under German rule, as well as the importance of the Anne Frank House .

Book an Anne Frank tour of the Jewish Quarter

4. Canal cruise under the autumn cloak

A canal cruise in Amsterdam is a must if you travel to Amsterdam at any time of the year. But it is in autumn when, in my opinion, they look the most beautiful. Thanks to the orange colors of autumn and the many trees on the banks of the canals, cruising the canals at this time is a real treat especially for lovers of photography.

It is not so advisable to do it at night when temperatures drop, but still a night cruise with dinner included on the canals of Amsterdam is a safe bet if you want to enjoy the most characteristic of the city.

Book a cruise in Amsterdam

5. Celebrate Oktoberfest Dutch style

Although Oktoberfest, the most famous beer festival on the planet, is a German celebration, Amsterdam is no slouch when it comes to celebrating this festival. The Netherlands and its capital have always had a great beer tradition and do not miss the opportunity to celebrate Oktoberfest in their own way.

The bars fill up and the beer mugs dance non-stop and, taking advantage of the occasion, floating terraces are set up on the canals. The party atmosphere appears on every corner and there are also special visits to the original Heineken brewery located in Amsterdam itself.

Book your ticket for the Heineken Experience

6. If you get caught in the rain, take shelter in its museums

Rain and autumn in Amsterdam inevitably go hand in hand. Do not let the precipitation spoil the party and take the opportunity to take refuge from it in the museums of the city. The capital of the Netherlands could well be considered, in addition to the city of canals, as the city of museums.

  • The STRAAT Street Art Museum in Amsterdam , which, with an area of 8,000 square meters, is the largest space for street art and graffiti in the capital of the Netherlands.
  • Amsterdam' s Moco Museum , or Modern Contemporary Museum, will allow you to delve into this street artist's most acclaimed works such as Laugh Is The Air , Girl With Balloon and Barcode .
  • The NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam , where you will have at your disposal a variety of interactive experiments in engineering, physics, biology and chemistry for both children and adults.
  • The FOAM photography museum in Amsterdam , where you will have the opportunity to discover new talents as well as to admire classic artists.

7. Halloween in Amsterdam

Halloween is becoming more and more widespread in Europe and Amsterdam is proof of this. The holiday of October 31 is lived with special fervor in the city of canals and many parties and events are held according to the occasion. If your trip coincides with this day you can enjoy many terrifying activities around the city.

There are guided tours that tell the spookiest stories of Amsterdam and many canals are decorated with typical Halloween elements. But the scariest thing to do is to visit the Amsterdam Dungeon. A horror attraction built inside a Gothic church that tries to scare the viewer with a theater and a setting worthy of the best Halloween.

Book your ticket for Amsterdam Dungeon

8. Enjoy watching a rowing race through the canals

Every year since 1986 and at the beginning of October takes place the celebration of theGrachtenrace . A rowing race along the canals of the city that has become one of the main sporting events in the Amsterdam calendar.

More than 140 teams take part in the race, which covers 25 kilometers along the canals through the entire city. Fans crowd on the bridges that cross these canals to watch and cheer the participants and enjoy the race while eating something at the nearby food stalls or terraces. It is certainly a different experience to live in October if you travel to the Dutch city.

9. Cheer on the runners of the big Amsterdam Marathon...or join them

The other big sporting event of October, and of the whole year, is the international Amsterdam Marathon . This race has worldwide prestige and thousands of runners from all over the world come to compete in it. Around the event in the city are prepared activities of all kinds and everything is conditioned for runners and spectators to enjoy the sport.

You can enjoy watching the participants pass through some of the landmarks of the city or if you are a lover of running you can join them. In addition, the race is charitable and the funds raised go to non-profit associations.

10. A hot coffee to fight the autumn in Leidseplein square

There are many ways to enjoy autumn in Amsterdam without being cold and safe from the rain. One of my favorite plans in this regard is to go to the cafes on Leidseplein Square. This central square of Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful and is a regular meeting point for the inhabitants of Amsterdam who go to the cafes of this square.

Here you can enjoy a good hot coffee, relax and get away from the tourist bustle and the autumn cold. When night falls this square becomes the center of nightlife thanks to its many restaurants and pubs. It is definitely a good place to combat the autumn.

Temperatures in Amsterdam in October

As expected, October is a month of purely autumnal weather . In Amsterdam this translates into cooler, but pleasant temperatures, more cloudy days and frequent showers. Highs range between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius while lows hover around 10 degrees Celsius . Temperatures rarely drop below 6 degrees or rise above 20 degrees. In general it is a pleasant climate to see the city if you are not particularly cold.

What you have to be especially aware of are the rains. The probability of a rainy day increases to 35%. It is more likely, and almost certain, that we will be caught by cloudy skies. Here the probability rises to 60%. But don't let these figures fool you, the temperatures are perfectly bearable and the rainy days are well compensated by the autumnal charm of Amsterdam.

The influx of tourists in Amsterdam in October

The high season in Amsterdam ends in September so October is the first month of low season until May. This does not mean that Amsterdam is empty of tourists, but there is a noticeable drop in tourism. In October you will not have too many problems to find flights and accommodation and in the tourist spots the queues are smaller.

However, there are specific days when the trend is the opposite. There are international events such as the Amsterdam marathon or the Halloween party that attract thousands of visitors. But if you are looking for a month with a good balance between tolerable weather and a quiet influx, October is a good time to visit Amsterdam.

Book a bike tour in Amsterdam

Amsterdam prices in October

As is always the case, prices depend a lot on the number of tourists and the demand. In the case of October the demand for hotel rooms and accommodations, flights and so on decreases so prices also decrease . It is not a big drop if we compare it to what is seen in the winter months, but it is certainly a cheaper month to visit Amsterdam than in the summer.

Book a tour of Amsterdam's Red Light District

What to pack to visit Amsterdam in October

If you are traveling to Amsterdam in October, it is essential that you are prepared for the cold and rainy weather. Therefore, the essentials you should pack in your suitcase are:

  • Warm and preferably waterproof clothing.
  • Comfortable and waterproof footwear.
  • Rain is almost inevitable, but in Amsterdam umbrellas are not recommended because of the strong wind that sometimes blows. It is best to bring a raincoat.

New York Today

A royal visit to the city that was once called new amsterdam.

Among other stops in New York, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will tour an exhibit focused on 400 years of Dutch history.

James Barron

By James Barron

Good morning. It’s Thursday. We’ll get details of a royal visit to New York City. We’ll also find out what Mayor Eric Adams said when asked about pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands walking next to each other. The king is wearing a suit, while the queen is wearing a bright red outfit with a matching floral headpiece.

They did not arrive in the United States the way many couples do — the husband, who has a pilot’s license, was in the cockpit of the Boeing 737 jet, serving as the co-pilot for at least part of the flight from Europe.

Still, on their outing in New York City today, the pair, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, will do what many tourists do. They will stroll along the High Line and go to a museum.

But they said the trip had a purpose — emphasizing ties between the Netherlands and the United States and strengthening economic connections. The most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Netherlands ranked third in direct investment in the United States with $617.1 billion at the end of 2022, after Japan ($712 billion) and the United Kingdom ($663.4 billion).

So the royals’ itinerary includes a midday event at the Brooklyn Navy Yard about business startups and ways to accelerate clean technology .

They will also go on a tour of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they will “discuss urban challenges such as climate action, affordable housing and societal resilience” with community leaders, according to the Dutch government. Their day will end with a reception at Hudson Yards in Manhattan; the king and Mayor Eric Adams are expected to speak there.

The trip is not the royals’ first visit to New York. Willem-Alexander and Máxima visited in 2009, when he was the crown prince (he ascended to the throne in 2013). Máxima had lived in New York from 1996 to 2000 when she was an investment banker.

They arrived in New York City after two days in Georgia and one in Albany. (Willem-Alexander flew the plane there, too, according to a spokeswoman for the Netherlands Embassy in Washington.) Willem-Alexander’s focus was on jobs during a session at a nanotechnology center in Albany that describes itself as the largest nonprofit semiconductor research-and-development facility in the country . Willem-Alexander was all business in his brief remarks there, saying that trade with the Netherlands accounted for 57,000 jobs in New York State.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said that “New York became what it is because of the Dutch” and mentioned names like Brooklyn and the New York Knicks that have Dutch roots. She also referred to the Schuyler mansion in Albany, where Elizabeth Schuyler grew up. Of the three daughters in the household — familiar to theatergoers who’ve seen “Hamilton” — she was the one who married the man whose portrait is on the $10 bill.

Later, as the king looked on, Hochul and a Dutch trade official signed a memorandum of understanding that confirmed shared interests in advancing semiconductor research and development.

Today, after their stops in Brooklyn, Willem-Alexander and Máxima will walk through an exhibition commemorating 400 years of Dutch history in New York at the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side. The exhibition includes a 1626 letter that describes the “purchase” of Manhattan from Native Americans for 60 guilders, which later was said to have been $24.

The exhibition also includes a letter from three chiefs of contemporary Lenape communities whose ancestors lived in Manhattan when the Dutch arrived with hopes of establishing a Dutch republic in North America. And the exhibition displays a map of New Amsterdam, called the Castello Plan, that was painted around 1660, long before Peter Stuyvesant surrendered to the British.

So what do you say when a king and queen cross the threshold?

“I’m going to invite them to have a look at Dutch history, beginning at the very beginning,” said Louise Mirrer, the president and chief executive of the historical society .

“What’s eye-opening is to see evidence that the Dutch actually did believe they had purchased Manhattan from the Lenape,” she said. “The letter really says something about how cultures can understand each other incorrectly, or misunderstand one another. Obviously, history bore out how the misunderstanding was disadvantageous to the Lenape.”

Enjoy a sunny day in the mid-80s. The evening should be mostly clear, with temperatures in the low 70s.

Adams praised a reporter’s ‘summer body’

Mayor Eric Adams told a journalist who asked him about pro-Palestinian demonstrations that it looked as if he had been working out and complimented the reporter’s “summer body.”

One of the mayor’s top female advisers, sitting nearby at City Hall, shook her head in disbelief. Another deputy mayor looked down and covered her eyes.

My colleague Emma G. Fitzsimmons writes that the remark was not unusual for Adams. He often comments on people’s physical appearance or clothing. And while he speaks proudly about the number of top cabinet officials who are women, he has also made the point to note that they lead while wearing Christian Louboutin shoes, with their signature red-soled heels.

This was not the first time that Adams had singled out the reporter he said had a “summer body” — Pete Cuddihy, an intern at Fox News. At a news conference in March, when Cuddihy asked about the city’s housing crisis, the mayor said, “I like that turtleneck — people don’t wear turtlenecks anymore.”

A spokeswoman for Fox News sent a statement from Cuddihy that said: “Speaking only about my interaction on June 11 with Mayor Adams, I felt his comments towards me were friendly, and I did not feel uncomfortable.”

Adams is far from the only notable elected official who has been criticized for making comments that seem inappropriate. President Biden has made remarks about people’s physical appearance; Donald Trump often mocks people’s physical appearance and was found liable in a civil trial for sexually abusing the writer E. Jean Carroll. And the Justice Department found that Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, subjected female employees to a “sexually hostile work environment,” made unwanted comments and gave preferential treatment to some employees based on their physical appearance.

Adams, a Democrat, was himself accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a colleague in 1993 when he was a police officer.

Fabien Levy, a deputy mayor and Adams’s chief spokesman, said the mayor “would never intentionally make someone feel uncomfortable. He’s a warm and engaging person who talks to New Yorkers the way any regular New Yorker speaks to one another.”

METROPOLITAN diary

Dear Diary:

Anyone who lived or worked in Midtown Manhattan in the 1970s and ’80s knew Gene Palma as the guy who “played” Sixth Avenue. He even had a cameo in “Taxi Driver.”

With shoe-polish blackened hair and heavy makeup, Gene would play his drum on the sidewalk. Sometimes, he would bang his sticks on newspaper vending machines, or sit on the curb and play the street itself.

In the winter, to avoid the frigid north wind that swept down the avenues, he would move onto the side streets. Once, when I saw him on 52nd Street, I asked why he moved onto the side streets every winter.

“The sound’s better,” he said.

Benjamin Bat

Cinekid Festival, touted as the world’s largest festival for children’s film and media, opens October 20 at Pathé Amsterdam Noord with Beta Film’s “Benjamin Bat,” an animated musical adventure pic about a bat with nyctophobia.

“Benjamin Bat” follows a timid bat whose fear of the dark (aka nyctophobia), makes him an oddity among his peers. They find his sensitivity and love for singing, an activity reserved for their bird enemies, baffling. Everything changes when Benjamin meets Sherida, a tropical songbird. To save her and embrace his true self, Benjamin must summon all his courage.

Said Heleen Rouw, Cinekid Festival director: “’Benjamin Bat’ is a true Cinekid film; Benjamin chooses his own path with his unique style. Everyone is welcome in this film, an important message in these times when individuality is key, and we are often at odds with each other rather than with each other. It’s an eye-catching Dutch animated film with international appeal.”

Describing “Benjamin Bat” as a partly 3D-animated feature with painted backgrounds, Claudia Schmitt, head of Kids & Family Entertainment, Beta Film, remarked: “It is a beautiful story about facing your fears, standing up for yourself, even against those closest to you, and how family is more than the blood we share.”
