maribojoc historical background

Maribojoc, a town in Bohol, has a rich historical background that reflects its name and development over the years.

When Jesuit priests arrived in Bohol and brought the cross to Maribojoc, the town was primarily a fishing village. However, when the Jesuits left in 1767, the Maribojoc parish, officially known as "Parroquia de Santa Cruz," was established. The Agustinian Recollect friars took over in 1768.

In 1852, the construction of the Maribojoc Church began. Built on a once swampy land, the church took approximately 20 years of hard work to complete and was finished in 1872. Unlike other churches where the conventos (convents) are located at the side, the Maribojoc Church's convento is situated at the back of the church, offering an unobstructed view of the sea. Adjacent to the church is a flight of stone stairs, built in 1864, adding to the historical charm of the area.

On October 15, 1860, Maribojoc officially became a regular municipality, marking a significant milestone in its development and governance.

With its unique name, historical church, and captivating landmarks, Maribojoc stands as a testament to its rich heritage and serves as a window into the town's past.

Maribojoc's Name Origins: Unveiling the Local Legends

Maribojoc, a town steeped in intriguing history, holds a fascinating tale behind its name. There are two captivating narratives that shed light on the origin of this unique name:

1. The Tree of Maria Buhok: According to local folklore, Maribojoc was named after a tree resembling a pine tree known as "Agoho." Its leaves were described as thicker and firmer, resembling hair. In ancient times, the locals referred to this tree as "Maria Buhok" (Maria's Hair). Over generations, the name evolved into Maribojoc, reflecting the abundance of these trees in the area.

2. Dungguan: Another historical account suggests that the town's original name was "Dungguan," which means "place of anchorage" in the local dialect. This name was derived from the presence of an old port located on the bay's shore, where sailors would land and conduct business with the early settlers. The name "Dungguan" is fitting as Maribojoc is nestled in a bay that offers protection from strong winds.

Both legends intertwine local elements and provide unique insights into Maribojoc's cultural and natural surroundings. Whether you prefer the tale of the Tree of Maria Buhok or the historical significance of Dungguan, these stories add to the allure of Maribojoc's name and reflect the town's rich heritage.

Embrace the mystery and charm of Maribojoc as you delve into its captivating past and explore the beauty of this coastal gem in southwestern Bohol.

BOHOL ISLAND HOPPING TOUR

An island-hopping tour to Balicasag Island and Virgin Island Bohol is an absolute MUST and I can’t recommend this tour enough!

The island hopping tour includes dolphin watching from the boat, snorkeling with sea turtles on Balicasag Island, and a visit to the unique sand bar on Virgin Island Bohol.

I booked my  Bohol Island Hopping Tour  online in advance and this particular trip was very well organized.

Our trip began in the morning when we met our skipper and guide at the meeting point down on Alona Beach.

Balicasag Island boasts glistening white sands and an abundance of marine life just offshore.

You can rent snorkeling equipment from one of the many shacks dotted along Balicasag Beach when you arrive on the boat. A mask and snorkel set costs 150 pesos.

We spent at least two hours snorkeling around the Balicasag reef and swam with about 15 different turtles and countless species of fish. It was a morning that I will never forget!

Virgin Island Bohol is essentially a sandbar in the middle of the ocean which consists of floating seafood kitchens.

You can go up to the boat that had the most appealing seafood and choose whatever you feel like trying such as lobsters, sea urchins, calamari, and fish which they would boil or grill right in front of you.

Apart from that, there isn’t a whole lot to do on Virgin Island Bohol but it’s a  very unique experience I am sure you will enjoy!

LOBOC RIVER CRUISE

The Loboc River Cruise is one of the top-rated tourist spots in Bohol which includes a hearty lunch and a scenic cruise along the mesmerizing Loboc River.

Loboc River is located in the Loboc region which is a 40km drive from Panglao that takes around 1 hour.

I recommend booking a Bohol Countryside Tour which includes the Loboc River Cruise as one of the activities.

It’s a full-day tour from Panglao which also includes a visit to Chocolate Hills, Bilar Man-Made Forest, Tarsier Sanctuary, and Baclayon Church.

INGKUMHAN FALLS

Ingkumhan Falls is one of the  best waterfalls in Bohol and a must-see while you are exploring the island.

Cliff jumps and rope swings are just some of the reasons that make this Bohol tourist attraction one of the top locations to visit!

Ingkumhan Waterfall is located in Dimiao. From Panglao, it’s a 65km drive that takes around 1-hour to reach Ingkumhan Falls and the entrance fee is 30 pesos.

The main set of falls features a flow of water that stretches across a limestone rockface around 10 meters wide and approximately 8 meters tall.

The water fills a huge natural pool at the base of the falls that reminded me of blue Gatorade which I was almost tempted to drink.

There is a rope swing that can be used about halfway up the falls, so you will have to climb up the rock face to reach it.

Surprisingly, the surface of the rock isn’t that slippery and the depth of the pool is around 3 to 4 meters deep so you won’t need to worry about hitting the bottom when you swing.

There is also a 5-meter cliff jump that can be found on the left-hand side of the falls which is a lot of fun!

I visited Ingkumhan Falls on a Sunday and it was very busy with locals and other tourists. Try and time your visit for a weekday if you want to enjoy Ingkumhan Falls without the crowds.

DIMIAO TWIN FALLS

Dimiao Twin Falls, also known as Pahangog Falls, is my favorite Bohol tourist spot! Its Gatorade rock pools and jungle surroundings are irresistibly inviting.

Dimiao Twin Falls is located in Dimiao. From Panglao, it is a 60km drive that takes around 1.5 hours to reach Twin Falls and there is no entrance fee.

Once you arrive at the jump-off point, follow the rocky trail which then leads onto a steep set of concrete stairs with handrails to get down to the falls.

It is an easy to moderate hike that takes no more than 10 minutes to reach the bottom.

Dimiao Falls features a twin set of falls that are around 25 meters tall, flowing down a limestone rock face and filling a large catch basin below.

The turquoise natural-made swimming pool is deep enough in some areas to do some rock jumping but be sure to do a depth check first.

One of the best things to do at Dimiao Twin Falls is to grab a rubber ring for 20 pesos and float around the rock pools. You can even swim up underneath the falls for a free head massage.

In between the two sets of falls are a small sandy islet and a cave that you can also explore.

PANGLAO BEACH

The most famous beach on Panglao Island is without a doubt the touristy Alona Beach. However, if you are looking for an uncrowded and untouched beach I highly recommend visiting Panglao Beach.

Panglao Beach is located on the northern coastline of Panglao. From Alona Beach, it’s a short 20-minute drive to reach Panglao Beach.

The 200 meters long Panglao Beach is a small but dreamlike beach. Fringed with coconut palms and turquoise waters, this is hands down one of the best beaches in Bohol.

The only beachfront hotel is the famous and luxurious  Mithi Resort & Spa which also hosts a small island in front of their shores serving as a wedding ceremony spot.

The little island can be reached by strolling in waist-deep water and you’ll be able to enjoy the views of the coastline along Panglao Beach.

The best time to visit Panglao Beach is during high tide and it’s also a great location to watch the sunset in Panglao.

HINAGDANAN CAVE BOHOL

Hinagdanan Cave is a famed Bohol tourist spot 2023 for its unique beauty.

Hinagdanan Cave is located on the northern coastline of Panglao. From Alona Beach, it’s a short 15-minute drive to reach Hinagdanan Cave and the entrance fee is 50 pesos.

Inside the cavern, you’ll find a large freshwater pool that glows a fluorescent turquoise color and large stalagmite pinnacles hang from the ceiling.

The natural pool is around 3 to 4 meters deep and there is plenty of space for swimming and rock jumping.

Around the edges of the natural pool is quite dry and you can set down your belongings here while you go for a dip.

Though do note that the ground gets quite slippery especially if there are wet kids running around, so please watch your step.

WHITE BEACH PANGLAO

White Beach in Panglao is another beautiful secluded beach with sandy shores and well worth a visit when searching for things to do in Bohol.

White Beach Panglao is a short 10-minute drive from Alona Beach and it is far less crowded if you are wanting some peace and quiet away from all the hype in Alona.

Relax under one of the beach umbrellas, snorkel around the nearby reefs, take a dip in the ocean and simply enjoy the peaceful vibe that White Beach Panglao offers.

MOLAVE CLIFF JUMP

Throwing yourself over the edge of the cliffs at Molave Cliff Diving Resort is one of the most adrenaline-pumping spots in Bohol.

Molave Cliff Diving Resort is located on the northern coastline of Panglao. From Alona Beach, it’s a short 15-minute drive and the entrance fee is 300 pesos (this includes swimming with sardines, and we’ll elaborate here below).

The Molave Cliff Diving Resort features a 5-meter high diving board straight into the clear blue ocean below.

If you are not 100% confident, just ask the lifeguard on duty exactly where to land and watch some other keen jumpers go first.

To exit the water, it’s a 20 to 30-meter swim in shallow waters to a staircase that leads back to the cliff top.

It’s possible to walk across the reef to reach the stairs though it’s rugged in some areas and there is the odd sea urchin.

Best to bring a pair of slip-on waterproof shoes to avoid getting cut up feet.

Once you’ve tired yourself out from all the cliff diving, you can rent a mask and snorkel for 150 pesos and check out the underwater world in Molave Cove.

There are said to be large balls of sardines off the edge of the reef so keep a close eye out for them.

NAPALING SARDINE RUN EXPERIENCE

Another one of the best Bohol tourist spots is Molave Cove Resort, and it’s about swimming with sardines.

Imagine getting up close and personal with these tiny fish as they dance through the ocean right next to you.

This activity is not only a great way to witness the marine life that Bohol has to offer, but it’s also the perfect bonding experience for families and friends.

Needless to say, make sure to pack your GoPro when coming, as this is one of the coolest things you’ll do in Bohol!

MOMO BEACH PANGLAO

Momo Beach is one of my favorite beaches in Bohol and it’s still yet to make an appearance on the radar as another tourist spot.

But for now, I highly recommend stopping at Momo beach for a quick swim while it’s still untouched.

Momo Beach is located on the northern shores of Panglao, a short 15-minute drive from Alona Beach.

I stumbled across Momo Beach on my way to Hinagdanan Cave, so keep an eye out for the signpost on the side of the road.

Momo Beach features a strip of white sandy shores lined with coconut palm trees and a few wooden shacks dotted along the beach.

There was not one other tourist in sight when I visited this little slice of paradise and I enjoyed a refreshing dip in the ocean all to myself.

At one end of Momo beach is a dive resort but other than that there is nothing more than a few small fishing boats along the sand and beautiful turquoise waters await.

MAG ASO FALLS

Mag Aso Falls is one of the island’s natural treasures and a relatively new tourist spot in Bohol 2023.

Gatorade pools and epic cliff jumps are just some of the reasons why you should add Mag Aso Falls to your list of must-see Bohol attractions.

Mag Aso Falls is located in the town of Antequera. To reach Mag Aso Falls it’s approximately 30 minutes drive from Tagbilaran City or a 1-hour drive from Panglao.

Mag Aso Falls entrance fee is 20 pesos and an additional 15 pesos for parking.

There are 197 concrete steps with metal handrails leading down to the falls and it is an easy 5 to 10-minute hike to reach the bottom.

At the halfway mark on the way down to Mag Aso Falls, there is a viewpoint that overlooks the waterfall which makes for a great photo opportunity.

Mag Aso Falls is an 8-meter waterfall that is surrounded by a tropical backdrop of tall trees and wild plants.

Carved out under the waterfall is a natural pool that is particularly inviting to go for a swim due to its milky blue-colored water derived from the limestone rocks in the area.

You can swim over to Mag Aso falls from the outer edges and climb up into the natural jacuzzi pool to experience a head massage under the falls.

There is also a small cave that can be found under the waterfall.

CAMUGAO FALLS

Camugao Falls is one of the  best waterfalls in Bohol.  Although it’s not quite as popular as Can-umantad Falls, it is equally as impressive with its sheer size and irresistible rock pools!

Camugao Falls can be found in Balilihan. From Panglao, it is a 42km drive that takes around 1 hour to reach Camugao Falls.

The entrance fee is 50 pesos and an additional 20 pesos  must be paid for parking also.

It’s no more than a 10 to 15-minute hike to reach the bottom of the cliffs and to where the jungle trail emerges at the base of Camugao Falls.

Camugao Falls is surrounded by a  towering curved cliff face that makes you feel as though you’ve just stepped inside an enormous amphitheater.

To add to the ambiance, lush green plants and vines surround the canyon.

A number of huts and rest areas can be found around the edge of the swimming hole beneath the falls where you can perch up and marvel at the beautiful surroundings.

There are no food and drink options at Camugao Falls so best to pack your own snacks and drinking water if you plan to spend some time at this epic Bohol tourist spot.

KAWASAN FALLS BOHOL

Kawasan Falls is still yet to make a name for itself as one of the most beautiful places in Bohol.

Kawasan Falls is located in the town of Antequera in Bohol. It’s approximately 30 minutes drive from Tagbilaran City or a 1-hour drive from Panglao and there is a small entrance fee of 20 pesos.

Kawasan Falls is not an outrageous waterfall with a heavy flow of water but it’s the jungle surroundings and the nearby Abatan River that make this place so tranquil.

You can enjoy a nice walk through the forest along a jungle trail down to the Abatan River where you can find a few sheltered huts on stilts. A perfect spot to have a picnic with your friends!

Once you have checked out the river, continue on the trail for a few minutes to reach Kawasan Falls.

A trickle of water flows down a tall rock face from the rice terraces on top of the hill and into a small lagoon at the base of the falls. The catch basin is quite shallow and a great spot for a swim to cool off.

SEVILLA TWIN HANGING BRIDGE

The Sipatan Twin Hanging Bridges, also known as the Sevilla Twin Hanging Bridges, are a remarkable sight in Bohol, Philippines.

Suspended 25 meters above the Sipatan River, these bridges offer great views that you’ll love taking photos of.

Originally, the bridge was made of woven bamboo slats and ropes, serving as a key crossing point for locals. Over time, it has been renovated with steel cables for added safety and stability, while retaining its traditional bamboo design.

Located about 31 KM from Tagbilaran City, you can quickly stop here on the way to Bilar Man-Made Forest and the Bohol Tarsier Conservation Area .

So, if you’re planning a trip to Bohol, don’t miss out on a walk across the Sevilla Twin Hanging Bridges!

INAMBACAN CAVE & SPRING

Yet another off-the-beaten-path location is the Inambacan Cave and Spring. Although it’s not yet on the radar of most tourists, it’s definitely worth visiting.

Inambacn Cave and Spring is located in Maribojoc in Bohol. From Panglao, it is a 40km drive that takes around 1 hour to reach Inamabacan Cave.

There is a small ticket office at the entrance to Inambacan Cave and Spring Bohol and the entrance fee is 20 pesos.

Inambacan Spring features a large lagoon and swimming area which is fed by a running freshwater stream.

There are many nooks and crannies to take a dip in the springs which are the perfect opportunity to jump on in and cool off.

The Inambacan Cave itself is a natural cave carved out of the hillside and a man-made pool has been built around it.

You can walk through the knee-deep water into the cave where you can find stalagmite pinnacles hanging from the ceiling.

BOHOL TOURIST SPOTS – FROM ANDA

Cadapdapan rice terraces.

If you thought Bohol was just beaches and waterfalls, think again.

The Cadapdapan Rice Terraces are hands down one of the most beautiful places to see in Bohol and an adventure not to be missed.

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces remind me of the rice fields in Bali with their tiered architecture and vivid green hues.

And on the plus side, there were absolutely no other tourists in sight when I visited these rice fields, unlike the herds of tourists that you’ll encounter in Bali.

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces can be found in the Candijay region. From Anda, i t is a 30km drive that takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Cadapdapan Rice Terraces.

The entrance fee at Cadapdapan Rice Terraces is 50 pesos.

I visited Cadapdapan Rice Terraces early one morning to catch the sunrise at 5:30 am and made it just in time to wander out into these gorgeous rice fields and witness a colorful sunrise as it lit up this remarkable vista.

There is a narrow dirt trail leading right out into the center of the Cadapdapan Rice Terraces and I remember it being so silent and peaceful.

I spent some time just standing amongst the tall rice fields enjoying the sunrise and shooting some photos of a cluster of coconut palms out on the terraces.

I continued along the trail to a nearby hill that is almost perfectly round in shape and resembles something similar to the Chocolate Hills.

This incredible viewpoint not only overlooks the Cadapdapan Rice Terraces but it also boasts extensive views down the valley and to the ocean.

CAN UMANTAD FALLS

Can-umantad Falls in Candijay is the biggest and arguably the  best waterfall in Bohol . Located high in the hills away from the main tourist towns, Can-umantad Falls is an adventure not to be missed!

Can-Umantad Falls is located in the Candijay region. From Anda, it takes approximately 50 minutes and the entrance fee  is 20 pesos.

From the jump-off point, it’s a short 5-minute walk along a clearly marked trail to reach Can-umantad Falls.

The way is made up of dirt trails, stone steps, and wooden bridges that cross the running freshwater stream.

There are a number of rockpools leading up to the main set of falls which are very inviting with their milky blue waters.

This is your first opportunity to take a refreshing dip following the long journey to reach this Bohol tourist spot.

The height of Can-umantad Falls is said to be 60ft making it the tallest waterfall in Bohol.

Its water source originates from the blue and cool water from Pundol Spring in Candapdapan, making its way downstream to the 60ft drop at Can Umantad Falls and into a large basin below.

Swimming under the flow of water to receive a natural head and neck massage is an awesome experience to have at Can-umantad Falls Candijay.

The water is quite shallow on the edges of the catch basin but it becomes deeper the closer you get to the falls.

CANAWA COLD SPRING

The Canawa Cold Spring in Candijay, in my opinion, is the  best cold spring on Bohol island.

It’s a popular spot for the Filipino locals to hang out though you won’t see many tourists here.

Canawa Spring is located in the Candijay region in Bohol. I t takes approximately 50 minutes to drive from Anda to Canawa Cold Spring and the entrance fee is 20 pesos.

There are two main springs at Canawa, one is a man-made pool with concrete walls and a somewhat dam-like structure, and the other is a natural pool that is almost completely surrounded by lush trees.

The natural pool at the back is far more beautiful than the man-made pool that you see when you first arrive.

So don’t be deterred by this concrete section of Canawa Cold Spring, just be sure to keep wandering along to discover the enchanting blue pool at the back.

A long rope stretches from one side of the cold spring to the other, so you can use this as an aid if swimming isn’t your strong point.

There is also a high tree branch above this natural pool that can be climbed and used as a jump-off point into the spring.

BINABAJE HILLS HIKE

Binabaje Hills, in my opinion, is the best hike in Bohol that takes around 1 hour to reach the summit, boasting panoramic views of the island and its coastlines.

Binabaje Hills is located in Alicia, a town in the northeastern region of Bohol island. It’s approximately a 45-minute drive from Anda to Alicia and the cost is 300 pesos for the guide and 50 pesos entrance fee.

Organizing a hike to Binabaje Hills was a bit more of a process compared to other hikes that I have been on, so to make it easier for you I have explained everything you need to know in the full blog post – Click Here to view.

The morning began with a 3 am alarm clock to make the 45-minute drive from my accommodation in Anda to reach Alicia in time to meet the guide Raul who then took us to the trailhead of the hike.

The first 15 minutes of the trail is quite mellow to start with, perfect to warm up the legs at 4 in the morning, but it quickly becomes very steep.

We hopped over small creek crossings, took a couple of water breaks in small huts along the way, and then scrambled up the narrow ridge trail to finally reach the summit of Binabaje Hills.

There is a small hut at the top that marks the highest point of the Binabaje Hills hike and I arrived drowning in sweat.

The sun was still yet to rise so I took a 5-minute break here before continuing to explore the mountaintop area.

The top hut doesn’t offer the best view of the region as it is surrounded by trees and shrubs so our guide Raul showed us another spot to watch the sunrise from.

It was a very hazy morning, unfortunately, so the sunrise wasn’t that spectacular, though the extensive views of the coastline and surrounding mountains were spectacular nonetheless.

We spent around 1 hour at the top of Binabaje Hills taking photos and enjoying the view before heading back down to the base of the mountain.

Safe to say the Binabaje Hills Hike is one of the best Bohol tourist spots worth checking out.

KINAHUGAN FALLS

Kinahugan Falls is one of the most  off-the-beaten-path waterfalls in Bohol. A short five-minute hike along a jungle trail to Kinahugan Falls is a worthy adventure.

Kinahugan Falls is located in Jagna. F rom Anda, it’s s a 37km drive that takes approximately 50 minutes and the entrance is 10 pesos per person.

The trek to Kinahugan Falls from the parking lot takes no more than five minutes down a narrow dirt trail that can be quite slippery so take your time through this section.

When you reach the bottom of the trail it opens up to a flat plateau  surrounded by coconut palms  and a river runs down one side of the valley.

We caught our first glimpse of Kinahugan Waterfall from here and we followed the trail up some large tree roots that act as stairs. This lead us to a viewing platform at the top which was covered in vibrant foliage from the canopy above.

There are actually  two sets of falls at Kinahugan Waterfall boasting mass volumes of water gushing down a rock face into the river below.

Kinahugan Falls isn’t the most ideal spot for a swim as there is quite a lot of water moving around and it did look quite dangerous to be fair.

This location is purely for marveling at and enjoying the scenic jungle  that surrounds Kinahugan Falls.

DANAO ADVENTURE PARK

Danao Adventure Park is another incredible Bohol new tourist spot, a haven for thrill-seekers and nature lovers.

Nestled about 1 hour from the Chocolate Hills, the park boasts one of the longest and tallest zip line in the country, named “sui-slide” and is 200-meter deep and 500-meter long.

When coming, you can expect a day filled with adrenaline-pumping activities. From zip-lining to rappelling, it’s going to be an experience for the books!

The entrance fee is only 25 pesos, but you’ll pay extra for each activity you’ll do, such as the following:

  • Plunge – P700 per person

There is more, but these are the most common and exciting activities you can do!

Danao Adventure Park is not just a place for adrenaline junkies, but also for those who appreciate natural beauty, and I highly recommend coming.

LONOY COLD SPRING

Lonoy Cold Spring is one of the top Bohol attractions and a great spot to spend an hour or two swimming in the man-made pools which are fed by a nearby freshwater stream.

Lonoy Cold Spring is located in Jagna and can be visited on the same day you visit Kinahugan Falls. F rom Anda, it is a 38km drive which takes around 55 minutes and the entrance fee is 20 pesos.

Lonoy Cold Spring is made up of three separate springs that are fed from the runoff of water from the nearby mountains.

The flow of water cascades down the hillside into each man-made pool and meets the freshwater stream at the bottom.

It’s a popular location for the locals to hang out on weekends and you won’t find too many tourists here.

They are always very friendly and welcoming to foreigners so take the time to get to know them and learn more about the local way of life here in Bohol.

Snacks and drinks are also available for purchase from the little shop next to the springs.

The water inside Lon oy Cold Spring is no more than six feet deep and it’s a great spot to cool off while listening to the sounds of the surrounding forested area.

LAMANOK ISLAND & MANGROVE BOARDWALK

Lamanok Island, also spelled Lamanoc, is said to be one of the most mysterious places to go in Bohol.

Lamanok has a long history of being a sacred place for priests and healers who would make offerings to nature spirits on the island and some people claim to have seen or heard paranormal activity on Lamanoc.

Uncover the island’s rich heritage on the Lamanok Island Mystic Experience Tour which costs around 300 pesos and includes a guide, entrance fees, and a boat trip. You can book a Lamanok Island Tour via your accommodation in Anda.

Apart from the spookiness of Lamanok, you can enjoy a half-day of fun activities such as island hopping, kayaking, hiking, and caving.

CABAGNOW CAVE POOL

Mother Nature has carved over twenty major cave pools in Anda and  Cabagnow Cave Pool is arguably the biggest, the best, and the most beautiful out of them all.

I highly recommend adding Cabagnow Cave Pool to your list of must-visit tourist spots in Bohol.

From the main town in Anda, Cabagnow Cave Pool is a 5-minute drive. The entrance fee is 50 pesos and the parking fee is 20 pesos.

Follow the dirt trail from the parking lot to Cabagnow Cave Pool which is clearly marked and it takes no more than 10 minutes to walk.

About 2 minutes in, I came across an intersection and a sign that read  ‘Tibaw Cave Pool’  with an arrow pointing to the left which leads down to another epic cave pool. I decided to check this one out first before heading over to Cabagnow Cave Pool.

This unique cenote / sinkhole / cave pool is surrounded by coral rock and  filled with fresh water  which is fed from the nearby mountains.

To enter the deep blue-colored pool you can either walk across the rocks and slip in on the shallow side or if you’re keen on a jump there is a 2-meter cliff jump on the opposite side of the pool.

The depth of the water is around 3 meters deep so you won’t have to worry about hitting the bottom if you decide to do some cliff jumping.

I continued on to find Cabagnow Cave Pool which is only a 5-minute walk from Tibaw Cave Pool.

The Cabagnow Cave Pool is much larger but unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to enter the pool without the ladder that used to be in place.

It’s a 5-meter drop into the sinkhole so there is no way of getting out once you’re down in the water.

BLUE HEAVEN VIEWPOINT ANDA

The Blue Heaven Viewpoint Anda is the highest peak on the Anda Peninsula which offers panoramic views of Bohol Island and its coastlines.

I visited Blue Heaven Viewpoint Anda one afternoon to watch the sunset and it was one of the highlights of my Bohol trip.

Blue Heaven Viewpoint is approximately a 20-minute drive inland from Anda town center and the entrance is free.

It’s very easy to find this viewpoint with the use of Google maps and when you arrive at the jump-off point on the side of the main road, it’s a short 2-minute walk along a dirt trail to the top of the hill.

There is a small sheltered hut at the summit offering extensive views of the Anda region and its beaches. On a clear day, you can see the neighboring islands of Camiguin and Surigao.

Blue Heaven Viewpoint Anda, in my opinion, is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Bohol.

QUINALE BEACH ANDA

Quinale Beach was one of my favorite beaches to explore while I was in Anda and coincidently, it’s dubbed the best beach in Bohol.

Quinale Beach Anda is most famed for its long stretch of white soft sands, crystal clear waters, palm tree fringed shores, beach bars, and open-style huts that are dotted along the coastline.

Not a bad spot to spend a few hours if you ask me!

The best time to visit Quinale Beach is during high tide to see its true beauty. Visiting at low tide is also okay but there may be a lot of seaweed grass along the shores.

There are many spots to perch up under the shade of a coconut palm or under the sun to work on that summer tan.

Quinale Beach is not to be missed on your list of must-see Bohol tourist spots.

CATERES CAVE POOL

Cateres Cave Pool is one of the many epic cave pools in Anda and a real hidden treasure.

From the town center of Anda, it is approximately a 5-minute drive to reach Cateres Cave Pool.

Follow Dapdap Beach Road right to the end till you come to a closed-off gate and this is the jump-off point.

The trail is narrow and overgrown but I assure you it emerges at the Cateres Cave Pool. It’s a short 2-minute walk from the jump-off point and there is no entrance fee.

When I arrived there was a group of teens hanging out, listening to music, and drinking rum. They were super friendly and I sat down and chatted with them for a while.

The cave pool is tucked away under the cliffs and stalagmite pinnacles hang from the ceiling. I couldn’t resist jumping into the turquoise lagoon to cool off.

Cateres Cave Pool is not as popular as Cabagnow Cave Pool and chances are you won’t see any other tourists here.

CANUBA BEACH

Canuba Beach is one of the most beautiful yet underrated beaches in Bohol.

White sands, beach shacks, and a palm tree-fringed shoreline make this location a must-see Bohol tourist attraction.

See More → Best Things To Do In Cebu

Canuba Beach can be found in the Jagna region. From Anda, it is approximately a 50-minute drive to reach Can-uba Beach.

When we visited Canuba Beach we were literally the only two people along the entire coastline. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and I was in complete awe of the sheer beauty of this place.

If you’re looking for an uncrowded beach to spend some time during your Bohol trip, head over to Canuba Beach and you will find exactly that!

WHITE BEACH ANDA

White Beach in Anda is hands down one of the best beaches in Bohol.

I visited White Beach for sunset one afternoon and explored the white sands, swam in the shallow crystalline waters, and hung out underneath the coconut palms.

From the town center in Anda, it is a short 5-minute drive to White Beach. You can ride your scooter all the way down to Anda White Beach Resort and park in the small parking lot.

From the jump-off point, follow the dirt trail on the right-hand side of the resort to get down to the beach.

My favorite part about White Beach Anda is the cluster of palm trees that reside on the soft sands.

I spent some time taking photos here before running into the ocean to cool off after a long day of adventures. The crystal clear waters here are to die for!

Once again there were no other tourists in sight, just a bunch of local kids running around on the beach, kicking sand and having an absolute blast. Ah, the simple things!

COMBENTO CAVE POOL

After Cabagnow Cave Pool, Combento Cave Pool in Anda is my second favorite cave pool in the region and a must-visit while you’re exploring Bohol.

From the town center of Anda, it is approximately a 5-minute drive to reach Combento Cave Pool. You’ll find a small parking lot at the jump-off point and there is an entrance fee of 25 pesos.

A coconut palm tree forest welcomes you as you enter past the ticket office and the Combento Cave is located in the back corner of the property. The locals will be sure to point it out to you.

A set of concrete stairs with bamboo hand railings leads the way through a narrow entrance and opens up into a large dome-like cave with a freshwater lagoon inside.

The crystalline water inside the Combento Cave is incredibly transparent with a hint of blue. It’s waist-deep and a great spot for a refreshing dip.

The cave is quite dark inside and only natural light fills the dome at certain times of the day.

You don’t need much time to check out the Combento Cave but you could quite easily spend a couple of hours swimming in the lagoons and chilling out under the canopy of the coconut palm forest.

ALICIA PANORAMIC PARK

Last but not least in this Bohol tourist spots guide is the Alicia Panoramic Park near Anda.

Alicia Panoramic Park is a hill that you can hike and that’ll get you to some of the best views of Bohol.

The hike lasts between 1 and 2 hours, and the last part is particularly steep, so I do not recommend coming during the rainy season.

Also, getting here is a journey and, despite taking about 1 hour from Poblacion, Anda, you can expect rough roads that aren’t easy to drive on. If you still decide to come, I highly recommend getting travel insurance – safety first!

To hike the Alicia Panoramic Park, you’ll have to get a guide, and you can contact Kuyang Tour Guide on Facebook . You can expect to pay around 300 pesos or 500 if you decide to camp overnight.

All in all, while it’s far from an easy hike, the views are worth it and I suggest you come if you have some time left after visiting other Bohol tourist spots!

ARRIVING IN BOHOL

If you are arriving on the island by ferry, see below for the best ways to get from Tagbilaran Port to Panglao and from Tagbilaran Port to Anda.

Tagbilaran Port to Panglao (45 Minutes)

From Tagbilaran to Panglao, you have the option of taking a shared minivan, private taxi, public bus, or tricycle.

TRICYCLE + BUS:

The cheapest option is to take a short tricycle from Tagbilaran Port to Dao Bus Terminal in Tagbilaran City for 30 Pesos ($1.50).

From there you can take the public bus to Alona Beach in Panglao (the main tourist hub in Panglao) which costs around 50 – 100 Pesos ($2.50 – $5).

SHARED MINIVAN:

A shared minivan transfer from Tagbilaran Port to the doorstep of your hotel in Panglao is another great option for only 300 Pesos ($15).

Tricycle rides from Tagbilaran to Panglao cost around 200 – 300 Pesos ($10 – $15) depending on your bartering skills.

I don’t recommend this option because long rides on a tricycle are very uncomfortable.

PRIVATE TAXI:

A private taxi from Tagbilaran to Panglao costs around 700 Pesos ($35).

Tagbilaran Port to Anda (3 Hours)

From Tagbilaran Port to Anda, you have the option of taking a private taxi, public bus, or shared minivan.

The cheapest option is to take a tricycle from Tagbilaran Port to the Dao Bus terminal in Tagbilaran City for 30 Pesos.

From there you can take the public bus to Anda which costs around 110 Pesos.

Minivans are another cheap option to reach Anda for as little as 120 Pesos though it can get quite claustrophobic as they try to fit as many people in the vans as possible.

A private taxi from Tagbilaran to Anda costs around 3000 Pesos.

Behold Bohol

Situated in the southwestern coast of Bohol is the municipality of Maribojoc. It was probably named after the pinelike tree (Agoho), the leaves of which look like hairs. This tree is locally known as “maribojoc”. But the original name of the municipality is said to be Dungguan, which means “a place of anchorage”.

It was an appropriate name because the town is on a little cove which is fairly sheltered from strong winds. Maribojoc was declared a parish in 1767. It became a regular municipality on October 15,1860. In 1879, it was a thriving town with a population of 18,200.

Top things to do in Maribojoc

Visit Santa Cruz Parish Church

Maribojoc Church, also known as Santa Cruz Parish Church or Holy Cross Parish Church, was a Roman Catholic Church in the municipality of Maribojoc, Bohol, Philippines, under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tagbilaran. The parish was first established by the Jesuits in 1767 or 1768 with Father Juan Soriano, SJ as its first parish priest. The Augustinian Recollects later administered the community until 1898.

The church was built in 1852 under Father Manuel Plaza and completed in 1872. In 2005, it was designated by the diocese as the Diocesan Shrine of San Vicente Ferrer. It was also declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines and a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. When a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Bohol and other parts of Central Visayas in 2013, the entire building crumbled to the ground, leaving only the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus standing.

Visit the Maribojoc Uplifted Marine Terrace

The uplifted marine terraces in Maribojoc is an extraordinary geological phenomenon caused by a strong magnitude 7.2 earthquake that shook the island on October 15, 2013. At the area of the coast near Punta Cruz Watchtower, the coastal terrace was raised approximately 1.5 meters vertically and the coastline shifted 50 meters seaward. Due to this, a coastal area of at least 137 hectares emerged from underwater and the sea’s high tide mark shifted 50-meters seawards from its position before the earthquake. The formerly beach area was replaced with area of dead corals and marine life.

Go to Punta Cruz Watchtower

Punta Cruz Watchtower is a triangular structure located at barangay Punta Cruz in Maribojoc. The tower oversees the seas South of Bohol. It was built as a look-out post against pirates and Muslim marauders.

Visiting the Magnificent Punta Cruz Watchtower in Maribojoc Bohol

Punta Cruz Historical Watchtower

During our recent visit to Bohol, courtesy of the Department of Tourism, one of the few heritage sites we visited was the Punta Cruz Watchtower in Maribohoc, Bohol.

Punta Cruz Watchtower

The first time I looked at this watchtower, I was mesmerized by its beauty immediately. Upon the enclosed park, I was taken back in time. I felt like I was transported back to the colonial days. Also, I noticed something engraved on its historical wall. It was a message written in Spanish.

Punta Cruz Watchtower Incription photo by Ric Obedencio via Wikipedia

The translation goes like this:

“Castillo De San Vicente Ferrer in this Punta Cruz, whose title and tree of the Holy Cross from the conquest of the Spaniards until now, is venerated in this town of Malabojoc, with the veneration of the Holy via crucis year 1796.”

Amazing right? I can’t believe that this tower is still standing after so many years.

Bohol prides itself with its natural beauty. In fact, it’s one of the most visited places in the Philippines. However, an unfortunate event damaged the beautiful island last year. It was hit by a devastating earthquake and many establishments are destroyed. As a result, a lot of people are discouraged to visit. They believe that the island has lost its natural beauty and all that’s left are memories of the tragedy. Well, they are wrong! In my recent trip to the island, I witnessed the beauty of this historical watchtower in Punta Cruz.

This are used to be underwater before the 2013 earthquake

The Punta Cruz Watchtower is one of a kind. It’s the only perfect isosceles triangle tower in the Philippines. It’s located in the western tip of Maribojoc, Bohol, and it’s one of the most attractive historical structures in the country. Despite taking severe damage from the 2013 earthquake, this ancient watchtower has never lost its beauty.

According to historians, this tower was built to defend the place from Moro pirates based in the south. In fact, the cross planted there was intended to scare them off. And when I checked the windows on top, I saw that it was a look-out post. Looking at the windows, I can see Cebu, Siquijor, and some islands in Mindanao.

Sunset from the Punta Cruz Watchtower Viewdeck

If you’re planning to go there, I suggest that you go to the Tagbilaran Integrated Bus Terminal and take the bus that goes to Tubigon. The bus will pass along Punta Cruz, so just tell the driver to drop you there. Once you reach Punta Cruz, you must walk about 500 meters to get the watchtower.

Also, I recommend that you practice speaking Boholano. Although people in Maribojoc can understand English and Filipino, their primary language is Boholano. Learning a few basic phrases won’t hurt you, right? In fact, it can make your trip easier.

I love visiting Watchtowers. And in all my travels, this watchtower is one of the most memorable places I’ve seen. If my schedule and budget allow me, I’ll go there again.

1. Visit the Chocolate Hills

Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines

No trip to Bohol is complete without seeing this iconic landmark, which is even featured in the local Philippine Peso currency . Bohol's claim to fame is the unique geological formation of over 1000 cone-shaped hills that change in color depending on the season – the  Chocolate Hills . You can view the hills from the Chocolate Hills Complex when you book Chocolate Hills tours . There’s a viewing deck with a stunning 360° view of the cone-shaped hills.

These giant mounds of chocolate-colored earth in the dry season turn green during the wet season. The hills are spread out on a 50-square kilometer land and vary in size.

  • Book  Chocolate Hills ATV tours
  • Brush up on Chocolate hills facts

According to local legends, the hills were created by two giants who got into a fight and threw boulders and rocks at each other. The mess they left after their battle is said to eventually lead to the formation of the hills that we know today. Another story says that the hills are tears of a heartbroken giant who fell in love with a mortal.

The third story, quite a funny one, is about a giant carabao that plagued the town and ate all the crops. The townspeople then fed it their spoiled food. When the carabao defecated, they dried up to become the hills.

In reality, the Chocolate Hills are conical karst hills that were formed by the uplift of coral deposits combined with rainwater and erosion. It's considered to be an extraordinary example of karst topography and is the main highlight of most Bohol excursions .

3. explore hinagdanan cave         .

Hinagdanan Cave features a pool of clear water at the bottom

The Hinagdanan Cave, one of the most beautiful caves in the Philippines , features a pool of clear water at the bottom. You can swim here under the mesmerizing sight of stalactites and stalagmites.

The word "hinagdanan" means laddered in Cebuano. This now-famous Bohol tourist destination is said to have been accidentally discovered by a farmer who built a ladder to access the cave, thus the name. The cave also holds historical significance as it was once used by locals to hide during World War II.

Only one person at a time can enter the 100-meter-long cave during a trip to Panglao Island. Be careful when traversing the trails, as they can get slippery because of the moisture inside the cave. Once you get inside, you will be treated to the breathtaking site of a freshwater lagoon that's about 10-12 meters deep.

The light filters through the nearby cave entrance, filling the whole area with a relaxing and otherworldly glow. It is not like any swim you've had before! Once you're done taking a dip, you can also check out the souvenir shops right outside the cave.

One of Bohol’s most beautiful natural attractions is the Loboc River . This beautiful river is a wonder of nature that has been preserved through the combined efforts of the local authorities and the residents. The scenic river that runs through multiple towns in Bohol is framed with lush tropical trees, perfect for winding down in the afternoon after your countryside tour.

The most popular activity here is the  Loboc River Cruise tour , where tourists board a floating restaurant. The boat cruise will drift along the serene 1.5km long river while you feast on a Filipino lunch buffet.

Guests onboard the boat will be serenaded by a local band until they reach the end of the river at Busay Falls. Here, you will be treated to a spectacular cultural show of song and dance. Feel free to dance with the locals; it will be the highlight of your day!

For a different (and more private) experience, you may try a Bohol river cruise and paddleboarding adventure, which is fast becoming a hit for those who want to explore the river at their own pace.

This activity is a great way to take in the beauty of the Loboc River without the crowd. It's also perfect for beginners and non-swimmers.

Tarsiers are nocturnal and considered the smallest primates in the world

Like the Chocolate Hills, the tarsiers and their big eyes are synonymous with Bohol as well. These nocturnal creatures are considered to be one of the smallest primates in the world.

They grow to be just 15 centimeters long at most, and they're just so cute! Tarsiers can also be found in other Philippine destinations like Samar, Leyte, and parts of Mindanao. But Bohol is known for its tarsier sanctuary tours that help preserve and raise awareness about these species.

If it's your first time in Bohol, don't miss a visit to the Tarsier Conservation Area in Loboc or the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella. These tarsier sanctuaries allow tourists not just to see these small creatures up close, but also to learn more about them. For the complete experience, you can join  Bohol countryside tours  that combine other top Bohol tourist tourist attractions with this stop.

When visiting the tarsiers, remember that they are nocturnal and are asleep during the day. You'll find them perched on branches around the sanctuaries. Make sure to keep the noise down because they're sensitive to sound.

Taking their photos is fine, but keep the flash turned off not to wake them up. Touching them is also a no-no because it will stress them out.

6. explore anda, bohol's beaches and caves .

Cabagnow Cave Pool, locally known as Kabagno Cave, is famours for its crystal clear waters

Anda Beach offers a more relaxing tropical escape compared to Panglao Island's famous Alona Beach. Aside from the beach, the town of Anda also offers other natural attractions like blue cave pools. You can explore these and other beaches in the area with a full-day tour of Anda to make the most of your time.

This natural cave pool, locally known as Kabagno Cave, has been gaining popularity because of its crystal clear waters that you can plunge into from its opening. The cool waters are around 20-25 feet deep and are popular with cliff divers.

Another enchanting natural cave pool not to be missed in Anda, Bohol. It has a more shallow pool with just 4-5 feet deep water. The rock formations of the cave look like a chandelier that's why it's named after the word "kumbento" or convent.

7. Go on a Bohol Island-Hopping Tour and See Bohol’s Marine Life

Fish and brown rice ate Bohol Bee Farm Resort

With all the exploration you'll be doing around Bohol, you're sure to get hungry! Contrary to the name of this attraction, the bees aren't the real stars here; it's the food. The Bohol Bee Farm is usually included in day tours in Panglao Island and offers organic food that's tastefully prepared by its head chef and owner, Vicky Wallace. It's also one of the  best restaurants in Bohol .

The Bohol Bee Farm is a private resort that has become a popular stop for a Panglao trip before heading to Panglao Island's Alona Beach. It's perched on a cliff where guests are treated to a relaxing sea view as you dine alfresco. Book Bohol Bee Farm tours so you can explore the property hassle-free.

Its hand-carved dining set with amazing treats (like the appetizer of squash bread with impressive spreads) is the real deal. And yes, the flowers on your plate are meant to be eaten! Other must-tries are their fresh salads, soups, and seafood dishes.

Don't miss a visit to The Buzzz Ice Cream just right outside the restaurant. They offer unique flavors of ice cream like malunggay, tomato, spicy ginger, and coconut that are served on a cone made from dried cassava. You can also buy organic food products as souvenirs in their shop, including honey!

10. visit the historic churches of bohol .

Facade of the Baclayon Church in Bohol, Philippines

Go on an excursion and see some of the heritage churches in Bohol. You'll be able to catch a glimpse of how the locals devote their time during prayer. And learn about the remnants of the historical past through its architecture. Here are some of the must-see Bohol churches:

This is the oldest church in all of Asia and is a part of a Bohol countryside tour . It's impossible to proceed in the vein of historical churches without visiting this. The devastating earthquake of recent years damaged the original church, but through momentous efforts, the entire church has been rebuilt.

Officially called the Church of the Immaculate Concepcion, the church also has a museum with some religious artifacts. It's also pretty accessible since it's an easy drive from the Blood Compact site.

Officially named the Church of San Pedro, this church is the second oldest in the province. If you're looking for something like the Sistine Chapel, this is it — the church has excellent exteriors, complete with a heavenly scene painted on its ceiling! It's often included in a day trip in Bohol.

Also known as Our Lady of the Assumption, this church was built in 1697 and is dubbed by The National Historical Commission as a National Historic Landmark. Its neoclassical exteriors perfectly complement its stunning interiors, making it a must-visit church included in a Panglao tour.

The locals know this church as Panglao Church.  It's well-known for its ceiling paintings and marble floors. It's a church included in a sightseeing activity in Panglao.

One of the largest and most-frequented churches in Bohol, the Cathedral is made of ancient coral stone. It has undergone some facelifts, but you’ll still see the original pieces that are touchstones to the country’s religious history.

11. Learn History at the Blood Compact Shrine

The Blood Compact Shrine depicts Sikatuna and Legazpi, as the former pledged allegiance to the latter

If you want to see more of Bohol’s colonial past, make sure to drop by this next tourist attraction. The Sandugo or Blood Compact Shrine monument found in Bo-ol district of Tagbilaran City is a landmark at the site of the first international treaty of friendship between Spaniards and Filipinos. It's a popular attraction included in a Bohol day trip.

This place represents a junction in our history that pretty much led to us being who we are now. The Blood Compact Shrine depicts Sikatuna and Legazpi at the famed "Sandugo" moment, as the former pledged allegiance to the latter. The National Artist makes it for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva.

It is also an easy trip since it's just along the main roads you'll pass as you go around the city. You can hail a tricycle from the town proper and ride a bus from the Dao terminal. Ride the bus that goes through Barangay Bo-ol.

If you’re not fond of commuting and you want to see the Sandugo Shrine along with other major tourist spots, you can join this fun sightseeing activity in Bohol.

You can also participate in a combination tour that explores the best of Panglao historical and natural sites in a day! Be ready to snap photos of this important event in history.

Tigbao Hanging Bridge is made of woven bamboo straps and stretches over a gently flowing river

You’ve crossed hanging bridges, but have you crossed one made entirely out of bamboo? This well-known hanging bridge often included in a sightseeing trip in Bohol is made of woven bamboo straps and stretches over a gently flowing river.

The locals know it as Tigbao Hanging Bridge. There's an entrance fee, but you get free access to the tourist spot if you join a sightseeing tour in Bohol as it's mostly included in the itinerary.

The Tigbao Hanging Bridge is located in Sevilla, Bohol. It's suspended 83 feet above the Loboc River and is the primary connection between two barangays in the town.

Crossing it might scare you at first, especially if you have a fear of heights. But fear not! It's safe and a unique way to get a whole perspective of the Loboc River.

To ease your mind about its structural integrity, the bridge has a set of cables that ensure its stability. Your reward for braving the heights and the wobbling? A souvenir shop at the other end.

It's pretty touristy, but hey, at least there's something! Whether you're a local finding new things to do, or you're a tourist wanting to experience everything extraordinary in Bohol, this is a must-add in your to-do list

13. Take photos at Bilar Man-Made Forest

Guy passing through the Bilar Man-Made Forest in a motorcycle

It was a successful project, as many laborers, government employees, locals, and even students helped each other plant the seedlings. The project covers 20,000 hectares in the towns of Loboc, Batuan, Carmen, Valencia, Jagna, Sierra Bullones, and more.

The Bilar Man-Made Forest often included in Bohol countryside tours  is great for a slow walk down a natural tunnel formed by the canopies of well-spaced trees. It's a tranquil place, so it's great if you're looking for a short pit stop before your next Bohol adventure, the forest is just north of it.

It has a stretch of two kilometers and is made with white and red mahogany trees. This tourist destination is often packaged with other tourist spots such as Chocolate Hills in a guided sightseeing excursion in Bohol. It’s also combined with nearby attractions such as this sightseeing tour with Loboc River Cruise.

View of the Dimiao and Pahangog Twin Falls in Bohol, Philippines

Relax and unwind at Bohol’s famous waterfalls. Take a dip in these gorgeous waterfalls accessible by public transportation or by joining a Bohol waterfalls escapade.

20 kilometers from Tagbilaran and found in the forest of Barangay Can-omay are hidden waterfalls called Mag-Aso Falls, named after ‘aso’ or smoke due to the drizzles resembling smoke that is formed from the strong drop of water.

Out of 20 waterfalls in Bohol, this waterfall is the most accessible from the capital Tagbilaran City and is also less crowded, as it is still not yet commercialized. It’s a must-try half-day tour in Bohol.

Just around an hour’s drive from Alona Beach is one of the most enchanting spots of nature anywhere in the region. The falls themselves are sparkling clean! Take a dip in its turquoise waters and admire the scenic view it offers. The place is quite popular, so expect some company while you’re here.

This waterfall is located at Balilihan, Bohol. It’s one of the highly-recommended waterfalls in the province because of its amphitheater-like cascading of waters. You can swim and laze around the waters for as long as you like!

There's also a Kawasan Falls in Bohol and not just the popular one in Cebu . This gorgeous waterfall has a high drop of 20 meters and is blessed with clean and aquamarine waters. The good news is it's included in most waterfalls tours in Bohol.

15. have fun at a butterfly garden   .

Butterfly from Bohol's Butterfly Sanctuary

The Center has several facilities that would take more than an afternoon to cover. Its main one is the Butterfly Garden, where over 50 species of butterflies flutter around freely. Seats and pathways are available for strolling around or idly watching them as they fly by.

Butterflies who are inbred can be visited in the Butterfly Enclosure, which has a waterfall and caterpillar feeding displays as well. Guests can also take a walk at the Nature Trail, located on a small hill where tropical plants, birds, and other small wildlife are also present.

Butterfly and insect collections are displayed in the Visitor Center, where the restaurant is located.

You can reach this habitat conservation center along the highway of Carmen Town. Colored flags serve as the signage to the entrance of the Center, which is roughly 40 kilometers away from Tagbilaran City, the capital of Bohol.

Guests are required to pay an entrance fee before entering the vicinity. But you can get in for free if you join Bohol tours that include this tourist spot in the itinerary.

Maribojoc and the Punta Cruz Watchtower

A scenic relic from the Spanish era, the Punta Cruz Watchtower has ardently observed the town of Maribojoc and the surrounding areas in its centuries of existence, serving as a landmark linking the town's present to its past.

Maribojoc and the Punta Cruz Watchtower

Maribojoc Town was a fishing village when the Jesuit priests Juan de Torres and Gabriel Sanchez landed in Baclayon in 1595. The Maribojoc parish, officially known as "Parroquía de Santa Cruz," was founded in 1767 when the Jesuits left Maribojoc. The town was one of the nine big villages founded by the Augustinian Recollect friars when they took over in 1768. It was during the time of the Recollects that the foundation of the Maribojoc church was laid in 1798 on what was once a swampy land and was finished in 1816. At the back of the church is a flight of stone stairs built in 1864. Earlier, in 1796, the Punta Cruz watchtower was built as a lookout against marauding pirates.

Punta Cruz Watchtower

The Punta Cruz Watchtower is a curious triangular watchtower which oversees the seas south of Bohol. From its windows at the top you can see Cebu, Siquijor, and Mindanao. The Spanish constructed it in 1796 as a lookout post against pirates and Muslim marauders who at that time where a plague to the people of Bohol.

Remnants of similar triangular towers can be found in a number of other places along the coast of Bohol, such as Panglao, Dauis, Loay, and on Pamilacan island, but this tower is the most intact.

Today the Punta Cruz watch tower still provides an excellent view. The site now offers a small stall for buying drinks and snacks and makes a good spot for a picnic and a swim, although you'll have to watch out when you climb on the very sharp rocks.

How to get there

A connecting flight to Tagbilaran is available every day and takes an hour or so.  By boat it would take an entire day.  From the Tagbilaran Integrated Bus Terminal in Dao, buses going to Tubigon can drop you off at Punta Cruz, then it is about 500 meters by foot to the watchtower.

Maribojoc in Bohol faces new cycle of destruction, renewal

DESTROYED. After serving the Catholic faithful of Maribojoc, Bohol, since the disastrous 2013 quake, this alternate church was reduced to ruins by Typhoon Odette.

Reyn Barnido still remembers weeping over the 2013 Bohol quake , that reduced Maribojoc town’s Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) Parish Church, where he and his siblings and cousins attended masses as children.

The church was finally reopened for masses less than a week ago. Barnido, who grew up to become a religious brother and executive director of Duyog Marawi, an ecumenical group that bridges peoples of various faiths, attended the first of the nine Christmas dawn masses on Thursday, December 16.

“The family came here to attend the Rededication of the Church last December 12, 2021,” Barnido, who goes by the name Rey Barnes on Facebook, told Rappler.

Just after Mass, he posted photos of the clan with their famous relative, former Cabinet secretary Leoncio “Jun” Evasco, the Presidential Adviser on Streamlining of Government Processes, who left the island soon after breakfast.

Several hours later, Typhoon Odette swept through the province with its fifth and sixth landfalls in the early evening of December 16.

Barnido started a running commentary on his Facebook page, saying the wind sounded like a jet zooming too close to their family house.

He described the “explosive” sounds of tin roofs and other building parts slamming into other structures as their sturdy home shook from winds that roared through at 175 km/h as of 11 pm on Thursday, with gustiness of up to 240 km/h.

“Nanaghoy ang hangin, ” he said of the howling wind, using the Boholano word for cries of lamentation.

The morning after Odette’s onslaught, Barnido saw the newly rebuilt church intact. But the typhoon had reduced to rubble the “alternate church” used by parishioners since 2013.

At the town port, he saw the debris of homes in the water, with families coming back from evacuation to salvage anything of value.

“Families still surviving from the earthquake to the pandemic now have to start from scratch again,” said Barnido. “Good thing they have been scheduled for relocation from this danger zone.”

As of the time of writing, the town government still has to release data on lives lost and damage to property.

Barnido, however, told Rappler, “people here are saying that this is worse than the earthquake. ”

“It’s very understandable, The earthquake affected only a portion of this island-province. Odette spared no one on the island. The earthquake didn’t damage crops and fish cages. Odette destroyed all that,” he explained.

Barnido added:“When the earthquake happened, there was still food available since gardens and farms were safe. Now, we even have a problem looking for ulam. The market is empty.”

“Maribojoc has survived and bounced back from a 7.2 earthquake, he added. “Now it has to gather its spirit and its forces to bounce back from this disaster.”
