17 of the Most Beautiful Caribbean Islands

Add these stunning Caribbean islands to your must-visit list.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Wildroze/Getty Images

More than 7,000 islands in the Caribbean Sea are blessed with near-perfect weather, white-sand beaches, and brilliantly blue waters. It’s no surprise the 100 or so inhabited islands are beloved vacation destinations for visitors from around the world.

While the islands have much in common with one another, their histories, natural resources, topography, and cultures pose fascinating distinctions. Centuries of influence from European countries, Africa, and other parts of the world have created the music, art, customs, languages, and cuisine of the islands today. In many places, well-preserved architecture tells the story of the destination's past.

Visiting the Caribbean is convenient, with air service to most islands, while some require boats or ferries to reach their final destinations – part of the fun of travel. Places to stay range from quaint bed-and-breakfasts to luxurious resorts and everything in between. Each island offers stunning beauty , and we're sharing some of our favorites here. Here are 18 of the most beautiful Caribbean islands.

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

M Swiet Productions/Getty Images

The third largest of the British Virgin Islands , Virgin Gorda is known for its pristine beaches, history, nature sanctuaries, and the Baths — pools and seawater grottos formed by huge granite boulders. White-sand shores include nearby Spring Bay, with clear water for snorkeling, an expansive lawn, picnic tables, barbecue grills, and a natural swimming pool created by a circle of boulders.

This volcanic island is known for its beaches, rain forests, turquoise waters, and the beautiful Piton mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hikers can enjoy the views, wildlife, and a variety of flora on the lush mountains. Mineral-rich mud pools, thermal baths, and sulfur springs are reminders of the island’s volcanic origins. The beauty continues under the sea, where divers and snorkelers can see coral, colorful tropical fish, and sea turtles.

This beautiful island is nicknamed the "Spice Isle" for its production of spices, including nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, allspice, pepper, and vanilla. White-sand beaches on its 75 miles of coastline, rain forests, and waterfalls are part of the appeal, as is its vibrant culture, ancient rum distilleries, and historic architecture. Divers can enjoy its coral reefs, shipwrecks, and underwater sculpture park.

Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica offers untouched natural beauty, rivers, rain forests, mountains, and waterfalls. A unique feature on the island is Boiling Lake, a flooded volcanic fumarole that bubbles from the molten magma below. The main town on the island’s north coast is Calibishie, an ancient fishing village lying just a mile from its seashore location to the rain forest.

Known for upscale resorts , villas, boutiques, and visiting yachts, St. Barts is a small eight-square-mile island with white-sand beaches, lagoons, and inlets. An undersea nature reserve protects the shallow coral reefs surrounding the island, and snorkeling among colorful marine life and a sunken yacht are favorite activities. The capital, Gustavia, is a picturesque harbor with promenades, historic buildings, and restaurants.

Located just about 600 miles from Miami, Jamaica’s beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and wildlife provide visitors with a range of things to do and see . In addition to its sandy shores, Jamaica offers rivers flowing from its mountains into the Caribbean. Dunn’s River Falls attracts hikers as well as beachgoers who swim in the shallow waters at the base of the waterfall or relax on the white-sand beach.

Puerto Rico

From beaches to mountains to rainforests, Puerto Rico offers a diverse environment. El Yunque National Forest includes natural pools, waterfalls, and hiking trails. With more than 270 miles of coastline, Puerto Rico’s beaches range from secluded coves to lively white-sand stretches with swimming, diving, and water sports. The rare bioluminescent bays are thrilling places where the water glows, thanks to microscopic organisms that are stimulated by movement.

Turks and Caicos

The British Overseas Territory of Turks and Caicos consists of two island groups totaling about 100 islands, with nine inhabited. Known for great weather , the islands receive minimal rainfall and the average annual temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The island of Providenciales is home to the majority of hotels and resorts . Grace Bay Beach offers soft white sand, calm seas, and an extensive barrier reef. Kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, and paddleboarding are popular activities here.

Located in the eastern Caribbean, Anguilla combines modern, luxurious resorts with a history that includes a plantation house dating back to 1785 and several well-preserved reminders of the island’s past. Soft sand and clear, warm waters attract visitors to the island’s resorts on the east end’s Shoal Bay and the west end’s Meads Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and other beautiful areas.

Necker Island and Moskito Island

Sir Richard Branson’s private islands are a few of the Caribbean’s loveliest. Necker Island , a mile north of Virgin Gorda, features plush villas, lush landscaping, and a variety of wildlife, cared for by a team of conservationists. Moskito Island , just across from Necker Island, also offers natural beauty surrounded by clear, blue waters, with estates available for guest buyouts.

Grand Cayman

Marc Guitard/Getty Images

The largest of the Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman combines coral sand and a lively waterfront with restaurants and beach bars on its famed Seven Mile Beach. In George Town, visitors can enjoy duty-free shopping at designer stores and browsing among traditional buildings. At Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, visitors will find rare blue iguanas, tropical gardens, and a two-acre lake with unique aquatic birds and animals.

Cozumel, Mexico

Brent Durand/Getty Images

Located off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula , Cozumel is on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Snorkeling and diving in the clear waters around the reef or relaxing on the sandy beaches are just a few ways to enjoy the island. Hikers love Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, especially when they reach the top to take in the 360-degree views.

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

Martinique is located north of St. Lucia, and Mont Pelée, an active volcano, is one of the island’s natural wonders. Gorgeous beaches, rain forests, and mountains provide visitors with adventures like hiking, kayaking, and exploring the island’s protected parkland. Historic shipwrecks and the island’s abundant marine life make diving a popular attraction, too, along with Martinique’s famed rum and cuisine.

Anton Petrus/Getty Images

The easternmost of the Caribbean islands, Barbados boasts more than 80 white-sand beaches, snorkeling and diving among marine life and shipwrecks, and some of the Caribbean’s best rum. The island’s breezes are perfect for kitesurfing, and water sports like jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding, deep-sea fishing, and surfing are popular as well.

U.S. Virgin Islands

John Duarte/Getty Images

About 100 miles from Puerto Rico, this archipelago consists of three main islands: St. Thomas , St. John , and St. Croix, the largest. Known for duty-free shopping, the U.S. Virgin Islands offer much more than bargains, although it’s fun to come home with a special purchase. Visitors can snorkel among coral reefs, mangroves, and colorful marine life. On St. John, the Virgin Islands National Park is home to beaches, hiking trails, and historic ruins.

Westend61/Getty Images

One of the so-called ABC Islands, along with Aruba and Bonaire, Curaçao is located in the southern Caribbean, just off the coast of Venezuela. The largest of the three islands, Curaçao offers Caribbean culture with a bit of Dutch flavor, reflecting its heritage. The lovely beaches, historic buildings, nightlife, and location outside of the hurricane belt are all part of the allure.

There are more than 700 islands of the Bahamas, all of them beautiful and some quite unique. Paradise Island features modern resorts, nightlife, and casinos; Eleuthera is more secluded, with pink-sand beaches and historic architecture; and on the Exumas, swimming pigs the attraction, as is a marine reserve that protects the beautiful undersea life. The Abaco Islands, meanwhile, are known for fishing, sailing, boating, and charming colonial towns.

The 26 most beautiful places in the Caribbean

By Caitlin Morton

Image may contain Water Waterfront Dock Port Pier Outdoors Nature and Building

Hidden lagoons, staggering mountains, European-inspired architecture: the 7,000-plus Caribbean islands offer so much more than just gorgeous beaches – although it certainly doesn't suffer in that department. And while many islands were battered by the 2017 hurricanes and travel to other islands (ie, Cuba ) has been muddled by travel bans, the region is still one of our favourite places to visit on the entire planet. Take a tour of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, including natural wonders, underwater sites, and some of the world's dreamiest hotels .

Virgin Gorda

The Baths, Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is the third largest of the British Virgin Islands, with natural beauty covering virtually all of its 22 square kilometres. The island offers quiet beaches and coves and flora-filled national parks . Perhaps the prettiest (and most popular attraction), though, is the Baths, a seaside area where huge granite boulders form scenic saltwater pools and grottos.

Les Salines Martinique

Les Salines, Martinique

The relatively large island of Martinique belongs to France , making it feel even more faraway and exotic as you put your French skills and euros to good use. And with beaches like Les Salines, located just south of Sainte-Anne, the island also happens to be one of our favourites for sand and surf. The pristine white sand at Les Salines stretches on for miles, while palm trees line the shore and provide plenty of shade for those hoping to stay for the entire day.

Goldeneye Jamaica

GoldenEye, Jamaica

Many people use Jamaica as their entry into the Caribbean, and we have a feeling GoldenEye – one of our favourite small resorts in the world – might have something to do with that. Once home to James Bond creator Ian Fleming, the property now boasts lovely trees, gently sloping sands, and a bewitching turquoise sea for everyone to enjoy. (Pro tip: Those views are best enjoyed with a cup of Blue Mountain coffee on your veranda.)

St Lucia

The Pitons, St. Lucia

The scenery of St. Lucia can be summed up in one jaw-dropping site: a duo of striking spires known as the Pitons. The two volcanic peaks – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are the most iconic landmarks on the island, and visitors can enjoy them in a variety of ways. An absolute bucket-list experience has to be actually hiking the mountains, an activity which takes the better part of a day. If you prefer to keep your feet at sea level, plop a towel down at Sugar Beach, set dramatically (and conveniently) between the two Pitons.

Cayman Islands

Stingray City, The Cayman Islands

If it's pristine beaches you're after, look no further than the Cayman Islands (Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman), which have some of the best stretches of sand in the entire Caribbean. But some of the islands' best sites are actually found under the water's surface, just past those white shorelines. Make sure to pay a special visit to Stingray City off of Grand Cayman, to snorkel with the rays in shockingly clear water.

TerredeHaut Guadeloupe

Terre-de-Haut, Guadeloupe

It's easy to see why Guadeloupe has long been a favourite vacation spot among French tourists – particularly the small cluster of islands known as Îles des Saintes (or Les Saintes). Terre-de-Haut is the largest of the islands, and is almost like a miniature Rio de Janeiro , with incredible beaches and mountains tucked into its five square miles. Make sure to check out the reefs rich with marine life off of Pain de Sucre ("Sugar Loaf" Beach), and climb up the 170-foot Sugar Loaf Hill for a once-in-a-lifetime photograph.

Old Havana Cuba

Old Havana, Cuba

From the pastel buildings of Old Havana to the rich green moss of Metropolitan Park, Havana is as colourful as it is energetic. Most of the city's architecture appears frozen in the 1950s – and you can lean into that old-school vibe by taking a vintage car tour or sipping a Hemingway Daiquiri in a jazz club.

Grace Bay Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

Far and away one of the best places for a quick escape, Turks and Caicos checks almost every box, from private island spa retreats to stretches of empty beaches and crystal-clear water. The island of Providenciales in particular has some of the world's loveliest white sand beaches, namely 12-mile Grace Bay on the north shore. (Be sure to pack sunglasses: When we say white sand, we mean blindingly white sand.)

Gustavia St. Barts

Gustavia, St. Barth's

While any mention of this island tends to conjure up images of Rolexes and caviar, the tony territory has enough natural beauty and scenic views to give any 5-star St Barth's hotel a run for its money. One of the best ways to explore the island is to start your day with a morning walk around the capital, Gustavia, a tidy collection of old, red-roofed buildings clad in volcanic stone. Soak in the views before stopping into one of the town's great restaurants or fish markets.

Playa Grande Beach Club Dominican Republic

Playa Grande Beach Club, Dominican Republic

Drop all those notions of tequila shots and spring breakers: Playa Grande Beach Club will make a believer out of even the harshest Dominican Republic critic. The haute boho retreat only has nine bungalows stretched over a 2,000-acre plot of land, with direct access to a wide beach ideal for surfing. And the interiors are nearly as stunning as the surroundings: think lacy Victorian architecture, pink and green tiled floors, and free-standing copper tubs in the bathrooms.

Bonaire National Marine Park Bonaire

Bonaire National Marine Park, Bonaire

Only 50 miles from South America , Bonaire is the farthest east of the ABC Islands. And while the island has a dry, rather foreboding desert landscape, its true beauty can be found just below the surrounding waters. The entire coral reef around Bonaire is a national park (Bonaire National Marine Park), with brightly coloured coral and wildlife ranging from nurse sharks and seahorses to friendly green turtles.

Belle Mont Farm on Kittitian Hill St. Kitts

Belle Mont Farm on Kittitian Hill, St. Kitts

St. Kitts is known for its sugarcane fields and well-preserved Brimstone Hill fortresses, but the island also houses some of our favourite luxury hotels. For sophisticated lodgings with a view, book a stay at Belle Mont Farm on Kittitian Hill . Situated on the northwestern slopes of Mount Liamuiga, some of the resort's biggest draws are the private plunge pools and outdoor clawfoot tubs overlooking the sea.

Shirley Heights, Antigua

Antigua mixes tropical beauty with British history – just look at the candy-coloured colonial buildings and much-touted 365 beaches to choose from. Overlooking the English Harbour (which fills with boats during the island's annual yacht regatta), Shirley Heights should be on your itinerary: Soaking in the views of that curved coastline is a truly unforgettable experience.

Morne Trois Pitons National Park Dominica

Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Dominica

You can find some great beaches on Dominica, sure, but the real appeal of the island lies a bit further inland. We're talking about the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a tropical rainforest with some of the best flora and fauna in the entire Caribbean. The park is perhaps best known for its boiling lake and hot springs, but we'd just as happily visit for the giant ferns, colourful flowers, and the chance to hike through a cloud forest.

Altamer Resort Anguilla

Altamer Resort, Anguilla

The British Overseas Territory of Anguilla (just north of the dual-nation island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin) is the place to get away from it all. And there's no better place to go off the grid than Altamer Resort , located on the famously gorgeous Shoal Bay West beach. The resort features private villas with sunny bedrooms, curated artwork, and swimming pools right outside the door. Plus, the ultra-modern, Myron Goldfinger-designed buildings are unlike anything you'll see anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Old San Juan Puerto Rico

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

More than a year after Hurricane Maria made landfall, Puerto Rico has not only recovered, it’s been reborn. You can find world-class beaches all over the island, but PR is perfect for architecture lovers as well: Old San Juan remains one of the best-preserved examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in the Caribbean, with brightly painted buildings and cobblestone streets on every corner.

Tobago Cays St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Tobago Cays, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Of course, no visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines would be complete without a day (or 10) devoted to sailing. You'll never be far from land here, but most excursion boats anchor at Tobago Cays – and for good reason. The marine reserve comprises five uninhabited islands that are exceptional, even by Caribbean standards.

Renaissance Island Aruba

Renaissance Island, Aruba

The second largest of the Dutch ABC islands, Aruba is one of the Caribbean's best islands for beaches – and you're guaranteed to find a great hotel on nearly every stretch of sand. For a more intimate beach experience, head to the privately-owned Renaissance Island, complete with shallow coves, overwater bungalows, and – best of all – a population of bright pink flamingos.

Dunn's River Falls Jamaica

Dunn's River Falls, Jamaica

If Jamaica's Dunn's River Falls look familiar, you may have spotted them on the big screen: The falls appeared in the very first James Bond film from 1962, Dr. No , when Ursula Andress seductively emerges from the water. Hollywood fame aside, the watery attraction is a must-visit for any Jamaican itinerary. The small pools that collect in the tiers of travertine rock have become a popular place to take a soak, while the bigger rocks surrounding the falls attract lines of people wanting to jump into the water.

St. George's Grenada

St. George's, Grenada

St. George's could easily be mistaken for an Italian coastal town , with brightly coloured houses and churches lined up along the turquoise water. But unlike Italy, travellers can get to Grenada's capital city from New York in under five hours, leaving more time to enjoy the island's coral reefs, buzzing food markets, and vendors selling local nutmeg and cinnamon.

Willemstad Curaçao

Willemstad, Curaçao

Although Curaçao has often been dwarfed by its sister island, Aruba, there are plenty of reasons to visit the “middle child” of the Dutch ABC Islands. For starters, the 17th-century, UNESCO-protected capital city of Willemstad is as pretty as it is historic. With its pastel-coloured Dutch and Portuguese-inspired buildings, the architecture here will impress you from every angle.

Viñales Valley Cuba

Viñales Valley, Cuba

Cuba is a treasure trove of natural beauty, with miles of mountain ranges and tobacco fields, plus some awesome beaches. The region also happens to encompass Viñales Valley, arguably one of the most beautiful spots in the entire country. With its dome-like limestone formations and lush landscapes, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is the perfect place to watch the sunset.

Citadelle Laferrière Haiti

Citadelle Laferrière, Haiti

Often overlooked, Haiti continues to amaze with its fantastic hiking and dozens of near-empty beaches – not to mention its vibrant modern art scene and cultural events. Set aside a day to trek up to Citadelle Laferrière (usually referred to as simply “the Citadelle”), an abandoned French fortress near the northern village of Milot. Upon reaching the castle, travellers are rewarded with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean – on clear days, you can even spot Cuba in the distance.

Trunk Bay St. John

Trunk Bay, St. John

Sitting in the northwestern corner of the Virgin Islands National Park, Trunk Bay is undeniably one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean – if not the world. Calm, clear water and a 225-yard-long underwater trail for snorkelling are big draws, as are hiking trails up and into the surrounding greenery, filled with the ruins of historic sugar cane plantations.

Bathsheba Beach Barbados

Bathsheba Beach, Barbados

Rugged, wild, and untouched, Bathsheba Beach may be the star attraction of Barbados – and unlike many of the island's pool clubs, this stretch of sand doesn't require a membership fee. Photographers and surfers flock here to catch the best waves and snap some shots of the beach's huge boulders. It's not an ideal place for swimming , but that shouldn't stop you from lounging on the shoreline for a few hours.

Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach Sucasa Villa

Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico

When it comes to superlative Caribbean hotels , this Ritz-Carlton Reserve takes the cake. The hotel has undergone many transformations, including after Hurricane Maria in 2017, but Dorado Beach is still all about sea, sand, and lush greenery. Other lovely touches here include beach-facing terraces, outdoor rainforest showers, and a lily pond flanked by wooden walkways.

Dutch buildings in Willemstad, Curacao

The island of Curacao is unique because instead of the subdued blue and green colors that you see on buildings on other islands, you will see a vibrant and colorful Dutch influence in the historic architecture. The port city of Willemstad has a fun energy and old European flare, but the beaches are still the main draw.

The snorkeling and diving are excellent on Curacao, and many coral reefs are easy to access. Cas Abao Beach and Playa Lagun are top beaches on the island. It is easy to rent water sports equipment on the island or take a diving lesson.

Anse Marcel beach on St. Martin

The small island of St. Martin is a bit more active with tourists than some other Caribbean islands. It is a dual-owned island, so one side is French and the other side is Dutch.

The beaches are tranquil and plentiful, so you can try a new one each day of your vacation. Orient Bay, Mulley Bay, and Cupecoy Beach are popular, but there are plenty of others to enjoy.

There are many non-beach activities on St. Martin, like ziplining near the Pic du Pardis mountains, snorkeling, and sailing. Day trips to Anguilla are popular and easy to book from St. Martin. You can also do a catamaran tour around the island.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

The 32 islands that make up St. Vincent and the Grenadines capture the pure essence of the Caribbean with their remoteness and quiet tropical breezes. These are popular islands for anyone who wants to just lay in a hammock beneath a shade tree or soak in the sun next to the turquoise water, and not do much else.

If you do feel like exploring, there are plenty of attractions and things to do , from snorkeling, sailing, and hiking, to island-hopping. The charm of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is their many hideaways and small islands, which will make you feel like you have the tropical paradise to yourself.

There are many boutique hotels and resorts on the islands. While December through April is the popular season to visit, you can find nice hotel discounts and the same 80-degree temperatures by planning your trip in May, June, or November.

Paradise Island, Nassau

The Bahamas are popular tourist islands with more than 700 of them dotting the Caribbean waters.

The capital city of Nassau is a common port for cruise ships, so you will find attractions to fill your time like shopping, beaches, markets, Paradise Island, and the Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre.

Some of the other islands in the Bahamas like Exuma , Eleuthera , Harbor Island , and Abaco have spectacular things to do like fishing, relaxing on beaches, diving, swimming in hidden coves, and exploring natural parks.

You can find lots of all-inclusive resorts in the Bahamas that take the guesswork out of planning, whether you are going for a romantic vacation or a family getaway.

Lots of people like to head to the Bahamas for a winter getaway from mid-December through mid-April. That is the ideal time to go to enjoy the Bahamas' consistently perfect weather outside of hurricane season, but you will have higher prices and more crowds during those months.

Tropical waterfall in Basse Terre, Guadeloupe

If you are looking for a more secluded Bahamas vacation in an unspoiled setting, then Guadeloupe will appeal to you.

This French Caribbean island is more rustic than other islands. Guadeloupe is made up of Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre , two isles separated by the Salée River and a cluster of smaller islands. You can spend a full week in each region or divide your vacation into day trips visiting the top attractions and sightseeing destinations.

Some of the highlights in Guadeloupe include hiking and birdwatching at the Guadeloupe National Park, snorkeling at the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve, and soaking in the tropical gardens at the Jardin Botanique de Deshaies.

Guadeloupe is covered in lush forests and picturesque waterfalls, so there is always a quiet place to escape to, even during the busy months of December through May when the weather is ideal on the islands.

The seasons in the Caribbean are somewhat similar, but some months will see more rain than others, and the experiences on the islands vary at different times of the year. Spring Spring is a nice time to visit the Caribbean. March and April are still in the high season window, so prices will remain at a premium but deals can be found outside of spring break.

There are still a large number of tourists in the early spring, especially with spring break schedules. Late spring, in May, ushers in the shoulder season, so it is a nice time to go, when you have a balance of great weather and lower prices.

Spring temperatures are very warm and there is little rainfall. Beach days are optimal, and swimming, snorkeling, and diving are great, with clear and calm water before hurricane season arrives in June.

Summer The summer months of June, July, and August are the low season in the Caribbean . This is the time to snag great deals on resort stays and take advantage of additional perks that are usually offered to attract tourists, like free nights and dinners. The tourist crowds are gone during the summer months, opening up availability at resorts and giving you more room on the beach.

Summer is also the start of the turtle nesting season , which generally goes through October. If you are traveling to see the turtles, then this is an ideal time to visit. Check with your specific islands of interest to get detailed information on nesting locations, schedules, and excursions. The downside to visiting the Caribbean during the summer months is that it is the beginning of hurricane season and hot. You may run the risk of encountering a major storm.

June has more rain than July and August, which are usually sunny months. The summer has higher temperatures (averaging in the mid-to-upper 80s Fahrenheit) and high humidity, which is uncomfortable for some travelers.

Fall The fall months in the Caribbean are still within prime hurricane season and less popular months for tourists. September, October, and November are on the Caribbean shoulder season so there are a few advantages of going just before the high season starts in December. You can get great prices for hotels and airfare during these months and there are fewer people on the islands.

Fall is a great time to look for last-minute getaway deals on resorts and Caribbean cruises.

One bonus of visiting during the fall is the shorebird migration, which takes place as birds make their way from their northern nesting sites to their southern winter sites in South America. This is an opportunity to see dozens of species that cannot be seen otherwise. You should refer to the migration details of the country that you plan to visit to more precisely target the timeframe for that region.

The caution for fall Caribbean travel is that it is still hurricane season . While most days will have mild and comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and less rain than in the summer, there is always a risk of a hurricane or tropical storm. It is best to purchase trip insurance if you plan to travel in the fall.

Winter The winter months of December, January, and February are the best time to visit the Caribbean. These are the ideal months to travel, with the best beach weather, tours in full swing, and sites open on the islands ready to cater to tourists. The winter months have the least rainfall .

The Caribbean islands are an easy travel choice, especially for North American tourists wanting to escape from the snow and cold weather. Flights are frequent to the Caribbean islands, and with so many to choose from, it is easy to book a winter vacation. You will also have an abundance of Caribbean cruise options during these months.

The only downside to booking a Caribbean vacation in the winter is the cost. Since this is high season, you can expect to pay a premium for hotels and resorts, flights, cruises, and tours. Early Availability is also reduced during the popular months, but with so many islands to visit, you should have no problem if you plan several months ahead.

Early January is typically quieter than the rest of the winter after the Christmas crowds have gone home and before people plan winter vacations.

The 8 best places to visit in the Caribbean

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Not all Caribbean islands are the same. Here's how to find the right one for you © Roberto Moiola / Sysaworld / Getty Images

The ultimate tropical getaway, the Caribbean conjures images of palm-fringed beaches, rum-fueled dancing and lush jungle excursions. Pick any of the 700-odd islands that form an arc between Florida and Venezuela  and you’ll get all these things and more.

Rich in African culture brought to the region by the trade of enslaved people, the islands are also steeped variously in British, Spanish, French and Dutch heritage, making the Caribbean one of the most culturally diverse places on the planet and lending each island its own idiosyncrasies.

Whether you’re looking for a party city or a family-friendly destination, we’ll help you decide where to go. Here are the eight best places to visit in the Caribbean.

Best for beaches

Boasting a beach for each day of the year, low-lying Antigua in the Leeward Islands delivers a multitude of postcard-perfect beaches, with coral reefs just a flipper-kick from shore. Depending on where you are, the hue shifts from brilliant white through rose gold to cotton candy pink.

Choose between a beach lined with lively bars blaring out soca tunes, or a near-deserted strip of sand where it’ll be just you and the odd pelican diving for fish.

If you want to join picnicking locals, head to Jolly Beach on the west coast; for solitude, try Half Moon Bay in the southeast, and for tree-shaded golden sands, head to Pigeon Beach on the edge of Falmouth Harbor.

The World Heritage Twin Pitons are framed by sunlit flowers in the early morning. Focus on flowers, with Pitons fading into background.

2. The Pitons, St Lucia

Best for hiking

These iconic twin peaks are St Lucia ’s most photographed attraction, which isn't surprising, as they tower more than half a mile above sea level and can be viewed from as far north as the capital Castries.

Gros Piton, the largest of the peaks, is the one to scale (Petit Piton has near-vertical slabs and climbing is restricted). Start at sunrise and you’ll be at the top before the heat of the midday sun. January, February and March are great months to visit because the soil will be dry.

Wake to an up-close view of these verdant volcanic plugs by staying at Ladera Resort , which offers rooms that are completely open to the rainforest.

Planning tip: Book a guide from Gros Piton Tour Guides Association  and you’ll not only make it to the summit without losing the path, but you'll also learn the history of Fond Gens Libre, a settlement that played an important role in the 1748 slave rebellion (and the hike's starting point), and find out about the flora and fauna of the rainforest you pass through.

3. Habana Vieja, Cuba

Best old town

The most populated and most visited city in Cuba and one of the best cities in the Caribbean, beguiling Havana is associated with Hemingway and Cadillacs, music-filled theaters and grand rum bars.

The Havana you’re looking for is the old town, known in Spanish as Habana Vieja , where you can wander narrow streets, admire the architecture of restored Spanish buildings, stop to listen to a street-side salsa or son band and dip in and out of the various museums, churches and palaces that make up this Unesco World Heritage Site.

The city hums in the day, but at night it’s all-singing, all-dancing. To soak up the vibe head to Plaza Vieja , pull up a chair on the terrace of one of the many bars and cafes and be entertained by roving bands.

Then head to the 200-year-old bar El Floridita , where Ernest Hemingway famously knocked back daiquiris after a day at the typewriter.

4. Bonaire Marine Park

Best for snorkeling

Bonaire is the B in the Dutch ABC islands and lies to the east of Aruba and Curaçao, just off the coast of Venezuela in the southern Caribbean. Something of a trailblazer, the island turned its entire coastline – and that of neighboring Klein Bonaire – into a 6400-acre marine park in the late 1970s.

The island has about 90 dive and snorkel sites where you can explore the protected underwater world , mostly situated among the sheltered coral reefs off the west coast. This is a good place to visit in July, because it is south of the hurricane belt.

Planning tip: Divers and snorkelers must pay the marine park nature fee, which is $25 for non-scuba visitors and $45 for scuba divers, and is valid for a year. You can purchase it directly from the National Parks Foundation .

5. The Grenadines

Best for sailing

An archipelago stretching 60 miles from St Vincent in the south to Grenada in the north, the Grenadines  feel remote and largely untouched by tourism.

With the challenge of occasional strong Atlantic winds and the reward of calm waters on deserted beaches (minus the odd rum shack), this is some of the best sailing in the world for the competent sailor. Passages between the islands only take an hour or two, so you’ll get plenty of downtime too.

Planning tip: This is a good place to visit in July, August, September or October, because it’s south of the hurricane belt. Start your charter in St Vincent and finish in Grenada for an easier sail. Easterly trade winds make it harder to sail north up the chain.

6. Inagua, The Bahamas

Best for wildlife lovers

The southernmost island group in the Bahamas is made up of two islands. Despite its name, Great Inagua only has a population of about 1200 people, but its flamingo population exceeds 80,000 birds, flocking around aptly named Lake Rosa. And Little Inagua is the largest uninhabited island in the Caribbean, becoming a national park in 2002.

These remote islands are a haven for ecotourism, and visitors come to see the flamingos, parrots, pelicans and 140 other native and migratory birds that can be spotted here.

Planning tip: Travel by mail boat from Nassau , which is 320 miles northwest, or fly into Great Inagua airport. To visit Little Inagua, a nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, you’ll need to ask a fisherman to take you by boat. The best time to see the turtles hatching is between August and September.

Tourist learning to windsurf at a busy Punta Cana beach

7. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Best for families

The glut of family-friendly hotels that hug the “coconut coast” on the east of the Dominican Republic make this a fun-filled place to go if you’re looking for an easy family holiday in the Caribbean.

The child-free may want to actively avoid the area, but if it’s an all-inclusive hotel with a waterslide you’re after, then you’ll find no shortage among the popular brands jostling for attention.

Whether you want five-star luxury, such as that found at Bahia Principe Fantasia Punta Cana , which has a fairytale palace astride the swimming pool, or the recognizable cartoon characters found at the Nickelodeon resort , you’ll find a hotel to please the whole family.

8. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Best for partying

Wherever you are on the island of Puerto Rico you’re never more than a couple of hours by car from San Juan , the island’s capital. This means there’s no excuse not to spend at least one night of your holiday partying Puerto Rico style.

A night out in San Juan is a raucous affair, generally centered around the old town, which has the highest concentration of bars and clubs.

You’ll find piña coladas served until the early hours, but not in La Factoria , which is taking the island’s mixology to the next level (and often features on lists of best bars). Here you can try signature cocktails such as the lavender mule, made with ginger tea, lavender cordial and Ketel One vodka.

For a street-party vibe, head to La Placita de Santurce , which by day is the location of the fruit and veg market and by night filled with the sounds of salsa.

This is one of the best places to visit in the Caribbean in December or early January because the Christmas period (from December 15 to January 6) is even more of a party than usual.

Saint Barts

For the disposition of the French countryside (French is its official language) in the laid-back, sunny Caribbean, make your way to Saint Barts’s rolling hills and turquoise waters. Its high-end restaurants, upscale hotels, and designer stores invite many visitors by yacht or private plane, or you can fly to a nearby island and take transportation to it.

Grand Cayman

aerial view of stingrays at stingray city on grand cayman

Come to Grand Cayman for the white beaches (don’t miss Seven Mile Beach), but stay for the food at the culinary capital of the Caribbean. Snorkeling and diving is fantastic all over the island, but a highlight is exploring the Kittiwake Shipwreck for a unique dive site. Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, but you can also visit Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

Where to Stay: The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman

Saint Croix

No passport is needed to get to the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands! There you’ll have your choice of lively beaches (like Rainbow Beach) and secluded beaches, and you might even see a sea turtle on the beach at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to explore Buck Island right off the island’s northeast coast too.

Where to Stay: The Buccaneer Hotel

Virgin Gorda

the baths beautiful untouched beach in virgin gorda, bvi

For a slow paced island, make your way to Virgin Gorda. It has scenic, quiet beaches like Spring Bay and Savannah Bay, but there’s also a reason more people make their way to explore large rock boulders and sea grottos at The Baths in the southwestern end of the island. Explore the northeastern side of the island for the most dramatic scenery.

Where to Stay: Rosewood Little Dix Bay

view on the village bourg des anses darlet

This small hidden gem of a French Caribbean island is known as the rum capital of the world, so be sure to visit at least one of its historic distilleries. Located between Dominica and St. Lucia, it of course has its fare share of beautiful beaches too, with Anse Dufour being arguably one of the most beautiful and Grande Anse du Diamant being one of the largest.

Where to Stay: Hotel La Pagerie

st george's, grenada wi

With 45 beaches and countless remote coves, this independent island boasts mountainous rain forests in its interior, like one giant, lush garden. Many of its hotels, resorts, and restaurants are family-owned, and locals are known for their hospitality and friendliness. As its nickname “Spice of the Caribbean” connotes, its production of nutmeg and other spices make the island breeze aromatic and sweet.

Where to Stay: Spice Island Beach Resort

Saint Martin

aerial view of islands of st maarten

Nicknamed “The Friendly Island,” this beachy destination is Dutch Sint Maarten on its south end and French Saint Martin on the north end, offering the distinct cultures of both. Its 37 beaches are ripe for swimming and snorkeling alike, and some are only accessible by hiking trail or boat. For a beach break, you can wander the cobblestone streets of Dutch Philipsburg and take in the views from the ruins of Louis Fort.

Where to Stay: La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel

Saint Kitts and Nevis

a view of nevis island

This two-island nation is underdeveloped and perfect for travelers who love nature and a relaxed getaway to sandy beaches and lush rainforests. While there, you can tour one of the oldest rum distilleries in the Caribbean at Old Rum Road Company and explore a rainforest farm at Liamuiga Natural Farm on Mount Laimuiga on Saint Kitts. If you stay on Saint Kitts, take a day trip over to the less developed Nevis (or vice-versa) and explore their hiking trails and Botanical Gardens.

Where to Stay: Belle Mont Sanctuary Resort

Saint Lucia

st lucia's twin pitons at sunrise

Saint Lucia's white beaches shimmer, and its awe-inspiring pitons peak up above behind it, with lush leafy palms and fruit trees blossoming in between. Further inland you can hike through the rainforest that takes up 70 percent of the island, or you can traverse to get a picture-perfect view of Marigot Bay or Rodney Bay Village or visit the Caribbean’s only "drive-in volcano" in Soufrière .

Where to Stay: Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort

No, not the Dominican Republic. Dominica remains the best-kept secret in the region and is without a doubt one of the area's most beautiful islands. Dominica is called "the nature island" of the Caribbean—and for good reason. Amid its lush and protected interior, it has the best hiking in the area, including the longest continuous trail, the 115-mile Waitukubuli Trail . This volcanic isle also boasts a river for every day of the year, with 365 freshwater streams in its verdant, jungle footprint.

Where to Stay: Secret Bay

Andros, Bahamas

Of the Bahamas' nearly 700 islands, Andros is the largest and feels like an unspoiled escape. Known as the Blue Hole Capital of the World, Andros offers the Caribbean's signature turquoise waters and the recognizable beauty of more than 150 blue holes; some are even preserved in the 40,000-acre Blue Holes National Park . The island is also home to the world's third-largest barrier reef.

Where to Stay: Small Hope Bay Lodge

caribbean, netherlands antilles, bonaire, pink beach

Bonaire is famed as a diver's paradise for its 85+ dive sites, but there's more to this little island's beauty than the deep blue sea (it is noteworthy, though, that 100% of the ocean surrounding the island is a protected marine park). Beyond that, colorful architecture in the capital Kralendijk, the dreamy salt pans full of flamingos, and the Netherlands' oldest national park are just a few of the compelling reasons to visit this small Dutch overseas territory.

Where to Stay: Harbour Village Beach Club

Antigua, Antigua & Barbuda

antigua

Much of Antigua's beauty stems from its famous white sand beaches, but the sweeping harbor views offered at Shirley Heights in the island's southern reaches are some of the prettiest vistas in the entire Caribbean. There, sparkling white yachts stand out against the aquamarine water. Antigua's intricate coastline, rife with bays and natural harbors, makes it an especially attractive destination.

Where to Stay: Hermitage Bay

willemstad

This Dutch tropical escape stuns in the southern Caribbean with more than 35 beaches and the colorful, UNESCO-recognized capital city of Willemstad. Multiple national parks help preserve local flora and fauna and keep part of the island wild.

Where to Stay: Baoase Luxury Resort

aerial view of sailboats in sanders bay, charlotte amalie, saint john, united states virgin islands

In terms of natural beauty, no other island can compete with Saint John in the United States Virgin Islands. Virgin Islands National Park , one of the nation's least visited, covers two-thirds of the island, preserving it for generations to come. Rolling hills, lush with vegetation, tumble into the sea and provide excellent outlooks for sweeping vistas from this island paradise.

Where to Stay: Gallows Point Resort

Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

drone photo of pier in grace bay, providenciales, turks and caicos

Turks and Caicos is a well-known destination in the Caribbean, though its star is the island of Providenciales. Its massive Grace Bay Beach, often called the world's most beautiful, features calm, turquoise waters emblematic of the region.

Where to Stay: The Palms Turks and Caicos

scenic view of sea against sky, anguilla

An especially luxe isle, Anguilla is an Eastern Caribbean gem. The island is a British overseas territory famous for palm-fringed beaches, upscale hotels, and the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Don't miss the limestone cave formations which decorate many of the gorgeous 33 public beaches.

1. St. Lucia

beautiful caribbean islands st lucia

St. Lucia is arguably the most beautiful of all Caribbean Islands with its two UNESCO World Heritage designated Pitons standing proud. The Gros and Petit Pitons are two mountainous volcanic plugs that definitely contribute to the island’s beauty. With white sandy beaches, dense jungles, and private villas dotting the coast, this is our number one choice for travel to the Caribbean for honeymooners and couples.

When looking for a private villa in St. Lucia check out these two magnificent resorts that we stayed at. Calabash Cove  is a luxury boutique all-inclusive resort and spa that caters to adults only. We loved our stay here and it had everything we could hope for in a romantic vacation. Stonefield Villas Resort  has incredible views of the Petit Piton. It is locally owned and operated and was one of the first resorts opened near Soufriere.

Islands in Exuma Cays Bahamas

When flying over the Exumas from Nassau in the Bahamas , our jaws dropped as the beautiful scene transpired below. The Exuma Cays of the Bahamas consists of 365 islands and atolls dotting gin blue waters. Spanning 176 miles of crystal clear waters. While technically in the Atlantic, The Exumas are often lumped in with the Caribbean Islands and we couldn’t do this list without including our favorite island paradise.

The Exumas have some of the best animal encounters in the Caribbean where you can swim with sharks, meet the resident pigs, and at Major Cay and snorkel in the surreal Thunderball Grotto that feels like its own colorful fishbowl. If you are looking for a great place to stay, check out Embrace Resorts on Staniel Cay . It is locally owned and operated and is a wonderful couple’s escape in the heart of the Exumas.

The Cayman Islands are one of the best places in the Caribbean Islands to go scuba diving. They are also one of the most beautiful Caribbean Islands that we’ve seen. With its own Seven Mile Beach, we could walk for days on its white sand leading out to crystal clear turquoise waters.

The Cayman Islands are famous for their clear waters. The deep drop wall dives, Cayman Trench allow for deep diving in crystal clear water and endless visibility. We stayed in the Ritz Grand Cayman on Seven Mile Beach and it was heavenly. If there is one place to splurge on a Caribbean vacation, it is at the Cayman Islands.

Sitting on the beach in Cozumel bests caribbean islands

One of our favorite Caribbean destinations is Mexico , and the Island of Cozumel is located just off the coast in the Caribbean Sea. Cozumel is famous for its scuba diving and nowhere compares to diving here on Palancar Reef.

It’s the second-largest coral reef in the world! With turquoise water, and powdery white sand world-class diving, it should be at the top of your Mexican vacation. One of the best things to do is to head to another paradise island, Isla Ballestas to swim in its clear blue waters and to book a tour to see whale sharks migrating through. We had the opportunity to visit the beautiful island of Curacao on a Caribbean cruise. Its colorful waterfront completely blew us away. Part of the ABC Islands (including Aruba and Bonaire) Curaçao is a Dutch colony in the Lesser Antilles. It is known as the Amsterdam of the Caribbean, and for good reason.

The colonial architecture lines the waterfront and Curacao also houses beautiful beaches and quiet coves. The trade winds keep this Caribbean island a pleasant temperature year-round and is located outside the hurricane belt, there is not a bad time to visit Curacao. 8. St. Kitts

beset caribbean islands to vacation st kitts

St. Kitts was an island that we had never heard of before visiting. Once we did, we knew that this was a shining star of the Caribbean Islands. Hiking to the top of the volcano Mt. Liamuiga offers views of the thick rainforest that dominates the mountainous island. Or take a zipline adventure to see the green jungle from above.

With waterfalls, long sandy beaches, and a cloud forest St. Kitts is definitely an island to put on your Caribbean Bucket List. But what is the best thing to do in St. Kitts? Limin’ of course. (it’s the endearing term to relax.) And here’s a fun fact, this island has monkeys!

best Caribbean Islands of Nevis is Beautiful

Located right next door to St. Kitts, Nevis is a volcanic island that is considered a twin island to St. Kitts. With golden sand beaches, old plantations, and old-fashioned rustic charm, the Caribbean Island of Nevis is quickly growing to the top of many people’s favorite Caribbean islands.

The crystal clear waters are perfect for snorkeling and like St. Kitts, it too has a population of African Green Vervet Monkeys. Check out 13 Unique Beaches To Visit in Your Lifetime

beautiful Caribbean Islands to visit Aruba

Aruba is another one of the ABC Islands of the Caribbean. Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are the three westernmost islands of the Leeward Antilles in the South Caribbean. Like Curacao, it is located outside the hurricane belt, has the lovely trade winds to keep temperatures constant, and houses the classic white sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Caribbean islands. There are also some pretty cool landscapes to explore.

Aruba is known for its powdery soft sand beaches and since all beaches in Aruba are public, you are free to go beach hopping to explore the beauty for yourself. And like Curacao, Aruba has pastel Dutch colonial architecture that is great for strolling through pretty streets while shopping. Read next: Best Unique Cruises on Seven Continents

Dave and I took our honeymoon in the Dominican Republic and it has always had an affection for this beautiful island. The beaches of the Dominican Republic are postcard-perfect with luxury resorts lining the coasts of Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and La Romana.

13. Utila, Honduras

best caribbean islands utila

Utila is located off the coast of Honduras and was the island where we took our divemasters course many years ago. Utila is certainly one of the most beautiful places to visit in Honduras with secluded beaches and great cheap diving. We swam with whale sharks and explored its extensive underwater world while enjoying seafood on the beach or lazing on a hammock while watching the sunset. Check out Honduras Travel Guide

14. Caye Caulker, Belize

best islands in the caribbean Cay Caulker in Belize

Caye Caulker is an incredible laid-back island in Belize . We chilled on Caye Caulker marveling at the beautiful sandy island. The neighboring island of Ambergris Caye may be more popular, but we loved the laid-back vibe of Caye Caulker . It has some of the best Snorkeling and diving in the Caribbean with Shark Ray Alley located just off its coast.

What we loved the most about Caye Caulker is that there are no cars on the island and we walked through the sandy streets chillaxing on this island paradise. Yes, this is a theme of all Caribbean Islands, and that is what makes the Caribbean such an incredible vacation destination. The beaches of Turks and Caicos were created by coral breaks creating beaches of white sands, pink sands, and peach hues.

16. Barbados

best Islands in the Caribbean barbados

Barbados is probably at the top of most people’s Caribbean island dream list. It is the most easterly of all Caribbean Islands. In fact, Barbados isn’t technically even in the Caribbean, it’s located entirely in the Atlantic Ocean. Located in the Lesser Antilles, Barbados has soft sand lining the turquoise waters.

Speaking of Saint Martin, Sint Maarten is made up of two territories. One French and one dutch. St. Maarten is the Caribbean Island that is famous for airplanes landing extremely close to beachgoers. It’s known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean there are also a lot of adventures to be had.

From the world’s steepest zip line to climbing Pic du Paradis Mountain there is a lot more to do than just relaxing on its pristine beaches. When visiting St. Maarten you can also go Caribbean island hopping on day trips to nearby Aguilla, Saba, or St. Barths.

19. U.S. Virgin Islands

best caribbean islands us virgin islands

I am so jealous that the United States has its own tropical islands. Canada was once trying to get a tropical island where we could easily escape our winters, but the country wouldn’t let Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau purchase it. So alas, we look on with envy to our neighbors to the south.

The US Virgin Islands consist of St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas and they are known to have some of the world’s most stunning beaches, with crystal clear waters and soft white sand. The islands are surrounded by lush green hills and mountains, offering a beautiful contrast to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

This island is so appealing to Americans because you do not need a passport to visit it if you are an American citizen. Lucky you!

20. British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands have some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. White sand, turquoise waters, and lush greenery make for a stunning natural setting. They are known for their excellent sailing and boating opportunities. With over 60 islands and cays, which makes island hopping is a popular activity. Each island has its own character and charm, from the quiet and secluded Jost Van Dyke to the lively and cosmopolitan Tortola.

It is also committed to eco-tourism, with a focus on sustainable development and preserving the natural environment. Visitors can participate in activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and visiting nature reserves and national parks.

27 thoughts on “20 Most Beautiful Caribbean Islands to Put on The Bucket List”

It’s nice to reread this. I like the topic because I love beaches and water activities.

Again, very nice places to travel with. Jamaica was so beautiful, thanks a lot for sharing!

Great places, indeed! It looks like paradise to me. My kids and I love nature. So I hope we will experience exploring great places in the Caribbean islands.

Have you ever been to Dominica? Not the Dominican Republic but Dominica. It rivals St. Lucia in natural beauty and until you have visited all Caribbean Islands you can’t declare just one as the most beautiful.

How could you not mention Isla Providencia ?

That’s a shame they left out the French Polynesia islands I’ve been there many years ago beautiful place and the people are great. Now I want to go to the Caribbean Islands they look fabulous and the water crystal clear Wow

And none of the French islands are mentioned ? this is a very biased review !

The best part of going to the French Polynesia islands you have to go through Tahiti first then catch a small puddle jump er to Bora Bora and the other islands there you can stay for 3 months with out a visa

How come you omit the Anguilla ? It has the best beaches in the Caribbean which are unspoiled by the tourist craze.

Some wonderful choices. We will not agree on all the choices and their order in this article, but in general, the Caribbean is a most beautiful location. The concept of beauty differs from one person’s perspective to another.

St. Lucia. Simply BEAUTIFUL. The MOST AMAZING Caribbean island in the world. With two distinguished NOBEL LAUREATES,, BEST CARIBBEAN CUISINE,, MOST AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL TOURIST ATTRACTIONS. What more can I say!!!!

I’ve been to st Lucia for my nieces’s wedding. The beach was not good (I was told we were on the Atlantic side that’s why), some of the people were NOT friendly, and the food was basic. Their only attraction were the Pitons which was just ok. I have no idea why they are at the top of your list. Sorry, but I couldn’t wait to leave.

Sorry you had a bad time in St. Lucia, there are so many things to do there and it truly is a beautiful island. That is why we encourage people to get off the resort. Sometimes and entire experience can be based on staying at the wrong resort. Hopefully your next Caribbean Island vacation goes better.

You forgot Antigua and Barbuda that’s a crime. ?

When it comes to beautification st kitts is the number one in the caribbean yes it might be small but look how it has developed over the pass fifteen years.i think you have made a mistake by giving st lucia the number one spot I’ve been to st lucia and the capital is still old that needs lots of work that’s my opinion

Thank you for visiting St.Kitts! A shinning star of the Caribbean. St.kitts and Nevis lovely people.

I’m surprised that Saint Vincent and the grenadines was not on your list. It is comprised of 32 islands. It is also where One of the installment of Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed, as well as my native home home. St. Vincent also has some amazing black sandy beaches.

Your choices are great but you left out the British Virgin Islands (BVI). It’s a must place to visit.

I am elated to see my country Saint Lucia the top country on the list yay thank you whoever it is

Sorry, but we just spent 7 days in Saba, and it has to be the most awe-inspiring island in the Caribbean!! I agree with many of your choices, but we have never been anywhere like Saba.

Surely some of them have added to my bucket list. Thank You for sharing this amazing information.

SUCH A AMAZING PLACE! THANK YOU FOR SHARING…..

For your information Trinidad and Tobago has monkeys as well they are the Red Howler monkey, the White-fronted capuchin monkey and the Tufted capuchin monkey also Tobago’s beautiful Forest Reserve which was legally established in 1776 but started since 1774 is one of the oldest protected areas in the world. We have 470 species of birds where there are only 270 species in the whole of the rest of the Caribbean and Trinidad has the Ocelot is a wild Spotted cat also found in Southern North America (Texas), Central America, Central and Northern South America, Trinidad is the only known Caribbean island that they are found in. Please do not give readers false information. We have animals in Trinidad and Tobago that cannot be found anywhere else in the Caribbean. Thank you

Yes I agree with you

Do not forget about TNT has the most amazing & loving people in the history of amazing & loving people EVER.

I certainly agree. It is a hidden treasure. The Buccoo Reef in Tobago is a must see. Tobago has tremendous beauty.

25 Most Beautiful Places In The Caribbean — From Emerald-Coloured Sinkholes To Private Islands

There's no shortage of beautiful places in the caribbean. here are some of the most photogenic spots, according to experts..

25 Most Beautiful Places In The Caribbean — From Emerald-Coloured Sinkholes To Private Islands

Lush paradise, turquoise waters, idyllic getaway — these are all phrases often used to describe the beautiful places in the Caribbean. And though this collection of countries in the middle of the ocean contains a shared allure of natural wonders, each one also has its own history and cultural traditions.

I’ve been fortunate to visit a number of Caribbean nations, bordered by white, black, and pink sands below swaying palms, and it never grows old. The vendors with freshly plucked coconuts and plastic cups filled with dark rum to enjoy as the sun sinks into sherbet-coloured clouds. A plate of jerk chicken pulled from a charcoal-fired pit on the side of the road and splashed with mango chutney to cool the scotch bonnet. A parade of smiles and feathers and palatable joy as revellers make their way down the road for Carnival Tuesday. These are all moments that make the Caribbean beautiful.

Below, you’ll find a list of places that expand on that idea, from sustainable, jungle-shrouded hotels without any crowds to flavourful, farm-to-table experiences tucked on quiet hillsides. We tapped two Caribbean experts — writer, editor and on-air travel expert Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon and author and chef Adrian Forte — to help us compile a list of 25 of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean.

The most beautiful places in the Caribbean

Tahiti beach, bahamas.

Tahiti beach

Located on the southern end of Elbow Cay in the Bahamas , and only accessible by foot, boat, or bike, Tahiti Beach stays with you long after you’ve left it. “As many times as I’ve been to the Caribbean and to the Bahamas, you’d think I’d be immune to the beauty of this sandbar, which disappears at high tide. But its silky white sand, surrounded by a swath of iconic Bahamian blue, stuns me every single time,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. Alaska Airlines also recently launched a number of nonstop flights from my hometown of Los Angeles to Nassau, so I’ll be heading back to the country for Carnival next year.

Canouan, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

beautiful places in the caribbean

Untouched by cruise ships and crowds, Canouan is a 3.2-square-mile (8.28 square kilometre) island in the Grenadines, just a 40-minute plane ride from Barbados. It’s home to the jungly Soho Beach House and the coral-hued beachfront Mandarin Oriental . Snorkeling here is also supreme, with water so vibrantly blue, it glows.

Petit St. Vincent, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Petit St. Vincent

With 135 acres of private coastline floating in the Grenadines, Petit St. Vincent is a luxury resort with just 22 cottages steps away from cerulean waters. “Posh but unpretentious, this all-inclusive private island resort is a bit of a haul to reach (from Miami, it takes two planes, a golf cart, and a boat), but the journey is worth it,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “When I’m not reading on the porch of my cottage (all serviced by butlers in a fleet of Mini Mokes), I like to hike up Marni Hill, laze on any (or all) of the four beaches, or sip a rum punch at the beach bar, Goatie’s.”

Jakes Hotel Treasure Beach, Jamaica

beautiful places in the caribbean

I can close my eyes and see the roads from Kingston — bumpy and winding — but worth the three-hour drive to reach this slice of solitude on Jamaica’s south coast. You won’t find high-rise hotels or crowds here. Upon arrival, it’s a straightaway to my home away from home at Jakes , a boutique hotel with seaside bungalows and villas spread about Treasure Beach’s rugged coastline. Spend a day at Jakes’s poolside bar, order a rum punch, and repeat. In the morning, have a filling breakfast of ackee and salt fish with fried plantain at the property’s restaurant. And, if you love to read like I do, come for the biannual Calabash International Literary Festival , a weekend that includes communing with some of the world’s greatest literary minds as they read from their work with lapping waves in the background.

Sheer Rocks, Antigua

Sheer Rocks

Located on a cliffside on Antigua’s west coast, this is dining with a view taken up a notch. “It doesn’t get much sexier than this waterfront restaurant at Cocobay Resort, where you can dine in cabanas built into the cliff’s edge and swim in ocean-view plunge pools between courses,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

Book your stay at Cocobay Resort Antigua - All Inclusive - Adults Only via Booking.com

Stush in the Bush, Jamaica

This plant-based, farm-to-table experience is offered in the hills of St. Ann, near Ocho Rios. Here, the flavours of Jamaica are presented as a love letter to the surrounding terrain that produces the food. Owners Chris and Lisa Binns seek to connect visitors to the earth at every turn, with a farm tour and rustic dinner of rotating dishes that have included a Jamaican mezze board of crispy plantain chips, coconut-crusted yams, and pineapple croquettes.

Wild Cow Run, Turks and Caicos

beautiful places in the caribbean

One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, Grace Bay in Providenciales sees its fair share of visitors — and for good reason: The white-sand beach rivals those seen in the Maldives.

But go beyond Provo and you’ll reach Middle Caicos, the largest of the islands in Turks and Caicos, with a wild beauty of its own. “Few visitors ever venture far enough to see this wild and wonderful beach, secreted at the southern tip of Middle Caicos, so I feel fortunate to have been introduced to it by a resident,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “Walk through the stand of casuarina trees shielding the beach from the road and you’ll be rewarded with quite a sight: two miles (3.21 km) of completely deserted, blinding-white sand that meets gin-clear water, knee-deep for almost a mile (1.6 km) out. If beach was a religion, this would be its cathedral.”

Jardin de Balata, Martinique

Jardin de Balata

Known for its world-class rums, Martinique has a slew of impressive beaches, too, from Le Diamant to Les Anses-d’Arlet. For a trip away from the island’s sandy shores, head to Jardin de Balata and learn why Martinique is called the “Island of Flowers.” At this thriving, three-hectare botanical garden just outside the capital of Fort-de-France, more than 3,000 varieties of flora and fauna bloom brightly. Take a canopy ride for panoramic views. And for cultural events, there’s Martinique’s three-day Carnival in February, where I’ve recently learned the crowd is entirely part of the parade in what’s called a vidé .

Grand Fond Natural Pools, St. Barts

beautiful places in the caribbean

On an island known for its exclusivity and luxury, visitors can opt for an adventure that only requires a good pair of walking shoes and a bathing suit. After a 30-minute walk along a winding path, you’ll reach two natural pools enclosed by craggy rocks jutting from the sea. If the waves are strong, it’s best to watch from a distance, but on a clear day, floating in the emerald-coloured water is simply magical.

Blue Hole, Jamaica

Jamaica

One of the most sought-after locations in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Hole are surrounded by vegetation and a hilly interior. “This is a series of natural limestone sinkholes and lush untouched forestry. I visited with my fiancé and a few of our closest friends. The view from the top of the tropical falls is stunning, and if you’re the adventurous type like me, jumping off a 30-foot cliff makes you feel like you can conquer anything afterwards,” says Holmes.

beautiful places in the caribbean

Nicknamed the “Nature Island,” Dominica is home to rain forests, bubbling rivers, ocean kayaking trails, and rushing waterfalls. A few of the island’s most beautiful natural wonders include Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Champagne Reef, and the Botanic Gardens. For an eco-friendly retreat, check into Coulibri Ridge , a 14-suite, off-the-grid luxury hotel that uses solar energy as its main power source and features an open-air yoga pavilion. For a black-sand beach escape, my favourite pick is Secret Bay , set on a secluded cliff with residential-style villas that have their own plunge pools. In February, the streets become filled with revellers for Dominica’s Mas Domnik Carnival celebration, which includes music competitions, a variety of parties, and masqueraders dressed in bright regalia.

Nayara bocas del toro, panama.

Panama

With 16 overwater villas, this adults-only eco-resort on a private island along the Caribbean coast does not disappoint. Flanked by three miles (4.82 km) of coral reefs teeming with sea life, snorkellers will have lots to explore at Nayara Bocas del Toro . Kayak, paddleboard, and swim directly from your room, but not before enjoying Caribbean breakfast classics like Johnny Cakes. Some villas here include glass floor panels for viewing underwater life, while two one-bedroom bamboo tree houses tower some 40 feet above the ground. The property also boasts the world’s first overwater beach, suspended on stilts and stretching 90 feet long by 20 feet wide.

Port of Spain, Trinidad

beautiful places in the caribbean

You’ve likely seen images of Trinidad’s Carnival — one of the greatest and most beautiful traditions in the Caribbean — but you may not know its origin, which is rooted in rebellion and celebration against all odds by enslaved West Africans. Today, Trinidad’s capital, Port of Spain, draws travellers from around the Caribbean, Europe, and even Japan to party into the early morning — rum in hand. My favourite moment of it all is J’ouvert — a call to meet the rising sun, bodies splashed in powder and paint — and Caesar’s Army’s A.M. Bush — a wild party that takes place in an open field. A word to the wise: Get tickets early, as Caesar’s Army events are always the most popular during Carnival. In 2024, the energy is sure to be as magnetic as ever.

Pigeon Point, Tobago

Pigeon point

Easily one of the most picturesque beaches in the Caribbean, Pigeon Point contains all the elements of a postcard-perfect day: sugary white sand, strikingly turquoise water, and palm trees swaying slowly above it all. Located on the southwestern tip of Tobago, it’s a popular place for sunbathing and water sports, without much foot traffic or noise.

Oil Nut Bay, Virgin Gorda

beautiful places in the caribbean

Tucked in the North Sound area of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, Oil Nut Bay is 400 acres of luxurious relaxation. Visitors here will find a beach club with three pools and a swim-up bar; Nova, an overwater restaurant; and hiking trails with views overlooking the Caribbean. One of the villas, Compass Rose , spans 3,653 square feet and features two swimming pools. Another way to see the British Virgin Islands? The Moorings offer chartered catamarans and yachts to various destinations around the region, including Virgin Gorda, the less-frequented coral island of Anegada, and Saba Rock.

Grenada

Nicknamed the Caribbean’s “Spice Isle” because of its abundance of cinnamon, nutmeg, and more, Grenada lures visitors with fewer crowds than neighbouring islands, beautiful Grand Anse Beach, the history of Jab Jab during Carnival season (when bodies are splashed in black oil and paint as a symbol of Black pride), and an addictive plate of crab back at BB’s . To take in the island’s beauty, drive up to Fort Frederick for a panoramic view. Want to learn more about the island? My favourite guide, Roger Augustine , provides the best tours on the island. When it’s time to find a hotel, my first choice is always the Black-owned Spice Island Beach Resort . Six Senses La Sagesse will also open in early 2024, stretching across 38 acres in the bucolic parish of St. David.

Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

Jade Mountain

Set between two beaches on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast, Jade Mountain offers views that seamlessly blend into its cliffside location above the Piton Mountains, plus rooms with 15-foot ceilings, infinity pools, and 24-hour butler service. Even from a distance while approaching by boat, it’s easily one of the most striking hotels in the Caribbean. Looking for a honeymoon location? This is it. It will be hard to leave your room, but if you do, the village of Soufrière, filled with great restaurants like Orlando’s and the island’s famous Sulphur Springs, is not far.

Book your stay at Jade Mountain via Booking.com

Yemaya Reefs, Little Corn Island

beautiful places in the caribbean

Past rows of mangroves and jungle, Yemaya Reefs on Little Corn Island reveals itself some 50 miles (80.46 km) off Nicaragua’s eastern coast. Step onto the sand and head to one of 16 individual casitas, some with plunge pools. Everything here is intimate, from the service to the communal yoga pavilion and thatched-roof restaurant. The food at Yemaya Reefs is particularly impressive, with dishes that celebrate Afro-Nicaraguan influences like gallo pinto (rice and beans) and rondón , a filling coconut-based stew with root vegetables and seafood like fish and crab. To get to Yemaya, you’ll need to take a 90-minute flight from the capital city of Managua, and then a 30-minute boat ride from Big Corn Island — all of which can be coordinated with the hotel.

Book your stay at Yemaya Reefs via Booking.com

Book your stay at Yemaya Reefs via Agoda.com

Pinel Island, St. Martin

Pinel Island

A tropical nature reserve located just off the coast of St. Martin, Pinel Island checks off all the boxes for a memorable beach day: soft white sand, beachfront restaurants , and a number of water activities. The best way to spend the day here? Grab a table or beach lounger at Karibuni and choose from dishes like octopus ceviche or a platter of conch boudin and codfish fritters. The ocean views are worth admission alone.

Book your stay at Karibuni via Booking.com

Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico

beautiful places in the caribbean

When I first visited Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra, I stood still for a few moments, knowing the short plane ride I feared was well worth this remote slice of beach in front of me. The horse-shaped bay with shallow turquoise waters can be reached via a 15-minute flight or a 1.5-hour ferry. Upon arriving, there are a number of food stalls to enjoy as well.

Ambergris Cay, Turks and Caicos

Ambergris Cay

This 1,100-acre private island is a place to get away from it all, with 17 bungalows, eight villas, and a collection of privately owned homes and luxury accommodations. You’ll share the place with sunbathing iguanas and, if you’re lucky, a few whales in the distance. My favourite rooms are the beachfront suites with private plunge pools and an unobstructed view between the front door and the ocean.

Shop the best travel experiences here

La Cabane, Barbados

If you’re looking for the perfect Caribbean afternoon, this is your place. It includes all the necessary elements: good rum and wine; a pristine, uncrowded beach; and, of course, easy vibes. La Cabane on Barbados’ west coast provides a St. Tropez-style beach club experience without any unnecessary frills. Walk barefoot and order a lobster. While you wait, take a dip in Batts Rock Beach just steps away, and don’t leave without a rum punch. Another favourite? Cutters. “I’ve frequented Barbados for the last five years consecutively to attend the Food and Rum Festival. I can say, without a doubt, the best experience I’ve had on the island is at Cutters . They make the best rum punch in the world, using the best ingredients, including freshly pressed sugar cane for their simple syrup” says Forte.

Guana Island, British Virgin Islands

beautiful places in the caribbean

Total seclusion is king on this private island in the British Virgin Islands. “There are private island resorts and then there’s Guana Island , a private island resort that’s so exclusive, non-guests can’t even swing by for a drink or dinner. The result? A luxe, low-key getaway that’s reliably tranquil, and whose seven beaches you’ll share with a maximum of 31 other (lucky) guests,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

Emara Estate, Turks and Caicos

Emara estate

For a gorgeous group getaway located on its own six acres, check into Emara Estate in Providenciales. One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, this 17-bedroom villa is tucked away on its own private peninsula, nestled between tropical trees. “It’s one of the most beautiful private villas I’ve been to — and it was also formerly owned by legendary musician Prince Rogers Nelson,” says Forte.

Piton Mountains, St. Lucia

beautiful places in the caribbean

Sprouting from the Caribbean Sea like a scene from Jurassic Park , these two volcanic plugs on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast leave me in awe every time I see them. While winding the hillsides of the country, the mountains peak out at various turns, but my favourite spot to view them is by boat or from the sand at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort . Afterwards, head to the town of Soufrière and have lunch at Fedo’s. (Tip: Don’t skip the fresh juice of the day.)

These destinations feature the powder-soft sands and turquoise waters that have earned the region its outstanding reputation. Grab your beach essentials and cast your vote below to help us determine next year's list.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

A popular vacation destination for families, the Bahamas is made up of 700 islands that cover 100,000 square miles of ocean. In short: There are numerous beaches to choose from. Two traveler favorites include Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island and Gold Rock Beach in Lucayan National Park (on Grand Bahama Island). Cable Beach in Nassau is both beautiful and easily accessible. For an even more unique experience, book a tour to the famous Pig Beach in Exuma to swim with the island's adorable potbellied inhabitants – and get photos that will last a lifetime.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Grace Bay Beach on Providenciales is one of those incredible Caribbean beaches where you'll discover crystal-clear water, powdery white sand and a colorful coral reef just waiting to be explored. There are also numerous restaurants, shopping plazas and hotels and resorts nearby. If Grace Bay Beach is too crowded for you to secure a beach umbrella, try Governor's Beach or Pillory Beach on Grand Turk instead. Another hidden gem is North Bay Beach, a beautiful white shore on secluded Salt Cay that offers plenty of space to stretch out and several snorkeling spots.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

These British isles have some of the world's most gorgeous beaches to hike on (the boulder-filled Baths), snorkel by (Smuggler's Cove), eat at (Cane Garden Bay) and party on (Great Harbour during Old Year's Night, aka New Year's Eve). This means there is an ideal stretch of sand for everyone, so feel free to plan your visits to these sandy shores based on your mood. When you need a break from the sand, hike one of Sage Mountain National Park's 12 trails or explore one of the hundreds of offshore shipwrecks on a snorkeling tour.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Anguilla's white sand beaches are legendary. Even though the island only stretches 16 miles, it is home to 33 picture-perfect beaches. Shoal Bay East is a popular option thanks to its convenient on-site water sports equipment rentals. But if you're hoping to avoid rubbing elbows with other tourists, head to Rendezvous Bay instead. Meads Bay is another highly regarded but uncrowded spot in a great location, and you'll likely find lots of available beach chairs to rent.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

If you're traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands, a visit to Magens Bay is a must. St. Thomas' most famous shore is too beautiful for words, but be prepared to share the scenery with dozens of fellow tourists. To avoid the crowds, head to quieter St. John, where you'll find secluded stretches of shoreline like Francis Bay and Europa Bay. Or, check out the protected shore in St. Croix's Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, which only permits visitors on Saturdays and Sundays between September and March (the beach is closed April through August for turtle nesting season).

beautiful caribbean places to visit

It's hard to top Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach: This crescent-shaped shoreline features white sand and calm waves that are nothing short of spectacular. Another great Grand Cayman option is Rum Point Beach on the island's north side, where you can mix with locals while sipping a tropical drink at the beachside bar. If you're headed to Grand Cayman's smaller sister islands, unwind at the remote Point of Sand on Little Cayman or eye the scenery at The Bluff on Cayman Brac.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Benefitting from being outside the hurricane belt, Aruba and its beaches welcome visitors with sunny skies, warm temperatures and beautiful scenery year-round. Start your trip by swimming in Palm Beach's calm waters, then head south to Eagle Beach to get your blood pumping while Jet Skiing or kayaking (water sports rental options abound). Manchebo Beach, located just south of Eagle Beach, offers a similar but less crowded experience. Looking for more adventure? Consider exploring Arikok National Park's caves or scuba diving the Antilla or Pedernales shipwrecks.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Comprising 32 islands, St. Vincent and the Grenadines is full of beautiful beaches. You've probably seen some of them already, as the area's sands were featured in the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. When you arrive, check out the Tobago Cays: These uninhabited islands in the Grenadines have some great beaches for swimming, sunbathing and snorkeling. If you aren't up for making arrangements to get to the cays, park yourself at Mayreau, an island where you'll find stunning shores like Salt Whistle Bay and Saline Bay.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Set along the west side of Barbados – an area known as the Platinum Coast – is a shoreline so gorgeous that the poshest hotels have all jockeyed for spots there. Noteworthy stretches of sand on this side of the island include Paynes Bay Beach, Brighton Beach and Brandons Beach. If you aren't resting your head at an all-inclusive resort , you'll have just as much fun at other top-notch shores, such as southern options like Carlisle Bay and Dover Beach.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

With 365 beaches across Antigua and Barbuda, chances are you won't have difficulty claiming a spot on the sand. Not only that but there's a shoreline for every type of beachgoer. Half Moon Bay offers a secluded feel thanks to its location away from cities and towns. The bay's versatile conditions are ideal for water sports ranging from snorkeling to windsurfing. Dickenson Bay is great for swimming and sunbathing, and Ffryes Beach is loved for its laid-back atmosphere.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

No island captures the culture of the Caribbean quite like Jamaica. You may come for the reggae music, Blue Mountain coffee and climbable waterfalls, but you'll stay for the sensational beaches . Seven Mile Beach in Negril will impress with its white sand and calm water, while Boston Bay Beach in Port Antonio is great for surfers seeking waves and sunshine. For a beach with abundant amenities, including water sports equipment rentals, check out the popular Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay. Keep in mind, though, that the beach charges a nominal entry fee.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

You will never find yourself bored in Grenada, thanks to the country's roster of 45-plus beaches. Grand Anse Beach is the main island's most famous shoreline, offering azure water, powdery sand and plenty of amenities (think: chair and umbrella rentals, restaurants, beach bars and more). For a more secluded experience, travel to Grenada's smaller islands, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Depending on when you visit, you may not have to share the sand with anyone at these less-frequented locales.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic is known for its vibrant culture, affordable all-inclusive resorts and numerous beaches. Playa Dorada (or Golden Beach) located on the country's Amber Coast, is one of the region's most popular shorelines. Here, travelers can enjoy some R&R or rent equipment for a day of water sports activities. Meanwhile, Key Paradise is an excellent place to admire various marine and coral life while snorkeling. For a quieter beach experience, try Cofresi Beach, where you can enjoy one of the several restaurants nearby or spend a day at the adjacent Ocean World Adventure Park.

beautiful caribbean places to visit

These tiny twin islands offer plenty of rewards for those willing to make the trek. Striking shorelines abound, including the honey-tinted sands of Oualie Beach and Pinney's Beach on the island of Nevis. Meanwhile, St. Kitts is where you'll find Banana Bay, which provides great views of neighboring Nevis. Bustling Frigate Bay, also on St. Kitts, offers waves ideal for surfing and windsurfing, and proximity to plenty of hotels and nightlife venues.

18 Places In Florida That Feel Like The Caribbean

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

beautiful caribbean places to visit

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

25 Places to Visit in Moscow

Do you know what the most populous city in Europe is? Most people wouldn’t guess that it is actually Moscow. There are approximately 13 million people in the Moscow metro area, which amounts to approximately 1/10th of all Russians.

This former capitol of the Soviet Union is still the political and financial center of Russia. Just because it is a current business and government city, in no way means that it is boring and not worth a visit. Assuming the political tensions get solved, Moscow is a fascinating city you need to visit.

While lots of people can’t explain the nuances of Russian architecture, most can spot and appreciate it immediately. One of the best ways to see the historic sites is by taking a boat tour down the Moskva River that meanders through the city.

Overall, navigating the city isn’t difficult as there is phenomenal and cheap public transportation (roughly 30 rubles/35 cents per ride). You can also use a cheap Uber on the three ring roads that circle the city at various distances from the center.

Still wondering why you should visit this historic masterpiece of a city? Read on to see the top 25 things you need to see in Moscow.

The House with Animals

The animal house in Moscow Russia

This former church is famous for the terracotta reliefs of animals that adorn the front of the building. It is a favorite of locals, and famous around the world. It was built in approximately 1900.

Resurrection Gate or Iberian Gate and Chapel

The resurrection gate at the entrance to Red square.

The Resurrection Gate is now one of the most common ways to enter Red Square. This gate is also the only standing part of the wall that was the entrance to to Kitai-Gorod, or Moscow’s historic central business district.

St. Basils Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow Russia.

Probably the most famous of the Red Square attractions is St. Basil’s Cathedral. I don’t know if the legend is true or not, but supposedly Tsar Ivan IV poked the eyes of the architect out after completing it so nothing as pretty could be made again. What an awful boss!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

Machines in Museum of Soviet arcade machines

This is one of the most unique things to do in Moscow. If you know that many American video games paint the Russians as the bad guys, then it’s probably not surprising to learn that you can find an entirely different variety of video games in Russia. This isn’t a recent phenomenon; even historically the video games were different. If you are a video game buff then this stop is for you!

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot near Kubinka

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot

This church attempts to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as Russian military leader. Yes, it’s an awkward amalgamation. It caused quite a controversy when there were plans to create murals of Vladimir Putin and Joseph Stalin to go along with the ones of Jesus Christ (those plans were scrapped).

Bunker 42 (Cold War Museum)

This cathedral is located in Zaryadye Park (adjacent to Red Square). It is also on the Moskva River. The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign” previously was a monastery.

Komsomolskaya Metro station

Komsomolskaya Metro station in Moscow.

So many of the metro stations are breathtaking works of art. The idea was to create something beautiful that all the regular people could enjoy, or if you are more cynical you could say it was to attempt to show off how well they were doing.

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Stree t

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street Moscow

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street look super cool and futuristic, except like many communist projects didn’t actually work that well. They were supposed to be something new and different from the standard “Soviet Blocks.”

There are a number of problems with this design. Supposedly the acoustics are awful making the apartments perpetually noisy. The inner circle becomes a wind chamber even when it’s not that windy. My favorite weakness is that the trapezoid shape of apartments is hard to decorate and even harder to do maintenance on.

Izmailovo District and Izmailovo Kremlin

Izmailovo Kremlin In The Center Of

This area has to be one of the coolest places to visit in Moscow. It features a park in the middle of Moscow that is over 3x the size of New York City’s Central Park. The Kremlin in Izmailovo is a complex located in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow that is known as the center of culture and entertainment. The wooden buildings are in Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries (not original).

Tretyakov Gallery

retyakov State Gallery In Moscow

For those that appreciate fine art this is where you have to go. The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia is the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. The museum previously hosted worldwide chess tournaments (I can’t help be think of the Queen’s Gambit).

Book your tickets in advance here. Tickets cost about $13 per person.

Kolomenskoe Estate

Kolomenskoe Estate in Moscow Russia

This reconstruction of a former royal estate is just a few miles southeast of the Moscow city center. Supposedly really detailed historical plans survived, so the reconstruction and current museum is incredibly authentic. It was completed in 2010.

Old buildings of Arbat

Old buildings of Arbat Moscow Russia

Arbat is an old street, and was previously the “nicest place to live in Moscow. Even though it fell into disrepair, it’s location, it’s historical buildings, and the fact that it is a pedestrian street are quickly making it a top place to live again.

The Melnikov House

Famous house of architect Melnikov on Arbat street in Moscow Russia

Located on Arbat street, the Famous house of architect Melnikov designed this house (and Lenin’s sarcophagus). Melnikov designed it at a time when private ownership was outlawed, but got around this restriction by saying it was an experimental design to maximize space. Even though others weren’t built, he was able to keep it.

The New Maiden Convent

The New Maiden Convent, built was built to resemble a mini-Kremlin. It stands out to me because this “convent” was the place where women who were no longer welcome in the royal court were banished to.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark.

The Americans may have made it to the moon first, but the Russian cosmonauts were first in a number of other achievements. This gigantic obelisk pays homage to their accomplishments.

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve

beautiful caribbean places to visit

This royal estate was founded by Catherine the Great. She was Russia’s longest serving female leader. It is now a gorgeous museum!

Stalinist Skyscraper tour

Stalinist Skyscrapers called The Seven Sisters

This group of seven skyscrapers are called the Seven Sisters. They were all made in the Stalinist style, and one was previously the tallest building in Europe. If you want to tour them all while learning about their history book here .

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow

It’s ironic that a country that was so anti-religion for so long has so many great churches. The Cathedral for Christ the Savior was made to thank Jesus for saving Russia. If you are interested in visiting this and so many other cathedrals in Moscow I recommend this tour that will take you to The Cathedral of Christ the Savior many other popular churches in Moscow.

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Red Square Moscow

This church on Red Square is reconstruction of what was previously there but ordered to be destroy by Joseph Stalin. It is a travesty thinking of all the beautiful things that Stalin destroyed to attempt to implement his vision.

Zaryade Park

glass dome in Zaryadye Park in Moscow

Zaryadye Park is one of the main tourist attractions in Moscow. It is located directly next to the Kremlin, and offers truly amazing views. It is also famous for its “floating bridge” and the fact that there are so many unique features underneath it.

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya church

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Dubrovitsy), or The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God is located in a village amed Dubrovitsy about 20 miles south of Moscow. It is another Russian Orthodox church, but what makes this one unique is that we aren’t 100% sure who made it, or why is has a style that is completely different than other churches of the time.

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker on Bersenevka in Moscow.

I love the unique style of the Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow. The golden onion domes stand out across the globe. This church dates back to 1657, though it has been partially destroyed a few times since then.

Moscow University

Moscow University in Russia

Moscow University is one of the Seven Sisters that are the “Stalin Skyscrapers.” Previously it was the tallest building in Europe. Though it has lost that title, it is still the tallest “educational building” in the world.

So what do you think? Next trip to Moscow?
