How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 14 and 13

If you have an iPhone or other iOS device with iOS 14 or 13, follow these steps to use Safari Find on Page:

Begin by opening Safari and browsing to a website.

Tap the action box at the bottom center of the screen (the box with the arrow coming out of it).

Swipe up on the pop-up sheet.

Tap Find on Page .

In the search bar, type the text you want to find.

If the text you entered is on the page, the first use of it is highlighted.
Use the arrow keys above the keyboard to move forward and backward through every instance of your search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to search for a new word or phrase.

Tap Done when you're finished.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 9 - iOS 12

For an iPhone or other iOS device running iOS 9 through iOS 12, follow these steps:

Open Safari and browse to a website.

Swipe through the second row of icons. Tap Find on Page .

Type the text you want to find in the search bar.

If the text you searched for is found, its first use is highlighted.

Use the arrow keys next to the search box to move through every use of the search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to enter a new word or phrase.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 7 and 8

The following steps work are the only way to use Safari's Find on Page feature on iOS 7 and 8 :

Begin by opening the Safari app and browsing to a website

Once the site is loaded in Safari, tap the address bar at the top of the Safari window.

In that address bar, type the text you want to search for on the page.

When you do that, a number of things happen:

In the address bar, URLs may be suggested based on your browsing history .
Beneath that, the Top Hits section offers additional suggestions.
The Suggested Website is delivered by Apple based on your Safari settings (you can tweak these in Settings > Safari > Search ).
After that are a set of suggested searches from Google (or your default search engine), followed by matching sites from your bookmarks and search history.

But where's Find on Page? In most cases, it's hidden off the bottom of the screen, either by the onscreen keyboard or by the list of suggested results and searches. Swipe all the way to the end of the screen and you'll see a section titled On This Page . The number next to the header indicates how many times the text you searched for appears on this page.

Tap Find to see all uses of your search word on the page.

The arrow keys move you through the uses of the word on the page. The X icon lets you clear the current search and perform a new one.

Tap Done when you're finished searching.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 4-6

In these earlier versions of the iOS, the process is a bit different:

Use Safari to browse to a website.

Tap the search bar in the top right-hand corner of the Safari window (if Google is your default search engine, the window will read Google until you tap it).

Type in the text you're trying to find on the page.

In the list of search results, you'll first see suggested search terms from Google. In a grouping below that, you'll see On This Page . Tap that to find the text you want on the page.

You'll see the text you searched for highlighted on the page. Move between instances of the text you searched for with the Previous and Next buttons.

When visiting a web page in the Safari app, select the Share button (it looks like a square with an upward-facing arrow in it). Scroll through the Share menu and select Find on Page, then type in the word or phrase you want to search for and select Search .

Navigate to the web page in the Chrome app and select More ... > Find in Page . Enter your search word or phrase in the text field in the top-left, and Chrome will highlight matching words or phrases in yellow on the web page.

On Macs, the correct keys are Command-F. What, are you on Windows or something?

Correct, Command+F is Find on Page on the Mac. This is aimed at people coming to iPhone or iPad from a Windows background and who are used to Control+F to search things on webpages.

On my iPhone, using Safari, I don’t have anything like what you’re showing. There are no windows in which to type

How to Find Text Within a Page in OS X

The Command+F keyboard shortcut for Find could be the biggest timesaving shortcut you'll ever learn. With it, you can jump to sections containing a certain word or phrase. It also works in most programs or apps, so you can use it not just for Safari, but with Word or Notes as well.

1. Press Command+F to bring up the in-page search box. Alternatively, you can go to the Edit menu > Find > Find… to bring up the search box.

2. Type in your search word or phrase and hit Enter. Safari will highlight all of the instances of the word on the page.

3. Click the left and right arrow buttons to scroll through the search results.

4. Important: If you want to broaden the search results, click the menu within the search box to switch between "Contains" and "Starts With."

So, for example, if your search string is "light", Safari by default will search for all words that begin with "light": lighthouse, lightbulb, and so on. Switch the option to "Contains" and Safari will also find words like spotlight and sunlight.

iOS 18 Beta: How to Search for a Word on a Webpage in Safari

You've been able to search webpages for words and phrases in Safari before, but the function has a new home in the beta.

Apple software beta tester, "Helps make our computers and phones work!" - Zach's grandparents

Apple released the fifth public beta for iOS 18 on Aug. 20, more than two months after the tech giant announced the software at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The update brings many new features to the iPhones of developers and beta testers, including RCS messaging and the ability to lock and hide certain apps . The update also places Safari's Find on Page search function in a new spot -- that way you won't accidentally send a web page to a friend or family member.

Before iOS 18, if you wanted to use Find on Page to search for a word in your iPhone's Safari app, you had to tap the Share button -- the box with the arrow coming out of it -- in the bottom menu of a web page, and then tap Find on Page. But you ran the risk of accidentally sending a web page to someone else, to another app or even posting it on social media. With iOS 18, Find on Page can be found in a new place far from the Share button, so you don't make that -- potentially embarrassing -- mistake.

However, iOS 18 is still in beta, and I recommend downloading a beta only on a device other than your primary iPhone. Because this isn't the final version of iOS 18, the update might be buggy and battery life may be short, so it's best to keep those troubles on a secondary device. For example, I download betas onto an old iPhone XR to keep any issues away from my iPhone 14 Pro.

Note that the beta is not the final version of iOS 18, so more features could hit your iPhone when iOS 18 is released. Apple said iOS 18 would be released to the public this fall, but there's no definitive date yet.

Where is Find on Page in Safari?

Find on Page can now be found in a new location in iOS 18.

1. Open Safari . 2. Go to a web page. 3. Tap the Reader icon -- it looks like a rectangle with two dashes under it, and it's on the left side of the address bar. 4. In the new menu, tap the icon that looks like a page and magnifying glass.

Find on Page works the same as it did in previous iOS versions: Start typing on the keyboard across the bottom of your screen, and Safari will highlight all instances of what you're searching for. To the right of your search bar -- just above your keyboard -- there are up and down arrows you can tap to go to the next instance of the word you're searching for.

You can also tap the magnifying glass to the left of the search bar to open a menu. This menu has two options: Whole Words and Match Case.

Enabling Whole Words won't include partial words in search results -- so searching for "sea" won't highlight "searching" as a result. Match Case can be used to find proper nouns. That way if you're searching for a particular sea, like the Black Sea, your search doesn't highlight any lowercase instances of sea. You can enable both Whole Words and Match Case at the same time, or you can use Find on Page without enabling either, but your results won't be as specific.

Once you're finished, you can tap Done next to the search bar to close the search bar and keyboard.

How to find text on a Safari webpage from your iPhone

The mobile web browsing experience has become the de facto standard for many smartphone-toting folks. According to Pew Research , one in 10 American adults is a smartphone-only internet user, without traditional broadband access.

With mobile browsing, the browser itself is often modified to make it more conducive to use on a smartphone. Unfortunately, this often makes it difficult to find certain features or tools that one may use when browsing on a desktop.

One such feature is the ability to find text on a webpage. On a standard keyboard, a user can simply type Control + F (Windows) or Command + F (Mac) to find what they’re looking for. On a smartphone, though, it’s not that simple.

Thankfully, the process for finding text on a Safari webpage on an iPhone isn’t terribly complicated. Here’s how to do it on iOS 10.3.2.

Start by opening the Safari application. Look for the icon with a blue compass and tap on it.

Once you have the application open, tap into the grey URL bar at the top of the screen and type in the URL of the website you want to visit. For this example, we’re going to use our favorite website, techrepublic.com. After you’ve entered the URL, tap on the blue Go button at the bottom right corner of the screen.

Once you’ve made it to the website, navigate to the webpage that you want to search. Once there, tap on the share button at the bottom of the screen that looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it. If the button isn’t there, it could be because you’ve scrolled down. Try scrolling back up to the top of the page, and it should show back up.

From here, you should see three rows of icons. On the bottom row of icons (the white and grey ones), swipe to the left until you see the Find on Page icon and tap it.

At this point a grey keyboard with a search bar built into it should appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap in the search bar and then type the word or phrase that you want to search. The tool should then highlight all the instances of it on the page in yellow.

To navigate among the highlighted instances on the page tap the up and down arrows immediately to the left of the search bar.

When you’re finished searching, simply tap the grey Done button to the right of the search bar and the Find on Page tool will disappear.

Q. On a desktop browser, you can press Control + F to get a search box so you can look for a specific word or phrases on a page, but how do you do that on a mobile browser where keyboard commands don’t really work?

When the screen of icons appears, swipe along the bottom row until you see the “Find on Page” icon with the magnifying glass icon.

Tap the icon and use the keyboard to enter your search terms. The iOS Safari browser automatically takes you to the first time the word appears on the page. Tap the down or up arrows next to the search bar to advance to the next occurrence of the word or to go back to the previous place it appeared.

If you are reading a long article on the web and want to find a specific word from it using the Safari web browser on the iPhone or iPad. Then, you’re in the right place. Here’s the step by step guide, by which you can find text on Webpage in Safari on iPhone or iPad (running on iOS 14).

Finding a specific word or phrase is pretty easy on the Mac or Windows , thanks to the Ctrl+F or Command+F command. But, things are not the same on the mobile platforms. At first, Open the Safari web browser on your iPhone or iPad.

Then, tap on the share icon (weird square box with an arrow pointing out) available at the bottom of the screen.
Pull up the share options page and tap on Find on Page option.
Now enter the word , you want to find on that particular page. In this case, I type the word “swivel” and then tap on the search button. It will automatically highlight the “swivel” word in yellow color, from the particular page. If the word is repeated in this article, you can click the up/down arrow button to dive into the next section.

Find on Page is one of the best and convenient ways to find text within a webpage on Safari. But, As I mentioned earlier, there’s another way, called Smart Search bar, by which you can do the same thing on your iPhone or iPad running on iOS 13 or iOS 14.

How to Search Text Within a Webpage on Safari using Smart Search Bar

Open the Safari Web browser on iPhone or iPad running on iOS 13 or iOS 14.
Then, tap on the address bar , enter the text that you want to find on that page. (Again, I type the word “swivel”.)
After typing the word, it will show the number of times the “swivel” word appears on the page.
Tap on Find “swivel” , from the address bar to get access to the complete search results.

The Safari will show you the first instance of “swivel” word results, but you can tap on the up/down arrow button to check the next instance or use the same particular word on the same page.

The afore-mentioned ways are one of the best ways to find a particular text on a Web Page. In case you’re using Chrome or Firefox, then you can tap on the three-dots menu icon and use the Find in Page option on your iPhone or iPad running on iOS 13 or iOS 14.

How To Search For and Copy Text in Safari on iOS 11 Devices

You may be familiar with searching for and copying text from web pages in the Safari web browser on your Mac. Did you know you can do the same thing on your iOS 11 device? Here’s how.

1.) While viewing the webpage in Safari, tap the URL bar at the top of the display window, and enter your search term using the virtual keyboard, but DON’T tap “Enter” when you’re finished.

But those do nothing for you when searching text in the real world. In order to install it, you'll need to be running iOS 11 or later. And the app works with and without any data connections since there's no interaction to and from any server.

How to Search Real-World Text for Words & Phrases Using Your iPhone

SearchCam's user interface isn't the prettiest since it's marred by an advertisement banner on the bottom and hasn't been updated to be optimized with newer screen ratios of the iPhone X and newer. But it's simple and intuitive for even the most novice smartphone users.

Step 2: Search Real-World Documents

Open the SearchCam app, grant it access to your camera, then type in the word or phrase you're looking for in the "Search" box. Next, all you have to do is point your iPhone's camera at the book, document, pamphlet, magazine, bill, or whatever else it is you want to scan for text.

Since the SearchCam app is basically a real-time OCR (optical character recognition) tool with an augmented reality inclination, where it's live-reading a moving image, it works right away.

Instantly, you'll notice a number of yellow boxes overlayed on the screen around the text you typed in, along with red indicator arrows underneath. These are your found items. If there are no matches to your query, nothing will appear on the screen.

Step 3: Improve the Search Results

The app has two buttons on the top right for a flash and image search. The flash (left screenshot below) uses the iPhone's rear True Tone flash to light up a document. This helps in dimly lit rooms, which is necessary because SearchCam requires sufficient light to commence its search.

With image search, you can go through any of the images in your Photos app that contain words, even PDFs (right screenshot below). So if you take a picture first using any camera app, you won't have to worry about the words moving around on the screen like in real-time scanning.

SearchCam works great with colored text, colored backgrounds, legible handwriting, and even tiny text, which I found to be the most useful. However, the text surface should be relatively flat in order for the tool to work at an optimal level.

One feature that's not mentioned on SearchCam's App Store page is that it works for other languages, including French, Spanish, and German (although I'm not quite sure how expansive it is). The app could use several more features to bolster its usability such as an export as PDF button, a searchable index of every word on the screen, and a built-in camera option for taking photos within the app.

Overall, students using books as references for essays and senior citizens or anybody unfortunate enough to have poor eyesight stand to benefit from SearchCam. Note that there used to be an Android app that performed a similar service, but it has since shut down for unknown reasons.

While some people might not ever have a need for this feature and will never ever use it, others are likely jumping for joy after figuring out this existed. Some people scour through page after page of content in hopes of finding a specific phrase or keyword, only to never find it or give up once they’ve spent too long. Well now, you can find it with ease thanks to the Find on Page feature included in the iPhone.

The feature has been around for quite a while, but for some reason, many people don’t know about it. As mentioned earlier, everyone knew about the command on desktop and laptop computers (ctrl+f), but very few knew about this one. But not only is it included in the iPhone, it is also incredibly easy to find and use.

The two most popular browsers that people use on the iPhone are without a doubt Safari and Chrome. Because of that, we will show you how to use this cool feature on both of the browsers so no matter which one you prefer to use, you can still search through the text.

Searching Text in Safari on the iPhone

Because Safari is the default browser on the iPhone, there is a good chance that well over half of all iPhone users use it, so we will begin with it. All you have to do is load up the web page or site that you want to search, then hit the button on the middle-bottom of the screen (the one that has an arrow coming out of a box). Once there, simply scroll through the various options until you get to Find on Page. Click on it, and it will let you enter any word or phrase and show you all the places it appears (by highlighting them).

Searching Text in Chrome on the iPhone

This is similar to searching on Safari, but just a little different. Once you load up the web page that you want to search, look up in the top right corner of the screen and hit the icon with the three vertically stacked buttons. Near the bottom of the drop-down menu is where you will see the Find in Page button. Once you click it, you will be able to search any word or term and Chrome will search the entire text of the page for that word or term.

So now you know something about the iPhone that not many people do, how to search text on the internet. It is incredibly easy to do (as you can see) and only takes you a few seconds, much better than scouring through each article word by word. Even if you don’t plan on using this feature, it is still something good to know.

iOS 7: How to Search for Text on a Page in Safari

The first place to look is Apple's own iPad User Guide for iOS 7 which explains the new search method, both for the Internet and on the page being viewed. Here's an excerpt from page 46.

What happens in iOS 7, when you tap the integrated URL/Search bar at the top, is that you're instantly taken to a Favorites page. That shift in context, away from the page you're viewing, is what may cause confusion. In this example, I am visiting www.macobserver.com, and after tapping the search field, Safari looks like this:

How is that Favorites page defined? Apple's User Guide explains: “Have your favorites top the list. Select them at Settings -> Safari -> Favorites.

It does not appear that there is any way to stay on the page being searched because, apparently, with an integrated URL/Search field, Apple has to assume that you're searching the Internet, not the page. In my case, here are my (only) options:

Just tap on the search field and start typing the search term. For example, even though it isn't being displayed, I'm searching the home page of The Mac Observer for the term “Gamet.” At the bottom of this list is a gray bar with the notation: “On this page.” If you tap the search term below, Safari will search for the first occurrence of that term on the page you were viewing.

In my example here, it found Jeff Gamet's name highlighted in yellow below. At last, Safari is back to the page you're searching.

Finally, at the bottom of the page being searched, there is a search bar that allows you to step through the next/previous occurrences or change the search term.

You can change the search term here.

Apple could have chosen to do this in several different ways, but taking the user away from the page being searched before the user expresses the search intention is what's apparently causing confusion. As with many new features in iOS 7, a little bit of practice and familiarity really helps.

You can only search through text messages saved within the Messages app, so deleted or cleared conversations won't be searchable.
In the Messages app, tap on the search bar to enter what you want to search for and view a list of top conversations that match your search.

Text messages serve as a handy historical record of conversations we have with others, including major events, links we share, or otherwise. Few realize that you can easily search through your entire text message history on the iPhone, which may help you in a pinch. Here's how.

Before you start your search, know that you can only search through text messages saved as conversations within the Messages app on your iPhone. This applies to both messages sent over SMS and iMessage. If you have deleted or cleared conversations within Messages in the past, they will not be searchable.

If you've synced your messages to an iPad using iCloud, you can even search your message history on and iPad.

But if you have ample history available — and many people have conversations stretching back years — then you'll have plenty to search through. There are two main ways to do it.

The best way to search through your text message history is using the Messages app. You'll be able to quickly see the most results and browse through them easily.

First, open the Messages app. If you are in a Conversation view, press the back arrow until you are on the main "Messages" screen. Note the search bar at the top.

Tap on the Search bar near the top of the screen, then type what you'd like to search for. The screen will change into a list of top Conversations that match your search.

If you'd like to see more results, tap "See All." Or if you'd like to see a result closely, tap on the conversation, and you will be taken to that position in your conversation history.

At any time you can tap on the back arrow and review the other search results, or you can clear the search bar and search for something else.

You can also search through your text message history using Spotlight Search . To open Spotlight, go to the Home screen and swipe downward from the middle of the screen with one finger.

In the search bar, type what you'd like to find in your text messages.

Search results from many different apps will appear on the screen (unless you've turned them off in Settings ). Scroll through them until you find the Messages section. Below that, you will see relevant search results from your text messages. In this case, we searched for "airspeed," and had to scroll all the way to the bottom to find our conversation result.

If you'd like, you can tap on the result to be taken to the conversation in the Messages app.

If Messages do not appear on your Spotlight search results, open Settings and navigate to "Siri & Search," then scroll down to the Messages app in the list and tap on it. In the section labeled "In Search," tap on the "Show In Search" option until the switch is turned on.

After that, your Messages results should show up in Spotlight Search again. Have fun combing through history!

iOS 15 Safari Guide: Tabs, Extensions, Search Bar, and Other Changes

Apple's Safari app has undergone a number of changes during the iOS 15 beta testing process. Apple started out with a radical new design that moved the address bar from the top of the app's interface and introduced a floating tab bar, but after a multitude of complaints, there were several redesigns that culminated in an option to undo the iOS 15 design entirely.

Design Changes

Safari started out with a new floating tab design that moved the address bar and tabs to the bottom of the iPhone interface, but now the design change is optional.

You can get to webpage settings by tapping on the Aa, or reload a page by tapping on the reload button. With this Tab Bar interface, when you scroll through a webpage, the entire Tab Bar collapses down so you can see more of the website. You can bring it back up with a tap.

If you choose "Single Tab" instead of "Tab Bar," the address bar and tabs will remain at the top of the Safari window, which is how iOS 14 works. The design of the Single Tab option is unchanged from iOS 14, with the same control bar available at the bottom of the interface. You can't swipe through tabs using the Single Tab interface and will instead need to use the Tab Switcher.

You can swap between the bottom Tab Bar and the Single Tab interface by tapping on the "Aa" button that's next to any URL.

How to Move iOS 15 Safari's Address Search Bar Back to Top

Website Tinting

Available in the Settings app, Allow Website Tinting matches the collapsed Safari address bar interface to the website's colors to make it blend in better with the background.

With the new Landscape Tab Bar setting, when you use your ‌iPhone‌ in landscape mode with Safari, you'll see a Mac-style tab bar that shows all of your open tabs, and you can swipe through them.

A downward swipe on any webpage in iOS 15 will refresh the page, and this is an alternative to having to tap on the reload icon.

Tabs in iOS 15 can be saved into Tab Groups, which offers a way to preserve a set of tabs you have open without having to have those tabs active.

To make a Tab Group, just open up all of the websites that you want to include, tap on the Tabs button with the down arrow, and then tap New Tab Group from [#] Tabs. You can also use this option to create a New Empty Tab Group that tabs can be added to later. Long press on any open tab (or the main address bar if you have the single tab view enabled) to add it to a Tab Group.

To load up a Tab Group, tap on the Tabs button and then tap on the name of the group in the list. All of your Tab Groups sync across your devices so you can access them on iPhones and iPads running iOS and iPadOS 15 as well as on Macs running macOS Monterey.

In iOS 14, all of your open tabs are displayed in a card-like interface that you can swipe through, but in iOS 15, open tabs are displayed in a grid view.

Customizable Start Page

Safari is more customizable in iOS 15, and you can edit what's available on your start page. This is a feature that has been available on macOS, but is now also available on iOS devices.

You can choose to have the start page show Favorites, Frequently Visited sites, Shared With You content, Privacy Report info, Siri Suggestions, Reading List, and iCloud Tabs.

There's an option to use the same Start Page appearance across all devices, and a toggle to upload the background image of your choice.

By having a two-step process that involves both an Apple server and a third-party server, ‌‌iCloud‌‌ Private Relay prevents anyone, including Apple, from determining a user's identity and linking it to the website the user is visiting.

With this system, Apple knows your IP address and the third-party partner knows the site you're visiting, and because the information is de-linked, neither Apple nor the partner company has a complete picture of the site you're visiting and your location, and neither does the website you're browsing. Normally websites have access to this data and combined with cookies, can use it to build a profile of your preferences.

Safari in iOS 15 supports web extensions, with web extensions able to be downloaded and installed through the App Store . Available extensions include content blockers, VPNs, and more.

What is RCS? iOS 18’s long-awaited fix for iPhone to Android messaging

iOS 18 will launch in the coming weeks with major improvements like Apple Intelligence , new customization tools , and more. But one of the biggest changes is coming with Messages: RCS support. RCS will make messaging between iPhones and Androids work better than ever. Here’s what that means for you.

RCS enables new features in iPhone-Android conversations

When considering text messaging, there are a few different texting methods to be aware of.

iMessage is Apple’s own, proprietary text messaging system. iPhones, Macs, iPads, and other Apple devices can communicate with each other over iMessage. That’s not changing in iOS 18. iMessage conversations use blue bubbles.
SMS/MMS make up the texting system that the iPhone’s Messages app defaults to when communicating with an Android user. SMS/MMS conversations use green bubbles.
RCS is like a newer, better version of SMS and MMS that will make messaging between iPhones and Android better than ever before.

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services , and it has been widely available on Android devices for a while. While SMS/MMS are technically more widespread, they are an older technology and come with more limitations.

For example, Androids supporting RCS can react to other messages using a heart, thumbs up, or other Tapback-like reactions. RCS also enables sending higher quality photos and videos, read receipts, typing indicators, and more.

RCS, importantly, is not end-to-end encrypted. While some RCS implementations on Android phones do use encryption, it’s not part of the standard itself. Though hopefully that will change in the future.

iOS 18 makes RCS the new fallback when you can’t iMessage

In iOS 17 and prior versions of the Messages app, messaging between an iPhone and Android device could be unreliable. This is because the iPhone relied on SMS/MMS in those situations, and those are older technologies that don’t seem to play as nice with iMessage.

After gaining RCS support in iOS 18, your conversations with Android users should be free from the headaches they’ve previously brought. RCS conversations will still use green bubbles rather than blue ones, but they should be much more reliable for everyday use. You won’t have to worry about media not going through because it’s too high-quality, or messages getting lost the way they sometimes do. And you’ll be able to use more of the iMessage features you know and love from your blue bubble threads.

Importantly, SMS and MMS aren’t going away, they’re just being relegated to third-string. RCS relies on mobile data to send messages, rather than a traditional texting plan, so in situations where you can’t use data but do have a basic cell connection, your iPhone will utilize SMS.

Available today in beta, later in September for all users

RCS is currently supported in the iOS 18 beta for select US carriers , so you can test it out if you’re running the beta and your carrier is on board. Expect to see a lot more carriers start supporting RCS before iOS 18’s public launch later this month .

Making apps just got easier

Sometimes an artificial intelligence tool comes out of nowhere and dominates the conversation on social media. This week that app is Cursor, an AI coding tool that uses models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4o to make it easier than ever to build your own apps.

Cursor is part development environment, part AI chatbot and unlike tools like GitHub Copilot it can more or less do all of the work for you, transforming a simple idea into functional code in minutes.

Built on the same system as the popular Microsoft Visual Studio Code, Cursor has already found a fanbase among novice coders and experienced engineers. People working for Perplexity, Midjourney and OpenAI are among the 30,000 customers paying to use the AI tool.

Cursor’s simplicity, working from a chat window, means even someone completely new to code could get a functional app running in minutes and keep building on it to add new features.

Cursor is an AI-first code editor. The startup has raised over $400 million since it was founded in 2022 and works with various models including those from Anthropic and OpenAI.

While on the surface a lot of the simple functionality, such as asking a chatbot to build an app, are things you can already do in Claude or ChatGPT . The power comes from its integration with the code editor and ability to quickly make changes or solve problems.

CEO Michael Truell describes it as "Google Docs for programmers", a simple code editor with AIO models built in that can write, predict and manipulate code using nothing but a text prompt.

Speaking to Forbes, Truell said the goal is to have Cursor automate 95% of an engineer's job so they can focus on the creative aspects of coding. This will allow individual engineers to "build systems that are much more complex than what powerful teams can build right now."

In my view, its true power is in the democratization of coding. It would also allow someone without much coding experience to build the tools they need by typing a few lines of text.

Putting Cursor to the test

I’ve used a few different AI coding tools including GitHub Copilot and an open-source version of Devin called Devinka. I’ve used Claude to build entire apps and I’ve been coding in Python and Apple’s Swift for years. I wanted to see how quickly I could build an app with Cursor.

As the chat is powered by Claude 3.5 Sonnet you can just have it explain in more detail any element of the code or any task required to make it run.

I’ve recently started going to the gym and so I decided to build a habit tracker app. I started with the simple prompt: “Build a habit tracker in Python with a GUI. Make it look good and add gamification elements to keep it fun. Modern, clean design.”

It generated the necessary code in the sidebar chat window and all I had to do was click Apply and then Accept . This added the code to a new Python file including all the necessary imports. It also gave me instructions on how to add modules to my machine to make the code work.

As the chat is powered by Claude 3.5 Sonnet, you can just have it explain in more detail any element of the code or any task required to make it run.

The first version was a very simple, bare-bones app that had a text box to enter a task, a complete task button, and a tracker showing your completion.

I started the process at about 10am, and by 10:35am I’d enhanced the app multiple times and added new styling and new functionality without writing a single line of code. By the end of my experiment, I had a functional, feature-rich habit tracker I actually plan to use every day. You can download the code from GitHub .

I did also try another project where I built the same app but in SwiftUI for iOS. This involved transferring code to Xcode and I found it hit and miss with more errors than in Python.

Final thoughts

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend Cursor to someone completely non-technical, but if you have even the slightest understanding of code, including writing a line of HTML to make a heading on your MySpace profile bold, then you’ll find Cursor a fun diversion.

Cursor allows you to create an app without writing code, but it does help to have a basic understanding of how code is structured. Even if you don’t, you can just send any error to the chat and Cursor will correct it — but sometimes things go wrong that aren’t well labeled.

Cursor has a free plan that comes with a two-week Pro trial and after that, just enough requests to the AI to get some basic code up and running. The pro plan is $20 per month; about the same as ChatGPT or Claude and includes unlimited requests.

junzhengca I'm a professional software engineer, and I must say, Cursor is absolutely fantastic. You still need to know programming and how things work. But overall, it is so accurate, I'm able to build a fully functional full stack application in around 4 hours, complete with CI/CD, full test coverage, and even some payment integration. That being said, my prompt are usually quite specific, like "generate a helper class that creates a hermetic in-memory MongoDB environment for testing, complete with both bootstrap and teardown methods". But still, it takes 10 seconds to write a prompt, then I can just say: "generate a test file for it", and it generates such an accurate test file that I'm not sure I'm able to cover all these cases if I was doing it myself. [Widgets Board] We are rolling out an update to the Widgets Board to improve security and the APIs for creating widgets and feeds for users in EEA regions. As part of this update, the Microsoft Start Experiences app will power the Microsoft Start widget and feed experiences. Also, as part of this update, some existing widgets will be removed and others will be modified, temporarily affecting their functionality. This update sets the foundation for new widgets and other features in development, set to roll out soon.

[Windows Share] New! You can now share content to your Android device from the Windows Share window. To do this, you must pair your Android device to your Windows PC. Use the Link to Windows app on your Android device and Phone Link on your PC.

When you press Windows logo key + E, a screen reader might say a pane has focus, or the focus might not be set at all.

When you press Ctrl + F, sometimes the search does not start.

[Battery life] Some GPUs cannot enter the low power state. This leads to high power usage that reduces battery life.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.

[FrameShutdownDelay] The browser ignores its value in the “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main” registry key.

[Domain Name System (DNS)] A deadlock occurs in the domain controller (DC) when it starts up in the DNS client.

[OpenSSH] This update adds a prompt that asks you to confirm when you turn on OpenSSH using the Server Manager UI.

[Unified Write Filter (UWF) and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)] An SCCM task to re-enable UWF fails because of a deadlock in UWF. This stops the device from restarting when you expect it.

[vmswitches] They fail to enumerate using Get-VMSwitch command.

If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages .

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer ( wusa.exe ) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Gmail users on Android can now chat with Gemini about their emails

Gmail users on Android devices can now chat directly with Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, about their emails in the Gmail app. Google rolled out the new feature, Gmail Q&A, on Thursday to users who pay for Gemini, according to a blog post , and announced the feature would be coming to iOS devices.

With Gmail Q&A, users can access Google Gemini in the Gmail app as a personal assistant that can read your entire email inbox. Google says you can ask Gemini to summarize emails by stating things like, “Catch me up on the emails about quarterly planning.” You can also use the feature to search for specific details, such as asking Gemini, “How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?”

Of course, you’ll have to bear with occasional hallucinations that plague even the best AI models when using this feature, so maybe don’t trust everything it tells you.

Traditionally, if you wanted to find information in your Gmail, you could use the search bar at the top of Google. That’s not going away, but the Gemini button will be added next to the search bar. This is all part of Google’s paradigm shift away from search and toward AI chat. Instead of locating the original email through search, Gmail is pushing users to have an AI chatbot summarize the info they’re looking for. However, it will still cite the source email in its answer.

Paying users can access the feature by clicking the black star logo, which has come to represent Gemini across Google’s product suite, in the top-right corner of the app. For now, the Gmail Q&A feature only has access to your emails, but in the future, Google says it will connect to files in your Drive account, as well.

In June, Gmail Q&A was rolled out to web users of Gmail who pay for Gemini or Google One AI Premium. These users pay roughly $20 a month for AI features like this, part of Google’s product and application layer around Gemini.

It’s unlikely that Gmail Q&A will come to free Gmail users anytime soon. Instead, Google is pushing features like Gmail Q&A to convince users that the expensive monthly subscription costs for Gemini are worth it. The company is also adding Gemini to all of its existing products, including Google Docs, Gmail, Google Calendar and more — but it all comes at a price. Thus far, these AI products are Google’s best shot at generating revenue off of Gemini.

Thank you, Vice President Kamala Harris, for putting your trust in me and for inviting me to be part of this incredible campaign. Thank you to President Joe Biden for four years of strong, historic leadership. And it is the honor of my life to accept your nomination for vice president of the United States.

We’re all here tonight for one beautiful, simple reason—we love this country! So thanks to all of you here in Chicago and watching at home tonight—for your passion, for your determination, for the joy that you’re bringing to this fight.

I grew up in the small town of Butte, Nebraska, population 400. I had 24 kids in my high school class and none of ’em went to Yale. Growing up in a small town like that, you learn to take care of each other. The family down the road—they may not think like you do, they may not pray like you do, they may not love like you do, but they’re your neighbors. And you look out for them, just like they do for you.

Everybody belongs, and everybody has a responsibility to contribute. For me, it was serving in the Army National Guard. I joined up two days after my 17th birthday and I proudly wore our country’s uniform for 24 years. My dad, a Korean War-era veteran, died of lung cancer a couple years later and left behind a mountain of medical debt. Thank God for Social Security survivor benefits. And thank God for the GI Bill that allowed both my dad and me to go to college—just like it has for millions of Americans.

Eventually, I fell in love with teaching, just like the rest of my family. Heck, three out of four of us even married teachers. I wound up teaching social studies and coaching football at Mankato West High School. Go Scarlets! We ran a 4-4 defense, played through the whistle every single down, and even won a state championship. Never close that yearbook, people.

It was my students who first inspired me to run for Congress. They saw in me what I hoped to instill in them—a commitment to the common good. An understanding that we’re all in this together. And a true belief that one person can make a real difference for their neighbors.

So there I was, a 40-something high school teacher with young kids, zero political experience, no money, and running in a deep-red district. But you know what? Never underestimate a public school teacher.

I represented my neighbors in Congress for 12 years and I learned an awful lot. I learned how to work across the aisle on issues like growing rural economies and taking care of our veterans. And I learned how to compromise without compromising my values.

Then I came back home to serve as governor and we got right to work making a difference in our neighbors’ lives. We cut taxes for middle-class families. We passed paid family and medical leave. We invested in fighting crime and affordable housing. We cut the cost of prescription drugs and helped people escape the kind of medical debt that nearly sank my family. And we made sure that every kid in our state got breakfast and lunch at school. So while other states were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours.

We also protected reproductive freedom because, in Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and the personal choices they make. And even if we wouldn’t make the same choices for ourselves, we’ve got a Golden Rule—mind your own damn business.

That includes IVF and fertility treatments. This is personal for Gwen and me. Let me just say this—even if you’ve never experienced the hell of infertility, I guarantee you know somebody who has. I remember praying each night for a call with good news, the pit in my stomach when the phone would ring, and the agony when we heard the treatments hadn’t worked. It took me and Gwen years. But we had access to fertility treatments and when our daughter was finally born, we named her Hope. Hope, Gus, Gwen—you are my whole world. I love you all so much.

I’m letting you in on how we started our family because that’s a big part of what this election is about—freedom. When Republicans use that word, they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office. Corporations free to pollute the air and water. Banks free to take advantage of customers. But when we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean your freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people you love. The freedom to make your own health care decisions. And, yeah, your kids’ freedom to go to school without worrying they’ll be shot dead in the halls.

Look, I know guns. I’m a veteran. I’m a hunter. I was a better shot than most Republicans in Congress and I have the trophies to prove it. But I’m also a dad. I believe in the Second Amendment. But I also believe that our first responsibility is to keep our kids safe. That’s what this is all about. The responsibility we have to our kids, to each other, and to the future we’re building together—a future in which everyone is free to build the kind of life they want.

But not everyone feels the same sense of responsibility. Some folks just don’t understand what it means to be a good neighbor. Take Donald Trump and JD Vance—their Project 2025 will make things much, much harder for people who are just trying to live their lives. They’ve spent a lot of time pretending they know nothing about it. But look, I coached high school football long enough, I promise you this—when somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they plan on using it.

We know what they’ll do if they get back in the White House. They’ll jack up costs on middle-class families. They’ll repeal the Affordable Care Act. They’ll gut Social Security and Medicare. They’ll ban abortion across America, with or without Congress.

It’s an agenda that nobody asked for. It’s an agenda that serves nobody but the richest people and the most extreme voices in our country. An agenda that does nothing for our neighbors in need. Is it weird? Absolutely. But it’s also wrong. And it’s dangerous. It’s not just me saying so. It’s Trump’s own people. They were with him for four years. And they’re warning us that the next four years would be much, much worse.

When I was teaching, we would always elect a student body president. And you know what? Those teenagers could teach Donald Trump a lesson about what it means to be a leader. Leaders don’t spend all day insulting people and blaming people. Leaders do the work. I don’t know about you all, but I’m ready to turn the page on these guys. So say it with me: “We’re not going back.”

We’ve got something better to offer the American people. It starts with our candidate, Kamala Harris. From her first day as a prosecutor, as a district attorney, as an attorney general, as a U.S. senator, and then, as our vice president, she’s fought on the side of the American people. She’s taken on predators and fraudsters. She’s taken down transnational gangs. She’s stood up to powerful corporate interests. She’s never hesitated to reach across the aisle if it meant improving lives. And she’s always done it with energy, passion, and joy.

Folks, we have a chance to make Kamala Harris the next president of the United States. But I think we owe it to the American people to tell them exactly what she’d do as president before we ask for their votes. So here’s the part you clip and save and send to that undecided relative.

If you’re a middle-class family or a family trying to get into the middle class, Kamala Harris is gonna cut your taxes. If you’re getting squeezed by the price of your prescription drugs, Kamala Harris is gonna take on Big Pharma. If you’re hoping to buy a home, Kamala Harris is gonna help make it more affordable. And no matter who you are, Kamala Harris is gonna stand up and fight for your freedom to live the life you want to lead. Because that’s what we want for ourselves. And that’s what we want for our neighbors.

You know, I haven’t given a lot of big speeches like this one in my life. But I’ve given a lot of pep talks. So let me finish with this, team. It’s the fourth quarter. We’re down a field goal. But we’re on offense. We’re driving down the field. And, boy, do we have the right team to win this. Kamala Harris is tough. She’s experienced. And she’s ready. Our job is to get in the trenches and do the blocking and tackling. One inch at a time, one yard at a time, one phone call at a time, one door knock at a time, one $5 donation at a time. We’ve only got 76 days to go. That’s nothing. We’ll sleep when we’re dead. And we’re gonna leave it all on the field.

That’s how we’ll keep moving forward. That’s how we’ll turn the page on Donald Trump. That’s how we’ll build a country where workers come first, health care and housing are human rights, and the government stays the hell out of our bedrooms. That’s how we make America a place where no child is left hungry. Where no community is left behind. Where nobody gets told they don’t belong.

That’s how we’re gonna fight. And as the next president of the United States says, “When we fight, we win!” When we fight, we win! When we fight, we win! Thank you, and God bless America!
