The Deuter Transit 50 is the Deuter Backpack Geared Toward the Urban Explorer

The Deuter Transit 50 is sleek, large, breathable, and comfortable. Plus, the color accents around the zippers make a nice touch. This Deuter backpack has all the necessary features you are looking for in a travel backpack, including extra back padding, a suspension system that your shoulders will thank you for, and numerous zipper compartments to keep your belongings organized. Plus, the pack comes with an additional daypack that easily latches onto the front of this Deuter backpack .

The one thing about this backpack that we should mention up front is that the rain cover will need to be purchased separately. Also, the bag only sometimes fits into the overhead bin on the airplane. If the pack is loaded down, it does not fit with ease into the bins. However, when the bag is not completely packed, there is a good chance that you can carry it onboard with you. We figured it was best to let you know this up front in case these things make or break your decision to purchase the Deuter Transit 50. A Little About Deuter Backpacks

Deuter has been around for a long time. Since 1898, to be exact. The company focuses on making high-quality outdoor products for outdoorsy travelers. Those who ache to be sitting in front of campfires, skiing down mountains, hiking through trails, pitching tents, and exploring the great big world we live in will appreciate Deuter backpacks. These packs are designed to make outdoor adventures as lightweight and exciting as possible. When looking at the Deuter Transit 50 backpack we appreciate that this backpack is geared toward the urban explorer just as much (if not more) than the trail explorer.

Having a backpack that is high-quality makes all the difference. The Deuter Transit 50 is a medium size travel backpack with many features and benefits. Travelers can use the Transit 50 on outdoor mountain adventures and city adventures. Whether you are backpacking through South America or backpacking through Europe, this pack is great because of its size and the detachable daypack. Travelers can leave the main 50L backpack in their hostel or hotel room and wander into the city with only their daypack. Deuter Transit 50 Features & Benefits

The Deuter Transit 50 Breakdown

At a 50L gear capacity, this bag is a decent medium size travel backpack. The dimensions of the bag are 25 x 13 x 10 inches. The Deuter Transit 50 weighs in at 5 pounds and is a unisex bag. The material of the backpack is made of 95% Polyester and 5% Nylon. The fabric is very resistant, even when going through the rough process of baggage handling. The pack also includes a removable daypack, which is ideal for the urban explorer. The only color option this bag comes in is the grey/green color combination.

U-Shaped Zip Compartment

The main compartment of the backpack opens suitcase style, rather than via a top opening. This feature of the Transit 50 makes it very easy to pack and unpack your belongings. When you need to quickly find an item in your backpack, you no longer have to unpack all your belongings in order to find it. The U-shaped design is appreciated by all travelers. Particularly when you are interested in purchasing a backpack that is 50L or more, you don't want to hassle of rummaging to the very bottom of your pack to find items you are looking for. Plus, if you are into packing with packing cubes, then you can do so with this travel backpack. Packing cubes store nicely within the U-shaped zip compartment.

Shoulder Strap Turns Backpack into Duffle Bag

This bag is more than a backpack. It can also be carried like a duffle bag with the easily attachable and removable shoulder strap. Talk about versatility. This feature of the Deuter Transit 50 is very practical when you want to change up your carrying style.

Stowaway Shoulder Straps

With this Deuter backpack, travelers have the ability to stowaway the shoulder straps, which ensures that they do not get caught up in anything during your travels. This is especially helpful when traveling through the airport. Travelers can simply stowaway shoulder straps and buckets with ease before boarding the plane.

This is also convenient for when travelers want to carry the backpack via single shoulder strap, like a duffle bag. Store all those extra straps into the back compartment and you can haul your pack across your chest in duffle bag fashion.

External Compression Straps

The side compressions straps are ideal to compress belongings when your pack is full. Instead of having a bulky turtle shell on your back, you can cinch everything down with the external compression straps.

Adjustable Suspension System

The shoulder straps on the Transit 50 are adjustable, which allow travelers to find the most comfortable fit for them. The pack's weight is also distributed from shoulders to hips, so backpackers can strap on this backpack without killing their shoulders.

Two Grab Handles

There are two grab handles on this backpack. The locations include at the top of the bag and on the side. These durable handles ensure that travelers can easily pick up and transport their bag.

Zippered Bottom Compartment

The zippered bottom compartment is a convenient addition to this Deuter backpack. This spacious compartment is a great way to keep dirty clothes/shoes or wet clothes/shoes separate from your clean and dry belongings in the main compartment. The bottom compartment can also be a useful space to store lightweight jackets and other travel items.

Breathable Foam Back

You don't want a back full of sweat when exploring a new place. This Deuter backpack has a foam back that is cushioned with comfort. The back-padding is also designed to be very breathable.

Detachable Daypack

On day trips, hauling the massive 50L pack is simply unnecessary. On those days, just take the daypack exploring with you! The detachable daypack is 12L in size. Store cameras, travel journals , wallets, and any other travel essentials into this lightweight pack.

The Transit 50 is larger than you think. Most travelers are surprised by the size of the bag, even though 50L is not super big compared to 70+L bags. Apart from the backpack's size, the great majority of travelers report that they would purchase this product again in a heartbeat. If you are looking for a pack that holds more than the Deuter Transit 50, consider the Osprey Farpoint 70. No matter what size you select, the Osprey Farpoint is ideal for mountain adventures and city adventures. These backpacks have a spacious main compartment, mesh exterior pockets for water bottles and snacks, an internal laptop and tablet sleeve, a suspension system that transfers to load from harness to hipbelt, and so many more neat features. Shopping cart items, durable road warrior: the deuter transit 50.

Overall, the bag design is very clean and free of all the extraneous add-on’s that come with a typical backpack. I have found that too many travel bags come with an over-abundance of compression straps, ice ax loops, and ‘bells and whistles’ that are great for hard-core trekking or technical climbing, but generally just get in the way for more common, more modest adventure travel (and those straps always seem to get stuck in overhead bins, getting in/out of vehicles, and just generally prove to be a pain). The Transit 50 provides just enough additional features – just the ones you actually need.

The design has also found a comfortable home between being a real backpack, with beefy suspension system (including well-padded hip belt, sternum strap, and contoured shoulder straps) to make it comfortable and adjustable with heavier loads, yet still being truly considerate of travel features, such as multiple, durable, grab handles around the bag for easy snatching off buses, luggage carousels, etc.

The capacity of the bag is ample, swallowing a large load of ski gear without a problem, and I really enjoyed the uncluttered, spacious size of the main compartment along and the ability to actually zip the front opening completely open in order to most easily pack and load the Transit 50 . The inclusion of an honest-to-goodness separate bottom compartment was a nice surprise too. It would be perfect for a light sleeping system, or for separating your gear (keeping muddy hiking boots and used trail socks away from clean clothes, for example).

The removable day pack is a great addition for travel and I found it perfect for day trips and side hikes. I was able to keep my bulkier carry-on behind, still full of all the power cords, travel pillow and other items I need to get through long-haul flights, and just run out the door with the Transit 50 ’s daypack over my shoulder with water bottle, extra layer, maps, camera and other immediate essentials. I was also pleasantly surprised with the very simple, yet durable, single-zipper attachment system that connects the daypack to the main bag.

While the achilles heel of other travel bags that I’ve worn out in the past was often a weak zipper system, the Transit 50 ’s heavy zippers truly inspired confidence in their potential for long-term durability. I can’t tell you how many very frustrating moments I’ve had when some cool-looking molded rubber pull falls apart, leaving only the zipper head to open and close the bag. So I’m thankful for the Transit 50’s use of aluminum zipper pulls.

Perhaps the only concern I have for the Transit 50 is the small pocket outside the daypack. While it’s thoughtful to add that pocket, I found the opening to be a bit too tight when the bag is full, making it difficult to get in and out. Overall though, a minor concern for a bag that literally brought smiles to my face while on the road.

DEUTER TRANSIT 40 | Overhead travel luggage perfection

I’m a traveler , adventurist and part-time explorer . Well, at least that’s how I see myself. Whether traveling to foreign countries or domestically, having the proper luggage remains a key factor. Unfortunately, there is no “one-size-fits-all” luggage. Because of this, the storage area under my stairs is chalked full of various sized bags for different missions. Large gear duffels for SCUBA or ski trips. Bombproof rollers for medium range trips. And now the Deuter Transit 40 for those weekend getaways where you don’t require much gear at all. Or don’t want the hassle and expense of checking luggage.

Deuter, a German company known for their high-end trekking and climbing packs, has a rich 120-year history. The Transit 40 is the smallest of seven packs found in the Travel category . And the smallest of three within the “Transit” model. Designed to fit into the overhead storage compartment on commercial aircraft, the Transit 40 maintains a sleek design profile with several grab and carry options.

Deuter Transit 40 Features:

Deuter includes many compulsory features found on common travel packs. Like an organizer panel for small item storage. Writing implements, flashlight, passport, notebook and even airline tickets for those old folks that still insist on printing them. A padded laptop/tablet sleeve that can accommodate up to a 17″ notebook is accessed from the top. And a large main compartment opens via a heavy duty “U shaped” YKK zipper. Another nice feature for “type A” personalities like myself, are two adjustable clothing straps. I like to keep my clothes as wrinkle free as possible and these straps keep everything in place while moving.

Another key feature for frequent travelers is the isolated bottom pocket. This zippered compartment is perfect for keeping dirty footwear separate from clothing. Or stowing a jacket for quick access. Additionally, the bottom pocket divider can be opened up to increase the main compartment volume. On the outside of the Transit 40, there are three different pockets. A mesh water bottle pocket on the left side, good for a bottle of water but nothing much larger. A similar sized zippered pocket on the opposite flank is good for electronics chargers, cords and other small items. Finally, a vertical slash pocket in the center of the pack is where I stash my Bose Headphones for quick access.

Carry options:

Transporting the Transit 40 can be handled several ways. The most obvious is with the Aircontact System. This padded back allows airflow to help prevent a sweaty back when using the padded shoulder straps. An adjustable sternum strap along with a stowable padded hip belt help fine-tune and distribute the load comfortably. Deuter uses an X-Frame to maintain the shape and contour of the Transit 40. I also found a rigid plastic panel along the back that I ended up removing. Placing my Crye Precision Ballistic panel in its place. Finally, a hidden panel on the bottom can be zipped up concealing the shoulder straps while a removable briefcase strap can be used for alternate carry.

Final thoughts:

There are many features I like about this backpack and not much I don’t. It works perfectly for a quick warm weather get-away or a weekend trip. I hate paying baggage fees so anything I can carry on the aircraft has my attention. The 600D exterior fabric is rugged enough to withstand the rigors of airline travel. Several carry options and handles make it easy to haul when not on your back. I only wish the zipper for the organizer pocket extended the full length of that compartment. Although I can live with the gray/green color way, a few different options would be welcome.

Despite the Transit 40 liter being the smallest of the three Transit models, it is the only one approved for overhead storage. The 50 and 65-liter packs are not, unfortunately. For longer trips, the “Traveller” and “Quantum” models offer packs ranging from 60-70 liters of volume. Take a look at the variety of offerings from this renowned pack manufacturer . Backpack Review- Deuter Transit 65L

The next bag to fall prey to our backpack review is the Deuter Transit 65L.

So after David decided he loved the Osprey Porter (and I wasn’t too sure about that one), this is the bag we ordered to compare with it. When I took it out of the box I knew it was going to be hard to beat.

The bag is designed just like a hiking pack BUT for the traveler! So you get the perks of the bottom pocket- with the option to separate it or open to the main compartment, which is really nice for dirty clothes or shoes.

The main compartment has front panel access and because it was designed for the traveler, there is no top load access. All zippers can be secured to each other to prevent access to the bag.

The harness is completely padded and zips away for transit. It also has a removable duffel bag strap to ease carrying it when the harness is stored and last but not least, mesh pockets inside the bag for small items.

I was shocked again at the size of the 65L. I think the front panel access just makes so much of a difference in useable space.  One other thing I should mention is the detachable day bag.

It is pretty small, but I think we should be able to carry our 13″ MacBook in there if need be. So that is a nice addition- it also does not get included in the 65L sizing, so it’s a little extra.

NO big complaints with this bag! Except maybe the boring color! One we loaded this one down with weight it won hands down for comfort.

This is the bag David had planned to carry until he decided he liked the Deuter Traveller 70+10 Travel Pack more.

I’m a traveler, adventurist and part-time explorer. Well, at least that’s how I see myself. Whether traveling to foreign countries or domestically, having the proper luggage remains a key factor. Unfortunately, there is no “one-size-fits-all” luggage. Because of this, the storage area under my stairs is chalked full of various sized bags for different missions. Large gear duffels for SCUBA or ski trips. Bombproof rollers for medium range trips. And now the Deuter Transit 40 for those weekend getaways where you don’t require much gear at all. Or don’t want the hassle and expense of checking luggage.

Deuter , a German company known for their high-end trekking and climbing packs, has a rich 120-year history. Currently, they offer packs in the following categories; Winter, Daypack , Trekking , Family, Climbing, Travel, Bike and Hiking. The Transit 40 is the smallest of seven packs found in the Travel category . And the smallest of three within the “ Transit ” model. Designed to fit into the overhead storage compartment on commercial aircraft, the Transit 40 maintains a sleek design profile with several grab and carry options.

Deuter vs Osprey: An In Depth Backpack Comparison

So, you are thinking of buying a new backpack – either an Osprey or Deuter , but you don’t know which one is the best choice?

In this detailed comparison, I am going to show you what these backpacks have to offer, how they differ and which one would work better for you.

Rather than try to cover the whole range of packs from both these manufacturers, I will go over the most important features and give you some examples to help you figure things out.

It’s not an easy choice, I know, but my goal is to make it easier.

The first section is a detailed comparison of two popular hiking / trekking packs, but further down is another travel pack comparison of two popular options to give you another perspective. (You can use the Quick Navigation above to jump to each section).

Are you ready? Let’s dive right in.

Trekking Pack Comparison

When making a comparison like this, it pays to break things down into the main areas that are important to look at in a backpacking backpack purchase. I believe these are:

• Durability (material)
• Features (like pockets, wheels, handle)

Before you even start, you need to know what size pack you are thinking about. Both these companies offer backpacks in a variety of sizes, so the choice is ultimately up to you. Just remember, more space means more weight – both in material (of the pack) and in what you will carry.

To help you compare some of the packs, I will show you the difference in weight of some comparable packs . But remember, it is always a compromise when it comes to weight – more features or thicker more durable materials mean more weight. But, if those things are important, the trade off might just be worth it.

Let’s take the Osprey Atmos 50 for example, as it is one of Opsrey’s bestselling (and most awarded) packs . Let’s compare that with the Deuter ACT LITE 50 + 10 .

Materials & Durability

In general, both Osprey and Deuter use quite similar (high durable and light) materials for their packs. However, they do differ a little and some of the features (like pockets) use quite different materials.

They are both quite smart in their designs and use the lightest materials where they can (ie. where the least wear/abrasions occur) and the heaviest materials where they count (like the bottom – as you put it down on rocks all the time :>).

Here is a quick comparison of two popular packs and their materials

Osprey Atmos 50

• PES 600 Polyester
• Dynajin 210 Nylon – Hard wearing 420 denier and 210 denier density nylon for the most heavily wearing sections
• 210 Baby Rip / Bright RS – Lightweight 210 Nylon material often used on the top of packs
• 100D x 630D Nylon Dobby for the majority of the backpack
• 210D High Tenacity Nylon for accents
• 420HD Nylon Packcloth – for the heavier wearing areas

Features & Purpose

When you talk about backpacks, it could be for hiking, walking, traveling, biking or just for work. So, rather than tell you that this pack is right for you – you have to see the kinds of “features” it includes (or does not have) and whether this is an issue for you.

Some people like to just stuff everything in one single compartment, while others like lots of places to organize their stuff. You have to figure out what you will use the pack for and what features you would like (or cannot live without).

Having said that, Deuter and Osprey do differ quite a lot on this front, so take a close look at the specific packs you want and how they compare. 

If you look at the Atmos vs the ACT lite for example, they are both great trekking/overnight hiking packs but Osprey adds quite a few more features (frills?) to their backpacks. Here is a quick side by side comparison:

• Adjustable lid with 2 zippered pockets
• Lid is removable and flapjacket covers main pack
• Anti-gravity system with trampoline suspended mesh for maximum airflow and comfort
• 2x side mesh pockets with dual loading (top and side) for easy grabbing while walking
• Bottom compartment access ( with removable divider) 
• Stretch mesh front stow pocket
• Stow-on-the-go trekking pole holders (for easy stow while scrambling or using hands for something)
• Compression straps, ice axe holders, bungee cords etc
• Adjustable lid with top pocket & inside (valuables) pocket
• Extendable top main pack section (that is the +10 in the name of the pack)
• Air Contact back padding – gives some airflow (more airflow can be found on the Futura Air Comfort packs )
• 2x side mesh pockets (top loading only)
• Bottom compartment access ( with zippable divider)

All in all, these backpacks are pretty similar in terms of size, access (top and bottom)  and main features but they differ in a few areas too.

The Osprey backpacks often have removable lids which gives you lots of flexibility for pack size, and also using the lid for other purposes. The Deuter has the expandable top section (the +10L) with the adjustable (but not removable) lid to accommodate that extra gear.

Osprey goes all out on the frills with the two-sided access to the drink bottle mesh pockets, the stow-and-go trekking pole holder and even an integrated whistle on the sternum strap clip. They seem to squeeze every inch out of their packs in terms of usability – often solving niggling problems that I have had with backpacks for years.

Harness & Sizing

There is also a difference in approach to sizing and adjustment of the harness – Osprey often offers various sizes  (S, M, L) with smaller adjustments in the harness. But it depends on the model (when you compare the Atmos and Aether  they have quite different systems). Deuter uses a vari-quick system where you can raise or lower the harness to suit various height people, but they have no sizes as such. 

Although these two models (ACT and Atmos) have quite different ventilation systems (the Osprey Anit-gravity is way better) you can also check the Futura models which have more of a suspended trampoline mesh for ventilation – so are more comparable on this front (after all, Deuter invented this idea in the first place!).

Both the Osprey and the Deuter packs are not on the cheap end of the spectrum because they make quality gear that is going to last you a while (some of my Deuter packs are over 15 years old and only a buckle has been replaced).

In terms of price they are quite similar, but checking Amazon I can see that these two models (Atmos and ACT Lite) are a little different. The Atmos 50 is usually a bit over $200, while the ACT Lite is under $200. This can vary over time with discounts and depending on where you get your pack of course.

Osprey Farpoint 40 vs Deuter Transit 40

• Separate padded laptop sleeve (15″) at rear with no specific spot for tablet
• No lockable zippers but a lock can be used on the eyes of the zipper
• Weight:  4 lbs 2 oz
• Size:  22 / 13 / 9.8 Inch

These travel backpacks are perfect for someone who wants a hybrid pack that can be carries (in hand, or on shoulder) and as a backpack, but also stows the straps for when it is not needed (check-in or in the overhead bin).

The main differences are  in the weight (the Deuter Transit is nearly 1lb heavier), the laptop location (the Deuter is at the back, which is more secure and easier to carry) and a few other minor features (water bottle mesh pockets on the Osprey Farpoint ).

Which Brand Should You Choose?

Osprey has been the king of backpacks in the USA for decades. And on the other side of the globe from Germany, Deuter is almost everywhere (I live next door in Switzerland and have about 6 of them!).

Both of these manufacturers value quality and durability, so you won’t have too many issues there (and the backpacks will last for years/decades – I have one that is 15 years old already).

What the choice really comes down to is the following

• Features vs Simplicity (Osprey tends to have lots more and often smarter features, but check the details because in the travel pack above, I think Deuter did a better job)
• Harness (Deuter invented the trampoline mesh back, but Osprey have caught up – both have great harnesses now)
• Price – Osprey usually tends to be about 10% or more expensive than Deuter

There is no right or wrong answer on this one, but I found Deuter to be simpler and more robust looking (and cheaper) and Osprey is fancier more feature-rich packs.

Again! NJ Transit resumes service to NY Penn with heavy delays

NJ Transit and Amtrak riders found themselves stranded again Friday, with rail service suspended in and out of New York's Penn Station during the morning rush -- and another few hours after that.

Again, NJ Transit cited Amtrak overhead wire issues as the problem.

Amtrak attributed the mess to a disabled commuter train in Penn Station and said it didn't anticipate service being fully restored until noon Friday.

It comes less than a day after a power issue caused a lengthy disruption of both NJ Transit and Amtrak heading into the evening rush hour.

Amtrak had previously said that service suspension, which lasted hours Thursday afternoon, was caused by a "malfunctioning circuit breaker" that caused a loss of power on the tracks between Newark Penn Station and Newark Union Station. Amtrak and NJ Transit later said  a brush fire in Secaucus  had also caused issues for trains.

Earlier in the week,  Amtrak warned  the high temperatures the region is facing could require trains to operate at lower speeds and result in afternoon delays of up to 60 minutes.

Power Failure Brings Amtrak and N.J. Transit Trains to a Halt

New Jersey Transit Service into New York City was suspended Friday morning, and Amtrak service was severely delayed, after a power outage caused major disruptions Thursday night.

New Jersey Transit and Amtrak train service in and out of New York City was again disrupted Friday morning, just hours after a power failure shut down all lines for more than three hours on Thursday and caused significant holdups around the nation’s busiest transit hub.

Amtrak said that on Thursday, one of the hottest days of the year, the loss of electricity had forced it to suspend all service for several hours along a 150-mile stretch of the Northeast Corridor. By Friday morning, train service was again snarled around New York City, where a disabled train in Manhattan’s Penn Station halted New Jersey Transit service in and out of the city and led to major delays for Amtrak.

A little before 8:30 a.m., Amtrak said that service between Philadelphia and New York would resume at noon. Kyle Anderson, a spokesman for the rail service, said in a statement that it was working to remove the disabled train and repair damaged infrastructure. Mr. Anderson also said that Amtrak was working with New Jersey Transit to identify the cause of Friday’s disruption.

Thursday’s outage rippled along the Eastern Seaboard, causing trains to be halted and canceled as far away as Boston and Harrisburg, Pa.

Gery Williams, an executive vice president of Amtrak, said the problem had emanated from “a malfunctioning circuit-breaker” in New Jersey, just west of the rail tunnels under the Hudson River, which cut electricity to the overhead wires that power trains into and out of the tunnels. That segment of the corridor has just two tracks and is the primary bottleneck for train travel in the Northeast. Any disruptions to that narrow passage can mean headaches for thousands of travelers.

Mr. Williams said the electrical problem was not related to a brush fire in Secaucus, N.J., on Thursday afternoon that was burning near train tracks and the New Jersey Turnpike. That fire was extinguished by Thursday evening.

One of Amtrak’s Acela trains was already running more than an hour late when it got stuck just east of Newark with no air conditioning, Mr. Williams added. Those passengers were transferred to other trains, he said. Another Amtrak train was stranded in Queens, also without air conditioning. Amtrak sent a diesel engine to haul that train back to Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, he said.

Mr. Williams apologized to the customers of Amtrak and New Jersey Transit, whose trains share the portion of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor between New York City and Trenton, N.J.

He said that he met on Thursday with New Jersey Transit officials to work out plans for upgrading the rail infrastructure “so that our customers don’t have to put up with this awful experience” again. He said there had been “too many” significant disruptions recently.

New Jersey Transit diverted trains bound for Penn Station to Hoboken Terminal and accepted train tickets on its buses during the hours it was out of service. The PATH train between Manhattan and New Jersey also cross-honored rail tickets.

Jim Casey, 59, had been waiting in the station for nearly three hours on Thursday night. The delays, he said, had thrown a wrench into his evening plan to go to the beach.

“Right now there’s one tunnel in and one tunnel out,” said Mr. Casey, who commutes to Manhattan from Bucks County, Pa. “If something goes wrong in the tunnels we’re stuck.”

Asked if he thought the situation would improve in the future, Mr. Casey did not hesitate. He was not optimistic “this problem will ever go away,” he said.

He said he was late to work Tuesday because of delays and then waited two hours after work the same day to get home.

Across the river, at Newark Penn Station, Ilana Nathan was trying to travel from Long Island to her home in Cherry Hill, N.J. Her train at Penn Station in Manhattan was canceled, but then she was able to board its replacement. Then that too was canceled, but only after she’d sat on it for 90 minutes (with no air conditioning.)

A station official advised her to take a PATH train to Newark, she paid surge pricing for an Uber to the World Trade Center station. When she arrived in Newark she found all trains canceled. By then, she had been in transit for six hours.

“I’m hot, I’m exasperated,” said Ms. Nathan, 29. “I just want to go home.”

The disruption was at least the fourth in the last two months to cause long delays for commuters in the metropolitan area.

On Tuesday morning, New Jersey Transit service into and out of New York’s Penn Station was suspended for about an hour and all Amtrak trains passing through the station were delayed because of overhead wire issues and a disabled commuter train on the tracks, train officials said.

That disruption ruined the morning commute for thousands of New Jersey residents as the delays rippled out along the various rail lines in the state.

The problems on Tuesday came on the heels of major rush-hour delays at Penn Station earlier this month, caused by an inspection of tracks owned by Amtrak. Service was significantly delayed for more than an hour.

Service was also disrupted in May when an overhead wire used for traffic signals fell and struck a cable in Kearny, N.J., that provides electrical power to trains on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. Trains were halted on Amtrak and New Jersey Transit in both directions between Penn Station and Newark, and delays stretched to more than four hours.

NJ Transit, Amtrak service suspended again at Penn Station

Rail service was disrupted for a second day on Friday, with Amtrak trains into and out of New York City delayed or canceled and service on the commuter line NJ Transit suspended during the morning rush.

Several Amtrak trains scheduled to run between New York City and upstate New York were canceled,  the railroad said on X , and trains from Pennsylvania to New York were terminating in Philadelphia.

It comes after Amtrak delayed or canceled trains in and out of the city.

NJ Transit, meanwhile, appeared to blame Amtrak for the fact that its own service in and out of Penn Station was suspended during Friday's morning rush hour.

“Rail service is suspended into and out of Penn Station New York due to AMTRAK overhead wire issues in Penn Station New York,” the commuter line, which shares tracks with Amtrak, said on its website.

Service resumed around 11 a.m. with 45-minute delays, NJ Transit said.

Widespread train delays and sweltering heat made for a nightmarish commute Thursday evening.

"I'm disgusted because it's always something different,” said Denise Wooten, who commutes from Montclair, New Jersey, to Penn Station for work. “Delays. This has been going on for too long now. Every time you turn around. I just want to get home.”

NJ Transit and Amtrak users arrived at Penn Station Thursday only to learn that power outages were causing delays from New Haven all the way to Philadelphia.

An Amtrak spokesperson said two things were to blame for the service disruptions: brush fires in Secaucus, New Jersey and a malfunctioning circuit breaker which caused a loss in power on the tracks between New York, and Newark Penn stations.

"I take the train every day, but over the last couple of weeks, NJ Transit has really sucked. I mean we have had very poor services,” said Thurston Green, who takes Amtrak five days a week.

To make matters more unconformable, temperatures climbed well into the 90s Thursday, marking the hottest day of the year so far. And below ground, there wasn’t much relief.

"Look at me. I'm sweating, it's hot. It's too much,” said Wooten.

Amtrak warned commuters Thursday afternoon that high temperatures may require trains to operate at lower speeds, resulting in delays of up to 60 minutes between noon and 7:30 p.m. for the remainder of the week.

Power was restored at 5:30 p.m., but Amtrak warned riders to expect congestion along the rails.

Commuters said they’d like to see more accountability from transit leaders both in New York and New Jersey.

“They have to fix the trains. We keep spending all this money, $5 a fare. There are 365 days in a year, how much money are you spending here? Where's that money going to?” said Shawn Mendez, who was traveling to an event in Newark.

A heat advisory has been issued for the city beginning noon Friday with feels-like temperatures expected to reach 97 degrees.
