Important disclaimer : I am not an expert on 356 tools! I have collected information from multiple sources, including my own observations, and try to present it on this site in a coherent manner. There will always be variations and differences from what is presented here. This site should be considered a work in progress, and not a definitive statement on what is correct for 356 tool kits. Use this site at your own risk, and please tell me if you find errors or can contribute to the site.

Hazet "roundbox" toolkits/ Hazet Tourist toolkits

Beginning around 1950, Hazet (the producer of many of the individual 356 tool kit items) began producing a tool kit that was round in shape and fit onto the spare tire in the trunk of Volkswagen Beetles, Porsche 356, and other cars. There are two main varieties of this so-called "roundbox" toolkit: one has the VW symbol embossed on the cover, the other has a Hazet logo with the name "Tourist" beneath. I have been told by a knowledgeable tool enthusiast that the VW version was marketed through the VW dealer system, while the Tourist version was available through normal Hazet channels.

These kits are complementary to the original kit, although there is some overlap. They are generally of equivalent quality (notable exception - look at the generator pulley wrench).

Summary of versions:

hazet tourist tool kit

I have seen five variations of this basic kit. By examining the case by itself, you can determine which of these five variations it is. The earliest kit had no Phillips screwdriver (located between the handles of the small pliers), so there should be no clips in that location. The next variety has clips for holding the Phillips screwdriver. Around 1956, a third variety appeared: this one had a sprayed on flocking on the interior rather than a felt pad. The flocking covered the clips as well as the flat surface - the felt pad covered only the flat area. Around this time the 21mm/36mm box wrench replaced the 36mm box wrench, but the decal didn't reflect this difference immediately. Sometime around 1959 or 1960, a fourth wrench was added to the kit. The clip that holds the wrenches will have 4 spaces in this kind of kit. To make space, the medium screwdriver was moved to between the handles of the large pliers. I call this kit "deluxe" (my term only - not official!) because it had the most tools of this style box - 13. Shortly after this time, the T-handle socket was dropped from the kit, and the medium screwdriver was returned to its previous position.

It should be noted that there were variations in the tools also. Plating, part numbers, and sizes went through their own evolution as well.

This "truth table" should enable you to determine the version and approximate vintage of any standard VW or Tourist tool box:

Detailed contents:

From a couple of sites on the internet, I was able to make the following chart of these tool kits:

circa 1955/56 "Tourist" toolkit:

hazet tourist tool kit

Other Varieties:

hazet tourist tool kit

It has the same small wrenches, T-handle, large pliers, lugwrench and sparkplug socket as the other kits, but also has a pair of 27mm wrenches (likely for front wheel bearings on early VW and Porsche 356), a large T-handle socket (oil pressure sender on a VW or Porsche 356?), and a feeler gauge!

This kit is probably better in a 356 since there is less overlap with the factory kit (which was significantly better than the VW kit of the era).

Just to confuse people, Hazet used the standard decal in it. The clips are completely different, so you would have a tough time organizing tools as suggested by the decal...

Guide to Hazet RoundBox Toolkits – with Original Ads

Hazet tools have always been synonymous with German auto manufacturers and Volkswagen is no exception. Here we take a look at how to date a Roundbox toolkit into 4 main date groups and then show some fantastic period ads showing how Hazet and VW worked together through the 50’s and 60’s through the medium of official Volkswagen advertising materials.

BusandCamper’s Roundbox Dating Guide

Dating a roundbox can be interesting and challenging, but there are several main changes that are quickly spotted so you can make a successful match, for example;

The earliest years

In the early 1950’s Hazet started making a round shaped toolbox that would neatly clip into the spare wheel of a VW Beetle. The earliest version of the tool kit was made for 16 inch wheels and this changed to for 15 inch wheels and other VW models – such as the VW 1500 or type 3. Hazet also made their own branded version – so whilst the Volkswagen roundbox toolkit was embossed with a huge VW the Hazet item was branded as Tourist and sold outside of the VW empire.

Early Hazet roundbox ad

The mid to late 50’s flocking and double box era

Around 1955 Hazet introduced an 814 Phillips stubby screwdriver between the pliers. Followed quite quickly in approx 1956 / 1957 with the inside tool lining now a lighter blue spray on flocking rather than a felt pad. At the time of the flocking change they introduced a 21mm box wrench to the other end of the 36mm wrench to cope with the new smaller generator nut presumably. And finally a subtle change to the T-handle 527 – they straightened the 14mm box instead of being at an angle.;

The 60’s 4 spanner range

Then in approx 1962 the round box went through quite a revision – Hazet deleted the T handle spark plug wrench 527 or 2527, possibly changed the lug wrench to be the plastic handle 772 with hubcap puller in the handle, possibly updated the large screwdriver from a 811-6 to a 811-9 with a more detailed and textured blade and finally the big change around about this time the kit gained another wrench or spanner – making a total of 4 spanners in the kit;

The Toolbox – Hazet Toolboxes

By contributing author: Adam Powers

This month, we are going to take a small jump into the world of the Hazet spare tire toolkit. There are many different variations made for several different European cars over the years. We are going to focus on VW (of course) and mainly on Type 1 boxes. I will include some information on other models at the end of the article.

A Brief History

The Hazet company was founded in 1868 by Hermann Zerver. The name Hazet itself, is a combination of the founder’s initials. The company still exists today and is in Remscheid, Germany. They are a major manufacturer of automotive and aircraft tools.

Hazet started making the toolkits around the late 1940’s, early 50’s to fit in the Spare tire of the Volkswagen Beetle. The tire size on these cars were 16” and the early toolkits were designed to match. There are easily recognizable from their later cousins, as they have the full circle mount on the back, as compared to the half circle mount on the later 15” kits.

An early advertisement for the German market.

The kit pictured below is an early 16” kit. For those who are familiar with the kits, it looks like it is missing the small Phillips screwdriver. This version never came with it! This is known as the “A” version of the early kit.

A picture containing text, table, indoor, sitting Description automatically generated

This is the “Tourist Model” which would fit in other makes, such as a Porsche 356. I will talk about all the tools on the next example. This particular kit does have a couple of inconsistencies. The large spanner wrench is a 25 and 36 mm one. It should only be a 36 mm in these early kits. The screwdrivers should have a yellow band around the end. The screwdrivers in this one are NOS. Slightly later versions as with the wrench. I have left them as they are quite nice.

In late 1952, the “B” version of the 16” kit started using the small Phillips screwdriver.

When VW downsized to a 15” wheel, Hazet obliged and produced a model to fit the bill. The second model is from 1958 but would work from Oct 1952 – Aug 1960 (and later if wanted) if need be. This one has the “half ring” on the back and is made for Volkswagen specifically.

The tools in the ’58 based kit are as follows:

  • #764 Spark Plug Wrench
  • #760 Channellock Pliers
  • #811-6 Large Blade Screwdriver
  • #561 21×36 Wrench
  • #813-2 Blade Screwdriver
  • #450 7×8 Wrench
  • #450 10×12 Wrench
  • #450 14mm Wrench
  • #527 Fuel Pump T- Handle Wrench
  • #1850-6 Pliers
  • #814-02a Phillips Screwdriver
  • #772/2 Lug Wrench

The part numbers and tool styles have varied over the years in the production run of these kits. Some rare ones even have feeler gauges as a part of them!

A picture containing indoor, suitcase, black, pieceDescription automatically generated

The fuel pump wrench would be eliminated from the kit with the discontinuation of 36 hp motors in the deluxe models in 1961.

The final kit we have here is a 1963 and later model. The easiest way to identify this is the change from the metal handle to plastic handle lug wrench.

This kit is fairly like the 1957 kit in design with a small change in wrenches, now with four instead of three:

The toolkits were still available as late as 1968/69 according to this old Hamilton, Ontario dealership brochure:

Other Kits:

Hazet made several other styles for Volkswagen models. Here are just a few examples:

The “1500” version. This is used mostly in Type 3 VW’s. It is made of plastic and is quite rare.

The “Tourist 2”. This kit was mostly used for early Porsche 911 cars

Lastly, this is a “Box” kit for Type 3:

You can still find these kits and the tools at swap meets and online. Prices can be reasonable to quite steep. Some online sellers offer reproduction kits at much lower price. The kits look to be well made. However, it is my understanding the tools are not that of the originals and not to be used as such.

I purchased 3 flavors of cocktails in this kit as part of putting together my own travel kit for when I'd like a cocktail on the train. Looking forward to using one (or more) of them the next time I'm taking a train trip.

I bought a couple of these to include as stocking stuffers and they were hit. I'm told they made for delish cocktails and were very easy to make. I will be buying more as gifts and trying them out myself!

Awesome job and product. Contact customer service because a piece was missing. Shortly after the contact they shipped another kit to me. I will shop with them again as I am very pleased.

Iowa’s Supreme Court tells lower court to let strict abortion law go into effect

hazet tourist tool kit

Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court said Friday the state’s strict abortion law is legal, telling a lower court to dissolve a temporary block on the law and allowing Iowa to ban most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy — before many women know they are pregnant.

The 4-3 ruling is a win for Republican lawmakers, and Iowa joins more than a dozen other states with restrictive abortion laws following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

The instructions to the lower court will be formally sent in 21 days and, for now, abortion remains legal in Iowa up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is unclear how long the district court would take to act after that point.

Currently, 14 states have near-total bans at all stages of pregnancy and three ban abortions at about six weeks.

The Iowa Supreme Court’s majority reiterated on Friday that there is no constitutional right to abortion. As the state requested, they instructed courts to assess whether the government has a legitimate interest in restricting the procedure, rather than whether there is too heavy a burden for people seeking abortion access.

In writing the majority’s opinion, Justice Matthew McDermott wrote that a right to an abortion is “not rooted at all in our state’s history and tradition.” In fact, the majority determined it was the opposite.

“The state’s interest in protecting the unborn can be traced to Iowa’s earliest days,” he wrote.

But Chief Justice Susan Christensen emphatically delivered a dissent, writing that the majority opinion “strips Iowa women of their bodily autonomy.”

Christensen countered McDermott, saying the majority’s “rigid approach relies heavily on the male-dominated history and traditions of the 1800s” and said the Iowa Constitution was not written to reflect the full and equal rights of women.

The ruling previews the ending of a yearslong legal battle over abortion restrictions in Iowa that escalated in 2022 when the Iowa Supreme Court and then the U.S. Supreme Court both overturned decisions establishing a constitutional right to abortion.

In the Iowa State Capitol rotunda, Maggie DeWitte, executive director of Pulse Life Advocates, said she’s been working for 25 years to reach this moment.

“Today is celebration for life for moms, for babies and for the entire state,” she said. “To think now that we will finally have protection for children is really hard to put into words.”

Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds immediately released a celebratory statement Friday morning.

“I’m glad that the Iowa Supreme Court has upheld the will of the people of Iowa,” she said.

The Iowa law passed with exclusively Republican support in an one-day special session last July . A legal challenge was filed the next day by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, Planned Parenthood North Central States and the Emma Goldman Clinic.

The law was in effect for a few days before a district court judge put it on pause , a decision that Reynolds appealed.

At the time, Planned Parenthood North Central States said it stayed open late and made hundreds of phone calls to prepare patients amid the uncertainty, rescheduling abortion appointments in other states for those who wanted. Court filings showed Iowa clinics had several hundred abortion appointments scheduled over two weeks last July, with most past the six-week mark in their pregnancies.

Since then, Planned Parenthood has ceased abortion services in two Iowa cities, including one in Des Moines. The other Des Moines location doesn’t currently have the capacity to serve patients seeking an abortion, so abortion medication and the procedure are being offered about 36 miles (59 kilometers) north in Ames.

On Friday, Iowa abortion providers said they will continue to operate within the confines of the law. While it is not clear when in late July the injunction will be dissolved, Planned Parenthood North Central States and Emma Goldman Clinic representatives both said they would schedule as many appointments as possible before that point.

Ruth Richardson, president and CEO of PPNCS, also said the organization has spent the last year making “long-term regional investments” in preparation for this outcome, including expanding facilities in Mankato, Minnesota, and in Omaha, Nebraska.

“We stand ready to connect Iowans with the essential health care they so desperately need, even if that means traveling out of state,” she said.

Abortion access stands to be a major issue in the 2024 election across the country, and the issue was a key point of contention in Thursday’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump . Biden weighed in Friday on the ruling in Iowa, saying “this should never happen in America.” It remains to be seen whether the decision will turn the tide in an increasingly red Iowa.

There are limited circumstances under the Iowa law that would allow for abortion after six weeks of pregnancy: rape, if reported to law enforcement or a health provider within 45 days; incest, if reported within 145 days; if the fetus has a fetal abnormality “incompatible with life”; or if the pregnancy is endangering the life of the patient. The state’s medical board recently defined rules for how doctors should adhere to the law.

Still, details from the board on enforcement were more limited. The rules do not outline how the board would determine noncompliance or what the appropriate disciplinary action might be.

Also missing was additional guidance on just how imminent risks to the pregnant women must be before doctors can intervene, a question vexing physicians across the country, especially after the Texas Supreme Court denied a pregnant woman with life-threatening complications access to abortion. While the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for emergency abortions in Idaho , the court stopped short of issuing broader rulings.

Emily Boevers, an obstetrician gynecologist practicing in rural Iowa who advocates for abortion access, questioned how far women will suffer before they are provided life-saving care.

“I hope that our governor will be available by telephone to take the calls wondering if we pass that line where patients are deadly ill and we can perform life-saving care for her,” she said Friday. “Our patients will suffer.”

News Release

Going-to-the-sun road open for 2024 season.

WEST GLACIER, Mont. [June 22, 2024] – Going-to-the-Sun Road officially opened this morning for the 2024 summer season. The road may now be accessed by motorized vehicles over Logan Pass from both the West Glacier and St. Mary entrances.      Road crews battled avalanches and deep snow levels above 5,500 ft this year, and facilities staff worked against freezing temperatures to get the water system operational. As of Thursday, staff were busy shoveling walkways and access into the visitor center.    Services at Logan Pass include restroom facilities, but potable water is currently not yet available. Visitors should plan to bring their own drinking water.     Visitor information services will be provided at the Logan Pass Visitor Center from 9 am to 7 pm daily starting June 22. The Glacier National Park Conservancy bookstore will be operating inside of the Logan Pass Visitor Center.     With Going-to-the-Sun Road fully open, the number of vehicle reservations available will be increased. For the remainder of the season, this increase will be executed through the next-day reservations available at 7 pm MDT each day. Vehicle reservations are exclusively available on Recreation.gov and not available at the park.  Vehicle reservations are required to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road from the west side of the park past Apgar. Reservations will be required for those traveling by vehicle or motorcycle from 6 am to 3 pm each day through September 8, 2024. Vehicle reservations will not be required to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road from the east side of the park at the St. Mary Entrance this summer.  Vehicle reservations are also currently required for the North Fork, and starting July 1, 2024, reservations will be required at Many Glacier.    Visitors with lodging, camping, or commercial activity reservations (e.g., boat tours and horseback rides) do not need a vehicle reservation and can use their confirmation email to access the portion of the park for which their activity is booked.  Service reservations originating east of Logan Pass cannot be used instead of a vehicle reservation for access past the Apgar Check Point heading east on Going-to-the-Sun Road.    The park is open 24/7 and visitors may enter the park before 6 am or after 3 pm without a vehicle reservation.     Additional vehicle reservation information and frequently asked questions are available on the park’s Vehicle Reservation page .     With the opening of the road, the weekend hiker/biker shuttle will no longer be operating. Daily shuttle service along Going-to-the-Sun Road will begin operating July 1 on a first-come, first-served basis at the Apgar and St. Mary visitor centers with stops along Going-to-the-Sun Road.     Parking at Logan Pass, Apgar Village, and other areas may be congested or temporarily unavailable. After the daily shuttles begin operating on July 1, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the free shuttle for hiker access to Logan Pass although waits for shuttles may be long depending on the time and location. Check the park website for additional information on shuttle stops.  While driving along the road, particularly through the Rim Rock area (approximately one mile west of Logan Pass) visitors should be aware of potential rockfall and should not slow down or stop in this section. Rocks and other debris continue to fall throughout the summer, requiring daily clean up. With the level of snow at Logan Pass, visitors should use extreme caution and refrain from crossing snowfields or standing under snow overhangs.    Vehicles and vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet, and/or wider than 8 feet, are prohibited on Going-to-the-Sun Road between Avalanche Campground and Rising Sun. Vehicles over 10 feet in height may have difficulty driving west from Logan Pass due to narrow lanes and projecting rock overhangs.     The Highline Trail and a portion of Grinnell Glacier Trail remain closed due to hazardous snow conditions and emerging vegetation. For up-to-date information on trail conditions and clearing activities, visit the park’s trail status webpage . Hidden Lake Trail will be closed June 15 to August 7 from the overlook to Hidden Lake due to bear activity near the lake outlet while fish are spawning.       Based on observed traffic patterns during previous vehicle reservation pilot seasons, vehicular traffic is expected to increase every day at 3 pm when vehicle reservations are no longer required for the day. For safety purposes, Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed to bicycle use (both directions) through September 8 between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. from Apgar to Logan Pass.     Visitors are encouraged to limit vehicle idling to no more than two minutes in parking lots, at scenic viewpoints and trailheads, and while stopped in traffic lines and road construction to benefit the health of both the public and the park resources.     Visitors should not throw food waste, including apple cores, orange peels, sunflower seeds, unwanted drinks (coffee, tea, soda) etc., out car windows while waiting in lines. This attracts wildlife to the roadways which increases wildlife fatalities. Discard garbage in bear-proof garbage cans.

One interesting feature you’ll notice about Moscow mule is that it’s very often served in a copper mug. The reason behind this is simple – copper conducts heat very well, and if the drink is ice-cold, the surrounding copper will be, too. This pair of mugs is perfect for enjoying Moscow mule made at home, as it comes with more than just mugs to satisfy your needs.

Aside from the mugs, the kit also comes with two coasters and two straws. The straws are similarly made out of copper and match the mugs perfectly. The coasters help keep the mugs in place, so even if you’re moving around a bit with alcohol in your system, the mugs just won’t slide around or tip over. It also helps that these mugs cost less than $20, making them quite affordable.

  • Comes with straws and coasters
  • The quality of the mug isn’t perfect

Best Accessories

TantivyBo Moscow Mule Kit

TantivyBo Moscow Mule Kit

A Moscow mule is a lot more popular than you think – well, in a way at least. A great example of this would be Smirnoff mule – a highly popular alcoholic beverage that’s very similar to Moscow mule in terms of composition. Smirnoff mule is often sold in glass bottles, and these can be a pain to open without the proper tools or creative thinking.

This particular kit of Moscow mule mugs comes with a bottle opener, perfect for Smirnoff mules, beer, and other drinks. Aside from the opener, you also get the four mugs, four coasters, and even an e-book to read if you’ve got the time. The mugs are packaged in a neat little gift box, making them perfect for the holidays.

  • Comes with a bottle opener
  • Comes in a gift box
  • No straws included

Old Dutch Moscow Mule Kit

Old Dutch Moscow Mule Kit

Cocktails are very commonly shared between couples, and if you’ve got a significant other who loves Moscow mule just as much as you do, then this pair of mugs is the perfect addition to your cupboard. The mugs come with two engraved labels of “Mr.” and “Mrs.”. There’s even a cute little heart that replaces the period to add a little romantic touch to the mugs.

One interesting thing to note about these mugs is that they have smooth surfaces. Many copper mugs for Moscow mule are made to have a bit of texture to them, making them easier to hold, especially when cold. While you may be able to hold the mugs just fine, the look of a smooth mug may be off-putting to those who are just so used to textured copper mugs.

  • Great for couples
  • Nice font design
  • A smooth mug may be off-putting for some

Moscow Mule Kits: A Buyer’s Guide

Moscow Mules, Explained

If you guessed that Moscow mule was a name for some cocktail, then you guessed right (or you already knew what it was). The Moscow mule is made out of three main components – vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. They’re mixed together and served with a lime slice and a lot of ice.

The reason why Moscow mule is such a popular cocktail is because of two things – its unique taste profile and how easy it is to drink. Mix all of the ingredients together and you’ve got something that’s sweet, spicy, and strong all at the same time.

Moscow mules are also incredibly easy to drink, even deceptively so. You can drink an entire glass and not even know it’s alcoholic, depending on how the cocktail was mixed, which is why many mistake this for a non-alcoholic drink or non-alcoholic spirit at first taste. This is largely thanks to both the sweetness and the spice of the drink hiding the bitter flavors of alcohol that would otherwise be very easy to spot with a single sip.

The name “Moscow mule”, like many other cocktail names, is shrouded in mystery, but one popular theory was that Americans often associate vodka with Russia, hence the “Moscow”. The “mule” portion came from the drink having a strong flavor or “kick” that is attributed to the presence of ginger beer.

One unique aspect of the Moscow mule compared to other cocktails is that it’s almost always served in a copper mug. You do see copper mugs used every now and then in drinks, with some of them being used on request. However, whenever you think of copper mugs, it’s almost always associated with the Moscow mule. But why?

There’s no real answer for this, as you can technically use any glass for a Moscow mule, and any other drink would work well in a copper mug. However, what we can answer is why the Moscow mule and copper mugs work so well, and it has to do with thermodynamics.  The Moscow mule is served ice-cold, and copper is great at matching the temperature of its surroundings. The copper mug becomes just as cold as the drink, giving your mouth a chilly feel as you take a sip. Combine this with the plethora of flavors you experience in a sip of a Moscow mule, and you can see the appeal behind it.

Moscow mules are a very simple cocktail to make, but you do need a few things to make the perfect glass.

Mixing and measuring tools

To make the perfect Moscow mule , you’ll need some tools to measure the right proportion of the ingredients, as well as a mixing tool to get the flavors together. Now, you may think that this requires buying some expensive bartending tools, but you don’t have to get those to make a good Moscow mule. As long as you have something to measure the drinks with and something to stir with, you’re basically good to go.

A copper mug is what really gives the Moscow mule some life. It presents the drink beautifully, as everything in the drink contrasts very well with the copper’s color. There’s also, of course, the temperature-conducting aspect, which adds even more to the drinking experience.

Ingredients

Of course, you can’t make the drink at all without the right ingredients. The Moscow mule is traditionally made using vodka, ginger beer, and lime or lime juice. You can spice things up by adding a few extra ingredients here and there, but those three ingredients mentioned are all you really need.

Some cocktails are served hot, while others are served cold, and the Moscow mule is served with large helpings of ice to really give that chilly feel. The ice also takes full advantage of the copper mug. You don’t have to go overboard on the ice if you want more drink in your glass, but more ice means a colder drink and closer to freezing temperature, and that’s where the drink really shines.

In recent years, a popular alcoholic beverage known as the Smirnoff mule has gained a lot of popularity. The drink is made by the brand Smirnoff, and it’s actually heavily inspired by the Moscow mule, being made out of Smirnoff’s own vodka, ginger beer, and lime. It’s basically a more accessible and affordable version of the Moscow mule.

In essence, both the Moscow mule and Smirnoff mule are the same, but the mixed aspect of the Moscow mule, combined with the ability to choose any brand of vodka or ginger beer you choose, makes the Moscow mule the more refined choice for experienced cocktail enthusiasts. On the other hand, if you just want to kick back and drink a cold one without having to mix anything, the Smirnoff mule is a great option.

People Also Asked

No, Moscow Mule was actually said to have been invented in New York’s Chatham Hotel in 1941 by John “Jack” Morgan.

Moscow Mule combines spicy, sweet, and strong in one drink, making it surprisingly easy to drink for first-timers.

Smirnoff Mule is made using the same ingredients as Moscow Mule and is sold in individual glass bottles, much like beer.
