Built almost 2,000 years ago using the spoils of war in Jerusalem, the Colosseum’s official name is actually Flavian Amphitheater— named after the Flavian dynasty of Emperors who ordered its construction. The ancient arena once held up to 85,000 spectators and hosted bloody gladiator battles, wild animal hunts, public executions, and was even filled with water for a mock sea battle on at least one occasion! Admission to the Colosseum includes entry to Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, among the world's most significant archeological sites. The structures are right in Rome's center and easy to get to. Most of our tours include all the archeological sites at varied durations, but three hours on average. If the word "tour" is in the title then it definitely includes an English-speaking Colosseum guide. The Colosseum Underground tour is perfect for anyone who wants to do the most exclusive product, but be prepared to jump through some hoops. Tickets are difficult to come by so all visitors are asked to leave the purchase date of the tour open in case of a time change. The Arena floor is the second most exclusive product which visits the same stage the gladiators fought on. Finally, our Privileged Entrance Colosseum tour is our most affordable tour and a great value! It's easy to find our meeting points, and you'll always find an attendant with a sign reading "The Tour Guy" or "The Roman Guy" on it. Our Welcome Staff are friendly and will improve your overall experience. Our guides are knowledgeable and passionate about what they do which shows in the reviews. With special access and our expert guides, you can get more from your Colosseum tour. Explore underground tunnels, walk through the Gladiator’s Gate onto the battle floor, or take in the beauty of the Colosseum under lights on a night tour. Just choose your ideal Colosseum tour and leave the rest to us!

Rome is busy in the summer, which can be a challenge for visitors. Our Colosseum tours include skip-the-line entry which gives you a break from crowds. We also offer special access to areas like the underground and the arena floor. All tours include admission tickets to the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum. The 5 best rome colosseum tours with skip-the-line access.

Gladiators battled on the arena floor. A good guide will help you battle the crowds.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit is worth it, though, if you want to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – and try to imagine what it would have been like 2,000 years ago.

A standard ticket to the Colosseum also includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so many (but not all) tours also include those ancient sites. Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at. A good guide will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring these incredible places to life. Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the underground hypogeum, you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

Crown Tours: Skip the line Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour

Panoramic aerial view of the ruins of ancient Rome at the Roman Forum from Palatine Hill.

Price: Adults from $84; kids from $67 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: Engaging guides speak several languages.

Selected by GetYourGuide as a Certified Experience, this group tour starts at the Colosseum, then takes you to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Groups consist of up to 30 people, and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow the guide. The tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi on the hill overlooking the Colosseum about 30 minutes before the official entry time to get everyone checked in and set up with headsets. The guide then leads participants into the Colosseum and up to the second level, where there's a chance to stop and take photos. On the way back down, there's another photo-op at the arena level before the guide leads the group over to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Crown Tours also offers guided tours of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, as well as the Borghese Gallery, Pantheon and other sites.

Local tip: This tour is offered over a variety of time slots every day. Pick one of the earlier time slots to make sure you'll finish up by lunchtime.

Through Eternity Tours: Ultimate Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

House of the Vestal Virgins at the Roman Forum.

Price: Adults from $105; kids from $95 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Palatine Hill, which some tours skip.

Recent visitors praise the knowledgeable guides for their passion about ancient history and keeping the tour moving while explaining everything in detail. This tour starts at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week and finishes up around lunchtime. In addition to the Colosseum, highlights include the Via Sacra and the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum, as well as the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine Hill.

This tour starts at 9:15 a.m. daily. Groups are limited to 10 people; if six or more people are taking the tour, the guide gives out headsets so everyone can hear. Participants are asked to meet 10 minutes before the start time in front of Cafe/Restaurant Angelino ai Fori on Largo Corrado Ricci. The tour is stroller-accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle, especially on hot days.

Through Eternity Tours offers a variety of group and private tours of Rome and other destinations, including Florence , Naples and Pompeii.

Local tip: Book a table at the nearby Taverna dei Fori Imperiali to enjoy a leisurely lunch after the tour.

LivTours: The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Interior of the Colosseum from The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access tour from LiveTours.

Courtesy of LivTours

Price: Adults from $163; kids from $145 Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: Virtual reality headsets show what the ancient sites would have looked like.

Recent tourgoers praise the guides on this tour for bringing the facts and stories about ancient Rome to life. Along with the confirmation email, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and the surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants noted that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Local tip: You can get some great photos from the upper level, especially if you stand at the apex of the oval.

Roma Experience: Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

View of the Colosseum exterior on a Roma Experience Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill.

Courtesy of Roma Experience

Price: From $531 Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes

Standout perk: See these ancient sites with an archaeologist who dug at the Roman Forum.

For a deeper understanding (no pun intended) of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, a tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can buy. She studied archaeology and has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other sites, so she's just the person to guide you if you want to get beyond the surface level. Her private tours range from just under three hours for a skip-the-line Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tour to the full-day "See Rome in One Day" tour, which also includes a guided visit of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum when you book.

Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.

Local tip: If you want to see another incredible archaeological park, let Bove take you to Ostia Antica, less than an hour from Rome.

Imago Artis Travel: Timeless Tales of Gods and Laymen of the Ancient Rome

View in between buildings of the Colosseum on an Imago Artis Travel Timeless Tales of Gods and Laymen of the Ancient Rome tours.

Courtesy of Imago Artis Travel

Price: On request Duration: 4 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Pantheon in addition to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Founded by three art historians with a passion for Roman art and history, Imago Artis Travel offers bespoke private tours of Rome and beyond. Imago Artis works closely with their clients to craft personalized itineraries that highlight the city's most incredible monuments and hidden gems. This tour lasts a half-day and includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Pantheon, with an optional stop for espresso, but you can customize the itinerary to do a full-day tour or multiday itinerary.

Other itineraries that include the Colosseum bring visitors to the Basilica of San Clemente, known as the "lasagna church" because it was built in layers: The deeper you descend, the further back in time you go. Imago Artis also grants visitors exclusive access to off-limits places, such as a church overlooking the Roman Forum. The company also organizes multiday itineraries throughout Italy.

Local tip: There's an element of surprise and delight with Imago Artis that's hard to find elsewhere, especially if your guide is Fulvio De Bonis, one of the company's founders.

Colosseum Highlights

Welcome to the Colosseum, one of the world’s most visited monuments! The Colosseum has been the iconic symbol of Rome since its construction was completed in 80 AD. This incredible amphitheater could seat upwards of 50,000 spectators and hosted famous gladiator battles. The facade has seen its share of pilfering and damage over the years but it is still remarkably beautiful even 2,000 years later.

Did you know that Colosseum tickets have been used at the monuments since its inauguration? Although the modern-day ticket looks much different to that of ancient times, the system used in ancient times when entering with Colosseums tickets is the same that is used in stadiums today. You can still see the roman numerals that are carved above the Colosseum entrances that directed spectators to their sections. It is believed that the Colosseum could be filled or emptied in a matter of minutes.

Millions of visitors line up to visit the Colosseum every year in order to immerse themselves in ancient history. This, of course, means that large crowds and long ticket lines are hard to avoid. Fortunately, special access and Colosseum skip the line tickets are available to savvy travelers who book their Colosseum guided tour online in advance.

There are various types of ticket/tour options available that will fit your unique needs. Whether it is a quick Colosseum audio guide tour before you depart Rome or an in-depth experience that explores the underground dungeons of the Colosseum, your perfect tour awaits.

Colosseum guided tours come in a variety of options like small groups or private experiences that include a visit to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. You can even book a Colosseum audio guide tour or Colosseum skip the line tickets if you would like to explore the area at your own pace.

  • Security has been increased and many sites will require visitors to pass through a metal detector and scan their belongings.
  • Do not bring large bags/luggage, this includes roller bags. Only small bags are allowed inside the Colosseum.
  • The Colosseum is wheelchair accessible. Not all Colosseum tours will follow a path that is wheelchair accessible so be sure to check the tour details. Private tours are the easiest option.

Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill Guided Tour Experience

Most Colosseum guided tour options have the added advantage of including entry to two more pillars of ancient Roman history - the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. These three sites are in close proximity to each other, making it possible to explore them all in a single tour.

  • Typically, your tour will start with the Colosseum. You'll bypass the long entry lines with your skip-the-line access and be led by your guide through the historical landmark, learning about its fascinating history and architecture.
  • After exploring the Colosseum, your guide will then lead the group to the Roman Forum, the political, commercial, and judicial center of ancient Rome.
  • You'll get to walk through the ancient streets, see the temples, and envision the bustling Roman life from centuries past. Lastly, the tour proceeds to Palatine Hill, where you can soak in the panoramic views of Rome.
  • At each site, while the guide will keep the group together for the main tour and explanation, there's usually some allocated time for independent exploration, where you can check out points of interest at your own pace, take pictures, or absorb the atmosphere.

The inside story

Gladiators tended to be criminals, prisoners of war or slaves who were trained to fight in professional schools. As their fame increased, some men even volunteered for the job. Trained gladiators would often fight unskilled criminals and slaves as a form of public execution, though winning a fight against a gladiator could earn a slave his freedom.

Archaeological remains show that gladiators were often overweight, perhaps in order to build a layer of protective fat. They tended to eat a vegetarian diet of fresh vegetables, dried fruit, barley and beans to grow strong bones that would heal quickly.

Gladiators would fight barefoot in pairs for around ten minutes while the audience chanted like modern football crowds. A common chant was "habet, hoc habet” (he’s had it!). A defeated gladiator would raise a finger (if he had any left) and might be pardoned by the games’ sponsor.

In 107AD, the emperor Trajan celebrated a victory with a show that included 5000 pairs of gladiators – the largest contest known to history.

About the Colosseum

This massive 50,000-capacity amphitheatre was inaugurated in 80AD with games that lasted 100 days and cost the lives of over 5000 animals. Entrance was free back then, though ‘tickets’ written on pieces of pottery were handed out with seat numbers, presumably to control numbers. The poor, and women, sat on the upper tiers, while senators and equestrians had seats closer to the action (protected from flying weapons and body parts by a net).

Entertainments varied. Some featured animal on animal, others were people fighting animals, and others were people fighting people – usually gladiators, but sometimes slaves/prisoners.

Gladiators probably did not fight to the death because they were valuable and popular commodities, though death was naturally an occupational hazard.

Today, the vast Colosseum easily swallows the thousands who visit, though it’s advisable to buy tickets in advance if you want to skip lines. There’s little to actually ‘do’ once inside other than look at the spectacle, though you can maximise your visit by booking special tickets with privileged access to the hypogeum or the upper levels. It’s also advisable to arrange a local or audio guide if Roman history isn’t your subject.

Tickets to the Colosseum often include access to the Forum and Palatine Hill and can be valid for two days, so it makes sense to plan your time wisely. Arrive early for the busiest places and enjoy the Palatine Hill at your leisure in the afternoon when the tourist hordes are elsewhere. Even with advance skip-the-line tickets and German-level planning, you may still discover that organisation at these venues is not entirely like clockwork, so be flexible.

Where is the Colosseum located?

The address of the Colosseum is Piazza del Colosseo, 1, in Rome, Italy . For those travelling by car, the Colosseum’s GPS coordinates are 41.8902° N, 12.4922° E . If you’re in Rome and want to find out how to go to the Colosseum use the following Google Map to find the best route from your current location.

How to get to the Colosseum

The Colosseum is very well serviced by Rome’s extensive public transport network. It can be reached by subway, multiple bus lines, and by tram. Below is a list of all public transport options to go to the Colosseum from practically anywhere in Rome.

  • Metro B line, get off at the Colosseum metro stop.
  • Metro A line, get off at Manzoni stop, then switch to the number 3 tram line going south.
  • Bus lines 60, 75, 85, 87, 271, 571, 175, 186, 810, 850, C3, and 117.
  • Tramway line 3.

If you don’t want to take public transport you can also take a taxi, just make sure that it is an official, licensed cab.

You’ll recognize them because they have the “TAXI” sign on the roof of the vehicle, are all white, and they have the Commune di Roma logo on the side.

Also make sure your cab has a meter, and that the driver turns it on when you get in, otherwise you could end up paying much more than you should.

Things to see near the Colosseum

The Colosseum is surrounded by other beautiful and famous monuments that are well worth viewing . The most important ones are:

  • The Arch of Constantine, a triumphalist arch dedicated to the Emperor of the same name. It sits right next to the Colosseum and doesn’t require a ticket.
  • The Domus Aurea , the remains of the grand palace emperor Nero built himself in 68 AD. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour (affiliate link if this is available?)
  • The Roman Circus, aka the Circus Maximus , the ground-level remains of an ancient chariot racing stadium. It is said that it could seat 150,000 spectators during the Empire’s heyday. It is best viewed from the Palatine Hill.
  • The Palatine Hill, which houses the archeological remains of many ancient Roman palaces and temples and offers a great view of the surrounding area. You can visit it with the same ticket as the Colosseum.
  • The Roman Forum, or Foro Romano , which used to be the center of Rome itself. A plaza where trade, politics, parades, and entertainment were conducted. You can visit and view its many archaeological remains with the same ticket as the Colosseum.

Tips and things you should know for your visit

Below are some tips and other important information you should take into account when visiting the Colosseum.

Like all major tourist attractions, the Colosseum’s security is quite stringent to keep visitors safe. Visitors are not allowed to enter the monument with large bags, suitcases, or backpacks.

If you are carrying your travel luggage you will be denied entry. Small and medium-sized bags are ok, but they will be screened by security personnel and go through a metal detector.

Italian military police, the Carabinieri, patrolling on horseback near the Colosseum

Skipping the line

If you have pre-booked your tickets you will get to skip the ticket line , but will still have to wait to go through security. Depending on the day and the time of year security can take anywhere from 10 minutes to over 60 minutes. Because of this, it is recommended you budget extra time for your visit.

A good way to avoid this problem altogether is to go early in the morning. The Colosseum opens to visitors at 8.30 am. If you arrive early you will spend much less time waiting and you will also avoid the intense heat of the Roman summer. Another way to skip the lines is to join a guided tour, find out more on our tours of the Colosseum page (link).

Is the Colosseum accessible for disabled people?

Yes, the Colosseum is accessible to disabled people. Its main entrance has no stairs, the inside is mostly flat save a few areas because of the old cobblestones, and there is an elevator that takes visitors to the upper floor.

Parking near the Colosseum

Regarding parking near the Colosseum — the most important advice for any visitor thinking of driving in Rome is don’t do it . Driving and finding parking spaces in the center of the city is very difficult if you don’t know your way around.

You’ll save money, time, and stress if you stick to public transport. Pickpockets can be a thing, but if you’re careful and mindful of your belongings you won’t have a problem.

Does the Colosseum have a dress code?

The Colosseum doesn’t have a dress code, but in exploring it you’ll be climbing a lot of stairs so make sure to wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes. The same can be said of Rome as a whole. Shorts, leggings, hoodies… all are fine.

If you explore the surrounding area you may also spend some time in the sun, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen.

Is the Colosseum child friendly?

Yes, but you’ll need to do a little extra planning. If you’re visiting during the hottest months of the year go early in the morning to escape the heat. Joining a guided tour can also help with dodging the lines to minimize waiting time. Beyond that, it depends on your child. If he/she is interested in ancient archaeological ruins and in hearing stories about brave Roman gladiators that fought in the arena the Colosseum can be quite an enjoyable experience.

What is the best way to see the Colosseum?

The best time to visit the Colosseum is early in the morning before large crowds form, and the best days are during the week, as it will usually be less crowded than on the weekends. However, if you’re willing to spend a little more, a night time tour (link) is probably the most interesting way to visit. Keep in mind that the night tour does not include a combined ticket for the Roman Forum and the palatine hill as a normal Colosseum ticket would, so if you want to see those monuments too you’ll have to visit them separately.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tours

FAQ | Frequently Asked Questions about Colosseum Tour

EVER WONDERED WHAT THE STRANGE HOLES ARE WITHIN THE WALLS OF THE COLOSSEUM?

Can i enter the inside of the colosseum.

You will need to purchase a ticket. Something many visitors are not aware of is that the Standard ticket only covers access to the standing tiers of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. You will need to purchase special tickets to gain more access to other parts of the Colosseum.

Is entry free?

Yes, it is available for free entry on the 1st Sunday of every month. Disabled visitors have free entry along with their EU guide.

What Is your recommendation of seeing the Colosseum the best way?

We strongly suggest that you book in advance as lines to enter the Colosseum can be very long, and in summer, it can get very hot and humid. As there is much to discover at the Colosseum, a Rome Colosseum Guided Tour would be the best option.

Is entry to the Roman Forum free?

The Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and the Colosseum now all form part of the standard ticket. The Roman Forum is part of your guided tour if you have selected a guided tour option.

How much time do I need to explore the Colosseum, and can I tour it on my own?

Without a guide – 1 hour aproximatively. With a guide – 1.5-3 hours depending on the tour you select. Yes, you are allowed to freely roam the Colosseum and soak in the beauty of the ancient ruins.

What are the best Colosseum visiting times?

To avoid the crowds and long waiting lines, it is suggested to enter the Colosseum as soon as it opens at 08.30 or an hour before the last entry. If possible, plan your trip mid-week to avoid the weekend crowds. November to February is considered low season, so it may be a good idea to plan your trip at the Colosseum at that time.

Am I allowed to bring a filled bottle of water into the Colosseum?

Only empty bottles are allowed in the Colosseum. There are many fountains located in the complex, and so you can fill your bottles once you have entered.

21 Best Colosseum Quotes to Inspire Your Next Roman Holiday!

The Colosseum is undoubtedly one of the most iconic symbols of Rome.

You can’t visit the Eternal City without being awed by the famous structure (especially if you take a tour inside this ancient gladiatorial arena like I did).

I’m not the only one impressed by the Colosseum’s grandeur.

There are many fantastic quotes about the Colosseum. Everyone from famous authors to comedians — and even film directors — has something to say about this architectural masterpiece.

I’ve rounded up all of the best Colosseum quotes for you.  They’re sure to have you planning your next trip to Rome!

Best Quotes about the Colosseum in Rome

Famous colosseum quotes.

Many Colosseum quotes are noteworthy due to the famous people that they are attributed to, from Lord Byron to Voltaire.

Some of the most famous quotes about the Colosseum tie together the importance of the Colosseum to Rome and likewise the importance of Rome to the rest of the world.

Let’s try to avoid the Fall of Rome, shall we?

“Rome will exist as long as the Coliseum does; when the Coliseum falls, so will Rome; when Rome falls, so will the world.” ~ Saint Venerable Bede

“The ancient Romans build their greatest masterpieces of architecture, their amphitheaters, for wild beasts to fight in.” – Voltaire

“When falls the Coliseum, Rome shall fall; And when Rome falls–the World.” ~ Lord Byron

“When in Rome, the past whispers in every corner, and the Colosseum stands as its loudest echo.” – Unknown  (This one is my favorite – so poetic!)

Funny quotes about the Colosseum

Now, there are more funny quotes about the Eiffel Tower than there are about the Colosseum.

But I managed to dig up a few to tickle your funny bone!

“In Rome, the emperor sat in a special part of the Colosseum called the Caesarian Section.” ~ George Carlin

“I’m not sure what it was like to walk into the Coliseum, but I bet it was something like this. The best place in the world to watch a sporting event.” ~ Wright Thompson

“The atmosphere here is a cross between the Munich Beer Festival and the Coliseum at Rome when the Christians were on the menu.” ~ Sid Waddell, English sportscaster

“It’s no accident that of all the monuments left of the Greco-Roman culture the biggest is the ballpark, the Colosseum, the Yankee Stadium of ancient times.” ~ Red Smith

“I have been to the pyramids of America. I have seen the cathedral of commerce. Our Parthenon, our Coliseum, our Chartres. I have been to the Mall of America, the world’s largest shopping mall.” ~ Molly Ivins

Inspirational Colosseum quotes

The Colosseum is one of the treasures of ancient Rome.  It is simply breathtaking, and it’s no wonder that every  sightseeing tour of Rome  will include a visit here.

A walk around Rome is like visiting an open-air art museum, with stunning ruins, churches, and fountains around every corner.

These quotes about the beauty of Rome and the Colosseum are certainly inspiring me to plan another trip to Italy!

“The Colosseum is not only a magnificent architectural wonder but also a testament to the glory and grandeur of the Roman Empire.” ~ Unknown

“Man’s history has been graven on the rock of Egypt, stamped on the brick of Assyria, enshrined in the marble of the Parthenon-it rises before us a majestic presence in the piled up arches of the Coliseum-it lurks an unsuspected treasure amid the oblivious dust of archives and monasteries-it is embodied in all the looms of religions, of races, of families.” ~ Charles Thomas Newton , Archaeologist

“In the evening we came upon the Coliseum when it was already twilight. When one looks at it, all else seems little. The edifice is so vast, that one cannot hold the image of it in one’s soul: in memory, we think it smaller and then return to it again to find it every time greater than before.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Thought-provoking Colosseum quotes

It’s not all fun and (gladiatorial) games, however.   The legacy of the Colosseum and the history of the Romans have provoked some deeper contemplation.

These are a few of the more serious thoughts inspired by the Colosseum.

“Rome is the capital of Europe; it’s as simple as that. You need to see what the Romans did 2,000 years ago. They were so advanced compared to the rest of the world. They showed us how to make roads, toilet seats, how to do irrigation, and more. When you see the Colosseum you won’t believe it was built so long ago.” – Gino D’Acampo

“When you study history and look at every civilization that has grown up and died off, they all leave one remnant: a major sports colosseum at the heart of their capital. Our fate can be different; but only if we start doing things differently”. ~ Thomas Friedman

“Evil can also be beautiful. The Coliseum in Rome, for example, a wonderful structure with an awful past. Just think about the bloody gladiator fights there.” ~ Rem Koolhaas

Cinematic quotes about the Colosseum

You’re all familiar with some of the most popular movies set in Rome, such as  Gladiator .

Directors want the gorgeous backdrop of Rome for their scenes, just as much as you want to visit these attractions to get your spectacular  Rome Instagram photos .

However, I was a bit surprised to see directors drawing parallels between the Colosseum and the competitiveness of the film industry.

“The beating heart of Rome is not the marble of the Senate, it’s the sand of the Colosseum. He’ll bring them death and they will love him for it.” ~ Gracchus,  Gladiator

“I’m shakin’ the dust of this crummy little town off my feet and I’m gonna see the world. Italy, Greece, the Parthenon, the Colosseum.” ~ George Bailey ,  It’s a Wonderful Life

“One of the reasons I love to jump back and forth between mediums is that film does allow me to be more literal. I can go to the real place. I can go to the Coliseum, and I don’t have to fake it.” – Julie Taymor

“In ‘Roma,’ I wanted to get across the idea that underneath Rome today is ancient Rome. So close. I am always conscious of that, and it thrills me. Imagine being in a traffic jam at the Coliseum! Rome is the most wonderful movie set in the world… As was the case with many of my film ideas, it was inspired by a dream” ~ Federico Fellini

“People like reality; I think it’s always happened from the Roman times, when people used to go to a coliseum and watch people compete against each other. I think networks and cable channels find it an easier way of producing and putting things together, because people will watch it and it’s cheaper.” ~ David Charvet

“Listen, you make a big movie, you’re going into the Coliseum, and people are going to give you the thumbs up or the thumbs down. And that’s part of the game. It’s part of the fun as well.” ~ Sam Mendes

Final Thoughts:

It’s not too surprising that the Colosseum in Rome has been the spark of inspiration for so many quotes.

Its longevity is a testament to the engineering capabilities of the ancient Romans.  As an engineer myself, I can certainly appreciate that!  And its beauty, well, that speaks for itself.

I’ll bet these Colosseum quotes have you dreaming of taking a vacation to Italy!

Buon viaggio!

After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

Ukraine Urges Allies to Allow Their Weapons to Target Russian Air Power

After bombs again rained on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-biggest city, President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Western partners to permit the use of their weapons against air bases inside Russia.

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

As bombs dropped by Russian warplanes tore through residential districts in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv this weekend, killing at least four people and injuring dozens more, President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday called on allies to further ease restrictions on the use of Western weapons so that his forces could use them against Russian air bases.

The Biden administration’s recent decision to allow Ukraine to use certain weapons to hit forces inside Russia has had an immediate impact, helping Ukraine thwart Moscow’s offensive north of Kharkiv and slowing the bombardment of the city, Ukraine’s second-largest, which is only about 25 miles from the border.

But the lifting of U.S. restrictions does not apply to the use of Army Tactical Missile Systems, known as ATACMS, some of which have a range of around 190 miles. Those longer-range weapons would be needed to hit air bases deep in Russian territory that are used by the bombers. Kyiv has been left to rely largely on its own expanding fleet of domestically produced drones to go after those bases.

Ukraine’s air defenses are gradually being strengthened after months of delays in American military assistance, but Russia continues to mount daily bombardments and Mr. Zelensky is desperate to find ways to thwart the attacks before they begin.

“We have enough determination to destroy terrorists on their territory — it is only fair — and we need the same determination from our partners,” he said in a post on social media on Sunday.

“Just this day alone, our warriors shot down two Russian Kalibr missiles,” he wrote. “Yesterday — 12 Russian missiles and 13 attack drones. And so on — every night and every day.”

His office released a video with the post that showed what it said was some of the carnage Russia had inflicted in the past couple of weeks. The footage gives a 90-second tour through the fire and flames caused by strikes in nearly every region of Ukraine that have been reported by local officials and emergency workers.

The most recent attacks this weekend included strikes that destroyed roughly half of the buildings at Ivano-Frankovsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas in western Ukraine, and an attack on Kyiv that ended before dawn on Sunday with debris from missiles shot out of the sky crashing into homes and apartment buildings, wounding several people, according to city officials and emergency services.

On Sunday evening, emergency crews raced to find survivors after another aerial bombardment targeting Kharkiv. Mr. Zelensky said on social media that at least one person had been killed in the attack.

Mr. Zelensky said that more could be done to stop the bombardments, and he pointed as evidence to the immediate impact the revised rules of engagement have had in and around Kharkiv.

For the first time since Moscow launched its cross-border offensive north of the city in early May, there were no reported major Russian offensive actions in the area, Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesman for the Ukrainian military, said on Sunday.

According to Mr. Voloshyn, Russian forces were “withdrawing some units for replenishment,” while continuing to bombard the area and fortify new defensive lines.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based research group, noted the decline in Russian infantry attacks north of Kharkiv but said that Moscow appeared to be stepping up its assaults in other parts of eastern Ukraine. Military experts have said that they think the Russian attacks near Kharkiv were intended, at least in part, to create gaps elsewhere by stretching Ukrainian forces more thinly. Russia continued to make grinding gains along other parts of the front.

But as Western arms flowed into Ukraine and the Biden administration eased restrictions on the use of American weapons, artillery crews outside Kharkiv were given permission to use truck-mounted, multiple-rocket launchers known as HIMARS, which fire satellite-guided rockets up to 62 miles, to strike Russian troops across the border. Almost immediately, commanders in the area have noted, the pace of Russian assaults slowed as infantry units got bogged down and were left with little support.

Ukraine also targeted the S300 and S400 systems that Russia has used to fire missiles toward Kharkiv from across the border. There have been no reports of those types of missiles hitting the city since the batteries were taken out, according to Ukrainian officials.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv region’s military administration, said, “The significant decrease in Russian missile terror against Kharkiv and the region proves that it is absolutely possible to protect our cities and communities from Russian bombs.”

Mr. Zelensky said he was “grateful to America for a strong decision that helped us stabilize the situation in the Kharkiv border region,” adding that “such decisions need to be continued.”

Ukrainian officials have expressed a particular desire to stop the powerful guided bombs that the Kremlin has deployed.

Last week, a Telegram channel called Fighterbomber, which has close connections to the Russian military, shared a video claiming to show the use of one such giant bomb, known as a FAB-3000 , north of Kharkiv. Weighing more than 6,600 pounds, the weapon is among the most powerful bombs in Russian service, at least three times bigger than some of the U.S.-made bombs that Israel has used in Gaza.

Ilya Yevlash, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, said that it would not be possible to comment on claims that the FAB-3000 had been used until the wreckage was analyzed.

Russia has already devised winged guidance systems for its arsenal of older bombs, weighing 500 pounds to more than 3,000 pounds, turning them into weapons that can be deployed by warplanes out of range of Ukrainian air defenses.

Those bombs helped pave the way for Russian forces to capture the city of Avdiivka at the start of the year and have played an integral role in Russia’s advances since then.

Russia fired more than 3,200 guided bombs in May, Mr. Zelensky has said. On Saturday, he said that Moscow had already fired more than 2,400 this month.

Pentagon officials have declined to go into the specifics of the new guidance regarding the deployment of American weapons, but, shortly after President Biden approved their use across the border, Michael Carpenter, senior director for Europe at the National Security Council, told the Ukrainian state news agency that the decision “doesn’t apply to ATACMS or long-range strikes.”

Maj. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, reiterated that point this week.

“The ability to be able to fire back when fired upon is really what this policy is focused on,” he said.

When it comes to “long-range munitions like ATACMS,” he noted, “there’s been no change in the policy.”
