Around the World Tours & Travel

Around the World Attractions & Landmarks Guide

 • Winter vs Summer Weather: Since your tour around the world is likely to cross hemisphere lines more than once, you may experience warm highs and icy lows during your trip — bring clothing that can layer easily.
 • Shoes: Footwear can easily become a packing challenge since it can take up a lot of space in suitcases. Choose shoes according to the planned activities and terrains. Pack a versatile selection: a pair for relaxation, one for hiking, another for city strolls, and one for a more refined option.
 • Dress Like a Local: The beauty of a trip around the world is the opportunity to visit many far-flung places with diverse cultures and ways of life. You may encounter many different cultures, some with specific dress expectations. For example, in most Middle Eastern countries, expect to dress modestly—cover shoulders and legs and keep a scarf handy for covering your head. A similar dressing is also a good rule for touring many religious establishments.

The best virtual tours to explore the world from home

The Sistine Chapel is just one wonder offering a virtual museum tour ©Rajesh Gathwala/500px

We live in an age of unprecedented access to digital technology – and with it, brand new ways of exploring the world around us.

While it's not quite the same as seeing, say, the Mona Lisa or Christ the Redeemer in person, some of the world’s most popular and remote destinations have created libraries of online images and video, as well as 360 degree virtual tours that let you virtually explore museums, galleries, world wonders and even national parks.

Here a just a few of the best digital tours that let you wander the world from wherever you may be social distancing.

A woma nin a pink technical fabric top and matching pants and a black cap with a brim walks past the orange buildings and clay roofs of the Choijin Lama Museum in Ulan Bator with a green camera sphere from Google Street View strapped to her back

See the seven wonders of the world

If there’s anything capable of whetting your appetite for world travel, it is the new seven wonders of the world: the Great Wall of China , the ancient city of Petra , the Taj Mahal , the Colosseum , Machu Picchu , Christ the Redeemer , and Chichen Itza . Thankfully there are impressive virtual tours of each from The New York Times , AirPano , Google , and Panoramas .

With modern technology, you can even see the last standing wonder of the ancient world— The Pyramids of Giza . There are a few other wonders that might not make it into to the top seven but are still worth a digital peek, like the Alhambra , Seville's La Giralda , and even Easter Island.

The Egyptian Antiquities room in the Lovure Museum is empty except for several statues of various sizes from Tanis, Karnak, and Thebes

Best virtual museum tours

In recent years, Google has partnered with over 2,5000 art museums to upload high-resolution versions of millions of pieces of art. Highlights include New York’s MoMA , DC’s National Gallery of Art , Chicago’s Art Institute , the Casa Battl ó, and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum to name a few.

In addition, The Louvre offers a virtual tour , as do The Vatican Museums , many of the Smithsonian Museums , the Russian Museum , the top-rated British Museum , the Minneapolis Museum of Russian Art , and the Palace Museum in Beijing.

You may not be able to kiss the Blarney Stone right now, but you can tour the Blarney Castle from afar. You can also visit the Museum of Flight, the Museum of Science, the Museum of Natural History, the National Women's History Museum and Boston's History of Science Museum .

While museums are often an inherently visual experience, there's a lot to be learned from archives of past lectures and tours like the ones preserved online by Nashville's Frist Museum , the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Frick , and others.

Explore national parks

While travel to National Parks is best avoided for the time being, you don't need to miss out on the scenery. Virtual Yosemite is absolutely stunning and one of the best, replete with audio. Both Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore offer virtual tours as well.

Google has similar 360 degree audio-visual tours of five select national parks, including Kenai Fjords, Hawai'i Volcanos , Carlsbad Caverns, Bryce Canyon , and Dry Tortugas, as well as 31 more on Google Earth . You can also get an up-close look at almost 4,000 pieces of artwork, artifacts, and other treasures related to the history and culture of the national parks, and view online exhibits .

A penguin looks at the viewer through the glass walls of a habitat at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Digital safaris

Wildlife is a big draw for travelers, whether it's sighting some of the Big Five in Africa, glimpsing whales in North America, or introducing your children to new animals in person on a family safari . But if you're forays into the bush are grounded for now, many zoos and aquariums have created digital access to their habitats.

You can easily watch several live webcams of some of the nation’s greatest zoos and aquariums, including the San Diego Zoo , Houston Zoo , Zoo Atlanta , the Tennessee Aquarium , and the Georgia Aquarium . Additionally you can see Canadian farm animals doing their thing , or you could watch Stella the Dog jump endlessly into huge piles of Maine leaves.

Virtual hiking

Thanks to panoramic video, you can get a really good idea of what a hike looks like well before you arrive at the trailhead. For example, you can experience all of the following top-rated hikes right now from your computer or tablet: Bryce Canyon , Grand Canyon , GR20 , Inca Trail , and the death-defying Angel's Landing . For even more great hikes, simply YouTube one of Lonely Planet’s top 10 treks or any other hike that suits your fancy. Bonus points if you follow along during a workout to enhance the realism.

Famous landmarks

You can visit many wonders of nature, including the Amazon Rainforest , Iguazu Falls , the Komodo Islands , or Table Mountain , using virtual tours. Or you can explore the Statue of Liberty , the Sahara Desert , Niagara Falls , or even a guided tour of the Eiffel Tower . For even more virtual tours, search your bucket list of adventures with AirPano , Google Earth , or YouTube .

Astronatur Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. looks at the Lunar Module Pilot during the 1969 moon landing

Travel to outer space

The moon hasn't made it to Lonely Planet's Best In Travel list (yet!), and even without self-isolation and shelter-in-place measures for COVID-19, many of us may never travel to space. But thanks to technology, now is as good of a time as any to do so virtually. Before blasting off, considering touring some of NASA’s offices first. Then relive the last lunar missions and moon walks in stunning HD. Or take a virtual tour of Mars with the help of Google.

" London, Normandy, Paris was a fabulous trip, especially the year of the 75th anniversary of D-Day! That was our 7th trip with Holiday Vacations. Loved every one of them. The national parks are well worth seeing, as were Hawaii and Cuba. "

McMansion Ghost Town, Missouri, USA

What was meant to be a lavish, multibillion-dollar development soon turned into a nightmare for the people who chose to buy homes at the proposed Indian Ridge Resort Community, now known as the McMansion Ghost Town.

Plans for the ultra-exclusive community in Branson West, Missouri were announced in 2006 and the project was set to cost $1.6 billion to complete. Keen investors were promised that the state-of-the-art Ozarks compound would come equipped with everything a millionaire could need, from a shopping mall to a luxury hotel, as well as dozens of contemporary, castle-like houses.

Missouri news station KY3 offered a glimpse of the incomplete interior of one of the homes. A half-fitted kitchen stood void of appliances, an empty shell once intended for family living.

Shrouded in controversy, the abandoned estate was at the centre of one of the largest real estate fraud investigations in American history back in 2017. At least three of the community's developers were reportedly imprisoned for bank fraud and money laundering. Those found guilty were also forced to pay back $14 million that they borrowed under false pretences.

Despite being funded by ill-gotten gains, there were glimmers of hope for this abandoned town. Despite being funded by ill-gotten gains, there appeared to be glimmers of hope for this abandoned town. Property developers Brookwood Group purchased the expansive estate and in 2018 they unveiled their plans. The company's proposed community was to be called The Ridge at Table Rock Lake, offering luxury homes as well as a hotel, hospitality, entertainment and healthcare facilities, right on the doorstep of the Ozarks. However, the plans never came to fruition.

In October 2022, theme park Silver Dollar City confirmed that they had purchased the site and that the townhouses would be torn down to make way for a new development. The abandoned settlement was demolished less than a month after the sale went through, closing the chapter on this half-built ghost town.

Skrunda-1 made headlines in February 2024 after a group of British Royal Marines who took part in a training programme at the abandoned outpost began legal proceedings against the UK Ministry of Defence. The group alleges that they were exposed to asbestos after sleeping in one of the buildings, which later tested positive for the carcinogen.

However, change may be on the horizon. In February 2022, it was reported that business partners Gabi Tuschak and Lance Olinger had bought up Glenrio with the hopes of turning the faded outpost into a nostalgic tourist destination. Their plans include transforming the old café into a welcome centre and gift shop, as well as renovating the motel so it can welcome visitors once more.

Sadly, Ciudad Jardín Soto Real is just one of many similar development projects across Spain that have been left to decay. By capturing the estate in its current state, Redondo hopes to encourage the Spanish government to put the properties to good use. The majority of its citizens were employed at the nearby Kaiser Steel mine, but during the 1970s, the town began to decline in the wake of substantial staffing cuts at the mine, followed by its ultimate closure in 1983.

Love the sesh? This Wetherspoons-inspired holiday might be for you

If there’s one thing Brits love, it’s a visit to Spoons . Cheap food and even cheaper pints , what’s not to like?

And a visit is made all the better if your local happens to be one of the Wetherspoons pubs located in a cool venue — like the Opera House in Tunbridge Wells, or The Counting House in Glasgow which still has an old bank vault inside.

Many fans of the chain like to visit different ones around the UK, and if you’ve ever been tempted to see some of the best pubs Wetherspoons has to offer, then now’s your chance.

Travel company, MyUKTour, is launching the UK’s first ever Wetherspoons holiday.

The ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ trip would give fans a chance to tour some of the weird and wonderful locations, while also getting to see more of the UK and several historical sites.

There will be two different tours available, one southern (seven days, six nights) and one for northern parts of Britain (six days, five nights), but neither will come cheap, with trips starting from £1,800 per person.

A Wetherspoons pub breakfast

But there’s a catch, this cost only includes one night of accommodation at a Wetherspoons Hotel. The other nights are paid for separately, and can be arranged by the travel company on your behalf, or you can sort it out yourself.

Highlights of the seven day tour will include The Winter Gardens in Harrogate, which is said to be one of the country’s most beautiful Spoons’ venues, as well as The Sir William de Wessyngton in Sunderland, (the cheapest Spoons’ in the north), and The Rochester Castle in Hackney, the oldest surviving Spoons’ venue.

If that weren’t enough, you’ll also get to visit Wetherspoons founder, Tim Martin’s, favourite Spoons pub along the way, experience Curry Club, as well as a Spoons breakfast, and play the iconic Wetherspoons game, where people buy food and drink for strangers.

The tours are customisable so you could add more locations, or include both northern and southern locations on your holiday.

Wetherspoons tour locations:

South Tour Visits: London, Cambridge, Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells, Exeter, Penzance.

It includes seeing eight iconic Wetherspoons venues plus The Tower of London, Kings College Chapel, Abbey of St Edmund, Canterbury Cathedral, Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery and Pendennis Castle.

North Tour visits : Keswick, Blackpool, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Harrogate, Newcastle.

It also includes seeing six iconic Wetherspoons venues, the Wordsworth House and Garden, Blackpool promenade, Albert Dock, The Cavern Club, Manchester museums, Royal Armouries Museum, Nidderdale National Landscape.

A spokesperson from MyUkTour said ‘All of us at MyUKTour are so excited to start offering this bespoke trip to one of Britain’s best known, and arguably finest, cultural institutions.

‘Combining hearty pub grub and craft ales with historical monuments and stunning landscapes, this tour is sure to showcase the very best that Britain has to offer.’

While we haven't been able to bring you our regular live coverage, we have been keeping an eye on today's latest developments.

Here are the key updates:

 • The Ukrainian military issued a rare statement confirming it had struck four oil refineries in Russia during an early morning drone attack;
 • South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador over the country's new defence pact with North Korea;
 • A Russian guided bomb killed two people and wounded three others in the eastern Ukrainian town of Selydove, according to regional prosecutors;
 • European Union countries have formally approved the launch of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova next week;
 • Vladimir Putin said Russia would keep developing its arsenal of nuclear weapons to preserve the "balance of power in the world".

Here's a look at the latest situation on the ground:

That's all of our live coverage on the conflict for now.

We'll bring you any major developments overnight, and we'll be back with our regular updates in the morning.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is "deeply grateful" for Joe Biden's decision to prioritise air defence deliveries for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said his country was in critical need of the capabilities to protect its cities and civilians from Russian attacks.

"The partnership between Ukraine and the United States is strong and unwavering. Together, we are protecting life against terror and aggression," he added.

It comes after the US said a recent defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea was a "cause for concern".

The recently signed defence pact between Russia and North Korea is a cause of concern but is no surprise, the White House has said.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokesman John Kirby said the agreement between the two countries was a sign of Russia's desperation for foreign assistance in the Ukraine war.

The deal has seen both countries vow to help each other if they faced armed aggression, and replaces previous treaties between the countries.

Russia said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

Mr Kirby also said the US would reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military equipment to go to Ukraine, which is in "desperate need" of more air defence capabilities.

Vladimir Putin has warned that South Korea would be making a "big mistake" if it decides to supply weapons to Ukraine.

The Russian president's comments come after South Korea said a new defence agreement between North Korea and Moscow was "absurd" and it would reconsider sending arms to Kyiv as a result.

Mr Putin said Seoul had nothing to worry about when it came to the mutual defence pact.

Russian state media quoted him as saying that Moscow expected its cooperation with North Korea to serve as a deterrent to the West.

He also refused to rule out supplying high-precision weapons to the country.

Russia is considering making changes to its nuclear weapons doctrine, Vladimir Putin has said.

The Russian president made the comments while speaking to reporters at the end of his Vietnam trip.

The existing doctrine states that Russia may use such weapons in response to a nuclear strike or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to the country.

Ukrainian troops have been launching mid-range reconnaissance drones in Kharkiv.

Russian forces crossed into parts of the northeastern region last month, and officials claim they have seized at least a dozen villages.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv's forces are gradually pushing Russian troops out of the contested area.

A police search is under way for a woman who allegedly desecrated the graves of Ukrainian soldiers.

Kyiv city's prosecutor's office said the unknown woman vandalised the graves this morning.

Commemorative plaques and lamps were torn off and broken, it said.

The Ukrainian flag was also "mutilated", it added.

"Operational investigations and searches are being carried out to establish the woman's identity," the office said in post on Telegram.

If caught and found guilty, the woman could face up to five years in prison.

We have been reporting today on Vladimir Putin's visit to Vietnam.

Here is a recap of what the Russian president has been up to:

 • Mr Putin signed a series of deals with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam during his state visit;
 • The two leaders signed agreements to further co-operation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health;
 • They also agreed to work on a road map for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam;
 • Following the talks, Mr Putin said that the two countries share an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs";
 • The Russian leader also met Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and is scheduled to meet Communist Party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - Vietnam's most powerful politician;
 • The trip has resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US embassy in the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Romania's decision to provide his country with two Patriot air defence systems will strengthen security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

"This crucial contribution will bolster our air shield and help us better protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian air terror," the Ukrainian president said on X.

The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a surface-to-air missile defence system.

For months now, Ukraine has been calling for countries to provide more air defence systems to help protect it from Russian attacks.
