Dodge Journey Problems: 8 Common Issues (Explained)

' src=

The most common problems and possible solutions are listed below.

Table of Contents

Remote Keyless Entry System Works Intermittently

If your remote keyless entry system starts acting weird and only working sometimes, you might get frustrated.

It’s a huge inconvenience not to have technology work the way you expect it to. But, there’s an easy fix for the problem.

2010 dodge journey loss of power

Probable Causes and Solutions

The most common reason your Dodge Journey remote keyless entry system may begin working intermittently is because there is a problem with the component’s software .

Usually, updating the software will correct the problem.

If you upgrade the software and continue to have problems with the remote keyless ignition system, you should visit a Dodge dealership and have the problem diagnosed.

If the problem isn’t related to a software update, it could be an issue with the keyfob itself. If the keyfob has gone bad, it might be necessary to replace the keyfob.

A Dodge-certified technician can also upgrade the software for you.

Unexplained Dampness Inside a Dodge Journey

If you enter your vehicle and notice unexplained dampness, it could create an uncomfortable ride and be upsetting. Afterall, water isn’t supposed to leak inside a vehicle.

But unexplained dampness inside the vehicle of the Journey is a common problem, and is easily fixed.

Most often, especially in models 2009 to 2018, unexplained dampness in the interior of the Journey is from a water leak .

2010 dodge journey loss of power

Improperly sealed body seams can let water into the vehicle and create dampness.

If this is the reason your Journey is getting wet inside, the problem can be fixed by having the seals replaced and properly installed.

Engine Overheating Due to Coolant Flow Problem

If your Dodge Journey was made between 2009 and 2018, you may have issues with your engine overheating. It seems the problem can occur at anytime during the Journey’s existence.

Vehicles with as low as 20,000 miles have experienced this issue as well as Journeys with well over 100,000 miles too.

Usually, it needs diagnosed by a Dodge mechanic. But, there are easy solutions to prevent this problem from happening again.

If you have debris in your engine, it could cause a coolant flow issue.

If there’s a disruption in your coolant flow, the engine could overheat.

If not corrected, an engine overheating could cause serious damage to the engine. When debris blocks the cylinder head at the coolant port of the thermostat housing, the right amount of coolant won’t reach the engine.

2010 dodge journey loss of power

Removing the debris from the engine and especially around this port fixes the problem.

Check Engine Light with Diagnostic Code P0339

If your check engine light comes on, it’s a good idea to have a diagnostic test to determine what the cause of the warning is.

If you get a P0339 code, there is probably a problem with the vehicle’s crankshaft position sensor.

This issue is most common with 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2016 Dodge Journeys. Also, check our list of typical reasons the check engine light appears .

The crankshaft position sensor check engine light code will cause intermittent loss of power to this component.

To correct this problem, a technician may be able to add a shim to the crankshaft sensor .

If this does not correct the problem, it might be necessary to replace the sensor and flex plate.

Inaccurate Speed Settings and/or Excessive RPMs

If you notice your Journey is revving high or showing that you’re driving excessively, you might have a problem with the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM).

This is even more likely if you notice the problem when using cruise control.

Thankfully, inaccurate speed settings and unusually high RPMs can be related to an issue with the Journey’s software.

In most cases, updating the software for the powertrain control module (PCM) will correct the problem.

Updating the software can be done at a Dodge dealership.

Dodge Journey Seats Showing Signs of Corrosion

Dodge Journey 2009, 2010, and 2013 Journeys may show signs of wear, specifically around the seat frames.

If you notice rust around the vehicle’s seat frames, it’s important not to ignore the problem.

Instead, you should take the vehicle to a Dodge dealership to have corrosion inhibitor in the affected areas. There are also revised covers for the second row available to help prevent the issue from progressing.

Rough Idle after Cold Start on Dodge Journey with V6 Engines

2009 and 2010 Dodge Journey drivers have reported rough idling after a cold start .

The problem usually only occurs with Journeys equipped with a V6 engine.

Sometimes when this happens, a check engine light will come on. Diagnostic testing will show code P050D.

If your vehicle is showing a P050D diagnostic code, the rough idling after a cold start could be due to a problem with the powertrain control module (PCM).

After a mechanic diagnoses the problem, they can tell you whether a software upgrade will correct the issue, or if a replacement part is needed.

Dodge Journey is Stuck in Park

There’s nothing more frustrating then getting in your vehicle and realizing it won’t start. If your Journey is stuck in park, you will need to see a technician to have the problem corrected.

Dodge is aware of this problem and has issued a recall to correct the issue.

A Journey shifter getting stuck in park is likely due to the material used to create the shifter .

Making an appointment at a Dodge dealership will give technicians the opportunity to replace the parts and ensure you’re vehicle shifts every time you need it too.

Dodge Journey Brakes Wearing Out Prematurely

Some people go through brake pads faster than others, but if you drive a Dodge Journey, it might not be your fault. When the car manufacturer created the 2009 and 2010 Journeys, they did so with the best SUV technology and developed a crossover vehicle that was pleasurable to drive.

But they added brakes that were more suitable to a sedan.

The sedan brakes created a need for new brakes at just about 12,000 miles.

Dodge drivers filed a class-action lawsuit that extended the warranty of the vehicle’s brakes by three years.

If you notice your brakes have worn out quickly on your Journey, it’s a good idea to have them checked out.

Of course, it’s also important to have the parts replaced as needed to ensure the vehicle is safe to drive.

Dodge journey history, the best dodge journey model years, dodge journey model years to avoid.

The Dodge Journey is a midsize SUV that was last on sale for the 2020 model year. It offered buyers an American-badged alternative to European three-row rivals, and did so at a lower price than most of them. Although outclassed in many respects by fresher rivals, the most recent Dodge Journey to be sold here is now even cheaper, considering it's a few years old. For many, the value proposition is more important than anything else. To make your used Dodge Journey buying experience easier, we've put together a list of the best and worst model years for this crossover, based on reliability. Primarily, we focused on the number of customer complaints to separate the good model years from the bad ones.

2020 Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey was introduced for the 2009 model year as an all-new model to Dodge’s lineup. It was Dodge's answer to rivals in the midsize crossover SUV segment, such as the Chevrolet Equinox or Nissan Rogue. Dodge Journeys can seat five or seven people, depending on the model chosen. Engine choices for the US market included a 2.4-liter 'World' four-cylinder engine and a 3.5L Chrysler-sourced V6 engine - which was eventually replaced by the Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine for models made between the 2011 to 2019 model years. Most were equipped with either a four- or six-speed automatic transmission, with the option for either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations.

Throughout its entire production run, the Dodge Journey experienced one midlife update for the 2011 model year, which included a minor update to the front exterior styling. The Dodge Journey model range was also updated one final time for the 2020 model year before the model was completely retired from Dodge's product lineup altogether.

At the time of this article's writing, Dodge has not announced a replacement for the Journey in the US market, although the Dodge Hornet, serving as the brand's compact crossover SUV model, offers comparable and similar qualities found in the Journey; though it comes with less cargo capacity and is smaller. Outside of the US, the Journey nameplate has also been revived for use in a collaboration between Stellantis and Chinese car brand, GAC Group . This iteration of the Dodge Journey is merely a rebadged variant of GAC's Trumpchi GS5 SUV.

In addition to the United States, the Dodge Journey was also sold under Stellantis's Fiat brand, as the Fiat Freemont - in select markets abroad.

What are the best used cars for those who want something sporty?

Used cars are a great option if you're on a budget, even if you're looking for something sporty. If you're looking for a reliable car, then there are some brands with a fantastic reputation. Seek out a Toyota or Honda as they generally do well and offer such icons as Supra and the Civic Type R. American and German brands seem to be more contentious. Which cars to you think are best if you're going used?

We've consulted reputable online sources , such as Car Complaints and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), to gauge which Dodge Journey model years are the most and least troublesome. The NHTSA provides the most comprehensive record of customer complaints, but it is also valuable to consult recall information and other sources to pick up any patterns.

If you are in the market for a Dodge Journey, as with any used car - it is highly recommended to do as much due diligence and research within your means to check that the one you are looking to purchase is relatively trouble-free, or has had any crucial recall work performed (with relevant documentation). This could also extend to having a pre-purchase inspection performed by an entrusted service technician or mechanic, so you know as many details about its current condition.

From reviewing data recorded and made available, these model years of the Dodge Journey should be the least problematic.

The most reliable Dodge Journey reported by owners are those made for the 2020 model year. On the NHTSA, only 17 complaints are listed for this Journey model year, and there are no recalls. These were some of the last examples to leave the production line before the model was removed completely from the Dodge lineup. Ideally, the majority of the common issues or faults reported would have been rectified by Dodge among late models. That does not mean 2020 Journeys are completely fault-free. NHTSA does report some minor complaints involving in-car electrical equipment - items such as the reversing camera not displaying correctly, to the UConnect infotainment system's Bluetooth function connecting intermittently with connected devices. It must also be noted that even the 2020 Journey was criticized for the use of low-quality materials in the cabin. However, this does not technically impact its reliability.

Best Ford Explorer Model Years For Reliability

What are the best model years for Ford’s popular three-row SUV?

2019 Dodge Journey

2019 Dodge Journey models also have a low number of complaints across all other model years. There were also no recalls for this model year. NHTSA does record 39 complaints from owners - ranging from intermittent in-car equipment issues affecting the rearview camera display not working properly, to the automatic transmission shifting roughly or vibrating abnormally. There were also some problems with the second-row seat mechanisms. For this model year, Dodge discontinued the SXT trim level and added some more features for the SE.

2018 Dodge Journey

If you haven't noticed yet, there is a clear pattern developing: the newer the Dodge Journey, the fewer issues. This makes sense since the crossover was only offered in the USA for a single generation, so Dodge had time to iron out issues the longer it was on sale. This model has more complaints (145) than the 2019-2020 models, but that's still low compared to other Journeys. Car Complaints does cite some issues affecting loss of power when at speed and the UConnect's Bluetooth connectivity.

Six recalls were issued for AWD and FWD models made during this year - addressing a common fault reported with the reversing camera display not working when reverse gear was engaged, cruise control not being able to cancel with driver input, and exterior light issues.

Brands under the Stellantis umbrella (Dodge, Chrysler etc.) are no strangers to recalls and consumer complaints, and unfortunately, the Dodge Journey is no exception. Some of the most common Dodge Journey issues reported include:

  • Brake issues
  • Electrical problems
  • Interior accessory faults
  • Drivetrain issues

From the research gathered across all model years of the Dodge Journey, we have narrowed down which ones are the most troublesome. Taking center of attention is the 2009 Dodge Journey - the first iteration of the Dodge crossover SUV.

2009 Dodge Journey

The first Dodge Journey model year, 2009, has racked up the most complaints. Seeing as these were the very first to be sold new to buyers and are also the oldest running examples, it is no surprise that 2009 Journeys are the ones recommended staying away from. At the time of writing, the 2009 Journey has almost 1,600 complaints and eight recalls to its name.

Very early models have been reported to suffer problems surrounding premature brake and brake rotor wear, rough engine idle issues, various electrical issues, and loss of engine power, to name a few. Recalls also issued by Dodge for this model year include a fix to the driver's airbag wiring and power supply unit that could affect the deployment of the airbags in an accident, a fix to the engine wiring harness (that could pose a fire hazard), and a fix to the ignition switch that could potentially deactivate key safety systems if the ignition key physically moves into the 'OFF' or 'ACCESSORY' mode.

2010 Dodge Journey

2010 Dodge Journey models do not fare much better when it comes to long-term reliability and issues reported by owners. NHTSA data states up to 1,067 registered complaints and four recalls issued for this model year. Along with the premature brake wear and powertrain issues reported by owners of early model Journeys, 2010 models tend to suffer issues affecting a unique Dodge component - the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) fuse. Defective units can result in various issues, from the horn suddenly going off by surprise, causing side windows to raise or lower without warning, or most alarming, causing the central locking system to operate without any input from the keyfob.

2012 Dodge Journey

The number of issues faced by owners of the Dodge Journey decreased in the first few years, with the 2012 example registering 355 complaints, based on current NHTSA data. That's much better than the 2009 version, but it still isn't a trouble-free vehicle, with issues affecting the brake systems, premature brake rotor wear, and most prevalent for this model year, issues affecting the air conditioning and heating systems. Six recalls were also issued for 2012 Journey models - most notably one to prevent unintended deployment of the driver airbag, and a fix to ensure water entering the ABS module would not affect the operation of the vehicle stability systems. Additional recalls also aimed to fix issues that could cause the power steering return hose to rupture, causing unexpected loss of power steering.

In the following table, we can see the most complaints registered by Dodge Journey model years, based on current data from Car Complaints.

Summary: Avoid Early Dodge Journeys

Dodge Journey

Out of all the model years of the Dodge Journey, the early models are the ones to avoid. The majority of trouble-prone Journeys tend to be 2009 models. 2009 Journeys have the highest number of owner complaints. They were the most affected by the commonly reported brake and powertrain issues, and also received many recalls.

If you are looking for a used Dodge Journey with less chance of running into potential issues, our advice is to aim for a later model produced towards the end of the Journey's production run. Ideally, aim for one made between the 2019 to 2020 model years, as these were reported with little to no recalls issued at all, as well as the least number of complaints from owners. The Dodge Journey may not be as reliable as Japanese or Korean midsize SUVs, but for any family needing an affordable, practical option, the Journey fits these criteria. As with any used car, we advise shopping around and doing as much due diligence as possible to increase your chances of finding one that is less likely to run into trouble.

Dodge Journey:  Reduced Engine Power Diagnosis

One of the most annoying things that can happen when we are driving our vehicles is when we get the reduced engine power light.  Most of the time, reduced engine power doesn’t make commuting home possible since the max speed your Dodge Journey will reach is not going to be enough to keep you safe on the highway.

If your Journey has gotten this reduced engine power warning, it means that one of its engine management sensors or the ECU have gone bad. It’s effectively “in the dark” without enough vital telemetry to control the engine properly.  Without enough data, the ECU will just give you enough power to not leave you totally stranded, and may run the engine in an entirely different way.

Reduced Engine Power Light Dodge Journey

Reduced Engine Power Causes:  Dodge Journey

If you have the reduced engine power light, then there are going to be some diagnostic trouble codes stored in your OBD II system.  This is great news, since it helps narrow down where the ECU thinks that the problem is.  A good code scanner is really cheap and can make the process a whole lot smoother.

Here are some of the most typical problems that can make your Journey’s reduced engine power warning come on:

Throttle Body

This is one of the most common reasons the reduced engine power light comes on.  If the ECU isn’t getting the proper voltage response from the throttle body, it can’t be sure of how much it’ll really accelerate your Journey from the gas pedal input.

At this point, it turns on the reduced engine power mode in order to keep the vehicle from running away from you.

Your Journey’s oxygen sensors measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust to help insure that the proper air/fuel mixture is realized.  If they totally go bad they usually don’t trigger the reduced engine power mode, but if you plug your code scanner and it comes up with an oxygen sensor related code such as  P0160 , it’s definitely worth taking a look at them.  While they don’t often na

Dodge Journey: Reduced Engine Power Warning Causes

Throttle Position Sensor

The throttle position sensor is one of the most vital sensors in your Journey.  If it’s not responding, the ECU has no way of telling how much gas gas you’ve given it.  The TPS data also helps determine when the transmission will shift.

Another common cause of a reduced power condition is , if the ECU goes bad it can trigger the reduced engine power condition.  It is responsible for taking the data from all of the sensors above, and combining it with the data from many other sensors to control the engine.

Should You Drive Your Journey with the Reduced Power Light

The idea behind the reduced engine power condition is to allow you to limp your Journey into the shop or back home.  It is not meant to sustain long periods of vehicular operation.  Not being able to go 40MPH (which is almost always the case) is a safety risk.

When the engine power has been reduced, the engine and transmission can operate in totally different ways.  This leads to jerky shifts, unstable acceleration, and horrible gas mileage.

Good luck diagnosing your Journey’s reduced engine power light.  If there is anything that you would like to add, please feel free to leave a comment below.

No power, full battery

Battery is fully charged and measures 12.56V across the battery posts. Measuring across the exposed terminals (the battery is down in the fender and not up top where most vehicles have them, and in lieu of that there is a positive terminal placed up top) shows only 2 - 3V. The vehicle appears to be completely dead. Absolutely no lights/sounds. Cannot even attempt to start it. If boosted the car starts right up and runs, as long as the cables remain connected. Once removed the car sputters and dies out unless the gas pedal is depressed. The car will run at a higher ram but it still flickers and a relay can be heard clicking back and forth. Where do I begin to troubleshoot?

So you got at the battery to test at it's posts....

Loss of voltage by the time it takes to get to the engine bay jumper posts would indicate resistance(dirty/corrosion) of cable connections or cables themselves as they are not the "heaviest" gage wires of cars of older times. Get back in there and clean the posts and cable clamps. Use a light coating of dielectric grease on reassembly.

All clean. I disconnected the cables to the jumper post and cleaned it before measuring. The battery cable at the jumper post is still 12V+ when disconnected, but when connected to the jumper post and everything else only measures 3V ish.

check the NEGATIVE jumper on the strut tower, it's multiple wires  and common for resistance from "tarnishing to develope there.

Even grinding off paint around the grounds to bare metal, then a light coat of dielectric grease can help.

Salt belt cars have more issues with this. On copper connection, clean means shiny bare metal.

Scratch the point of meter probes on surface of remote contacts under hood. If functioning right there is a small loss from top battery post, approx 0.3 volts, not 9.

Load test battery in car as well. Need at least 300 cranking amps to properly start, 12.5 volts only useful with amperage as well.

(  If boosted the car starts right up and runs, as long as the cables remain connected. Once removed the car sputters and dies out unless the gas pedal is depressed. The car will run at a higher ram but it still flickers and a relay can be heard clicking back and forth)................Sounds like the ALTERNATOR is BAD as it wont keep car supplied with juice once going and car will run if jumped, so sounds like the BATTERY is BAD.........doesn't matter what the battery reads if it is not enough power to crank the starter.

Sparhawk1995

I just started having this exact same problem on a 2017 Journey.  I have put 2 brand new duralast batteries (I had them checked at the store before I left) AND a new alternator in the vehicle.  Cable coming up from the battery disconnected from fuse block reads 12.4V.. as soon as I connect to the fuse block, voltage reading drops to 3V.

Any help would be appreciated.  I am at wits end trying to figure this problem out.

I think there is an IBS sensor on the cable that can go bad also its down on the battery end of the clamps

Dodge Journey Acceleration Problem [Simple Fix]

Dodge Journey Acceleration Problem

Manufacturers will set the throttle response low due to regulations. This means that when you step on the gas pedal, there is a slight delay before the car actually starts to move. This is known as the "dead pedal" or "sponge pedal"!

The main concern here is when merging into traffic onto a highway or making a quick maneuver. There are some things you can do to help fix this issue.

One easy fix is to adjust the throttle response by installing a device called a throttle response controller. A throttle response controller amplifies the electrical signal to the ECU so that you get a much faster response from the engine. You can control the sensitivity from a smartphone or a remote, which helps get the perfect setting.

Our engineering team is recommending ShiftPower Throttle Response Controller at this time.

Common Acceleration Problems in Dodge:

  • Manufacture settings
  • Throttle body issues
  • Mass airflow sensor issues
  • Catalytic converter issues
  • Exhaust leaks
  • Intake leaks
  • Ignition system problems
  • Fuel delivery issues
  • Bad motor mount
  • Vacuum leak
  • Stiff steering wheel

Check engine light

When your check engine light or warning light comes on, it's telling you there is a problem with your vehicle.

Common reasons:

- ECU issues

- Throttle body issues

- Mass airflow sensor issues

- Catalytic converter issues

- Incorrectly gapped spark plug

- Cruise control issue

- Throttle Control Light issue

Dodge journey Acceleration Solved

If you don't have any mechanical or computer issues then we recommend you try a throttle response controller or a professional tune. For the cost, we have found that a throttle response controller is the least expensive that provides immediate results.

A throttle response controller is a device that modifies the signal between the pedal and the engine's computer. It "fools" the computer into thinking the pedal is being pressed further than it actually is which in turn tells the engine to provide more power. The results are an acceleration that feels smoother and more linear.

There are a few different types of throttle response controllers on the market, but we recommend the ShiftPower Throttle Response Controller. ShiftPower offers a 3-year warranty.

Throttle Position Sensor

A throttle position sensor (TPS) is a sensor used to monitor the position of the throttle in an internal combustion engine. The sensor is usually located on the throttle body.

The TPS is used to monitor the position of the throttle butterfly valve. The sensor produces a voltage that is proportional to the position of the throttle valve. The TPS is an important sensor because it tells the engine control unit (ECU) how far open the throttle is.

The TPS is a potentiometer that produces a varying voltage depending on the position of the throttle. The TPS is connected to the throttle shaft, and the position of the throttle shaft is proportional to the position of the throttle plate. When the throttle is closed, the TPS produces a voltage of 0.5 volts. As the throttle is opened, the TPS produces a higher voltage. When the throttle is fully open, the TPS produces a voltage of 4.5 volts.

The ECU uses the TPS signal to determine how much fuel to inject into the engine. The TPS signal is also used to calculate the engine load. The engine load is a measure of how much work the engine is doing. The engine load is used to calculate the ignition timing.

If the TPS is not working properly, it can cause a number of problems. If the TPS produces a voltage that is too low, it will cause the engine to run lean. This can lead to engine damage. If the TPS produces a voltage that is too high, it will cause the engine to run rich. This can lead to increased fuel consumption and emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions Dodge Journey Acceleration

Why is my dodge journey sluggish.

There are a few things that can cause your Dodge Journey to feel sluggish. It might be low on transmission fluid, have a dirty air filter, or need a new oxygen sensor.

The first thing you should check is the transmission fluid level. If it's low, topping it off might improve your car's performance.

A dirty air filter can also make your car feel sluggish. If your air filter is dirty, replace it with a new one.

Finally, a faulty oxygen sensor can cause your car to run poorly. If your oxygen sensor is faulty, replace it with a new one.

Why is my Dodge Journey lagging?

There are a few reasons why your Dodge Journey might be lagging. It could be an issue with the spark plugs, the fuel injectors, the air filter, or the oxygen sensor. If you're experiencing acceleration problems, it's best to take your car to a mechanic so they can scan for trouble codes and diagnose the issue. Once they know what's wrong, they can fix it and get your car running properly again.

What is throttle lag?

A throttle lag is when there's a delay between the time you press the accelerator pedal and when the car actually starts to move. This can be extremely frustrating, especially when you're trying to merge onto a highway or make a quick pass. There are a few things that can cause throttle lag, and luckily, there are also a few ways to fix it.

  • Bad Fuel Filter - A clogged fuel filter can cause all sorts of engine performance issues, including throttle lag. The fix is to simply replace the fuel filter according to your car's maintenance schedule.
  • Dirty Mass Air Flow Sensor - The mass air flow sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of air entering the engine. If it's dirty, it can cause a delay in the amount of air reaching the engine, which will cause throttle lag.
  • Ignition Coil or Coil Packs - The ignition coil or coil pack is responsible for providing the spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture in the engine. If it's failing, it can cause a delay in the spark, which will cause throttle lag.
  • Cracked Air Intake Hose - An air intake hose that's cracked or broken can cause a loss of air pressure, which will cause throttle lag.
  • Bad Spark Plugs - Worn-out spark plugs can cause a delay in the spark, which will cause throttle lag. Same issue with spark plug wires that are worn out or have too much resistance.

If you're experiencing throttle lag, there are a few things you can do to fix it. Check the fuel filter and mass air flow sensor, and make sure they're clean or replaced if necessary. You should also check the ignition coil or coil pack, and replace it if necessary. The same thing with spark plugs, replace them with new ones. Finally, check the air intake hose for any cracks or breaks, and replace it if necessary. By following these steps, you should be able to fix throttle lag and get your car running smoothly again.

How can I make my Dodge Journey faster?

There are a few things you can do to make your Dodge Journey faster. You can improve the aerodynamics of your car by adding a rear spoiler or a front air dam. You can also improve the performance of your car by upgrading the engine to a higher-performance model. You can also add a cold air intake or a performance exhaust system to improve the airflow to the engine.

Finally, the easiest and most inexpensive way to make your Dodge Journey faster is to install a throttle response controller. This will improve the throttle response of your car and make it feel more responsive to your inputs

Fuel Injectors

One of the most common causes of an  acceleration problem in a Dodge Journey is a clogged or dirty fuel injector. Fuel injectors spray fuel into the engine, and over time they can become clogged with deposits. This can cause the injector to spray less fuel, or not spray any fuel at all, which will cause the engine to run lean and eventually stall. If you think your Journey may have a clogged injector, have it checked by a mechanic.

Trouble Codes

A trouble code is a code thrown out by an automotive diagnostic tool when it detects an issue within the vehicle. These codes are used by automobile manufacturers to diagnose and repair issues within the vehicle. Dodge journey owners may come across a wide variety of trouble codes, some of which may indicate serious problems.

One sample of trouble code that may be thrown by the Dodge Journey is the P0456 trouble code. This code indicates that there is a small leak in the evaporative emission control system.

Other codes that may be thrown by the Dodge Journey include P0128, which indicates that the coolant thermostat is not functioning properly, and P0300, which indicates that the engine is misfiring.

If either of these codes is thrown, it is important to have the vehicle diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible. Continuing to drive a vehicle with either of these codes may cause further damage to the engine or other systems.

No detailed data available.

Consumer Reports obtains its reliability data from a questionnaire that is sent to subscribers. In the questionnaire, we ask subscribers to note any problems with their cars that occurred in the past 12 months. They are asked to identify problems that they considered serious (because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime).

A typical model has about 200 to 400 samples for each model year. For some model years, typically those of older or less popular cars, we do not have a large enough sample size to provide results of statistical confidence.

There are several ways in which a savvy car buyer can still research the quality of a car.

I believe this is tied in with a faulty Total Integrated Power Module issue. Suddenly and simultaneosly the turn signals, power windows, power locks and radio would not function. Not until I shut down the vehicle, wait a few minutes and then restart the vehicle would everything operate normally again. I have had to pull out of heavy traffic and off busy highways without turn signals putting myself and my family in danger.

We were on the highway, 11/27/2011, when we lost power inside the car. It still ran and the headlights worked but everything else shut down. We pulled over and turned the car off and back on and the power returned. Took it to the dealer and they reset or updated the computer system. Didn't work. A month later, 12/24/11, it happened again on the highway at 33400 miles. Back to the dealer we go. Not the first time we've had problems with this car. Bought it used in June 2011 and have been into the dealer about 6 times for different issues, once for 2 weeks. Any suggestions??

Dodge Journey won’t start – causes and how to fix it

Dodge Journey is a reliable road companion, but its a machine with hundreds of interconnected parts, and like any other machine it sometimes fail to deliver normal operation. In this article we go through most common causes of Journey breakdown and how you can fix the problem.

2010 dodge journey loss of power

The most common causes that hinders normal starting operation of your Journey are dead 12v battery, corrosion on battery terminals, and dead key fob battery. However, bad alternator, clogged fuel filter, broken starter, blown fuse, empty gas tank, immobilizer error, or any fault in the electrical system can also cause your vehicle not to start.

1. Weak Battery

If your Journey’s engine won’t crank or cranks very slowly, then the most likely culprit is weak or dead 12v battery. Investigating more closely and doing a battery voltage test will clarify whether the starting problem is due to the battery. A test can be done to measure the voltage between the battery poles, check the acid level and assess the condition of the starter battery.

If a new car battery has been installed, the battery may not have yet reached its full capacity. There is nothing to worry about. A new battery only develops its full capacity over time.

Test 12v battery

The voltage of the battery on your Dodge Journey can be measured precisely with a multimeter. Before the test, the multimeter is set to the voltage range of the battery and connected to its plus and minus poles. Successful testing of the car battery, i.e. checking the voltage, usually results in values of approx. 12 to 13 volts. Values above 14 or below 11.5 volts require an expert assessment of the condition of the car battery. Because the battery may have a defect with these measured values and must be replaced.

Jump start Dodge Journey

If dead battery is the reason for the breakdown of your Journey, you can easily jump start it using jumper cables and a healthy battery from another vehicle, or using a battery booster if available.

First connect red cable to the positive terminal of your Journey’s dead battery, then to the positive terminal of donor battery. Next connect black cable to the negative terminal of donor battery, then to the bare metal in the engine bay of your Journey. Start the donor vehicle and then your Journey. Remove the cables in reverse order.

2. Corrosion on battery

Corrosion on the contacts of your car battery leads to loss of contact and reduced current flow, which means that your engine can no longer start properly.

To know if your Journey’s starting problems are from dirty battery contacts, you need to investigate them. If you lift the rubber covers over the two battery terminals, you can check the terminals for corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you do not have to replace the battery, just clean it.

Clean battery corrosion

To clean the battery on your Dodge Journey, you have to remove the pole cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative pole. If the pole clamp is very tight, you can open it with pliers. We advise against using metal pliers, but if you use them, you must make sure that you do not touch any other parts of the body. Next you can unplug the red positive pole cable. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery. After cleaning, reconnect the terminals.

3. Weak key fob battery

If your Journey has push start/stop button, then its possible that your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle – the battery is only used to send the signal for locking/unlocking. If the key fob battery is empty, the door no longer locks or unlocks at the push of a button. The doors must then be opened manually. The immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

How to start Dodge Journey with dead key fob battery

If you have a model of Journey which only has a key fob with start/stop button and no place to insert a key, then try placing your key fob as close to the start/stop button as you can and then start the vehicle.

2010 dodge journey loss of power

Tip: You can try starting your Journey with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

4. Broken starter motor

A starter is a motor for starting the engine of your Journey. The average life of a starter motor is about 100,000 to 150,000 miles, and the life will be shortened if the engine is started more frequently. In any case, since the starter motor also has a limited life, it will break down after using the car for a long time, and if the starter motor breaks down, the engine will not start.

Symptom: When you turn the key to start the engine of your Journey, you will hear a clicking sound, which is the sound of a bad starter motor. And if the starter motor does not work with a healthy battery, suspect a malfunction of the starter.

If the starter fails, it usually needs to be replaced with a new one.

Temporary fix for starter

If the engine does not start due to the starter, the engine may start if you turn the key while hitting the starter motor with something like a stick or metal tool. This workaround is effective when the parts inside the starter are stuck together or the gears are slightly out of alignment.

However, it is possible that the starter is nearing the end of its life, so it is recommended that you have it inspected at a dealer or maintenance shop.

5. Defective alternator

An alternator is a generator that produces electricity. If your Journey’s alternator fails, it will not be able to produce electricity and the battery will not be able to charge. Therefore, even if you think that the cause of the engine not starting is a battery failure and replace the battery, the battery will soon run out and the engine will not start.

Alternators rarely break down. In particular, modern cars have improved performance, so it is said that they will last 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Still, it can break down depending on how you use it, and in the case of a used car, the alternator may be quite old. Don’t let your guard down.

If the alternator breaks down, it must be replaced with a new alternator.

6. Clogged fuel filter

The fuel filter of your Journey does not wear out like a mechanical part, but it gets clogged by dirt and airborne particles and clogs over time. The permeability of the filter drops, and so does the fuel pressure. To a certain extent this doesn’t matter, but if the fuel filter is too dirty, the engine will no longer perform at full capacity and in some instance may not start at all. Cleaning is not possible, you can only change the filter.

7. Fuel pump failure

If your Journey’s fuel pump fails, then the engine won’t start. The pump normally ensures that the necessary amount of fuel is passed from the tank to the injection system of the engine with sufficient pressure.

Before your fuel pump stops working, it usually becomes noticeable: if your car’s engine breaks down from time to time, the car is difficult to start, the engine jerks a little or the engine performance drops, you should have your pump checked.

Wear or contamination of the pump can be the reason for this. If the pump is leaking, a power contact is broken, a line or a pump lever is broken, the fuel pump is usually also noticeable before failure. You can have a defective fuel pump replaced in your workshop.

8. Blown fuse

In rare cases, a blown fuse could also be the culprit in the breakdown of your Journey. Check all fuses in the fuse box essential for starting the engine. But, be careful when lending a hand yourself to the fuse box! The box is under power and repairs or tests should always be done in a workshop.

9. Defective spark plugs

Without functioning spark plugs, the engine will not start. The spark plugs themselves are often not affected by a defect. Instead, plug connections on the ignition system come loose. If only one plug is actually loose, you can fix the problem yourself on site. If a spark plug has failed, it must be replaced in the workshop.

10. Rodent damage

Rodent damage can be another reason why your Dodge Journey won’t start. The animals crawl under the vehicle and bite through cables and wires. In principle, this can affect all vehicle systems such as the fuel supply, the oil supply or the power supply.

The rodent damage can usually be seen quickly by looking into the engine compartment. The damage caused by the rodent bite can be repaired in the workshop. Be prepared for relatively high costs here.

11. Engine failure

Although very rare, but it can also be the cause of the breakdown of your Journey. If a vehicle has an engine failure, then nothing works anymore. It is not uncommon for the driver of a vehicle to be responsible for such damage. Typical causes include tearing of the timing belt, incorrect fueling, insufficient oil, hydrolock, overheating of the engine, or continuous driving in an excessive speed range.

2010 dodge journey loss of power

Only an experienced mechanic can diagnose engine failure in a workshop.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Dodge Journey is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Journey. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the wire connected, you should turn the ignition on. But be careful not to start the engine. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be falsified. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and model, you usually also have to type in the engine and vehicle ID number. For exact troubleshooting, always check whether the information is correct.

There are many reasons why your Journey may not start. When looking for the trigger, you should always start with the most obvious cause, the empty battery.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to call a breakdown service or a workshop. In the event of a defect, the latter can directly initiate the repair.

My 2017 Dodge Journey ran fine in the morning yesterday, was totally dead last night – no locks, no dash lights, no power button. Long story short – disconnected + positive cable under hood to reset computer. Put cables back on after 10 min wait – got feeble spark while attaching wires. Entered car, found 4-way flashers indicating on dash. Button was accidentally depressed after morning drive. Charged battery for 1 hour with battery charger. Started fine, but needed to be driven extensively to fully charge 69-month old battery. Buying new battery tomorrow.
