There’s a lot to navigate when researching and booking travel online.

My first travel adventure was to Venezuela. I booked the ticket with a travel agent over a pay phone. The agent searched a dozen flight itineraries over a few days, all so I could save $15.

Times have changed. Today, flight searches start online , often on your mobile device. Passengers book either directly with the airline or hotel or with online travel agencies. Rarely do we get on the phone. In fact, American Airlines and United Airlines charge $25 to make a domestic flight booking by phone. And pay phones hardly exist anymore.

So, what is the best way to book online? Here is our complete guide to online travel agencies, search tools, and the variety of booking options available on both mobile devices and desktops.

What is an OTA?

An online travel agency, or OTA, is a website or mobile app that allows users to search for and book travel services such as flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, and activities. The booking is made directly with the online travel agency but confirmed by the service provider, such as an airline or a hotel. As a customer, your relationship is with the OTA.

What are the main OTAs?

Many online travel agencies nowadays are owned by two main companies: Expedia and Priceline. The Expedia Group is the largest online travel agency in the United States with 70 percent market share, according to travel data firm Phocuswright. Expedia Group operates Expedia.com , Orbitz, Hotels.com , Trivago, CheapTickets , Hotwire , Vrbo , and Travelocity .

Priceline is a major competitor to Expedia, with global revenues larger than the Expedia Group. The company owns Priceline.com, Booking.com, Cheapflights, Momondo, and Kayak—the latter two being metasearch engines (more on that below).

There are also independent newcomers such as Hopper (a mobile-only booking tool) and Kiwi.com (which allows you to book flights on air carriers that don’t normally have a commercial relationship).

Are OTA fares lower than booking directly?

Generally, no. The fares that are displayed by an OTA will be similar if not slightly more expensive when compared to an airline’s website. They’re usually only a few dollars higher or lower. The OTAs charge a booking fee to the airlines, and often that fee is passed directly to consumers. For example, Lufthansa tacks on an additional $18 to any booking made through an OTA for Lufthansa flights. The same flights are exactly $18 cheaper on the airline’s website.

Where you can score a good travel deal through an OTA is when booking a last-minute hotel and flight package. Many OTAs have cut agreements with airlines allowing last-minute travelers to access lower rates than are typically available when passengers book a flight alone.

Are all airlines available to be booked through OTAs?

No. Many OTAs do not display flights from some of the low-fare leaders. For example, Southwest and Allegiant flights are not available through OTAs; the same goes for Ryanair in Europe. And, earlier this year United Airlines threatened to pull out of Expedia altogether, only recently signing a multi-year agreement to stay in. The airlines would rather not lose any margin to online travel agencies in an already low-margin industry and would rather maintain a direct relationship with the customer.

Are smaller OTAs safe to use?

Expedia and Priceline are the two largest players in the online booking space, but there are dozens of independent OTAs, such as CheapOAir, OneTravel, JustFly, and SmartFares. Confusingly, you might actually stumble on ads for these OTAs while using Expedia or Priceline sites. That’s because the larger OTAs earn revenue through advertising, sending passengers to smaller OTAs and charging those OTAs for the favor.

Buyer beware: some of these lesser-known OTAs are masters at hidden fees. For example, a flight search on JetBlue allows for free seat selection in many instances. If you perform the same search on FlightNetwork, an independent OTA, and select a seat, you will be charged an additional $25—despite the fact that JetBlue doesn’t charge a seat selection fee if you book directly.

What if you need to change your itinerary?

Itinerary changes are often a pain. If your plans change, it won’t matter whether you’ve booked directly with an airline or with an OTA—you’re going to pay fees for the privilege, if you can even change your ticket at all.

For example, CheapTickets.com, which is part of the Expedia Group, charges $25 to change or cancel a ticket if that change is requested after 24 hours of making the booking—it is free if you do so within 24 hours of booking. However, the fees go up from there. JustFly, an independent OTA, charges a $75 fee for changes to domestic flights in addition to airline change fees, plus the difference in fare, for tickets that can be changed. For an international trip, the fee rises to $200. That means to change an international flight with Delta (which charges a $100 change fee) booked through JustFly, you’ll be assessed $300 in fees, plus the difference in fare. At that rate, you may as well book a new flight. FlightNetwork indicates in its terms of service that changes may incur a change fee but doesn’t specify what those fees are. That hardly makes the few dollars you saved by booking with the OTA in the first place worth it.

What is an OTA price match policy?

To assure travelers that they are getting the lowest fare possible, many OTAs have a price match policy. The rules vary and so do the benefits.

For example, if you book with Orbitz and find a less expensive flight, car rental, or activity on any U.S.-based website within 24 hours of your booking, Orbitz will refund you the difference you paid. And it works: I have personally found a flight in the same class, on the same airline, for the same origin and destination cities, and requested Orbitz to refund the difference of around $35. Within a few weeks, I received a check in the mail. A similar program applies for CheapOAir, but there’s a catch—the price difference must be found on a major OTA such as Expedia or Travelocity.

Expedia has a particularly good price match policy, but you have to pay extra for it at the time of booking. Expedia offers the price match option as an add-on that costs between $5 and $30 when you book. With the price match applied, if the airfare on Expedia drops between 120 days of the flight and up to six hours before the flight, Expedia will automatically refund you the difference in fare. Unfortunately, fares generally do not drop substantially as the travel date approaches, so while this might give you peace of mind, it’s probably not worth the expense.

How do Google Flights and other travel metasearch engines work?

Frequent fliers are likely familiar with websites such as Google Flights, Kayak, Momondo, or Skyscanner. On these websites, passengers search on the site but are redirected to the service provider to complete the booking, such as an airline, rental car company, or hotel.

Metasearch started with a product called ITA Matrix, which is a tool for searching airfares online but not for actually booking online. ITA Matrix allows for multi-city searching, such as setting two different departure or arrival airports, and for offering a calendar view of fares for easier comparison. That company was acquired by Google in 2011, and savvy travelers swear by it to help find the least expensive fares online. Most consumers are more familiar with Google Flights, which has gained traction more recently not least because it has the benefit of being displayed first in search results on Google.

Metasearch engines receive distribution fees from the airlines for sending traffic to the supplier websites. There are no additional hidden fees for using a metasearch engine because you’re booking directly with the airline or hotel.

A major benefit of the metasearch engines is their price tracking tool, which lets users know whether the displayed fares are low, average, or high for the flight, allowing travelers to make a more informed decision on whether to book a flight or not . Google Flights and Kayak, for instance, both have price tracking tools.

Why not just book directly?

The airlines would definitely much rather you book directly with them. Over the past five years, they have gotten much better at marketing and selling their product directly to consumers online and through mobile sites and apps. But in the past, they weren’t so good at it. In fact, Delta, Northwest, United, American, and Continental got together to invest $145 million to launch Orbitz in 1999 to counter the threat from Expedia. Now Orbitz is owned by Expedia.

The airlines also try to encourage customers to book directly so that they can maintain a closer relationship with them. It allows carriers to connect bookings with loyalty programs and create special offers and discounts catered to individual passengers.

There is another benefit to booking directly. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires carriers to hold a reservation at the quoted fare for 24 hours without payment or allow a reservation to be cancelled within 24 hours without penalty, so long as the booking is made at least seven days before travel. The law applies, however, only to U.S. and foreign air carriers that have websites marketed to U.S. consumers. This means that, in theory, an online travel agency does not have to offer such a policy, although most OTAs do.

What are the options for booking on your mobile device?

Airlines and the major OTAs all have apps to help you book and manage your trip on your mobile device, but their functionality is lacking compared to these websites’ desktop editions. For example, Expedia’s app doesn’t allow you to view flights on a month-view calendar. Kayak has an app with more bells and whistles and a better user interface, including a month-view calendar with color-coded pricing. It also has a handy “augmented reality” function to help you see if your carry-on bag will fit in the overhead bin (a feature originally developed by KLM). Point your phone’s camera at the luggage, and it’ll give you the dimensions.

While apps are improving and gaining in popularity, you still might find it easier to locate the best deals on flights and hotels by using your desktop, where you can have multiple tabs open and have all the available search tools at your disposal. Apps are fine for booking directly with an airline once you know which flights you want to book.

If you’re determined to use your mobile device, you may want to look into Hopper. Hopper is a mobile-first flight booking tool that has a solid price prediction tool. You can research travel options and book directly on the app. Another benefit of Hopper: Of its team of 300 employees, nearly half are dedicated to customer support and are based in Canada versus some OTAs and airlines that outsource much of their customer service further afield.

The bottom line?

Like many travelers, I enjoy a flight deal as much as the next person, but I also don’t like any added hassle. I typically start my travel searches using the ITA Matrix or Google Flights to get a general sense of the fares. It helps to know what is a good deal and what is expensive for a particular route. I do my research, typically on a desktop computer. When I’m ready to book, I’ll book directly with the airline. I’ve found that customer service is better when booking directly with the service provider. But I’ve also saved money by using OTAs and have booked with them, too. Whichever way you choose to book, you can be safe in the knowledge that finding and purchasing travel online is a lot easier today than searching for a deal with a travel agent on a pay phone.

First, what exactly is a travel agency?

The advisors can either be independent contractors — as they are at Fora — or dedicated employees. The former are largely in control of their business while the latter typically adheres to rigid schedules, dedicated offices and so on. Independent travel agents have significantly more freedom.

The value of a travel agent is better than it has ever been

As more people travel, suppliers (such a hotels and cruises) are more likely to offer perks that travel agencies and advisors can offer their clients. Plus, there’s less risk to a supplier’s bottom line because the advisors tend to bring in higher quality guests, and there's a greater chance for repeat business.

Travel agencies can be very lucrative…once they get off the ground

Because so many people are traveling right now, the opportunity to earn income from commissions and planning is exceptional. However, it’s worth noting that established agencies have a clear advantage here. People are much more likely to plan their travel through familiar brands than untested agencies.

How to start a travel agency: step-by-step

Ready for the exact steps? Here’s how to start a travel agency from scratch. 

A warning though: this guide isn’t meant to be taken as business or legal advice, nor is this an all-encompassing plan for all jurisdictions. Some locales, states and countries may require additional or alternative steps.

1. Understand the travel industry, conduct market research & identify a niche

Before you ever touch a business plan, it is important that you learn the ins and outs of the travel industry. This means understanding the triangular relationship between suppliers — such as hotel brands and rental-car services — travel advisors and clients. It’s then critical to know the exact products and services you’ll be selling. This includes hotel reservations, tours, cruises… you get the idea. 

Next, it’s important that you know your competition, and this will rise and fall depending on the audience you’re seeking. For example, it’s generally easier to get your foot in the door at the local level than to start on an international field, where all the major players have already found their market share. 

On the flip side, while there may be less competition the smaller you scale, there may also be exponentially less demand for your agency’s services. Ultimately, it's all a balancing act.

To do all of this, you’ll need to enroll in travel supplier training courses, conduct market research and perhaps ideally, find a niche to exploit.

2. Create a business plan, register your business, make a financial plan & secure startup costs

After you get a handle on the industry, you have to understand the more technical aspects of starting a travel agency. 

This includes creating a business plan, registering your business with all local, state and federal entities (requirements varies by country), pitching a financial plan to investors and securing your startup costs, which could be anywhere from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars and beyond — the exact number relies on many more factors than can reasonably be listed here. But generally, the larger your target market, the larger the initial investment needs to be. 

This isn’t a one-time ordeal either, as you’ll need to secure investments to fund regular business operations until you start turning a profit.

3. Understand your tax obligations

Another technical aspect of starting a travel agency, or any business, is understanding your tax obligations. Taxes for agencies, regardless of how they are organized (as a corporation, LLC, etc.), are going to be more complicated than taxes for travel advisors because there are a lot more factors to consider, such as employees, nuanced expenses and so on. 

4. Acquire all the necessary licenses & registrations for your travel agency (local, state, international…)

In addition to ordinary business licenses (i.e., the licenses you need to run any business), you may also need to register as a seller of travel. Exact license requirements change with your location — and the specifics get convoluted fast. Moreover, you may also need licenses in select areas before you can sell travel within their borders (e.g. California).

5. Create a website & set up your office (online and / or brick-and-mortar)

In today’s world, websites are essential, and it’s not enough to “set it and forget it.” You’ll either need to hire a dedicated web team or devote a portion of your time to maintenance, functionality and development. It’s also worth mentioning that a barebones website isn’t going to cut it — you’ll need something that explains what your business does and why clients should choose you over your competitors.

Additionally, you’ll need to set up an office and decide whether to operate as an in-person agency, an online agency or somewhere in between. 6. Hire or contract travel advisors, plus support staff

Unless you’re an agency of one, you’ll need to either hire or contract travel advisors along with various support staff. Moreover, you’ll need to decide whether you’ll train advisors in-house or require some sort of prior travel agent school . 

The first part isn’t too difficult — plenty of people have a passion for travel — but the second part can make or break your agency. Quality training will go a long way in ensuring your agency's relevance and success.

7. Adopt travel software platforms used for bookings

Ballpark estimates suggest that you’re going to have to spend, at a minimum, several thousand dollars to start your own agency. On the other hand, you can spend a fraction of that, enjoy the perks of an established host agency and start making money right away as a Fora Advisor. 

What are the legal requirements for starting a travel agency?

The legal requirements for starting a travel agency vary by jurisdiction.

Cincinnati named Ohio’s first passport agency location

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — People looking to receive a passport to travel internationally will have another option in southwest Ohio.

The U.S. Department of State announced Monday that a new passport agency would be coming to Cincinnati, the first location in Ohio.

Five other cities across the country selected include:

  • Charlotte, North Carolina
  • Kansas City, Missouri
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Antonio

According to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the new locations are for travelers that have “urgent travel needs.” By adding the six new locations across the nation, the spots will allow prospective travelers to receive quicker customer service.

“In 1990, only five percent of Americans had a passport,” said a release. “Today, that number is 48 percent. In Fiscal Year 2023, the Department of State issued over 24 million passport books and cards – more than ever before.”

Individuals not in need of immediate services can still visit any of the 7,400 passport acceptance or 26 current passport agencies across the country for support.

As a divemaster, I understand that life under the water is incredible. I also understand that it poses serious risks, even if you take every possible precaution. Accidents happen, which is why scuba diving travel insurance can be a good investment.

Before you think, “I have travel insurance, so I’m set,” know that you might not be. Many travel insurance policies don’t cover what they classify as “high-risk activities,” such as skydiving, skiing, and scuba diving. Bummer. Thus, it pays to evaluate travel insurance with scuba diving cover specifically included.

How do you choose the right one? And what separates a good policy from the pack? I’m glad you asked.

Let’s get this out of the way first: Not every type of travel insurance covers scuba diving. Even those we rate as the best travel insurance plans focus on other things, such as trip delays and lost luggage. Divers likely have other concerns, though it’s possible to find hybrid policies that cover both dive-related accidents and things like damaged gear in your checked luggage .

Insurance: You hope you never need it. And it’s something you pay for hoping you never have to use it. Most things in life aren’t worth paying for if you’re not using them, so does that mean you shouldn’t get travel insurance for scuba diving?

Let’s consider the alternative: What if you don’t get coverage?

Depending on where you are in the world, getting to an appropriate medical facility for your diving-related accident might not be that simple. Consider that several island nations in the Caribbean don’t have a decompression chamber. When I did my divemaster course in Bayahibe in the Dominican Republic, the nearest chamber was 2 hours away by car in Santo Domingo, the capital.

As you may know, delays in treatment decrease the likelihood of positive outcomes during diving accidents. They also increase your costs. Imagine diving in Nicaragua, which doesn’t have a chamber. After a serious dive accident, you may need emergency transportation to Costa Rica to access the nearest decompression chamber. As you’ll see from our evaluation of medical evacuation insurance policies , the cost of emergency medical evacuation can surpass $10,000 faster than you can say, “How much will this treatment cost?” And skipping treatment might not be an option, regardless of the price tag.

So, while it might look like one more item to trim to keep travel costs low, the alternative to forgoing scuba diving insurance might not be worth the risk if something goes wrong.

Travel insurance that covers scuba diving can be broken down into 2 categories: traditional travel insurance that also covers scuba diving and scuba-focused policies that have some “regular travel insurance” elements tacked on. Thus, you’ll see familiar travel insurance companies offering plan supplements to cover scuba diving (and other adventure sports) or sports travel-themed policies from these travel insurance regulars. Conversely, you can find insurance policies that are acutely focused on scuba accident insurance while also including a few other elements on top.

Let’s start with the travel insurance companies.

Costs From Traditional Travel Insurance Agencies

To get an idea of pricing, we used Squaremouth — a travel insurance comparison website that lets you sort through hundreds of travel insurance plans — to compare plans and prices. We priced a sample trip for 2 people, ages 37 and 35, who live in Illinois and paid for their trip yesterday but are shopping for travel insurance today. They want insurance to cover their 10-day trip in September, heading to one of my favorite diving destinations: Belize.

After you fill out the destination, dates of travel, number of travelers, and ages, the final page asks for the cost of the trip and the date of the first deposit . You need to put in a price (per traveler or total trip cost) and whether the full amount of the trip has been paid for yet. You also choose whether you want your policy to cover the trip cost. This affects whether you see policies covering lost deposits for missing or canceling your trip, for example.

We chose “cover my trip cost” and said that the trip cost was $1,000 per person, already paid in full with a deposit date in the past 24 hours. Squaremouth returned 4 policies that met all of the criteria (covering scuba diving and trip reimbursement) for this example.

Prices range from $130 to $204.22 for these policies. All of the policies cover cancellation for COVID-19 sickness and 100% of the trip cost for trip cancellation. Three of the policies cover 150% of the trip cost (up to $3,000) for trip interruption; however, the IMG Travel Sport policy only covers up to 125% here.

Weather-related issues showed some major differences in the policies. Travelex and TinLeg cover delays of “any length of time,” while the 2 IMG policies require delays of at least 6 hours. Moreover, IMG’s Travel LX Basic policy covers mandatory evacuation. All of the policies require purchasing prior to a named storm being named, and all of them cover your accommodation becoming uninhabitable.

All of the policies allow for extensions if you’re quarantined or injured during the trip, with the IMG policies providing up to 10 days of extension. The other policies provide only 7 days of extension. The waiting period for travel delay coverage is similar in all policies, but the TinLeg Adventure policy has a much lower maximum payout for expenses you incur during delays: just $600, while the other policies are in the thousands. Also, the IMG policies have higher maximum payouts for baggage delays than Travelex and TinLeg . This could be important if your suitcase full of dive gear is delayed and you have to rent a full kit for several days.

Speaking of gear, if items become lost, stolen, or damaged while you’re traveling, that’s not just a headache. It’s also expensive. These policies can help cover costs, but they all have flaws here. Travelex and TinLeg only cover up to $1,000 per person. All policies have per-item maximum costs of $250 or $500. That won’t cover the full cost of your waterproof housing with external lights for your camera or your BCD. Note that the IMG Travel Sport plan doesn’t cover missed connections that create extra costs during your trip, but the other plans cover this.

Now, let’s talk about the medical issues you could encounter during your trip. IMG’s Travel LX Basic doesn’t include coverage for preexisting conditions, but the other plans have allowances for these under certain conditions. None of the plans have a medical deductible, which is great. However, emergency medical maximum payouts range considerably across the plans.

IMG’s Travel Sport is the only plan where coverage is secondary , and its maximum payout is $250,000. The lowest coverage maximum comes on the Travelex plan, at $50,000. IMG’s Travel LX Basic has the highest coverage amount, at $500,000 per person.

Costs From DAN for Diving-Focused Coverage

Now, let’s turn our focus to diving-specific insurance. The industry leader in this area is Divers Alert Network , or DAN for short.

Before you can buy one of DAN’s dive accident insurance policies, you must have a membership . You can buy an individual or family plan, and each has an option for Regular or Enhanced membership.

Both membership types include coverage for emergency evacuation costs, repatriation of remains, family member visits if you’re in a hospital away from home, costs for returning your rental car on your behalf, and even costs for getting your children home after you’re in an accident. The maximum benefit payouts are typically 3 to 4 times higher with the Enhanced membership. The Enhanced membership also has additional benefits not offered on the Regular plan: medical transportation to get home, transportation to rejoin a tour after you had an emergency, search and rescue costs, and repatriation after an emergency.

The cost for an individual membership are $40 for Regular and $60 for Enhanced. Those costs increase to $75 and $100, respectively, for a family membership. To create a family membership, you must attest that all adults and children on the plan live at the same address.

Once you have a DAN membership, you can sign up for its travel insurance with scuba diving accident and emergency coverage. Regardless of whether you have a Regular or Enhanced membership, you’ll find 3 plans: Guardian, Preferred, and Master. Master is the most basic plan, while Guardian is the most robust.

The key focus of these plans is covering you for accidents and emergencies likely to occur during water sports, largely focused on diving (though that’s not the only activity covered). With this focus, you won’t find things like flight delay insurance or delayed luggage insurance — items covered with more traditional travel insurance. Instead, the plans cover medical expenses, extra accommodation costs, lost diving equipment, and disability — so far as any of these are related to diving accidents.

The Preferred and Guardian plans also cover medical expenses not related to diving when you’re in another country, and the Guardian plan covers a much broader list of accidents and emergencies related to all water activities.

It’s also worth pointing out that only the Guardian plan provides additional coverage for search and rescue costs , should a rescue operation be mounted to find you and then a bill sent your way for the costs involved.

While it may seem confusing to find a list of coverage for a DAN membership and a separate list for DAN’s scuba diving travel insurance , you can best understand the differences like this: A DAN membership can cover the costs of getting you, your belongings, and your travel group home after a diving-related accident. DAN’s insurance plans, conversely, cover the medical costs related to your water accidents or emergencies.

The more traditional travel insurance companies offer reimbursement for money lost or expenses you incur during delays, cancellations, and interruptions for your trip. They also can cover costs related to baggage delays, such as needing to rent gear for a day if your suitcase didn’t arrive at your destination. These plans also can cover damage to or loss of your luggage, and they provide varying amounts of emergency medical coverage should you become sick or injured during a trip. And so long as you compare plans with add-ons for scuba diving coverage, the medical coverage should apply to any accidents or injuries that happen in the water.

However, these plans don’t cover every risk related to diving , such as needing emergency transportation to a decompression chamber or replacing your equipment if you had to ditch it to help a troubled diver.

The plans from DAN focus largely on the latter and may be seen as a supplement to traditional travel insurance focusing on flight delays and cancellations. Divers Alert Network plans include the following:

  • Emergency medical transportation by land, air, or sea to the nearest qualified hospital or hyperbaric chamber to provide the treatment you need
  • Hospital charges
  • Hyperbaric chamber treatment costs
  • Costs related to permanent and total disability after a covered diving accident
  • Extra transportation or accommodation costs if you need to stay at your destination for recuperation or can’t use your original ticket home after a covered accident
  • Replacement of lost or damaged diving gear after a covered accident
  • Includes divers over age 70 now after policy updates

To find the right policy for you, comparison shopping is the best way to start . To compare plans, use a comparison website like Squaremouth . After filling out information about your intended trip, costs, and what you’re looking for, you can compare plans side by side to see their differences and costs. This lets you select the best option from what’s available.

Conversely, if your top priority is covering potential diving accidents, DAN has been the leader in this area for a while now . Run by divers, it may better (and more quickly) understand the issue than a customer service number for a general travel insurance company when there’s a diving accident involved. That said, DAN doesn’t cover every aspect of your trip, so it’s worth evaluating what parts of your trip you’re not protecting and what nonrefundable costs you’re not insuring.

There’s also a third option: getting both a travel insurance policy and a dive accident-focused policy. DAN’s diving accident coverage applies annually, and it may be worth purchasing a cheap travel insurance policy any time you head away from home to dive. Getting a weeklong policy to cover your flights, hotel costs, and other travel expenses can provide peace of mind when it’s time to travel, and a policy from DAN can provide peace of mind in the water.

Even after hundreds of dives without ever needing evacuation or emergency treatment, I still consider scuba diving travel insurance worth it. If something goes wrong underwater, the costs to get emergency care can skyrocket quickly. While you hope you never need to file a claim for a serious diving accident, you’ll be glad someone else is picking up the tab if you do.

Consider the list of options above to see which is the best fit for your diving plans. If you dive infrequently and always near top-notch facilities, that might make you pick a different plan than someone who frequents live-aboard vessels that take them far from a hyperbaric chamber while diving day in and day out.

When booking my trip, the company provided me with an in-depth travel questionnaire that asked about my interests, curiosities, risk tolerance, well-being, and overall travel philosophy. It also dug into the "why" of my trip, the safety criteria, and logistics and budget.

The company then sent me a trip proposal, which provided a few clues about the city I'd be traveling to. There was no pressure to book and the proposal itself was completely free.

Once I committed, they built up the suspense by gamifying the pre-trip content, slipping fun facts and clues into my WhatsApp DMs.

I challenged myself (and my friends) to rely on our brains (no Googling) to figure out where I might be going, which led to many meaningful conversations about travel.

The destination reveal turned out to be pretty underwhelming

My plan to film a reveal video at the airport was quickly foiled when my driver informed me that Newark has two international terminals.

Because the tour company didn't note the terminal information on the envelope, I had no choice but to open the card in the car, which was underwhelming.

However, I was excited by the location listed on my card — Lisbon.

Along with the destination, the envelope included a detailed itinerary with daily pre-booked excursions, including an e-bike tour and a sunset cruise, with one free day to myself.

The company did a great job arranging my accommodations and activities

I arrived in Lisbon mid-morning after my basic-economy flight . I was relieved to find the company booked me a studio apartment with a sweeping balcony overlooking the street.

I liked being in a residential area, and the proximity to a metro hub and grocery stores made it feel like I had moved abroad.

My first group excursion turned out to be a one-on-one personalized e-bike tour of the city when folks bailed because of the rain.

My city guide took me on a two-hour tour along the Tagus River waterfront, and I ended up taking that same route several times throughout the week.

I also enjoyed the other trips Journee booked for me, including a drive along the countryside to a small village southeast of the city. Here, my group dodged the rain to visit a Stonehenge-like megalithic complex dating back 7,000 years .

One of the last curated events of the trip was visiting the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Feeling utter tranquility in the cloisters was worth the 90 minutes I spent waiting in line.

As the week went on, I started veering from the pre-planned schedule

Although I enjoyed the group excursions, I worried that I wouldn't have enough time to explore the city on my own. That's why I decided to skip my third-day excursion to wander off the beaten path.

I weaved through the Alcântara district, stopping at the LXFactory, an old industrial textile complex turned food and art hall.

I also biked to explore the Mouraria and Alfama districts, filling up on bacalhau, Lisbon's salted codfish tapas. I even spent a few hours at the Fado Museum , an interactive and immersive cultural arts center where I learned about the history of Portugal's soulful music.

I loved being able to explore another side of the city, which hadn't been in my original itinerary.

I enjoyed the trip, but would make a few changes next time

Overall, it was exciting to step outside my comfort zone and hand over the travel planning to someone else. I loved the surprise of not knowing the destination and visiting historical sites off the beaten path.

Next time, I would book with a friend and have a more direct conversation with the tour company about having more time for independent exploration.

Before you embark on a summer vacation, check out these suggestions for better travels

Before you take off on a summer trip, a guest columnist provides a few travel tips to consider.

Here are 18 travel tips sure to make your next vacation a smoother experience:

1. It's best to always keep a travel checklist of items that you can update as you gain experience in your travels. I always check mine two to three times before I ever walk out the door.

2. If traveling abroad, carry an extra copy of your passport in a separate piece of luggage or on your phone. That will make it a lot easier to obtain an emergency replacement if you lose your original. Generally, it is never a good idea to carry your original around with you on the streets.

3. Always double-check all your confirmations of airline flights, hotels, rental cars. Too many vacations have been ruined because of a date error on a reservation.

4. If you are faced with suddenly having to rebook flights and hotels, often travel providers have “chat” features on their apps, which is a quicker communication method than being on hold for an hour or more.

5. Always know the currency foreign exchange of the countries to which you are traveling. Avoid being taken advantage of by hotels, restaurants, etc. that want to do currency exchanges for you at unfavorable rates. The FOREX website is the best place to check exchange rates. Resist the urge to have it charged in U.S. dollars when you settle the bill.

6. Some countries will give you a more favorable rate if you exchange new, undamaged U.S. $100 bills at exchange kiosks.

7. If you want to have a little bit of foreign currency before you land, you can go to a major bank or AAA in the United States and have them order currency for you. However, be aware, even though they tell you there is “no fee,” the fee gets taken out by a less-than-favorable exchange rate.

8. I always have two to three alternate travel routes in mind before I ever go to the airport in case of cancellations. You are in a more powerful position if you know your alternate options.

9. Make sure you have pre-selected your phone plans for calls and texts. Understand the limits of your plan when out of the country to avoid high surcharge surprises

10. Carry only a minimum amount of cash with you on the streets of a strange city or country. Pickpockets abound in many countries.

11. Most pickpockets depend on distraction to complete their task. “Distraction is always followed by extraction!"

12. Split up your credit cards to avoid one person carrying all of them.

13. Don’t put your medicine in a checked bag. It may not show up for two weeks.

14. If you take several medications, it is best to keep a list of those in case you need to replace them in a travel destination.

15. Make sure you explicitly understand your travel medical insurance policies in the event something happens such as illness or needed medical evacuation. Certain credit cards cover these types of events. Know those credit card policies. The devil is in the details!

16. On vacation, I always try to take some clothes that are at “end of life.” I can leave those behind as I go. Often a maid at a hotel or bed and breakfast knows someone who can use them. If you give them to the hotel maid, attach a note with them so management will know you gave them away.

17. Don’t overpack! You can buy just about anything you need in your travels ― unless you are going to Mt. Everest. Packing large containers of toiletries doesn’t make sense when you can buy them along the way if you run out.

18. The last thing to do before you walk out the door is to set the thermostat at minimum settings. You don’t want to pay for energy bills when you're not using your house.
