Racepak Installation with AF1 O2 sensors
- Add to quote
I have a Racepak Sportsman system with 2 AF1 O2 controllers. I have the racepak powered up anytime the main disconnect is turned on. This is problematic when sitting in the lanes for long periods of time with the AF1 heaters on at about 2A each. I am using the v-net so I believe that is how they get power (I also had the orange wire ran to +12V because that is how I thought they were powered). I would like to be able to sit in the lanes with the main power disconnect turned on without draining my battery. Any ideas?

Power down the logger through the switch panel or a toggle?, I assumed everyone power switched the logger?
In most applications, I don't recommend using the orange wire. The result is when the Sportsman is on, the O2 is on. If the car does not have a digital dash, you put the Sportsman on the ignition switch - usually no issues. If you have a dash you always want lit up but don't want the O2's going, then you would have to rig a switch and relay to control the red power wire on the AF1 module.

It's important to remember the power for the O2 comes from a red & black wire in the same cable with the orange. The trigger signal to get the O2 on comes thru the V-net, but the POWER to run it comes from the red/black. Draws 2 amps per AF1. So my recommendation: Put the red wire from your Sportsman to the ignition switch. When you turn the ignition on your whole Racepak world will go on.

On the Reacepak wiring diagram is shows the speedo has only one wire going to the dash. But on the T56 i have a VSS + and a VSS - coming out of the tranny. Also is the T56 speedo sender a Hall effect or Sine wave style? -->

How to connect a MSD Power Grid
1. Use a V-net T cable with the straight end into the Grid harness and the T end anywhere in your V-net network.
2. If you have a Sportsman, you must be on Datalink 4.8.8 or higher and your firmware must be Product Version 5 or above. To check Datalink version, load Datalink, go to Help and click on about. To check your Firmware/Product Version click here Firmware . Each Grid channel uses one Sportsman channel so usually you only enable timing.
3. If you have a IQ3 drag dash keep in mind that each Grid channel uses one channel so usually you only enable timing.
4. You must ENABLE whatever channels you want in the Grid software (Some early Grid 7730's have all channels enabled so you have to DISABLE all but the ones you want)
5. Once your Grid channels are enabled and wiring done turn the power on to your Racepak and turn on ignition switch to activate the Grid.
6. Connect your laptop to the your Racepak unit. Open Datalink and your config file on the laptop and do a READ VNET. This should bring in the enabled Grid channels. They will show as MSD Ignition Timing etc. click on file/save to save your config. If the Grid channels do not appear review the steps above.
7. Now your data logs will show the new channels.

How to create multiple Sportsman steups in one laptop
Caution! do not do this unless you are familiar with Windows Copy / Paste and Rename. Get a computer person to help you. Some of the screen shots below will change with different Windows versions. If you get it jacked-up you will have to re-install Datalink from your stick.
- In Windows File Explorer navigate to your C: drive. You may have an icon on your tool bar that looks like a tan file folder or you can go to My PC or type in explorer in the search bar.
- Open RacePakData folder(double click or Open) and you should get this:
![racepak travel sensor wiring diagram racepak travel sensor wiring diagram](https://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/racepak-help-tips_clip_image002b.jpg)
- Right click and copy this Sportsman folder (you may have to go to show more options to get the copy function).
- Right click out in the white area and choose paste. This will create Sportsman (copy):
![racepak travel sensor wiring diagram racepak travel sensor wiring diagram](https://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/racepak-help-tips_clip_image004.jpg)
- Right click on the Sportsman folder and select Rename (you may have a choice – show more options and then Rename will be available. Replace the highlighted Sportsman with your car name/nickname (no more than 10 characters and no spaces). For this example I chose SC-Dragster.
![racepak travel sensor wiring diagram racepak travel sensor wiring diagram](https://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/racepak-help-tips_clip_image006.jpg)
- Go up one folder level (view the contents of RacePakData)
- Right click on folder Sportsman (copy ) and rename it to Nova (or whatever name/nickname you choose) and you should have this:
![racepak travel sensor wiring diagram racepak travel sensor wiring diagram](https://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/racepak-help-tips_clip_image008.jpg)
- Open the Nova folder (double click) and rename Sportsman.RCG to Nova and you are finished.
Machining a collar to a new size
- Use .040 spacers between halves (without the spacers the collars are not round. They measure true across the parting line)
- keep heat down as 200*F will hurt magnets
- if you remove magnets make sure you get south side facing out
![racepak travel sensor wiring diagram racepak travel sensor wiring diagram](https://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/collar-resize.jpg)
How to E-mail a Configuration File
- If a choice comes up, select file/attachment NOT pictures.
- then to the RacePakData folder
- if you have a Sportsman recorder go to Sportsman folder, and select Sportsman_Config.RCG
- if you have a IQ3 Drag then IQ3 folder and select IQ3drag.
- If a V300SD go to V300SD_NNN (your serial number) folder and select V300SD_NNNN.RCG
- add any message you want to include then click Send

Factory yokes usually do not have a concentric spot. They need to be machined or replaced with an aftermarket yoke.
How to overlay runs
- You must have previously downloaded the runs onto your laptop. To view downloaded runs go to File/OPEN and locate the runs in the year/track folders.
- You must set the start point (or Zero time) for each of the runs. To set the start point:
- File/Open a run.
- Use the Zoom (+) and/or the large red arrows to position & size the run.
- Place the cursor (left click) where the trans-brake releases and the engine RPM jumps up off the 2-step.
- Use the right & left arrows on the keyboard to position the cursor exactly at the launch point. You can observe the Accel G-meter channel to help with this. DO NOT use drive shaft movement to set the start point.
- Click on the green T on the toolbar on the left side of the screen.
- Click on File/Save then File/ Close.
- Repeat above for all runs you want to overlay.
- Now that you have the start point set for all runs you want to overlay you can open them.
- Make sure channel mirroring is off (VIEW / CHANNEL MIRRORING)
- Click on File/Open and navigate thru the year/track folders and open the first run.
- Click on File Open and navigate thru the year/track folders and open the second run.
- The runs will now be on your screen overlaid. You can choose one of the runs (say run1) and change the colors of the channels you are most interested in by repeatedly clicking the channel button so you get a good contrast. At the top of the graph area are tabs for the two runs – you click on the tab and then the data value in the channel box will be for that run.
If the runs don’t quite line up close all the files and re-set the start point for whatever run and then resume with step 3.
How to enable shock sensors
Open your configuration and right click on the shock channel. The screen below will appear. Left click to highlight Channel Mode (Note the highlighted Channel Mode & Enable/Disable). Select enable on the right side drop-down and then click on Send Configuration. Also, verify the length of the sensor in the sensor window (2nd column, 3rd line) - in this example; 8 inch to match what's in the car.
![racepak travel sensor wiring diagram racepak travel sensor wiring diagram](https://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/Training/shock-enable.jpg)
How change DS pulses on one data log
Its common that the Channel setup is mismatched with the actual number of magnets on the DS collar. The result might be a DS RPM of 28,000 when it's should be 7,000 (2 pulses in setup but 8 mags on collar)- or maybe DS RPM of 4000 when it should be 8000 (8 pulses in setup but 4 actual magnets). There is a Tech Tip above to fix it permanentely. To fix it for one data log follow these steps:
- Verify number of pulses is wrong in the way that you believe (count ACTUAL magnets on the collar vs Pulses Per Revolution shown below)
- Change the Raw data B will become cell to the factor to correct the error (if you are getting 4 times the correct DS RPM then put in .25 where the example has .5. Or if you show 1/2 the correct number, enter 2 in that cell)
![racepak travel sensor wiring diagram racepak travel sensor wiring diagram](https://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/Training/DS-pulse-fix.jpg)
How change pressure sensor scaling
Occasionally you need to change a pressure range. For example if you changed from a carb to fuel injection, your fuel pressure isn't 7lbs, it's over 100. You need a new pressure sender and you have to change the scaling inside your v-net module to match.
1. open your car configuration in Datalink
2. Right click on the pressure channel to be changed
3. Use the drop down arrows shown below in highlight 1 to select Pump Pressure and 0-150.
4. The result should look like highlight 2.
5. Click on send configuration - highlight 3.
6. you should get a message saying devices programmed successfully and click OK
7 click of File/save

Understanding Vacuum
A. Pan Vacuum
Pan or crankcase vac is created by your vacuum pump. Without a vac pump, you will probably have a samall amount of pressure in your crankcase. Some Stock eliminator cars use a PCV valve to create a small amount of vac and the pan-e-vac systems with hoses running from the valve covers to the header collectors. Blown cars with the 1 1/4" vent hoses going into a 1 gallon can would not have presure or vac (possibly a blown head gasket or worse would show pressure).
Vac is measured in inches Hg - it's not a negative number. Typical vac numbers are 12 to 18 inches.
