  • Its year-round tropical climate and immense biodiversity.
  • It is the rainiest of all the U.S. National Forests.

  • Although there are no trails that presently accommodate wheelchair traffic, there are plans for a handicapped access trail soon.
  • The Forest is a Trash-Free Zone – Take your Garbage with you.
  • Flash Flooding: Be alert for changing weather conditions. A rapid rise of water can strike rivers with little or no warning.
  • Mongoose Safety: Mongooses can be infected with rabies.  Do not approach them at any time.  If you observe an animal acting strangely, please report its location and behavior as quickly as possible to the nearest U.S. Forest Service employee.

  • Chevron down What To Bring & Wear:
  • Comfortable Clothing: Lightweight, synthetic clothing or a swimsuit is the best.
  • Small Backpack: A small backpack can be useful for carrying personal items, snacks, and water.
  • Sturdy Footwear: While water shoes can be useful for water activities, they might not provide sufficient support for extensive walking. It’s advisable to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good traction for walking on uneven terrain. If any of the activities involve water, participants can bring both water shoes and regular walking shoes, depending on the specific plans.
  • Sunscreen: Apply and bring sunscreen with a high SPF to protect against the sun, especially if your group will be spending time outdoors.
  • Insect Repellent: Consider bringing insect repellent to guard against mosquitoes and other insects.
  • Come prepared to get wet:  bring a change of cloth and towel just in case you want to swim. Wear rubber soles hiking shoes or sneakers no flipflops; slippery and moist conditions exist on all Forest paths and trails.
  • Rain Gear: As the rainforest can be unpredictable, a lightweight rain jacket or poncho may come in handy, specially in “El Yunque Rainforest”, one of the wettest places on Earth with an average of 200 inches of rain every year.
  • Water Bottle: Hydration is crucial, so encourage participants to bring a reusable water bottle to stay refreshed.
  • Snacks: Pack some energy-boosting snacks for the journey, hiking takes a lot of energy.
  • Personal Medications: Ensure that participants bring any necessary personal medications.
  • Chevron down What Not To Bring & Wear:
  • Avoid wearing jeans or sweats.
  • Wearing the right clothes will help make your outdoor experience enjoyable
