The launch of bus franchising today - putting power back into the hands of the people over operators - heralds the start of the Bee Network in Greater Manchester.

The network is a plan for a London-style integrated transport system over bus, tram and eventually, train. A one ticket fits all approach as commuters in the capital have enjoyed for years. On Sunday, Greater Manchester becomes the first area in England to re-take control over its bus services.

Operators will have no power to set routes, fares or frequencies - they have bid for, and secured contracts to run, buses on behalf of the elected Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the elected mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Buses were deregulated everywhere except London in 1986 - resulting in a fall in passengers everywhere outside the capital.

And as decisions are made locally - not by companies seeking profits - passengers will wield real power; performance targets and customer comments will be used to inform what operators are paid to run services.

What is the Bee Network?

The network - with its striking yellow livery and nod to Manchester's worker bee emblem - is the name of Greater Manchester's plan to join up buses with trams and trains - as well as cycling networks with miles of walking paths.

Transport bosses and civic leaders envisage a city region where passengers can use just one ticket - or pass - to travel on multiple forms of connected types of public transport, as is the case in London.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is expected to have the network operational by 2024, with commuter rail services expected to be joining the network in 2030. There are also ideas for future underground options and tram-train services, where Metrolink can run on the same lines as trains do. Put simply, it's about simplifying how we use public transport, making it easier to plan journeys.

When does bus franchising start?

Bus franchising symbolises the real start of the Bee Network. The first of three phases of bus franchising in Greater Manchester was beginning today - covering Bolton, Wigan and parts of Salford and Bury. All other areas of Greater Manchester will be included by 2025.

The first franchised bus in Greater Manchester in almost 40 years was due to leave Farnworth bus station in Bolton at 4.30am on Sunday - the number 521 service.

The bus will head for New Bury, the Royal Bolton Hospital then the Logistics North hub before Westhoughton and Blackrod.

In total, phase one of franchising involves 175 bus services.

A second stage is due to go live in March next year, covering Oldham, Rochdale and parts of Bury, Salford and north Manchester, with a third and final stage pencilled in for January 2025, when franchised buses will serve Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and the remaining areas of Manchester and Salford.

What will - or won't - change?

On the whole, the bus you usually catch won't change its route or number from today. Passengers will be able to catch exactly the same bus as they did before. But under franchising, civic leaders say they want to make big improvements and real change.

As the new era rolls out and beds in, passengers can expect to see more daytime and weekend services on some routes.

Earlier and later buses on some routes are also likely, so more people can connect to the first or last tram or train of the day.

manchester bus travel app

Transport bosses say reviews of routes will be held, so improvements can be made in terms of frequencies and routes.

Before franchising, operators cut axe routes they didn't see as profitable, with local leaders obliged to step in to subsidise services so they remain on the roads. There are many people who depend on buses as their sole public transport option. School services were franchised at the start of the new school year.

Civic leaders say the system is better because it will allow them to plan services in the interests of communities buses serve.

What about the operators?

Transport bosses said a competitive tendering process was held.

Go North West, part of the GoAhead Group, was chosen to run the large franchised service in Bolton and Wigan with Diamond running seven smaller franchises under the first stage. Stagecoach and First, together with Diamond, become involved in the second stage by March next year.

Large contracts consist of ten contracts, each five years long, with extension options. Smaller contracts consist of approximately 25 contracts, each three years long.

What about fares?

The Mayor, Andy Burnham, announced a capping of fares for all Greater Manchester bus services last year. That will remain in force until at least this time next year.

Single journeys cost £2 for adults and £1 for children. A day of unlimited travel using any bus costs £5 for adults and £2.50 for children, with a week of unlimited travel by bus in Greater Manchester costs £21 for adults and £10.50 for children.

manchester bus travel app

Once franchising is complete passengers will be able to touch in and out on any bus or tram service in Greater Manchester and have their fare automatically be calculated up to the daily cap.

But the cost of public transport is being cut to mark the launch of franchising. The new Bee Network app puts real-time bus, tram and train travel information at customers' fingertips for the first time. From Monday, it will allow a passenger to buy combined bus and tram tickets at 20 per cent cheaper.

On the app, people will be able to buy any bus ticket, unlimited bus travel on any day, plus zones on Metrolink, at a cost that works out 20 per cent cheaper than it would have done had they paid separately.

The Bee Network app

The new Bee Network app - downloadable via the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store - went live on September 18.

It will give passengers real-time updates in terms of bus, tram and train travel information, and also allow them to buy the 20 per cent cheaper combined bus and tram tickets - the new Anybus plus tram ticket.

Passenger feedback from the Rate Your Journey feature will be key to making bus services accountable to the travelling public in Greater Manchester for the first time in decades.

Customer focused performance targets - including punctuality and reliability of services and levels of customer complaints - will sit at the heart of the operators' contracts and impact what they get paid. A new Bee Network customer contact centre means customers will be able to get in touch to have their say.

In time more features will be added to the app (including journey planning and disruption information), making it the one-stop shop for public transport in Greater Manchester.

What will change in terms of actual buses?

The new colour will be obvious to all - a striking yellow also adorning bus stops, stations and interchanges. From Sunday, a fleet of 50 new zero-emission, Bee Network-branded buses - known as 'ZEBs' - will come into service.

They will offer a range of customer improvements, including two bays for wheelchair-users, hearing induction loops, audio and visual announcement systems and anti-slip flooring.

manchester bus travel app

Buses already running in Greater Manchester will be upgraded over the next two years. A key Bee Network commitment is full accessibility across the city region. The new buses will also offer step-free access to all 99 Metrolink stops in Greater Manchester.

A total of 30 new TravelSafe Support and Enforcement Officers (TSEOs) will be patrolling franchised bus services, interchanges and bus stations from Sunday. They will also ride on buses.

What are the future goals of franchising?

Civic and transport bosses have already published an ambitious blueprint for the future in terms of Greater Manchester's new buses.

The newly-devised strategy contains a raft of bold targets and ambitions under franchising.

=Transport bosses want a 30 per cent increase in passenger numbers by 2030 compared to current figures - equating to 50 million more bus journeys every year. And the strategy sets out an ambition for 90 per cent of the entire Greater Manchester population to be within 400 metres of a 30-minute frequency bus or Metrolink service on weekdays.

The bus strategy also reveals plans for buses to run at least every 12 minutes on key orbital and radial routes across Greater Manchester. Committees are set to be set up in each of Greater Manchester's 10 boroughs to assess performance and suggest new ideas.

Will trains join the Bee Network?

Work is also already underway to bring local train services under local control by the end of the decade.

The first step will see a payment pilot on train services between Stalybridge and Victoria, and Glossop and Piccadilly that will, for the first time, allow passengers to touch-in and out at the start and end of their journey and have their fare automatically worked out for them.

Manchester’s first locally controlled bus service in 40 years launches Sunday

Transport users could get combined bus and tram tickets at 20% cheaper than if purchased separately

A Bee Network App which shows Greater Manchester’s bus, tram and train travel times in real time has officially gone live today.

The news comes ahead of the launch of Greater Manchester’s first locally controlled bus services in nearly 40 years, taking to the roads this Sunday, September 24th.

Commuters can download the app today on the App store or Google Play and have all the information and tickets they need for their journey through the convenience of a touch of a button.

With Bee Network services starting on Sunday (September 24th), customers can now download the Bee Network App or visit the new website, where they can get access to live departure times, see where their nearest bus or tram stop is or rate their journey.

manchester bus travel app

Combined bus and tram tickets will also be available from Sunday – which could work out as 20% cheaper than Anybus and Metrolink tickets when purchased separately – as part of a newly reformed Greater Manchester public transport system.

The move represents the biggest change to public transport in a generation, after services were deregulated across Great Britain in 1986.

manchester bus travel app

Since then, the number of bus journeys made in London – where bus services remained under local control – has doubled, while in Greater Manchester bus use has fallen from 355m in 1986/87, to just over 182m at the end of the last decade (and before Covid).

Bus franchising signifies the start of the Bee Network and is the first step in reversing decades-long decline in bus use, with the recently published GM Bus Strategy setting out how the city-region aims to deliver 50 million more bus journeys each year by the end of the decade.

Passengers can give feedback via the Rate Your Journey feature, which will be key to making bus services accountable to the travelling public in Greater Manchester for the first time in decades.

Customer focused performance targets – including punctuality and reliability of services and levels of customer complaints – will sit at the heart of the operators’ contracts and impact what they get paid.

And a new Bee Network customer contact centre means customers can now get in touch have their say about transport in Greater Manchester by calling to speak to a member of staff.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said it was an exciting moment for public transport in the city region.

He said: “This is a real milestone for the Bee Network coming less than a week before the first phase of bus franchising begins.

Say Yellow to the #BeeNetwork ! 🐝 We’re absolutely buzzing to be here! pic.twitter.com/O7mIF7MKdJ — Bee Network (@BeeNetwork) September 18, 2023

“It’s a taste of how, under this new system, customers will have a much better travelling experience, with their wants and needs coming first and foremost at all times. “Our new app and website bring passenger travel in Greater Manchester firmly into the 21st century, with timetables, tickets and live updates literally at people’s fingertips.”

Norman Baker from Campaign for Better Transport said the ‘Bee Network will be the first integrated transport system of its kind in 40 years’.

“It’s fantastic to see how this will benefit Manchester, beginning with the first phase of Bee buses being brought under local control, while the network’s new app and website will make planning and paying for journeys simple and seamless,” he added.

manchester bus travel app

Vernon Everitt, Greater Manchester Transport Commissioner, has welcomed the transformation that the launch of the Bee Network will bring. “The new Bee Network, alongside the first phase releases of a new app and website and an integrated contact centre, will help us to usher in a new era of joined up public transport and active travel in the region,” he said. “Better transport will help grow the region’s economy and productivity, delivering new homes, jobs and inclusivity.

“The Rate Your Journey facility on the app will allow passengers to have their say directly to us and bus operators, bringing sharper accountability for services and shaping further improvements to the Bee Network,” Mr Everitt continued.

manchester bus travel app

He added: “All buses will be franchised by January 2025, enabling full ‘tap and go’ integrated ticketing across Metrolink and buses.

“We are also working with the rail industry to begin bringing tap and go payment to the region’s rail network in 2025 as part of fully joining up all public transport services and cycle hire.”

With accessibility and inclusivity in mind, a fleet of 50 new zero-emission, Bee Network-branded buses (ZEBs) will come into service.  These will include two bays for wheelchair-users, hearing induction loops, audio and visual announcement systems and anti-slip flooring.

Buses already running in Greater Manchester will be upgraded over the next two years as The Bee Network strives for full accessibility across the city region.

Two men charged with murder after torso discovered in Salford nature reserve

manchester bus travel app

Two men have now been charged with murder, following the discovery of a human torso in Kersal Dale. As well as that, more suspected human remains were also discovered this morning, Monday April 29th, in an alleyway close to the railway lines off Worsley Road, Eccles.

This follows earlier discoveries of human remains over the past three weeks, at Kersal Dale, Blackleach Reservoir and Colliery Wood, all in Salford.

Greater Manchester Police

Michal Jaroslaw Polchowski (25/04/1956) and Marcin Majerkiewicz (10/04/1982) both of Worsley Road, Eccles, have been charged with murder. They are set to appear at Tameside Magistrates Court this afternoon.

While formal identification is still ongoing, the remains found at Kersal Dale are believed to be of a local man in his 60s. The remains found at the other three locations are still to be tested, but police are confident they belong to the same victim.

ACC Sarah Jackson said: “We have had large numbers of officers, staff and specialists working diligently on this investigation over the last three weeks. It has been very much a large, collective effort, with the victim and family at the heart of it from the outset.

“We have specially trained officers deployed to support the family as they come to terms with this tragic news. They are aware of this morning’s further discovery and will continue to be kept up to date with how we are progressing.

“Despite the charges brought today, our work is far from over.

“The scenes we already have established in Bury and Salford will remain in place for much of this week whilst our searches and enquiries continue. Local officers will continue to patrol the impacted areas to provide reassurance.

“We will continue following every line of enquiry to recover and reunite the victim with his family, bringing a dignified end to this terrible scenario.

“I’d like to thank the communities of Salford and beyond for their cooperation throughout this investigation. I know this incident has come as a shock, and the support we’ve had from those in the area is very much appreciated.”

More human remains discovered in Greater Manchester as police identify victim

Detectives investigating the discovery of a torso in Kersal Dale have found more human remains around Greater Manchester. GMP released a statement on the weekend, revealing they had opened four scenes for extensive searches – one of them at a warehouse in Bury, and three in Salford. Searches took place at Blackleach reservoir, where human remains were found, and a dog walker found a package containing human remains at Colliery Wood. Officers believe they have now identified the man, who they believe to be a man in his 60s that lived in Salford, and his family have been informed. Two suspects have already been arrested in connection with the murder probe, with officers saying they are thought to have lived with the victim.

Greater Manchester Police / Facebook

Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, Senior Investigating Officer for this investigation, said in a statement at Blackleach reservoir yesterday, Sunday April 28th: “We have continued to make significant progress in our investigation into human remains being found in Kersal earlier this month.

“From day one, our priority has been to identify the man and his family so that we can give them the support and the answers that they need.

“Thanks to meticulous forensic work, we are now confident we have identified the man. Formal identification hasn’t yet taken place, but we believe he is a man in his 60s and lived in Salford.

“Specially-trained family liaison officers have met with his family this afternoon to give them the devastating news, and we will do all that we can to support them at this awful time.

“We believe he is known to the two suspects we have in custody. They have remained in custody for questioning over the weekend, as we work to establish how the victim met this tragic outcome.”

#UPDATE | Following developments this weekend in #Salford we are confident we have identified the victim, with his family being supported since. He continued: “We have painstakingly worked to follow up every line of inquiry in this investigation. Over the last couple of days, we have acted on information and had four scenes in place for extensive searches – one of them is at a warehouse in Bury, and three of them are in Salford, including here at Blackleach reservoir.

“Today, we have found some human remains at the reservoir here, and last night a dog walker found a package containing human remains at Colliery Wood. Forensic tests will continue to establish whose remains these are, but we are very confident that this is also the victim in our investigation.

“We have also been searching a house in Winton where we believe the victim and the two suspects lived. We have found evidence that the victim is likely to have died there – most likely in late March.

“While this is significant progress, we know there is still some way to go to complete this investigation. I also recognise details of this case will have been distressing for the people of Salford and beyond – including the officers that are diligently working on this investigation, and most importantly the man’s heartbroken family.

“Local officers will continue to patrol the affected areas, and we will provide updates when we have more information.”

Getting Around Manchester: Guide To Public Transportation

Getty Images

Like London, Manchester has a vast and reliable public transportation system. Known as Transport for Greater Manchester, or TfGM, the system connects the city's central part with its outskirts via tram, bus, and train. The tram, a light rail system, is called Manchester Metrolink and is the primary public transportation method in Manchester, connecting 99 total stops.

Manchester is actually quite sprawling when you consider the suburbs and surrounding areas. Still, the trams and buses connect most places, which means it's unnecessary to rent a car when visiting the city. Here's what you should know about using public transportation in Manchester.

How To Ride the Manchester Metrolink

Many commuters and visitors in Manchester use the Manchester Metrolink, which extends 65 miles and includes 99 stops. It's the longest and most extensive light rail in the U.K. It can often be quicker than driving, thanks to traffic in the city.

  • Fares: Metrolink has four zones, each with its own price structure. Single journeys in Zone 1 start at 1.40 pounds for an adult. If you plan to move around the city a lot during your stay, opt for a single-day travel card or a seven-day travel card, which can save you a lot of money. A single adult ticket traveling from Zone 1 to Zone 4 starts at 3.80 pounds. Certain groups are entitled to a discount, including children, 16-18 year olds and families traveling together.
  • How to Pay: Use a contactless credit or debit card or the mobile ticket app to tap in and out of your journey without needing to buy a separate ticket. There are also traditional ticket machines at each tram stop. Those staying longer should opt for a System One Travelcard , which allows the use of the bus, train, and tram around Manchester for one, seven, or 28 days.
  • Routes and Hours: During the week and on Saturdays, Metrolink runs from 6 a.m. until midnight, while on Sundays, it runs from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. The frequency of the trams varies depending on the time of day. There are different lines on Metrolink, all of which connect in central Manchester. Check the transport map for your best route.
  • Service Alerts: Manchester Metrolink occasionally has delays or service outages. Stay in touch with its current status on the TfGM website , which has live updates for all routes. The website also lists any upcoming service interruptions.
  • Transfers: Transfers between tram lines are easy to do, especially as most of the routes intersect at various points. Ticket prices are determined by zone, so it doesn't cost anything additional to change lines. Those using a contactless card to pay don't need to tap in and out when transferring trams.
  • Accessibility: All Metrolink trams and its tram stops are wheelchair accessible. Those using a mobility scooter will need a valid mobility scooter permit to bring a scooter on one of the Metrolink trams. Each tram has a designated area for wheelchairs and scooters and designated seats for those who have trouble standing. More information on Metrolink's accessibility is available on their website .

Riding the TfGM Buses

TfGM also has a range of bus lines that connect greater Manchester in addition to Metrolink. There are over 100 different routes, so chances are there's a bus in the direction you want to go. Many of the routes, including buses to Manchester Airport, also run a limited overnight schedule. Various companies run some of the buses in Manchester, so check online when planning a journey.

  • Fares: Tickets for the buses are available as single journey tickets or bus passes, which are the best option if you plan to make multiple trips. Tickets can be purchased on board the bus from the driver with cash, but it's easiest to use a contactless credit card. System One Travelcards can also be used on most buses.
  • Service Alerts: Any upcoming planned service changes can be found on the TfGM website .

Free TfGM Buses

Manchester offers three free bus routes in the city center. The routes include stops at Manchester Victoria Station, Manchester Piccadilly Station, the Northern Quarter, Chinatown, and the Medieval Quarter. The buses vary in times, but most run between 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 pm., with limited hours on Sundays and holidays. Check the map and timetable online to plan your trip.

Using the Local Trains

Several train companies operate out of Manchester, connecting the city to England, Wales, and Scotland. Trains are available to all of Manchester's suburbs and Manchester Airport, and many Metrolink tram lines connect with the local trains. To travel to London, hop on a train at Manchester Piccadilly station to London Euston. Use the Trainline website or mobile app to find the best routes and times and to buy tickets.

Taxis and Ride-Sharing Apps

Manchester has numerous taxi services and mini-cab companies, which can be pre-booked online or hailed on the street. Uber also operates in Manchester, which can be used via its mobile app. Uber is often cheaper than a taxi, especially when going to and from the airport.

Manchester is a great city for cycling, and many programs encourage bike use. There are many traffic-free cycle paths, as well as dedicated cycling lanes in busier areas. Look for Cycle Hubs around town to park your bike safely. Those who want to rent a bike while in Manchester can pick from numerous companies, but some of the most popular include Manchester Bike Hire and Brompton Dock .

Renting a Car

While some American travelers coming to the U.K. may not want to rent a car, it's easy to rent one when in Manchester, especially if you plan to leave the city for various day-trips. Car rental shops can be found both in the city center, including Hertz and Sixt, and at Manchester Airport, which has various rental companies to choose from. Be sure to add the GPS to your rental, as some of the roads in England can be confusing, and do a little preparation in terms of what various street signs and road markings mean. It's not recommended to drive around central Manchester, but a car is a good option if your itinerary includes other destinations around Northern England.

Tips for Getting Around Manchester

Manchester has a relatively easy public transportation system, but it can still be confusing, particularly if you're not used to big city public transport.

  • Holidays and weekends can mean limited transportation options. Roadworks and improvements to Metrolink often occur on the weekends, so check ahead of time if you need to get somewhere urgent. On Christmas, most public transportation shuts down completely, so opt for a taxi or Uber. Services are also limited on Boxing Day.
  • If you are traveling before or after a Manchester United or Manchester City game, the Metrolink and buses may be more crowded than usual. Try to plan your journey around the crowds of fans.
  • While Metrolink shuts down at night, many buses continue running, and there are also always taxis and Ubers available. Still, if you don't want to splurge on a taxi and want to stay as safe as possible, check the last tram time online, so you don't miss it.
  • When exploring the central part of Manchester, including the Northern Quarter and the museums, consider walking. Manchester isn't particularly rainy, and the temperature is usually moderate, so a good pair of shoes and Google Maps will get you a long way.

A Guide to Manchester's Public Transport System (2024)

Manchester is an ever-expanding city, and one way to explore it is through its efficient transport system. The city holds a fairly easy system for anyone who wants to explore the area, with buses, trams and trains that run until the later hours of the evening (from the early hours in the morning).

You can find more information about Manchester's transport system through Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

What makes Manchester's consistent transport system so efficient is its development of sustainable travel (a concept we know has been trending since 2010) , which is evident from the new  Bee Network  initiative.

To help our visitors find their way around Manchester, We’ve created a guide on Manchester’s transport system.

We’ll be looking at the locations of transport areas, how much they are, how to pay, any penalties, and more.

NOTE:  Prices on this list are correct  as of March 2024. For any changes, we will continuously update this post.

Tips On Boarding Transport

Before we leave you to your travels, we feel it's important to go over a few tips before you board your chosen transport.

Purchase a ticket before you get on

Avoid the hassle of penalties by purchasing a tram ticket, train pass or whichever you choose by buying a ticket before you board. Bus apps such as the Bee Network also provide cheaper bulk ticket prices when you purchase through the app, so options for cheaper travel are there.

Prepare for bus replacement services

In unnecessary times, you may find that certain tram or train lines are providing alternative transport options in form of bus replacement services. You can find all reported disruptions through the appropriate app (Trainline for trains, and the Bee Network app for the Metrolink or buses).

Keep all tickets by your person

A given tip, but in case you're unaware - ticket supervisors often go through each customer and ensures they've paid for their ride! Whether you've bought your pass online or physically, you will need to show your ticket to a supervisor.

The Bee Network

The Bee Network is a new transport initiative that combines both bus and tram travel tickets, making travel 20% cheaper. The network is composed of buses and trams, as well as cycling, and walking routes.

The introduction of this new transport system also highlights its move to zero-emission electric buses, with the goal of Bee Network being the one-stop shop for all local public transport and journeys in Greater Manchester.

What to expect

From 2023 until 2030, gradual but significant changes will be made to various bus routes to include the Bee Network's new routes. Residents and city visitors can expect various improvements such as earlier and later buses on some routes, greener transport systems, and a range of new tickets to make travel even more affordable for  buses and trams across Greater Manchester.

The new Bee Network app is now available to download from the  Google Play Store  and the  Apple App Store, which can be used to buy tickets, check times, and rate journeys from  September 24th.

Will prices become higher?

Single-operator bus tickets are still subject to regular price increases. However, the Bee Network's low fares have been extended until September 2024.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manchester has a network of buses that take passengers to various parts of the city and its greater areas.

The city's current bus network is efficient and with the new introduction of the Bee Network, various changes will be brought to bus services to and from Manchester city centre.

How much will buses cost?

All bus fare prices in Manchester will cost £2 for a single, and £5 for a day’s travel. For children (under the age of 16), the cost will be £1 capped and £2.50 for a day’s travel.

Passengers can also buy a week of unlimited bus travel in Greater Manchester which will cost £21 for adults, and £10.50 for children.

There is also the new Bee  AnyBus + Tram  ticket launching on the  24th of September . You can find more information here.

What about DayRider tickets?

A DayRider ticket from Stagecoach offers unlimited travel for a day, starting at £6.30 for a Manchester DayRider. Other tickets include PlusOne DayRider and Manchester Group DayRider. Visit the official Stagecoach App for more information.

How can passengers pay?

Most buses in Manchester allow on-board payments using contactless cards and devices, although it might be best to check each company’s policy around the payment.

The Bee Network app also allows you to buy new tickets that allow you to use both  buses and trams around Manchester.

You can pay with either cash or a card, but you can also pay for a week’s travel card (which you can upload to an igo card ).

What penalties are there?

There are no penalty fares for buses. If passengers fail to pay for their tickets, the bus will simply refuse to proceed with its route.

However, there will be penalties for vehicles passing through bus lanes, but these routes are clearly indicated so it will be easy to avoid them. The penalty is £30 if you pay within 14 days, £90 if the penalty is not paid within 28 days.

Are there any free buses?

shot-of-yellow-free-bus-around-manchester

There are free buses that travel through Manchester every 10 to 20 minutes. The city has three buses that offer free services, with varying schedules and routes that all begin and end at Piccadilly train station.

For more information on Manchester’s free public transport, please visit TFGM’s free-bus page .

The Metrolink is another way for visitors to get around the city centre and beyond. The advantage of the Metrolink is that it commonly diverts away from any traffic in the city centre, making travel much easier.

Of course there are some limitations in destinations and stops. But overall, the Metrolink is a reliable transport system that visitors should take advantage of. There are around 5 tram stations within Manchester city centre that passengers can access.

Where are the tram lines located?

Victoria tram line .

The Victoria tram line can be found on the following address:

Victoria Station Approach, Manchester M3 1WY

 Piccadilly Train Station

Piccadilly Tram Station is located within Piccadilly train station, shown on the address below:

Manchester M1 1RN

St. Peters Square

St. Peters Square can be found on the address below:

St Peter's Square, Manchester M1 5AN

How much does the tram cost?

Ticket prices will vary depending on what type of ticket you need and what zone you’re going to. We’ve created a quick chart below to indicate prices.

Within Zone 1/Zone 2/Zone 3/Zone 4

Two zones (1+2), two zones (2+3 or 3+4), three zones (1+2+3), three zones (2+3+4), zone 1 + 2 + 3 + 4.

For more information please visit TFGM’s website and price calculator to determine what your ticket price will be.

Passengers can pay with their contactless cards using smart readers at each station. Please note that adult fares will apply. You will be required to touch your card in and touch-out to allow our smart readers to indicate your journey.

It’s also important to note that you must touch-in and touch-out with the same type of payment. So if you use your contactless on your phone to touch-in, you must also use your phone to touch-out, and so on.

You will know when your card has been accepted when the smart reader reads “OK” with a green check mark. If a message displays with a cross and a red background, please try another contactless card.

What are the penalties?

If you haven’t touched in before starting your journey, the contactless standard fare of £45 will be automatically charged to the card or device.

If the inspector’s smart reader does not accept a card, you will be liable for up to £100.

You can read more on Metrolink’s conditions of carriage for full disclosure.

How is my ticket/payment checked when I’m on board?

An onboard investigator will be in your tram at all times. Please present the card you used during their checks.  So it's important that you purchase a tram ticket before you board.

How will the Bee Network affect trams?

The passes and tickets found on the Bee Network app entitle passengers to add trams to bus tickets altogether, which creates a cheaper alternative for public transports and more options for journeys.

What are the zones?

Zones indicate a specific area within Greater Manchester. Below is a chart that highlights the zones.

The network map is also available to view if you’re unsure where your zones are.

If you want to explore outside Greater Manchester, then boarding a train will be an ideal source of transport. Manchester has different train stations, including Manchester Piccadilly, Victoria and Oxford Road - all of which provide a train route to different areas of the country.

Trains are generally quite fast in reaching certain destinations, and you can find a ticket to your desired journey with ease using various apps on your phone, ticket offices or ticket booths found at all stations.

How much will you need to pay?

Ticket prices will vary widely depending on your destination and what railcards you have available.

shot-of-ticket-gates-with-security

Credit:Oscar Martin

You can get your tickets using an app called “ trainline ” which can quickly find prices for the place you want to visit straight from Manchester.

Are there any inspectors from my station to my stop?

There will always be an inspection regardless of where you stop, so please ensure that you have purchased a ticket before you board a train from Manchester!

What penalties are there?

If you fail to purchase a ticket during a train inspection, you will be liable for a penalty fare. Trainline’s penalty fare is £20.00 or twice the appropriate single fare from the station where you started your journey to the next stop (or the station you leave the train) - whichever is the greater amount.

Other Ways to Explore

While we’ve covered the main forms of transport around Manchester, there are other ways to explore the city with ease.

Lime Scooters

Lime E-scooters offer a fast, clean and affordable form of travel, and are scattered throughout the city centre (as well as other areas of Manchester). These scooters are supplied by Lime, which is an electric vehicle company that aims to create carbon-free transportation.

Simply download the “Lime” app, enter your details (you will be required to create an account) and scan the scooter you want to ride. Lime scooters can reach up to 17 miles per hour if you require something quick and easy to use!

There are two modes you can use, which are the standard and the “training” modes. Standard mode will make the scooter run normally, while training mode will reduce your max speed to 8mph.

Bee Active Cycle Hire

Cycle hire is another form of transport that visitors can easily access. With a number of bike hire stations across Manchester.

Similar to the E-scooters, you will be required to download an app to access the bikes. The app you need to download is called “Beryl”, and once you’re all set up, you can simply find a bike - unlock it- and start riding.

Manchester’s Public Transport System

The ways you can traverse Manchester is extensive and varied and is not as intimidating as it looks. It offers numerous ways to reach certain parts of Manchester city centre and beyond. The introduction of the Bee Network also indicates the potential for the city's transportation - moving to sustainable alternatives for transport, as well as cheaper ticket options for passengers.

If you’re travelling to Manchester and want accessible ways to explore the city, then the transport around this great city is your best bet!

(Unless you want to explore the city on foot ).
