Before I knew what being a fisherman meant I was busy becoming one. Growing up in Michigan on the Great Lakes where my father was building P.T. boats for the Navy I had the opportunity to learn to operate boats by the age of twelve.

My passion for fishing was growing as there were so many walleye and muskies to catch right in front of our family home on Lake St Claire. That chapter in boating and fishing abruptly stopped by the age of 17 when the war started and there was the military calling my name.

Morning Bottom Fishing Tour

Head out into the early morning calm aboard the 36′ Marjorie Ann. This charter departs from Maʻalaea Harbor at 7:30 am and sets off for Maui’s best fishing grounds. The knowledgeable crew on board is familiar with the most reliable spots for reeling in the tasty ones.

This charter takes a maximum of only eight people. The small group size allows for a more personalized experience and top-notch service. Beginners are more than welcome, and with fewer people on board, the crew can devote plenty of time to instruction.

Equipped with a comfortable cabin, a large bay deck, plenty of shade, and an onboard head, the Marjorie Ann ensures a comfortable and spacious ride. After a few hours on the ocean, you’ll be back with your feet on land by 11:30, just in time to grill up the fish you caught for lunch.

Know Before You Go:

● Even fishermen need days off. Tours are offered Monday – Friday. ● Marjorie Ann can accommodate up to 8 passengers. The small group size means attentive service, and beginners will appreciate the detailed instruction! ● See you bright and early; check in at 7:00 am, tour departs at 7:30 am.

West Maui Sport Fishing Shared Charter

Embark on a shared charter expedition aboard the state-of-the-art Cooper V equipped with top-notch fishing gear and guided by seasoned professionals who navigate the Pacific’s bountiful waters. Whether you’re a novice angler or a seasoned fisherman, this experience offers the chance to reel in prized catches while relishing in the stunning backdrop of Maui’s picturesque coastline. With this shared sport fishing charter, every moment is an opportunity to create lasting memories and immerse yourself in the exhilarating world of sport fishing.

Everything necessary for a day spent reeling in tasty fish is provided for you, from the detail-oriented crew to fishing equipment. Departing Mala Wharf in Lahaina, you’ll waste no time getting to the best fishing zone for the day. In seas abundant with snappers, trevally, and mahi-mahi, you’ll be able to keep and take home whatever you reel in. Say you catch the big one: this charter can point you in the right direction to a taxidermist or fish printer, so you will never forget your trophy day in Maui’s waters.

Maui Inshore Fishing Charter

This shared inshore fishing charter offers one of the most economical ways to try your hand at fishing in Maui’s waters. This charter utilizes a fleet of fast vessels that can top 30+ knots, and in turn, can cover more fishing ground than other tours. As a result, the chances of bringing home a fish for dinner are significantly increased.

Departing out of Mala Ramp, guests can choose between four, five, or six-hour tours off of Maui’s West Side. Group size varies by vessel but can typically accommodate 6-8 guests with 4-5 anglers. Observers are welcome too.

Whether you want to spend a morning bottom fishing, bait fishing, or deep water jigging, the crew is happy to show you to the best spots and even offer pointers along the way. The captain can also clean and fillet your catch, ready to eat as soon as you get to the grill.

● Fish bite on any day of the week. This tour runs every day, seven days a week. ● 12 years of age and up welcome. ● Not as much of a morning person? Afternoon trips are also available.

Private West Maui Fishing Charter

The shallow waters around West Maui are teeming with fish like mahi-mahi, ono, and smaller but equally tasty jacks and snappers. With a fleet of speedy vessels and a knowledgeable crew, you’ll peruse West Maui waters in search of a delicious catch.

This charter departs from Mala Ramp and offers four, five, and six-hour private tours. All levels of anglers are welcome, as this charter offers a variety of different fishing techniques. Bottom fishing nearshore waters is fun and easy for kids and families, while more experienced anglers might enjoy deeper water jigging or trolling with bait. Capacity varies from vessel to vessel but typically ranges from 6-12 guests, with 4-5 anglers.

● This tour is offered seven days a week. ● Ages 3 and up are welcome aboard, accompanied by an adult. ● Morning and afternoon trips are available.

Hawaii Bottom Fishing Tour

Operating on Maui for over 28 years, the crew aboard the 40′ Hokua is known for being the most professional, knowledgeable, and friendly around. Offering two three-hour bottom fishing tours daily, the Hokua can accommodate up to 14 anglers of all experience levels.

This charter departs Maʻalaea Harbor at 7 am and again at 1 pm. Your captain will assess conditions and head to what he’s determined to be the most prime fishing ground for the day. As you cruise around Hawaiian waters, you’ll troll for pelagics such as Ono and Mahi. Once you reach your desired location, you’ll send the lines down and bottom fish for snappers, trevally, amberjack, and more. The captain can clean your catch for no additional cost.

● You just might make some new friends on this tour, and we’re not talking about the fish you catch. Hokua’s capacity allows for up to 14 anglers. ● Hokua is an eco-friendly jet drive boat. ● Start ’em young; kids four and up are welcome aboard.

Start Me Up Sportfishing

Reserve now and you can fish with the best! Start Me Up operates a fleet of tournament-equipped 37 foot Bertrams. START ME UP SPORTFISHING boasts Penn International rods and reels in 50# through 130# class. She has a fishfinder, GPS, auto pilot, twin control stations, an air conditioned cabin, refrigerators, and 2 color TVs/VCRs.

No fishing license is required. START ME UP provides all tackle, as well as ice and a cooler. All you need is to bring your own food and beverages for the day. Departure is from Lahaina Harbor.

Their rates are no more expensive than other fishing charters on Maui, but they are very popular and advanced reservations before arriving on Maui are a must! We recommend that you book at least three weeks in advance. Start Me Up has a great success rate, and part of this is because they leave Lahaina Harbor very early. This enables them to get to the productive fishing buoys ahead of many other boats, which increases productivity. Check-in is typically at 5:15am and they depart at 5:30am!

Private charters are limited to 6 passengers per boat ... since they have more than one boat they can handle larger parties of 12 or 18 but only if their schedule for the day is completely open. Private charters have a stricter cancellation policy than shared charters ... a minimum of 14 days notices is required for cancellation or changes.

Fishing charters in Hawaii traditionally keep the fish that are caught as a part of the crew compensation, but Start Me Up allows guests to keep as much fish as they would like ... with the promise that you will put the fish to good use and not waste it. You may keep the whole fish. They charge a nominal cleaning fee if you'd like them to fillet the fish for you.

NOTE: Start Me Up charges for your reservation at the time your space is confirmed.

Start Me Up supplies all the fishing gear, bait, and expertise that you need. No fishing license is required. Bring you own beverages and snacks (no glass containers and no bananas). They provide a cooler and ice.

Start me Up often operates afternoon charters on dates when the morning schedule is full. While fishing is usually more productive on early morning trips, some people prefer the convenience of afternoon charters. The reservation form has a field to indicate your time preference.

Makai Adventures Bottom Fishing

$289.56 per Adult, $245.00 per Child (4-12), $111.35 per Ride Along (Hawaii sales tax included)

Makai Adventures Bottom Fishing is the perfect adventure for the experienced fisherman or for anyone looking to land their first fish. Lahaina has the calmest waters in Maui, which makes it a great place to catch Hawaii's most delicious fish. There will be plenty of action in the crystal clear waters with depth of 75-200 feet. With Makai Adventures, you will fish with locals! Captain Keao was born and raised on the islands and fishing these waters his whole life. The types of fish you may catch are grey snapper (Uku) 1-30 Lbs, giant trevally (Papio) 1-100+ Lbs, peacock razor fish (Nabeta) 1-4 Lbs, grouper 1-100+ Lbs, barracuda 3-40 Lbs, and goat fish (Moano/Kumu) 2-8 Lbs. Although some pelagic fish are seasonal, bottom fish are in Hawaiian waters year around. Their fishing boat, Kainalu, has a complete walk around deck, a bathroom and freshwater shower on board. Small groups will give you a very personalized experience as well as the best chance of catching fish. Makai Adventures will clean your catch and let you take it home. These tours are fun for the whole family!

This fishing tour operates from April through November on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 7am or 12pm, and the duration is 4 hours. Check in is at Lahaina Harbor Slip #16. Soft drinks and water are included in the tour. They will provide all fishing gear (Penn reels) and instruction. The group size is 8 anglers max, and ride alongs are welcome! Don't foregt to bring towels, sunscreen (no spray-on sunscreen as it gets slippery on boat), and light jacket. The minimum age is 4.

ACTIVITY TIPS

There are two kinds of clients who go fishing. The first kind of client is after the thrill of landing the big one ... the fish of a lifetime ... the kind of people who spend thousands of dollars to have the fish stuffed and mounted above their fireplace. For this sort of client the best choice on Maui is to go with Start Me Up. Their boats are well maintained and equipped with state of the art fishing gear. Some days are productive, catching a number of mahi mahi in the 20-30 pound range. Other days the action is slow, but they'll land a big 100 pound ahi tuna or even a world-class marlin. Occassionally they get skunked. This type of charter is for the high roller who wants a shot at the big one, and if they don't get that big fish they swear they'll be back another day to get even.

The second kind of client who goes fishing is looking to have a great time and their ultimate goal is to catch something they can take back to the condo, and brag to the other tourists using the BBQ grill "Hey, I caught that fish this morning!" This type of client would rather be hands-on and reeling in tasty fish sized just right for tonight's dinner than troll for hours and hours looking for that elusive big one. For this type of client Makai Adventures Bottom Fishing is the way to go. Bottom fishing is often extremely productive, and it is much MUCH less common for the charter to get completely "skunked". It is an especially good choice for parties that include kids who might get bored on a fishing charter that is going to spend the whole time trolling.

The most common question we are asked is "What type of fish are in season during the week I'm in Hawaii?"  Most of Hawaii's game fish are here all year. It is very common to catch Ono, Mahi Mahi, Ahi, and Marlin all year round. Bottom fishing yields even more diversity; several types of trevally, a variety of snapper, grouper, baraccuda, and more.

Please be aware that bananas are strictly forbidden on fishing boats. Everything about a banana is slippery ... everybody's heard the expression "One foot over the edge and the other on a banana peel." In time bananas became known as a symbol of bad luck that would even affect your ability to catch fish.

The other thing you shouldn't bring on board ... glass bottles. All beverages should be in cans for safety of everyone on board.

Occasionally we have clients ask "What are the chances that I will catch fish?"  Of course that's impossible to answer with a certain percentage. For sportfishing charters, many factors come into play that make some days excellent and other days average  ... surface conditions, tides, schooling patterns. There's also the human element. How lucky are you??? How's your karma??? Have you been nice to people lately? It's rare, but occasionally a boat gets skunked ... there are no guarantees. Just remember ... the sport is called "fishing" and not "catching." But the crew of your boat will try their very hardest ... they are professionals who know what they are doing. When you go to a restaurant in Hawaii and see a wide variety of fresh fish on the menu, just remember that SOMEONE caught those fish ... might as well get out there and let it be YOU!

We had an amazing time with our crew who took my husband, myself, and two boys (8 & 10) on a 3-hour fishing trip in Lahaina. We were looking for a fishing trip where our boys could feel successful catching a few fish and our wish came true as both boys caught fish almost immediately after casting their lines!

At the end of the trip we hooked a large Ono (35 lbs!) and thanks to the crew's precision expertise, we were able to reel it in! An incredible experience! Needless to say, we all had fish for dinner (for many nights). This was a great trip; the boat was clean, the crew was professional and fun, and the memory will last a lifetime.

I can't say enough good things about the trip. Very well organized and they kept in touch. Jimmy wasn't afraid to pull up and hunt down a better place to have a chance to catch a fish. We both had great results Wyatt caught a nice tuna and I caught a 16 lb red snapper! Awsome day thank you so much, we'll be back!

My husband and I set out on this fishing trip hoping to catch a decent size fish. You get to choose in advance how long your trip will last, and you can head out in the early morning or in the afternoon. Fully insured and with safety our first priority; we fish anywhere from a beautiful sand beach to a secluded rocky shoreline.

Four Hour Shore Fishing Tour: $550 for up to 2 anglers plus $75 each additional angler

Book Now In our four hour shore fishing tour we will find the best location taking into consideration the current weather and the bite.   We will spend all of our time at one location trying different techniques for different fish.

Five Hour Shore Fishing Excursion: $650 for up to 2 anglers plus $75 each additional angler

With a little more time to spend with line in the water, our five hour shore fishing excursion gives us that much more opportunity to find more or different kinds of fish.

Six Hour Shore Fishing Adventure: $800 for up to 2 anglers  plus $75 each additional angler

Our six hour shore fishing adventure is the ultimate!   We can access up to two different locations experiencing different parts of the island.   More time with a line in the water gives us more opportunity to catch fish.  

All trips include round trip transport from your hotel or condo, all bait, tackle and gear, cold bottled water and juice.

We love kids! We can tailor a great fishing trip for parent and child age 9 and above.

We can accommodate up to 4 people total.  And depending on our location we may need to have 2 – 3 anglers switching off.   We charge $75 per person over and above the first two active anglers. However, we would not charge for anyone wishing to accompany you that will not be fishing.

Q: What is the difference between the private charter and a share boat bottom fishing? A:  The boat can take up to eight passengers so for the private charter you get all 8 seats. Same price if you come by yourself or bring 7 buddies. Share boat means in addition to the seats you reserve, you may be bottom fishing alongside a few other passengers. On a private charter you may also choose to extend the trip for an hour or two.

4 Hr. Morning Bottom Fishing Tour

Maui Fishing Charters Departing at 7:30 AM (check in at 7:00 AM) from Ma‘alaea Harbor Maui Slip #97, we take you straight to the Maui Fishing grounds for a chance to hook the big ones, and of course the tasty ones if you would like to keep your catch for dinner. Bait, tackle, and the personal attention of the experienced crew are all provided.

We take only small groups for a more personalized trip and plenty of coaching for beginners. The small group size on our Maui Fishing Charters create the opportunity to try a greater variety of Maui fishing styles including the use of live baits when available. Trips return to Ma‘alaea by 11:30 AM.
