SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

Sail the Mediterranean to fabled islands of antiquity and romance... to turquoise seas, archipelagos, and out-of-the-way places where Jason searched for the Golden Fleece and Odysseus pursued Destiny. From the South of France to the island of Malta, enjoy world-renowned wine, local delicacies, and the cultural treasures of historic empires.

Discover the medieval harbor of bonifacio on the island of corsica.

In the 12th century, Boniface II of Tuscany built a fortified town at the tip of Corsica, perched above soaring white cliffs and crashing surf. The town of Bonifacio was meant to guard the Tuscan coast from Saracens and pirates, and its brilliant defensive position defied foreign assaults for centuries. The fjordlike harbor is only accessible to small ships and private yachts – oh, like the one you'll be sailing! Once ashore, you can hop a minitrain for a ride up to the citadel, wander the maze of medieval lanes, marvel at the fort and the breathtaking views, and drink in its turbulent history.

Ortygia, the magical little island within the island of Sicily

Cicero called Ortygia the most beautiful of Grecian cities, but that was then. Today, it's typically called the most beautiful of Italian cities, tucked away in the heart of Syracusa, on a romantic urban island of labyrinthine alleys, Greek temples, Baroque churches, palazzos of honey-hued stone, elegant piazzas, fountains, outdoor cafes, sea walls and promenades, and 3,000 years of history. From the Temple of Apollo to the Arab marketplace, the Byzantine church, the harborside medieval castle, and the anomalous statue of Athena atop the Duomo, the faded glories of past empires blend in this lively, enchanting place, a step outside of time.

The Mysterious Megalithic Temples of Malta

Legend says they were built by giants, a reasonable assumption since the Megalithic Temples on Malta are typically made of 50-ton stone blocks, piled 15 feet high. But more likely the prehistoric people who built them were normal sized, with technical skills beyond our expectations, which is why the temple complexes at Hagar Qim and Mnajdra in Qrendi, older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids, are UNESCO World Heritage sites, cultural monuments where you can delve into ancient mysteries and the building blocks of civilization.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into France, Italy and Malta; however, you will not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact a consulate or embassy of France, Italy and Malta to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

International Maritime Security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the cruise ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

All Ponant ships have a licensed and registered physician onboard for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's small infirmary is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended to or capable of providing on-going treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

Ponant ships are registered in France. If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

To enjoy this cruise you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our onshore excursions. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.On board the ship, certain outer decks have been designated as non-smoking areas. There is no smoking permitted in the interior of the ship. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Some ship to shore transportation is by the ship's tenders. Occasionally you will get wet with spray.

Onboard ship, health and fitness devotees will find a spa and fitness center on Deck 7.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.  Guests must advise Tauck at the time of booking any food allergies or special dietary requirements.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Summer along the coast of Italy, France and in Malta ranges from very warm to hot, with temperatures often above 90°F (32°C) during the day and dropping only to 70°F (21°C) at night. In the fall the temperatures range from 60 to 80°F (16 to 27°C).

Rainfall can occur anytime throughout the year, though July and August are the driest months.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Southern France, coastal Italy and Malta in summer have very warm, if not hot, days and warm evenings, though at sea the evening breezes do provide cooler temperatures. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is always advisable. A light jacket or sweater for the evenings on deck is also recommended. Comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in are a must, as many of the sites visited were built in antiquity and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required for dining with your fellow guests at a Tauck provided dinner. When traveling abroad, you may have the opportunity to dine at an upscale restaurant on your own, which may require men to dress in coat and tie, and women in more elegant eveningwear.

Shipboard attire is casual and informal. The usual dinner dress aboard the Ponant ship   is also casual and relaxed; while a jacket and tie is not required, shorts and bathing attire are not appropriate at meal times. However, the Captain's dinners aboard the Ponant ship   are occasions for festive attire.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at all the hotels on this itinerary. On board, valet laundry and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

Hairdryers are located in all hotel rooms and shipboard staterooms. Hair curling and clothes irons are not permitted onboard the ship for safety reasons.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for a cruise in the Mediterranean:

  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken in
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Collapsible trekking pole or walking stick
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Travel Tips for Your Mediterranean Trip

Which countries are in the mediterranean.

The Mediterranean is a large and diverse area to visit with countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea or Mediterranean Basin. The region shares characteristics of hot, dry summers and cool, humid winters. Each country has its own unique history, culture, and heritage while also showcasing distinctive landscapes. Countries you can visit in the Mediterranean include:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • North Macedonia

When is the best time to visit the Mediterranean?

Summer is the most popular time to visit the Mediterranean, but we recommend taking your Mediterranean trip in the shoulder months of May and June or September and October.

During these months, in spring and fall, you can enjoy the warm Mediterranean temperature but with a more comfortable ambiance for city tours, sightseeing, and visiting the famous beaches. The shoulder season offers a more authentic and open experience with fewer tourists. The weather and smaller crowds are great for exploring the coastline and famous places in Italy , Croatia , Greece , Spain , Portugal , and France in May and early October.

While these months are our favorites, the region's mild temperatures make the Mediterranean a year-round destination, with summer and winter incredible for their own reasons.

Whether traveling as a family to Sicily in June or touring Morocco in December, our guide on the best time to visit the Mediterranean can help you find the right month for your trip.

Where should I visit in the Mediterranean?

From the ruins of Rome in Italy to the elegant coastline of the French Riviera, there is much to explore around the Mediterranean from one country to the next.

Here are a few of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean :

  • Athens, Greece: The Greek capital is an epicenter of legends and culture, where artwork, delicious cuisine, and tremendous architecture span thousands of years.
  • Barcelona, Spain : The combination of surreal beauty and Mediterranean ambiance make Barcelona an alluring city with a culture defined by mouthwatering food and a jovial atmosphere at all hours of the day.

Dubrovnik, Croatia : Medieval walls, beautiful coastline, and lively cafes blend Dubrovnik’s Old World charm with contemporary life for a unique city to explore cobbled streets and the surrounding mountains.

What should I do in the Mediterranean?

From finding some of Europe’s most prominent artworks to enjoying the world-famous scenery,  here are some of the top things to do in the Mediterranean :

  • Tour the ruins of the Roman Empire to learn about the origins and remains across the Mediterranean
  • Explore the museums and archeological sites to find some of Europe’s finest artwork
  • Relax at the gorgeous resort towns that dot the Mediterranean coastline Sample the delicious seafood and culinary cultural staples around the Mediterranean

What is the Mediterranean known for?

The Mediterranean is known for its remarkably clear blue waters and mouth watering cuisine represented in countries like Italy, France, Greece, and Turkey . With a history of trade between regional countries spanning millennia, architectural ruins, world-class wines, and impressive artwork accompany the best beaches you can visit on a Mediterranean vacation.

What are your most popular Mediterranean itineraries?

The best Mediterranean itinerary for you will blend your interests and preferences with new experiences. You may prefer to spend an entire week sailing the Dalmatian Islands in Croatia or travel Spain’s Costa Brava into France.

Whether you prefer to lounge on the Mykonos beaches or bask in Turkish delicacies, explore exciting wines, or cycle the lush hills, our best Mediterranean itineraries allow you to customize each day to make the journey your own.

What else should I know about how to plan a trip to the Mediterranean?

The cradle of humanity and an ancient cultural crossroads, a trip to the Mediterranean can encompass a whole world of wonders. Stretching from Gibraltar to the Middle East , a holiday in the Mediterranean’s sparkling waters can take in the bazaars of Istanbul , the souks of North Africa , and the rugged cliffside villages of the Amalfi Coast .

Tour Highlights

  • Stroll through the ancient streets of Picasso’s birthplace, Malaga , and discover a new side to Costa del Sol amid a history that takes in the Roman Empire, the Arab conquest of Spain, and the galleries of its Soho district.
  • Relax on the sands and enjoy the laid-back summer vibe of Hammamet, Tunisia ’s foremost beach resort— just a short ride to the medieval medinas of Sousse, Monastir, and Tunis.
  • Explore the oldest freestanding structures in the world at the temple complexes of Hagar Qim, Taxien, and Ggantija in  Malta and Gozo , right at the geographical heart of the Mediterranea.
  • Rent an iconic Vespa and wind your way through the twisting hills of Italy ’s Amalfi Coast, between Salerno and Sorrento, stopping off at village piazzas where time seems to have stood still.
  • Check out one of the Mediterranean’s hottest destinations, Tel Aviv . Known for its nightlife of international DJ sets and all-night parties, be sure to also save some time for the 14 kilometers of Mediterranean coastline the Israeli city is able to boast
  • Step off dry land and onto the sleek lines of a yacht, island hopping between Greece’s most inspiring spots, from the whitewashed villages of Santorini to the quaint windmills of Mykonos , and family-friendly beaches of Kefalonia.

Travel Tips

  • The summer months almost guarantee cloudless skies and warm temperatures. However, it’s also peak season – with prices to match. Spring and autumn are also great times to visit the region, with pleasant temperatures both day and night.
  • Don’t be afraid to leave the guidebook at home. The Mediterranean is one of the easiest regions in the world to navigate as a visitor, with some of the best cuisine served from tiny family-run bistros and trattoria that you won’t find in the guidebooks.
  • If you’re short of time but still want to explore all the Mediterranean has to offer, consider a cruise. No longer the stuffy ships they once were, cruises offer a great combination of organized and independent travel, and are sure to take in all the main sights
  • Doing a little pre-trip preparation can save a lot of time on the road. For instance, pre-booking tickets for the region’s most popular attractions or transport options will save you plenty of worry, and hours of queueing.
  • Take a reusable water bottle with you. Many of the Mediterranean’s destinations offer clean drinkable water from public water fountains, keeping you hydrated in the heat and saving you a small fortune on throw-away bottles.

Luxury Mediterranean Tours & Trips Reviews

Excellent tour. I was made to feel special right from the go, as I received a very warm welcome. I learnt so much of the history of the Balkans and was introduced to places I had never heard of. The restaurant choices choices were wonderful. I learnt to eat and appreciate local food All guides were amazing but I loved Viktor in North Macedonia because of his friendly and quiet personality. Mike was amazing as a tour leader, who made sure everything was up to standard . He also checked that I was having a great experience. Ivan our drive is one of the best. To Tiana and Ivan the photographers who accompanied us, thank you for ensuring I had the best time. Your photographs and videos are very special. My highlights, way to many to mention but Kotor, Postajne caves, Tirana, Skopje and Sarajeva were some but for different reasons. Would I book Balkland again definitely. The experience is what counts and I really learnt to appreciate the varied countries and gained a small insight into their beauty and history.
It was a wonderful trip. Would definitely reccommend.
Enjoyed the tour. The overall area was quite large to see-a lot of road time. Luisa, the bus driver and the local guides were very nice and patient. A tour that focused on 2 or 3 metro areas with more local activites would be an alternative idea.

Travel tips for Mediterranean tours

Visit a local vineyard.  Many of the world’s best wines are produced in the Mediterranean. Travelers on our Mediterranean tours will visit vineyards and wineries in Italy and Greece to learn how grapes are grown, harvested, and transformed into world-class wines.

Explore ancient ruins.  The Mediterranean is home to some of the world’s most important ancient ruins, from the Parthenon in Athens to the Colosseum in Rome. On our Mediterranean trips, travelers can get a chance to see what life was like as early civilizations developed.

See why traveler Donna says ancient ruins are among her top 10 reasons to visit the Mediterranean  →

Go island-hopping.  The Mediterranean is studded with postcard-worthy islands, and no two are exactly alike. Our Mediterranean tours offer the chance to hop from Ischia to Capri in Italy. In Greece, travelers can hopscotch between Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, and other dreamy island gems.

The Mediterranean is a year-round destination, but here are a few things to keep in mind when considering going on a trip to the Mediterranean.

Peak season in the Mediterranean falls during June, July, and August, when temperatures are at their warmest and most beach-friendly. This is also peak travel season in the region, so travelers on Mediterranean vacations during this time are likely to encounter larger crowds.

In shoulder season, which falls during April and May, temperatures are pleasant and crowds are significantly thinner, making it the best time to visit the Mediterranean for travelers who prefer calm and quiet.

In fall and winter, crowds all but disappear, as do peak-season prices on everything from food to souvenirs. Travelers who visit the Mediterranean in winter can enjoy holiday festivals, food, music, and decorations throughout the region.

The Mediterranean is home to more cultural, architectural, and natural treasures than we can count. Here are a few of the highlights you can experience on our Mediterranean tours.

  • The Parthenon.  Perched atop the Acropolis in Athens, this iconic marble temple was built between 447 and 432 B.C., during the height of the ancient Greek Empire. Travelers who visit Greece on trips like our  Italy & Greece tour  can see it up close during a guided tour.
  • The Greek Islands.  With their laid-back beaches, charming villages, friendly locals, and distinctive architecture, it’s no wonder the Greek Islands are a popular vacation spot for travelers from around the world. Want to visit several on a single trip? Our Mediterranean vacation packages make it easy.
  • Cinque Terre.  These five, traffic-free fishing villages in the Italian region of Liguria perch along a six-mile stretch of the Italian Riviera and are linked together by scenic footpaths. Each village is packed with pastel-hued homes and offers travelers who book Mediterranean tour packages a distinctly different, but decidedly relaxed, vibe.
  • Dubrovnik, Croatia.  Overlooking the azure Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities. Visitors who travel to the Mediterranean in the summertime can enjoy its sparkling beaches, as well as boat rides along its dramatic coast.
  • Venice.  Arguably one of the most romantic cities in the world, Venice is built across 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea and is known for its network of canals. Travelers who book Mediterranean travel packages that include Venice can explore the city’s canals on a gondola ride, and visit other major landmarks, such as St. Mark’s Square.

Check out photos traveler Harris snapped of his favorite spots on our Italy & Greece tour  →

  • Comfortable walking shoes.  No matter which of our Mediterranean tours you choose, be sure to bring sturdy shoes with a good grip. They’ll keep your feet and ankles happy while walking on cobblestones, uneven streets, hiking paths, and other surfaces.
  • A day bag.  Keep your water, wallet, sunglasses, extra layers, and other essentials handy in a small backpack, crossbody, or tote.
  • A shawl, wrap, or cardigan.  A light layer will add a touch of extra warmth during outdoor dinners by the water, and protect your shoulders from the sun during the daytime.
  • A good camera.  And an extra memory card or two to capture the Mediterranean’s natural, architectural, and cultural treasures.
  • Sun protection.  Think brimmed hats, sunglasses, and SPF for any time spent outside, especially during walking tours on sunny days.
  • A swimsuit and sandals.   Because when you spot the crystal-clear waters that lap at the Greek Islands’ beaches, you won’t be able to resist getting in.
  • Light, loose clothing.  If you plan to visit the Mediterranean in the summertime, when temperatures can be hot, pack lightweight, loose clothing that will help keep you comfortable and cool.
  • Fresh seafood.  Plucked straight from the Mediterranean Sea, local seafood, like anchovies, mussels, and other shellfish, is as fresh as it gets, making it a must-try when visiting the Mediterranean. Try it prepared simply (a squeeze of lemon and little else) or cooked into a filling pasta dish.
  • Kopanisti.  Thick, creamy, and with a peppery flavor, this spreadable sheep’s-milk cheese is often served with bread as a starter on the Greek island of Mykonos.
  • All the fresh fruit.  Thanks to the Mediterranean’s mild climate, a variety of fruits grow in the region are far superior in quality to those we often find in grocery stores. Stop at a local market to taste whatever’s in season. If you like olives, be sure to get your fill when you visit the Mediterranean.
  • Pesto.  The Ligurian Coast is famous for this basil-and-oil delicacy, making it a must-try when you visit Italy’s Cinque Terre.

Although the Mediterranean sees plenty of sunshine and warm weather in the spring, summer, and fall, winters here can be on the cool side. Be sure to check weather forecasts before you travel to the Mediterranean so you can pack accordingly.

Planning Your Perfect Mediterranean Adventure

Now that you have gained insights into the best time to cruise the Mediterranean and discovered some of the top destinations, it’s time to plan your perfect Mediterranean adventure in 2023. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your cruise:

Research and Select the Right Cruise Line

With a multitude of cruise lines offering Mediterranean itineraries, it’s crucial to research and choose the one that aligns with your preferences. Consider factors such as onboard amenities, dining options, shore excursions, and the overall atmosphere of the cruise line. Whether you seek luxury, family-friendly activities, or an immersive cultural experience, finding the right cruise line is key to a memorable journey.

If you are flying in before your cruise, for those of us not blessed to live close to a cruise port. Make sure you arrive a day early to be sure you have enough time to get to the ship. Its always very stressful arriving the day of the cruise and rushing around trying to find where you need to go. That causes too much unwanted stress and you could possibly miss your cruise. No one wants that!

Craft Your Ideal Itinerary

The Mediterranean offers an abundance of captivating destinations, each with its own allure and charm. Carefully consider the ports of call and shore excursions offered by your chosen cruise line, and tailor your itinerary to include the destinations that resonate with your interests. Whether you prefer historical sites, scenic beauty, or culinary experiences, crafting your ideal itinerary will ensure a fulfilling and enriching journey.

My idea of a great itinerary revolves around the history of where ever I am visiting. I love the museums, historical artifacts and just the experience of visiting something like the Acropolis or the Roman Coliseum. Throw in some local cuisine, especially in Italy the home of pizza! (I could live off pizza) I would call that the perfect Itinerary!

Book Popular Excursions early because they fill up fast. Everyone wants to go to Athens an visit the ruins, or to Santorini to walk up the endless miles of hills. Just make sure to get what you want and not worry about the rest. You are on vacation, rest some its the entire idea behind a vacation!

Embrace the Local Culture

Gozleme, Turkish, Turkish cuisine image

One of the greatest joys of cruising the Mediterranean is immersing yourself in the local culture and experiencing the authentic flavors of each destination. Engage with locals, try traditional dishes, explore local markets, and embrace the unique customs and traditions of the Mediterranean.

By immersing yourself in the local culture, you will create unforgettable memories and forge a deeper connection with the places you visit. Make sure to visit the places locals go to. If possible rent a local guide, they know the best places to visit and best eateries around town.

Pack Wisely and Prepare for Adventure

As you prepare for your Mediterranean cruise, ensure you pack wisely to make the most of your journey. Consider the weather conditions during your chosen travel dates and pack appropriate clothing and footwear. Don’t forget essentials such as sunscreen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes, and a reusable water bottle. Additionally, bring a sense of adventure and an open mind, as the Mediterranean offers surprises and delights at every turn.

I am a big fan of a few YouTube Cruise channels they explain packing better than I can, enjoy!

Top Mediterranean FAQs

Where do Mediterranean cruises go?

Whether you love art, history, natural wonders, fine cuisine, or all of the above, a Mediterranean cruise lets you experience something amazing at every stop. The Mediterranean region is vast, including many countries each with its own personality, cuisine, and scenery.

Celebrity’s Mediterranean cruises sail from Athens, Barcelona, Rome, Southampton, and Ravenna (Venice).

Feel like an old-fashioned movie star on the French Riviera, learn about military history in Malta, explore Biblical history in Israel, and delve back more than 4,000 years in time to Egypt.

How long are Mediterranean cruises?

Mediterranean cruises on Celebrity last from six to 12 nights. Spend seven nights visiting popular ports in Spain, France, and Italy, or longer voyages that include Greece and Turkey.

When’s the best time to cruise?

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean will vary depending on your particular interests and schedule. The main Mediterranean cruise season runs from April through November each year, with June to September the peak months. But with Celebrity you can cruise Europe year round.

July to September is the peak summer season in the Mediterranean, when most Europeans take their summer vacation. April, May, June, later in September, and October are all great months to visit, too. You can sail the Mediterranean with Celebrity right up to November, which is a wonderful time for sightseeing with fewer people around. The best time to head to the far south of the region is from February to April, when the climate is perfect for exploring Israel and Egypt.

What should I pack?

When you’re packing for a Mediterranean cruise, swimwear and beach outfits are essential. You’ll need comfortable shoes for sightseeing, whether this involves walking over uneven cobblestone roads or clambering over the rocky paths of the Acropolis in Athens.

A good sun hat is essential If you want to visit churches, synagogues, and cathedrals we recommend long pants or skirt and a scarf/shawl to cover your shoulders.

If you’re traveling at the beginning or the end of the season, the weather could be cool, so bring cover-ups and a light waterproof jacket.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What can I see while I’m there?

From the history-lined canals of Venice to the sun-soaked playgrounds of the French Riviera to the iconic architecture of Spain, our array of award-winning Europe vacations offers something special for every discerning world traveler.

Get up close to historic sites like the ancient Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens, and the charming Old City of Dubrovnik. Take stellar photos at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. See Michelangelo’s remarkable Renaissance artwork on the Sistine Chapel ceiling as you tour Vatican City.

In Portugal, experience the spectacular medieval architecture in Lisbon and taste a variety of Port wines in Porto. Explore our port of call in Italy, Trieste, and its ancient architecture, lively cultural scene, and Venetian-inspired coffeehouses. We’re also returning to Kusadasi, and Istanbul in Turkey.

Some of the most beautiful natural sights you’ll ever see may be the view of the whitewashed buildings and turquoise waters in Santorini or the pastel-colored fishing villages in the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Where are the best beaches?

The Mediterranean is fringed with  dazzlingly beautiful beaches . Here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world, wild dunes, craggy cliffs, rocky coves, and aquamarine shallows on others.

For long sweeps of sand, great watersports, and a lively scene, try Mykonos. If black or red sand intrigues you, head for Santorini. For old-fashioned glamor, visit the beaches around Italy’s Amalfi Coast or the chic beach towns along the French Riviera.

Sardinia arguably has the most beautiful turquoise water. Ibiza is fringed with pretty coves, some sleepy, some with cool beach bars and DJs spinning tunes all afternoon.

What is there for families to do on a Mediterranean cruise?

The Mediterranean is fantastic for families. It’s educational, it brings history to life, the shopping is great, the ice cream unsurpassed, and the beaches superb. Mediterranean cultures love kids, too, and children are welcomed everywhere.

Families can enjoy the Colosseum in Rome, gondola rides in Venice, the old walls of Dubrovnik, and cable cars for stunning city views or off-road buggy experiences. You can also experience Pompeii, the cave houses of Matera, and for soccer fans, Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.

Should I book tours ahead of time?

If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions around the Mediterranean are extremely popular.

Booking a shore excursion  with Celebrity also means you’ll be visiting attractions with a professional guide, and on a tour that guarantees to return you to the ship on time.

Whether you're looking for a private, customizable experience, a carefully curated guided tour with a small group, or an unforgettable trip to iconic local landmarks, we have the right option to discover any destination, granting in-depth knowledge, expertise, and a truly extraordinary experience.

Can I get around with English?

Many languages are spoken around the Mediterranean, from Maltese to French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, and Hebrew. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak some English.

Do I need a visa?

You will need a passport to travel to the Mediterranean, but the vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

Man United 2023 tour harmed last season - Christian Eriksen

mediterranean tour 2023

LOS ANGELES, California -- Christian Eriksen has said he is hopeful Manchester United 's summer tour of the United States provides good preparation for the new season after suggesting a difficult trip 12 months ago contributed to their poor campaign.

The 2023 tour consisted of stops in New Jersey, San Diego, Houston and Las Vegas. This time, the club have opted for a training camp at UCLA in California and just three games in Los Angeles, San Diego and South Carolina.

"It's different being at a base and travelling less to the games," Eriksen said.

"It's also a sponsor trip at the same time as fitness, and the football was pushed a little bit backwards last season looking at it. I do think this year, the football has been pushed forward and the focus is on that."

United's players will spend the bulk of this summer's tour in Los Angeles with a 10-day camp organised on the campus of UCLA.

It's in contrast to last year, when the squad trained in New Jersey and San Diego and took flights to games in Houston and Las Vegas.

"There were a lot of flights in between, there were a lot of short trips for one or two days in this city and then the next one," Eriksen said.

"It did feel like a lot of stuff was going on in a very short period. This is also going to be a lot of stuff, but it does feel different already. If we speak next year or in two weeks' time maybe I can say it was better or worse, but it's feeling better."

Eriksen has a year left on his contract at United and despite doubts about his future at Old Trafford, he insisted he wants to stay at Old Trafford.

He impressed for Denmark at Euro 2024 and after playing a reduced role for Erik ten Hag's team last season, the 32-year-old has admitted he wants to play more games.

"I have one year left so for me I am a United player," he said. "I haven't been told leave or extension, so in that sense I have one year left on the contract and I feel good, my family is feeling good living in Manchester and United is a nice club.

"In terms of the football you want to play as much as possible. But also you think in terms of: 'How do I see myself? How do I fit into the team?' And in those terms I feel good. I feel that I am in a good place."
