Your tour guide for this trip has a history of taking the military on tours around these sights whilst still serving for his country. This tour is suitable for both riders and pillions who dont want high mileage days and love to spend time taking in the history and sights.

Arromanches les Bains

What's Included

What's not included, day 1 - calais - le havre.

The group will assemble outside the Euro Tunnel main building in Folkestone to meet your tour guide and then make your way to the train. A briefing will take place during the 35 minute crossing. Once off the train we head straight to the coast road heading south riding along the White Cliffs with views of the White Cliffs of Dover on a clear day.

Our first coffee stop is in Boulogne-Sur-Mer on our way down the coast to Normandy. We will be lunching in Le Treport followed by a stop off in Dieppe where during 6 hours after the failed beach landing on 19th August 1942, the British and Canadian Army's suffered over 3500 casualties. Following on from here our next coffee stop is harbour side in FECamp and finally down to Le Havre and our city centre hotel.

Calais - Le Havre highlight

Day 2 - Le Havre - Caen

After a fun night out in Le Havre we start the day riding through the lovely coastal town of Hon Fleur. A really picturesque Harbour. Carrying on along the twisty rural, beautiful coast road surrounded by fantastic scenery we visit the Museum at the Merville Battery. The Pegasus Bridge Museum is next, with one of the 3 original Horsa gliders, followed by Juno Beach. A day packed full of history. Next up is the 360 degree cinema (definitely worth a look) at Arromanches followed by a visit to view Port Mulberry.

We finish the day with a beautiful 30 mile cross country ride to our hotel in the centre of Caen surround by bars and restaurants.

Le Havre - Caen highlight

Day 3 - Caen - Falaise

After a great night out in Caen we head out to our first stop of the day to visit the Bayeux Memorial and the Musee de La Bataille de Normandie.

Up to the coast next to visit the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach. The cemetery contains the graves of our 9000 US Combatants who died in the Normandy. The film Saving Private Ryan was based on this area. Signals Monument and Sculpture are also on the list.

From Omaha Beach we head to Pointe du Hoc where the second ranger battalion of around 200 men scaled a 100ft hight cliff under hostile fire and destroyed six enemy gun which could fire on both Omaha and Utah Beaches. Pointe Du Hoc is now a memorial to those men and has remained untouched since D-Day.

Lunch is taken just up the Beach in Grand Camp around the Harbour. After lunch we spend time at the US Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mere-Eglise. Shortly after midnight on 6th June over 18000 men of the US 82nd and 101st Airbourne Division were dropped to secure the exits from Utah Beach. The TV series "Band of Brothers" is based on the real events surrounding these landings. From here we head inland on some fantastic roads across the Battle Fields of Normandy to reach our over night stop in Falaise. The Battle of Falaise Pocket between the 12th and 21st August was the final action which saw the Germans retreat from Normandy.

Caen - Falaise highlight

Day 4 - Falaise - Amigns

Refreshed from our stay in Falaise we head East to Saint-Cambert-Sur-Dive where thousands of Germans were attempting to cross 3 small bridges in the village which became a focus point for the Allied attack driving the Germans out of Normandy. The rest of the day is bike riding time on superb French country roads, great views and very little traffic as we make our way up to Amiens for the last night together.

Falaise - Amigns highlight

Day 5 - Amiens - Calais

First port of call today is to the Crater Lochnagar just South of La Boisselle in the Somme Department. 19 wings were dug under the German lines on the British Section of the Somme Front, to assist the infantry advance at the start of the battle. The mine was sprung at 7.25am on 1st July 1916 and left a crater 21m deep and 100m wide which was captured and held by the British Troops. From here we head North to Arras and then make our way to Calais for an early afternoon train back to England

80th anniversary D-Day Battlefield tour

normandy motorcycle tours

On 6th June 1944 over 132 thousand Allied soldiers from 15 countries/regions landed on five beaches in Normandy, with over 23 thousand paratroopers landing at strategic targets inland, heralding the beginning of the end of World War Two.

These beaches would witness what remains the largest amphibious assault in history The troops on the beaches were supported by nearly 200 thousand sailors aboard nearly 7000 vessels (only 200 of which were warships), and sorties flown by thousands of aircrew in over 9000 aircraft (not counting the gliders), and 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of this remarkable undertaking.

Starting in Portsmouth, we will visit the D-Day museum on the seafront prior to your first group dinner near the mouth of Portsmouth harbour, before we follow in the troops footsteps and sail overnight from Portsmouth to Normandy.

Once disembarked we will visit all 5 beaches, Commonwealth, US and German cemeteries, the German batteries at Longues-sur-Mer, Arromanches-Les-Bains (where you can watch "Normandy's 100 Days” at the 360 Cinema) and Pointe du Hoc, Pegasus Bridge, and the new British Normandy Memorial, as well as and many other places of significance.

We spend two nights in a quality three star Hotel well located for the Normandy beaches, with parking nearby. Whether you’re going to learn more about this historic event, or on a mission to track down some family history, this is an absorbing tour.

D-Day may have been 80 years ago, but the legacy lives on in the historical sites that we will visit. Come with us and see for yourself...

Frankrijk - Normandy Routekaart

Media of Normandy

About this tour: normandy, a tour to the landing beaches in normandy, france.

This motorbike tour to the Normandy Landing Beaches is an 8-day themed tour dedicated to D-Day, Operation Overlord. Operation Overlord was the code name for the invasion by the Western Allies of German-occupied Western Europe during the Second World War. Combine beautiful motorcycling in Normandy with rich history!

The outward journey (first day) and return journey (last day) you will drive on your own initiative.

Day route 1: Ypres-Dieppe | 293 km

From Ypres you drive to the coast at Veurne and from there to Dunkirk. Before WWII, this was a landmark. It was here at Dunkirk that the armies of Britain and France narrowly escaped German pursuit during the 1940 invasion. This event, known as Operation Dynamo, took place from 27 May to 4 June and is known as the miracle of Dunkirk. Navy and private individuals with their own boats (900 in total), together brought back 338,000 soldiers from the French beaches to England. The film "Dunkirke" gives a true picture of this Operation Dynamo. The Museum Du Souvenir in Dunkirk reminds us of this spectacular evacuation.

Past Audinghen, you come across 3 casemates that were part of the Atlantic Wall. Next, you pass the old town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, once a Roman port. You drive through the harbour and along the river on the D940 to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the bay of the Somme. You drive around the delta. It is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in France and an important area for (migratory) birds. The route goes through the village of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme.

Via Le Treport, a striking harbour town with chalk cliffs, you drive through the port area. Then you follow the road as close to the coast as possible to finally arrive at today's stop: Dieppe. Dieppe is known for the dramatic "test landing" by the Allies on 19 August 1942. More than 4,000 Allied soldiers, especially Canadians, were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. In Dieppe, a museum and a cemetery recall this catastrophe.

Day route 2: Dieppe-Caen | 199 km

Today, the route goes to Caen. The route to Caen goes again completely along the beautiful French coast. So, you have all the time to enjoy the views and the tourist points along the way. Just before the end of the day, you pass the first visiting point of D-Day.

You leave Dieppe and follow the coastline again. At Le Poincon, you leave the route for a special view of the rocks at Eglise Saint Valery. Views, dunes, rocks and beautiful towns alternate again. Saint-Léger is another of those towns. Here, the open area changes into a more varied landscape with forestation and differences in height. Fécamp and Etretat are beautiful towns. You drive right through them. On the big bridge, you cross the Seine at Le Havre and drive into Basse Normandie, the western part of Normandy.

Day route 3: Caen-Arromanches | 59 km

In the morning, you have the opportunity to visit the large and informative Mémorial de Caen. Then you drive to the invasion beaches. The Mémorial de Caen is a museum you really shouldn't miss. Thanks to all the information it offers, you'll get a clear overview of all the events, from the Second World War to the Cold War. Allow 2 to 4 hours for your visit to this museum. Don't forget to visit the bunker, which is accessible from the back of the museum. Permanent exhibitions are: The Second World War; D-Day and the Battle of Normandy and The Cold War. Experience shows that you will easily spend 2 hours here. After this impressive visit, you go on your way.

Day route 4: Arromanches-Cherbourg | 132 km

The next day, you continue your route along the invasion beaches. After 8 km, you pass the German artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer. This battery was perfectly placed to withstand the landings of 6 June 1944. The guns were aimed at Omaha and Gold Beach, right in front of the landings. On D-Day, the battery fought a duel with the Allied fleet. At sunrise it was finally silenced. Now the battery is one of the best preserved in France and the only place where still the original guns stand, which were then able to shoot 45 kg grenades 22 km far. The view from the fire control post, dug into the cliff, gives a great view over the bay of the Seine. That afternoon you will pass many more stops that are very interesting, such as: Longues-sur-Mer, Pointe du Hoc, the D-Day experience centre and the WW2 museum. You spend the night in Cherbourg, the hotel is situated at the harbour. Certainly worthwhile for an evening stroll.

Day route 5: Cherbourg-Rouen | 357 km

Today you drive from Cherbourg, the start of the Road of Liberty, via Falaise to Rouen. In Cherbourg you start at km 0 of the route. From this point, you follow a part of this special route today. The N13 is a monotonous road to drive, but because the Allied armies marched on this road, we keep following it for 40 km. Every kilometre you see signs of this Voie de la Liberté.

After 40 km, the first stop is Sainte-Mére-Eglise. This place is well known for the American paratrooper who hung on the church tower here. In the middle of the town you pass Sainte-Mère-Eglise Liberation Monument. A little further on in the Airborne Museum, it is explained why the paratroopers were dropped in this area and how it ended. After the stop at Sainte-Mére-Eglise you drive further inland into Normandy. The route goes through the "pocket of Falaise" where German troops were trapped. Yet a large part of these troops could still escape.

You stay in a 4-star hotel, this hotel is within walking distance of the historic centre.

Day route 6: Rouen-Arras | 253 km

Today is the last day of routing. A smooth route through the north of France brings you again to a historic town, with a Dutch touch, namely Arras. It is a relatively short route today and that means you can use the time to visit the town at the end of this trip. The centre of Arras is simply beautiful, which is partly due to the two main squares of the city: Grand Place and Place des Héros. Both squares look un-French, but immediately remind you of the inner cities, as you mostly see in Belgium. You will see Guild houses, a belfry and a town hall that immediately reminds you of the cloth halls that you find in the western part of Belgium. Not surprising, because Arras has not always been part of France. Just after the Middle Ages, Arras, which then still had the Dutch name Atrecht, belonged to the Netherlands.

A silence reigns on the Normandy beaches which saw thousands of men landing during the darkest time in France’s history. Omaha Beach, Juno Beach, Sainte-Mere-Eglise, and many other locations in this region provide a window into the past and a glimpse of the madness of mankind. But squalls on the cliffs of Etretat and carpets of wild heather and gorse along the Cotentin coast will soon sweep the dark clouds from your thoughts. Twisty country roads follow the coastline and will take your bike from one beautiful port town to another, including Deauville , Honfleur , or Dieppe and Le TrĂ©port.

The best time to visit Normandy is early summer and beginning of the fall, after the spring rainy season and before it gets too cold. If you don’t mind riding in the rain though, the weather is definitely part of the Normandy charm!

If you fly into Paris, you will likely reach Normandy by train, which takes an hour and a half to two hours, depending where you go. You can of course rent a motorcycle in Paris and then drive to Normandy, but the route is mostly highways and about 3 hours.

If you are coming from the UK, you can also take a ferry into various ports, such as the Portsmouth to Caen or to Le Havre .

If you’re looking to rent a motorcycle in Normandy, there are a few options available. One popular choice is to rent from a website that works with several different providers, such as Easy Renter . These companies offer a range of motorcycles for rent, from classic models to modern touring bikes. You can also rent from a local company, such as Normandy Bike in Caen.

When traveling through Normandy you can either stay in different cities along the route or base yourself out of a home city and do day trips. Caen is the largest city in the area so will have a wide range of lodging options for different budgets. Rouen is also a nice option, with its close proximity to Étretat.

Although there are many sights to see in Normandy, here is a suggested 3 day itinerary for you that I’ve created for you to visit some of the most well known and amazing spots. (Map of route below)

Time to drive: 1 hour 30 minutes

Begin your adventure in Rouen , a charming student city known for its Gothic architecture and famous cathedral. Here you can enjoy a nice breakfast before beginning your motorcycle route. Wander the medieval city and visit the Gros Horloge (a 14th-century astronomical clock)(literally translates to ‘big clock’) and the Place du Vieux-MarchĂ© (where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431).

From Rouen, start your journey to Étretat , a small coastal town famous for its breathtaking cliffs and natural arches.

cliffs etretat

Once you reach Étretat , take a stroll along the pebble beach and admire the stunning cliffs that inspired artists such as Monet and Boudin. On a warm, summer day, you can sunbathe on the beach with the locals and climb up to the top of the cliffs. Étretat has a small city centre so grab a local lunch and enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. For an unforgettable experience, take a boat tour and view the cliffs from a unique perspective.

Time to drive: 3 hours and 15 minutes

On day two, get ready to visit one of France’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Mont St Michel!

Mont Saint Michel is a little bit west of most of the Normandy sights, but well worth it! This little island is surrounded by water when the tide is high, and sometimes overrun by sheep when the tide is low! It’s a medieval castle town, with many shops and restaurants to visit, as well as an abbey at the very top. On a clear day, you can look out over the Normandy countryside from the monastery walls.

To get there, take the D940 route and ride along the beautiful Normandy coast, passing through picturesque villages and stunning beaches. For a break on route, you can stop in Honfleur , a charming fishing village where you can enjoy some fresh seafood and admire the medieval architecture. Once you’ve stretched your legs a bit, continue on your way west towards Mont St Michel.

When you’ve arrived, park your motorcycle at the Mont St Michel parking lot and head to the medieval town on foot (there should be plenty of signs). From the parking lot there is a bus that frequently takes visitors to the town and back. You can walk, but the walk is 30-45 minutes one way, plus you’re already going to be walking a bit around the village! Once you’ve entered the village, shop around and enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants before visiting the abbey at the top of the hill, which dates back to the 8th century, and take in the stunning views of the surrounding bay.

Time to drive: 2 hours

It’s finally time to visit the D-Day Beaches! Head towards the Omaha Beach and the coastline, where the Allied Forces landed during the Normandy invasion in World War II. First, visit the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer , where over 9,000 American soldiers who lost their lives during the D-Day landings are buried. There seem to be miles and miles of crosses marking the soldiers buried, and there are many memorial statues telling the history of D-Day and WWII. Definitely a must-see for anyone visiting the area, American or not.

From there, head to Pointe du Hoc , a point on the cliffs that housed many German bunkers. During the D-Day landings, rangers were sent to the Pointe du Hoc cliffs to distract the army while their comrades landed on nearby Omaha, Utah, and Sword beaches. There is a museum at Pointe du Hoc that tells more about the history, and you can also go visit the abandoned bunkers on the hill.

Afterwards, make your way to Omaha Beach , one of the most significant sites of the D-Day landings, and pay your respects to the soldiers who fought for freedom.

If you decide to stay on route, there are plenty of accommodation options for all budgets. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Hotel Kyriad Rouen Centre : Located in the heart of Rouen , this hotel offers comfortable rooms and a convenient location close to the city’s main attractions.
  • La Villa 10 : This charming hotel in Étretat offers cozy rooms and a beautiful terrace with jacuzzi for relaxing after a long day of riding.
  • Le Relais Saint Michel : This hotel, located just a stone’s throw from Mont St Michel , offers stunning views of the bay and comfortable rooms.
  • Hotel de la Marine : This hotel in a small town on the coast is a great base for exploring the D-Day beaches and features comfortable rooms an on-site restaurant, and amazing location right on the water.

If you have additional time to explore, you should check out these other sights in Normandy:

  • Bayeux : Bayeux is a charming town located just a short drive away from the D-day beaches and is best known for its famous tapestry. The Bayeux Tapestry is an 11th century old embroidered cloth that depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England. The tapestry is on display at the Tapestry museum, and you can also spend some time wandering the Old Town of Bayeux.
  • Giverny : This small village is best known as the home of the famous Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Monet lived and worked in Giverny for more than 40 years, and it was here that he painted his famous water lily series. Visitors can tour Monet’s house and gardens, which have been restored to their original splendor, and explore the charming village streets. Giverny is about an hour from Paris in Southeastern Normandy, but well worth visiting if you’re headed in that direction!
  • Deauville : Deauville is a charming seaside resort town known for its glamorous atmosphere, luxurious hotels, and beautiful sandy beaches. Deauville is popular during the summer months and offers a wide range of activities such as horse racing, golf, and water sports. The town is also known for its elegant architecture, including the famous half-timbered houses and the iconic Casino BarriĂšre de Deauville.

These destinations are all within easy reach of the region of Normandy itinerary, and are well worth a visit for anyone who has the time to extend their trip.

In our customers’ words

Ian & heather – devon.

“We have been on 5 holidays, and just booked our 6 th which in itself speaks volumes and the best recommendation we can both make!

The organisation is excellent from the start of the tour to the very last day.  The roads are some of the best biking roads you could ever wish to ride on along with the stunning scenery. Each route and hotel has been planned meticulously which is all down to John & Jen’s hard work and research.  No matter which tour you choose to do you will enjoy riding a mixture of twisties and sweepers, whether you ride fast or slow. If you are thinking of booking a tour with BN European – definitely give it a go, you will not be disappointed, whether you are a rider or pillion, you’ll come away with great memories and the urge to book another tour straight away!”

Rob & Michael – Lincolnshire

“We’ve been on several tours with BN, the first was the WW2 Sights Tour in 2013 which far exceeded our expectations – it’s why we’ve been back 5 times.

The stops are in great locations and they find a fantastic mix of clear twisty roads and great hotels.

normandy motorcycle tours

We’ve been with other tour companies but we keep going back to BN. Can’t wait for our next outing – we’ve already booked for next year.”

Nigel & Mandy – County Londonderry

“Having travelled with BN European Tours 3 times already and booked for next year we simply wouldn’t consider anyone else. John and Jen are amazing hosts, always working hard to make everyone’s holiday fantastic from the well-researched roads and hotels to the accompanying luggage van.

As a couple travelling on our own it’s great to know that we will be so well looked after and that we will meet up with a group of like-minded people to enjoy great days on the bike and really good fun evenings. We can’t recommend them highly enough, just fantastic.”

Daryl & Jane – Gloucestershire

“We chose BN European Tours after recommendations from friends. I have been with them as a solo rider and with my partner Jane. John and Jen’s attention to detail and organisational skills are second to none; you literally have nothing to think about other than the great roads, scenery and a cold beer at the end of the day.

You travel at your own speed and there is no pressure to keep up with faster riders. There are always a lot of laughs to be had, even at John’s jokes. I have been on five tours with John and Jen and it’s always great to see familiar faces from previous tours; a testament to them both of the great experience we all have.”

Alan – Cheshire

“BN Tours are like drinking your favourite beer – you know exactly what you’re going to get and when it’s over you want more. Great rides are guaranteed on the best biking roads in Europe which have been meticulously researched over many years by the best in the business. The marker system allows you to ride at your own pace and at the end of the day you know there is a quality hotel with great food waiting for you. Whatever your level of biking experience, John & Jen are the perfect hosts and do their utmost to ensure everyone has the best possible holiday.

BN are the professionals – the Numero Uno tour company. I can’t recommend them more highly”.

Jon & Jackie – Berkshire

“My wife and I love touring with BN and we have toured with them numerous times. So why do we go keep going back? Well one reason Jen. She is such a great host, thoughtful considerate and always putting us bikers first. She has researched and ridden all of the roads to ensure we have a great days riding. She has found lovely boutique hotels to stay in and always within picturesque surroundings.

Jen singlehandedly ensures everything runs smoothly from start to finish, nothing is too much trouble for her. She speaks 7 different languages helping to sort out any issues wherever you are. Jen is the single reason you will have a stress free touring holiday with BN and memories that will last a lifetime. John drives the van.”

Gavin & Josie – Cornwall

“We have been on four tours with Jen and John to date and have another to look forward to this year. We love how the stress and strain of route planning, fuel stops, hotel stays and luggage carrying is all taken care of in such a professional manner. There is always fantastic support from Jen and John if a mishap occurs (which we are unfortunately guilty of !).

You ride brilliant roads, get to see many great places, meet amazing people from all walks of life, with a common interest, some even become very good friends. Memories made on every tour, we look forward to many more. It makes the travelling up from Cornwall worthwhile!”

Alan & Julie – Norfolk

“We use BN European Tours because everything is organised for you and runs seamlessly from the first day to the last. Hotels and included meals are always of a high standard. The accompanying van is a real bonus, as it allows you to ride without your heavy luggage.

Just turn up and ride, enjoy the great roads and stunning scenery stress free. BN European Tours will look after you!”

Vince & Tracey – Gloucestershire

“The many hours of careful research ahead of each tour by John & Jen themselves is a testament to why their tours are always such a huge success. We simply arrive, relax and enjoy.

The second man drop off system ensures no-one is lost along the way and everyone gets to ride at their own pace without any pressure. We’ve always been made to feel very welcome by the lovely John and Jen who continue to work incredibly hard throughout the entire trip to ensure everything runs smoothly so we can all enjoy biking along some spectacular scenic routes. Enjoying riding all day on fabulous roads is what it’s all about and without the worry of where to stop, where to park and where to stay each night because it’s all taken care of. In fact, the most difficult decision for us is always which BN European tour to choose next!”
