Thai National Parks

Doi suthep - pui national park, about doi suthep-pui.

Formerly known as Doi Aoy Chang, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is named after two mountains within the park; Doi Suthep and Doi Pui. Doi Suthep is where the hermit Sudeva lived on it's slopes for many years. The park is situated in Chiang Mai Province, only a few kilometers northwest of Chiang Mai City covering 265 km².

The park is separated into two areas not bordering each other; In south Doi Suthep and Doi Pui area where most of the major attractions and the headquarters are, 10 km further north is a smaller area around Mok Fa Waterfall.

The main attractions of the park are; Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Doi Pui Mountain, waterfalls, viewpoints and trails. The national park is one of the best in the country for hiking thanks to its “endless” trails throughout the park from all directions and elevations. Cycling is also very popular.

The mountains in the park are within the Thanon Thong Chai Range, most of its bedrock is granite. Two of the highest peaks in the park are Doi Pui which is the highest in the park at 1,685 meters asl and Doi Buak Ha.

Forests in the park consist of evergreen forest on higher altitudes above 1,000 meters and deciduous forest on lower. Some forest pockets in the gullies and along the streams are mixed deciduous-evergreen forest. Common trees include oaks, dipterocarps and trees of the magnolia family. There are nearly 2,000 species of ferns and flowering plants, nearly 360 species of birds and a good number of mammal species reported in the park.

The rainy season is May to November, August and September are the wettest period of the year with almost daily rainfall. The rest of the year is quite dry. The high altitudes of the park makes the climate cool and pleasant all year round, average temperatures are around 20-23 °C. During the winter months the temperatures may drop to as low as 5-6 °C, often around February.

A number of websites and a tourist information map at Doi Suthep claim that there is a cave called Tham Ruesi not too far from Doi Suthep Temple. It likely refers to some small rock shelter or a shrine. Noone seems to know where this cave is. There are no known caves in Doi Suthep, at least none of significant importance for visiting.

Despite being a busy place with quite a few villages in and around the park, there are some impressive mammal species recorded in the park.  Dholes , which are a very rare species of canids, have been spotted in the park just recently. Some of the other mammals seen in the park are;  Indian muntjacs ,  wild boars ,  Assam macaques ,  Indochinese serows ,  Asian golden cats ,  Malayan porcupines and Asian black bears .

Perhaps not as rich as the nearby Doi Inthanon in variety, but Doi Suthep has an impressive fauna of birds with over 350 reported species. Some of the bird species seen in the park are; black-headed greenfinches , brown bush warblers , Tristram's buntings , grey-winged blackbirds , dusky thrushes , chestnut thrushes , purple cochoas , chestnut-tailed minlas , yellow-browed tits , large blue flycatchers , Long-tailed thrushes and Himalayan cutias .

Doi Suthep bent-toed gecko (Cyrtodactylus doisuthep) is an endemic species currently only known to be found in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. Slender blind snakes (Indotyphlops porrectus), Himalayan mountain pit vipers (Ovophis monticola) and amboina box turtles (Cuora amboinensis) are a few of the many other reptile species found in the park. Pope's pit vipers (Trimeresurus popeiorum) are very common red-eyed pit vipers found on higher elevations of the park.

Few of the rare amphibian reported from the park are; Gordon's bug-eyed frogs (Theloderma gordoni), Chiang Mai newts (Tylototriton uyenoi), Chiang Mai caecilians (Ichthyophis youngorum), Sapa spadefoot toads (Leptobrachium chapaense) and Small horned toads (Megophrys parva)

Getting there & get around

The park is in easy reach of Chiang Mai by car or bike from the west end of the city (see map or " Get there & stay " section). Higher elevations beyond Doi Pui are better to be visited with a stronger terrain vehicle because of poor roads.

Getting to the park

It is possible to get to Doi Suthep Temple with a songthaew which is a converted pickup taxi. It can be tricky to find a convenient spot in Chiang Mai to jump into one. It takes less than 40 mins to reach the temple with the songthaew option.

Get around in the park

The best way to explore the park beyond the temple is by bike or car. Unless dressed warmly, taking a bike can be a very chilly experience that sometimes ends up with people getting cold, ruining their holiday.

It is also possible to explore the park by bicycle, but it can be a challenging experience while cycling uphill.

Tours & private transportation

Most of the park can easily be explored without a guide. But, to hike longer trails or get to more remote places like villages, coffee plantations etc, a guide with an English speaking guide is recommended. Guided tours can be booked via various tour operators, or on arrival to the hotels.

It is possible via this website to book a guided tour or a roundtrip taxi service with an experienced driver to take around to a few spots in the park and return to the hotel. See below;

  • Doi Suthep-Pui National Park trekking
  • Roundtrip taxi service to Doi Suthep or Doi Inthanon

Entrance fees & opening times

No entrance fee needs to be paid to enter Doi Suthep Temple or any other temples. The entrance fee applies only when camping or visiting major waterfalls. As of June 2022, the entrance fees for Doi Suthep-Pui National Park are 100 Baht for adults and 50 Baht for children 3-14 years old. Thai citizens pay 20 Baht for adults and 10 Baht for children.

The park premises like the campsites, visitor center and waterfalls are open daily from 8 am until 4 pm, but there are no time limits to enter the park.

The park can be visited for many types of activities suitable for most ages. The most popular activity is visiting the popular attractions along the main road like Doi Suthep Temple, waterfalls, Bhubing Palace (royal residence) and Doi Pui mountain & village.

There are many trails in the park, though most require guides because it is easy to get lost.

Copyright coolkengzz

Wildlife watching is not easy, it requires daily walking along the trails to eventually get a glimpse of elusive mammals of the park. Birdwatching is perhaps more easy. With a good variety of accessible roads/trails on various altitudes, it is possible to see a good number of birds over a day.

Stay & eat

There are two main camping areas in the park. One is north of Doi Pui Hmong Village and the other is at Mon Tha Than Waterfall not too far from the park entrance. See further below in the “attractions” section for more info and location of the campsites.

Accommodations

There are a good number of park accommodation in the headquarters area, Doi Pui Campground, Man Tha Than Waterfall Campground, and Mok Fa Waterfall Ranger Station. The price ranges from 400 Baht up to 3,000 Baht, a 20% discount applies when booked for Mon-Thu.

Headquarters of the park where many of these room options are found is located less than a kilometer northwest of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

The park accommodations can be booked through the  DNP website  in advance. As the money transfer must be done within 2 days and the fact that it takes time with transfers from abroad, it is only possible to book from within Thailand only. Payments can be done at 7-Eleven convenience stores or banks.

There are a good number of restaurants and cafes inside the park along the roads. Many options at Doi Suthep Temple and Doi Pui Village.

You are recommended to ask a Thai speaking person to call on your behalf.

Show on map

Generally referred as Doi Suthep Temple, it is a Theravada Buddhist temple with holy shrines, pagodas, statues and murals around. The temple is built near the peak of Doi Suthep mountain at 1055 meters above the sea level, 14.5 km from Chiang Mai City Center (Old City).

The first chedi is said to have been founded in the 14th century as a Buddist monastery and still is a working monastery. It is one of the most sacred sites in the region. Aspects of the temple draw from both Buddhism and Hinduism. A model of the Emerald Buddha and a statue of the Hindu God Ganesha can be found in the temple site.

The temple can be reached from the main road through the national park, accessible by walking 309 steps steep up or by tram for 30B. The way up is flanked by trees and Naga snake figures.

All visitors must take off their shoes and dress appropriately to enter the temple terrace. No shorts allowed and shoulders must be covered, there are clothes available for rent at the entrance.

Opening times are irregular, people seen in the temple from very early in the morning from around 5 to 6 am, closing around 7 pm.

Yod Doi Pui Campsite

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park has many waterfalls, here we list a few popular ones.

Mon Tha Than Waterfall, Trail & Campsite

A popular and quite often busy nine-tiered waterfall 3 km into the national park. Entering the park less than 1.5 kilometers, a side road on the right side will lead to this waterfall. Just a bit into this sideroad a checkpoint will be seen.

The waterfall area has a campsite and a few rooms available for booking through the DNP website from 1,500 Baht.

Huey Kaew Waterfall

A waterfall located at the edge of Chiang Mai City on a short walking distance from the main road near the park entrance. It is popular among local tourists. Lot of butterflies are seen around the waterfall.

A nearly 500 meters short trail from this waterfall ends up on the main road of the park.

Mok Fa Waterfall

Mok Fa or Mork Fa with various other spellings is a waterfall, accessible by car, bike or songthaew. The waterfall is located at the northmost edges of the park just 1.4 km from the highway 1095 to Pai. The waterfall is about 5-10 minutes walking distance from the car park.

There is a visitor center and a number of rooms for rent for 1,500 Baht per night.

A 100 Baht entrance fee for adults and 50 Baht for children will be charged to enter the waterfall.

Mae Sa Waterfall

A popular 10-tiered cascading waterfall along a nearly 2.5 km trail into the forest. The waterfall is located 5 km west of Mae Rim, about 600 meters off from highway-1096. There are few food vendors at the car park area.

Dtaat Mook Waterfall

Accessible by a short stroll from the nearby ranger station, it is a medium size waterfall with a bit less water flowing down during the dry seasons.

Bhubing Palace

Built in 1961, Bhubing Palace is the royal winter residence to accommodate the royal family during their visits to northern Thailand. The official name of the palace is Phra Tamnak Phu Phing.

The palace is 4 km west of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. There are a number of buildings including guesthouses for state visitors from abroad. The palace is open to the public except when the royal family is in the residence. The area is ideal for birdwatching, butterfly watching and has a good view over Chiang Mai. Opening times are 8:30 am to 4:15 pm, but sometimes may get closed as early as 3 pm.

The national park is full of trails, below we will list only a few popular ones. To see where these trials are on a map, just click the "show on map" link next to the title. Please do not ignore the guide requirement for certain trails as the park is full of crossing trails from different directions, it is very easy to get lost, particularly because not all trails are signposted well.

Buddha’s Footprint Trail

Starting from Doi Pui Hmong Tribal Village in the middle of the park, it is a 13 km trail. The trail head is right north of the village at about 1,320 meters asl. The highest point of the trail is at about 1,490 meters asl. Quite easy walk, but the length of it makes this trail a moderate one.

When walked clockwise, the trail gradually ascends to the start of a mountain ridge and follows the ridge north till the northernmost point, which after it descends and joins to another trail called False Buddha’s Footprint Trail all the way back to the same village.

A ranger or a guide is required to walk the trail. It may even be possible to arrange a local at the Hmong village for an unknown price.

Coordinates of the trailhead: 18.82038, 98.88296

Monk's Trail

One of the most known trails in Doi Suthep, starting from a trailhead west of Chiang Mai University and ending at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep.

It takes around 1.5 hours to walk this trail. Half way through this trail in about 45 minutes hiking is another temple, Wat Phra Lat which is near the main road into the park. Once on the road, the hikers need to walk a couple of hundred meters and continue the trail from the other side of the road.

Coordinates of the trailhead; 18.797678, 98.942200

Coordinates of the trailhead from the main road; 18.798995, 98.931719

Huay Tung Tao Circular Trail

It is a poorly maintained, nearly 7 km long circular trail. The trail is difficult to walk, not signposted and shouldn’t be walked without a ranger or a guide. The trail often fades away, making it difficult to guess what direction to walk.

The trailhead is near the Golden Buddha statue near the Huay Tung Tao Reservoir on the east edge of the national park. Half way through the trail there is a waterfall.

Coordinates of the trailhead: 18.86595, 98.93730

Chiang Mai's Wat Phra That Doi Suthep: The Complete Guide

doi suthep pui national park tour

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Chiang Mai is a city filled with temples. As you explore the Old City you can’t walk more than a few feet without seeing one and they are all well worth your time as a traveler. But one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples, the one that crowns the Doi Suthep mountain on the western outskirts of Chiang Mai, is definitely something that shouldn’t be missed. Planning a trip up the mountain to see the temple is a fairly easy endeavour from Chiang Mai and there are various ways to do it. No matter which option you choose, the views from the temple and the beauty of the surrounding area make for a worthwhile day trip from the city. Read on to find out more Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, getting there, and what to expect when you arrive.

Suthep itself is a district of western Chiang Mai city and one that gets its name from the adjacent mountain (doi means mountain in northern Thai), and the temple on the summit—Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, is found on the mountainside. The mountain, plus neighbouring Doi Pui, form Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. In terms of the impressive temple, construction on Wat Doi Suthep began in 1386 and according to popular legend, the temple was built to hold a piece of bone from the Buddha’s shoulder.

One of those bones was mounted on a sacred white elephant (an important symbol in Thailand) who then climbed Doi Suthep mountain and stopped near the peak. After trumpeting three times, the elephant laid down and gently passed away in the jungle. The place where he lay is now the site of where Doi Suthep’s temple was founded.

How to get to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

There are several ways to get yourself up Doi Suthep to see Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, including renting a car, a motorbike or scooter if you’re an experienced rider, hiking, getting a ride in a red songthaew (red trucks that act as shared taxis all over Chiang Mai), hiring a songthaew for the duration of your trip, or by doing a guided tour.

Driving: If you decide to drive yourself (either via car or motorbike), you’ll be taking the 1004 (also called Huay Kaew Road) towards the Chiang Mai Zoo and passing Maya Mall en route. The route is a straight one, but the road itself has some curves, so anyone with minimal motorbike or scooter experience should consider alternate transportation. But if you have your international drivers licence and feel comfortable riding, this is a good DIY option up the mountain. Drive until the road finally widens and you see the crowds and flags in the trees.

Taking a songthaew: One of the most popular ways to get to the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is via the many red songthaews that ply the streets of Chiang Mai. If you want to take one to the temple, they leave from Huay Kaew Road near the Zoo, costing 40 baht per person each way. Normally drivers wait for eight to 10 passengers before leaving.

You can also charter songthaews from anywhere in the city, which is a good option if you are traveling with a group. This should cost 300 THB for one way (as many people as you can fit), or 500 THB if you want the driver to wait at the top and bring you back down after visiting the temple.

Hiking : Anyone in the mood for some exercise can opt to hike up to the temple, via Suthep Road, past Chiang Mai University to find the start of the hike. When you see a green area, you'll notice some billboards and a sign reading “Nature Hike”. Turn right onto this narrow road, go straight for about 100 meters then take the first (and only) left. Follow the road to the trail head.

Once you get to the base of the temple, you have two options for getting up to it. You can walk up the 306 steps if you’re feeling energetic, or you can take funicular-style cable car, which runs from 6.00 am – 6.00 pm. The fee is 20 THB for Thais and 50 THB for foreigners.

Once you’re up the mountain (via whatever method you’ve chosen), you’ll see a large cluster of souvenir stands and stalls selling food and drinks before you head up to the temple. Grab a snack if you’re hungry, and then it’s time to climb the 306-step staircase (or take the funicular). The staircase is flanked by beautiful jeweled naga (ornate serpents) and as you walk, the majestic staircase is a great spot to take pictures.

The terrace at the top of the steps is where you’ll find a statue of the white elephant that (as legend has it) carried the Buddha relic to its resting place on the temple grounds. This is also where you’ll find various other shrines and monuments to explore. The temple is split into outer and inner terraces and steps lead to the inner terrace where there is a walkway around the golden Chedi (shrine) enshrining the relic. The grounds are lush and peaceful and there are many spots for good photo ops or just simple quiet contemplation.

What to Expect

Plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring the temple and surrounding area and if you have more time, there’s the option to hike various trails and swim in waterfalls in the national park that is home to the temple. Entrance to the temple costs 50 THB per person and as you’re planning your trip, remember that dress needs to be respectable, meaning modest and shoulders and knees should be covered. If you forget, wraps are available if needed. You’ll also need to remove your shoes upon entering the temple.

Something else to remember is that Wat Phra That Doi Suthep can get very busy, so if you can, try to time your visit for as early as possible during the day. Otherwise, a day trip to the temple makes for a refreshing and culturally interesting day (or half-day) excursion from Chiang Mai.

It’s no secret that Chiang Mai is home to many temples, which you may have seen several of on a visit to the Northern Thai city. But even if you’ve had your fill of temples (or think you’ve seen them all), planning a trip to see Wat Doi Suthep is worth your time, even if just for the photo-worthy views.

In addition to those aforementioned views, the golden, gleaming temple itself is highlight, but don’t rush your visit. There’s something beautiful to see at every turn.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple also houses a meditation center, where both locals and visitors can learn and practice meditation.

Doi Suthep Pui National Park is the 4th highest mountain in Thailand, and the hike is totally worth it. It is a relatively short hike compared to Doi Inthanon (which is the highest mountain in Thailand), but still, you will go pretty far up the mountain, thus be sure to gear up before you go.

2. Doi Suthep Temple

Doi suthep, chiang mai travel, wat phra that doi suthep,

The elephant is said to have climbed up Doi Suthep , stopped, trumpeted three times, then dropped dead. After that, the Thai King at the time immediately ordered the construction of a temple at the site.

Some people are not big fans of seeing people as a tourist attraction as they think it is artificial. But in Hmong hill tribe village, tourism is not the sole or main income, and you can still experience their rustic lifestyle that is not so contrived. They are not people sitting around in clothes from hundreds of years ago, pretending to live a life that doesn’t reflect present reality. They are very proud of their heritage, keen to share their lives with the world.

Plus, you can buy some handmade souvenirs made by the local Hmong, and there is no hard sell of anything.

Doi Suthep-pui National Park

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is a mountainous area located right next to Chiang Mai and is popular with travellers to Chiang Mai looking to spend a day in the outdoors.

The National Park is home to the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep as well the Bhubing Palace , numerous waterfalls and lookouts.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Waterfall & Temple Tour, Chiang Mai Thailand

Bhubing Palace was the official residence of Thailand’s Royal Family during the cold winter season. In addition, this was the place where the royal family stayed on official visits to the northern part of the country. The palace also doubles up as the royal accommodation for guests of the state from international circles.

Whilst visiting Doi Suthep-Pui National Park , stop by the waterfalls located here including Huai Rap Sadet Waterfall, Monthathan Waterfall and Dtaat Mook Waterfall.

Many people also come to the national park to go hiking or camping. Yod Doi Pui Campsite is located approximately 4kms north of Bhubing Palace and is a great place for travellers to set up camp. There are toilets, food stalls and a visitors centre which rents out mountain bikes.

So come up to Doi Suthep-Pui National Park for a great day in the outdoors, not too far of a drive from the Old City in Chiang Mai .

Is the walk to Dtaat Mook Waterfall an easy or difficult walk? How long is it?

We are assessing if this is suitable for bringing along a 3.5 year old with us.

You can hike to Dtaat Mook Waterfall without a guide, however it would be difficult for a 3.5 year old. The trail isn’t marked and there are many branching trails to get lost if you don’t know where you are going. The hike is about 3kms long.

Best regards, Jess

  • Things to do

I only need accommodations for part of my trip

Visit Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

The Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is a spectacular natural zone known for its majestic palace, impressive temple and royal history. The country’s monarchs stay here during winter trips to northern Thailand. Examine the great range of plants and animals that make up this picturesque park.

Capture photos of the dramatic skyline, with its three peaks of Doi Suthep, Doi Buak Ha and Doi Pui. The tallest mountain in the park, Doi Pui has a summit at 5,528 feet (1,685 meters) high. Hike up the mountains for the excellent panoramic views. Bring clothing layers to cope with the change to cool temperatures at the top.

The park contains evergreen forests at altitudes above 3,000 feet (1,000 meters) and deciduous forests below this elevation. Spot oak and magnolia trees among the flowering plants and ferns in the dense woodland. The forest floor is home to Asian black bears, Malayan porcupines, wild boars and many others. Bring binoculars to see the blue-throated barbet, the scops owl and the white-crested laughing thrush.

Gaze up at the majestic waterfalls flowing over tropical vegetation and mossy cliffs. See the nine-tiered Mon Tha Than Waterfall and the smaller Huey Kaew Waterfall, which is near the park entrance. The flow is stronger during the wet season from May to November. Stay at the Yod Doi Pui Campsite, which has a visitor center and restaurant. Practice star-gazing at night in this clear and serene setting.

In addition to natural features, the park is known for its religious and royal structures. Marvel at the holy shrines, pagodas and murals in the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple. Arrive at the nearby Bhubing Palace, which is the winter residence for the king and his family.

Dress fairly formally to visit the palace and temple. There is a fee to enter the national park, with discounts available for children.

The Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is in the hills that make up the northwestern outskirts of Chiang Mai. Take a taxi or drive northwest from the city center for about 35 minutes to get here.

Reviews of doi suthep-pui national park.

Nothing to see here...only Wat Doi Suthep.

5/5 - Excellent

We used tour agency in our hotel. Bee was very helpful.

Careful walking up steps to temple when it is wet

Beautiful temple. Skip the winter palace nearby, you only get to see the gardens, as the house is closed to tourists

My husband and I hired a driver to take us up to Doi Suthep from Chiang Mai. We first requested to stop at the President’s palace gardens which are not far away. I was wearing capris that went below my knees, but the dress code there was very strict and the palace gate officials said no to my attire, and I had to walk to the nearby outdoor market and buy a 100 baht pair of long pants (very reasonable cost). The gardens are beautiful and well worth a visit. There is a nice water feature with koi fish at one part. There are also nice and cool shade gardens to stroll thru. After the gardens we visited Doi Suthep. Because we did not want to keep our driver waiting too long, we did not walk up the long stairway, but rode the funicular up to the top. The Wat and all associated buildings and Buddha’s are wonderful. The view looking down to Chiang Mai was quite hazy, but it’s a nice overlook. The Bouganvilla (know I botched the spelling of this flower), was especially pretty at the top. We did walk down the over 300 steps, and I held on to the Naga for protection most of the way down. It’s a lovely place to visit. The drive up and back is quite winding, so be prepared for it.

Dense forests and mountains in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

Getty Images/Lonely Planet Images

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

Often bearing a crown of clouds, sultry Doi Suthep (1676m) and Doi Pui (1685m) are two of northern Thailand's most sacred peaks. A dense cloak of jungle envelops the twin summits, which soar dramatically on the fringes of Chiang Mai. A 265-sq-km area on the slopes of the mountains, encompassing both summits, is preserved as a national park.

It attracts hordes of nature-lovers, and legions of pilgrims who come to worship at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep .

As you climb, lowland rainforest gives way to cloud forest, full of mosses and ferns, providing a haven for more than 300 bird species and 2000 species of ferns and flowering plants. The park is also a renowned destination for mountain biking, and several Chiang Mai–based agencies run technical mountain-biking tours along trails that were once used as hunting and trade routes by hill-tribe villagers.

The park accommodation makes a comfortable base from which to explore and a trail runs for 2km from the campground to the summit of Doi Suthep, though the only view is of eerie mists swirling between the trees.

As with other national parks in the area, Doi Suthep is blessed with many thundering waterfalls, including Nam Tok Monthathon , about 2.5km off the paved road, which surges into a series of pools that hold water year-round. Swimming is best during or just after the monsoon, but you'll have to pay the national park fee to visit. Closer to the start of the road to Doi Suthep, Nam Tok Wang Bua Bahn is free, and full of frolicking locals, although this is more a series of rapids than a proper cascade.

Above the Bhubing Palace are a couple of Hmong villages. Ban Doi Pui is off the main road and is basically a tourist market at altitude; it's more interesting to continue to Ban Kun Chang Kian , a coffee-producing village about 500m down a dirt track just past the Doi Pui campground (ask the park staff for directions). Rót daang (literally 'red trucks', operating as shared taxis) run from the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep parking lot to both Ban Doi Pui (60B) and Ban Kun Chang Kian (200B return).

The entrance to the park is 16km northwest of central Chiang Mai. Shared rót daang leave from Chiang Mai University (Th Huay Kaew entrance) to various points within the national park. One-way fares start at 50B to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and 80B to Bhubing Palace. You can also charter a rót daang for a half-day of exploring for around 600B.

Doi suthep-pui national park.

The Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is just north of Chiang Mai. This National Park was established in 1981. It was to protect the temple’s surroundings and the diverse forest ecosystems of the mountain. Doi Suthep provides a magnificent green backdrop to Chiang Mai.

Doi Suthep, Doi Buakha, and Doi Pui are the three main peaks in the park. The highest peak, Doi Pui, rises to 1,685 meters above sea levels. The park covers roughly 261 square meters. The park boasts several waterfalls: Huay Kaew, Montathan, Mork Fa, Tad Mok, Mae Sa, and Mae Yi waterfalls.

History of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

I have been looking for the earliest mentioning of Doi Suthep in books and other records. Research is ongoing. The German botanist Carl Curt Hosseus (1878-1950) visited Northern Siam between 1904 and 1906, the first European botanical expedition to Siam. In his book ‘Through King Chulalongkorn’s Kingdom (1904-1906): The First Botanical Exploration of Northern Thailand’, published in 1912, he describes his trip to Doi Suthep. The first botanical collections from northern Siam were made by him, as he himself did not forget to stress.

Arthur Kerr, the father of Thai botany

Irish botanist A.F.G.Kerr (1877–1942), a medical doctor turned botanist, lived in Chiang Mai from roughly 1903 until 1913. He appears on a group picture that adorns the wall of the Gymkhana Club members in Chiang Mai. Kerr is recognized as the ‘founding father’ of Thai botany.

In the early days in Chiang Mai, he was the Medical officer of Health for the Siamese government. Gradually plants and flowers became his first passion. Later he lived and worked in Bangkok. In the Directory for Bangkok and Siam of 1925 , he appears as the Director of the Botanical Section of the Ministry of Commerce. He traveled extensively through the whole country and came back to Chiang Mai regularly.

The Kerr collection at Kew Herbarium

Kerr built a hut at about 650m elevation at a location called Hui Chieng Kien. This might be near the current Hmong village, Ban Chang Khian. He also spent time at the Chawngcheng Sanatorium, a resort for missionaries in the hot season. Missionary Dr. James McKean was a good friend of Kerr.

Kerr left an enormous legacy of trip reports, photographs, drawings, and high-quality dried plant specimens of plants and flowers. You can find the Kerr collection at Kew Herbarium at Kew Gardens in London. Many of his plant and flower specimens can be found online. An ambitious plan to digitize his more than 3,000 photographs and itineraries have never materialized. I visited Kew Herbarium in August 2019 and copied many of his photographs. I am not allowed to share them, though.

Bungalows on Doi Suthep before World War Two

It is not easy to find out how many and which structures were on Doi Suthep before World War Two. The Wat Prathat Doi Suthep had been there for centuries and Wat Pha Lat, the forest temple, as well. Kerr built his little hut probably around 1910. The Chawncheng Sanatorium was at an elevation of 1650m, well above the Doi Suthep temple.

Above the temple were the bungalows of the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation (BBTC) and Edward Hutchinson, a BBTC employee who retired in 1925. The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation was a British company involved in the teak industry in North Thailand.

Arthur Queripel, another BBTC employee, owned a bungalow on Doi Suthep, but I am not sure where. Close to the BBTC bungalows was a missionary bungalow, but it was not the sanatorium I mentioned earlier. More research is needed.

Staying on the mountain

The British Consulate in Chiang Mai had a bungalow on Doi Suthep. British Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary Robert Greg visited Chiang Mai in 1922 and spent two nights in the consular bungalow. The story of Greg’s visit you can find here .

Some of the British employees of the BBTC stayed for up to six weeks on the mountain. In the early 1930s, Peter Pointon, the BBTC forest manager in Lampang, invited Bill and Ursula Streatfeild to stay in a bungalow on Doi Suthep. Bill worked for the BBTC in Bangkok. You can find Ursula’s story about that trip here .

Dara Rasami’s Rose Garden

Dara Rasami (1873-1933) was one of the princess consorts of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V. After the King’s passing in 1910, she returned to Chiang Mai in 1914. Until her own death, she spent time in her Rose Garden, which probably was close to or at the current Bhubing Flower Garden location, next to the Bhubing Palace. King Rama VII and Queen Rambai Barni visited Chiang Mai in January 1927. They also visited the Rose Garden of Dara Rasami during their stay.

The Road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

In late 1934 followers of the monk, Kruba Srivichai , started constructing a road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The road opened for traffic on April 30, 1935. Chin Ngow, a businessman of Chinese descent, drove the car that brought Kruba Srivichai and Luang Sri Prakad, the mayor of Chiang Mai, to the base of the stairs to the temple.  A famous photograph that was taken on that day shows Kruba Srivichai with both men and his followers at the stairs’ base.

Trekking in the National Park

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is a fantastic destination for trekking and hiking. There is a network of trails that probably is centuries old. It is not easy to find the trails on your own. National Park authorities are not keen on visitors hiking in the park on their own. In the dry season, the park is usually closed for trekking to prevent forest fires. The most popular trail is the well-known Monk’s Trail that starts behind Chiang Mai Zoo. The trail leads to Wat Pha Lat, from where you can easily find the trail leading all the way to the temple.

Green Trails trekking in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

At this moment, we offer a great one-day trek . The forest is beautiful, and the views are amazing. Everyone who is in reasonable shape can do this trek. Our hike starts in Doi Pui Hmong village and ends in Ban Mae Sa Mai village , the largest Hmong community in Northern Thailand. Before we start trekking, we visit Wat Pra that Doi Suthep , the most famous Chiang Mai landmark. We also offer a great two-day tour that gives insight into Ban Mae Sa Mai’s daily life.

This includes the same-day trek from Doi Pui village to Baan Mae Sa Mai overnight in Baan Mae Sa Mai. Even though the Doi Suthep/Doi Pui National Park is close to Chiang Mai, we seldom meet other tourists on the trails. We have organized several educational tours to Baan Mae Sa Mai for exchange students from the United States for the non-profit organization USAC .

Other activities near Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

It is possible to combine Doi Suthep-Pui National Park with a visit to the Mae Sa Valley. You can find the Mae Sa Waterfall , Thai Elephant Care Center , and the Eagle Track zipline in this valley. The Mae Sa Waterfall is within the boundary of the National Park.

The Mae Sa Valley has various activities and tourist sights, including bungy jumping, orchid farms, snake shows, etc… Visiting the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden is also an option.

The Royal Project on Doi Suthep

The Thai monarch, Rama IX, Bhumibol Adulyadej , who initiated development projects on Doi Suthep, became known as the Royal Project. The Hmong people lived in abject poverty, grew opium, and destroyed the forest on Doi Suthep. Under the king’s guidance, the government started an opium eradicating program, moved the Hmong people to a new location lower on the mountain, and started experimenting with cash crops as a substitute for opium cultivation .

Baan Mae Sa Mai, Baan Doi Pui , and Baan Chang Kien people hold the King in very high esteem in the Hmong villages. He helped them build a better life and allowed them to stay in the national park under conditions.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the most famous Buddhist temple of Chiang Mai and North Thailand. It is a significant pilgrimage spot for followers of Buddhism. The temple’s view deck offers spectacular views of Chiang Mai and its surroundings, if you are lucky with the weather. The temple attracts a huge number of local and foreign visitors and features in every Chiang Mai tour. The naga staircase of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is famous and appears in many photos.

Forests of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

There are roughly two types of forest on the mountain: Deciduous forest below about 1,000 m elevation and evergreen forest above. There are two kinds of deciduous forest in the park: deciduous dipterocarp-oak Forest in the driest areas and mixed evergreen, deciduous forest along streams and gullies. Common species are trees of the families Dipterocarpaceae, Fagaceae, and Magnoliaceae. In November, you can observe the rare Sapria Himalayana, related to the Rafflesia. Fauna in the park

Wildlife in the Doi Suthep-Pui National park includes common muntjac, wild boar, macaque, and other small mammals. Wildlife in the park is rarely seen. The park is a paradise for bird lovers. More than 300 species of birds can be seen here, including red junglefowl, pheasants, eagles, parrots, bulbuls, and minivets.

The forest restoration activities of FORRU, the Forest Restoration Unit of Chiang Mai University, seem to have resulted in several small mammals’ returns. Villagers of Baan Mae Sa Mai told me there were four “tigers” living in the protected forest above their village. These are probably small wild cats. The chance that you will see wildlife in the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is slim.
