Northern Ontario’s Fall Colours & Superior Region by Road & Rail

Roundtrip from Winnipeg - 6 days - 5 nights group tour.

Tour Dates to be determined - please call to discuss.

Rail Travel Tours can take you to view the fantastic scenery and the fall colours of Ontario’s Superior region on a tour offered nowhere else. We travel roundtrip from Winnipeg by motorcoach to enjoy the fall colours of the North Shore of Lake Superior and both daytime scenic rail journeys in the region.   The tour also includes stays, every night in hotel rooms for maximum daylight fall colours viewing, bush plane and boat museums.  The Agawa Canyon Tour Train from Sault Ste Marie is a world-renowned rail journey for its fall colours scenery and features time to visit the Agawa Canyon Park and we have reserved what plans to be the peak of the fall colours.  We will also visit the Greater City of Sudbury to learn about the heritage of this mining region, a visit just for our group to R & R Restored Cars, and enjoy the hospitality of the Northern Ontario RR Museum. The tour also allows guests to travel on VIA Rail's SUDBURY - isolated rail service to travel through the picturesque and rugged Superior Region to White River, Past guests on our tour tours, from this train, have seen moose in the swamps, bears in the woods and forests full of colour. The trip back to Winnipeg by motor coach offers an opportunity to enjoy more views of the North Shore of Lake Superior.  Bring your camera and a sense of adventure as the fall colours and northern hospitality await you.

What the tour includes:

DAY 1 – We head east from Winnipeg by road to enjoy the colours of NW Ontario

The tour will start with a morning departure from Winnipeg by motorcoach heading east toward Ontario.  We will stop in Ignace, Ontario to visit their community museum and enjoy lunch here, and stretch our legs in their heritage park, before continuing east to enjoy more views of the changing foliage.  Arriving in Thunder Bay, we have a planned visit to see the former Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker Museum ship the Alexander Henry moored on the Lake Superior harbourfront.  After the tour, we will check into the classic railway hotel, The Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel (those that book early will get rooms overlooking Lake Superior to enjoy), have dinner, and then enjoy the hotel’s pool or hot tub or nearby attractions (including the nearby Thunder Bay Casino) and overnight here.   Included meals today: lunch & dinner.

DAY 2 – Enjoy more fall colours along the North Shore of Lake Superior

Today, after breakfast at our hotel, we will enjoy the fall colours around the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior from the windows of our motorcoach and a few stops along the way. One stop will be at the Winnie the Pooh Park where we will have lunch and enjoy the displays and Disney approved statue of presumably the most popular bear cub in the world.  Arriving Sault Ste. Marie, we have scheduled a visit to the fantastic Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre to view their large collection of aircraft and WILDFIRES 3-D presentation in their interactive theatre on fighting forest fires from the air. Following this we will check into our hotel and enjoying some free time for guests to have dinner at their own pace at a location near the hotel (or order in) and overnight here.   Included meals today: Breakfast & lunch.

DAY 3 – All Aboard for the Agawa Canyon rail journey

The inclusive hotel breakfast will be enjoyed early this morning so we have time to see Canada’s newest train station, here in Sault St Marie, before boarding the Agawa Canyon Tour train for its morning departure.  This popular scenic 114 mile day trip features fantastic views from high trestles, lakes and rugged wilderness terrain is rated one of the top rail journeys in North America.  We will enjoy lunch and stretch our legs in the Agawa Canyon Park where Group of Seven paintings seem to come alive in every direction you look.  Returning to Sault Ste. Marie, to again enjoy the fall colours from this train, we return to our hotel for guest to enjoy the remainder of the day on their own and again overnight in Sault Ste. Marie. Included meals today: Breakfast & lunch.

DAY 4 – On our way to and visiting Sudbury

After breakfast at our hotel this morning we will transfer to the City of Sudbury for an afternoon visit to this large city amidst its rugged surroundings of the Canadian Shield.  Here we will learn about some of the area’s mining heritage and a planned visit to the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre. Guests will also enjoy a home cooked dinner at the end our day touring here before overnighting in downtown Sudbury at our hotel that overlooks the city skyline.   Included meals today: breakfast & dinner.

DAY 5 – More fall colours views as we ride one of Canada’s most unique passenger train

After breakfast at the hotel we will enjoy the all-daylight train trip on VIA Rail’s unique Rail Diesel Car service. This lesser known and equally scenic rail journey from Sudbury, travels the route of the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline through remote and pristine Canadian Shield wilderness (passing Onaping Falls, fur trade river routes; isolated lakes and more) for our guests to enjoy the fall colours on the last operating train of this type in Canada.   Arriving in White River, at the same platform where a bear cub named Winnipeg (Winnie for short) was purchased by Captain Harry Colebourn, we will visit their museum and learn about the origins of this famous bear cub before enjoying supper and overnight here. Included meals today: breakfast & dinner.

DAY 6 – More fall colours views of Lake Superior’s North Shore & return to Winnipeg

Today will be our final travel day with more great views around the North Shore of Lake Superior and Northwestern Ontario. We also plan to stop to see the stunning Terry Fox Monument that overlooks Thunder Bay & Lake Superior.  Our westward journey today will end back in Winnipeg, in the late afternoon, with great memories and lots of pictures to show family and friends. Included meals today: breakfast & lunch.

COVID-19 Travel UpDATE – KEEPING YOU INFORMED

Travel to CHURCHILL

How to get to churchill.

There are no roads connecting Churchill to the rest of Manitoba which means the only ways to reach our SubArctic town are by train or by plane.

The train departs from Winnipeg three times a week on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays arriving approximately 48 hours later on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The same train departs Churchill at 7:30pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

If you have the means, we strongly suggest adding a fun little side trip by driving to Thompson and stopping off at Steep Rock, Little Limestone Lake and Pisew Falls before jumping on the train in Thompson and taking the overnighter to Churchill. Trains depart from Thompson at 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Book your tickets in advance at www.viarail.ca/

There’s no question flying to Churchill is a quicker method. Currently Calm Air is the only airline to service Churchill with flights departing from Winnipeg. Visit www.calmair.com/ to book your flights or inquire about our multi day packages that include a corporate rate on airfare.

Please note travel to Churchill can often be challenging for a variety of reasons. If you have a connecting flight or other commitments, we strongly recommend giving yourself an extra travel day in case of delays.

WHERE TO STAY IN CHURCHILL

There are a variety of hotels, guesthouses and bed & breakfasts in town. Accommodation can fill up quickly, especially in Polar Bear Season. For a complete list of accommodation options please visit www.churchill.ca/p/places-to-stay

*Inquire about our preferred partners and discounted rates.

WHERE TO EAT IN CHURCHILL

Dining options in Churchill are fairly limited and all within walking distance of accommodations in town. The Tundra Inn, Lazy Bear Lodge, Seaport Hotel and Restaurant and Dancing Bear all provide a North American style menu. During Polar Bear season reservations are often recommended and always appreciated.

Your questions answered.

Find out what is included in your trip and have all your questions answered. We are here to help.

What’s Included

Frequently asked questions, is a polar bear sighting guaranteed.

The polar bear migration is a special occasion, and it offers visitors a high probability of seeing the bears in the wild. Our specialized tour operators know the landscape extremely well, and will take you to places where bears are commonly spotted. There is no guarantee of a sighting, however.

What is the best time to see polar bears?

The best time to see polar bears is in October and November, during the annual fall migration. The polar bears congregate on the shore of Hudson Bay near Churchill waiting for the water to freeze so the annual seal hunt can begin.

What else can I do on a polar bear trip?

When you’re not out looking for polar bears there are opportunities to learn about northern Manitoba’s Indigenous culture, history and wildlife by visiting the Itsanitaq Museum, the Parks Canada Interpretive Centre and joining evening talks with a local expert. There’s also a chance to go dogsledding.

What is the VIA Rail experience like?

VIA Rail is Canada’s national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.

Where do I sleep on the train and what are the features of Sleeper Plus Class?

This trip itinerary features a private cabin in Sleeper Plus Class on VIA Rail's The Canadian train. Each cabin features comfortable seating that converts to a bed. Cabins include a sink and toilet and access to a shared shower.

In Sleeper Plus Class, you’ll also enjoy gourmet meals in the dining car and access to the train's viewing cars, where you can watch the passing scenery and meet fellow travellers. Complimentary tea, coffee and snacks are available throughout your journey. Alcoholic beverages are not included but are available for purchase.

Is there a dining car on the Canadian Train?

Yes. Sleeper Plus Class and Prestige Class passengers have access to the dining car, which serves three chef-prepared meals daily. In Economy Class, passengers have access to meals, snacks and a variety of beverages served by train attendants. For Economy Class passengers, the Canadian Train cost doesn't include meals or snacks.

Most dietary requirements, food allergies, and other requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.

What are the expected weather conditions and what clothing is recommended for this polar bear trip?

During the fall season, temperatures in Winnipeg can vary from -6 degrees C to 11 degrees C (21 degrees F to 51 degrees F). Temperatures in Churchill can vary from -13 degrees C to -2 degrees C (9 degrees F to 29 degrees F). The Tundra Buggies are heated, but it is best to wear warm layers throughout the trip.

We recommend bringing a warm winter coat, snow pants, thick socks, gloves, hat, and other insulated layers. Winter clothing rentals are available if you do not own the appropriate gear. These would be an additional cost and subject to availability. For more information, please speak to your Vacation Advisor.

What level of physical activity is required for polar bear viewing?

Most of the polar bear viewing is operated from the Tundra Buggy, so is suitable for guests who are less active. To access the Tundra Buggy, you will need to go up 12 steps. For other activity details, please see the full trip itinerary or speak to one of our Vacation Advisors.
