On our 1st trip to Tarpon Springs we were solicited by Kim walking back to our vehicle. She offered us free parking, 10% off food or a free drink at Yianni Restaurant and 10% off in the Spongeorama store. However since I made reservations on the phone we were charged a $5 parking fee, small price to pay to ensure we could get on the tour at the time we wanted. The land staff does have to I dont care attitude but the Sea staff was very pleasant. This is a boat tour just under 2 hours. Seating is first come first served and not very comfortable. They even had lawn chairs for extra seating. Once the cruise gets underway the bar is open - drinks are not inlcuded in the price of the ticket. The captain gave a nice narrative and he even went to the area where we saw Dolphins. The tour takes you to Anclote Island which is full of seashells. The tour does stop on the island and they give you 30 minutes to collect as many seashells as you can with the provided basket - no need to bring one. After you are back on the boat you are given a plastic bag to store your collection. On the way back to the dock we continued to look out for more Dolphins. Military including Veterans receive a discount on the ticket price. For 3 adults we paid less then $90 with 2 military discounted fairs. This is a nice little boat trip and even though Dolphin sighting is not guaranteed it was a nice little afternoon excursion.

Once you get past the overwhelming sales pitch of the company's other products and the sullen nature of the land staff you board a older but efficient bait to sail out to the gulf. It's a nice ride out thru the canal into the gulf, the boats captain has lots of information of the area and it was a great day to be on the water. A stop at shell island was the highlight of the trip for us, and there's no disappointment here, it is full of shells, your only there for a half hour, I could have stayed the day!! But back in the boat hunting for dolphin sightings and back to port. All in all a fun day, nothing fancy but worth the price.

This was worth what I paid for! Ticket was $25 or so. We did get to luckily see a dolphin or two (it's not guaranteed) and we got to go to a small island and go searching for sea shells. Guides were nice, had a good sense of humor etc. They offer snacks and beverages (including alcoholic Kinky styles) on the boat. I would like to bring more with next time. Took around an hour and a half

We booked a 4pm cruise this morning on line. When we went to check in at 330 the lady out front in the booth told us it was too early. We went to look around the sponge dock store and asked the cashier at the store when was a good time to check in for the 4pm cruise. She said that we had to go back to the booth. After walking back across the parking lot to the booth we were told that they did not have us on their reservation list and were over booked. I showed her the email confirmation and she told me we had to wait until 6 to go. I asked for a refund and left. Do not book this cruise! Go right down the street to Odyssey on the same side of the road. They are so much nicer!

We took 2 tours on this same boat on the same day. The first was a regular dolphin tour. We stopped at the Anclote island for 30 min. And found a basket full of amazing shells! The 2nd was a sunset cruise which was also amazing!! The captain took the time to position the boat so everyone could have a chance to take plenty of pictures of the beautiful sunset. We saw multiple dolphins on both tours, the captain made sure to stop and make every effort to get the dolphins to interact so everyone had the chance to see them. The crew was so awesome, informative, down to earth and treated us like vip. Bonus was the full bar on the boat and prices were not bad at all! WELL worth the money!!!!!

Great trip today, July 28, on the Sunset cruise. Captains we're great, lots of dolphins, and we founds a lot of shells on the island. We even found a sponge! Complete terrific experience!!

Photo of Jennifer S.

Just walking by when I asked one of the guys selling tickets if he had a good story to go with the arm in his sling. Sure enough, the story was great! Hadn't booked the cruise but told me they had 1 seat left. I said "is there drinks on the boat?" "Sure is!!" He said. "I'm in!" Pretty affordable for a 2 hour sunset cruise. I was not disappointed! The views were amazing and the guide was pretty funny. The beach was nice and very private. Didn't see any dolphins but that's ok, I'm not a dolphin whisperer anyway. Group was lively and I didn't feel out of place even though I was traveling alone. Definitely recommend. The bouncer/bartender makes a mean margarita!

Both captains were amazing and very friendly! We had a great time watching the dolphins and picking up shells on the beach.

Photo of Kim O.

Had a blast! The two man crew were great: friendly, extremely informative and fun! Beautiful scenery and hunting for shells on one of the many islands a hoot! Even saw three dolphins, two adults and baby. Loved every minute of this two hour excursion. A must for and visitor of Tarpon Springs.

Photo of Lisa F.

Customer BEWARE! Booked a trip which should go out to the sandbar so we could hunt for shells. The boat had a problem with an engine before got to the sandbar so they said we couldn't do it and headed back to the dock. In the end, the only refund they offered was $3.00 off your NEXT trip with them. Seriously? So if you aren't from the area you are just screwed. Apparently they don't care about customer satisfaction. They could have at least offered one free drink for everyone on the boat or some gesture like that instead of just trying to get more business for themselves. This certainly isn't the kind of service that encourages me to book with them again.

Spongeorama: The Surprising Attraction in Florida You Can’t-Miss

spongeorama dolphin cruise

If you’re planning a trip to Florida and are on the lookout for something different, Spongeorama is a place you can’t miss. Known for its unique theme and charm, this attraction is all about sponges – yes, you read that right, sponges! It’s not your everyday tourist spot, making it a surprising stop on your itinerary.

Spongeorama, located in Tarpon Springs, stands out from the crowd with its unusual appeal. Instead of roller coasters or sandy beaches, here you’ll find a world dedicated entirely to the humble sponge. This focus on such an unexpected subject is what makes Spongeorama so special and intriguing.

The magic of it lies in its ability to take something as simple as a sponge and turn it into an entire experience. Its divergence from typical tourist attractions offers visitors a new perspective, making it a peculiar yet fascinating destination. So, if you’re up for an adventure that’s off the beaten path, Spongeorama might just be the quirky detour you need.

Spongeorama’s Sponge-Centric Weirdness Unveiled

Spongeorama, situated at the heart of the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, has made a unique name for itself by focusing on something as simple and seemingly mundane as sponges. The theme park’s bizarre focus on sponges is what sets it apart from other attractions ( Spongeorama Cruise Lines ).

spongeorama dolphin cruise

The sponge-centric theme permeates every aspect of the park, from its museum that features a Greek sponge diver history movie to a variety of nature sea sponges on display. Visitors get to delve into the world of sponges, learning about their history, uses, and even their role in the local ecosystem. This unusual subject matter contributes to the park’s unique charm and makes it a fascinating destination for those seeking something out of the ordinary ( Spongeorama Sponge Factory – TripAdvisor ).

Spongeorama doesn’t just stop at educating visitors about sponges; it also offers a hands-on experience. The park’s famous Sponge Factory and Museum allows guests to see a free Sponge Diving Movie, further immersing them in the world of sponges. It’s this kind of interactive and engaging approach that truly brings the sponge-centric theme to life, making Spongeorama an oddly intriguing place to visit ( Spongeorama Sponge Factory ).

What Strange Facts Can You Learn at Spongeorama’s Sponge Museum?

Spongeorama’s Sponge Museum stands as a testament to the seemingly ordinary yet surprisingly fascinating world of sponges. This one-of-a-kind museum in Tarpon Springs, Florida, is home to an array of intriguing exhibits that shed light on the peculiarities of these aquatic organisms ( Spongeorama ).

What makes this museum truly unique is its focus on presenting a wealth of strange facts about sponges. These facts not only pique visitors’ curiosity but also contribute to the museum’s weird and wonderful charm. Let’s dive into some of the unusual sponge facts that you can uncover at Spongeorama’s Sponge Museum.

  • Sponge Evolution: Sea sponges have a rich evolutionary history, dating back over 500 million years. They are considered one of the oldest animal groups on Earth ( Facts.net ).
  • Animal, not Plant: Despite their plant-like appearance, sea sponges are animals. This common misconception is often corrected at the museum, much to the surprise of many visitors ( Ocean of Hope ).
  • Non-Moving Creatures: Adult sponges are sessile, meaning they don’t move around. Instead, they stay fixed in one place, adding to their intriguing nature ( Cool Kid Facts ).
  • Regeneration Ability: Sponges are known for their remarkable ability to regenerate from fragments. This means if a sponge is broken up, each piece can grow into a new sponge ( Kiddle ).

Discovering these strange facts about sponges is part of the unique experience that makes a visit to Spongeorama’s Sponge Museum so memorable. It’s not every day you find a place that turns the ordinary into something extraordinary in such a fun and educational way.

Unusual Sights on Spongeorama Cruise Lines

If you think the oddities end at Spongeorama’s sponge-centric museum, you’re in for a surprise. The Spongeorama Cruise Lines, an integral part of this unique attraction, offers a whole new level of peculiar experiences ( Spongeorama Cruise Lines ).

As the only sightseeing cruise in Tarpon Springs that takes you down the beautiful waters of the Anclote River to the Gulf of Mexico, it serves up a blend of natural beauty, wildlife spotting, and yes, more sponge-based curiosities! Here are some of the strange and intriguing sights that await visitors on a Spongeorama cruise.

  • Sponge Harvesting Demonstration: Witness the age-old tradition of sponge harvesting in action. This demonstration offers a rare glimpse into how sponges are collected from the sea, making it an intriguing spectacle for visitors ( TripAdvisor ).
  • Dolphin and Manatee Spotting: While not necessarily strange, the sight of dolphins and manatees in their natural habitat is always a delightful surprise. The cruise offers plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting, adding an extra layer of excitement to the journey ( Sponge Docks ).
  • Bird Watching: The Anclote River and the Gulf of Mexico are home to a variety of bird species. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy identifying different types during the cruise, making it an oddly satisfying experience for nature lovers ( Visit St Pete Clearwater ).

The Spongeorama Cruise Lines provide an unconventional yet captivating journey, filled with unexpected sights and experiences. It’s the perfect way to round off your visit to this bizarrely charming attraction.

Spongeorama’s Quirky Souvenirs: An Extra Touch of Uniqueness

Just when you thought Spongeorama couldn’t get any more eccentric, you stumble upon their quirky souvenir shop. The shop, much like the rest of the attraction, is all about sponges and offers a range of odd sponge-related souvenirs that add another layer to Spongeorama’s weirdness.

  • Natural Sponges: The shop boasts the world’s largest selection of natural sponges. From bath sponges to cleaning sponges, these functional yet unusual souvenirs are sure to remind you of your unique visit.
  • Bath & Beauty Products: Spongeorama also offers a line of virgin olive oil-based beauty products imported from Greece. These include goat’s milk and olive oil soaps, adding an unexpected twist to the usual souvenir options.
  • Greek and Florida Souvenirs: In addition to sponge-related items, the shop sells unique Greek and Florida souvenirs. These range from traditional Greek items to Florida-themed mementos, offering something for everyone ( Spongeorama Sponge Factory ).
  • Vintage Souvenirs: For those seeking something truly unique, look out for vintage souvenirs like the 1970s Spongeorama pennant. These rare finds add a touch of nostalgia to the mix (Etsy).

The odd and interesting range of souvenirs available at Spongeorama’s shop is yet another testament to its distinct charm. Whether you’re looking for a practical keepsake or a unique gift, you’re sure to find something truly memorable.

What Bizarre Reviews Have Visitors Left About Spongeorama?

Spongeorama, an attraction that is as quirky as it is educational, has garnered a variety of bizarre reviews from visitors. These reviews are a testament to the eccentric nature of the museum, cruise line, and souvenir shop. Let’s take a look at some of these outlandish experiences that underline Spongeorama’s unique charm.

spongeorama dolphin cruise

  • Creepy, Weird, and Strange: One reviewer on TripAdvisor described their experience at the Spongeorama Sponge Factory as “creepy, weird, and very strange.” Yet, this review highlights the museum’s peculiar allure that keeps visitors intrigued.
  • Odd Employees: Another visitor praised the trip but found the employees to be “odd.” This adds to the overall eccentric vibe of the place.
  • Diver’s Nightmare: A review on Roadside America mentioned the “Sponge Diver’s Nightmare” diorama at the museum. This peculiar exhibit offers a dramatic contrast to the otherwise cheerful sponge-related displays.
  • Naval Battles: A visitor mentioned on Pinterest about the re-created naval battles viewable at Spongeorama. This unexpected spectacle adds another layer to the attraction’s odd charm.

These bizarre reviews reflect the unique experience that Spongeorama offers, underlining its status as a truly out-of-the-ordinary attraction. Whether it’s the strange exhibits, the peculiar staff, or the unexpected reenactments, there’s no denying Spongeorama’s eccentric appeal.

Why Is Spongeorama a Must-Visit for Lovers of the Quirky and Unusual?
