Although there are several other companies that offer similar services in Barcelona, we’ll concentrate only on the Bus Turístic , since we consider it offers the best routes and timetable.

The hop on hop off Barcelona bus tour, aka the Bus Turistic , brings you to the city’s main attractions using just one ticket.

These bus tours make planning a thorough, quick sightseeing tour of Barcelona a breeze – so it’s no wonder 2,000,000+ passengers board every year.

Hop on Hop Off Barcelona Route

There are two routes on the Barcelona bus tour, and it breaks down like this:

  • Red Line (romance, views, and city rhythm): The legendary Passeig de Gracia with Casa Batllo and  La Pedrera , the city’s highest panoramic viewpoint at  Montjuic  Museum, Plaça Espanya , a romantic pass through Ciutadella Park and more.
  • Blue Line (main attractions): Plaça Catalunya , Spain’s most famous tourist attraction at Sagrada Familia , Casa Batllo, La Pedrera, Park Guell, the MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art,  Camp Nou Stadium , and  Mount Tibidabo .

With air conditioned buses running every five minutes you won’t be waiting long.

If you’re asking how long the hop on hop off Barcelona tour takes, expect both the red and blue lines to last 2 hours.

Barcelona Tourist Bus Timetable

The Barcelona Bus Turistic runs year around except Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve .

During high season expect to wait only 5 minutes between buses while in Barcelona in winter waits can push 25 minutes.

  • Every day from  9:00* to 19:00
  • Frequency: every  5-25 minutes

* The first tour bus departs from Plaça Catalunya at 9:00 so it’ll arrive and any subsequent stop a few minutes later, for example the first bus at Drassanes leaves at 9:06. Count about 5-6 minutes per stop.

Still unsure? Check out my post: is the Barcelona tourist bus is worth it?

Barcelona Hop on Hop off Plan

Being a Barcelona city tour veteran I’ve got an idea of how to best take advantage of a day pass on the Bus Turisitic.

First of all, you should grab the blue line but don’t get on the first stop in Plaça de Catalunya – it’s the busiest stop and especially in high season you might have to line up.

Furthermore, you’re just going to be coaxed off the bus at the first stop anyway since it’s impossible to resist the beautiful, trancadis-speckled mansion Casa Batllo.

The same goes for stop number two at La Pedrera, another of Gaudi’s amazing modernist mansions. You should get on at the La Pedrera stop – with the plan of riding it 12 minutes eastward to Sagrada Familia.

From here, the way I would plan the Barcelona tourist bus is the following:

  • Get off at Sagrada Familia and do their spectacular English guided tour
  • Get off at Park Guell and visit the Monumental Zone of the park
  • Get off at Camp Nou to discover the stadium, or at least grab a coffee to break it up
  • Get off at the Eixample stop, walk up Carrer d’Enric Granados and explore the area’s tapas bars
  • Head back to Placa de Catalunya and switch to the red line if you intend on carrying on.

This is the perfect five hour Barcelona tour, and should leave you a few hours to explore the panoramic views and seaside discoveries of the red line.

Don’t have enough time for the Barcelona bus Turístic in one day? Just book a second day, it’s only €10.00 more.

Related : Get a two hour walking tour of the Gothic Quarter for just 18 euro.

Barcelona Sightseeing Bus for Cruise Ship Passengers

For cruise ship passengers the Barcelona bus tour is a perfect way to see the city.

First things first, the shuttle from the dock will leave you at the Columbus Statue at Drassanes metro station. Here you’ll find a ticket window and a red line Bus Turístic stop .

Keep in mind your fellow cruise ship passengers will be doing the same thing so it’s always best to buy your hop on hop off bus tour tickets online to avoid lengthy lines. All you have to do then is board the bus!

On nice days make sure you grab a spot on the top deck of the bus – if there’s no room just get on and wait by the stairs for a couple minutes for someone to get off.

The red line bus will take you along the port with the beach and the famous two towers before looping back and taking you by Ciutadella Park and El Born . Get off at the Barri Gotic stop where you’ll be able to take some great shots of the Barcelona Cathedral .

Total time to here is about 90 minutes.

barcelona bus tour how much

Get back on the bus tour until the Casa Batllo  stop – here you can get off and wander the world-famous Passeig de Gracia  shopping area all the way up to dream house La Pedrera. Allow about an hour for this.

The Pedrera stop connects with the blue line which you’ll take to the Sagrada Familia: if you’ve bought your Sagrada Familia tour tickets online  you’ll skip the annoying lines and be in and out in about 90 minutes.

Get back on the blue line for 10-15 minutes more and you’ll be at Park Guell .

Taking in the magnificent views of the city from here should take about an hour or so. Get back on the bus for a trip to some amazing Barcelona FC football matches  at Barcelona’s famous stadium Camp Nou .

From here you’ll take Diagonal down into the Raval neighbourhood and eventually end up back at  Plaça Catalunya .

From Plaça Catalunya walk down La Rambla to your point of origin: the Columbus Statue. From here you can get your shuttle back to the cruise ship. This last part of the trip can be done in two hours or less.

Again, with the Sagrada Familia tour and a little lunch break you’re looking at about seven hours but if you’re not it can be done comfortably in five.

Barcelona Tourist Bus Tips

As a veteran of the hop on hop off Barcelona bus tour, having gone on it with various visitors over the last 10 years, I can share the following pearls of wisdom.

  • Buy your bus tour tickets online in advance to make sure you can walk right now
  • If you got them bring your own headphones for better audio guide sound.
  • Take your bus tour on the first day there because it helps plan the rest of your trip.
  • Bring a light jacket if you’re not fond of wind.
  • Start your Barcelona city tour early to avoid crowds and get the full value of the tickets.
  • Don’t start at major stops like Sagrada Familia and Plaça Catalunya because there are big lines. Always look to board one stop before or after (buses never depart full as per company policy so the following stops can pick up new riders).
  • If you can’t get a seat on the top deck sit as close as possible to the stairway downstairs to queue for the next seat
  • If you only have a one day ticket try and avoid Friday (it’s cruise ship day).
  • Sun cream and water are an absolute necessity in summer.

Barcelona Bus Turistic FAQ

Yes, the Barcelona Bus Turistic serves virtually the entire city: it is split up across two different lines (red and blue) and more than 30 stops including all major attractions like Sagrada Familia, Camp Nou, Park Guell, the Gothic Quarter, Montjuic, and much more.

A complete tour of both the red and blue lines should take around 2 hours. That said, time should be factored in for whatever stops you make. A typical bus tour of Barcelona to see the sites can easily take up a full day.

Single day tickets cost €31.00 for adults, €28.00 for seniors and students, and €18.00 for children. Two day Barcelona bus tour tickets cost €42.00 (adults), €39.00 (seniors and students), and €23.00 (children).

If you buy your Barcelona tourist bus tickets on site, there are no bus tour discounts. However, in booking your bus tickets online you can save €2.00 per adult ticket.

The Bus Turistic runs every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

I high season there is just a five minute wait between buses, while low season can take up to 20 minutes between buses.

The Barcelona bus tour hours are as follows:

  • Every day from 9:00am (*first bus departs from Plaza Catalunya) to 7:00 pm
  • Frequency: every 5-25 minutes

No, the days must be used up on consecutive days.

Yes, as of 2023 the hop on hop off bus ticket is valid for hours, not days.

No, unfortunately refunds cannot be made once tickets are purchased.

Yes. Keep in mind though that wheelchair customers will not be able to access the upper deck.

Yes, but now the whole way. Take the blue line to the Tramvia Blau-Tibidabo stop and change for the Tramvia Blau or Bus 196 to get to the Funicular de Tibidabo.

  • October 22, 2019 at 3:44 pm Susan Hi Ash My daughter and I are staying at Carrer d'En Fontrodona. We wish to use the hop on hop off bus. If we get on the bus at the Colom-Museu stop, what time would the first bus leave from there please. I am just trying to work out timings so we can plan our itinerary. We plan on getting the two day pass and getting off to explore at each stop.We will be getting the pass for a Saturday and Sunday in July. I am wondering if we would be better to do the blue line on the Saturday taking in to account things being closed on Sundays, and Montjuic Castle being free on Sundays after 3pm. I'd also like to tie things in with seeing La Sardana in Cathedral Square on Sunday. Then just to work out when to book Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo etc. Your thoughts would be appreciated thankyou. I am devouring your site and thank you for a previous reply regarding Aerobus. It's very helpful having a local give inside information. Reply

Hop On Hop Off Barcelona

The Official Barcelona Bus Tour

Tickets & Prices

The Hop On Hop Off Bus offers two different ticket options, both of which let you hop on and hop off the bus as many times as you want during our operation hours, which are about 9:00 am to 7:00 pm in the winter and 8:00 pm in the summer.

Adult tickets cost €30,00 for one day and €40,00 for two days. If you purchase the bus tickets online you´ll receive a discount and you only pay €28,00 for the 1-day ticket and €38,00 for a 2-day ticket.

2-day tickets offer the best value, costing only €19,00 per day (a 1-day ticket costs €28,00).

Which option you choose will ultimately depend on how quickly you want to tour Barcelona.

Pricing Table

Children three years old and younger ride for free! Children rates are for children ages four to twelve.

Choose a ticket

It is possible to do all three tourist bus routes on the same day. The Blue and Red Routes take about two hours each, and the Green Route* takes about forty minutes.

You can change buses as many times as you want, without having to pay again.

If you are only in Barcelona for a day and you want to see the entire city and everything it has to offer, a one day ticket on Bus Turistic is a great way to do that. Of course, in order to get in every stop on the routes, you will not be able to spend very much time at each stop.

If you have more than one day to spend in Barcelona, we recommend the two-day ticket. During the two consecutive days of your ticket, you can get on and off the bus as many times as you want, spend as much time as you want at each site. You can start at any stop and stop at any stop. Two days gives you a little bit more time to soak in everything Barcelona really has to offer.

Both the Blue and Green Routes overlap with the Red Route at least once, so it is easy to switch onto another route, once you’ve seen everything you want to see on the first route.

* The Green Line is available from April to November.

Hop on – Hop off Buses in Barcelona

barcelona bus tour how much

The diversity of Barcelona leaves you with the challenge of how to get the most out of the city. With the Hop on Hop off Bus, you have the perfect solution, for a day or two of convenient sightseeing.

There are two of these tourist buses in Barcelona: the official Barcelona Bus Turístic and the Gray Line / City Sightseeing affiliated Barcelona City Tour.

In 2022 both operators of the buses changed from a calendar day system (1 day or 2 days) to an hourly system (24h or 48h). So with these new ticket types, you have got the advantage of starting your sightseeing day in the afternoon or even in the evening if you like.

Hop On Hop Off Both Buses in Barcelona

If you are on a very tight budget though, then the Barcelona Card will offer you free transport on the city’s bus and metro network as well as discounted admissions at a lower price.

The advantage of the hop on hop off bus tours is that they are a combination of a guided city tour and independent sightseeing. Whereas going by subway or public bus often is more hassle than enjoyment, on the sightseeing buses travelling from one attraction to the next on the open deck is a great experience itself.

You can either plan your desired journey upfront or hop on the bus, get inspired by the audioguide or the routes and make plans while riding through the city.

By stopping right in front of most major landmarks, the busses will solve all your logistical issues on a great sightseeing day trip.

1.2 Barcelona Bus Turistic and Barcelona City Tour routes on a combined map

2.1 prices & routes, 3.1 prices & routes, 4. general tips, recommendations & advice, 5. hop on hop off bus & harbour cruise, 6. book online with a 10% discount, 7.1 what if i want to get off the bus, 7.2 what do the buses look like, 7.3 how long do the buses run, 1. what do both hop on hop off bus tours have in common.

Both the purple-green painted Bus Turistic and the red Barcelona City Tour cover all the city attractions with their route network. In fact, 26 of their 35-40 stops are the same for both options.

The majority of these stops are on two main routes and you can change from one route to the other on several combined stops. All routes are only driven in one direction, so if you miss a stop you either need to walk or you would have to complete the whole round, which takes around 2h30 on the main routes.

With your ticket, you can use the different routes of a bus company without limits, but you cannot use the other company’s buses!

Since both companies are regulated by the Barcelona city council, they offer precisely the same price!

The bus fleets both feature open-top buses with electric retractable roofs so they can be covered in the event of rain.

Both buses offer mobile tickets for travellers’ convenience. No need to worry about printing tickets with these two companies.

A discount booklet, map, audioguide, and headphones are all part of the package when booking with these bus companies. The audioguides feature multiple languages for travellers to learn about this unique city in their native tongue.

Customers can enjoy free Wifi onboard the buses, which is very convenient for those of you who do not have data plans abroad.

Children under four years old travel for free, which makes both of the bus options great for families as well as your wallet.

If you have a disability, require handicap access, or need assistance, both buses are handicap accessible for your comfort.

Blue Line = Bus Turistic / Red Line = Barcelona City Tour

2. What is unique about Barcelona Bus Turistic?

Bus Turistic offers three routes running in the summer. During winter, Bus Turistic runs on two routes.

The two main routes (blue and red) take about 2h30 to complete, in case you do not get off the bus. In summer, the additional green route takes about 45min.

On peak days they operate more than 60 buses, so on average the waiting times are a bit less than on the Barcelona City Tour bus, but there are more people using this service.

This bus tour covers an extra area in the northwest of Barcelona. What does this entail? In comparison to the Red Bus it has additional stops at Teleferic de Montjuic, Gracia, Sarria and Monestir de Pedralbes. If you have a particular interest in any of these areas within the city, then the Bus Turistic is a better choice.

Bus Turistic has 37 unique stops.

For those of you who speak Norwegian and/or Turkish, this company offers these languages in the audioguides.

This tour costs 27€ for a 24h ticket if you book it online (thanks to a 10% online discount). The price on the bus is 30€.

3. What is unique about Barcelona City Tour?

The Red Hop on Hop off bus has two routes operating in the city of Barcelona.

Compared to the Bus Turístic, the average waiting time is slightly longer. This is due to their company offering fewer buses, however, there are typically fewer people on the buses.

This bus has 32 unique stops on its two routes included in the journey.

Speak Hindi? No problem, the audioguide includes it in its language portfolio.

Like the Bus Turistic, the tickets cost 27€ for 24h thanks to a 10% online discount. The price on the bus is 30€.

Bring water. Staying hydrated is vital, especially in the summer months. Even if you choose to be on the bus the entire time, it is long enough that you will get thirsty. If you do hop off and walk, all the more reason to drink plenty of water.

Buying tickets in advance is the best way to avoid waiting in line. Purchasing your tickets in advance is advantageous for both bus companies regardless of the price differences.

Pack your sunscreen. The lovely sea breeze from the top of the bus feels fantastic on your face in the hot summer months, however, this does not offset the strong UV rays. The sun here is intense. Make sure to wear sunscreen and reapply. Nobody wants a sunburn during their Mediterranean adventure!

7. General FAQs

Feel particularly moved by the audioguide or compelled to stay longer in a particular area? No problem! With these bus tours, travellers can hop off and explore further.

When you feel you are ready to hop back on and enjoy the ride, it is simple and easy to re-join the tour at your convenience. The buses run in 5 – 15 minute intervals (depending on the season).

This bus is a double-decker; therefore, all travellers can find a comfortable spot for their journey.

Barcelona is known for its sunshine. Soak up plenty of vitamin D on the roof of the bus, which is open-air and features spectacular views of the city. If on the rare occasion it is raining, no worries, there is a roof cover when needed.

If you choose to go with the Red Bus, you are looking for a red-coloured bus; the Bus Turistic comes with a purple-green design.

Both buses start operating at 9 am and end around 7 pm during winter and 8 pm during summer.

Comprehensive in nature, each route lasts around two – to two and a half hours, thus you walk away feeling like you have not missed anything.

The Hop on Hop off Bus boasts multi-language audioguides which share in-depth knowledge about what you will see and what is right in front of you.

Simply hopping on these bus tours unlocks Barcelona, as you travel through neighbourhoods and take in the various sites.

I want to buy 14 tickets 2 days Bus tickets as individual may hop on hop off differently, do I need to buy online one by one? If buy as a group, do we need to go all along everytime ?

Hi William,

You can make one reservation for your group and you will receive individual mobile tickets for each participant. So you dont need to travel together all the time.

Cheers, Christian

Just bus stop by cruise terminal

Hi Catherine,

The bus cannot stop right at the cruise terminal, because there are actually 7 different cruise terminals at three different piers in the port of Barcelona.

However, from each cruise terminal you can take the 10-15min ride on the port bus for around 4€ up to the Columbus Statue. Here you can hop on the next bus every 5-10 minutes.

We are arriving via Norwegian Cruise line and will be disembarking the cruise when we arrive. Is it possible to get on the bus at the port and bring our luggage with us and get off near our hotel?

Yes, this will be possible. There is space on the bottom floor of the bus if you have got some luggage.

Hope this helped,

Howlong drive the bus from plaza catalunya to sagrada familia ?

Hi Fabiola,

On the Bus Turistic from Plaza Catalunya it is 3 stops to Sagrada Familia. That will be 15-20 minutes approximately.

The red City Tour bus takes a different route that from Plaza Catalunya first goes down to the port and the beach before going up to Sagrada Familia. So with this bus calculate around 1h (winter route) and 1h30 (summer route).

Best regards,

We are coming to Barcelona in March & want to see Sagrada Familia, Park Guell & Picasso’s museum. Which of the hop on hop off buses would be better? We have 2 days & staying at the Catalonia 505 in Muntaner. Do any if the buses stop close by?

For Sagrada Familia, Park Guell & Picasso’s museum both of the buses have the same stops.

From your hotel it will be a 10 minute walk to the next stop. You can actually check the direction, by putting in the hotel name or address onto the google map of the bus routes: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1ULBcMl6KdVNB1zKChvx5dHhBk25wQlua&usp=sharing

Just select the next stop on the map and click the icon for directions.

do I get discount with Barcelona card? if yes how much?

Hi Ekaterine,

Yes, you get a discount of 20% on the Barcelona Bus Turistic with the Barcelona Card.

Saludos, Christian

Can I take my suitcases on the bus and get off at the nearest stop that you have to the cruise terminal since I will embark on the MSC cruise.

Hi Geliani,

Yes, you can take your suitcases and then get off at the Columbus Statue at the bottom of Rambla. From there it is 10 minutes with the Port Bus (4€) to the cruise terminals.

I do want to use your services; however, I want to stay in the area of Las Ramblas (I think?) Can you kindly tell me what areas to look for (4) star hotels near Las Ramblas and near Hop On Hop Off Buses? Thank you!

There are many hotels in the area, I would look in the Eixample neighborhood around Passeig de Gracia and Placa Catalunya – there you are close to both, Rambla and Hop on Hop off bus stops.

Hotel Indigo for example is very nice, but there are more than 50 4-star hotels in the area.

I will visit Barcelona during March 23-26, 2020. Will stay in Barcelona Princess. Which Hop On Hop Off bus stop I will be close to?

Hi Quamrun,

There is a stop of both hop on hop off buses right infront of your hotel at the roundabout at the bottom of Rambla del Prim, however, this stop is only operational in summer, starting 29th of March for the red bus city tour and 3rd of April for the Bus Turistic.

So unless you have got some flexibility to change the dates of your stay, you would need to take the yellow metro line to the city centre (Plaza Urquinaona) to get on the buses at Plaza Catalunya.

Thank you. This is helpful.

I have few more questions. I guess i can buy bus/metro ticket in any metro station. Is there any tram line/stoppage close to Barcelona Princess? How much it would cost to take a taxi to go Plaza Catalunya from the hotel? Thanks once again.

Yes, correct, you can buy a metro ticket in the station (cash or card payment), the price per ride is 2,40€. There is a station 3 blocks from your hotel, just ask reception for directions.

A taxi will cost you approximately 10-15€ to Plaza Catalunya.

We will be staying in the Jazz Hotel. How will we get to the bus stop. Only for two and half days. Which bus is near and best to see all that is possible.

Hi Elize, please take a look at our google map with the routes and stops. Just enter your address and the next stop and it will show you the shortest way to walk: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1ULBcMl6KdVNB1zKChvx5dHhBk25wQlua&ll=41.38621560608736%2C2.1657953144180375&z=18

From Hotel Jazz you will have the next stop a 2-minute walk at Plaza Catalonia.

We will be staying at the Nobu Hotel in the Eixample district, April 1-2, 2023. Which stop is the closest on which bus line to our hotel?

Hi Mike, you can see all stops on our google map above. If you enter your hotel name you can see the next stop nearby and it will even show you the route to walk there.

In your case it is very easy, the stop at Sants train station is literally just in front of your hotel!

Which line stops at the Sants train station? Barcelona Turistic or Barcelona City Tour? I couldn’t tell by entering hotel name on the map!

They both stop there, just choose the one you prefer.

Can you purchase your ticket from any stop? We are staying at U232 and want to walk to the nearest stop to stat our journey.

Hi Sue, Please use this map to see the closest stop to your hotel: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1ULBcMl6KdVNB1zKChvx5dHhBk25wQlua&ll=41.38949718218621%2C2.1664949999999905&z=13

At the top just click on the search icon and enter your hotel name. It will show you your hotel right on the map with the bus stops, so you can pick the most convenient stop for you.

It is possible to buy your ticket at the queue at each stop, but we recommend to buy the tickets online. It just takes 2min on your mobile, you actually get a 10% discount and you can jump on the bus right away.

URGENT REPLY NEEDED !

Hello Christian, My dad & I just landed in Barcelona on April 18th and checking ou on April 21st. I’m sooooooooo confused on which buses to take, and which routes (which colors) to take in order to see as much as possible of this city ?

Can you help me please ? Thanks, Tania

The buses have the same price, so if you do not have any other preference, then just look for the one that has the closest stop to your hotel.

Once you have decided on the bus, just get the tickets on your mobile (for the 10% discount and to hop on the bus right away at any stop) within 5min while having breakfast or while walking to the stop. For the next two days there is still enough availability.

Enjoy the tour!

What are the dates of the winter season. We will be there oct 19/21 2023

Hi Christian We are in Barcelona 9-11 Sept and plan to buy 48hr tickets for hop on hop off. I cannot find the bus stop on goolge maps for Park Guell, and from the look of the City Sightseeing tourist map, it looks a long way from the park entrance. As one of our group has mobility problems, would it be possible to get a taxi from the stop 6 to the park entrance? Is there a taxi rank in the vicinity? Thank you

Hi Shirley,

Yes, it is indeed a fairly steep 10min walk from the stop to Parc Guell. There is no taxi rank nearby, but you will easily be able to flag one from the street.

Hi Christian,

I was wondering, are there any restaurants at any of the stops where my group can stop for breakfast or lunch? Thanks!

It is difficult to recommend anything specific here because plenty of restaurants are close to any of the stops.

Maybe doing a stop in Placa Catalunya is a good idea because of the wide variety you have there, and also you will be able to access both of the lines after your break.

Another good option will be the stop at the seaside in Port Olimpic. Here, you also find plenty of restaurants, and the beach invites for a relaxing break from the bustling city life.

Hi Christian. My group of 12 seniors citizens will arrive on NCL’s Viva in Barcelona on 11/10/23. Will there be a pick up bus stop near the cruise terminal? If not, how do we meet up with the nearest bus stop and what would that cost? Regards, Gene

Hi Gene, The closest stop from the cruise terminal is at the Columbus statue, at the entrance to the port. To get there you need to take the port bus from the cruise terminal (10min ride, 4€ per person). Alternatively you can also take taxis (around 20€ each) or walk around 20-30min (depending on which terminal your ship is docked.

Hello, will be in Barcelona in June, 2024. I am leaning toward Bus Touristic. I noticed some road closures on Google maps near Gotic area where we are staying . Is there an alternative route the bus is taking? Also, do the buses only run in one direction so you can go back one or two stops if you wanted? And, if I buy a 48 hour ticket does that time run consecutively or can I do 24 hours on a Thursday then the next 24 hours starting Saturday? Thank you! The information in this site comparing the two bus lines has been so helpful.

The buses do only run in one direction on the route, so you cannot go back. Some roads are blocked for public traffic, but the buses can pass through with a special permit.

The tickets now are valid for hours instead of calendar days, but the hours need to be consecutive. So for 24h starting Thursday and 24h starting Saturday you need to buy separate tickets.

Hope that helped!

No more bus tours for China's rich millennials — they're seeing the world on their own

  • Rich Chinese millennials are opting for solo travel, the latest status symbol.
  • It counters the organized group-tour travel of their parent's generation.
  • They're looking for more immersive, meaningful travel experiences that let them escape hustle culture.

Insider Today

Rich millennials in China are experiencing world travel in a very different way from their parents.

The older generation was the first group to benefit from the country opening up to world tourism, but the industry was still in its infancy. Therefore, organized tour groups were the go-to option for those with the money to spend on this new middle-class pursuit.

These tours offered a safer and more accessible way to explore new destinations, Elisa Harca, CEO of consultancy firm Red Ant Asia, previously told Business Insider.

But younger generations — millennials and Gen Z — have grown up in a world that's much more open to them. For those who can afford the luxury, they spent their youth traveling with their parents and studying abroad.

And it's meant that now they want to travel alone or in smaller groups of friends, as it emerges as the latest luxury status symbol for younger people in China .

New technology has made solo travel much less daunting

"They're a lot more used to being tourists,'' Jack Porteous of China-focused consultancy firm Tong Global told Business Insider.

Many people have a more advanced level of English, and the availability of real-time translation apps means traveling further afield to places in Europe is much less daunting for this younger cohort.

The rise of social media platforms for travel has also spurred the accessibility of solo travel. Experts pointed to the Xiaohongshu , China's Instagram-like app, as one of the main resources for travel recommendations.

Luxury travelers, especially those in their 20s and 30s, are relying on Xiaohongshu to make decisions on booking hotels, flights, and restaurants when they travel, Sally Maier-Yip, founder of China-focused communications consultancy 11K Consulting, told BI.

In 2022, the app boasted an estimated 200 million monthly users, mainly young women, seeking product recommendations, lifestyle advice, and how-to videos .

Related stories

Porteous explained that the site is full of content about how to "live like a local" in different destinations worldwide.

This allows people to find more authentic travel recommendations for themselves rather than leaning on travel experts.

Traveling for deep personal fulfillment

It's not just about ticking off bucket-list destinations; well-traveled younger people are looking for deeper meaning in the experiences they're spending their money on.

"Immersive travel experiences spanning four to eight days are gaining traction," Maier-Yip, told BI. She said this indicates a growing appetite for trips centered on fulfillment and personal happiness.

"Travel has also taken on a new role as a form of self-exploration and definition," Porteous of Tong Global added.

Visiting unique, off-the-beaten-track locations is the next frontier for those looking for luxurious travel experiences.

Porteous points to the rise of glamping in China and holidays focussed on outdoor activities, such as horse riding in Inner Mongolia, as examples of these new immersive experiences.

China's grueling work culture means younger people are looking for a break

There's a growing trend of young people taking early-career gaps , loudly celebrating quitting their jobs to go traveling, he added.

Chinese employers are known for their notorious "996" work culture, which demands workers clock in from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week.

But younger generations are becoming more inclined to reject this.

Viral acts of rebellion such as wearing " gross clothes " to the office, or just giving up and " lying flat " have all been ways that they've been going against the status quo.

Taking time off work to travel solo is one example of how younger Chinese people have a different view of their life trajectory versus their parent's generation.
