Disney Cruise Line’s leadership team in The Bahamas on growth, building careers, and making magic

When guests arrive at Disney Castaway Cay, our island destination in The Bahamas, they enjoy sun, sand and magical moments that only Disney can provide. But none of that would be possible without the amazing leadership team that guides and supports the island crew, from the maintenance bays where everything on the island is kept in tip-top shape to the sandy shores watched over by safety-conscious lifeguards.

Three Disney Castaway Cay leaders stand with their backs to the camera looking at a Disney Cruise Line ship as it comes into port.

Our current leadership team is a strong group of experienced managers, and the good news is that we’re looking for more to join them! We’re currently seeking Bahamians to lead our island crews now at Disney Castaway Cay and soon to come at our new island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, in Eleuthera, opening summer 2024.

We spoke with several of our current leaders to ask them about why they chose to work with us, how they grew in their career with Disney, and why others should join them in creating magic in The Bahamas!

Earle, Island Operations Director

For Earle, island operations director, it’s all about the details. “My role is to ensure that the island operations function on all cylinders. I’m responsible for the day-to-day operation at Castaway Cay and bringing the team together to get ready for our guests on a daily basis – and that is a lot of detail work that goes into making sure we put on a good show! My role is to make sure that every guest that leaves the island is happy, and that they enjoyed their stay, and Disney lived up to what it promised.”

And that good show is what drew Earle to Disney in the first place. “I chose to work with Disney Cruise Line because of the experiences I had in the past with Disney at the theme parks in Orlando. And I know that Disney has very high expectations, and I want to meet those when I serve the guests, and also make sure that the crew who work with me are also able to meet those expectations.”

Earle is excited to see Disney expand their island destinations in The Bahamas and hopes others will be too. “You’ve got new opportunities there, and you’ll be able to learn more about the Disney operation and organization. And in Eleuthera, you’ll find that it’s on a larger island, so you are able to go and venture about and learn about one of the family islands within The Bahamas at the same time.”

Jermaine, Island Recreation Manager

While we look to our future, Jermaine, island recreation manager, remains inspired by our past. “I’ve learned about the history of Disney and how they have always been family-oriented. They always put the crew first, and they believe in you and empower those who work for them. You learn about the history of how it all started, and that the person who started the dream hasn’t been around for decades, but his legacy still lives on because he invested in his people.”

After two years with the company, Jermaine said he doesn’t see himself taking his career anywhere else. “I will work for them as long as I can! I’ve met amazing people. I have a support system. I can pick up the phone and call any one of my bosses, and I am always just one phone call away to help or consult.”

“Disney is a household name,” he said. “Disney is a worldwide name. But they still take the time to invest in their employees and give them the best tools necessary to help them succeed. Or if they want to advance their career further, Disney has opportunities and helps them to develop to get where they need to be to become a better human being.”

Kendall, Senior Island Maintenance Manager

Home is where the heart is, so Kendall, senior island maintenance manager, is glad to be able to work in The Bahamas for a name as big as Disney’s.

“For me, it gave me an opportunity to stay in The Bahamas and work for one of the big companies. I mean, I love it here. I’m currently from the island of Grand Bahama, so moving to another island and being able to work while still being in The Bahamas – I love it.”

While being close to home is nice, he also loves that his department is diverse and thinks his team greatly benefits from learning from each other. “We take all of the backgrounds, all of the skills and culture, and we blend it into one, and we make it work. We have local Bahamians, but even they come from a number of different departments and bring their uniqueness to the team. And then we have those who are international, and they come with so much culture, so much background, so much experience, and we just blend it. We listen to each other, and everybody has a voice at the table.”

And what would Kendall say to someone hoping to join the Disney Cruise Line crew in The Bahamas? “Just apply – there isn’t any better place to be! This is the right place to be and the right time to be here.”

disney cruise jobs bahamas

NASSAU, The Bahamas (Aug. 4, 2022) – Disney Cruise Line has hired Leslie Lopez as Manager, Human Resources to support its recruitment and employment efforts in The Bahamas. In this newly created role based in The Bahamas, Lopez will build relationships with key business partners while recruiting Bahamians into various jobs with Disney Cruise Line – both onboard its ships and at its premier destinations in The Bahamas.

“Disney Cruise Line is committed to employing a majority Bahamian workforce at Castaway Cay in Abaco and our forthcoming experience at Lighthouse Point in Eleuthera. Leslie’s global HR experience and his deep understanding of Bahamian culture will be instrumental in achieving our goal,” said Michael Almeida, Director, Human Resources, Disney Cruise Line. “With his ability to build positive workplace cultures and implement employee engagement initiatives, Leslie will play an active role in Disney Cruise Line’s contributions to the Bahamian economy and workforce.”

Prior to his current role as human resources manager with AML Foods Limited, Lopez held several Bahamas-based human resources and hospitality positions for global companies and resorts. He earned his master’s degree in human resource development from Barry University and his bachelor’s degree in hospitality management from Florida International University. Lopez is a certified Professional in Human Resources-International and holds a teaching certificate from Harvard University.

Through his professional and academic experiences, Lopez developed a passion for connecting Bahamian workers with quality jobs that serve as foundations for lifelong success.

“I am most excited to showcase the diverse talents and abilities of the Bahamian people and introduce them to a variety of quality jobs with Disney Cruise Line,” Lopez said. “I am confident that Disney’s commitment to building and supporting career paths for people throughout the Bahamas – including but not limited to Abaco and Eleuthera – will have a positive long-term effect throughout the islands.”

Disney Cruise Line has long been committed to The Bahamas. Since its maiden voyage in 1998, Disney has introduced countless families to the beauty and spirit of The Bahamas and has provided significant economic impact while demonstrating a strong commitment to the environment and the community. Approximately 75 percent of the cruises offered by Disney have at least one stop in The Bahamas, all four of its ships are registered in The Bahamas and it is estimated that Disney Cruise Line operations currently contribute more than $70 million toward the Bahamas gross domestic product annually.

Disney Cruise Line has committed to filling all positions on Castaway Cay with Bahamians across a range of disciplines with opportunities for training and advancement. Disney has received all the necessary approvals from the Government of the Bahamas and has begun work at Lighthouse Point, which is expected to create more than 300 construction-related roles – more than doubling the number of jobs Disney Cruise Line committed to in its Heads of Agreement.

Disney Cruise Line to go well beyond 150 jobs pledge at Lighthouse Point destination, set to open with all-Bahamian leadership team

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Disney Cruise Line is set to exceed its initial commitment of 150 permanent jobs at its Lighthouse Point, Eleuthera destination, scheduled to open in June with an all-Bahamian leadership team.

Joey Gaskins, Regional Director of Public Affairs for the Bahamas and the Caribbean, addressing the Eleuthera Business Outlook, highlighted that Disney Cruise Line has confirmed substantial progress, with the development nearing completion and set to open Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on June 7th.

He disclosed that Disney Cruise Line acquired 900 acres of private property for its second island destination in the country, with a significant portion- 25 percent- earmarked for donation back to the government, while 59 percent of the acreage will remain undeveloped. The overall development stands at less than 16 percent, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Access to beaches will remain for citizens and residents.

Gaskins emphasized that the Heads of Agreement signed with the government stipulated a minimum of 120 Bahamians directly employed during construction and a commitment to 150 permanent jobs. “We promised 120 construction jobs. We’ve exceeded that,” Gaskins stated. “Currently, we have 600 Bahamians working on site to finalize the project. We’ve invested over 5,800 hours in training for these workers.”

He further noted that Leslie Lopez, Disney’s Bahamian recruitment manager, has spearheaded recruitment efforts, with senior staff undergoing onboarding since January. Gaskins confirmed that Disney will surpass the 150-job pledge outlined in the HOA.

“We are proud to announce that we will be opening with an all-Bahamian leadership team. From island directors to every on-site manager, all will be Bahamian,” Gaskins said. Disney recently conducted a job fair on Eleuthera, and Gaskins highlighted the need for additional lifeguards.

Its location on Eleuthera  — a long, thin island in the Bahamas east of Nassau — provided an obvious start, and Disney leaned into the theme with the resort’s architecture, art, music, food, conservation efforts, cultural touchstones and entertainment options — including a raucous, cowbell-heavy celebration on the beach.

“We’re not putting you into a fictitious place. We’re not setting you into a different time. It’s here and now,” said Kevin Thomas, Walt Disney Imagineering creative director on the project.

Lookout Cay opened this month and is being visited primarily by DCL ships sailing out of Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale and Galveston, Texas.

“We thought about how many people are going to be experiencing the Bahamas for the first time, coming from around the world, the journey here and what can they take back,” Thomas said. “Not only that group but also those that have experienced the Bahamas and other destinations prior to this visit … We wanted to give a very unique experience to that.”

Central to the planning was a junkanoo — a year-end Bahamian celebration with music, dancing and bright, hand-crafted costumes. The Disney version includes Mickey Mouse and friends in new island wear created by Bahamian designer Theo Elyett.

Performers for “Rush! A Junkanoo Celebration” parade to a beat from near the resort entrance, through the mini marketplace and to the beach-facing Goombay Cultural Center for a bouncy performance before reversing their course.

The space is also a spot where kids can create junkanoo headpieces.

“We had an entire team dedicated to understanding what is junkanoo? What does it mean to the locals? What does it mean to the Bahamian culture?” said Rachel Quinn, vice president entertainment operations.

“The word authenticity is used a lot, but this was our north star,” she said.

“Junkanoo is a celebration of our tradition,” said Warren Andrew Pinder of the National Junkanoo Committee. “Our culture is colorful, is expressed through music, dance, a vibrancy led by the beat — that beat that we really cherish.”

The junkanoo show’s sounds waft across the pinkish sands and piercing blue waters of the beach. The site also includes an adults-only section, water-play areas, a nature trail and clusters of private cabanas.

There are multiple bars and a trio of restaurants with menus that include grilled spiced mahi-mahi with mango and pan-served Bahamian pigeon peas and rice.

An entertainment option on the southern end of the beach is the Fun in the Sun Beach Bash, a character-driven family games session accompanied by Disney music with Caribbean remixes. Music producer Victor Johnson fashioned these renditions.

“I actually watched a lot of the cartoons and put kind of my own Caribbean beat to it just watching cartoons on mute,” he said. “I kind of came up with a few genres, like subgenres, because our original genre of the Bahamas is goombay, and that includes junkanoo, rake and scrape and calypso and stuff like that. I came up with a rake and scrape arrangement for the Chip ‘n’ Dale song as well as a little Soka goombay arrangement.”

The task was daunting at first, because the original versions were classics, Johnson said.

“When I got the project, I was very intimidated because these are amazing songs already. But I went to sleep dreaming ‘Ch-Ch-Ch-Chip and Dale,’” he said.

An original song for the experience — “Everything Cool” — was written and performed by Bahamian musicians and recorded on Eleuthera.

The beach elements of Lookout Cay are connected by a curvy, elevated boardwalk.

“We wanted to minimize our impact on the natural environment and also make it accessible to all of our guests,” Thomas said. They also play off the multilevel terrain of the area, a contrast to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island that has been in use by the cruise line since 1998.

“Unlike Castaway, which is pretty flat terrain … this offered a little bit of a variety to that,” Thomas said.

Structures along this stretch have a high, curved roofline and provide shade, particularly in dining areas.

“The architecture is not traditional, but it has been inspired by the organic nature of what we can find here. With rooftops, the upper portions of all of these are inspired by shell patterns, shells that are bound along the Bahamian shores. … Once you get underneath that you really start to experience man’s touch on this,” Thomas said.

“I think Disney, in particular, gets more cruisers that aren’t necessarily from Florida than maybe some other cruise lines do and therefore if you’ve never been to the Bahamas, it’s a great introduction,” said Matt Roseboom, editor and publisher of Orlando-based Attractions Magazine. “Most people probably don’t know what junkanoo is.”

Roseboom previewed the destination last week.

“I think Castaway Cay is all about story and you might not know you’re in the Bahamas necessarily or on Disney’s stranded island,” he said.

“With this new island, it’s a little bit different, and they’re going all in on the Bahamas theme. … There’s really no Disney story to it, just the fact that you were in the Bahamas and here’s some information about Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, where you are.” he said.

Another obvious difference between Lookout Cay and Castaway Cay, which is about 130 miles to the northeast, is seen from the beginning of the visit. As ships approach the new destination, they dock at the end of a long, curved pier.

Passengers leave the ship, then travel the length of that connection — it’s a 10-15 minute walk — to catch a tram that connects to the bulk of Disney’s beach offerings after about 10 more minutes. But Castaway visitors are on that island right off the ship.

“We chose a pier because it had the least impact on the marine habitats in that area between the shore and where the ship had access,” said Bradley Watson, conservation program manager.

“The ship can only dock in a certain depth of water and, alternatively, some people might have dredged and made that so that the ship can come directly into shore. … Logistically, that would have been easier in the long run. But we chose the hard road,” he said.

The pier has an open-trestle design to minimize the effect on sea life, Disney officials said.

“Beyond just building the pier to go over that area, we relocated over 800 coral from that path to another spot on our site to ensure that they would continue to thrive as we put in that pier,” Watson said. “I think that it’s kind of a marvelous way that we put together infrastructure and nature.”

But for human visitors, the bridge to Lookout is “unusually long,” Roseboom said. “It needs shade; it needs seating. Hopefully, those will be added at some point. … They’re going to have issues with thunderstorms and trying to get back to the ship.”

The new destination includes a nature trail that showcases native species and leads to the namesake lighthouse.

“One of the best things we did is everything we didn’t do. We’re at less than 16% [development] of the site. It’s perfect, in my opinion,” Watson said.

“I’m really excited that Lookout Cay is now a gateway for so many other people to understand what it’s like to be a Bahamian,” he said.

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point bursting with Bahamian beauty Back to video

And although it seems too good to be real, no magic was conjured to create this stunning natural oasis at the southernmost tip of the island of Eleuthera, although it was Magic that brought us here – the Disney Magic cruise ship, that is.

This slice of paradise is Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, the first new Disney Cruise Line (DCL) island in nearly 25 years and a destination that DCL hopes will share the culture of the Bahamian people with its guests, as well as complement its private island, Disney Castaway Cay.

“Castaway Cay is an imaginary place that our guests get to wash up on, it’s in the Bahamas but it’s very Disney,” says Joseph Gaskins, DCL regional director of public affairs for Bahamas and the Caribbean.

“What this place allows us to do is have a destination that is inspired by the rich culture, history and heritage of the Bahamas and its natural environment, while still providing our guests with those signature experiences, food and amenities they have come to love about a Disney Cruise Line experience.”

To bring Lookout Cay (pronounced “key”) to life and make the Bahamian aspects genuine, Disney collaborated with the community, hiring nearly 200 locals and having an all-Bahamian leadership team on site.

“Whether it’s in Imagineering, costuming or entertainment, there’s been a real thoughtful approach to including Bahamians and making this experience something that our guests can leave feeling like they’ve had an engagement with Bahamian culture,” says Gaskins, who is Bahamian.

Among the entertainment for DCL guests is RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration that includes the opportunity for guests to learn about the history and craftsmanship of the colourful and upbeat festival from local artisans at the Goombay Cultural Center.

Andrew Pinder, chairman of the National Junkanoo Committee, says Disney “got it right” in the sharing of the “celebration of our tradition and culture expressed through music and dance, a vibrancy led by a beat that we cherish.”

Other activities for cruise line guests include a beach bash with family games, snorkelling, a gaming pavilion, bike rentals, nature trail, a Junkanoo-inspired water play area, an adults-only stretch of the beach with bars and BBQ, and cabana rentals for both adults and families. Plus, there are port adventures such as tours and catamarans, and shops providing Disney and beach items as well as handmade merchandise by local artisans.

In addition to Disney signature food (burgers, hot dogs), there’s also local-inspired lunch offerings such as Bahamian pigeon peas and rice with marinated chicken, plant-based island curry, and lime-marinated snapper. Coffee locally roasted in Eleuthera is served and a specially made craft beer – Long John Pineapple Pilsner from Pirate Republic Brewing Co. – pays tribute to pineapples, for which Eleuthera is famous.

Situated between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the archipelago of the Bahamas to west, the property is 900 acres but Disney committed early on to developing only a fraction of it, Gaskins says, and are at less than 16% as they try to minimize impact on the environment.

The first evidence of that goal is the trestle pier, the only one in the Bahamas, he notes. By building out into open water (about a 15-minute walk from ship to shore, followed by a seven–minute tram ride to the beach), no dredging of sensitive coral areas was needed for the ships to come in and the marine life and tides can continue their natural flow.

The site is also 90% solar powered, so there’s little to no effect on the local power grid or water infrastructure.

“We are very self-reliant on this property and focused on renewable energy,” Gaskins says.

The walkways don’t impact the ground environment so guests can move around without rustling the brushes. The pathways also go over the natural dunes that protect against storm surges and hurricanes and are home to plants and animals.

Nature was the inspiration for the shapes of the buildings and the colour schemes, with the patterns on the tops of buildings resembling seashells found along the Bahamian seashore. The paintings underneath were done by Bahamian artists, and the music was created locally as well, with some originals and Disney classics given a Bahamian flair.

Kevin Thomas, senior creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering, says the goal of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point “is for people to walk away with a thirst perhaps to come back or to expand upon what they learned about Bahamians.”

We can confirm we are already dreaming of cruising back to have another Junkanoo dance with Mickey and Minnie and swim again at that beautiful beach.
