Visit Negombo – A Complete Travel Guide You Need To Read

Negombo is a coastal city about 30 kilometers north of  Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo . It is also conveniently located less than 10 kilometers away from the Sri Lanka Bandaranaike International Airport. If you’re traveling to Sri Lanka , you will most probably pass by Negombo. Whether you stop by and visit the city as soon as you land in Sri Lanka or as you’re leaving the country is up to you.

I spent the last days of my trip to Sri Lanka in Negombo to relax after an amazing motorcycle road trip. If you’re planning on renting a vehicle (whether it’s a car, a motorcycle, or a tuk-tuk) to move around the country, you should do it in Negombo. You’ll have your vehicle available as soon as you get to the city, and you can return it before you head to the airport to leave Sri Lanka.

Without further ado, let’s start our tour of the city with these helpful transportation and accommodation tips.

How To Get To Negombo

How to get to Negombo from the airport

As you can see, you can go to Negombo directly from the airport. You can get there by tuk-tuk for example for about 800 rupees ($4.5). The trip lasts between 15 and 30 minutes depending on traffic jams. You can also take a taxi there for around 1500 rupees ($8.5). But if you’re looking for the cheapest option, just take bus #240. The ticket is ridiculously cheap, it’s only 50 rupees (30 cents)! Don’t expect comfort and luxury for that rate though.

How to get to Negombo from Colombo

If you’re traveling from Colombo to Negombo, the most convenient option would be the train. You’ll have to go to the Colombo Fort train station and then embark for an hour trip to Negombo. Again, tickets are really cheap. One-way tickets cost between 40 and 70 rupees (20 and 40 cents) depending on your ticket class. Get the best class you can find, you won’t find cheaper prices elsewhere!

Where to stay in Negombo

It would be great to book a hotel outside of the city center and close to the beach which is a little further north. For smaller budgets, you can book at the Winston Sea Front Villa which, as its name suggests, is right in front of the beach.

Prices are really affordable and you’ll simply get what you pay for. The staff is also very helpful and you will have the opportunity to meet a lot of people, locals and foreign travelers alike.

If you can afford better accommodation, try the Heritance Negombo hotel which is one of the most beautiful hotels in the region. It’s a beachfront hotel that has great swimming pools.

As you can see, the setting is utterly and the price per night is not so expensive considering the quality of the hotel’s services. You can enjoy the Heritance ‘s seven restaurants as well as its fully-equipped gym.

Where to eat in Negombo

If you’re looking for a nice restaurant in Negombo, go to  this area . You can find great restaurants selling local dishes or also western food to eat while enjoying the sea view. Try to go there at sunset and enjoy the show!

The 5 Best Things To Do In Negombo

You’re all set to go to Negombo, let’s check out the city’s best attractions together! They are marked on this map so you can have a general idea of where you’re going:

1. The Beach

As you can see, the main attraction in Negombo is the beach and all the activities that go with it. It is not really crowded so you can sit back and enjoy the wide stretch of sand. You should also be able to spot some fishing boats around. At about noon, some of them head back to the shore while fishing continues until the end of the day for others. So you’ll get to see the boats disembarking on the beach, one after the other, bringing back the day’s catch.

When you arrive in Sri Lanka, you will probably feel that it is really hot during the day, especially during the dry season (December to March). It’s probably better to avoid swimming at noon and don’t forget your sunscreen!

2. The Fish Market

Negombo is a fishing village, so the fish market is a must-visit attraction. Try to go there as early as possible so you don’t miss out on the busy atmosphere! 6 AM would be perfect but you can also visit it later. You will first find the spice market where the famous cinnamon sticks, also called Ceylon (former name of Sri Lanka) cinnamon, are sold. Cinnamon is originally from Sri Lanka by the way!

Then, you will find many stalls with fish of all kinds. Auctions are held there to buy and sell fish and even if you don’t understand much of it most of the time, the atmosphere is really nice and you’d almost want to join the game and buy some fish!

If you leave the market and get to the seaside, you should be able to see the fishing boats off the coast.

You will also see a crowd of people working on getting the fish out of the nets, on the beach. Some are sold at the market but the smaller ones are sun-dried on the spot.

3. St Mary’s Church

As you may know, Sri Lanka is a multi-faith country, and Catholicism is one of the many religions practiced there. Catholics make up about 7% of the total Sri Lankan population, so there are many churches all over the country. One of the most beautiful churches I really recommend you visit in Negombo is Saint Mary’s Church, located not too far from the market.

4. The Lagoon

As you have probably seen on the map above, there is a huge lagoon south of the city of Negombo. The landscapes are beautiful and the wildlife is rich, with birds and fish of all kinds. There are fishermen who would love to take you on a boat trip around the lagoon! You can book this tour at your hotel, or at an on-site agency, or book it online .

5. Angurukaramulla Temple

Are you ready to enter the demon’s lair? The entrance is very impressive and reminds me of the entrance to the Elephant Caves of the Goa Goja temple in Ubud , Bali . Very similar, right?

This resemblance shouldn’t be surprising actually, because this demon represents Kala, one of the important characters of Hindu mythology. He is the god of time and is also associated with destruction and death. This is not necessarily a negative aspect in Hinduism because life is made of cycles and there is no real end. That’s the reincarnation principle, broadly put.

There are also many representations of Kala in the temples of Bagan , Myanmar , or in the Angkor temples in Siem Reap , Cambodia . If that’s the case, what’s this beautiful 6-meter high Buddha statue doing in a Hindu temple, you say? It is quite common to mix religious references, and so mixing Buddhism with Hinduism, Taoism ( China ) or Shintoism ( Japan ) is not an issue in Asia.

While visiting the Angurukaramulla temple, don’t forget to go inside the buildings, especially inside the pagoda on the right of the main temple. You will find mural paintings there that illustrate scenes from the English colonization period.

You will also find another pagoda upstairs which is quite surprising, to be honest. Outstanding structure!

Negombo Sri Lanka (Sinhala: මීගමුව ; Tamil: நீர்கொழும்பு) is a bustling city close to the Bandaranaike International Airport; and second largest city in the Western province, after  Colombo . Located at the lagoon-mouth, Negombo is a major tourist destination with an old, large and thriving fishing industry.

The beach here is quiet and peaceful, and the sight of the fisher folk out at sea on their oruwas (outrigger canoes) is a particularly charming sight. It is not always safe to swim here, but diving enthusiasts can explore the wreck of a World War II British cargo plane in nearby Marawila. A boat trip winding through the lush mangroves down the Dutch Canal or Muthurajawela Marsh will reward you with sightings of monitor lizards and flocks of migrant birds.

The Munneswaram Hindu temple is 20kms away, and can be combined with a tour of the famous fish market and the seaside town of Chilaw. The larger hotels in the area also have equipment and facilities for water sports such as windsurfing, sailing and skiing.

History of Negombo

The Sinhala name for Negombo,  Mīgamuva  (මීගමුව), means ‘mass of bees’. It is believed that a swarm of bees settled on a boat, and the place was named where the boat was pulled ashore.

Around the seventh & eighth centuries, the Muslim Arabs (Moors) who dominated the East-West trade routes, settled in Negombo and started trading in cinnamon. The best cinnamon in the world originated from Sri Lanka and the most prized variety came from the coastal stretch along Negombo. In the early 1500s the Portuguese grabbed the coastal areas as well as the Cinnamon trade from the Moors and built a fort for protection. The Dutch managed to oust the Portuguese in 1644 and improved the fort and fortified the town further. The British gained the town without resistance in 1796.

Many local Karavas converted to Catholicism during the Portuguese rule. As a result, the majority in Negombo and surrounding coastal areas are now Catholics. Negombo has an old world atmosphere with many Portuguese-era Catholic churches and forts. It is affectionately called ‘little Rome’ due to the numerous Catholic churches and Roman Catholic residents. A fine example is St.Mary’s church in the town centre.

Negombo – Points of Interest

Negombo fish market (fishing village).

The Negombo Fish Market (Fishing Village) also known as the Lellama by the locals is located across the lagoon bridge, near the Old Dutch Gate. The large open air fish market is the second largest in the country.

The Negombo fish market is a microcosm of the local fishery industry. It gives you an unpretentious insight into the local fisher community. The market is loud, vibrant and smells like fish!

You will be able to witness the fishermen in hundreds of boats bringing in their days catch. See how the wholesalers and restaurateurs trade and watch the packing & loading of fish for distribution across the country as well as for export – worldwide. The retail area is a bustling hive of activity – with customers negotiating prices with mom and pop fish vendors.

The best time to visit the Lellama is at dawn, around 6:00 am to really understand the volume and scope of the operation. You will see a multitude of boats full of fresh fish coming in and lowering their sails. The smaller fishing boats usually come first, followed by the larger vessels. You can see their nets being pulled ashore and the catch shaken out of nets to be cleaned, scaled, gutted, salted and dried in the sun. You’ll see the loading of fish on small-time fish vendors’ bikes, who in turn sell their fish to consumers.

The abundance of seafood in every imaginable shape, form, color and size is simply mind-boggling. You’ll see deep-sea; open water and reef fish from the ocean – along with tiger shrimp, prawn, lobster & crab from the lagoon. The profusion of fish includes herring, giant tuna, sea bass, barracuda, skipjack, mackerel, salmon, marlin, mullet, swordfish,  sailfish, eels, shark as well as squid (calamari) & cuttlefish – the variety will astound you.

This is a local market, by the locals for the locals – you as a visitor will not be bothered. However, you need to be mindful that this is a place of work – people are busy.

The fisher folk are loud, colorful and friendly. They will oblige by explaining the fishing process as well as pose for a photo, or take one of you holding a fish. The fish sold here is really cheap. Indulge yourself and buy some seafood – you might be even able to give it to your hotel chef to cook.

Do note that visiting the Negombo Fish Market is not for those with a weak stomach. The smell of fish and sight of blood can be overwhelming. Be prepared, wear strong waterproof shoes. Boat Ride – Dutch Canal & Muthurajawela Marsh

The Dutch canal flows through the city of Negombo onto the Muthurajawela Marsh. Known as the  ‘Swamp of Royal Treasure’ , Muthurajawela borders the Negombo Lagoon to the south and Kelani river to the north. The one and a half hour boat ride takes you along the Dutch Canal, through the marsh onto the lagoon. Along the way you will be able to fill your camera with images of water monitors, crocodiles, Brahminy kites, monkeys and a host of other fish, reptiles, birds and small mammals.

Muthurajawela Marsh is said to be the island’s largest saline peat bog.  The marsh bears a staggering variety of flora and fauna. About 192 flora and 209 fauna, excluding 102 species of birds have been discovered. Some indigenous floras and faunas have also been found in Muthurajawela marsh. Visitors may see water birds such as herons, egrets in abundance in the lagoon and the marsh. It is also a residence for 40 different species of fish, of which 15 falls under the category of indigenous fauna. The slender Loris a nocturnal animal listed as endangered, can be seen on a rare occasion.

The Muthurajawela marsh was declared sanctuary by the government in 1996 due to its vast bio diversity. Visitors are assisted by the Muthurajawela marsh centre. The centre educates people about the importance of Muthurajawela. The staff at Muthurajawela marsh centre is available everyday except Monday; from 7.00 a.m to 6.00 p.m.  A boat ride service is provided for visitors to travel through the marsh and lagoon. The center offers well-trained guides. You will not only be able to travel on water, but even walk on the land and view the natural greenery. Early mornings or evenings are the best times to view, Muthurajawela. Late mornings and afternoons should be avoided due to the  harsh tropical sun.

Festivals and Events in Negombo

Duwa passion play.

The fishing village of ‘Duwa’ – is an island connected to Negombo by a causeway. Duwa is famed for the country’s oldest and best known Passion Play. This is a dramatic enactment of the passion of Jesus Christ. The Duwa passion play is one of the most famous Catholic pageant in Sri Lanka with a history of over 400 years. The pageant involves the entire village and is staged throughout the Christian Holy Week of Easter. Many villages around Negombo now conduct elaborate passion plays with over 250 actors, some even include a number of popular local cinema and TV stars.

The ruins of the old Dutch fort, and a Dutch cemetery and green are near the mouth of the lagoon.

Fisherman’s festival

A Fisherman’s festival is held in Negombo around late July. The catch includes a wide variety of deep ocean fish including shark, as well other reef fish. You will also find other seafood like lobster, crab and prawns from the lagoon.

Negombo is a quiet town in the western coastal area of Sri Lanka , with a tourist strip to the north on Jetwing Beach. Its key attraction is its proximity to the international airport. Formerly the haunt of budget travellers, rising hotel rates and luxury resorts mean it now attracts tourists for its yellow, sandy beaches and its relaxing and friendly environment. There are a few other tourist attractions, and decent opportunities for diving and water sports.

The 100-km-long canal network running through the city is still used, and outrigger canoes and modern water-craft ply this route daily, for trade and tourist purposes. Remains of colonization include the Dutch fort built in 1672, as well as centuries-old Portuguese and Dutch houses, administrative buildings, churches and the ceiling frescoes of St. Mary's cathedral church. Negombo is the centre of Sri Lanka's Catholic community, and you can expect to see many churches during a visit.

Negombo is also home to the country's second-largest fish market, the "Lellama", at the north end of the town's lagoon. There are daily fish auctions, which give tourists a chance to meet the area's fishermen and even organise fishing trips into the lagoon and the ocean beyond. Other nearby attractions open to visitors include the Muthurajawela marshland, which is part.

Getting there: Taxi costs Rs 1500 which can be booked at taxi counters in the departure hall. A trishaw will cost Rs 400–800. Besides, most hotels in Negombo can arrange pickups, but usually it's a pricey option: Rs 1500 to 2500.

There used to be a free shuttle bus from the Arrival Terminal to Katunayake bus stop, but it's no longer available. This bus now goes to Colombo. You may try your luck asking the driver to drop you off at Katunayake, but he may ask for the full fare to Colombo, anyway.

Otherwise, it is 15-min walk to the "Airport" bus terminal. A regular bus fare to Negombo bus terminal is Rs 22 (May 2015). Then take bus #905 to Negombo Beach for Rs 12.

Buses leave the main 7.20514 79.84096 3 Negombo Bus Station . ( updated Dec 2022 ) to Colombo every 30 mins. The journey costs Rs 75 and lasts one hour to one and half, depending on the traffic.

To Kandy : buses depart every 30 minutes from the main bus terminal, Rs 220, 3–4 hours.

To Sigiriya / Polonnaruwa : one bus daily at 14:00 from the main bus terminal. Trip lasts 4 hours to Sigiriya and 6 hours to Polonnaruwa.

To Anuradhapura : buses depart from Periyam Mulla junction bus stop in Negombo, journey takes more than 5 hours.

By taxi or trishaw

To reach Kandy , 100 km east of Negombo, one can take a tuk-tuk to Veyangoda and then get a 2–3 hours train ride.

Trishaws or "tuk tuks" are a common way to travel around. Be sure to negotiate your price ahead of the ride. These days, drivers tends to charge "fixed price" for tourists (e.g. Rs 200 from the Negombo Bus/Train Station to hotels in Lewis Place Street) and especially from Lewis Place it is difficult to catch the passing ones carrying locals if these "stationary" drivers are around.

Renting your own vehicle

You can find international companies at the airport or local one in Negombo streets, where you can easily rent tuk tuks, vans, 4x4 or motorbikes, providing you have an international driving license. Note that to rent a tuk tuk, a local license is needed (which can be obtained through a travel agency).

Local curry houses offer authentic dining for Rs 200. Cheaper, local restaurants are inland from the main strip, Porutota Rd. Roti Talk, on Porutota Rd and opposite Jetwing Blue, offers excellent local roti and chutney for Rs 200–300, and local curry and rice for Rs 700–900.

The three Jetwing resorts dominate the upper end of dining. Expect to pay about Rs 3000 for a meal.

Fine dining is one of the most satisfying factor enjoyed by any visitor who comes to Negombo.

• Finest sea food can be tasted in Negombo. Fresh fish, lobsters, crabs, prawns and shellfish can be ordered in many restaurants. Crabs are sourced from the local lagoons. The fish markets are worth a visit.
• Also any juicy tropical fruits can be purchased at Negombo food markets.

Specially Sri Lankan fresh king coconut is cheap and ubiquitous. If you search a bit you will be lucky enough to taste fresh toddy from area.

The local beers are Three Coins and Lion lagers. Locals are generally indifferent, although Three Coins is somewhat more full bodied. Arrack is the local spirit, made from coconut and tasting similar to rum.

There are plenty of hotels (both budget and mid-ranged) and hostels in town, mostly scattered around the beach area.

Only a stone’s throw away from the Colombo airport, Negombo is often just a pit stop for travelers who are headed to the famous historical sites of Central Sri Lanka or the stunning beaches of the south. But do you know that there are so many fun things to do in Negombo and nearby that you can easily spend a couple of days here?

Honestly, Negombo is a lot more than just beaches. Of course, you can chill at the beach all day long but who wants to do that when there are so many beautiful places to visit in Negombo.

With an endless list of tourist attractions, Negombo is an absolute must-have in every Sri Lankan itinerary.

Hit the beach

One of the best things to do in Negombo is to hit the beach. Negombo is a beach town after all and has one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka .

Negombo earned its reputation as a beach destination long time ago. Amazing beach resorts cropped up and travelers usually spent a couple of days at the end of their Sri Lankan journey lounging on Negombo’s long sandy beaches fringed by palm trees.

There are several wonderful beaches in Negombo. Browns Beach and Negombo Beach are the most popular ones. Morawala Beach is extremely scenic.

Usually, when you stay at a resort in Negombo, you will have access to their private beaches where you can swim, surf, sail, and watch stunning sunsets.

Take a tour of Negombo fish market

One of my favorite places to visit in Negombo is their main fish market .

Always a busy fishing town, Negombo is at the core of Sri Lankan fishing industry. Fishermen and women still practice traditional netting and fish drying methods in many parts of the city.

The fish market in Negombo not only gives you insights into these old techniques but also helps you deep dive into local culture and customs of the area.

Take a boat ride on Negombo Lagoon

Now that there are so many fishes in Negombo, I was pretty sure there would be a lagoon too. Well, I know it’s actually the other way round.

Because of a teeming, biodiverse lagoon in Negombo, the city is full of vibrant fish markets. So, you have to go and check out Negombo’s majestic lagoon.

One of the most exciting things to do is to take a relaxing boat ride on the Negombo lagoon . Just hop on a boat tour and glide through the lagoon waters spotting dense mangrove swamps, rare birds, and locals going about their lives. Also get a peek into Sri Lanka’s fishing culture here.

Cruise down Hamilton Canal

Built by the British in the 19th century, the Hamilton Canal is an incredible Negombo attraction . It is 9 miles (14 km) long and used to be the main route for transfer goods to the harbor during colonial times.

The Hamilton Canal is often referred to as the Dutch Canal because the Dutch had started a series of waterways that connected Sri Lankan ports with inland Dutch territory in the 18th century. Hamilton Canal was part of it. However, a formal canal was built much later by the British.

Cruising down Hamilton Canal is a fun thing to do in Negombo. You will watch life along the river, spot birds, and see fishermen coming back with their morning catch.

Bird watch in Muthurajawela

I had no clue that the wetlands of Muthurajawela were so close to Negombo. They are just 15.5 miles (25 km) away and it takes approximately 40 minutes to get there.

Muthurajawela is an absolute heaven for anyone who loves nature. Located south of Negombo Lagoon, it makes for a peaceful getaway from the hustle of Negombo City.

The wetlands are perfect for birding (the only other place where I have really birded in Sri Lanka is on my way to Nainativu Island from Jaffna ). You’ll see herons, egrets, waders, kingfishers, and cormorants in plenty here. And there are some exotic reptiles too. Think crocodiles and monitor lizards.

This amazing boat tour through Negombo’s waterways takes you on a ride of Muthurajawela wetlands and gives you a chance to experience remarkable tropical flora and fauna.

Visit pretty churches in Negombo

One of my favorite things to do in Negombo is to hop through its beautiful churches. And trust me when I say that Negombo is a church-lover’s delight. No doubt, it is often called “The Little Rome of Sri Lanka”.

Majestic, European-styled churches dot the city of Negombo. They come in various shapes and colors and are a treat for sore eyes.

Here are a couple of my favorite churches that totally need to be on your Negombo things to do list.

• St. Mary’s Church is located on the Main Street of Negombo. It is one of the largest churches in Sri Lanka and displays a strong, neo-classic flair. What is amazing about St. Mary’s Church is its pastel blue façade and the stunning ceiling murals which were painted by a local artist named N.S. Godammane.
• St. Sebastian’s Church at Wellaweediya is a stunning Roman Catholic church in Negombo. Modeled after Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral, the beautiful church is an absolute masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture.
• St. Stephen’s Anglican Church is a small, white-washed church set in the middle of lush green gardens overlooking Negombo’s old Dutch fort. Built in Gothic style, the church features many arched windows.
• St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya became famous in April 2019 when it became the target of a series of bomb blasts on Easter Sunday. Nearly 100 people were killed here. Even today, signs of the massacre remain and the mood here is solemn. Please be respectful and do not click pictures without permission.

Please note that churches in Negombo are sacred spaces. Dress respectfully and ask for permission before clicking pictures.

Explore the old Dutch fort

You can’t miss the old Dutch fort on a Negombo sightseeing tour. Crumbling and dilapidated, this is an important vestige of Negombo’s colonial past.

There isn’t much to see here except for some fort ramparts and an old clock tower. The fort is not well-maintained as the fort in Jaffna or the one in Galle. But it makes for an interesting tourist attraction in Negombo especially for history buffs.

A short walk away is the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church. So, you can easily combine seeing the two together.

Pay your respects at Angurukaramulla Temple

Angurukaramulla Temple is one of the oldest and most sacred Buddhist temples in Negombo. It features a massive Buddha statue that can be seen from a distance. Inside, you’ll find beautiful murals that depict tales from the life of Buddha.

You know how I love food and Sri Lankan cuisine is one of my favorites. In Negombo, you’ll find some great Sri Lankan food plus amazing seafood options because of its proximity to the sea.

Head to Lords Restaurant Complex for some authentic Sri Lankan curry and delicious sambols. Try a traditional platter and some seafood at Queen’s Restaurant . Or relish a scrumptious Sri Lankan buffet at a local’s home on this guided food tour in Negombo .

The best bit about Negombo is that it is the perfect springboard for many amazing day trips nearby. One of the best places that you can visit from Negombo on a day trip is the coastal town of Bentota .

Bentota is a beach town and has some of the most popular beach resorts in Sri Lanka . You can spend some time at the beach, visit a turtle hatchery, or explore the Cinnamon Island nearby.

Even better sign up for a unique river boat safari on Bentota River and spot exotic wildlife such as water monitors, fruit bats, monkeys, bee-eaters, and eagles.

In Bentota, you will also find some of the finest creations by Geoffrey Bawa, a famous Sri Lankan architect who invented the concept of tropical modernism . Lunuganga Estate, which was Geoffrey Bawa’s country home, is located right here in Bentota.

Do a city tour of Colombo

One of my favorite places to visit in Sri Lanka is its underrated capital city of Colombo.

Colombo is full of history, culture, and stunning monuments. There are so many wonderful things to do in Colombo that you can easily spend a few days here and still not see it all.

Colombo National Museum is amazing and so is the Gangaramaya Temple which is filled with colorful murals. At Pettah Market, you’ll step into a world full of colors, noise, and organized chaos while the Dutch Hospital will give you an idea of Sri Lanka’s colonial past. And the Red Mosque is so beautiful and unique.

I would highly recommend that you spend at least 2 days in Colombo and see all that it has to offer. But if that isn’t possible, it is not hard to visit Colombo on a day trip from Negombo. This Colombo city tour from Negombo makes sure you get to see all the highlights.

Head to Wilpattu National Park for a wildlife safari

If you are in the mood for a wildlife safari, then head to Wilpattu National Park, located 3 hours north of Negombo.

One of the largest and oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, Wilpattu is popular because of its large leopard population. It is also home to sloth bears, many different kinds of birds such as the painted stork and the little cormorant, and reptiles such as mugger crocodile and pond turtle.

I stayed at the sprawling, luxurious property of Heritance Negombo and loved every bit of my stay here. I had a sea-facing room with a balcony from where I could listen to and watch the waves crashing on the shore.

Heritance has an awesome pool where you can swim, sip a drink, and watch the sun go down behind the sea. Plus, their restaurant is amazing with a ton of different options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Try their traditional Sri Lankan platter because that is delicious.

Some of the other properties that caught my eye were Jetwing Lagoon (luxury – they are known for their pretty rooms, lagoon view, and delicious food) and Serendib Village Guest House (budget – friendly staff, big and clean rooms, and breakfast with a view).

Best time to visit Negombo

Sri Lanka’s weather always confuses me. This tiny island in the Indian Ocean has a huge variation in weather from north to south and east to west.

The best time to visit Negombo is either between Jan – April or July – August when the rainfall is less and temperatures are bearable .

However, note that because of its proximity to the equator and the sea, Negombo is pretty hot and humid throughout the year. Be sure to pack some sunscreen and a hat. And drink lots and lots of water.

That said, the sea water is pleasant all year round make it perfect for early morning dips or late evening swims.

Getting to Negombo, Sri Lanka

One great thing about Negombo is that it is located super close to the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.

It takes about 20 minutes to get to Negombo from the airport by car. That is lower than the time taken to reach Colombo city which is 1 hour away from the airport. That’s why Negombo is often the preferred arrival and/or departure destination for travelers coming to Sri Lanka.

Getting around Negombo, Sri Lanka

The best way to get around Negombo is by tuk-tuk. They are cheap and hassle-free. Just get on to the road and signal one with a wave.

Tuk-tuk drivers are usually happy to take you around. They may suggest a day-long tour of Negombo’s tourist attractions.

A bustling fishing town, Negombo is the closest city of consequence to Sri Lanka’s main international airport , and is usually either the first stop of choice to commence your travels in Sri Lanka or the last in winding down your holiday. The town has for centuries been an important trading port, with its natural lagoon first attracting Arab merchants and traders here as far back as the 7th Century, in search of the prized spice cinnamon which grew profusely in the area. Later, in the 1500s it became a coveted possession of Portuguese colonists who cemented their arrival by building a fort on the coast to protect their interests. Their influence on the area is still evident today as their introduction of Catholicism led to the building of countless churches, which has given the town the moniker “Little Rome”. The Dutch ousted the Portuguese from Negombo in 1646, and further improved and expanded the existing fort, but with the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1851 it was ceded to the British.

A little north of the town proper, along a stretch of well maintained beach, Negombo’s famed Golden Mile is the heart of the city’s tourist area and is packed with hotels and accommodation to suit a range of budgets. At the top end of the spectrum Jetwing Beach and Jetwing Lagoon are front runners. Jetwing Lagoon is a creation of the Geoffrey Bawa, hailed as the father of modern Asian architecture and is truly an enchanting experience. Goldi Sands, Jetwing Blue and Jetwing Sea offer excellent facilities and good service, and value for money options include Camelot Beach Hotel, Catamaran Beach Hotel and Paradise Beach Hotel. For the budget conscious, a plethora of guest houses are readily available which provide true Sri Lankan hospitality.

Dining out presents no problem as Negombo offers a wide range of restaurants and pubs catering to a variety of palates, with most of them conveniently located along the main tourist strip. Lords Restaurant is one of the most eyecatching and serves a range of international and fusion cuisine. Being a beach resort, as is expected seafood dining options are aplenty, with popular venues being Coco Beach, The Poseidon and Spargo Beach Restaurant. For dedicated international fare, Prego is the top choice for Italian and Bijou serves up fantastic traditional Swiss dishes. If its excellent pub grub you are after, then the Rodeo Pub and the Tusker Restaurant would be good options.

Other than the sun and sand, Negombo offers plenty to do and see. At the top of the list would be the Dutch Fort by the sea. Although only a part of the original structure remains, it lies as a physical reminder of the importance colonial powers placed on Negombo. Nearby, the main fish market makes for an interesting dose of culture if you can deal with associated aromas. The Hamilton Canal, built by the Dutch to connect Colombo to the south and Puttalam to the north, runs through the town of Negombo and although it was constructed to facilitate the transport of cinnamon, it is now used by the fishing community to launch their daily expeditions. The Angurukaramulla Temple on the outskirts of the town, make for an interesting visit to see its ornate buildings and an 18-foot image of the Buddha. Although packed with churches at every turn, St. Mary’s Church in the centre of town is one of the most imposing and aesthetic, displaying distinct Potuguese architecture and magnificent frescoes covering its vaulted ceiling. Souvenir shops line the main tourist thoroughfare selling a wide variety of curious and local handicrafts, perfect for taking memories back home.

For the more actively inclined, nature lovers will be thrilled with a boat excursion through the Muthurajawela marsh. This vast, protected extent of mangrove swampland is a biodiversity hotspot and travelling along its many waterways is both peaceful and exhilarating at the same time. Thanks to its long maritime history, the coast off Negombo is littered with numerous wrecks offering excellent dives which can be facilitated by diving outfits found around the tourist strip.

Negombo’s location also makes it a fine base from which to launch one day excursions, which take less than two hours travel one way. The  Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage  is a very popular attraction where scores of elephants can be seen in a controlled environment. Feeding time is the best time to visit and takes place twice a day in the morning and afternoon, followed by the herd being taken in convoy to the adjoining river for bathing. An hour north, off Chilaw, the  Munneswaram temple is a revered Shiva temple held in great veneration by Hindus and Buddhists alike. It is also an important site on the Ramayana trail, with the temple marking the place where King Rama of India prayed for forgiveness from Lord Shiva after a battle with King Ravana. Half an hour further north, the Anawilundawa Wetlands  offer bird watchers and nature lovers a pristine environment of ancient man made lakes teeming with an extraordinary amount of water fowl, waders and raptors.

Explore Hamilton Canal / Dutch Canal

The Hamilton Canal (Dutch Canal) is not only a window into the past but also a recreational haven. You may have heard of the saying “Where there are Dutch, there are canals!”… No… I just made it up! 😊. It is true, though!

As per Persian travelers, some form of waterways existed even in the 8th Century, which connected one lagoon to the other. When the Dutch came in, they saw the huge potential of building proper canals for cheap transportation of spices to the ports.

Now the Dutch Canal or Hamilton canal as it is also called, has two parts. North of Negombo lagoon is about 12 KM long and reaches the outskirts of Puttalam and the Southern part is up to Colombo. Negombo lagoon itself is more than 10 KM long along the coast.

One way to explore the canal is the boat ride (mentioned above) in Negombo lagoon, who will gladly take you into the canal. The Canal is narrow in a few places. As per the boatman, once upon a time, the canal was so narrow that you could touch the buildings on the sides with the oars.

One could also take a leisurely walk along the canal or rent a bike to enjoy the quaint surroundings.

Visit Negombo Fish Market Complex

Experience the vibrant charm of Negombo fishing village and immerse yourself in its bustling open-air fishing market. Discover a world where time seems to stand still as local fishermen bring in their daily catch, their colorful boats dotting the horizon.

Daily catch is segregated by type and size and then immersed in salt water before they are put out to dry on jute cloth sheets. There are sheets and sheets of drying fish which cover the entire beach! A separate partly covered area is earmarked for fresh catch.

In Negombo fish market, it is the early bird catches the fish! Auctioning of fish starts early in the morning, even before the day breaks, with the fishermen selling their catch from previous night’s outing. Some of the fishermen have been out at the seas for many days! They claim it is one of the biggest open air fish markets in the world! And anyone can bid!

Negombo’s fishing commerce is a crucial economic sector, driving employment, trade, and tourism in the region. The city’s natural resources, coupled with the entrepreneurial spirit of its residents, continue to fuel the growth and success of the fishing industry in Negombo.

Negombo Dutch Fort

The Negombo Dutch Fort is a historical landmark located in Negombo, Sri Lanka and is not to be missed, although much of the fort is in ruins. It is very near Negombo fish market.

This was originally a Portuguese fort but quite weak in structure. When the Dutch came in they rebuilt it during late the 17th century, to protect the regions thriving cinnamon trade and their people.

Eventually when the British came, they tore down much of it to build a prison using the stones of the fort.

Now most parts are in ruins and only the prison and the clock tower stand as a testament to the island’s heritage. The prison is still in good condition is still being used by Sri Lankan authorities, as a prison. Mind you, there is no guided tour of the prison. Hahaha. There is only one way to explore the insides!!!

It takes less than an hour to explore Negombo Dutch Fort and is free of charge.

Tour the Temples & Churches of Negombo

Sri Lanka is a multi-religious country with Buddhism as its major religion. Negombo has its share of places of worship of many faiths. Having said that, I found that there were more Christian Churches than that of any other religion, in Negombo. The reason is because during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial periods, many Catholic missionaries arrived in the area and established churches, making Negombo a predominantly Christian town. The city became a center of Christian influence and worship, which has persisted over the centuries. There are over 20 churches in this small town of Negombo. We will talk about only a few important ones.

Churches and Cathedrals

St. Sebastian Church Wellaweediya (Sea Street) is one beautiful church with its bell tower separated from the main church building.

There is another St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya, which came into prominence because of a bomb blast on Easter a few years ago, that claimed over 90 lives ! 🙁

Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage is located near the Northern end of Negombo lagoon in Duwa village. This Portuguese influenced church is dedicated to Mother Mary who is depicted with Jesus in one hand, and a ship on the other. The name suggests that sailors would worship her before setting out.

St. Mary’s Church, a magnificent blue colored Catholic church, is a noteworthy attraction, featuring beautiful architecture and a serene atmosphere. It is one of the biggest churches in Sri Lanka.

Buddhist Viharayas and Hindu Temples in Negombo Sri Lanka

Angurukaramulla Viharaya, also known as Bodhirajarama Maha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple and is home to the Dragon entrance, paintings and beautiful sculptures and, 6 meter reclining Buddha. There is also library in ruins, apparently predating the Buddhist Temple.

Sri Singama Kali Amman Kovil in Negombo, Sri Lanka, is a revered Hindu temple that holds great significance for the local Tamil community. Dedicated to the goddess Kali, it boasts stunning architecture, intricate sculptures, and hosts vibrant festivals. • Be appropriately dressed while visiting places of worship.  

Tidbits, Snippets and Trivia on Negombo

• Negombo is sometimes often called Sri Lanka’s favorite coastal town.
• Hamilton Canal is named after Gavin Hamilton who was the Government Agent of Revenue and Commerce.
• Negombo is the Portuguese way of saying the Tamil name “NeerKozhumbu” (நீர்கொழும்பு). By the way the Tamil name for Colombo is Kozhumbu (கொழும்பு )” and Neer means water. Maybe referring to Negombo Lagoon, perhaps.
• Why Colombo is called so is another discussion, altogether. We will get to that when we write about Colombo. 😊
• Negombo Sri Lanka is sometimes referred to as the “Little Rome” of Sri Lanka due to its strong Roman Catholic influence and the presence of numerous churches in the area.

Negombo is essentially a beach destination located on the west coast of the island 34 km north of Colombo and 6 km north of Sri Lanka's main international airport. Over the decades, Negombo has been quite a tourist hub just as much as other coastal cities like Galle and Trincomalee. One of the largest commercial cities in Sri Lanka, Negombo promises a fine destination in the tropics. Negombo is famous for its gorgeous sandy beach as well as the old fishing industry.

Negombo has one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka and this tropical sandy beach coupled with the surrounding star-class hotels attracts scores of tourists around the world. "Beach Park" of Negombo also attracts visitors. Among activities in Negombo water sports and diving are popular among the vacationers.

Being a fishing town and home to Sri Lanka's second largest fish market, Negombo is popular as a paradise of fresh seafood. Auctions of fish are held daily and visitors have opportunity to buy fish and even go fishing in the lagoon or deep seas with local fishermen 

Negombo Fort

Initially built by the Portuguese to defend Colombo, the fort of Negombo was destroyed and rebuilt by the Dutch in 1640 on a pentagonal pattern with four bulwarks near the lagoon. Moats had been built to protect the fort and the gate was accessible through a drawbridge. Today, a few walls and the fine arched gateway inscribed with the date 1678 of this old Dutch fort can be seen and most of the fort remains ruined.

Muturajawela Marsh

Lying in the Negombo lagoon towards south of the Negombo city, Muturajawela is a 6,000-hectare marshy land which is home to a variety of flora and fauna numerically 192 flora and 209 fauna. Considering the rich biodiversity of this marsh, it has been declared as s sanctuary by the government since 1996. More popular among birders, Muturajawela abounds with a large number of avifauna specially waterfowls such as herons and egrets. Sri Lanka Slender Loris can very rarely be spotted at Muturajawela which is also home to a number of ichthyofauna.

Muturajawela Marsh Centre provides much assistance to visitors in terms of education, boat rides etc. It is best to visit this beautiful march early in the morning or evening.

Yet another beach destination in the tropics, Marawila is a town located 27 km north of Negombo and 22 km south of Chilaw. The long golden beach with palm-fringed terrain has made Marawila a paradise of beach-loving vacationers from around the world. Negombo (Sri Lanka) is a popular resort that many travelers use as an intermediate point while traveling. This state of affairs is due to the convenient location of the village – just 40 km from the airport in Colombo. Negombo is a small town located in the western part of Sri Lanka. The settlement is located on the Indian Ocean in a picturesque lagoon. This is one of the main commercial centers of the country.

Most of the history of the city was ruled by Moors who successfully traded cinnamon. Then the Arabs were ousted by the Portuguese, built a fort, took control of the sale of spices to other countries. During the years of Portuguese rule in Negombo, the local population converted to Catholicism, which is why today a large number of Catholic churches are preserved here.

In the mid-17th century, the Dutch seized power, built a fortress, erected new buildings, cathedrals and organized a network of water channels.

The cleanest sections of the beach are located along two city streets:
