A Deuter Backpack Review: The Deuter Transit 50

The Deuter Transit 50 is the Deuter Backpack Geared Toward the Urban Explorer

The Deuter Transit 50 is sleek, large, breathable, and comfortable. Plus, the color accents around the zippers make a nice touch. This Deuter backpack has all the necessary features you are looking for in a travel backpack, including extra back padding, a suspension system that your shoulders will thank you for, and numerous zipper compartments to keep your belongings organized. Plus, the pack comes with an additional daypack that easily latches onto the front of this Deuter backpack .

The one thing about this backpack that we should mention up front is that the rain cover will need to be purchased separately. Also, the bag only sometimes fits into the overhead bin on the airplane. If the pack is loaded down, it does not fit with ease into the bins. However, when the bag is not completely packed, there is a good chance that you can carry it onboard with you. We figured it was best to let you know this up front in case these things make or break your decision to purchase the Deuter Transit 50. If you are still interested (and there are plenty of reasons to stay interested) then continue reading our Deuter Transit 50 review.

A Little About Deuter Backpacks

Deuter Backpacks

Deuter has been around for a long time. Since 1898, to be exact. The company focuses on making high-quality outdoor products for outdoorsy travelers. Those who ache to be sitting in front of campfires, skiing down mountains, hiking through trails, pitching tents, and exploring the great big world we live in will appreciate Deuter backpacks. These packs are designed to make outdoor adventures as lightweight and exciting as possible. When looking at the Deuter Transit 50 backpack we appreciate that this backpack is geared toward the urban explorer just as much (if not more) than the trail explorer.

Having a backpack that is high-quality makes all the difference. The Deuter Transit 50 is a medium size travel backpack with many features and benefits. Travelers can use the Transit 50 on outdoor mountain adventures and city adventures. Whether you are backpacking through South America or backpacking through Europe, this pack is great because of its size and the detachable daypack. Travelers can leave the main 50L backpack in their hostel or hotel room and wander into the city with only their daypack. For more information on the key features and functions of this Deuter backpack, stay tuned.

Deuter Transit 50 Features & Benefits

The Deuter Transit 50 Breakdown

At a 50L gear capacity, this bag is a decent medium size travel backpack. The dimensions of the bag are 25 x 13 x 10 inches. The Deuter Transit 50 weighs in at 5 pounds and is a unisex bag. The material of the backpack is made of 95% Polyester and 5% Nylon. The fabric is very resistant, even when going through the rough process of baggage handling. The pack also includes a removable daypack, which is ideal for the urban explorer. The only color option this bag comes in is the grey/green color combination.

U-Shaped Zip Compartment

The main compartment of the backpack opens suitcase style, rather than via a top opening. This feature of the Transit 50 makes it very easy to pack and unpack your belongings. When you need to quickly find an item in your backpack, you no longer have to unpack all your belongings in order to find it. The U-shaped design is appreciated by all travelers. Particularly when you are interested in purchasing a backpack that is 50L or more, you don't want to hassle of rummaging to the very bottom of your pack to find items you are looking for. Plus, if you are into packing with packing cubes, then you can do so with this travel backpack. Packing cubes store nicely within the U-shaped zip compartment.

Shoulder Strap Turns Backpack into Duffle Bag

This bag is more than a backpack. It can also be carried like a duffle bag with the easily attachable and removable shoulder strap. Talk about versatility. This feature of the Deuter Transit 50 is very practical when you want to change up your carrying style.

Stowaway Shoulder Straps

With this Deuter backpack, travelers have the ability to stowaway the shoulder straps, which ensures that they do not get caught up in anything during your travels. This is especially helpful when traveling through the airport. Travelers can simply stowaway shoulder straps and buckets with ease before boarding the plane.

This is also convenient for when travelers want to carry the backpack via single shoulder strap, like a duffle bag. Store all those extra straps into the back compartment and you can haul your pack across your chest in duffle bag fashion.

External Compression Straps

The side compressions straps are ideal to compress belongings when your pack is full. Instead of having a bulky turtle shell on your back, you can cinch everything down with the external compression straps.

Adjustable Suspension System

The shoulder straps on the Transit 50 are adjustable, which allow travelers to find the most comfortable fit for them. The pack's weight is also distributed from shoulders to hips, so backpackers can strap on this backpack without killing their shoulders.

Two Grab Handles

There are two grab handles on this backpack. The locations include at the top of the bag and on the side. These durable handles ensure that travelers can easily pick up and transport their bag.

Zippered Bottom Compartment

The zippered bottom compartment is a convenient addition to this Deuter backpack. This spacious compartment is a great way to keep dirty clothes/shoes or wet clothes/shoes separate from your clean and dry belongings in the main compartment. The bottom compartment can also be a useful space to store lightweight jackets and other travel items.

Breathable Foam Back

You don't want a back full of sweat when exploring a new place. This Deuter backpack has a foam back that is cushioned with comfort. The back-padding is also designed to be very breathable.

Detachable Daypack

On day trips, hauling the massive 50L pack is simply unnecessary. On those days, just take the daypack exploring with you! The detachable daypack is 12L in size. Store cameras, travel journals , wallets, and any other travel essentials into this lightweight pack.

What Travelers Are Saying About the Deuter Transit 50

The Transit 50 is larger than you think. Most travelers are surprised by the size of the bag, even though 50L is not super big compared to 70+L bags. Apart from the backpack's size, the great majority of travelers report that they would purchase this product again in a heartbeat. They love the storage compartments and the backpack to duffle bag feature.

Alternative Travel Backpacks

Osprey farpoint.

Osprey Farpoint backpacks

The Osprey Farpoint travel backpack comes in three sizes–40L, 55L, and 70L. If you are looking for a pack that is carry-on friendly, consider the Osprey Farpoint 40. You may have luck carrying on the Deuter Transit 50, but like we mentioned, when the Transit 50 is stuffed to max capacity it will most likely not fit in the overhead bin. With the Osprey Farpoint 40, you can rest assured that your backpack will be carry-on compatible.

If you are looking for a pack that holds more than the Deuter Transit 50, consider the Osprey Farpoint 70. No matter what size you select, the Osprey Farpoint is ideal for mountain adventures and city adventures. These backpacks have a spacious main compartment, mesh exterior pockets for water bottles and snacks, an internal laptop and tablet sleeve, a suspension system that transfers to load from harness to hipbelt, and so many more neat features. Much like the Deuter Transit 50, the Osprey Farpoint backpacks are ideal for the urban explorer.

Patagonia Black Hole Backpack

Black Hole Backpack

The look of the Patagonia Black Hole backpack is sleek and stylish. With a waterproof laminate finish, this travel backpack is more than just good looks. The bag can also put up with harsh weather conditions. The Patagonia Black Hole is faithful to keep your clothing, electronics, and other belongings dry even when buckets of rainfall come pouring down on this pack. When traveling, the most unpredictable thing can be the weather. If you don't want to get stuck with damp clothes, then the Patagonia Black Hole backpack is the waterproof pack to consider. In addition, this bag is made of lightweight material and sits comfortably on the hips of the one carrying the pack.

Final Thoughts on the Deuter Transit 50

To carry heavy weight in a light way, consider purchasing the Deuter Transit 50. This travel backpack is great for outdoor expeditions, but is mainly tailored toward the urban explorer. The detachable daypack is a convenient addition that makes wander through a new city an easy and lightweight task. This pack is also unique because it can be carried like a duffle bag if you wish. The additional shoulder strap gives this bag versatility. Travelers can choose to wear the Transit 50 like a backpack, or like a duffle bag when they attach the shoulder strap.

In addition, with so many internal and external compartments to store belongings, travelers can pack in an organized fashion. The U-shaped zip compartment allows for items to be easily retrieved. No more rummaging to the very bottom of the pack (and messing up your neat organization system) to locate an item. Overall, we and many other travelers agree that the Deuter Transit 50 is a backpack worth considering.

Deuter transit 40 | overhead travel luggage perfection.

December 4, 2018 by Erik Meisner Leave a Comment

Transit 40

I’m a traveler, adventurist and part-time explorer. Well, at least that’s how I see myself. Whether traveling to foreign countries or domestically, having the proper luggage remains a key factor. Unfortunately, there is no “one-size-fits-all” luggage. Because of this, the storage area under my stairs is chalked full of various sized bags for different missions. Large gear duffels for SCUBA or ski trips. Bombproof rollers for medium range trips. And now the Deuter Transit 40 for those weekend getaways where you don’t require much gear at all. Or don’t want the hassle and expense of checking luggage.

Deuter , a German company known for their high-end trekking and climbing packs, has a rich 120-year history. Currently, they offer packs in the following categories; Winter, Daypack , Trekking , Family, Climbing, Travel, Bike and Hiking. The Transit 40 is the smallest of seven packs found in the Travel category . And the smallest of three within the “ Transit ” model. Designed to fit into the overhead storage compartment on commercial aircraft, the Transit 40 maintains a sleek design profile with several grab and carry options.

Transit 40

Deuter Transit 40 Features:

Deuter includes many compulsory features found on common travel packs. Like an organizer panel for small item storage. Writing implements, flashlight, passport, notebook and even airline tickets for those old folks that still insist on printing them. A padded laptop/tablet sleeve that can accommodate up to a 17″ notebook is accessed from the top. And a large main compartment opens via a heavy duty “U shaped” YKK zipper. Another nice feature for “type A” personalities like myself, are two adjustable clothing straps. I like to keep my clothes as wrinkle free as possible and these straps keep everything in place while moving.

Transit 40

Another key feature for frequent travelers is the isolated bottom pocket. This zippered compartment is perfect for keeping dirty footwear separate from clothing. Or stowing a jacket for quick access. Additionally, the bottom pocket divider can be opened up to increase the main compartment volume. On the outside of the Transit 40 , there are three different pockets. A mesh water bottle pocket on the left side, good for bottled water but not much larger. A similar sized zippered pocket on the opposite flank is good for electronics chargers, cords and other small items. Finally, a vertical slash pocket in the center of the pack is where I stash my Bose Headphones for quick access.

Transit 40

Carry options:

Transporting the Transit 40 can be handled several ways. The most obvious is with the Aircontact System. This padded back allows airflow to help prevent a sweaty back when using the padded shoulder straps. An adjustable sternum strap along with a stowable padded hip belt help fine-tune and distribute the load comfortably. Deuter uses an X-Frame to maintain the shape and contour of the Transit 40 . I also found a rigid plastic panel along the back that I ended up removing. Placing my Crye Precision Ballistic panel in its place. Finally, a hidden panel on the bottom can be zipped up concealing the shoulder straps while a removable briefcase strap can be used for alternate carry.

Final thoughts:

There are many features I like about this backpack and not much I don’t. It works perfectly for a quick warm weather get-away or a weekend trip. I hate paying baggage fees so anything I can carry on the aircraft has my attention. The 600D exterior fabric is rugged enough to withstand the rigors of airline travel. Several carry options and handles make it easy to haul when not on your back. I only wish the zipper for the organizer pocket extended the full length of that compartment. Although I can live with the gray/green color way, a few different options would be welcome.

Despite the Transit 40 liter being the smallest of the three Transit models, it is the only one approved for overhead storage. The 50 and 65-liter packs are not, unfortunately. For longer trips, the “Traveller” and “Quantum” models offer packs ranging from 60-70 liters of volume. Take a look at the variety of offerings from this renowned pack manufacturer . And know that over 120 years of German expertise will be apparent in each model.

Deuter vs Osprey: An In Depth Backpack Comparison

So, you are thinking of buying a new backpack – either an Osprey or Deuter , but you don’t know which one is the best choice?

In this detailed comparison, I am going to show you what these backpacks have to offer, how they differ and which one would work better for you.

Rather than try to cover the whole range of packs from both these manufacturers, I will go over the most important features and give you some examples to help you figure things out.

It’s not an easy choice, I know, but my goal is to make it easier.

The first section is a detailed comparison of two popular hiking / trekking packs, but further down is another travel pack comparison of two popular options to give you another perspective. (You can use the Quick Navigation above to jump to each section).

Are you ready? Let’s dive right in.

Trekking Pack Comparison

When making a comparison like this, it pays to break things down into the main areas that are important to look at in a backpacking backpack purchase. I believe these are:

  • Durability (material)
  • Features (like pockets, wheels, handle)

Before you even start, you need to know what size pack you are thinking about. Both these companies offer backpacks in a variety of sizes, so the choice is ultimately up to you. Just remember, more space means more weight – both in material (of the pack) and in what you will carry.

To help you compare some of the packs, I will show you the difference in weight of some comparable packs . But remember, it is always a compromise when it comes to weight – more features or thicker more durable materials mean more weight. But, if those things are important, the trade off might just be worth it.

Let’s take the Osprey Atmos 50 for example, as it is one of Opsrey’s bestselling (and most awarded) packs . Let’s compare that with the Deuter ACT LITE 50 + 10 .

Osprey Atmos AG 50

Osprey Atmos

(Medium size which is 50L internal capacity)

Deuter ACT LITE 50 + 10

Deuter ACT Lite 50 + 10

3 lbs 13 oz

(Only one size)

Materials & Durability

In general, both Osprey and Deuter use quite similar (high durable and light) materials for their packs. However, they do differ a little and some of the features (like pockets) use quite different materials.

They are both quite smart in their designs and use the lightest materials where they can (ie. where the least wear/abrasions occur) and the heaviest materials where they count (like the bottom – as you put it down on rocks all the time :>).

Here is a quick comparison of two popular packs and their materials

Osprey Atmos 50

  • PES 600 Polyester
  • Dynajin 210 Nylon – Hard wearing 420 denier and 210 denier density nylon for the most heavily wearing sections
  • 210 Baby Rip / Bright RS – Lightweight 210 Nylon material often used on the top of packs
  • 100D x 630D Nylon Dobby for the majority of the backpack
  • 210D High Tenacity Nylon for accents
  • 420HD Nylon Packcloth – for the heavier wearing areas

Features & Purpose

When you talk about backpacks, it could be for hiking, walking, traveling, biking or just for work. So, rather than tell you that this pack is right for you – you have to see the kinds of “features” it includes (or does not have) and whether this is an issue for you.

Some people like to just stuff everything in one single compartment, while others like lots of places to organize their stuff. You have to figure out what you will use the pack for and what features you would like (or cannot live without).

Having said that, Deuter and Osprey do differ quite a lot on this front, so take a close look at the specific packs you want and how they compare.

If you look at the Atmos vs the ACT lite for example, they are both great trekking/overnight hiking packs but Osprey adds quite a few more features (frills?) to their backpacks. Here is a quick side by side comparison:

  • Adjustable lid with 2 zippered pockets
  • Lid is removable and flapjacket covers main pack
  • Anti-gravity system with trampoline suspended mesh for maximum airflow and comfort
  • 2x side mesh pockets with dual loading (top and side) for easy grabbing while walking
  • Bottom compartment access ( with removable divider)
  • Stretch mesh front stow pocket
  • Stow-on-the-go trekking pole holders (for easy stow while scrambling or using hands for something)
  • Compression straps, ice axe holders, bungee cords etc
  • Adjustable lid with top pocket & inside (valuables) pocket
  • Extendable top main pack section (that is the +10 in the name of the pack)
  • Air Contact back padding – gives some airflow (more airflow can be found on the Futura Air Comfort packs )
  • 2x side mesh pockets (top loading only)
  • Bottom compartment access ( with zippable divider)

All in all, these backpacks are pretty similar in terms of size, access (top and bottom)  and main features but they differ in a few areas too.

The Osprey backpacks often have removable lids which gives you lots of flexibility for pack size, and also using the lid for other purposes. The Deuter has the expandable top section (the +10L) with the adjustable (but not removable) lid to accommodate that extra gear.

Osprey goes all out on the frills with the two-sided access to the drink bottle mesh pockets, the stow-and-go trekking pole holder and even an integrated whistle on the sternum strap clip. They seem to squeeze every inch out of their packs in terms of usability – often solving niggling problems that I have had with backpacks for years.

Harness & Sizing

There is also a difference in approach to sizing and adjustment of the harness – Osprey often offers various sizes  (S, M, L) with smaller adjustments in the harness. But it depends on the model (when you compare the Atmos and Aether  they have quite different systems). Deuter uses a vari-quick system where you can raise or lower the harness to suit various height people, but they have no sizes as such.

Although these two models (ACT and Atmos) have quite different ventilation systems (the Osprey Anit-gravity is way better) you can also check the Futura models which have more of a suspended trampoline mesh for ventilation – so are more comparable on this front (after all, Deuter invented this idea in the first place!).

Both the Osprey and the Deuter packs are not on the cheap end of the spectrum because they make quality gear that is going to last you a while (some of my Deuter packs are over 15 years old and only a buckle has been replaced).

In terms of price they are quite similar, but checking Amazon I can see that these two models (Atmos and ACT Lite) are a little different. The Atmos 50 is usually a bit over $200, while the ACT Lite is under $200. This can vary over time with discounts and depending on where you get your pack of course.

Travel Pack Comparison

Osprey Farpoint 40 vs Deuter Transit 40

Osprey Farpoint 40

  • Stowable shoulder/hip straps
  • Large internal storage compartment for easy packing (with full-length lid-side mesh zipper pocket)
  • Padded side and top grab handles + shoulder strap
  • 2x front mesh pockets (for water bottles)
  • 2x internal load compression straps + 2x front compression straps
  • Separate padded laptop sleeve (15″) + tablet pocket including extra space (at front)
  • Lockable zippers with well-designed pulls/tabs
  • Weight: 3lb 3 oz
  • Size: S/M 20 x 14 x 8 inches, M/L 21 x 14 x 9 inches

Deuter Transit 40

  • Stowable shoulder/hip straps
  • Large internal storage compartment for easy packing
  • No front mesh pockets
  • 2x internal load compression straps (no outside compression straps)
  • Front organization pocket and smaller stash pocket
  • Separate padded laptop sleeve (15″) at rear with no specific spot for tablet
  • No lockable zippers but a lock can be used on the eyes of the zipper
  • Weight:  4 lbs 2 oz
  • Size:  22 / 13 / 9.8 Inch

These travel backpacks are perfect for someone who wants a hybrid pack that can be carries (in hand, or on shoulder) and as a backpack, but also stows the straps for when it is not needed (check-in or in the overhead bin).

The main differences are  in the weight (the Deuter Transit is nearly 1lb heavier), the laptop location (the Deuter is at the back, which is more secure and easier to carry) and a few other minor features (water bottle mesh pockets on the Osprey Farpoint ).

Which Brand Should You Choose?

Osprey has been the king of backpacks in the USA for decades. And on the other side of the globe from Germany, Deuter is almost everywhere (I live next door in Switzerland and have about 6 of them!).

Both of these manufacturers value quality and durability, so you won’t have too many issues there (and the backpacks will last for years/decades – I have one that is 15 years old already).

What the choice really comes down to is the following

  • Features vs Simplicity (Osprey tends to have lots more and often smarter features, but check the details because in the travel pack above, I think Deuter did a better job)
  • Harness (Deuter invented the trampoline mesh back, but Osprey have caught up – both have great harnesses now)
  • Price – Osprey usually tends to be about 10% or more expensive than Deuter

There is no right or wrong answer on this one, but I found Deuter to be simpler and more robust looking (and cheaper) and Osprey is fancier more feature-rich packs.

Hopefully, you will now be better informed to pick the right pack for you.

If you want a specific comparison – leave a comment and I will do my best to help out!

Backpack Review- Deuter Transit 65L

The next bag to fall prey to our backpack review is the Deuter Transit 65L.

So after David decided he loved the Osprey Porter (and I wasn’t too sure about that one), this is the bag we ordered to compare with it. When I took it out of the box I knew it was going to be hard to beat.

The bag is designed just like a hiking pack BUT for the traveler! So you get the perks of the bottom pocket- with the option to separate it or open to the main compartment, which is really nice for dirty clothes or shoes.

The main compartment has front panel access and because it was designed for the traveler, there is no top load access. All zippers can be secured to each other to prevent access to the bag.

The harness is completely padded and zips away for transit. It also has a removable duffel bag strap to ease carrying it when the harness is stored and last but not least, mesh pockets inside the bag for small items.

I was shocked again at the size of the 65L. I think the front panel access just makes so much of a difference in useable space.  One other thing I should mention is the detachable day bag.

It is pretty small, but I think we should be able to carry our 13″ MacBook in there if need be. So that is a nice addition- it also does not get included in the 65L sizing, so it’s a little extra.

NO big complaints with this bag! Except maybe the boring color! One we loaded this one down with weight it won hands down for comfort.

This is the bag David had planned to carry until he decided he liked the Deuter Traveller 70+10 Travel Pack more.

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe | Deuter Traveller 60 + 10 Review

Everyone has a different opinion about the best travel backpack for Europe , but few people have compared as many makes and models as me.  I have been traveling to Europe regularly for the past fifteen years, and in that time I’ve seen backpack technology flourish, travel trends change and my own travel backpack standards skyrocket.  Now that I’m a frequent, experienced traveler, I won’t settle for a subpar bag… which is why I recently invested in the Deuter 60 + 10 travel backpack, and I’m confident saying that it’s the best travel backpack for Europe, whether you’re on an epic Interrail journey or simply escaping on a shorty city break.

deuter transit travel

And now for a brief interlude.

This article is about the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 , which I believe is the best travel backpack for Europe.  Although the Deuter 60 + 10 model is designed for female backpackers , there is a companion travel backpack for men.  Check out the Deuter Transit 65 backpack , which is close in size to my favorite backpack, but with a slightly different design that better fits men’s frames.

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe: Deuter Traveler 60 + 10

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe - Deuter 60 + 10 Travel Backpack

By my count, I have traveled to thirty countries in Europe, ranging from Albania to the United Kingdom and everywhere in between.  I have tried traveling in Europe with three different backpacks (plus some suitcases) and I am confident in saying that the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 is the best travel backpack for Europe.  I have personally used this bag on several two-month trips in Europe (plus multiple trips to Central America, but we’re talking about Europe today!).

What makes this the best backpack for Europe travel?

First, the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 backpack is a front-loading travel backpack.   This means that it has a large, U-shaped zipper that wraps around the entire front panel (see below) .  This allows the backpack to open like a suitcase and you can easily see everything inside.  In my opinion, front-loading packs are far superior to their top-loading counterparts, which force you to blindly dig deep into the depths of your bag to find little objects that have sunk to the bottom.  As well, I’ve noticed that most front-loading packs are more secure than the top-loading backs that fasten with a drawstring (especially when you use a tiny luggage lock or mini carabiners to secure your zippers!).

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe - Deuter 60 + 10 Travel Backpack

Second, the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 is ergonomically designed for women’s bodies .  Unisex backpacks, and backpacks designed for men, often don’t fit women properly through the waist, hips and shoulders.  For most women who are 5’8″ and below, a travel backpack designed for women will usually be the best fit.  As you can see below, the hip belt is slightly curved to fit someone with a narrower waist and wider hips, and the shoulder straps are a little bit less wide than you’d see on a typical unisex backpack.  Of course, all of the straps are fully adjustable to fit your specific body shape (just remember to fill your pack before your start making adjustments).

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe - Deuter 60 + 10 Travel Backpack

Third, the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 appeals to my love of staying über-organized while traveling .  By my count (and I might have missed something), this travel backpack has six different compartments: the main, front-loading compartment, a separate bottom section (ideal for shoes and toiletries), three interior mesh compartments (I reserve one just for pads and tampons!) and one hidden zippered section on the front of the bag (this flat compartment is where I shove receipts after I check out from my hotel).  Similarly, the entire back of the bag can be hidden inside a zippered compartment, so you can safely hide the straps away when you check your bag on an airplane or bus (see below) .

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe - Deuter 60 + 10 Travel Backpack

Finally, I haven’t exactly explained what “60 + 10” means.  You see, the Deuter 60 + 10 travel backpack is actually two bags in one .  The first bag, or the main backpack, holds sixty liters of stuff.  To see what that looks like, keep reading as I walk you through the actual process of packing this 60-litre travel backpack.  The +10 refers to the detachable daypack , a ten-liter backpack that you can zip to the front of the bag when you’re not using it (below right) .  A huge bonus with this model is that the daypack can also be clipped on to the straps of the main bag, so that you can wear the daypack on your front when the backpack is on your bag (below left) .  Keeping your valuables on the front side of your body is one of the best ways to outsmart pickpockets and other petty thieves.

Packing Your Travel Backpack for Europe

I am a bit of an over-packer (did I ever tell you about the time I brought twenty bottles of perfume on my eight-day expedition across Mongolia’s Gobi Desert?) and I also love updating my wardrobe with local designs as I travel.  So, I need a fairly large backpack and I’m a terrible person to ask for packing tips, because I’ll always say, “Bring it all!  Better safe than sorry!”

To write this part of the review, I decided to defer to an expert in packing for Europe travel : Rick Steves.  I have previously reviewed his Barcelona guidebook and his Berlin guidebook (and I also recommend his overarching Europe guidebook for travelers heading to multiple countries).  Rick has published a Europe packing list , and I decided to see what that list would look like if it was placed inside the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 travel backpack.

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe - Deuter 60 + 10 Travel Backpack

Following Rick’s packing guidelines for Europe travel , I packed the following articles of clothing into the main compartment of my Deuter Traveller 60 + 10 travel backpack:

  • Five shirts (three t-shirts, one hoodie and one lightweight, long-sleeved top)
  • Two pairs of pants (my favorite leggings from Uniqlo and a pair of loose cotton pants)
  • Five pairs of underwear, two bras and two pairs of socks
  • One pair of running shoes (those are my “wear to do housework” inside shoes) and one pair of sandals
  • A North Face windbreaker
  • One pink scarf
  • One bathing suit
  • One nightgown

After packing all of those items into my bag, I would estimate that the backpack was only half full .  I didn’t need to use any of the internal or external compression straps, nor did I unzip the expansion zippers that add two extra inches of space, yet I certainly had lots more room to add more clothing (for example, I really like to travel with at least two dresses and a little cross-body purse for going out at night) and to do some shopping in Europe.

The Best Travel Backpack for Europe - Deuter 60 + 10 Travel Backpack

However, you need more than just clothes in your backpack when you go to Europe!  I then added the following necessities to the separate bottom compartment:

  • Large toiletry case
  • First-aid kit
  • Turkish cotton towel (my absolute favorites for Europe travel – I prefer these over microfiber towels as they are made from natural cotton, feel lovely on your skin and dry quickly).
  • Dual-voltage travel hairdryer

Again, there was still room to add more into the bag.  This lower section is where I would also slip my jewelry case and perhaps an extra pair of flip-flops for the hostel shower.

Next, I decided to pack the detachable daypack with the essentials that I always carry with me on the plane:

  • A laptop computer (I recently picked up a 14″ Asus Zenbook and I’m already loving it as my travel laptop – it’s impossibly lightweight and the battery lasts forever – I live in Canada and shopping via Amazon.com saved me a few hundred dollars over buying it through a Canadian site)
  • My favorite travel wallet ( choose from thirty-three colors! )
  • A clear bag with travel-sized toiletries
  • A guidebook so I can read about my destination en route

Deuter Traveller 6 + 10 | The Best Travel Backpack for Europe

The only thing that I didn’t pack into the daypack was my camera, because I was using it to take the photos!  Still, I had room for both a point-and-shoot and a DSLR in the daypack.

How to Buy a Travel Backpack for Europe

I would never suggest that you commit to a backpack without trying it on, as it can take some time to find a bag that feels good on your body .  If, like me, you don’t live in a big city with lots of outdoor shops, it’s usually easier to shop for travel backpacks online from sites with great return policies.

The Deuter Traveller 60 + 10 is available on Amazon , and is covered by Amazon’s standard thirty-day return policy .  If the bag isn’t a good match for your body or travel style, you can receive a full refund.

If you have any questions about this bag, or about traveling in Europe as a solo female traveler, don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments!

The Best Travel Backpacks for Europe – Some Alternatives

I will be the first to admit that the Deuter Traveller 60 + 10 travel backpack is definitely pricey.  However – you are paying for quality with this backpack.  Designed in Germany and solidly constructed with water-resistant materials, this bag could easily last for an entire decade of regular travel.

There are a number of other travel backpacks that are also suitable for travel in Europe.  I’ve highlighted four of the bags that I see most often when I’m traveling, studied their features and provided a link to their product pages on Amazon.  I won’t pretend I’ve tried all of these bags, but each is backed by a reputable brand name and each is popular on the European travel scene.

Top features of the AViANT Voyager 65+10

In addition to the right backpack, the right adjustement plays a decisive role for perfect wearing comfort. This means that models with back length adjustment should be adjusted precisely. Especially with loads of more than ten kilograms and long walking times, individual adjustment is crucial for wearing comfort. This is why we equip our models with VariQuick or VariSlide systems from a volume of 35 liters upwards.

CONTACT SYSTEM

The ergonomic back pads in the Contact system mould themselves to the contours of the back and thus distribute the weight of the load evenly. On the one hand, this protects your back and adds comfort, and on the other hand, it allows for loads to be easily carried close to the body. Free spaces between the pads create pleasant air ventilation, as well as the breathable and robust 3D Airmesh cover

G'day there!

Your wishlist:, transit 65 travel pack.

Close

Sorry! We're unable to get our hands on any more of these.

Details & specs.

It sure would be handy to be able to swing your suitcase over your shoulder when the streets are crowded right? Clearly, Deuter thought the same which is why they came out with the Transit 65. This opens up like a suitcase so it’s easy to pack and has a back system for easy transport – so you’ve got the best of both worlds.

Need to make it to the train station on time? No worries, the back of the Deuter Transit 40 unzips to reveal a back system so you can move your gear quickly in transit. The back system is adjustable and features padded mesh straps and stable aluminium frame and contoured hip belt for comfort and support when you’re lugging your load around.

The Transit 65 also comes with two grab handles and a detachable padded carry strap, so you’ll be able to lug your gear around with ease, no matter what situation you’re in. The main compartment has a U-shaped zip so you can open your pack up and have full access to all your stuff while the compression straps keep everything in its right place. Any dirty or wet clothes can be neatly stowed underneath in the separate bottom compartment. When you’re out and about in the day, just chuck your essentials on in the detachable day pack for a day out exploring.

When you’re jet-lagged or late for a flight, the last thing you want is to not be able to get you and your gear to your destination on time. Save yourself the stress and get an easy to use and carry travel pack like the Transit 65 by Deuter.

  • U-shaped zipped main compartment
  • Separate bottom compartment
  • Internal zippered pocket
  • 12L detachable backpack
  • Grab handles
  • Detachable padded carry strap
  • Adjustable, comfortable and concealable back system

Q&a's (4), is the main compartment 65l or is it 53l plus the 12l day back 1 answer.

G'day Emily,

The main compartment of the Deuter Transit 65 Travel Pack is 65L and then the day pack is an extra 12L.

I was wondering how water resistant this fabric was and/or whether it comes with a rain cover? 1 answer

I was wondering how water resistant this fabric was and/or whether it comes with a rain cover?

Gday David,

I've just had a look at Deuter's website, and it says that this fabric does have a PU coating which means it will offer some water resistance, but it wouldn't be waterproof as it isn't seam sealed and the zips are exposed.

I've also checked our stock downstairs and it doesn't come with a rain cover included. I hope this was helpful, David.

This Bag v Black Wolf Cedar Breaks 1 answer

Hi, Heading to Nepal for a couple of weeks and need to buy a bag for my wife. Not doing any serious trekking just might get lumped with our bag for a half day every now and then. Which bag do u suggest. Is Deuter better quality?

I've just had a look at both the Deuter Transit 65 Travel Pack and the Black Wolf Cedar Breaks Travel Pack. A couple of things worth noting between the two. The Black Wolf has a larger day pack (25L compared to 12L), which may come in handy. The Black Wolf also has a couple of locks that you can use to lock the zips. The Deuter is almost a whole kilo lighter, which will definitely be noticeable for you! Both come with limited lifetime warranties.

Day pack size? 1 answer

Hi Snowys Team, can you please tell me how many litres the daypack on this one is? Thanks!

I can't find where Deuter have listed the capacity for the day pack anywhere, however, I have gone and looked at the display stock and my guess would be that it's roughly a 10L capacity.

Out of stock, in transit..

Don't get too excited when the plane lands on your weekend getaway—you still have terribly crowded terminals and long lines to get through before you really feel that sun on your face. Lucky for you, Deuter's Transit 40 Backpack has multiple deployment carry systems so you can circumvent slow strollers, hail a taxi, or wait for luggage like a champ. The most innovative carry system has to be the padded back panel, shoulder straps, and waist belt for the same feel as Deuter's trekking backpack, and a zippered panel tucks that carry system away so you can carry it like regular luggage.

  • Convenient travel bag for weekend getaways
  • Deployable shoulder straps, waist belt, and padded back panel
  • Separate bottom compartment for shoes or sleeping bags
  • Organizer sleeves for laptops, electronics, and documents
  • Item #DTR005C
