New NASA Black Hole Visualization Takes Viewers Beyond the Brink

Ever wonder what happens when you fall into a black hole? Now, thanks to a new, immersive visualization produced on a NASA supercomputer, viewers can plunge into the event horizon, a black hole’s point of no return.

“People often ask about this, and simulating these difficult-to-imagine processes helps me connect the mathematics of relativity to actual consequences in the real universe,” said Jeremy Schnittman, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, who created the visualizations. “So I simulated two different scenarios, one where a camera — a stand-in for a daring astronaut — just misses the event horizon and slingshots back out, and one where it crosses the boundary, sealing its fate.”

The visualizations are available in multiple forms. Explainer videos act as sightseeing guides, illuminating the bizarre effects of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Versions rendered as 360-degree videos let viewers look all around during the trip, while others play as flat all-sky maps.

To create the visualizations, Schnittman teamed up with fellow Goddard scientist Brian Powell and used the Discover supercomputer at the NASA Center for Climate Simulation . The project generated about 10 terabytes of data — equivalent to roughly half of the estimated text content in the Library of Congress — and took about 5 days running on just 0.3% of Discover’s 129,000 processors. The same feat would take more than a decade on a typical laptop.

The destination is a supermassive black hole with 4.3 million times the mass of our Sun, equivalent to the monster located at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

“If you have the choice, you want to fall into a supermassive black hole,” Schnittman explained. “Stellar-mass black holes, which contain up to about 30 solar masses,  possess much smaller event horizons and stronger tidal forces, which can rip apart approaching objects before they get to the horizon.”

This occurs because the gravitational pull on the end of an object nearer the black hole is much stronger than that on the other end. Infalling objects stretch out like noodles, a process astrophysicists call spaghettification .

The simulated black hole’s event horizon spans about 16 million miles (25 million kilometers), or about 17% of the distance from Earth to the Sun. A flat, swirling cloud of hot, glowing gas called an accretion disk surrounds it and serves as a visual reference during the fall. So do glowing structures called photon rings, which form closer to the black hole from light that has orbited it one or more times. A backdrop of the starry sky as seen from Earth completes the scene.

As the camera approaches the black hole, reaching speeds ever closer to that of light itself, the glow from the accretion disk and background stars becomes amplified in much the same way as the sound of an oncoming racecar rises in pitch. Their light appears brighter and whiter when looking into the direction of travel.

The movies begin with the camera located nearly 400 million miles (640 million kilometers) away, with the black hole quickly filling the view. Along the way, the black hole’s disk, photon rings, and the night sky become increasingly distorted — and even form multiple images as their light traverses the increasingly warped space-time.

In real time, the camera takes about 3 hours to fall to the event horizon, executing almost two complete 30-minute orbits along the way. But to anyone observing from afar, it would never quite get there. As space-time becomes ever more distorted closer to the horizon, the image of the camera would slow and then seem to freeze just shy of it. This is why astronomers originally referred to black holes as “frozen stars.”

At the event horizon, even space-time itself flows inward at the speed of light, the cosmic speed limit. Once inside it, both the camera and the space-time in which it's moving rush toward the black hole's center — a one-dimensional point called a singularity , where the laws of physics as we know them cease to operate.

“Once the camera crosses the horizon, its destruction by spaghettification is just 12.8 seconds away,” Schnittman said. From there, it’s only 79,500 miles (128,000 kilometers) to the singularity. This final leg of the voyage is over in the blink of an eye.

In the alternative scenario, the camera orbits close to the event horizon but it never crosses over and escapes to safety. If an astronaut flew a spacecraft on this 6-hour round trip while her colleagues on a mothership remained far from the black hole, she’d return 36 minutes younger than her colleagues. That’s because time passes more slowly near a strong gravitational source and when moving near the speed of light.

“This situation can be even more extreme,” Schnittman noted. “If the black hole were rapidly rotating, like the one shown in the 2014 movie ‘Interstellar,’ she would return many years younger than her shipmates.”

Five out of five stars all the way Dr. Cody Young took great care of me today - I was referred to this place by a friend to seek care after getting hurt in an accident Dr. Young was very attentive and very meticulous during the initial examination and paid great attention to detail to all my problematic areas, including the ones that I had not mentioned, but noticed. Afterwards, he demonstrated how he did adjustments, and then he proceeded to do an adjustment on me. I honestly felt like a new person afterwards and plan on going back for further care.

Photo of My W.

I initially visited Wellness Journey and had a positive experience with Dr. Kyle, who provided excellent care and expertise in holistic medicine. However, my subsequent sessions with Dr. Cody were disappointing. Dr. Cody's unprofessional attire and lack of hygiene were concerning, and his behavior during sessions, including leaving me on the table multiple times, was unacceptable. Furthermore, the transition to working with Dr. Cody due to my case being on a lien basis was not smooth, and I found his demeanor to be rude and lacking in the healing qualities I had experienced with Dr. Kyle. I would caution others against choosing a provider on a lien basis and specifically advise against working with Dr. Cody. It is important for practitioners to maintain professionalism, respect their clients, and prioritize hygiene, especially in close client interactions. While Dr. Kyle is skilled, it is evident that he may be overwhelmed with his workload. On the other hand, Dr. Cody would benefit from improving his professionalism and client care approach. In conclusion, I write this review to warn others and emphasize the importance of keeping track of appointments to avoid unexpected fees. I hope that this feedback serves as a helpful guide for those considering Wellness Journey for their holistic health needs."

I contacted Journey Wellness Center after being in a car accident and looking to find relief for my injuries. In return, I have been beyond pleased with the care Dr. Cody and Dr. Kyle provide and the results are phenomenal! I can not even begin to explain the total body healing I am experiencing in just over a month and a half. They are extremely devoted and skilled, and I highly recommend their services.

I'm very glad that I found journey wellness center! I have been to several different chiropractors in my life and appreciate the care and attention that Dr. Kyle provides. Five star rating all the way around.

Kyle is amazing at what he does! Not only is he a great chiropractor but he genuinely cares for your overall Heath/wellbeing.

Dr Young had provided chiropractic services to me for 2 months since I moved from out of town. I saw improvement within three sessions and am nearing maintenance-level frequency. He uses spinal manipulation along with neural balancing techniques most of the time. I have had treatment over the years from very competent chiropractic practitioners and Dr Young is my favorite. There are many issues to address. I have not availed myself of aromatherapy and nutritional services at this point.

Photo of Grace Y.

Dr. Kyle has cared for me on many occasions providing chiropractic care and nutritional balancing. One time I lifted wrong while moving several hundred pounds of horse feed. The next day I could not roll over or get out of bed. Kyle visited me for an extended house call and was able, through his easy non-force methods, to get the bulging disc in my lower back realigned so that I could function once again. He has cared for me on numerous other occasions for pounding headaches, pulsating pain in my lower legs, shoulder pain, and digestive issues. Under Kyle's care I have continued my journey to wellness and he has helped me to select nutritional supplements, modify my dietary intake, and live a healthier lifestyle. I have been under his care throughout his clinical work at Life Chiropractic College West and I have witnessed his work on numerous occasions with new patients. Kyle is truly a man who cares about people and I've never known anyone to work harder at developing his gifts. Kyle is very personable, gentle with people, very effective with children, and very caring. I have had the privilege of being present as Kyle has brought great relief to horses, dogs, and even a chicken that he adjusted for a neck injury! Kyle is truly a doctor for the whole family.

striving to present every man mature in Christ

Center For Biblical Counseling

VISIT CBC’s WEBSITE

Why do we exist? As our motto says, we are striving to present every man mature in Christ. This is taken from Colossians 1:28 which says, “Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man mature in Christ Jesus.”

This means that in all that we do we strive to exalt Jesus Christ. This is a Christ centered ministry, focused on helping the saints learn to purposefully walk with God so that they can please him in every way (2 Cor. 5:9), bring glory to God in all that they think, do, and say (Isa. 43:7), and to do it with great joy.

There are three groups we do this with: First, because people are hurting and looking for help, we see a number of people who do not yet know God. In this capacity, we serve as a evangelistic work. People are often at their wits end. They have tried doctors, and lawyers. They have sought out the “professionals” and not found help for their situation in life. Finally, they try the Biblical Counselors. “Perhaps I’ll find some peace and rest with one of those crazy Jesus people.” We give them a new Lord, and a new life. We give them Jesus, and he gives them rest and joy.

Second, Christians from all over the country, again because they are hurting, come to us for help with their problems in living. They are having marriage difficulties. Their children hate them, or their parents hate them. They are having strange things happen in their private lives. They don’t feel joy, or peace, or they are simply having trouble connecting with God. We offer Jesus and he gives them rest and joy.

The third group, are those folks who are generally doing well with the Lord and their fellow man. These people are focused on walking with God and have come to the place where they realize that they need to pass this relationship on to others around them. God continually brings people into their path who need help. They try to help, but they simply don’t know how. We offer Jesus and he gives them help to help.

If you fit into one of these groups, we exist to serve you and to help you come to Jesus in a way that helps.

New York sues anti-abortion groups for promoting false treatments to reverse medication abortions

New York is suing an anti-abortion group and almost a dozen pregnancy counseling centers for allegedly promoting an unproven method to reverse medication abortions

NEW YORK -- New York is suing an anti-abortion group and almost a dozen pregnancy counseling centers for promoting an unproven method to reverse medication abortions, Attorney General Letitia James announced Monday.

James, a Democrat, sued Heartbeat International and 11 pregnancy centers in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, arguing the groups violated laws around making false or misleading advertisements.

The case follows a similar lawsuit in California and other legal action in states such as Colorado regarding unsubstantiated treatments to reverse medication abortions.

Medication abortion is the most common way to end a pregnancy. The process involves taking two different drugs — mifepristone and misoprostol — days apart.

According to the New York lawsuit, the organizations promote a protocol called the “Abortion Pill Reversal," in which a person who has taken mifepristone is advised not to take the follow-up of misoprostol and instead is given repeated doses of the hormone progesterone.

The so-called “Abortion Pill Reversal" treatment has not been approved by federal regulators and major medical associations have warned that the protocol is unproven and unscientific, the lawsuit said.

“Abortions cannot be reversed. Any treatments that claim to do so are made without scientific evidence and could be unsafe,” James said in a statement.

Heartbeat International, in a statement, said the lawsuit is “a clear attempt to censor speech."

Gabbie Ewing’s journey from athlete to advocate

Former division ii soccer standout uses experiences to advance the lives of student-athletes.

For Gabbie Ewing, the impact of being a student-athlete will last a lifetime.

"I think my student-athlete experience has shaped me in every possible way," she said. "Without it, none of what I'm doing now exists."

The former soccer student-athlete at Concordia Portland had a highly successful college athletic career, scoring 22 goals and adding 18 assists in her 76 games with the Cavaliers. A Division II All-American, Ewing was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2017 and signed a contract to play professional soccer in Sweden following her graduation in 2019.

While Ewing eventually left her playing career behind, she never drifted very far from the athletic world and the community that left a lasting impact on her during her time as a student-athlete. Earning a master's degree in sports management from Solent University in the United Kingdom in 2022, Ewing eventually decided to channel her passion for the student-athlete experience into a career in college athletics.

A pivotal first step came in 2023 as Ewing was named a recipient of the NCAA's Ethnic Minorities and Women's Internship Grant. Awarded annually, the grant is designed to provide financial assistance to Division II and III member schools and conferences that are committed to enhancing representation in entry-level athletics administrative positions. This provided Ewing with the opportunity to take on the role of digital media and championships assistant for the Great Northwest, the same conference in which she competed as a student-athlete.

"Being named a recipient of this grant was so important because I (got) to be part of a group that is often underrepresented," Ewing said. "For me, as an Asian American woman, I think it is so important to have that representation. … This grant has helped give me the basic foundation to set me up for success later down the road."

While Ewing continued to develop her career as a sports professional at the conference, she also took on another monumental project within the athletic community: the founding of The Athlete Confidential.

Developed in 2023 by Ewing, The Athlete Confidential serves as a "community hub" where athletes can come together to tell and share stories about their experiences. Storytelling and discussion take place through a variety of channels, including Instagram, a podcast and a blog. It is a platform that was born out of Ewing's own experiences after finishing her athletic career, as well as her passion for bettering the lives of student-athletes. It focuses on exploring topics such as mental health, relationships, equality, athlete identity and life after sport.

"I decided to form my platform, The Athlete Confidential, really because I had my own struggles with mental health," Ewing said. "I needed a place to talk about it. I didn't know who to talk to, I didn't know how to talk about it. I just felt that I (couldn't) be the only one feeling this, and I didn't want other people to feel like they were alone in what they were going through."

Gabbie Ewing launched The Athlete Confidential - Presentation

Individuals are free to discuss sport-specific topics on the platform, such as performance goals, training plans and game tactics, but they are also encouraged to dive into human experiences and identities that exist outside of sport.

While the platform has allowed Ewing to connect with current and former NCAA athletes, it has also opened conversations with professional athletes, coaches and athletic trainers from across the country and throughout the world who understand and recognize the universal language of sports.

"We as individuals who play sports and have grown up playing sports — the way that we see the world is often through the lens of sport," she said. "That shapes a lot of our experiences and who we are. So The Athlete Confidential is really trying to communicate (with) people that can understand us and relate to us on a different level."

Since the platform was launched in January 2023, Ewing has received positive feedback and witnessed tremendous success. The platform has continued to grow and evolve rapidly both on a national and global scale.

"I think that this platform has made more of an impact than I anticipated when I first started," she said. "It just validates that people need to hear these stories. … It's important to continue sharing and keep moving the needle forward on these topics."

While The Athlete Confidential has continued to grow, Ewing's professional career has also continued to take steps forward, allowing her to continue to use her passion for bettering the student-athlete experience in her everyday life. Recently named the assistant athletic director for marketing at Western Washington, she has the opportunity once again to make an impact on student-athletes within the Great Northwest, an athletic community that has played a significant role in her development as an individual.

Wherever Ewing's career may take her in the future, she plans to rely on her own student-athlete experience to fuel her work while continuing to be an advocate for student-athletes everywhere.

"My long-term career goals are to continue helping and supporting student-athletes in whatever form that takes," she said. "I'm able to relate to the student-athletes because I've been there and I've experienced what they've been through. I think that is just going to help to propel me into a lot of success in the future."
