Miami travel agency owner arrested amid claims of stealing thousands from vacationers

M iami Oklahoma Police said there have been hundreds of reports that Wiford Tour and Travel allegedly took thousands of dollars from vacationers, causing some to miss out on trips they had been planning for months. 

Diahann Wiford was taken into custody at the Ottawa County Jail and faces a charge for passing bad checks. 

However, police said she is also being investigated for allegedly stealing money through the travel agency Wiford Tour and Travel, a company that police believe she co-owns. 

“We started taking reports Friday and we put a thing on Facebook that says hey if you’ve been a victim, please contact us and currently we’re a little over 500 nearing up to 600 people that have reported being victims of this alleged scam," said Thomas Anderson, Chief of the Miami Police Department.

Customers reported they purchased vacations through the agency but never received their tickets. 

Earlier this month, Discover Branson posted about the closing of the Wiford Tour and Travel agency, listing other names they were believed to be operating under. 

In the post, they said, "We have not collected any money from their clients and have not been paid for many tickets purchased this week. The only company that has collected consumer money is Wiford Travel."

“I know there’s hundreds of thousands of dollars and there’s victims all over the region. We’ve been in touch with the Attorney General’s office, I believe they’re going to assume this investigation just because of the magnitude and it’s more in their wheelhouse for that," Anderson said. 

Miami police ask that anyone with allegations regarding Wiford Tour and Travel fill out an online complaint form through the Attorney General Office's Consumer Protection Unit. 

NewsChannel 8 spoke with Jarrett Hardwick, a Travel Advisor with Royal Treatment Travel, who shared tips for vacationers seeking a trusted travel agent or agency. 

“People just need to be careful and be mindful of who they’re talking with. I highly advise if you know someone who’s in a travel agency, talk with them, and if you know them personally book with them and you can alleviate some of that concern. But again, just do your research before you book with anyone especially before you give out sensitive information," said Hardwick. 

The investigation is still ongoing, and no charges have been pressed.

FBI agents raided a Minneapolis travel agency earlier this week in support of a broader investigation into the disappearances of about 20 Somali-American men.

Amana Travel is the same company that said it refused to book flights for two teen-agers who wanted to travel to Somalia early last year. An employee told MPR News she helped alert the parents of the two boys about their plans. But the young men somehow made it to Somalia months later.

The FBI is investigating how roughly 20 young men from Minnesota traveled to their native Somalia since late 2007, possibly to fight in that country's civil war.

The men are believed to be fighting with al-Shabaab, an extremist group that is trying to violently oust Somalia's weak government. The U.S. considers al-Shabaab a terrorist group.

Last month, in connection with the massive counterterrorism investigation, agents raided the apartments of two Rochester women who regularly send money and secondhand clothing to displaced people in Somalia. The search warrants for the Rochester raids and the Minneapolis travel agency are under seal in federal court.

An FBI spokesman confirmed that the Amana Travel raid is separate from a Minneapolis police investigation that resulted in the arrest of the travel agency's owner, Ali Mohamed Mohamud, on Thursday. Local authorities accuse Mohamud of scamming customers out of more than $33,000 in airline tickets that he allegedly never arranged for them.

Some customers reported that they didn't realize Amana had canceled their trips, or that the tickets were bogus, until they arrived at the airport ready to board their flights.

Mohamud, 35, has been charged with six counts of theft by swindle.

He has not been charged in any federal crimes stemming from the raid of his business.

Police Raid Travel Agency After Man Accuses it of Scamming Him

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers raided a travel agency’s offices on Wednesday in Nairobi after a video of a man crying while alleging to have been scammed by the organisation went viral.

According to reports, the travel agency has been allegedly scamming unsuspecting Kenyans and hoodwinking them about facilitating their relocation to foreign countries.

In the video, the man lamented having lost Ksh60,000 which he alleged was transferred to the agency as a fee to arrange relocation to Canada.

The officers were said to have raided the offices and made several arrests and confiscated computers before carting away a tonne of documents.

However, the law enforcement officers did not speak on the matter and did not disclose their reason for the raid.

Reports further indicate that the raid caused traffic disruption outside the organisation's offices as members of the public gathered outside to witness the incident.

In the viral video which is said to have prompted the raid, the man camped outside the agency’s offices while crying stating that he would not leave until he was refunded his money.

The man who hails from Kiambu stated that the Ksh60,000 was a loan he had taken out from a lender to facilitate his search for greener pastures.

He added that the company had promised him a job sponsored by a Canadian company.

His claims have also been backed up by several Kenyans online who alleged that the company in question is notorious for scamming unsuspecting  Kenyans. However, investigations into the matter are yet to be completed.

The case comes against the backdrop of many similar incidents where Kenyans have lamented being conned by travel agencies.

In June 2023, a woman in Mombasa was arrested for fraudulently obtaining Ksh3.9 million whom she promised a lucrative job in foreign shores.

Another similar incident occurred in September 2023, when Eldoret residents decried being defrauded funds meant to secure scholarships in Finland.

The mastermind behind an armed robbery on a travel agency nearly 20 years ago, in which a PC was shot dead, has been jailed for at least 40 years. Last month, Piran Ditta Khan, 75, was found guilty of murdering West Yorkshire Police Officer Sharon Beshenivsky, who was fatally shot at point-blank range at Universal Express travel agency in Morley Street, Bradford in 2005. Although he wasn’t one of the men who carried out the raid – he had stayed in a car outside the agency – he had played a ‘pivotal’ role and was guilty ‘as surely as if he had pulled the trigger on that pistol himself’, prosecutors said. PC Beshenivksy and a colleague, PC Teresa Milburn, were both unarmed when they responded to an alarm call on 18 November 2005. Both were shot in the chest. PC Milburn survived. Khan fled to Pakistan after the shooting but was detained, then extradited to the UK last year. At the trial, Khan said he was owed £12,000 by the Bradford travel agency owner. Probe Agency Seizes Over Rs 3.50 Crore During Raid On Tour Firms In Delhi

The central probe agency raided eight locations in Delhi and Ghaziabad.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized Rs 3.57-crore cash after raiding tours and travel firms and their CAs in Delhi-NCR to probe alleged irregularities in processing of e-visa applications for foreigners wishing to travel to India.

The central probe agency said today that it raided eight locations in Delhi and Ghaziabad on July 9 under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

The raids were carried out at the residences and offices of directors of several tour and travel companies and their chartered accountants and Rs 3.57-crore cash along with incriminating documents and digital records were seized, the agency said in a statement.

The ED had received "specific inputs" that these entities were involved in unauthorised receipt of foreign remittance through payment gateways in the name of providing e-visa services to foreigners, it said.

The agency said the preliminary probe found "two such entities received foreign remittance of more than Rs 200 crore for processing Indian e-visa applications of foreigners without any authorisation from the government."

"These entities were also involved in high value suspicious transactions," it said.

It was also found that "certain chartered accountants played a key role in managing the affairs of these entities and were behind the suspicious transactions carried out by them."

"The seizure of unaccounted cash during the raids has raised further suspicion about the operations of such entities and blatant violation of statutory requirements," the ED said.

A probe is underway and the directors and executives of these firms will be questioned, a senior agency official said.

Models Bella and Gigi Hadid are collectively donating one million dollars (£785,000) to support relief efforts, according to their agent. 

The money will go to Heal Palestine, Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), World Central Kitchen (WCK), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

The sisters have frequently been vocal in their support for Gaza, and their father Mohamed Anwar Hadid is himself Palestinian. 

After Hamas's 7 October attack on Israel, Gigi, 29, offered her condolences to those affected.

"My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict - too many of which are children," she wrote on Instagram.

"I have deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it's a responsibility I hold daily."

She added: "While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person."

Bella, 27, said in May that she was "devastated at the loss of the Palestinian people and the lack of empathy coming from the government systems worldwide".

The United Nations food agency has said it is unable to feed most civilians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. 

Only 27,000 people in Rafah are currently being reached by the World Food Programme (WFP), according to its local director Matthew Hollingworth. 

Roughly one million Palestinians are living in the area, many of them displaced from other parts of Gaza. 

"The sounds, the smells, the everyday life are horrific and apocalyptic," Mr Hollingworth told journalists. 

"People sleep to the sounds of bombing, they sleep to the sounds of drones, they sleep to the sounds of war, as now tanks roll into parts of central Rafah, which is only kilometers away. And they wake to the same sounds." 

A ceasefire proposal consisting of three phases has been outlined by Joe Biden.

The French president has backed the ceasefire proposal set out by Joe Biden last night. 

Emmanuel Macron said he supported the proposal for "a durable peace" and that the war "must end". 

France is also working with partners in the region on "peace and security for all", he said. 

A high-level official has said Egypt is undertaking "intensive efforts" to "resume negotiations" for a ceasefire and hostage deal, according to a report. 

The official, quoted by Al-Qahera TV, said this was "in light of the recent American proposition". 

Last night, Joe Biden detailed a ceasefire and hostage deal proposal that he said Israel had put to Hamas. 

However, Israeli officials have told our correspondents they were "blindsided" by the announcement. 

If it works, then this will be a smart and cunning diplomatic move.

If it doesn't then President Joe Biden will look foolish.

He knows the huge risk of once again being taken for a ride by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Few knew that he was due to make this announcement.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has said 33 of its employees have been killed in Gaza since the war began. 

Of those, it said 19 were killed "while performing their humanitarian duties". 

The organisation today buried Mohammed Jihad Abed, an employee in the disaster risk management department. 

He was killed in an Israeli attack on his home in Rafah last night. 

American, Egyptian and Israeli officials will be meeting tomorrow in Cairo to discuss the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing, according to a report. 

Egypt is insisting that Israel withdraw its forces from the crossing, a high-level source told Egypt's state-linked Al Qahera TV. 

Israel seized the Gaza side of the crossing last month during its offensive in the city of Rafah. 

Earlier this week, a member of Egypt's security forces was killed in a shooting incident near the Rafah crossing.

An Egyptian soldier stationed on a watchtower had reacted to seeing an armoured vehicle carrying Israeli troops cross a boundary line near the border while the soldiers pursued and killed several Palestinians, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters news agency. 

The soldier opened fire and Israeli forces fired back, killing him, the sources said, sparking an exchange of gunfire between the two sides. 

The British prime minister has praised the proposed ceasefire deal set out by Joe Biden, saying it is "welcome news". 

Rishi Sunak said he hopes Hamas "takes this opportunity to take this deal that is on the table, [and] that would ensure hostages can be released and be back with their families". 

He also expressed hopes to "flood Gaza with far more aid than has been getting in" and to "use that pause in the fighting to build a sustainable and lasting peace". 

Mr Sunak joins a growing group of world leaders expressing support for the deal, which will only put more pressure on Israel and Hamas.

“Boku Bay, Kotor”

Next stop is  Kotor, Montenegro  located on the Adriatic Sea and famous for its towering limestone cliffs, elegant beach resorts, fabulous mountains, glacial lakes, and is listed as one of the most  beautiful countries in the world ! The town itself is characterized by narrow winding streets and squares, lined with ancient stone houses, old palaces, and churches dating from the 12th century. A great and unique fun way to see Kotor is from the seat of a tuk tuk! Try it, you’ll like it! MUST SEES are the “Blue Cave,” Kotor Cathedral and Zanjic Beach. Rather its a narrated scenic drive of Kotor or a 4-wheel drive adventure, Montenegro will, for sure, capture your heart.

Next port, Dubrovnik , in the stunning country of Croatia . Located on the Adriatic Sea, the city is known for its distinctive “Old Town,” which is encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 13th century.
