Viking Mekong River cruise(Vietnam and Cambodia)
Having taken a great cruise with Viking on the Rhine River (Germany,) we looked forward to this trip to Southeast Asia, and indeed, some aspects were above expectations: This trip to Vietnam and Cambodia was filled with lectures and professional guidance, made easy by the QuietBox that everyone uses so we can hear the guidance even from a hundred feet away.... We got a deep understanding of the political, social, cultural, economic , historical and religious aspects of these two countries, and gained a deeper respect for the tragedies that have been plaguing these two nations for a very long time. The guides and crew on the ship were friendly, professional and attentive to every need and whim. The major issue we had is with the boat. When we booked, (directly by calling the company) we were clearly told that the ship was smaller than the one used in Europe, more like a Mississippi River boat, so it wasn't a surprise. Yet, living in the tight stateroom for a week was challenging. The boat has one dining room and a deck with many lounge chairs for all and an air-conditioned with a bar room. But overall it offers no more than transportation from place to place in less than ideal conditions. We checked the suites--only two on the ship, booked a couple of years in advance. The guests pointed out that the additional space where in the photo it showed with a sitting area, was devoid of furniture. The bathroom was identical to the regular cabin very tight bathroom, so it doesn't seem to be worth the extra cost. Please note that in the brochure, Viking doesn't make it clear that a 14-day cruise actually includes 3-4 days on land in either side of the one-week on the river. That's OK because of the geography, and we were glad to be introduced to all these other places, yet involved moving around and unpacking.... (This is different, for example, from a river trip in Russia, where the guests live on the boat both in Moscow and St. Petersberg.)
We booked a Viking cruise in August 2018 for April 2020 and paid our $1000 deposit. We had taken 2 previous cruises with Viking and knew they asked for full payment before booking airline tickets. Perfectly fine. However, we were aghast when we received and email telling us we needed to pay all $10,000 by the end of this year, 2018, for a cruise that didn’t occur until 2020!! This is our last Viking cruise.
We thoroughly enjoyed our early December Mediterranean Cruise on the Viking Sky. This elegant ship carries 940 passengers and a crew of 450 welcoming and friendly staff. Boarding was a breeze, about 6 people in line ahead of me - instead of the usuals chaos at Celebrity and Princess. The meals were wonderful and plentiful, especially the specialty restaurants- Manfredi”s and the Chefs’ Table. Even the buffet at breakfast and lunches were exceptional. Every waiter, officer, bartender, chef, cabin attendant and other staff greeted you pleasantly. Viking offered a choice of free excursions at each port. We booked several excursions at every port. We toured the spa, pools and the shops, although we were so busy we didn’t have time to get wet. We did attend high tea one afternoon. Every excursion started on spotless buses and each were well organized. Our favorite excursion was the wine tasting to the Petti Winery, where we tasted all 6 wines and participated in making Foccacia bread pizzas with local tomatoes, garlic, salami and mozzarella cheeses. This was my 13th Cruise and wife’s 15th, and this Viking Cruise was extraordinary beyond comparison to celebrity, Princess or Royal Caribbean! Viking spoiled us so much we may be disappointed with Princess in the Spring. Even the luggage and disembark was well organized. My hat is off to Viking!!! We’ll definitely be back!!!
The Viking Mekong Cruise was the most incredible experience ever. Very different from the two other Viking cruises we took but one that should not be missed. Out tour guide, Lee, was the most hard working person we’ve ever come across. From five star hotels, to the Mekong ship, to visiting local villages and families, to exploring the temples and monuments, to learning up close and personal the history of these two countries, it was wonderful.
We booked the Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest for mid-October. A few days before our departure, we were advised that water levels were low and we "might" need to travel by bus to our ship. What an understatement!!! We had to travel by bus from Amsterdam to Mainz via bus, w/ a very short stop & VERY late lunch in Cologne--no time to explore. BUT, that was only after our small group had been left to stand on the streets of Amsterdam for 45 minutes since a bus had not been arranged for us! The next day, more bussing to take a small boat cruise to see the Rhine castles--BUT, the entire group waited in the chilly mist for 60 min for the small boat (lunch aboard was HORRIBLE, consisting of a dried chicken breast w/ gravy & French Fries---not Viking quality!). This was the first few days & then, we had a 6 hr bus ride to change ships mid-cruise! Aboard the Modi, the service was horrible. Complaints to Viking resulted in a 25% refund, but it would have been nice to have been given the option of re-booking before the trip since Viking had known since May that water levels were low. This was my husband's 1st cruise ever & will probably be his last! A VERY expensive trip for bussing around Europe...
My husband, two of our friends and I booked a 23-day Viking cruise from Bucharest to Amsterdam beginning on October 19. A couple of days before we left, we got an email from Viking warning us that there might be a problem between Passau and Regensburg because of low water in the rivers. What we did not know until after our trip had started was that Viking had not made that cruise since May! As a result, we were transferred to 4 different boats and saw Europe mostly by bus! Our long-awaited and very expensive cruise was a disaster that included constant packing and unpacking to move from boat to boat. So much for unpack once and relax and enjoy the trip. Not only that, our visits to most towns were either cut short or involved very long and tedious bus rides. With a couple of exceptions, we did not dock anywhere near the towns and cities we were visiting. Instead, we were docked in industrial areas or other unattractive sites where we couldn't leave the boat to see anything. Every other excursion required hours of bus rides and hastily pulled together walking tours with no free time to enjoy the towns. We were supposed to have time in Budapest with an early arrival offering a tour of the city and the next full day on our own. But instead we were bused a couple of hours out of Budapest to dock in another unpleasant and isolated area. Later that day, it was announced that due to rain in the Black Forest that day, we could go back to Budapest by boat, which we did. We traveled all night and got into the city early that morning. We had to cancel several things that we had previously booked but did get to go to the market and the New York Cafe for lunch. The rest of the trip involved bus travel. In being transferred to Cologne, we had a three-hour bus ride with no comfort stops. By the time we got there, our party stopped at a coffee shop to use the facilities and get some coffee. Our time in Cologne (supposed to be all day and into the evening) was about 3 hours. We were then taken to the winter harbor for river cruise ships where we picked up our final vessel. Again, we were stuck in an industrial area with no chance to see anything! We are all seasoned travelers and have been on at least a dozen river cruises. We understand the difficulties with having to deal with low or high water. What we don't understand and cannot forgive is Viking's failure to let us know that the trip was impossible from the beginning and that they knew this to be the case since May, some 5 months before we embarked on the worst vacation of our lives. The generous compensation for all of the misery and inconveniences we suffered was to offer a credit toward another Viking cruise! As if we will ever trust Viking again! My husband and I spent more than $22,000 for this trip and we deserved better treatment! There were many non-river depth issues as well which I would be happy to go into if someone is interested. I must say, however, that the crew on all of our ships was excellent! Professional, friendly, and eager to help. If it had not been for them, Viking might have had a full-blown mutiny on their hands!
We regret to hear of your disappointment, Diane, and in an effort to address your concerns and continue this conversation, we welcome you to contact us directly with your booking details. We look forward to further discussing your experience, and thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

VIKING RIVER CRUISES 15 Days | Magnificent Mekong Southbound
HANOI TO HO CHI MINH CITY Day 1 | Hanoi, Vietnam. Fly to Hanoi, former capital of French Indochina, then transfer to your hotel. Check in for a 2-night stay, then relax or take a walk to stretch your legs and begin getting acquainted with the city. Day 2 | Hanoi. After breakfast, take a tour of this unique, thousand-year-old Asian capital where old and new combine in a lush setting of parks and lakes. Pass by the scenic Sword Lake on your way to the vast Ho Chi Minh Memorial, a complex dedicated to Vietnam’s 20th-century Communist leader. Then, spend some time in the excellent Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, where you learn about the cultural heritage of this multicultural country’s 50+ ethnic groups. Later, tour the notorious “Hanoi Hilton,” the facility where American POWs were held captive during the Vietnam War. Relax this afternoon before dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D) Day 3 | Hanoi. Siem Reap, Cambodia. This morning, check out of your hotel and proceed to Hanoi’s Temple of Literature. Founded in 1070 as Vietnam’s first university, this mazelike compound features inviting courtyards, gateways, pavilions, walkways, lakes and a museum. Tour the facility and spend some free time enjoying attractions such as the Tortoise Steles, Sage Courtyard, Well of Heavenly Clarity, Lake of Literature and Constellation of Literature Pavilion. This afternoon, take a short afternoon flight to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Check in to your hotel for a 3-night stay; tonight’s dinner is accompanied by a traditional Apsara dance show. (B, D) Day 4 | Angkor Wat. Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archeological sites in the world. Begin your day with a visit to one of Angkor’s largest Khmer temples, Angkor Wat, built for King Suryavarman II in the 12th century A.D. With its beautiful proportions and extensive, intricate bas-relief stone carvings, it is one of the most spectacular sights in Southeast Asia. Spend some time exploring the fortified city of Angkor Thom, which houses several of Angkor’s most popular sights such as the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper Kings with their dramatic bas reliefs. Today you also visit the mysterious Bayon Temple, known for its giant, stone carved faces with their enigmatic smiles. Dine at a local restaurant and relax this evening. (B, D) Day 5 | Angkor Wat. Siem Reap. Today, continue your exploration of the temple ruins left behind by the mighty Khmer Empire, which ruled Cambodia from the early 9th century for some 400 years. Its founder, King Jayavarman II, was a contemporary of Charlemagne, and his dreams of empire were equally grandiose. At its zenith, the Khmer Empire covered most of the Indochinese Peninsula. Ride to the spectacular 10th-century Hindu temple Banteay Srey (“Citadel of Women”) to see magnificent carvings of Shiva and Vishnu. Then, journey to Ta Prohm, one of the most popular of the temples of Angkor. Unlike many other buildings, it has been largely left intact as it was when discovered, with trees and large shrubs growing over the ruins. Return to Siem Reap this afternoon and learn how local crafts are alive and well in the modern-day city. Visit a vocational center that trains 650 young apprentices every year in the traditional crafts of stone sculpture, wood carving and painting; then take a guided tour through Artisans d’Angkor, a network of studios for the newly trained craftspeople. Mingle with the locals at some of Siem Reap’s open air markets or just relax before your final dinner in Siem Reap. (B, D) Day 6 | Kampong Thom. Kampong Cham. After breakfast, check out of your Siem Reap hotel. A coach tour through the Cambodian countryside brings you to your ship in Kampong Cham, via the provincial capital of Kampong Thom. Due to its central location, this area is rapidly becoming an important hub for fishing and agriculture; it also has a rich archeological heritage, to which the 200 temples—some of which predate the Khmer empire—attest. This afternoon, board your ship; after you get settled in, meet the ship’s officers over a welcome cocktail. (B, L, D) Day 7 | Kampong Cham. You will visit the hilltop temple of Wat Hanchey this morning, which affords stunning views of the Mekong River. The temple itself dates back to the 8th century and it is surrounded by smaller religious monuments dotting the hillsides. After lunch, visit the twin holy mountains of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srey with their many temples and pagodas, still used during traditional Khmer festivals. Continue to the ecotourism village of Choeungkok, supported by the French–Cambodian Amica organization. (B, L, D) Day 8 | Phnom Penh. Dock along the lovely waterfront of Cambodia’s capital and explore the city in style, in a cyclo. This mode of transportation provides many Cambodians with a source of income and visitors with a speedy and enjoyable way to move around. See the magnificent Royal Palace with its spectacular Silver Pagoda, built in the 19th century by the French but inspired by the centuries-old architecture of the Khmer. This afternoon, join an excursion to the sobering memorial in the Tuol Sleng detention center, a former high school in which thousands of victims of the murderous Khmer Rouge regime died, and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, or explore the city’s maze of small alleys, markets and busy streets on your own if you prefer. Tonight’s dinner is accompanied by a folkloric performance. (B, L, D) Day 9 | Phnom Penh. After breakfast, take a tour of the National Museum of Cambodia, which houses treasures of Khmer art and craftsmanship and also displays art that predates the mighty empire. After your museum visit, continue to the beautifully preserved 14th-century Buddhist temple of Wat Phnom, with more modern murals inside and a sanctuary dedicated to Lady Penh, said to be the founder of this temple. Take some free time for exploration or shopping before returning to your ship for lunch. This afternoon there will be a presentation on board including a lecture on Cambodia’s history and culture and a film about the life of Pol Pot, leader of the infamous Khmer Rouge—or you are free to explore Phnom Penh’s historic riverfront area, with its restaurants, art galleries and silk shops, or perhaps visit the distinctive Central Market or the “Russian Market” where you can buy jewelry, curios, clothes and souvenirs. You might prefer to visit more of the city’s wats—Wat Langka, Wat Botum, Wat Koh or Wat Ounalom—each with its own special character and purpose. Dinner is served on board. (B, L, D) Day 10 | Mekong River Scenic Cruising. Sail down the Mekong, one of the world’s great rivers, toward the Vietnamese border. The Mekong is truly the Mother River of Southeast Asia, sustaining civilizations through the centuries. Pass by some of the Mekong rice fields—the Khmer empire was founded on a rice surplus and rice is still the main staple of Vietnamese cuisine. (B, L, D) Day 11 | Châu Ðôc, Vietnam. Cu Lao Gien. Begin your morning with a tour of the busy riverside port of Châu Ðôc riding a trishaw. Afterwards, board a small boat to visit a Cham tribal village. Descended from an ancient Malay-Polynesian empire that arrived in Southeast Asia during the 1st and 2nd centuries B.C., the Champa people competed with the Khmer for dominance of the area. Observe village life and visit a catfish farm. In the afternoon, visit Cu Lao Gien Island where you see the monastery of St. Paul of Chartres, built in 1875 and later known as “la Providence.” Once a thriving mission with an orphanage, a hospital to treat leprosy victims, a school and a hospice, it serves today as a retreat for some 180 retired nuns. This evening, enjoy a screening of the film l’Amant (the Lover) which will prepare you for tomorrow’s visit to Sa Dec. (B, L, D) Day 12 | Sa Dec. Cái Bè. In Sa Dec, you will see the house of Mr. Huynh Thuy Le, the protagonist in Marguerite Duras’s beloved autobiographical novel, l’Amant (The Lover). Duras, who grew up in what was then French Indochina, is one of France’s best-selling authors. Later today, board a sampan boat to explore the backwaters and canals of the Delta. Small factories line the river channels here; see local workers producing rice noodles, coconut candy and a host of other handmade products. Then, visit the colorful floating market of Cái Bè. This evening, attend an onboard screening of the 2002 film The Quiet American, based on Graham Greene’s novel set in 1952 Saigon. (B, L, D) Day 13 | My Tho, Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City. Bid farewell to your ship this morning as your cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam comes to an end. Disembark in My Tho, a busy river port not far from the capital of Southern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. Upon arrival, take a tour of Reunification Palace—the site of South Vietnam’s defeat. See the Central Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral. After your tour, check in to your hotel for a 2-night stay, then spend the rest of the day at leisure, getting acquainted with this lively city at your own pace—see some of the historic French colonial architecture and soak up some of the city’s youthful energy. Tonight’s dinner is in a local restaurant. (B, D) Day 14 | Ho Chi Minh City. After breakfast, begin another tour of this bustling metropolis with a visit to its historic center. Take a stroll along Dong Khoi Street, the main shopping boulevard in the old colonial heart. See the grand city hall, the old opera house with its soaring arched entryway, the Chinatown area and a Lacquer Factory. Complete your morning tour at Ben Thành Market. This afternoon, get a different perspective on modern-day Vietnam at the War Remnants Museum, which provides a stark picture of the Vietnam War from a decidedly partisan point of view. The rest of your afternoon is free for exploring the city’s neighborhoods or doing a bit of last-minute shopping at the local markets before this evening’s festive final dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D) Day 15 | Ho Chi Minh City. After breakfast, check out of your hotel and proceed to the airport for your return flight. Or, continue your Southeast Asia adventure with a 3-night stay in Bangkok, Thailand’s astounding capital. (B) NOTE: Itinerary is subject to change without notice. Vietnam and Cambodia River Cruises - Viking River Cruises
Viking river cruises along the Mekong River offer a chance to leave what you know and become immersed in the scenery and cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia. Viking River Cruises’s Mekong River voyages are some of their most remarkable itineraries with the chance to stay in Hanoi, enjoy a flight to Siem Reap and a ride through Cambodia's countryside before finally boarding your elegant Viking river ship to continue your Vietnam and Cambodia river cruise experience.
Hanoi offers cruisers a glimpse into the past. In the old town you can walk on streets filled with specialized vendors selling goods according to their street name. For instance, shoes would be sold on Shoe Street. This is also where the city hosts a market on weekend evenings. You will also see many remnants of Vietnam's time under French control, as Hanoi was the capital of what was then called French Indochina. The beautiful Palace of the Governor - General of French Indochina is located here.
Angkor Wat is one of the region’s biggest must-see sites, literally. This amazing temple structure includes giant stone carvings and beautiful buildings constructed in the 12th century. The temple complex of Angkor Wat has remained surprisingly intact after all these centuries. Originally built as a Hindu temple structure, it was converted to Buddhist traditions in the 13th century.
Viking River Cruises on the Mekong will be aboard the Viking Mekong, specifically made to traverse its namesake river. This ship was built in 2012 and offers an inviting atmosphere where you will be able to unwind and take a break from the jungle climate. You will have lots of dining options onboard, including many of the local dishes. You will also be treated to lectures and talks on the Khmer Empire and the Champa people, along with a few light language lessons. Continue below for a few more ideas of the experiences available on a Mekong River cruise with Viking River Cruises:
- Explore Hanoi’s Temple of Literature on foot to best appreciate the beautiful pavilions, pagodas, courtyards and landscaped grounds of Vietnam’s first university.

- Marvel in the wonder of the sprawling temple complex of Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Siem Reap, Cambodia. View Khmer temples, intricate stone carvings and beautiful ancient terraces.
- Learn about Cambodia’s cherished silk-weaving history in Kampong Cham, where you can tour a local village to learn the history of the craft and feel the soft silk for yourself.

Viking Saigon Itineraries
Viking saigon review, review of viking saigon.
The 2021-built/2022-inaugurated RV Viking Saigon ship cruises on Mekong River (in Vietnam and Cambodia) departing from homeports Saigon Vietnam and Kampong Cham Cambodia (bus travel to Siem Reap , flight to Hanoi ).
Viking Saigon is a modern-designed and handcrafted vessel designed to safely navigate the Lower Mekong River. Viking Saigon's fleetmate deployed in the Cambodia-Vietnam region is the 2002-built Viking Mekong (brand name for the chartered from Pandaw Cruises riverboat "Mekong Pandaw").
Viking Saigon's sistership/same-designed fleetmate is Viking Tonle (2025).
The newbuild riverboat Viking Saigon has max passenger capacity 80 (plus 35 staff-crew). It offers magnificent riverside views from every stateroom due to the large windows and plenty of open-deck space. The atmosphere onboard is extraordinarily friendly, with exceptional service provided by a professionally trained English-speaking crew.
The vessel's builder was Hai Minh Shipyard (Saigon Shipyards Co Ltd) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam .
Viking Saigon's inaugural cruise was initially scheduled for August 30, 2021 (15-day "Magnificent Mekong" itinerary), but due to the COVID crisis was postponed by a year.
Decks and Cabins
Viking Saigon staterooms (a total of 40) are all outside (French Balcony) cabins, each fitted with floor-ceiling windows slide-opening to a railing (false balcony). Great experience will recommend
From the Angkor Temples to the Mekong Delta (port-to-port cruise)
We had a great time. Accommodation was very good although our room at the back was a little noisy due to being near the generator and engine room which I would not recommend ( maybe a discounted price should be offered ). Very well organized and excellent tour manager. Always something on the itinerary even whilst the boat was sailing eg cookery demos, serviette folding, fruit carving, talks, films. I think the cruise could be shortened by a couple of days as a lot of the things we saw were very repetitive ,especially the pagodas! We were the only English guests on board which at times was a little difficult but on the plus side we had our own personal English speaking guides (3 in total at different parts of the cruise) which was fantastic. Chan Seng in Cambodia has to have a special mention for his fantastic knowledge and understanding of English. The food both on board and at restaurants on land was excellent my only complaint was that the drinks were not included in the package which for the price we paid I think they should have been, as most cruises do, ( only a soft drink or a beer were included per person per meal). Overall I would recommend this cruise as we had a lovely time.

Our family enjoyed the tour of Cambodia and Vietnam. It was a well organized trip with very knowledgeable and professional guides who had with good english. We also had excellent and safe drivers. During the trip to Cambodia we had a slight problem with one of our group's Vietnam visa. Mr. Danny and his team sorted this issue promptly for us without a significant delay with the tour. Overall a fantastic experience and we learned a lot about the history and culture of the two countries and the area in such a short time.
