The Brumback Library

castle tour ohio

Few, if any, libraries have the look and history like that of the Brumback Castle Library. The exterior of the building was created with a combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles with its turreted towers and Ludowici tile roof. Supported by the Brumback family, the completed library was dedicated and opened to the public in early 1901 as the first tax-supported library in the country.

You can enjoy the exterior architecture of the Brumback Library Castle at any time and the library is open for visitors daily, Monday through Saturday.

Tiedemann House (Franklin Castle)

castle tour ohio

Franklin Castle (also known as Tiedemann House) has inspired countless ghost stories that have evolved into urban legends over the years. Some have referred to the castle as the most haunted house in all of Ohio with stories of unexplained voices and ghost sightings. The Victorian-era property sat vacant for years after it experienced a fire in 1999 until it was purchased in 2011 by a European couple who have been working to restore it.

In March 2017, Franklin Castle was featured in season 1 (episode 3) of the reality TV series “Paranormal Lockdown”. If you’d like to learn more about Franklin Castle, its truths, history, and mysteries, you can find the book written by two Cleveland locals, Haunted Franklin Castle, at Amazon.com. Unfortunately, the private property is not open for tours, but you can drive by to see the exterior of the castle anytime.

Glamorgan Castle

castle tour ohio

This grand Vermont marble mansion was originally built as a residence for Col. William Henry Morgan and his family in 1904. After many lives as an Elks lodge and the headquarters for a machining business, Glamorgan Castle currently serves as the central administration building for Alliance City Schools.

The castle sits on 20.5 acres of land and although the outside looks like an ancient castle, the inside was designed for comfort in a combination of styles including Greek columns, a grand staircase with a circular balcony, carved wood, Renaissance-style tapestries, and a Japanese breakfast room with bamboo trim and teakwood flooring.

Guided public tours of the property are offered on most Friday afternoons, lasting about an hour, and include a number of stairs making it challenging for visitors with physical limitations. Private tours can also be arranged by appointment through their website. (The tour takes one hour and there are many steps. The Castle is not handicapped accessible.)

Admission is a per-person donation (cash or check only!); children 6 and under are free. All of the donations go towards the renovation of the mansion.

This nationally recognized historic mansion was originally built as a family home for the wealthiest man in Shelby County, W.H.C Goode. Now operating as a bed, breakfast, and spa resort, Great Stone Castle offers visitors an old castle feel in a cottage-like setting, providing comfort, class, and a royal feel with its 100-year-old oak trees and luxurious décor. The inside features four levels, each boasting 4,000+ square feet of living space, rare hardwoods, and Victorian area furniture. The mansion is suitable for a variety of activities and is a beautiful place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary or to find a quiet spot to just get away for the weekend.

Grizer Castle

While this medieval-style castle looks as though it’s been around for more than 4,000 years, the construction of Grizer Castle began in 2014. The castle sits atop one of the town’s highest points in a vast 80 acres of beautiful grounds. Grizer Castle is the perfect place to host weddings, birthdays, and special events. It is currently open by appointment only.

In constructing Grizner Castle, owner Bill Grizer envisioned his Ohio castle to be a location for year-round festivals and entertainment with its dungeon, library, and honeymoon suite. Since he was a young boy, Grizer had always dreamed of living in a castle and after turning his family home into a magnificent 15th-century castle, he decided to create another one – Grizer Castle – to accommodate guests and hold events and parties where anyone can experience “the enchanted medieval ages.”

After being built room by room without floor plans, the castle sits at the top of 30 acres (1,200 feet technically making it a mountaintop) and has been offering unique experiences to visitors since it opened to the public in 2002.

With a turn of luck, the castle found itself featured in the 2016 season finale of Gordon Ramsay’s TV show “Hotel Hell” (2016). After being seen by more than 20 million viewers, the hotel has been thriving ever since. While filming the show, Ramsay spent his nights in the Thering Suite (suite 9).

In addition to the primary property and cottages, Landoll’s Mohican Castle has recently added several new suites complete with an indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna. Check their website for dates and times of their Ghost Walk and Haunted History Tour of Heyd cemetery and spirits of Landoll’s Mohican Castle as well as other special events.

Located in German Village the home was built by Frederick William Schwartz in the 1800s to look like an ancient castle with a turret of windows that can be seen through the village.

The legend of the castle is that Schwartz, a German Immigrant and pharmacist, after building it for his fiancée (who broke the engagement), became insane and took to odd behaviors and built secret passageways into his home.

While the home is not open for touring, it can be rented.

Squire’s Castle

A registered national landmark, Squire’s Castle in Willoughby Hills is not actually a castle, but rather the ruins of the gatehouse of a castle that was never constructed. Built with local siltstone, Fergus B. Squire built the gatehouse for his family with two upper floors, a kitchen, a breakfast porch, and a basement in about 1897.

Today, while only the shell of it remains, it is a popular site for weddings, hikers, and castle enthusiasts on the grounds of the Cleveland Metro Parks in the stunning North Chagrin Reservation.

Aside from its superficial features, the castle’s story is quite interesting, including its acquisition by Harry D. Andrews through his Boy Scout Troop and the Cincinnati Enquirer. When you visit, you’ll hear all about its eccentric, intriguing, and intellectual creator, Harry Andrews, and the Knights of the Golden Trail.

This castle in Ohio is open for self-guided tours daily from 11 AM to 5 PM from April 1 through October 31, and Friday through Sunday from November 1 to March 31 (excluding certain holidays).

Frankenstein’s Castle

2655 S. Patterson Boulevard, Kettering, OH 45409

Although this building isn’t technically a castle, it’s a stone, turret-like structure with medieval-esque architecture. Surprisingly, you might stumble upon the tower while exploring the Hills and Dales MetroPark.

The “castle,” which is also known as The Witches’ Tower and Patterson Tower, was built in the early 1940s. It’s a popular spot of urban legend—many claim that it is haunted.

It’s been inaccessible to the public since the 1960s, after a tragic lightning strike resulted in someone’s death, but you can still see the tower from the outside.

14 Real Castles Right Here In Ohio (Many Of Which You Can Visit)

' src=

When people think about castles, they don’t think about Ohio.

Most would picture crumbling medieval castles of the English Countryside, or perhaps the stunning chateaus of 18th century France.

Although Ohio’s castles may not all have been built centuries ago, they are still marvelous in their own right. While some were created simply as tourist attractions, several were built out of curiosity and ingenuity.

Loveland Castle

castle tour ohio

Construction on Chateau Laroche, aka Loveland Castle, began in 1929. World War I veteran and medievalist Harry D. Andrews was so inspired by his time in France during the war, that when he returned to Loveland, Ohio, he decided to build his own castle. He spent nearly 50 years constructing Chateau Laroche, and when he died, he gifted it to his Boy Scout troop, the Knights of the Golden Trail.

Squire’s Castle

castle tour ohio

Squire’s Castle was built in the 1890s, by oil tycoon, Fergus Squire. Initially intended as a gate house to a much larger estate, Squire sold the property before the estate could be built. Now owned by the Cleveland Metroparks, the castle is free and open to the public.

Mac-A-Cheek Castle

castle tour ohio

Built by French Huguenot immigrants, the Piatt Castles are some of the most well known chateaus in Ohio. Mac-A-Cheek, built by Abram Piatt was completed in 1871. Though it is slightly smaller than Mac-O-Chee, its secluded grounds give it an air of mystery.

Mac-O-Chee Castle

castle tour ohio

The second Piatt Castle, Mac-O-Chee, is slightly larger than its partner. Completed in 1879, Mac-O-Chee was built by Don Piatt. Mac-O-Chee has towers, elaborate painted ceilings, and towers, just as you’d expect to find in the grandest castles of Europe.

Ravenwood Castle

If you’re looking for the perfect place to host your Game of Thrones Reenactment dinner or a rousing game of Dungeons and Dragons, look no further. Although only completed in 1995, Ravenwood Castle was built in the style of the 12th and 13th century castles that dotted the British countryside. The original owners were self proclaimed Anglophiles, and wanted a special place here in Ohio where people could be transported through time. Ravenwood hosts events all year long, including murder mysteries and themed weekends.

Loveland castle near cincinnati.

Loveland Castle in Ohio

The Loveland Castle was built by Harry Delos Andrews who acquired the land in the 1920s. Harry modeled the castle as a full scale replica of those he visited during his travels in Europe after serving in World War I.

While you’re there, you might notice knights guarding the castle. These guards are part of the Knights of the Golden Trail, named after Harry’s childhood Boy Scout troop where the land and idea for the Loveland Castle all began. Upon Harry’s death in 1981, he willed the castle to these Knights who carry on its tradition to this day!

Tours of the castle are self-guided, but you’re welcome to ask questions about its history to the knight on duty. Spend the day exploring the castle grounds and discover the secrets Harry included this historic castle’s architecture – can you find the entrance to the secret room he built in the garden?

Can I spend the night in a castle in Ohio?

Ohio castles are full of history and charm, but they're relatively few and far between. After all, our state has an impressive 44,825 square miles of landscape, but only a handful of castles. Nonetheless, out of the handful that  do exist, quite a few of Ohio's castles offer lodging. You can live out your own personal fairytale in a super cozy room at Landoll's Mohican Castle in Loudonville. Tucked away amidst the greenery of Hocking Hills, Ravenwood Castle also offers overnight lodging... plus, they have Medieval village cottages available for rent. Who wouldn't want to stay in these princess-friendly destinations?!

What are the most charming small towns in Ohio?

When one thinks of castle, it's impossible not to imagine a pleasant fairytale landscape to accompany said edifice. Ohio is full of towns that are downright picturesque and somewhat provincial. Medina , Ohio has a few castle-like features, and it feels like a town from an old school train set. Put-In-Bay is an island city that many travelers have nicknamed the Key West of Ohio, thanks to its tourist-friendly culture, scenic shoreline, and killer sunsets. Port Clinton conjures up images of quaint New England fishing villages, and Gallipolis has history that predates the founding of the state. No matter which small town you visit, you will find that Ohio communities have much to offer.

What are the best man-made attractions in Ohio?

Human hands have crafted some remarkable things over the years, and many of those structures have transformed the local landscape. The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are straight out of international parks, offering visitors a view of landscaping that's unique to each respective culture. The Temple of Tolerance is another incredible man-made attraction that's almost unbelievable... and it is made largely out of recycled pieces of scrap!

This is an interesting historic site and worth the low cost of admission. I wish you were allowed to see more of the house but what you do get to see is quite intriguing and it’s a good look into how the 1% lived in that era. Jeff S.
