Gir national park safari – a detailed guide.

Gir Jungle Safari

Above 400 royal Asiatic lions. 300+ Leopards. 200+ bird varieties. 100+ mammals and reptiles. And much much more! Gir National park is a Jungle book story coming to life in an even more exciting way.

The 1412 square kilometres large park is exemplary in protecting what was gifted to us in au naturale. Conserving a great range of native species that would’ve otherwise fallen under the endangered list of animals.

What makes this park a must-visit is the presence of the wild Asiatic lion. Declared as a national park in 1975, this beautiful biodiversity hotspot is the ONLY PLACE in the entire world where these majestic beasts can be found wandering.

Spotting the fauna amidst the exotic floral blanket and deciduous forests is an exhilarating experience. Be it a safari or a short stroll around these regions, the arid ecoregion is going to leave you awestruck, and that’s guaranteed.

Table of Contents

Follow the compass to the southwest part of Gujarat towards the Sasan Gir village and you’ll be led to the Gir National Park. Located inland from the beaches of Diu, the park has a trail which has all the directions leading to the reception and orientation centre.

It’s easily accessible and at a considerable distance from many major cities in and around Gujarat,

Distance from Veraval – 69 km

Distance from Junagadh – 76 km

Distance from Porbandar – 179 km

Distance from Bhavnagar – 200 km

Distance from Ahmedabad – 325 km

Distance from Vadodara – 378 km

How to get here

There are several airports in and around, that connect Gir to the major cities. The closest one is Keshod airport and Rajkot airport. Which lie around 80 and 170 km from the park respectively. Both airports also have well-connected flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad.

Yet another convenient route remains the flight to Diu airport that is a 2-hour drive from the sanctuary. As your preference, you can choose a cab or bus service to facilitate your journey.

The nearest railway station is Junagadh, at a distance of 78 km from the park. There are frequent interstate trains, so taking a run through rails from cities like Ahmedabad and Rajkot would be quite easy.

From here the National Park is just a matter of a couple of hours drive. There are also shorter routes, which would lead you to the destination quicker but can get a little confusing.

Since it’s a tourist attraction that’s visited very often, there are many taxis and buses that’d run regularly to Sasan Gir from the station.

The GSRTC and Private AC buses are more opted for the journey. Even Though the interstate journey extends on for at least 3-6 hours, it’s accompanied by the scenic route.

There are several buses from major cities in Gujarat including Rajkot, Junagadh, Somnath, and Ahmedabad.

The most preferred route would be from Junagadh, as there’s always a bunch of localities who’d be going to the same destination from here. So if you’re travelling solo, this would be more like the base point from where you’d be guided to Sasan Gir.

Dropping points are mostly near the Forest Department’s Orientation Centre or at the Reception from where the visitors are supposed to acquire permits and passes.

Best time to visit

The park remains open for tourists from October to June ( shut during 16th June till 15th October).

While planning a visit to the National park, there are a few things that you might want to keep in mind,

  • Periods when the wildlife is more active.
  • Accessible periods to the park.
  • Crowds and price hikes during weekends and holidays.

Considering these three factors the ideal period to visit would be during the months between December-March.

The temperature is ideal at a minimum of 10-20 degree Celsius. It also paves the way for a pleasant experience with many activities and explorations.

If photography is your calling, then summers would be your jackpot. The lions get out of their dens to get water and that sight makes it worth all the trouble.

Summers are avoided by many travellers due to heat waves which can get little crazy.

Monsoon is almost never preferred because the safari can get a little risky and may also go in vain as the animals do not get out of their shelters.

Opening hours and charges

The entry charges vary for Indian citizens and foreigners. The other charges that are accounted include those of photography, guide and safari.

Fees are as mentioned below,

For entering the park an entry permit has to be obtained. This can be taken from the Sinh Sadan Orientation Centre (the forest department orientation centre) that’s barely a 5-minute walk from the main gate.

The opening time of the centre is 7 AM to 11 AM in the morning, and from 3 PM to 5:30 PM in the evening. One pass can accommodate 6 people in total.

Another option that avoids all the fuss is the e-permit that can be taken through the online website. Additional charges apply if you prefer this and there are certain tips that might help you through it,

  • Avoid the last-minute hassle and apply prior to your planned day of the visit. You can apply as before as three months itself and wait for it to get approved.
  • The permit does not include fees for the Guide, Vehicle and camera. These have to be particularly paid at the park, so keep some cash in hand at all times.
  • The permit requires valid proof while applying, so keep the soft copies of the photos of those travelling along with you, and certain government-approved IDs.
  • Report to your point of safari at least half an hour earlier, to deal with last-minute formalities and procedures.
  • The Gir Jungle Trail is the only refundable e-permit, all the other e-permits cannot be funded back.
  • The charges that will be included are the Jeep & Driver (1700), Permit Charges (1000), Guide Charges (400), Online Payment Gateway Charges (200) and Service Charges and GST (1000).

Safari in Gir National Park is conducted for about 3 hours around the Gir Jungle Trail and fall under the timings of,

6:45 AM – 9:45 AM

8:30 AM – 11:30 AM

3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Attractions

1)   explore the gir jungle trail safari.

For all the adrenaline junkies and the cautious watchers, here’s a journey that covers it all up for you. The Gir Jungle is among the best Safari trails that show the untouched nature in all its glory.

While the risks that follow in a jungle are brought to you within the safety of the jeep, they’re not really sugar-coated.

The thrills are sure to get to you within the first five minutes of the safari, and you may want to look out for even the most unexpected sights here.

The safari is conducted in jeeps, gypsies, or canters with an experienced guide. They’d be present at all times and will be your eyes for the day. Be it to spot a wildly leaping jungle cat, easily camouflaged insect, Bonelli’s eagle soaring high above our heads or the showstopper Asiatic lion.

2)   Marshes of the Crocodile Breeding Farm

While the park holds pride in being a world-renowned conservative sanctuary, there are several records they hold close to home.

Sheltering the largest number of marsh crocodiles in India, it’s a must-visit place. The idea in itself might sound quite intimidating, but it’s quite the opposite. It’s a welcoming breeze of air to understand the mighty creatures a bit better.

They’re rather seen as creatures from whom we borrowed their home. This is also reflected in their breeding and caring techniques.

It’s awe-strikingly fascinating to watch the shift from the playful looking baby crocs to the majestically scaled ones twisting and snaking their way through land and water.

3)   Sunset at Kamleshwar Dam

If there’s a point in Gir with a charm that can be so gravitating, it’d be the Kamleshwar Dam. Built over the ethereal Hiran River, it’s a perfect viewpoint for watching the sunset into the horizons of the clear blue waters.

Located inside the park, you can always come across a few animals stopping by to refresh themselves.

Sun setting down slowly, small bridges decoratively placed, the expanse of green foliage, shadows of the wildlife cast over the reflective waters. The sight is something that’d be captured in your cameras and diary of memories forever.

It’s also among the pit stops with which you start the trip and end it.

4)   Hot springs of Tulsi Shyam Temple

Walking up the 100 stone stairs, you’ll be led to one of the most beautiful and oldest temples around the state. The idol of Lord Krishna, which is worshipped here, is said to be about 3000 years old.

But what this temple is known even more for, is the presence of the three hot springs. Filled with waters that just tend to get warmer and warmer to the boiling point, it’s believed to contain healing and spiritual powers.

Being rich in natural sulphur, a lot of tourists are drawn here to take a dip and feel rejuvenated.

Another lesser-known fact about the temple is that the road attached to the temple is believed to have a gravity-defying phenomenon. Spend a good amount of time here exploring the architecture, myths, and aesthetics.

5)   Walkthrough the exquisite tribal culture

Undoubtedly one of the most interesting things to do around Gir is a visit across the villages. The tribal settlements here come along with centuries-long tales and cultures. All those treasured and protected within the park.

The most prominent tribes around here are the pastoral community of Maldhari and the agricultural pockets of Siddis.

What’s more interesting is that the Siddis are the only African settlement in India, while in the rest parts of the country they’re pretty scattered. So not only would you be getting an insight to the Afro-Indian world, but you’d also be in for surprises with their differential take on absolutely everything under the sun.

It’s a beautiful cross-cultural tradition and everything from the clothing to cuisine would captivate you.

  • For a better viewing experience, it’s always advised to carry a good pair of binoculars to the park.
  • If you’re carrying a camera, make sure not to use the flash.
  • Choose your clothing wisely and wear non-reflective and subtle colours that don’t draw unwanted attention from the wildlife.
  • Private vehicles will only be allowed after several procedures, but it’s always better to opt for the safari with an experienced guide.
  • Carry essentials such as water, cap/hats, sunscreen, and first aid.
  • You’d be asked to stay in the vehicle with the guide at all times for safety reasons.
  • The trail does not accommodate activities such as camping, hiking, picnicking. There are decent stay options around the park, be it resorts or boot camps.

Gir National Park - A Complete Travel Guide

  • January 15, 2021
  • Updated on March 19, 2023

Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India’s oldest and most visited wildlife sanctuaries, is the last remaining abode of Asiatic lions. The national park, also known as Sasan Gir, is about 37 miles southeast of Junagadh, a district in Gujarat. The Sasan Gir village serves as the official entrance to the sprawling Gir forest. The park has a total area of 1412 square kilometers, of which 258 square kilometers are the core of the national park and the remaining 1153 square kilometers are the wildlife sanctuary.

Indiscriminate hunting expeditions by Indian rulers and British colonists resulted in a drastic decrease in the population of Asiatic lions in the nineteenth century. At the start of the 20th century, only a dozen lions were left in the Gir forest. Junagadh’s rulers, aided by Britishers, then took the initiative to protect the endangered species. In 1969, the Indian government came forward to safeguard the endangered species and declared the area a sanctuary. Subsequently, in 1980, it was recognized as a national park.

How to reach Gir National Park?

By Air – There is no direct flight to Gir. The nearest airport is in Diu, which is 92 kilometers (2 hours drive) from the reserve region. Rajkot, the next closest airport, is approximately 160 kilometers (3.5 hours’ drive) from Gir. Rajkot has direct flights from both Delhi and Mumbai. Diu is not well-connected.

By Rail – Regular trains run from Ahmedabad and Rajkot to Junagadh (65 kilometers from Gir) and Veraval (45 km from Gir). After arriving in Junagadh/Veraval, take a taxi or bus to Sasan Gir. Trains (meter-gauge line) run daily from Junagadh and Veraval to Sasan Gir station, but their timetables may conflict with your jungle safari schedule.

By Road – As previously stated, Gir National Park is 60 kilometers from Junagadh and 360 kilometers from Ahmedabad. From most locations in Gujarat, you can take a bus or a taxi to get to the Sasan Gir region. There are several private and government-owned vehicles that can drop you at the closest access point to the sanctuary. Use Google Maps to find the exact location of Sinh Sadan’s entrance.

What is the best time to visit Gir National Park?

It can get very hot in April and May, but this is the best time for sighting the Asiatic lions. Artificial bodies of water are created throughout the forests to provide animals with easy access to drinking water. This makes it easier for visitors to spot the elusive mammals, but the heat (which can reach 45°) can be oppressive. It is best to visit Gir National Park between November and March when the weather is cool and pleasant. It gets very cold at night in late December and early January . Due to the monsoon season, the park is closed from mid-June to mid-October every year.

Wildlife in Gir National Park?

The Asiatic lion is the main draw of the Gir National Park as it’s the only place in the world where they can be found. In addition to these beautiful creatures, visitors to the Sasan Gir can see 2375 different types of fauna. The most spectacular and popular species include Indian leopards (over 300), striped hyenas, crocodiles, cobras, reindeer, sambar, jackal, fox, vultures, Indian Mongoose, wild boar, porcupines, Monitor lizards, jungle cats, eagle, owl, and many more rare species. Overall, wildlife enthusiasts will have a memorable experience in the densely forested hills, plateaus, and valleys of the Gir Forest

How to plan for Jungle Safari in Gir National Park?

To visit the forest, you must book your Jungle safari well in advance. Permits are only available online and can be reserved at girlion.gujarat.gov.in. To book a safari, you must have your identification details. If you are an Indian citizen, the permit will cost you between Rs.800 and Rs.1000 for up to 6 people. For foreigners, the entry fee for a group of six is between Rs.5600 and Rs.7000. Aside from that, guide and open SUVs are available on the spot for a fee ranging from Rs.2100-Rs.2400. Once you have obtained a permit, you must arrive at the starting point half an hour before the safari for verification. They will check the ID of the member who made the online reservation and issue you the safari permits. Private vehicles are not permitted in the jungle, and each jeep can carry a maximum of six people. In short, a Gir Jungle Trail would be expensive.

The jungle has 13 routes that intersect at various points. The forest authority assigns you a route and requires you to stick to it. The earlier you go, the more likely it is that you will get a better route. Approximate timings of Jeep Safari – The forest is open from Monday to Sunday. The duration of the safari is three hours. There may be slight variations in safari timings depending on the season. Winter Morning :  6:30 am to 9:30 am & 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Winter Evening:   3 pm to 6 pm Summer Morning :  6 am to 9 am & 9 am to 12 am Summer Evening:   4 pm to 7 pm

What are the chances of spotting the Asiatic lion in Gir National Park?

According to local guides, you will spot a lion 80% of the time. However, the type of sighting will vary depending on the route, time of day, and season. Early morning safaris are best because lions are most active at that time. They are usually sleeping in the bushes during the day and can only be seen from a distance. The second option should be an evening safari, and the last option should be an 8:30 a.m. safari. If you visit the park between March and May, you have a good chance of seeing the lion. The giant beasts are out looking for water, and this is your chance to spot them. During the summer, there is a good chance of glimpsing lions with cubs.

Lions are frequently tracked with the assistance of a rescue team. They would find out the lions’ exact location and spread the word. You would soon see the jeeps clustering near the lion’s whereabouts. Unlike African lions , Asiatic lions do not live in large groups, so you are more likely to see 1-2 lions together rather than a pride as seen in African jungles.

If you are unable to obtain a permit or see a lion during a jungle safari, you have another option. Visit Devalia Safari Park, a fenced-in area of the sanctuary where rescued animals are housed. The sightings are guaranteed, but the atmosphere is more akin to a zoo. There is no need to book ahead of time, and you are taken around on a bus.

Tourist Attractions in Sasan Gir?

In case you are staying in Sasan Gir for a couple of days and have some time between safaris, you can visit the local attractions like Kamleshwar Dam, Crocodile Breeding Farm, Tulsi Shyam Temple, and Zamzir Waterfall

Nearby Attractions?

If you have come this far and can afford to linger, it makes sense to visit nearby attractions.

  • Somnath – It is believed to be the first of the 12 jyotirlingas of Shiva. It is a very important pilgrimage and tourist destination in India. Bhalka Tirth, Triveni Tirth, Prabhas Patar Museum, and Somnath Mahadev Temple are worth visiting in Somnath. Somnath is around 70kms away from Sasan Gir
  • Girnar – Situated 60 km from Sasan Gir, Girnar is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimages for the Jain community. Not only did Jain Tirthankara Neminath attain Nirvana at Girnar, but Hindu Lord Dattatreya also performed penance on the top of the hill. Due to its religious significance, several Jain and Hindu temples are built on the ridges and summit of the 3660-foot-long hill. Previously, you had to climb 9,999 steps to reach the final summit, but now a ropeway has been started which drops you at Ma Ambaji temple which is located midway at 5000 steps.
  • Diu Island – A popular beach destination, Diu is located 95 km from Gir. The island is popular for Diu fort, Naida Caves, St. Paul’s Church, Diu Museums, Panikota Fort, and multiple beaches.

Accommodation at Sasan Gir?

If you are looking for a luxury stay, you have three options. Woods at Sasan, The Gateway Hotel Gir Forest by Taj, and The Fern Gir Forest Resort. Woods at Sasan is the most expensive but has rave reviews. It is a contemporary new hotel with manicured gardens and many activities to entertain you. Taj hotel has the advantage of being located on the edge of the Gir forest and comes with the famed Taj hospitality . Looking for budget accommodations? Check out Asiatic Lion Lodge, Gir Pride Resort, Hiran Holidays, and Carina Retreat.

Few Useful Tips for Gir National Park:

  • If you’re going to the park in the winter, bring plenty of warm clothes. You will need gloves, caps, scarves, and jackets for the early morning safari. Wear layers that can be removed as the temperature rises during the day. Scarves and hats should be worn to protect your face and head from dust.

Gir National Park Gir Somnath

  • About Place

About The Location:  This forested, hilly, 1412-sq-km sanctuary about halfway between Veraval and Junagadh is the last refuge of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leopersica). Taking a safari through the thick, undisturbed forests is a joy – even without the added excitement of spotting lions, other wildlife and myriad bird species. Access to the sanctuary is by safari permit only, bookable in advance online .

https://girlion.gujarat.gov.in/GirJungleTrailBooking.aspx

If you miss out on a permit, your other option for lion encounters is at the Devalia Safari Park, a fenced-off part of the sanctuary where sightings are guaranteed but more stage-managed. The sanctuary’s 37 other mammal species, most of which have also increased in numbers, include dainty chital (spotted deer), sambar (large deer), nilgais (blue bull / large antelopes), chousinghas (four-horned antelopes), chinkaras (gazelles), crocodiles and rarely seen leopards. The park is a great destination for birders too, with more than 300 bird species, most of the residents. While the wildlife has been lucky, more than half the sanctuary’s human community of distinctively dressed maldhari (herders) have been resettled elsewhere, ostensibly because their cattle and buffalo were competing for food resources with the antelopes, deer, and gazelles, while also being preyed upon by the lions and leopards. About 1000 people still live in the park, however their livestock accounts for about a quarter of the lions diet.

Twelve kilometers west of Sasan Gir village at Devalia, within the sanctuary precincts, is the Gir Interpretation Zone, better known as simply Devalia. The 4.12-sq-km fenced-off compound is home to a cross-section of Gir wildlife. Chances of seeing lions and leopards here are guaranteed, with 45-minute bus tours departing along the trails hourly. You may also see foxes, mongoose, and blackbuck – the latter being lion fodder.

Brief History : The sanctuary was set up in 1965, and a 259-sq-km core area was declared as a national park in 1975. Since the late 1960s, lion numbers have increased from less than 200 to 674 (Census 2020).

Best time to visit:   in winter from November to March.

Note: Safari trip is 100% online booking at  https://girlion.gujarat.gov.in/

Gir National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, hotels, permits

By Shradha Shahani

Gir National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit hotels permits

Just minutes after the first ray of sun hit Gir National Park, we spot our first lioness standing tall on the dirt track—her mane a lustrous gold. She disappears into the bushes and our jeep moves an inch to catch a glimpse of her again. She is joined by her cubs; one rolls over her stomach, the other tugs her ear. She licks them as they cosy up against her. By now, at least eight jeeps have surrounded this sight. The clicking cameras and whispers don’t faze them. They are comfortable with human company. “That’s the best part about lions. Unlike tigers, they are sociable animals. They walk alongside jeeps and are spotted with their family. It’s a joy watching them,” says Mahida.

Last November, we were lucky to spot a lioness on two out of three safaris. While a lot depends on luck, there are various factors that can make or break your safari experience, from the slot you pick to the proximity of your hotel to the gate. Prakash Mahida , who has been working at the park for nearly 14 years, shares all the insider information so you have the best sightings on your next trip to Gir National Park.

What makes Gir National Park special?

Gir National Park in Gujarat is India's last remaining home to Asiatic lions. The park is home to nearly 600 lions and the Gujarat government takes pride in the initiatives taken to grow the population of lions in the region since its decline due to hunting in the 19th century.

Unlike tigers and leopards who are solitary, lions are social animals. They are the only big cats to live in family units that are known as prides. A pride can include up to three males, a dozen females and their cubs. Lions are also territorial and each male reigns over kilometres of Gir. If you spot a lioness, chances are high that you won’t spot one alone, making the experience all the more exciting. In 2021, Mahida spotted 22 lions on a single safari route. “We were driving through route two at dawn. At first, we saw two males cross the road. As we drove a little further, we spotted nearly five lions, seven lionesses and a litter of cubs. We could see cubs rolling over on their backs, jumping on their mothers and playing with each other. It looked like a scene straight out of The Lion King,” says Mahida.

Over the years, lions have become almost comfortable in the company of humans visiting the national park. So, you won’t just spot lions ambling through the forest or taking shade under a tree, but also get to witness some of the most intimate moments of their lives.

Gir National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit hotels permits

What to spot at Gir National Park?

Mahida says the key to a great lion spotting is to listen to what the forest is telling you. Trackers and guides keep their eyes and ears peeled for fresh pug marks, a sambal’s warning and also the call of a scavenger bird. While the lion is the star attraction of the park, the dry and deciduous forests of Gir are home to a host of other animals such as the sambar (the largest Indian deer), chowsingha (the world’s only four-horned antelope), Indian fox, jackal, striped hyena and the black buck.

The national park also has nearly 425 species of birds and is the habitat of critically endangered white-backed and long-billed vultures, the Egyptian vulture, the greater-spotted eagle and the endangered Palla’s fish eagle. While driving through the park, keep your eyes peeled for the Asian paradise flycatcher, the red-breasted flycatcher and the fantail.

What's the best time to go to Gir National Park?

The best time to visit Gir National Park is in March, says Mahida. This is when the winter is just starting to fade and the summer hasn’t set in yet. The forest begins to dry up, and lions and other animals are forced to visit the manmade ponds in the park. While the peak summer (April and May) is great for sightings, the mercury tips over 40°C and is not favourable for sightseeing. Mahida says this is a good time for wildlife photographers to visit the park. The winter months of November to February are pleasant, however, it’s important to be patient during your safaris, as the greenery and low visibility could make it difficult to track animal movement.

How many safaris should you do during a 3-night stay?

Mahida recommends at least three-four safaris during your stay, alternating between the morning and afternoon slots. Rest on the day of your arrival. Pick a morning slot on one day, an afternoon on the other, and an evening on the third for the most diverse sightings. Keep some buffer time right before your departure as the park is over three hours from the airport.

What are the best safari slots at Gir National Park?

Gir National Park offers three safari slots—two in the morning and one in the afternoon. “Lions are most active early in the morning. So, if you want to spot them ambling through the forest or playing with their cubs, pick the 6.30am slot. The mid-morning slot is good for leopard sightings because they come out when the lion starts to rest. And in the afternoon slot, you are likely to spot lions resting,” says Mahida.

The timings vary as per season. Here are the slots:

Winter (16 October to 28 February) - 6.30am to 9.30am; 9:30am to 12:30pm; 3pm to 6pm. Summer (1 March to 15 June) - 6am to 9am; 9am to 12pm; 4pm to 7pm.

How to book a safari permit at Gir and how much does it cost?

The permit can be purchased from the official Gujarat government website. Permits get sold out very quickly, so Mahida advises booking them at least 60 to 90 days in advance. A permit for a safari costs Rs1,000; there’s also a per-guest entry charge of Rs200.

Gir National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit hotels permits

How to book a jeep and guide at Gir?

The permit does not include the jeep and guide charges. The hotel you’re staying at can arrange for a jeep and a pick-up from the hotel about 30 minutes before the gates open. The jeep costs Rs3,000, whereas a guide comes at an additional cost of Rs400. The guide is assigned by the park authorities once you present your permit at the gate. However, if you wish, you can pick your own guide at an additional cost.

Which zones are the best at Gir National Park?

Unlike many national parks in India, Gir does not follow a zone system. The park has 13 routes, and to ensure they are not overburdened with too many jeeps, the route is assigned to the guide at the time of entry. However, trackers do keep an eye out for pug marks, the alert call of a sambal or a scavenger bird to get a sense of the best route to spot a lion.

What are the best hotels in Gir?

If an early morning safari is on your list, Gir Serai - IHCL SeleQtions (doubles from Rs13,000; website ) is your best bet at making it in time. The hotel is less than a five-minute drive from the main gate. While the 38 rooms are basic, they come with all mod-cons. The restaurant offers a taste of the local Kathiawadi cuisine, and on every Saturday guests are treated to a Mashira Nritya performance by the tribal Afro-Indian Siddi community. If luxury is on your mind, and a 20-minute drive to the gate is not a deterrent, head to Aramness Gir (doubles from Rs1,02,000; website ) . The 18 kothis are double-storey suites and come with bathtubs, outdoor showers, shaded courtyards, first-floor verandahs and swimming pools inspired by the stepwells of Gujarat. At Woods at Sasan (doubles from Rs29,000; website ) , the experience goes beyond the lion and jeep safari. There’s birdwatching at dawn (try spotting the 300 avian species found here), lunches cooked over a wood fire in the jungle, rail journeys through forests and a vintage car ride to the Hiran River at teatime. After a long day out, unwind at Som Spa, which offers yoga sessions and Ayurvedic treatments. Also, a 20-minute drive from the gate is The Postcard Gir (doubles from Rs32,000; website ) , a 15-key boutique property surrounded by mango orchards. When you’re not busy spotting lions, the folks at the property will arrange for picnics, leisurely nature walks or a trip to Diu.

Aramness Sasan Gir Gujarat

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do in Gir?

For visitors who don’t manage to spot a big cat in the wild, the gypsy safari at Devalia National Park (a 20-minute drive from the main park) guarantees a sighting. The park is an enclosed sanctuary for lions, leopards, foxes, mongooses and blackbucks that roam freely within this space. Unlike Gir, tickets to Devalia can be booked on the spot.

Somnath Temple, which sits by the Arabian Sea, is an hour’s drive from the national park. The temple is steeped in history and is believed to be the place where the first of the twelve jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva appeared. Catch the sound-and-light show that illuminates the temple every day at 7.45pm.

One can also explore the ancient city of Junagadh, which houses Emperor Ashoka’s rock edicts from the third century BC and a unique blend of Indo-Islamic, British and Gothic architecture. About a 2.5-hour drive away, numerous 12th-century Jain temples sit on the 3,300-foot mountain of Girnar. Woods at Sasan Gir organises a host of activities, including guided birdwatching walks to sight a few of the many 300 species in Gir. You can also get a taste of the village life with a meter-gauge railway journey that takes you through the forests of Sasan to Kansiya Nes, home to the Maldhari or the herdsmen community of Gujarat. At lunchtime, the hotel hosts a meal in the forests where you can try local delicacies hot off a wood fire, and come dinner time, feast on barbeque under a starry night sky.

Things to Do

Jeep safari tours, where to stay nearby, how to get there, tips for your visit, gir national park.

Gir National Park is located in the state of Gujarat in west-central India. Here, 545 square miles (1,412 square kilometers) of hilly, dry scrubland serves as a wildlife sanctuary for the Asiatic lion (the only place in the world where these creatures still exist). Once almost hunted to extinction and listed as critically endangered in the year 2000, Asiatic lion numbers have recovered well due to conservation efforts that date back to 1965. According to a recent census , the total population of lions residing in Gir National Park numbers 674.

Gir's specific ecosystem makes it a preferred habitat for other animals, as well, like jackals, leopards, antelope, and deer. The seasonal rivers and four human-made reservoirs here are home to crocodiles. These watering holes attract over 300 species of resident birds, as well. Droves of visitors flock to this park each year (even though it's considered an expensive trip) to attend a bucket list safari tour that puts them face-to-face with Asiatic lions in the wild.

Most people come to Gir National Park to see the park's two most prized predators: lions and leopards. They embark on jeep safari tours, complete with guides, that take them on one of the pre-determined safari routes in the park. A three-day safari, which includes lodging, delivers maximum opportunities for wildlife viewing, as this multi-day experience is timed perfectly.

You can also access the park with a private vehicle (for a fee), but certain restrictions apply, and you still must hire a guide. Or, you can also opt for a shorter, guided minibus tour that takes you through the park's Interpretation Zone, a fenced-off compound located off-site. This option allows you to view a cross-section of the park's of wildlife, including lions, within a 20- to 30-minute drive.

Avid birders flock to Gir to discover the area's 300 species of birds, including the critically endangered white-backed and long-billed vultures. A two-day birdwatching tour , guided by local experts, can accommodate as little as two people, as well as larger groups.

Lastly, mingle with the distinctively dressed Maldhari (a tribal herder community). Only approximately 1,000 native people still live on the grounds of Gir National Park, as the large predators consume about one-quarter of their livelihood of cattle and buffalo.

Unfortunately, hiking is not permitted in Gir National Park. There are no trails within the sanctuary due to the prevalence of lion and other predator encounters.

The Asiatic lion is a sure sighting on a jeep safari tour. Encounters with the Indian leopard, jungle cat, hyena, desert cat, honey badger, and mongoose are also prolific. Trained drivers and guides will take you on one of eight driving routes in the park where you may also see blackbucks, boar, chinkara, chital, and the rare four-horned antelope.

In order to hire a jeep (gypsy), you must first buy a permit for either Gir National Park (Gir Jungle Trail) or the Gir Interpretation Zone (in the neighboring Devalia Safari Park). Permits can be obtained in advance and must be presented at the reception center in the government-owned Sinh Sadan guesthouse (the safari entry point). Arrive around 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled safari departs so that you have plenty of time to check-in and meet your guide and vehicle.

Upmarket hotels also conduct their own jeep safaris, albeit at a higher rate, and will take care of all the arrangements, including bookings and permits. This preferable option, particularly for foreigners, takes the guesswork out of the inevitable itinerary challenges that may come with a DIY adventure.

There are several lodging options both at the park's entrance and just outside the park's boundary. If you're looking to save money and don't mind staying farther away, choose from a few inexpensive hotels on the route to the Gir Interpretation Zone.

  • Sinh Sadan : Located at the entrance to the sanctuary sits Sinh Sadan, the park's most economical lodging option and the place where the local tourists stay. The guesthouse is nestled among lush gardens, and rooms offer a choice of air conditioning or not. Do note—this lodging option is a challenge to book, as reservations need to be made within one month of travel and can only be taken by phone or fax. Also, rates here are higher for foreigners.
  • The Gateway Hotel Gir Forest : This hotel offers a more luxurious stay right on the outskirts of the Gir Forest. Here, you can enjoy rooms and luxury suites—some with a view of the river or the garden—which include en-suite bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and a spacious balcony. An on-site spa and fitness center helps you unwind after a long day of safari-touring, and the hotel's restaurant serves regional, home-style cuisine.
  • Woods at Sasan : Mindful travelers may want to consider a stay at the eco-conscious Woods at Sasan. This lodging option is ideal for safari-goers looking for a wellness experience, as it specializes in personalized Ayurvedic treatments and yoga. The carefully curated property offers stand-alone studios and villas with up to three bedrooms, situated in an 8-acre mango orchard on the fringe of the forest.
  • Maneland Jungle Lodge : Located about two miles from the park's entrance is the popular and inexpensive Maneland Jungle Lodge, which features a grand lodge and 17 jungle cottages. Choose from deluxe rooms or a deluxe villa, all with air conditioning, and enjoy locally sourced and homegrown organic delicacies at the hotel's restaurant.

Gir National Park is situated in the southwest part of Gujarat state, 360 kilometers from Ahmedabad, 65 kilometers from Junagadh, and 40 kilometers from Veraval. The entrance to the park is located at Sasan Gir Village and includes the park's reception and orientation center. The Gir Interpretation Zone is about 7 miles (12 kilometers) west of the village, at Devalia. And, the nearest major airport is in Ahmedabad, about seven hours away, with smaller airports in both Rajkot (three hours away) and Dui (two hours away).

The nearest train station in Junagadh offers the easiest way to access the park. Trains run directly from both from Ahmedabad and Rajkot, and then it's an hour-and-a-half drive to Sasan Gir. You can hire a taxi from the train station, or public buses run regularly to Sasan Gir.

Alternatively, you can book a private bus from Ahmedabad to Sasan Gir and have it drop you right next to the Sinh Sadan guesthouse and reception center. It's more convenient than the train, but the journey takes seven hours.

  • The most popular time to visit Gir National Park is December through March. However, it can get very crowded during these peak times, rendering long waits. Alternatively, come during the hot and dry season (from March through May), as animals are easily spotted during this time when they congregate near the water's edge.
  • Embark on a morning safari when the lions are the most active. Lions tend to sleep throughout the day and are harder to spot on a mid-day tour.
  • Gir National Park is open from mid-October until mid-June, with jeep tours starting at 6:30 a.m., 9 a.m., and 3 p.m. The Gir Interpretation Zone is open year-round, Thursday to Tuesday (closed Wednesday), 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., and 3 p.m. until dusk (around 5 p.m.).
  • Safari bookings can be made through the park up to three months in advance, and within 48 hours before a scheduled tour. Only 30 vehicles are allowed in the national park at a time, so permits for the Gir Jungle Trail are limited and can only be booked online.
  • The eight safari routes are randomly assigned by a computer (along with a driver and guide) when you present your permit. Vehicles must all move in one direction along the route, without reversing or diverting.
  • E-permits to Gir National Park are issued per vehicle, with up to six occupants. The cost varies, depending on the day of the week, with weekends and public holidays being the most expensive.
  • If you're planning a DIY experience, prepare to pay for a guide to accompany you inside the park, a jeep, and DSLR camera charge. (The camera fee for foreigners is unreasonably high. As a result, many find the experience to be disappointing and not worth the money.)

Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary , also known as Sasan-Gir , is a wildlife sanctuary and protected forest area in Gujarat , India . It is considered one of the most important protected natural areas in Asia due to the rare animals living here, particularly the pure Asiatic Lions ( Panthera leo persica ).

The scientific classification of the various types of lion has changed: Asiatic lions are now viewed as an isolated population of a subspecies that includes lions in Central and West Africa, plus the regionally extinct North African lion. Lions of East and Southern Africa are classified into another subspecies.

Understand [ edit ]

The park has a total area of 1412 km², from which 258 km² are in the fully protected national park and the remaining 1153 km² make up the sanctuary.

sasan gir safari location

History [ edit ]

The Gir forest area and the Asiatic lions were first "protected" by the Nawab of the princely state of Junagadh at the start of the 20th century, which saved the lion population from being wiped out by trophy hunters. In 1965 the national park was established.

In 2005 there were only 52 Asiatic lions in the wild, but conservation efforts have resulted in a major population increase, with over 500 Asiatic lions now living.

Climate [ edit ]

Between April to June it can be very hot. From November to early February, the weather is pretty cool, and this is the most pleasant season to visit. It can be chilly enough at the end of December to require winter clothing.

From 16 June to 15 October, the park is closed due to the summer monsoon.

Get in [ edit ]

It seems most accepted to spend the night at a hotel in Junagadh and take a bus or taxi to Gir early in the morning.

By plane [ edit ]

The closest airport with commercial service is in Rajkot , which has regular flights from Mumbai and Delhi . From Rajkot it is about 160 km to Gir.

By train [ edit ]

There are regular trains to Junagadh (65 km from Gir) and Veraval (45 km from Gir) from other parts of India, notably Rajkot and Ahmedabad .

There is reportedly a once-daily train from Junagadh direct to Gir, which however misses the times for the lion safari in the park.

By bus [ edit ]

There are buses from Ahmedabad.

Fees and permits [ edit ]

See the Gir National Park Website to book a jeep safari for Gir National Park. This website is frequently not working. Beware private tour companies that claim to represent the national park.

  • Among the many species living here, the Asiatic lion is surely the most treasured of all, as the Gir Forest National Park is the only place in the world where these rare lions have survived. A breeding programme was set up and so far succeeded in bringing forward some 180 lions. In 2015 the population here was 523.
  • Other fauna is diverse and plentiful and includes at least 38 mammals and some 300 species of birds. Some 37 different species of reptiles have been documented too. Among the most spectacular possible sightings are Indian Leopards, jungle cats, striped hyenas, sloth bears and Indian cobras. There are golden jackals, Indian mongoose, Ratels and Indian Palm Civets as well as chital deer, nilgai, four-horned Antelopes, wild boars and many other animals.
  • Flora in the area is also of high value, with over 500 plant species documented.

Photography [ edit ].

Photography is the best way to capture the beauty of Gir National Park. You can take photos of wildlife and nature, as well as pictures of beautiful scenery, sunrise, and sunset, as well as night sky photography.

GIR NATIONAL PARK: HOW TO PLAN A PERFECT JUNGLE RETREAT

The Gir National Park is one of the many fascinating wildlife sanctuaries of Gujarat. It is renowned as the only home of the Asiatic Lions. In fact, Gir is only second to the African continent where you can see lions roaming free in the wild. Also, Gir has garnered attention for successfully saving Asiatic Lions from the brink of extinction. Besides lions, Gir is the habitat of several other species, particularly birds. Gir further escalates interest as two tribes live here: the Maldharis and the African – originated Siddis. How these fearless tribes live in harmony with the wildlife is indeed riveting.

So, here goes the tidbits you need to know for visiting Gir National Park.

Table of Contents

About Gir National Park:

Back in the colonial era, Sasan Gir served as the private hunting grounds for the Nawab of Junagadh. Large scale hunting, both by the Nawabs and the British, led to a steady decline in the numbers of lions. As a result, roughly a dozen lions were left surviving by the end of the 19th century. Both the British and the Nawab realized the gravity of the situation as also felt it necessary to start immediate conservation of lions. The first initiative to save the lions came from the very Nawabs of Junagadh, whose reckless hunting sprees previously led to such an alarming scenario.   In 1965, 1,153 sq. km of Gir was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary and the rest of 258 square km a National Park in order to protect the endangered species.

The Gir National Park is located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. It is 44 km from Somnath, 76 km from Junagadh and around 80 km from Amreli.

Why Gir National Park is famous:

Gir is famous for the fact that it is the only place on earth where Asiatic Lions are found. The number of Asiatic Lions improved over the years. At present, there are 253 of them.

How to reach:

  • Rajkot (165 km) is the nearest airport. There are direct flights from New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai to Rajkot.
  • Junagadh (65 km) and Veraval (45 km) are the nearest rail stations.
  • Buses (both government and private) and cabs to reach Sasan Gir are available from Ahmedabad, Junagadh and Veraval.
  • In our case, we boarded the Somnath Express from Ahmedabad. An overnight journey later, we reached Veraval in the early morning. After exploring Somnath for a day and a half, we went to Sasan Gir by cab.

What is the best time to visit Gir National Park:

The Gir National Park remains closed from 16 th June to 15 th October every year.

The weather in April and May is extremely hot and humid. Hence, this is the perfect time for wildlife sightings, especially Asiatic Lions. If you can face the unbearable heat, plan a trip to Gir during this time. Also, tourists will be lesser as compared to other times of the year.

History of Gir National Park

Once, the expanse that now cradles the Sasan Gir National Park served as the hunting grounds for the British during their reign in India. They pursued the colossal lions and tigers with fervour, wearing their hunts as badges of honour. The year 1899 witnessed a stark decline in the lion population within the Gir forest, attributed to a ravaging famine. In response, Lord Curzon called off his planned hunting excursion to Gir and fervently appealed to the local residents to safeguard the remaining lion populace.

Over time, the Indian Government imposed a ban on hunting and killing in 1960. This intervention heralded a resurgence in the Gir lion population, which thrives under 24x7 surveillance today, accessible solely through captivating photo safaris. This very sanctuary, the Gir National Park, now boasts the accolade of Asia's most safeguarded wildlife haven. The inception of a lion breeding initiative brought forth an augmentation of approximately 180 lions across the park and its adjacent regions.

Vivid Wildlife in the Sanctuary: A Glimpse into the Gir Lion Park

Within this realm, one encounters a tapestry of life, including nearly 38 varieties of mammals, a myriad of insects spanning over 2,000 types, 37 diverse reptile species, and an astonishing assortment of 300 bird species.

The verdant confines are inhabited by a vibrant assembly of herbivores, such as the Nilgai, Chital, Wild boar, Four-horned Chinkara, Sambar, and the graceful Antelope. Moreover, the peripheries of the park offer glimpses of the spirited Blackbucks. This harmonious coexistence paints a vivid tableau of nature's grandeur and diversity.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
