FAQ About Travel Insurance to Hong Kong

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Hong Kong. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Hong Kong can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Claim

  • Frequently asked questions: Travel Insurance

Travel insurance coverage can differ depending on the insurance provider and policy. In general, travel insurance can help cover expenses related to trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost or stolen baggage, and travel interruptions.

In general, travel insurance covers the 3 main types of coverage for medical and accident expenses:

  • Medical coverage includes costs for accidents or illnesses during the trip, like fees for overseas doctors and follow-up visits after returning to Hong Kong.
  • Personal accident coverag e provides reimbursement for death, permanent disability, and severe burns resulting from accidents during the trip.
  • Emergency support coverage includes emergency medical evacuation or repatriation, visits for relatives, and more.

Comparing insurance policies is complicated. There are so many areas you can be insured in, but not all are equal in importance.  So how do you know which aspects to compare?

Review your trip quickly and identify the most likely scenarios to occur

First of all, you definitely want to make sure that you’re covered in the scenarios that are more likely to occur on your trip. Sure, it’s nice to know you’re being covered for kidnapping or terrorist attacks, but statistically speaking you’re more likely to come down with a bout of food poisoning or lose your luggage. So, review your trip quickly and find out the most likely situations to happen during your trip.

Here are key areas to look out for when deciding on the best value for travel insurance:

  • Medical coverage : Unless you’re invincible, there’s always the chance you’ll fall ill or get involved in an accident. Medical coverage can pay for your overseas medical expenses, as well as medical expenses incurred upon your return to Hong Kong.
  • Travel mishaps : Lost luggage, missed flights, trip delays and cancellations can happen on even the most meticulously-planned of trips.
  • Loss or damage to personal belongings : Get compensated if you are pickpocketed, your belongings get damaged in transit and so on.

Find your best fitted travel insurance plan

Review each plan you have come across and find out your best fitted plan. For instance, some plans may have a higher coverage on medical expenses, but not so much on personal perperty protection. After knowing which one you want, look at the premiums.

Taking an adult going on a 7-day trip to Japan as an example, the lowest premium travel plan is offered by Alliance (HK$196), while most others range from around HK$200 to HK$300.

When planning for riskier activities that have a higher chance of accidents, it is important to consider getting insurance coverage specifically for those activities, including skiing, scuba diving, and parachuting.

Note that some travel insurance policies have limitations on coverage, including restrictions on height and depth. For example, if a skiing location exceeds a certain height, the travel insurance may not cover the activity. We strongly recommend thoroughly reviewing the details of insurance policies.

Here is the comparison of travel insurance for a 7-day single trip to Japan:

Losing your phone, wallet, or any other personal property can ruin your trip, but if you get travel insurance beforehand, you can be assured of being compensated for your loss!

When it comes to claims for property loss, there are certain things you need to do to meet the insurance company’s requirements. For instance, if you encounter theft or damage to your property, you should report it to the local police within 24 hours and get a written report.

And when you make a claim, you’ll need to provide receipts for the items that were lost or damaged. Make sure the receipts have the purchase date, price, model, and category of each item. Also, keep in mind that the insurance company might subtract the depreciation value of the property when calculating the coverage amount.

Here is a comparison of the travel insurance offering the highest coverage for property losses:

Zurich Get “Z” Go+ Deluxe Plan: The highest coverage for lost property

The Zurich Get “Z” Go+ Deluxe Plan offers the highest compensation for lost property, up to HK$25,000. If you have valuable property that needs to be covered, this insurance plan is worth considering.

Last tip: Get your insurance as early as possible

Buying your travel insurance in haste robs you of the chance to compare the various options and get a value-for-money policy that offers enough coverage at a reasonable price. You definitely don’t want to spend too much on a policy, or get one that’s so thin it barely covers you for anything. So spend a bit of time to pick the best policy for you, taking a careful consideration of various factors, including your destination, trip duration, and planned activities.

Travel insurance protects you not just the time when you’re on holiday to enjoy life, but also the weeks before you leave Hong Kong. So, the only way you can have a trip with the peace in mind is to buy your travel insurance in advance—not in the cab, on your smartphone as you rush to the airport!  Don’t forget to check out the latest offers from MoneySmart travel insurance selection.

Hong Kong Travel Insurance Plans

Medical care standards are excellent but costly. Healthcare is divided into public and private. In the case of emergency care, you will be taken to a public hospital, where you must pay for emergency services. There are many English-speaking doctors throughout Hong Kong. Purchasing travel insurance when visiting Hong Kong is recommended before your arrival.

Travel Medical Insurance Plans for Visitors to Hong Kong

For visitors to Hong Kong, a quality travel insurance plan is a must. These plans will cover your medical expenses if you get sick or injured while traveling abroad.

There are no required vaccinations to obtain before traveling to Hong Kong unless you are coming from a country with a yellow fever outbreak. Over the winter months from December to March, Hong Kong is known to have an intense flu season. If you plan on traveling during the winter, a flu vaccine is recommended.

Safety Tips for Visiting Hong Kong

Drinking tap water is not recommended as its quality can vary immensely depending on the pipes of the building you are in. It is safer to stick to bottled water or boiling tap water for 3 minutes.

Mosquitoes are prevalent. Therefore, you should always wear insect repellant and put hydrocortisone cream on any bites you receive.

If you need emergency medical assistance during your trip, dial 999 and ask for an ambulance. You should contact your insurance/medical assistance company promptly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment.

When to Travel to Hong Kong

The climate is a subtropical climate with humid and hot summers and cool, dry winters. The best months to travel are October, November, and December. June to August is the rainy season. September holds the greatest threat of typhoons.

Getting Around

The only way into the country is through the mainland of China. Transportation to and from China is easy to find, with buses and trains traveling back and forth several times each day and too many destinations.

The country has an extensive public transportation system, including buses that take you all over the island, trains, ferries, subways, and taxis. Taxis are a bargain and are easily found on the streets. The drivers are said to be quite honest, but if you feel that you have been overcharged, there is a complaint hotline you can call to report it.

Social Interactions

Because it is so densely populated, it is common to show respect to strangers by paying as little attention to them as possible as you pass them on the street. For tourists, this can be taken as unfriendliness when, in reality, it is helpful in making sure each person has as much personal space as needed. With the busyness of many people, necessary interactions are efficient and quick, not like the typical warm encounter you may be used to.

Cost of Visiting Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a costly destination. The biggest expense is accommodations, with nightlife coming in a close second. As mentioned earlier, taxis and transportation are incredibly cheap compared to other parts of the world. Another tip to know is that there is no sales tax. You will see a 3% government tax on hotel stays. ATMs are widely found and are linked to international banking systems.

Travel and Safety Advice for Visitors to Hong Kong

At International Citizens Insurance, we strive to ensure you have all the information you need to travel safely to the most sought-after destinations in the world. Hong Kong travel insurance  can go a long way in protecting your health while you’re abroad, but there are also a few things you should keep in mind while getting ready for your  trip to Hong Kong .

1) Air Quality

Air quality in Hong Kong is among the poorest in the industrialized world. Travelers who are prone to asthma or bronchial infection should take special precautions. Plan to minimize time spent outdoors. Daily air quality index updates are available through news media and smartphone apps, so stay indoors during the worst conditions. Use a mask to reduce pollution intake.

One important thing to remember about Hong Kong’s air quality is that it can drastically reduce visibility. During the worst pollution, smog significantly reduces the number of daylight hours. For that reason, plan to return to your hotel early if you are not comfortable navigating Hong Kong in the dark. The summer months tend to be the best regarding air quality.

2) Typhoon Season

Typhoon season can be unpredictable throughout much of Asia. Luckily, Hong Kong’s advanced early warning system reports typhoons on all TV channels and in many major buildings. Typhoons are ranked between T1 and T10, with T3 typhoons considered serious enough to avoid coastal areas and take shelter. During a rare T8 typhoon, most workers will be excused.

If a typhoon of at least strength T3 is reported, return to your hotel to take shelter. Hotel staff can direct you to other shelters if needed, but this is very rare. Typhoon seasons run from May through September, but most storms skirt Hong Kong and create minimal disruption. A T10 typhoon occurred in 2012, but before that, the last T10 was all the way back in 1999.

3) Pickpockets & Scams

As with any major destination, con artists are always at work to relieve tourists of their money. Pickpockets, in particular, focus on visitors from abroad, not locals. Use a safe at your hotel to avoid carrying valuables into crowded city streets or public transportation. When carrying a wallet, keep your IDs separate, so you do not lose them in the event of theft.

There are more than 18,000 taxis in Hong Kong, most driven by independent owner-operators. As in other cities, you should be alert to unlicensed taxis. Insist that your taxi driver uses the meter to determine your fare. A semicircular, green emblem on the front grill and rear of a vehicle indicates a licensed taxi, with the number of available seats displayed.

4) Vaccinations

According to the Centers for Disease Control, travelers should strongly consider hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations before traveling to Hong Kong. Hepatitis is frequently passed to visitors through contaminated food, especially street food, as well as contaminated water. Typhoid is particularly important if you will be traveling anywhere outside of central Hong Kong.

5) Medical Care

The healthcare system in China is one of the most advanced in Asia. However, care can be costly. In an emergency, you will be transported to a government-run hospital, typically charging a flat fee of over $500 (USD) for services. Other costs may also apply. Emergency care is guaranteed, so you will be billed later if you cannot pay immediately.

By contacting your local consulate or the private hospital of your choice, you can find a variety of doctors, dentists, and others who speak English. Private care is less expensive than a public hospital for visitors to Hong Kong; however, appropriate  travel insurance can help you significantly reduce what could be very hefty bills for specialized treatment.

For visitors to Hong Kong, a quality travel insurance plan is a must. The recommended plans below will cover your medical expenses if you get sick or injured while traveling abroad.

Enjoy Your Visit to Hong Kong

Despite the precautions, Hong Kong is a very rewarding place to visit for business or pleasure. I hope you will find your trip goes even more smoothly with these details in mind.

It is easier in Hong Kong to exchange currencies. Also, all kinds of international cards are accepted widely in HK. You can also withdraw money quite easily in Hong Kong through ATMs.
