  • Zambezi Sunset Cruise

A Zambezi sunset cruise is the perfect cherry on top of a luxury African safari . It provides guests with the opportunity to coast the fourth longest river on the continent during the most spectacular time of the day. African sunsets are legendary amongst visitors, and a sunset cruise offers one of the best occasions to enjoy the late afternoon embers setting the bush afire with its warm beauty.

  • African Safari

The Zambezi River swells with its prolific bird- and wildlife. Passengers aboard the safari boat will typically be spoiled with sightings of hippos, crocodiles, elephants and giraffes. Flights of open-billed storks, African finfoot, sacred ibises and yellow-billed stork color the riverbanks.

The river’s most striking feature, however, is the majestic Victoria Falls . The ‘Smoke that Thunders’ remains omnipresent during the cruise, sending sails of frothy mists upriver. A typical Zambezi sunset cruise lasts approximately two to three hours. A variety of drinks are available to guests, from soft drinks and beer to local spirits and wine.

African sunset guide – Safari, savannah, sea & sundowners

Another magical sunset on the African plains, with silhouetted trees and zebras, Amboseli

Africa is huge and untamed. It calls to the wild at heart and daring of spirit. But more than that, its beauty moves all those who set eyes on this magnificent continent.

An African sunset is a sight to behold. The horizons stretch on endlessly and provide an awe-inspiring kaleidoscope of hues. It’s true, the African continent showcases some of the most spectacular skies .

Then, there is the added magic of Africa’s diverse wildlife, vast savannahs , stunning deserts, and gorgeous oceans. It’s something you have to see for yourself.

That said, this post will look at the best times and places to see an African sunset as well as the best ways to enjoy one.

Sunset in Africa: Best Time to See One

Bird of prey silhouette against orange sunset hues and stormy clouds in the background, Kalahari desert

You might want to know when the best time of year is to catch a sunset in Africa. Luckily, sunsets happen 365 days a year – sometimes 366 days – so no matter what time of year you go, you’ll be able to witness one.

If you’re looking for that extraordinary, African red sunset, then you may want to visit in spring or autumn . Or, between the wet and dry seasons in the equatorial regions. In these seasons, the sky has enough cloud cover to create a stunning palette of colors and wispy swirls. This can make for a breathtaking sight.

Africa is enormous and extends far into both the northern and southern hemispheres. In the southern regions, spring happens between September and November and autumn lies between March and May. Whereas in the northern parts of the continent, the opposite is true.

The countries that lie around the equator aren’t really affected by the typical four seasons. Instead, they tend to have wet and dry seasons and stay relatively hot all year around. So do some research on the seasons when you know which country you’ll be visiting.

African Sunsets: 4 Places to Experience One

You know when to go. Now, you need to know where. Below is a list of four great places to visit to experience a sunset in Africa.

The Garden Route, South Africa

Spectacular sunset over the rocky coastline of Tsitsikamma, in the Garden Route

If South Africa is your destination, you’re in luck. The Garden Route is a vibrant stretch of coastline on the south-eastern side of South Africa. It extends from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape, claiming its name from its diverse and vibrant vegetation.

The Garden Route is a popular attraction for South Africans and tourists alike. If you decide to drive along the Garden Route as part of your adventure-focused trip itinerary , you’ll experience a variety of magical sunsets in South Africa.

The Garden Route showcases sunsets over lakes, lagoons, beaches, the ocean, and forests. Each day will bring a different scene and landscape – great for any photo album.

The Masai Mara, Kenya

Eland silhouette at sunset, Masai Mara, Kenya

Seemingly-limitless African horizons and beautiful sunsets go hand in hand in Kenya. This country is a diverse land with incredible sights and landscapes. It’s home to the Great Rift Valley , lakes, mountains, and the coastline of the Indian Ocean. These areas and habitats provide amazing settings for African sunsets.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. This reserve contains a huge variety of animals and is also home to the Great Wildebeest Migration .

The migration is a truly incredible phenomenon. Over two million mammals journey around the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti. Seeing a sunset here, with thousands of animals making their way across the savannah, is an unforgettable experience.

Namib Desert, Namibia

Lone gemsbok at sunset, with orange dunes as a backdrop

Namibia presents something different from the savannah and sea settings above. This country has a unique landscape where mountains meet the desert , and the desert meets the ocean. You won’t forget the powerful shades of color creeping over the impressive dunes.

The Namib Desert is coastal in nature and situated in Southern Africa. The name means “ vast place ”, which hints at its size. Dune 45 is the most popular spot to watch the sun go down in the desert. It rises 170 m into the air, making it a great position to witness one of these spectacles of nature.

The sunset casts apricot-colored shades across the dunes, creating a scene that looks like a moving oil painting . The desert also has some incredible wildlife that you can see up close and personal on a Namibia safari .

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Sunset over Nungwi beach, with pink orange clouds and local fishermen boats

Tanzania is in East Africa and is home to the formidable Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti National Park . This country is a true representation of what Africa has to offer in a sunset – dusty , wild , and magical .

Just offshore Tanzania lies Zanzibar, an archipelago of islands which has some of the best beaches in the world . It’s famous for its cocktail sunsets and Indian Ocean views. Picture turquoise waters, white sandy stretches, and palm-fringed beaches – the perfect tropical setting .

Besides the exotic scenery, Zanzibar also offers a wonderful opportunity to catch a sunset from the sea . In fact, you can watch it from a dhow (an authentic Arabic sailing boat) while trailing your hand in the ocean.

How to Enjoy an African Savannah Sunset

A romantic sundowner in Onguma Game Reserve, Namibia

When thinking of Africa, most people picture wildlife and open plains. And with good reason; this continent is famous for its African savannah.

Seeing sunsets over the sea and mountains is truly magical. But, for the real deal, you have to experience an African safari sunset in the proper way – with savannah around you and a sundowner in your hand .

Across Africa, there is a tradition upheld by many game rangers and individuals alike. When embarking on an afternoon or evening safari, there is a planned break about halfway-through the game drive.

Your game ranger will pull out the cooler box and set out some camper chairs. This is the cue for you to spend a magical 20-30 minutes enjoying the sounds of the bush . You can sit back and sip on a cold one while watching the sun go down.

You might even witness this beautiful African sunset with animals roaming the wonderful landscape around you.

This tradition also extends to sunrises in Africa . The difference lies in the beverages you drink and, of course, in the time of day. Think crack of dawn rather than evening, and bush coffee in place of beer.

Africa Sunset – Boundless Beauty

Spotted hyena resting by a glowing waterhole at sunset, Sabi Sand

Africa’s diverse variety of landscapes make for amazing sunset scenes . Ocean views, desert dunes, mountains, and vast plains – this continent has it all.

For the real African sunset experience, plan your dream safari . You’ll have the ultimate sundowner experience!

‘It’s our moment.’ Eritrean rider is the first Black cyclist to win a Tour de France stage

A man with sunglasses on his forehead smiles while looking at a medal he is holding in his hand

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Biniam Girmay grew up in Eritrea watching the Tour de France cycling race on TV each July with his father.

This week, Girmay became the first Black African rider — actually the first Black cyclist from any continent — to win a stage of the three-week-long premier cycling event.

“I never dreamed to be part of [the] Tour de France,” Girmay said Monday after wiping away some tears.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Next year, Rwanda will become the first African country to host road cycling’s world championships.

“It’s our moment to show our strength and our potential,” Girmay said.

Before the podium celebration, Girmay went over and greeted Eritrean fans waving their country’s green, red and blue flag.

The initial plan for Girmay’s Belgian team was for him to lead out the sprint for a leading teammate. But when Girmay lost touch with his teammates on the 143-mile Stage 3 , with many riders caught behind a crash, he was given the green light by his coaches.

“I heard on the radio to do it for myself...,” Girmay said. “Then it’s just close your eyes and go for victory.”

$32 for one cigarette? In Gaza, even a nicotine fix is hard to come by

Sometimes in Gaza it feels like a cigarette is the only thing that might help. But even that is out of reach.

He edged past other sprinters at the finish in Turin, Italy. (The Tour started in Italy for the first time this year and moved into France on Tuesday.)

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia to become the first Black African to take a victory in one of road cycling’s Grand Tours. But Girmay’s Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting hit in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

He was more careful in his celebration this time.

“This win is worth more,” he said. “I don’t have words to explain how important this victory is for me and for my continent.”

Girmay started riding in single-day races at home in Eritrea and then left home for the International Cycling Union’s development center in Aigle, Switzerland, in 2018. In 2021, he won a silver medal in the under-23 road race at the world championships in Belgium. Then at the start of 2022, Girmay won a single-day classic in Belgium.

Britain goes to the polls, and a wipeout is in the works. What to know about the election

The election’s expected booting out of Britain’s Conservative party would end 14 years of rule. Economic discontent and immigration top voter concerns.

Merhawi Kudus and Daniel Teklehaimanot paved the way for Girmay when they became the first Eritreans to ride in the Tour de France in 2015 — riding for the South African MTN-Qhubeka team.

Human rights groups describe Eritrea as one of the world’s most repressive countries. Since winning independence from Ethiopia three decades ago, the small Horn of Africa nation has been led by President Isaias Afwerki, who has never held an election.

Riders from only one other African country — South Africa — have won Tour stages: Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Four-time Tour champion Chris Froome was born and raised in Kenya but represented Britain.

“This is so important for cycling,” said Aike Visbeek, the performance director for Girmay’s Intermarche-Wanty team.

“There is a whole continent that has been waiting for this,” Visbeek said. “It’s been done now, and I hope it will open the floodgates for more riders from Africa. He’s an ambassador in every way.”

Girmay isn’t done yet. He’s now high up in the points standings for the Tour’s green jersey that goes to the race’s top sprinter. And there are a handful more sprinting stages to come in the 21 stages of the race.

And he’s just 24.

“It’s my time,” Girmay said. “Now we are really part of the big races. We have a lot of victories so it’s our time, it’s our moment. I never cry, but inside I am, I just have no words.”

Starts Nairobi/Ends Nairobi – We’ll pick you up from the airport or your hotel. Travel comfortably in your own pop-top safari minivan. Switch in Tanzania to a private pop-top 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep. You will see, feel and learn so much about Africa’s wildlife, land and culture in this very complete 13-day safari adventure. We will explore 8 of Kenya’s and Tanzania’s finest parks, with their stunning diversity of vistas and animals – beautiful lakes, towering cliffs, sweeping grasslands and the multitude of wild game filling these panoramas. Tanzania will be no less spectacular with its vast Serengeti plains, hosting wildlife in the millions. The great Ngorongoro Crater is the most spectacular volcanic caldera in the world. Its sunrises and sunsets at the crater rim burst with colour. This is the best of Africa and Natural World Safaris is ready to share it with you! 13 days will provide you with plenty of time to absorb the many parks and reserves of our safari, so the pace will be relaxed but thorough. We start off in the north of Kenya at Samburu National Reserve with its rugged, pristine landscape. Most of our game viewing will be along the Ewaso Nyiro River with its life nourishing waters. The game here is varied with notably lion, cheetah and leopard taking top billing along with gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe. If you wish you can also explore the nearby Shaba and Buffalo Springs Reserves. Then the temperature cools off as we move on to the Mt. Kenya/Laikipia region, arriving at the OlPejeta Conservancy. The Conservancy hosts the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. Don’t miss the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary also located here. It’s home to orphaned and rescued chimps – the only place in Kenya where you can see them. We move on to the Rift Valley lake country with a visit to Lake Nakuru National Park. This beautiful park features dramatic escarpments and acacia forest. The lake itself shows off stunning pink flamingos that gather here. At the shore you’ll take in waterbuck, zebra, gazelle and buffalo. The park is also famous for its population of the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. There’s wonderful bird watching at nearby Lake Naivasha National Park. We’ll take a water safari here and then a guided walking safari at nearby Crescent Island to view grazing giraffe, zebra, impala and a myriad of bird species. And how about a bicycle safari? We’ll take an afternoon hike at Hell’s Gate National Park and if you wish you can even bicycle past the wildlife along the way. Then we travel to Kenya’s most famous wildlife habitat – the Maasai Mara Game Reserve – home to the big cats and its significant population of lion. The Mara is a majestic habitat and you’ll be on the lookout for leopard, cheetah plus large herds of elephant and buffalo. The Mara is also home to the great migration of wildebeest and zebra pouring in from the Serengeti, crossing the Mara River. There, the drama is all about the animals crossing the river and the crocodiles awaiting them. If you wish you can partake in an optional guided nature walk and a visit to a Masai village to meet these herdsmen and learn about their lives. We now cross the border into Tanzania and Serengeti National Park, the lands from which the great migration begins. The endless grasslands of the Serengeti boast millions of wildlife, especially wildebeest and zebra. But the Big Five are here, as well as gazelle, impala, hartebeest and cheetah. A not-to-be-missed feature of the Serengeti is the World Heritage Site of Ngorongoro Crater. This is the world’s largest fully intact volcanic caldera. From the crater’s rim you will marvel at the most awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets. But even more impressive, traveling down to the crater floor you’ll enter a world of intense wildlife. Here you’ll be amongst the highest density of lion and predators in Africa! But not to worry, they’ll keep their distance plus your experienced guide knows his way around this amazing eco-system. Our next Tanzania park is smaller but contains its own colourful drama. Lake Manyara National Park hosts millions of vibrant flamingos and other bird life. The park also features great herds of elephant and the very unique tree climbing lion. Now it’s time to cross back into Kenya and pay a visit to our final animal habitat, Amboseli National Park. Seated near the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the park is a blend of savannah plains and deep green swampland. You’ll have many opportunities to view elephant here, but there’s also lion, cheetah, hyena and hundreds of bird species. And don’t forget to enjoy the magnificent views of nearby Mt. Kilimanjaro. Finally, after 13 days, 8 parks and countless animals, it’s time to head back to Nairobi.

All Inclusive.

Your 13 Day Discovery Safari includes park entrance fees, accommodations and meals. Natural World Safaris always offers a wide choice of accommodations. Depending on your budget and style choose from economy, comfort, superior comfort or luxury safari lodges or tented camps.

I had a remarkable time and experience during this adventurous tour together with my friends. Not only was it fun but also educating and I fully enjoyed my time with the incredible services that were offered by the team. Special thanks to Dexter who remained flexible and put so much effort for our tour to be a success! I would definitely recommend all globe trotters to use African Sunsets Travel. Thank you.

The package was excellent and delivered as described. The accommodation was overall in good standards. Communication was easy and professional, the host was knowledgeable and responsive to queries and very organised.

I with friends had a great 3-days safari with an excellent experience! Everything has been done on the highest level, from preliminary communication up to transfer to the airport. Hotels selection was very good. Both hotels were comfortable, cozy, with a lot of tasty food.

Biniam Girmay grew up in Eritrea watching the Tour de France on TV each July with his father.

He idolized three-time world champion Peter Sagan but never dared to dream of matching the Slovakian cyclist’s exploits.

Then came Monday, when Girmay became the first Black African rider — actually the first Black cyclist from any continent — to win a Tour stage.

“I never dreamed to be part of (the) Tour de France,” Girmay said after wiping away some tears.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Next year, Rwanda will become the first African country to host cycling’s road world championships.

“It’s our moment to show our strength and our potential,” Girmay said.

And to think the initial plan for Girmay’s Intermarche-Wanty team from Belgium was for the Eritrean to lead out the sprint for Belgian teammate Gerben Thijssen. But when Girmay lost touch with his teammates in the frenetic finale, which saw Mark Cavendish and others caught behind by a crash, Girmay was given the green light.

“I heard on the radio to do it for myself, because I had already lost the wheel,” Girmay said. “For me it’s always easier to find (space) myself. Then it’s just close your eyes and go for victory.”

Image

Sagan, who won 12 stages in his Tour career, would have been proud of the way Girmay squirmed his way through a tiny space to edge past Fernando Gaviria — a winner of seven Grand Tour stages — at the line.

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia to become the first Black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour. But Girmay’s Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting hit in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

Girmay was more careful in his celebration this time.

“This win is worth more,” Girmay said.

Then at the start of 2022, Girmay won a single-day classic at the Gent-Wevelgem race in Belgium.

Merhawi Kudus and Daniel Teklehaimanot paved the way for Girmay when they became the first Eritreans to ride in the Tour de France in 2015 — when Teklehaimanot became the first African rider to wear the King of the Mountains polka-dot jersey. They rode for the South African MTN-Qhubeka team.

“Now the world can see what is possible when we give these guys a chance.”

And Girmay isn’t done yet.

He’s now high up in the points standings for the Tour’s green jersey that goes to the race’s top sprinter. And there are a handful more sprinting stages to come in this year’s race.

He’s just 24.

“It’s my time,” Girmay said. “Now we are really part of the big races. We have a lot victories so it’s our time, it’s our moment. I never cry, but inside I am, I just have no words.”

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay makes Tour de France history, becoming the first black rider to win stage

Sport Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay makes Tour de France history, becoming the first black rider to win stage

A Black African cyclist stands smiling with fist pumped at the end of a stage in the Tour de France.

Eritrea's Biniam Girmay has made history, becoming the first black rider to win a Tour de France stage.

Girmay said his sprint win in the mostly flat third leg of this year's race was "for all Africans".

"We must be proud now. We are really part of the big races," he said. "Now it's our moment. It's our time."

Before the podium celebration, Girmay went over and greeted Eritrean fans waving their country's green, red and blue flag.

"There is a whole continent that has been waiting for this," said Aike Visbeek, the performance director for Girmay's Intermarche-Wanty team.

"It's been done now, and I hope it will open the floodgates for more riders from Africa. He's an ambassador in every way."

Meanwhile, Mark Cavendish's pursuit of a record-breaking 35th stage win was postponed by a crash ahead of him in the finale, and Olympic champion Richard Carapaz took the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar, making him the first Ecuadorean to lead cycling's biggest race.

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d'Italia to become the first black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour.

But Girmay's Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting hit in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

Also in 2022, Girmay became the first rider from a sub-Saharan country to win a single-day classic at the Gent-Wevelgem race.

Riders from only one other African country — South Africa — have won Tour stages: Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Four-time Tour champion Chris Froome was born and raised in Kenya but represented Britain.

The 231 kilometre leg from Piacenza to Turin — the longest stage of this Tour — provided the first chance for a mass sprint. There will be at least a handful of other opportunities for sprinters as the race prepares to cross back into France following the first four stages in Italy.

With time to start raising his arms before he crossed the line, Girmay finished just ahead of Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud De Lie.

Cavendish has been tied with Eddy Merckx on 34 wins for three years and put off retirement to try again this year to break the record.

Members of the Israel-Premier Tech team fell ahead of Cavendish, who crossed 113th but was given the same finishing time as Girmay as per rules that neutralise the times in case of crashes in the final five kilometres.

"I was just looking to stay up. I'm too little to see what's going on but I could hear it," Cavendish said.

"Someone skidded and I was just waiting for someone to hit from behind. Luckily they didn't and we kind of got through, but we were way off it and with 2.5K to go we were out of it. I don't think anybody was seriously hurt and that's the main thing."

Cavendish complimented Girmay, who won a reduced sprint.

"That's just massive. Cycling is massive in Eritrea. It's super good for him and for African cycling," Cavendish said. "He's a legend, isn't he?"

Pogacar dropped to second overall, with the same time as Carapaz.

Remco Evenepoel — the 2022 world champion and Spanish Vuelta winner — is third overall; and two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is fourth, both also with the same time as Carapaz.

Danish rider Casper Pedersen had to abandon the race after falling with 15 kilometres to go and breaking his collarbone.

The race crosses back into France on Tuesday during Stage 4, the first big mountain leg going up to Sestriere and over the Col du Galibier — one of the Tour's classic climbs — in the 140-kilometre route from Pinerolo to Valloire.

Pogacar, who won the Tour in 2020 and 2021, and Vingegaard will be favoured to take the yellow jersey from Carapaz, who won the Giro in 2019 before taking gold in Tokyo three years ago.

"Tomorrow will be a big day," Carapaz said. "It will be complicated. I'm going to try and give everything. I'm going to try and enjoy every single moment in the yellow jersey."
