Places to visit in Malaysia

Malaysia’s dazzling cityscapes, entrancing ancient rainforests and mélange of ancient cultures prove true the tourism slogan, ‘Malaysia, Truly Asia.’ Cooks hovering around simmering pots of soup and noodles bark out orders in a dialect unknown to you. While aromatic plantations invite you for a steaming cup of tea. The quiet town of Langkawi calls out to you for a stroll by the seashore. This is just a trailer of Malaysia for you. This country is waiting to be explored. Here are a few places to visit in Malaysia as a part of your Malaysia tourism package that will mesmerise and engross you.

Kuala Lumpur

Street markets that don’t sleep. Skyscrapers clad in steel giving a sharp contrast to colourfully ornamented mosques and temples spelling culture. Kuala Lumpur is an effervescent mix of communities. The shimmering and imposing Petronas Towers look down at you. Marvel at the city’s landscapes from the inside of the tallest twin towers in the world. Make your way to Jalan Alor, deemed to be the city’s most popular eats street. It is crammed with modest tables perfect for alfresco dining. Noodles and rice are served in banana leaves or newspaper packets. This is dining, redefined.

The golden statue of Lord Murugan guards this national treasure. This limestone hill is dotted with a series of caves and cave temples. Reaching the Temple Caves is quite the climb, with around 272 steps. Bats flutter, revealing themselves from the shadow while mischievous monkeys scan tourists, looking for their next prey. You will also discover nine hundred-year-old ironwood coffins in Batu caves .

Sipadan Island

A hidden gem, Sipadan is identified as the only oceanic island in the country. If you are a water baby, this is the place to be. Famous for its breath-taking sunsets, this island is perhaps the only one that can be explored on foot within half an hour. Expect world-class diving and countless speed board trips to Sipadan’s exquisite underwater world when in this island. While one side of Sipadan spurs up images of children paddling their boats between flamboyantly coloured houseboats and grubby driftwood sheds, the other is about tanned individuals emerging from the underwater world after hours of contact with sharks and other creatures of the sea.

Cameron Highlands

If you are a tea connoisseur Cameron Highlands , this is the place to be. Walk through strawberry fields and lush green tea plantations that dot Malaysia’s largest hill station. Amidst this touristic hubbub is an ominous presence of tranquility that exists throughout. Scenic trails and picturesque sceneries call for extensive trekking and outdoor activities.

What to eat in Malaysia?

Malaysia’s street food scene takes ‘eating out’ way too seriously. Food here comes fast, with speed being the main ingredient. Take away noodles and soup in loose packets or eat them from banana leaves, having street food in Malaysia is something you must try.

  • BatuMaung Satay – The aroma of fresh grilled chicken, pork or beef on bamboo skewers will lure you towards little lanes dotted with hawker stalls. Make your way to Lorong Baru, a bustling lane that comes alive with food lovers in the night. This dish is usually served with cucumber chunks accompanied with raw white onion.
  • Ice Kacang – An evolved version of a banana split, this sweet dish is prepared from corn, kidney beans and translucent small morsels of jelly. This dish doesn’t have ice cream, but shaved ice instead dipped in a bubble gum like syrup. This one will surely be a favourite amongst the kids!
  • Char KueyTeow - The ultimate comfort food, this dish feels like home with savoury noodles topped with hot eggs, prawns and some nutritious bean sprouts. This dish is flavourful, with contrasting textures and its charred smokiness that lingers on your tongue long after you have had it.
  • Roast chicken rice – Who knew healthy could also be tasty? Chopped chicken with a hint of golden and a drizzle of soy-sauce is piled atop fluffy rice cooked in butter and oil. This dish is best had with a hot bowl of soup with some cucumber slices on the side.

malaysia tour package 2023 from india

Among Asia's most developed countries, the island-peninsula of Malaysia is a multicultural land of urbane skyscrapers, historical landmarks, temples rubbing shoulders with pagodas, churches and mosques and legendary gastronomy. Welcoming over 4.3 million tourists annually, Malaysia is one of the ten most visited countries worldwide. Take an immeasurably rewarding trip with Holidify's Malaysia tour packages.

The best time to visit Malaysia is between December to April. It takes 5-6 days to explore Malaysia's sightseeing spots and diverse culture, an amalgam of Malay, Peranakan, European, Chinese, Arabic and Indian influences. The capital of Kuala Lumpur is home to colonial-era mansions, shopping districts like Bukit Bintang and the iconic 451m-tall Petronas Twin Towers.

When you travel to Malaysia, catch world-famous charms of this Southeast Asian starlet - dive into the turquoise waters of Pulau Redang's East Coast, celebrate Thaipusam festival at the Batu Caves, admire rich biodiversity at Borneo's beaches, steep sandstone cliffs, mangroves and peat swamp forests and visit a cool hill station, the Cameron Highlands.

Penang is Malaysia's most popular tourist destination known for its soft sandy beaches, temples and monuments. Take a sightseeing tour of Kek Lok Si Temple, Tropical Spice Garden, Fort Cornwallis and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah are scenic beaches with opportunities for parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkelling and windsurfing.

Accorded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Georgetown Historic City is Penang's capital. Georgetown is flanked by swanky shopping centres, Chinese manors, pubs, shophouses, mosques, cafes and artsy boutiques. With hiking trails and funicular railways, Verdant Penang Hill overlooks it all.

Make a beeline for the top of Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia's highest mountain, with its summit at 4,095 metres. The mountain is located within Kinabalu Park, Malaysia's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hike through Fraser's Hill and Ipoh Caverns, the country's longest caves displaying 5,000-year-old Neolithic paintings.

In Northeastern Malaysia, Perhentian Islands lies clustered within a marine park accessible by ferries. The two largest islands here are Pulau Perhentian Besar, with a lively backpacking scene, and Pulau Perhentian Kecil, with its rainforest beaches, upscale and family-oriented destinations. In addition, you can explore less touristy beaches at Redang and Sipadan Islands.

For thrilling adventures, go to Gunung Mulu National Park, Sunway Lagoon Amusement and Water Park, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Zoo Negara. Ride the SkyCab cable car and walk Machinchang Mountain's Glass Bridge at Langkawi Islands.

Streamline your trip with Holidify's best Malaysia tour packages, including visits to fascinating attractions and accommodations for tourists, families and solo adventurers.

“ I did my first solo trip in India with WanderOn. Initially I was sceptical about their Meghalaya-Kaziranga trip as I didn't have any prior experience with them but the team assured me that it's going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

“ In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.

Such is the range of Malaysia. Given the variety that is on offer, here is a list of the 10 best places in Malaysia worth visiting:-

Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur - Standing tall at a height of 452 meters, the Petronas Twin Towers are the tallest in the whole world. This behemoth has a total of 88 floors which are accessible by an impressive total number of 76 elevators. With so much to see and enjoy, the Petronas Twin Towers make for a great addition to your Malaysia tour package .

Batu Caves, Selangor - These cave systems are located just an hour away from Kuala Lumpur. These consist of three main caves in addition to many smaller ones. A visit here is sure to leave you with an otherworldly feeling, such as the charm of these hidden attractions. This makes it a worthwhile addition to your Malaysia package .

Mount Kinabalu, Sabah - Mount Kinabalu is the tallest mountain in all of Malaysia. It comes under Kinabalu Park. This park is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the oldest parks in the country. Mount Kinabalu is a challenging and beautiful attraction that deserves a spot on Malaysia tour packages from India .

Perhentian Islands - Perhentian Islands have all the idyllic quality one expects on a tropical escape. Historically, it was a stop for traders traveling in Southeast Asia. Over time, it has become part of a marine park and subsequently a major tourist destination as well. There are 2 major islands here that offer modern amenities. These are Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil.

Sipadan Islands - The Sipadan Islands and the surrounding water make for the richest marine habitat in the entire world. It is home to several species of land and aquatic wildlife - hawksbill turtles, monitor lizards, whale sharks, and much more.

Gunung Mulu National Park - The sixth entry on our list is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is most popular because of its karst limestone pinnacles, but its massive caves are just as spectacular. It involves ropes, harnesses, and a lot more, and as we said earlier - poses a challenge. This offbeat destination deserves a place on your Malaysia tour package from India .

Penang Hills - Penang Hill’s peaks are accessible via Penang Hill Railways. It is an air-conditioned locomotive that covers a 2007-meter-long climb in a mere 10 minutes at most. There are mid-stops in a way that are used if requested by the passengers. The biggest highlight of this attraction is the views that can be seen from the top of the hills.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre - If you consider yourself an animal lover, then you definitely can’t miss out on this one. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1964. It aims to rescue orphaned orangutan babies from the pet trade or illegal hunting. It not only rescues the creatures but also helps them learn to survive in the wild so that they can one day be released back into the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve.

Kek Lok Si Temple, George Town - Kek Lok Si is the country’s largest Buddhist temple. It sits at the bottom of Air Itam mountain. While it is now owing to its relatively modern origin period of the 1890s, the surrounding 10,000 buddhas along with the large seven-story pagoda make for a formidable sight.

Langkawi SkyCab, Kedah - The Langkawi cable car connects the Base Station and the top of the Gunung Machinchang Mountain. The main attraction of this peak is the pedestrian sky bridge. In addition to that, there is also a middle station where travelers have access to a viewing platform. If great views are what you are after then you should book a Malaysia and Langkawi package straight away.

Malaysia is hot and humid for most of the year and you’ll need light and loose clothing. It’s also a highly religious country and it’s best to dress modestly with shoulders and thighs covered.

Sunscreen and repellent

Protect yourself from the natural elements of Malaysia with at least SPF 30 sunscreen and a strong DEET insect repellent.

A small travel umbrella will come in handy in Malaysia, from shielding you from the monsoon rains to blocking out the blazing sunshine.

Highlights of Sabah & Mt Kinabalu

The itinerary did exactly as expected, showcased the highlights of Sabah. The additional activities exceeded expectations; tubing in Tambatuon village was fun for the range of ages amongst out group, on the night jungle walk in kinabatangan, we had the pleasure of strolling across an endangered tarsier. Our well-connected guide (Jerry) was actively involved in all activities and shared a wealth of knowledge, as a local. The connections Jerry has with the communities made us feel at home in Borneo. His professionalism and experience in mountain climbing made the Mt Kinabalu hike a personal highlight for me. A well-passed, humbling and spectacular adventure well worth taking.

The tour was fantabulous! Great sights, great food, excellent tour guides are ingredients for an unforgettable experience. What people love about Malaysia Tours

If you are looking for a nature holiday, I would most defiantely recommend Borneo. Saw all the wildlife I had hoped for and more. Our CEO with G Adventures, Ricky, was fantastic. Helpful, kind, knowledgable and very calm. Always happy to help and answer any questions regarding the wildlife or history of Borneo. The group was also fantastic, full of laid back, like minded, wildlife lovers, from all over the world. Thank you!!
This trip was amazing and exceeded my expectations. I loved the mix of culture, nature, hiking and relaxing.
Really enjoyed everything about the Borneo trip, the guide, Gobert was fun, helpful and pleasant. I would recommend this tour.

Malaysia Tour

Malaysia, a country in Southeast Asia, includes both the island of Borneo as well as the Malay Peninsula. Malaysia Tour Packages are extremely popular because of the country's stunning natural beauty. An ideal vacation destination, the country is a melting pot of Indian, Malay, European, as well as Chinese cultures. Kuala Lumpur, the nation's capital, is a vibrant metropolis with both historic colonial buildings and modern shopping districts. Malaysia is home to a wide variety of ecosystems, from the sandy shores of Langkawi to the snowy peaks of Mount Kinabalu.

Discover the wonders of this Southeast Asian country on one of our carefully crafted vacation packages. The best time to plan your Malaysia holidays is between March and October when the weather is mild, and the rains are infrequent. Different parts of the country experience different seasons, which is something to keep in mind. East Malaysia experiences a very different climate from Peninsular Malaysia throughout the year (Borneo). The months of December through February are ideal for visiting western Malaysian islands like Langkawi as well as Penang.

Learn more about Malaysia

Best time to visit.

The climate in Malaysia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much and stay in the 100s F most of the day, dropping back to the mid to high 60s F at night. This makes Malaysia a great place for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing in the sun.

Humidity is higher during the wet season and can be quite oppressive for those not used to it. The wet season changes from coast to coast. From November to April, the wet season hits the east coast of the peninsula and it is dry on the west coast. From May to October, it's dry on the east coast and wet on the west.

Some people of Malaysia observe Ramadan. If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it is important to consider that some restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Malaysia truly is a modern melting pot – with Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian and indigenous groups making up the population. With this cultural diversity comes a mix of religions, customs, foods and languages. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism are the main religions practiced, although most of the world’s religions are represented somewhere in Malaysia. The Muslim call to prayer, Hindu Festivals and Buddhist ceremonies all coexist with relative peace, with the South-East Asian concept of ‘saving face’ leading most people to strive for harmony.

Regardless of cultural background, elderly people and those of high rank in society (business people, government officials etc.) are afforded much respect. Food plays an important part in daily life, with religious celebrations and holidays characterized by family gatherings and elaborately prepared feasts. Alcohol isn’t a large part of Malaysian society (probably due to the significant Muslim population), but is widely available for purchase and consumption. Experience Malaysian culture for yourself on our 18day Ultimate Adventure.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food , savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Malaysia’s melting pot of cultural influences is evident in its cuisine.

Things to try in Malaysia

Delicious roti, chicken rice, spicy sambal eggplant and kopi peng (iced coffee).

2. Baba Nonya/Peranaken Cuisine

Fresh spring rolls, babi chin (stewed pork belly) and Mee Siam (rice noodles).

Aromatic curries, cool lassis, delicious daal and sweet fried coconut balls.

Hearty noodle broths, Peking duck pancakes and chrysanthemum tea. Try some of Malaysia's most famous dishes on our 9day Borneo Family Holiday.

Geography and environment

Balmy beaches, fish-filled reefs, wild jungles, verdant highlands, relaxed ports, colorful cities and simple villages – Malaysia has it all. Sharing land borders with Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand , Malaysia’s environment is as diverse as its population. From the urban cityscape of Kuala Lumpur and the colonial charm of Penang, to the old-world streets of Melaka, a journey through Malaysia will reveal changing landscapes and evolving environments.

While the large cities are typically built-up, busy and full of buzz, Malaysia’s provincial towns and remote highlands remain delightfully relaxed, with people living simple lives based on agriculture, animal husbandry or other small enterprises. With such a rich range of environments, Malaysia offers beaches and islands for swimming, snorkeling and diving; jungles and highlands for trekking and adventuring; and villages and cities for exploration and relaxation. Explore this country's breathtaking landscapes on our 8day Highlights of Malaysia tour.

History and government

Early history.

The first recorded historical mentions of Malaysia date back to 7th and 8th-century Sanskrit and Chinese texts. During the following centuries, Malaysia came under the influence and control of Indonesia, Thailand and India – with the accompanying religions, cuisines and languages spreading in the region. In the 16th century, Malaysia came under the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers, who increasingly expanded their reach throughout the region to create the Dutch East Indies. Under this influence, Malaysia did well in trade, and flourished as a result of the economic gains of being located on one of the most important trade routes of the time.

Recent history

During the 19th century, the British took control of the Malaysian Peninsula, with the Federated Malay States being officially formed in 1865. Malaysia remained under British rule until Japan invaded during World War II – but once Japan was defeated in 1945, British rule returned and the Federation of Malay was born in 1948. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya formed with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah to create Malaysia.

Only two years after, Singapore became an independent state, leaving Malaysia in its current form. In the 1970s, Malaysia’s economy grew rapidly until the late 1990s, when the Asian Financial Crisis slowed economic growth in the region. The economy soon recovered, and Malaysia enjoyed the international exposure that came with hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games (held in Kuala Lumpur). Currently, Malaysian standards of living continue to rise, and Kuala Lumpur has emerged as one of Asia’s premier cities.

Top 10 culinary experiences in Malaysia

1. baba nonya banquet.

The port town of Melaka is known for its unique Baba Nyonya style food. A fusion of Straits Chinese and Malaysian food (with hints of Portuguese, Thai and Indian), chowing down at a Nyonya restaurant is an elaborate affair filled with spicy flavors and tangy sauces.

2. Savour street eats

The streets of Malaysia are filled with locals pushing street carts selling everything from hand-made roti to fresh fruit, delicious satay and steaming bowls of laksa. Malaysian street food offers convenience, variety and flavor on a budget.

3. Taste some tea

Traditional tea is made a little differently in Malaysia. Order ‘teh tarik’ and watch as your condensed-milk tea is frothed and cooled by being poured dramatically between two metal cups, which are held meters apart.

4. Tuck into a hot curry

Beef Rendang is a Malay culinary favorite and is made at home, served at restaurants and prepared for special occasions. This spicy curry is packed with lemongrass, cinnamon, cloves, chili and melt-in-your-mouth beef — an unforgettable fusion of flavors!

5. Seek out cool city eateries

The hip cafes and bars of Kuala Lumpur are a great place to mix with locals and connect with modern Asian culture. Head to the Jalan Bukit Bintang area in KL and check out the new-age teahouses, cool cafes and international dining options.

6. Down a luscious lassi

With a large Indian population, it’s not hard to find a refreshing Lassi when in Malaysia. Made from yogurt and fresh fruit, sipping a cool Mango Lassi is the ideal antidote to a humid summer’s day.

7. Relish some rice

Chicken–rice is a favorite with locals and travelers alike. Available at small neighborhood eateries, night markets and from street carts, this option is a great, low-cost meal for travelers on the go.

8. Slurp a bowl of laksa

Chicken, prawn, tofu and fish; there are many different varieties of spicy laksa to try while in Malaysia. Noodle types and ingredients may vary around the country - a good excuse to try laksa in every town you visit.

9. Chill out with a coconut

Quench your thirst with a fresh coconut juice. Sold at roadside stalls and on beaches, a straw is simply slipped into a stripped back coconut for a refreshing post-swim pick-me-up.

10. Feast on roti

No visit to Malaysia is complete without encountering roti. Walk down any busy street and the sight of people kneading roti dough at street stalls and shop windows will be common. Often served with lentils, potatoes, onions and rice, roti is an excellent option for vegetarians looking for a meat-free meal.

Malaysia has a shopping experience to suit travelers on all budgets. From dazzling, modern malls and exciting night markets to boutique specialty stores, the opportunity to buy something special is never far away.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Malaysia

1. Kuala Lumpur

The capital’s huge malls offer loads of variety and opportunities to shop. Shoes, bags and accessories are all great buys - from haute couture labels to chic chain-store fashions.

Home to a diverse range of artisans and craftsmen. Browse the markets, galleries and shops to pick up antiques, art and bespoke items. Handcrafted wooden ornaments, leather sandals, vibrant woven bags and antique coins are the best picks.

Boasts an eclectic mix of sleek malls, independent stores, interesting boutiques and open-air street markets. Head to Little India to source Indian-inspired saris, garlands and silver jewelry or stroll along Rope Walk to find one-of-a-kind antiques and treasures.

4. Langkawi

This island has duty-free status, making it a great place to buy fragrances, watches, cameras and other technology. For art lovers, the Craft Cultural Complex showcases locally made fabric, ceramics, baskets and jewelry. Get shopping on our 20day Best of Borneo small group adventure.

Festivals and events

Kuala Lumpur’s Batu Caves light up in honor of the Hindi deity Subramaniam (also known as Lord Murugan). Pilgrims arrive after sunset and watch as brave individuals thread hooks and skewers through their bodies to carry decorative steel arches to the Gods. This is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before!

Malaysian Grand Prix

For a bit of high-octane fun, see the fastest cars in the world in action at the Malaysian Grand Prix, held near Kuala Lumpur each year.

Ramadan and Eid

Ramadan is observed by the Muslim population of Malaysia. During the ninth and holiest month in the Islamic calendar, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

What's the weather like in Malaysia?

Most of   Malaysia   has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather throughout the year. While the country experiences wet and dry seasons, the line between them is blurred and showers can occur at any time of year. The temperatures in Malaysia are steady, with averages of 73°F to 91°F along the coast and lowlands, and a cooler 57°F to 77°F in the highlands. It’s even colder at higher elevations like   Mt Kinabalu in Borneo , which can see see temps in the low 30s at the summit.

Is tipping customary in Malaysia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Malaysia. Some restaurants include a 10% service fee in bills. Feel free to leave a tip at restaurants or with taxi drivers if you’re feeling generous – it will be appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Malaysia?

The internet is easy to access in Malaysia’s large cities, with internet cafes and WiFi hot spots quite common, especially in tourist spots, hotels and hostels. Regional areas and rural communities might have little to no internet access, so be aware of this before heading out of the city.

Can I use my cell phone while in Malaysia?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Malaysia’s large cities; however, it may be patchy in regional areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What to wear in Malaysia

Layering is the key to dressing for Malaysia — specifically long, loose, lightweight clothing as it's culturally respectful and will keep you cool in the tropical climate. A light fabric like linen is great for the heat as it absorbs moisture (read: sweat) and dries quickly. You might want to avoid cotton as it takes ages to dry — not ideal for places like  Borneo  where the humidity can be oppressive! Sportswear is also a good option for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Malaysia?

Malaysian public toilets are a mix of western-style toilets and squat toilets. Up-market hotels and malls will usually have both options, whereas rural areas will almost certainly only have squat toilets. Be aware that soap and paper aren't always supplied, so be prepared and carry your own.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Hawker food snack = 7-25 MYR
  • Cup of teh tarik (tea) = 5-12 MYR
  • Beer in a bar or pub = 8.50 MYR
  • Souvenir t-shirt = 10-35 MYR

Can I drink the water in Malaysia?

It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Malaysia. Filtered water is a better option; try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Malaysia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by malls, hotels and large restaurants in Malaysia. Smaller guesthouses, shops and cafes may not accept credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover purchases in smaller establishments.

What is ATM access like in Malaysia?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and towns but are far less common in rural and remote areas. Ensure you have enough cash before heading to isolated areas, as ATMs might be sparse.

  • 1 Jan: New Year's Day
  • 22 Jan: Chinese New Year
  • 1 Feb: Federal Territory Day
  • 21 Apr: Hari Raya Puasa (End of Ramadan)
  • 1 May: Labour Day

India Tour Packages from Malaysia can be customized according to your specific needs , We need to know the number of days that you are planning to visit India , The destinations that you wish to include in the itinerary , The category of hotels needed and the preferred mode of travel ,The Travel counsellor at Swan Tours will design the holiday package accordingly. Some of the travel ideas for an India Tour are as below:

Classic India Tour

This India tour package is a broader version of the well-trod Golden Triangle, which concentrates on Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. For a more comprehensive and exciting experience, start in Bombay and include Khajuraho and Varanasi. You can fly any or all of these legs, but touring with a hired car and driver gives you a better look at the countryside and allows for impromptu stops along the way.

Duration - 17 days

Transportation - Fly to Delhi, drive from Delhi to Khajuraho, fly to Varanasi, and fly back to Delhi.

The Route - Two days: Bombay. Dive into this heady metropolis for a crash course in all things Indian. Explore the historic Fort district, navigate some bazaars, and stroll around lovely Malabar Hill, saving time to wander from Chowpatty Beach down Marine Drive along the Arabian Sea.

Three days: Fatehpur Sikri and Agra. Enrouet from Jaipur to Agra, tour the splendid buildings of the ancient and deserted Mogul capital Fatehpur Sikri. In Agra you'll encounter the world-famous Taj Mahal and the much less famous but almost equally beautiful tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah.

Two days: Gwalior and Orcha. Drive from Agra to Gwalior to see its spectacular pre-Mogul Hindu fort and built into a high escarpment. An optional excursion brings you to Orchha, another seat of Hindu rajas that mixes palaces, temples, and monuments on a small, picturesque river.

Two days: Khajuraho. Drive on to Khajuraho and spend two days absorbing the exuberantly carved 10th- and 11th century temples and the surrounding villages, which cling strongly to an agrarian lifestyle.

Two days: Varanasi. Fly from Khajuraho to Varanasi. Take a peaceful morning cruise on the Ganges River to witness Hindu rituals on the steps of the sacred waters. Wander among Varanasi's temples and silk or carpet emporiums and drive out to nearby Sarnath, imbued with Buddhist significance.

Three days: Delhi. Fly to Delhi to explore the old and new capitals. Old Delhi has Mogul remnants, such as the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Chandni Chowk, now a hodgepodge market; New Delhi has the Mogul Humayun's tomb and also the seat of the former British Raj and the lovely Lodi Gardens. Have a look at the Crafts Museum and save time for last-minute shopping.

Southern Idyll

Experience the tropical south beginning in Tamil Nadu with historic towns and massive temples. Relax at seaside resorts and on indigenous boats as you cruise through the lush backwaters of Kerala. Search for wildlife at Kerala's excellent Lake Pedro Wildlife Sanctuary. Add one more cultural dimension—say, a Kathakali dance performance—and, as a personal indulgence, a soothing ayurvedic massage to chases away any lingering stress.

Duration 13-14 days

Transportation - Hire a car and driver for excursions from Madras, then fly from Madras to Madurai. Hire another car and driver for the trip west to Lake Periyar; continue to Cochin and then pause for a slow cruise on the backwaters near Alleppey. Drive on to Kovalam and wind up at Trivandrum, where you can catch flights to other major cities.

The Route - Four days: Madras and Mamallapuram. Spend two days in Madras, originally developed by the Portuguese and British but now decidedly South Indian, with bazaars, bustling Hindu temples, and a thriving film industry. Take a leisurely two-day excursion to Mamallapuram via Kanchipuram, a silk-weaving center and the site of more than 200 temples. At Mamallapuram, on the Bay of Bengal, see the exquisite cave sculptures and shore temple left behind by the Pallava dynasty (4th-8th centuries). Catch some sun and surf at a relaxing resort, and return to Madras.

Two days: Madurai. Fly from Madras to Madurai and spend two days exploring the city and its astonishing Meenakshi Temple, whose marvelous architecture includes soaring gopurams (entrance towers) and prominent displays of ritual. Comb through the bazaars surrounding the temple complex.

Two days: Lake Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Drive west from Madurai across the Western Ghats to Kerala's Lake Periyar, where boat rides provide the leisurely means for a safari: Wild elephants and other animals roam the banks of this lovely preserve.

Two days: Cochin. Proceed northwest by car to Cochin, and take two days to see this ancient port city, with its historic synagogue, curio shops, and Portuguese fort. At night, try to attend a Kathakali dance performance, where you can see how the dancers apply their complicated makeup before they mesmerize you with their hard-honed talent.

One or two days: Backwater Cruise. Drive to Alleppey early in the morning and cruise through some of Kerala's backwaters, past palm trees, shaded villages, and bright-green paddy fields. If you get hooked, take an overnight houseboat cruise. Back in the car, repair to a special beach resort just south of Kovalam.

Two days: Kovalam. Spend two nights at the Surya Samudra Beach Garden, tucked away in a cove on the Arabian Sea. Swim, have an ayurvedic massage, and loll about; you can even study yoga and meditation here. Fly out from nearby Trivandrum.

Swan Tours' Choice

No two people agree on what makes a perfect holiday or a vacation, but it's nice to know what others have experienced. Below are some suggestions.

Ancient India Wonders

Cave temples, ajanta and ellora.

Dating back more than 2,000 years, these monolithic temples rank among the wonders of the ancient world. Monks and artisans carved whole cities of them into solid rock, decorating some with lavish frescoes and profusely carved statues.

Hampi, Karnataka

This ruined city was the center of the largest Hindu empire in South India prior to the 16th century. A jumble of vast stone temples, elephant stables, barracks, and palaces, it's an awesome spectacle.

Sun Temple, Konark

The Sun Temple was built in the form of the sun god Surya's chariot, its 24 giant wheels pulled by seven horses. Every inch is carved with some of the most fantastic sculptures in India: mythical animals, erotic couplings, and whimsical scenes from daily life.

Taj Mahal, Agra

Resplendent in soft white marble and resonant with a bittersweet love story, the Taj lives up to its reputation. Both the photogenic exterior and the quiet, exquisitely decorated interior leave a lingering sense of peace and wonder.

Temples, Khajuraho

Hinduism under the Chandelas drew no strict boundary between sacred and profane. Khajuraho's 9th- to 12th-century temples have some of the best sculptures in India: sinuous, twisting forms of virile men and voluptuous women, throbbing with life, tension, and conflict.

Unforgettable Scenes in India

Backwaters, kerala.

To see life in Kerala at a Keralite pace, float slowly through its inland waterways. Gliding past graceful coconut palms and blindingly green paddy fields, you'll see tile-roof houses with canoes moored outside, tiny waterfront churches, and people washing themselves and their clothes in the river.

Chowpatty Beach and Marine Drive, Bombay

Bombay's setting is part of what makes it so intoxicating. Chowpatty Beach is a taste of the Bombay carnival, with vendors, food stalls, and rides. Walk east along perfectly curved Marine Drive for a lingering encounter with the incredible geography and with locals of every stripe.

Ganges River at dawn, Varanasi

The rising sun casts a dark-gold glow on the city devout Hindus hold most dear. Pilgrims and devotees perform ablutions on the riverbank, and temples begin to whirr into action. Climb to the roof of the Alamgir Mosque for a sweeping view of the city along the river's languid curve.

Soaring out of Rajasthan's Thar Desert like a giant sand castle, Jaisalmer is resplendent in golden sand-stone. The way light plays against this ancient city is magical. Approach slowly to savor the view of carved spires and palaces jutting above the fortress wall.

North Calcutta

History is palpable in the comparatively new city of Calcutta, founded by the British in 1690. Wander the charming, European-tinged streets of this old section for an immersion in the city's mixture of Western, Bengali, and Muslim elements, from mansions to bookstalls to pungent bazaars.

Famous Restaurants in India

Fort cochin, cochin.

Bamboo and traditional furnishings give this outdoor restaurant the feel of a Keralite cottage. The day's catch is wheeled before you in a wooden cart, and your choice is cooked specially for you—simply grilled or exquisitely curried.

Khyber, Bombay

A maze of rooms on three floors, Khyber is designed in a cozy Himalayan style and superbly decorated with murals by local artists. The kitchen serves pungent, delectable Northwest Frontier food that you won't forget in a hurry.

La Rochelle and Wine Bar, Delhi

The chef in this elegant restaurant lives up to his nickname, Picasso: His East-West cuisine is so beautiful that it's almost painful to disturb your food, but natural ingredients and creative light preparations push you over the edge.

Park Baluchi, Delhi

North Indian barbecue inspires new superlatives at this wooded restaurant in the village of Hauz Khas. Incredibly delicate kebabs are followed by traditional and creative Baluchi dishes.

Vishalla, Ahmedabad

Snake charmers, folk musicians, and flickering lantern shadows cast an aura of magic at this outdoor restaurant, a re-created Gujarati village where you sit on straw mats and feast on superb local fare served on banana leaves.

Luxury Hotels in India

Castle mandawa, shekhavati.

Towering high above its town, this rugged 15th-century fort offers large, airy rooms with period furniture. After a candlelight dinner in the breeze, sip tea on the terrace and behold the town and Rajasthan desert spreading out below.

Lake Palace, Udaipur

This 250-year-old palace floats like a vision of white marble in the middle of Lake Pichola, oozing history and romance. The suites are colorfully opulent, and most rooms have lake views.

Neemrana Fort Palace, near Shekha vati

Rooms in this 15th-century fort are furnished with antiques and decorate with Rajput handicrafts. Wooden latticework screens, cusped arches, niches, and gleaming pillars abound. Forget phones and TVs—relax and watch peacocks and parrots from the balconies and court-yards.

Surya Samudra, Kovalam

This rambling, secluded resort overlooks the Arabian Sea and offers a full range of ayurvedic treatments. Most rooms are in stunningly restored wooden homes, each with a carved facade and spacious open-air bath-room.

Tai Mahal, Bombay

India's most famous hotel, this Victorian Gothic extravaganza looks past the Gateway of India to the Arabian Sea. Built in 1903, its stunning brown-stone exterior, with rows of jutting white balconies, has made it a Bombay land-mark in its own right.
