We usually try to reserve judgment of a shaft until later in the review.

But this time, we’re breaking character by claiming in the introduction that the Graphite Design Tour AD DI is a truly remarkable shaft.

We’ll reserve the details for later in the review but we will say that we can clearly see why some of the most prolific Tour Pros game these shafts.

If you haven’t considered the Graphite Design Tour AD DI shaft for your woods you need to read this review and then go get a fitting.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft Overview

Let’s start with looks.

It appears as though Graphite design puts all their time and effort into engineering and saves money on their design department.

The shaft, which is available in a black or orange color scheme, looks busy. The midsection is lousy with logos and lettering.

We prefer the black and white finish to the gaudy orange and white color scheme.

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is available in a dizzying array of weights and flexes.

The weight ranges from 54g to 97g. Graphite Design seemingly wanted to appeal to as many golfers as possible and they have succeeded.

No matter what your swing speed is, you can pick up a Graphite Design Tour AD DI shaft in a weight that works for you.

The feel of this shaft is definitely active. The kick point is advertised as mid; but we would actually say that it is a bit closer to the butt than true mid.

Why is the  Graphite Design Tour AD DI So Popular?

When a shaft is used by players like Tiger Woods, it’s going to get some attention.

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI has been used by some of the biggest names in golf; but there are weights and flexes for us mortals too.

How Does the Graphite Design Tour AD DI Perform?

Depending on which weight class you choose, you’re either going to get a high or mid launch from this shaft.

The amazing thing about it though is that even the lightest version of the Graphite Design Tour AD DI can produce low spin rates.

In our test session, we never saw the spin rates exceed 2000 RPM’s. For the most part, spin was relegated to the 1800-1900 RPM range.

The stiff tip section also kept dispersion very tight. Our offline divergence never drifted into the double-digit (yards) range.

Carry distance was good too. After three swings each, we were averaging 268.8 yards. The Graphite Design Tour AD DI ticked nearly all of the boxes for us.

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Lite flex is suitable for 71-85 MPH swingers.

Regular flex is good for 86-95 MPH swingers. Players in the 92-98 MPH range should check out the Graphite Design Tour AD DI in stiff/regular flex.

Stiff flex may be suitable for players in the 96-105 MPH range. Extra stiff is for players in the 100-105 MPH range. Tour extra stiff should work for players swinging their driver 110+ MPH.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is available in a wide variety of weights.

If you’re in the 70-85 MPH swing speed range, you’re probably going to want to stay between 54 and 64 grams.

86-95 MPH swingers will want to stay within the 75-85 gram weight class. For 96+ MPH swingers, there is the 86-97 gram weight class.

While we wouldn’t say it is as smooth as the Mitsubishi Tensei shafts, it is still amazingly fluid for having such an active profile.

Key Features & Performance

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI utilizes aerospace-grade, high modulus 50-ton carbon fiber in order to stiffen the tip section.

While the mid and butt sections are of medium stiffness, the tip is stiff in order to promote acute club head control.

This is part of what produces such tight shot dispersion.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Driver Review

When plugged into our driver, the Graphite Design Tour AD DI felt incredibly easy and smooth to swing.

It can stand up to a really heavy load and the release feels phenomenally fluid. The dispersion is tight enough to keep you out of the trees but there is also some workability for better players.

When we plugged the Graphite Design Tour AD DI into a 3-wood, we still got tight dispersion whether we were swinging from the box or off the deck.

What Are The Differences Between Graphite Design Tour AD DI 6 and 7

Flex Option

AD DI 6 & 7 flex

The first difference between the AD DI 6 and 7 shafts is the choice of flex. AD DI 6 offers three different types of flex; Regular, Stiff, and X-Stiff and AD DI 7 has two flex options: Stiff and X-Stiff.

The quicker your swing, the stronger the flex you require, as golf shafts bend according to how quick your club speed is. So, you should select the shaft based on the sort of swing you have.

AD DI 6 is required if you desire regular flex, which means you have a slower swing speed. However, you can pick either of the shafts if you need stiff or X-stiff.

Weight

Another common difference between these two shafts is the different weight options they offer.

The AD DI 6 shaft has lower weight options; of 64, 65, 67, and 68.5 grams, and the AD DI 7 shaft has comparatively higher weight options of 74, 75, and 77 grams.

Your swing path is improved with a heavier shaft and you use more muscle when you play with a heavier shaft.

The route of the shaft on the downswing should originate from within the aiming reticle for every 10 grams of weight.

Even though the difference in the launch is not that significant between these two shafts. It is still important as even the slightest difference in launch can play a huge role in overall ball flight and distance. 

There are Mid High launch angle choices for both AD DI 6 and AD DI 7. The Mid choice will keep the ball somewhat lower off the tee, while the Mid-High option will help gain a bit extra height underneath the ball.

However, the AD DI 6 also has a High option. While the AD DI 7 has a Mid option. Conversely, a high launch driver enables golfers with slower swings to produce soaring shots for maximal carry distance. 

Therefore, you may choose the shaft that is best for you based on where you want the impact to be.

Spin

Spin is another important consideration while selecting the shaft. Different shafts offer different types of spin, and the same goes between AD DI 6 and AD DI 7. 

The AD DI 6 shaft offers two different spin options; Low Mid and Low, and the AD DI 7 shaft offers low spin only. The low mid spin has a slightly higher spin than the low spin. 

Generally, a low-spin driver can lower your spin rates resulting in a more piercing launching if your swing speed is quick and your ball rises in the air.

A machine that measures shaft torque tracks how much a shaft will twist in response to a specific quantity of force and does so in degrees. 

Depending on what type of flex you choose, these two shafts also have a difference in torque. 

Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7 has torque in the range of 3.1-3.2 degrees compared to the 3.3-3.4 degrees of the AD DI 6 shaft. So, when playing shot, the AD DI 7 will have less twisting than the AD DI 6.

It seems I am reviewing a sleeper here!

I recently purchased an AD HD 7x driver shaft and wanted to share my initial thoughts.  Often times when I purchase new equipment I don't feel compelled to review it because (1) I don't love it THAT much and (2) there are already countless threads singing it's praises.

I will start by saying this isn't a Trackman numbers based review, it's real life, grass driving range swings in a TSi3 10*.

I have gamed an Aldila Rogue White 7X flex in my driver for the last two years.  Before that I played a Tour AD DI 7x for the better part of a decade.  I moved to the White because I started to find the AD DI felt a little "loose."  (However, when I take my old AD DI 7x, 915D3 combo to the range I immediately wonder why I ever let it go.). The White isn't sexy, it's not premium, heck, it's not even the once universally drool inducing "TX" version of the White (owned it, liked it, just not as much). Just the plan ole X flex White!

Given that the White X isn't sexy, I've worked unreasonably hard to kick it out of the bag.  Yet, it remains.

I have tried the White 1k TX, the Orange 1k TX, the Ventus Blue TR 6x and the Ventus TR 7x this year.  After multiple range session with the aforementioned shafts I always come back to the White X.

Fast forward to this week when I have been testing the AD HD 7x.  Let's just say I love it more than my ex-wife who had vicious ADHD (sorry, couldn't resist).  

The shaft was comfortable from the start and I attribute that to the lineal nature of the flex.  As all the previous technical reviews have said, it basically has a similar stiffness in the butt, mid and tip.  What this results in for me is a very straight ballflight with consistent height, no matter how good or bad of a swing I put on the ball.  it's really just remarkably consistent.

As my "relationship" with this shaft moves forward, I will be sure to review it more.  However, my initial impression is that this is a HIGHLY underrated and reviewed shaft here on WRX.

Seems you've also hit a bunch of GD shafts. Did you tip them? Which was the best GD shaft for you (even though you're in the TPO now)? Have you hit the TP or IZ?

I will be testing the XC, IZ, and UB this week, and the UB is tipped .5".

They've been tipped one inch.  I really enjoyed the UB out the bunch.  My cousin has the TP so yes and I've tested the IZ.

I 100% agree about the UB. Probably best feeling GD I have hit and I have basically hit them all at this point. UB would still be in my bag if not for the Ventus Black. I should have tipped my UB though and it probably would have been closer..

The UB is such an awesome fairway wood shaft. 

I have three fairway woods right now -- a 3W with the HD 7X and a 5W with a DI 8X that are my gamers, and a 3W with a UB 7X that I'm also really loving (and honestly I need to sell one of the 3Ws, but I just can't decide which one I like best).

I think the UB a terrific blend of everything that makes Graphite Design shafts so good. Its softer handle and mid-section feel amazing and help keep my tempo and transition from speeding up too much -- which is the same reason the DI has worked really well for me for a long time. But it's more stable and keeps the ball flight down a little compared to the DI. It also has a bit of the HD's crispness and snappiness through impact. 

I've definitely been thinking about switching from the DI 8X to a UB 8X with my higher-lofted fairway wood. I'm mostly just hanging tight until I get a chance to try the TSR woods and see if Titleist offers the UB as a custom option.

How does the GP compare to others you've played or tried? It's one of the only GD shafts I haven't hit, and I've been curious about it.

@eric61 :  It is very tip-stiff.  The XC is the only other GD shaft I've hit that feels as stable in the tip. Note that I've never hit the M9003, which is supposed to be the most stable shaft in their lineup.

I feel more mid-shaft hinge in the GP than I do in the XC.  Probably why I get along with the XC better.  GP and BB felt pretty close.  When I slowed down my transition with the GP I could play a nice cut.  But if I stepped on it, the left side came into play.

All other GD shafts I've hit (DI, VR, MT) felt softer and all of them went left.  Though the VR was more of a controlled draw, so I probably could have made that work if I had to.

From softest (most left friendly) to stiffest (least left friendly) to me: DI, MT, VR, GP, BB, XC

Good to know! It sounds like the exact reasons the XC was better for you would make the GP better for me. I like a stiff tip and a mid-hinge in driver shafts. I get that to an extent with the HD, but imagine the GP might be a little lower-launching and more abrupt in its transition from softer to stiffer areas?

They're both softer in the handle, so if you like a white board type profile, it might be worth testing.

GP and HD a very similar launch IMO.  If anything the HD might launch one degree higher.  They feel different though.  HD is smooth with a little bit of kick to it whereas the GP has a little kick but also less feel IMO.  I'm willing to bet that it has to do more with the materials used more specifically the T1100 in the HD which gives it better/smoother feel.

I sprayed the ball all over the place with the DI. UB is much more stable IMO and feels smoother.  I struggling with the lefts atm with the ZF especially when I step on it in my 3 metal so I'm contemplating whether I should wait for the Kai'li Blue, TPB 1K or possibly go with something else like the UB or HD.  Thing is, the ZF just feels right/good. Decisions, decisions.........

To me the GP has less feel as well.  I’m not sure what it is honestly.  I think the HD has the fast taper technology that the TP and VR have so that may have something to do with it.

It's weird, but you either love stiff handle shafts or hate them.  I did fare well with the Ventus Black but didn't love the way it felt.  Nowadays I'm rolling with linear low/low shafts but like the softer handle shafts aka white board profile.  Something about the UB where it feels really good but doesn't feel all loose and whippy.  Just a tiny kick at the bottom for me yet so stable.

I thought I liked more of a blueboard profile but through learning about GD shafts from experienced players like yourself, and trying many models, I have found I do well with a stable shaft that has a softer handle so it does not feel too stiff. (In Ventus, I am a fan of the Red.)

I have the XC in driver and the BB in a fairway and if I switched, would probably be for the UB. I like how the softer handle lets me feel the club shallowing at the top. Helps me to be patient with my shoulders/arms so they arrive on time, after my lower body, instead of the other way around. I can hit lots of shafts, but a shaft that helps my sequence puts the ball in the fairway more.

I find the XC easy to fade or draw and it is smoother by a smidge than the BB. GD shafts feel so smooth and yet solid, that’s my favorite thing about them.

I am a GD guy and have pretty much played all except the XC. Played the HD for months and keep getting fit into the TP and using it for the third time in a Rogue ST now. Feels ok, goes a little high and don’t feel the same kick as the HD (which got loose).  IZ is a bomber for sure, but too high now for my swing changes. More positive AOA now.   

How would the UB compare? XC sounds interesting as I liked WB shaft years ago. Been fit into the TPW twice too. Should I give the UB or XC for my next trial?

I have TP in my fairways and I'm testing the UB and XC tommorow along with the IZ in driver.

UB was more anti-left for me than the HD or TP.  It's actually mid-low for me very much like the GP and XC but has the best feel out of the bunch.  The difference between the UB and XC is that XC has very stiff mid whereas the UB is soft.  Still, the UB doesn't feel really loose and soft in the middle like the DI did for me.  It's probably the most stable tip stiff, soft mid shaft I've ever had.  Are you hard loader/aggressive transition player or smooth?  The XC seems to hold up a little better for the aggressive player IMO.  I know it's one of my favorite GD shafts besides the UB.

Thanks man. I have an aggressive transition. Maybe the XC would be worth a try? Tired of the TP going left and high. Of course, it’s a driver head and swing issue, but anything can help.

XC is definitely worth a try.  The trade off is that it's not as smooth as the UB.

Shaft Test: Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP versus the famous Tour AD-DI

With a similar profile to the company’s famous Tour AD-DI shaft, and a few new technologies for a slightly different ball flight, Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP shaft will surely entice a legion of high-spin golfers.

The new shafts are made for a mid launch and low spin rates, according to Graphite Design’s website, while the Tour AD-DI shafts are made for mid/high to high launch angles and low to low/mid spin rates. Certainly, they are in the same wheelhouse, but for anyone looking to create a slightly more penetrating ball flight with lower launch and lower spin, the new shaft could be their winning ticket.

To accomplish its performance, the AD-TP shafts are made with a faster taper rate from the lower-mid section to the tip of the shaft, and use an all-new graphite material from Toray Industries called T1100G carbon fiber pre-preg. They also use Toray’s Nanoalloy technology in the tip section, which was first introduced in Graphite Design’s Tour AD-DI. As you can see, the Tour AD-TP (top row) compared to the Tour AD-DI (bottom row) will have a firmer mid and butt section, but will also have the familiar stiff tip section.

Personally, I’ve tested just about every new mainstream driver shaft that’s come out in the past three years, and I just haven’t been able to find something that matches my swing like the Tour AD-DI. As a golfer who fights a nasty hook and too much spin, it’s the stiffness and stability of the tip of the shaft that makes me comfortable enough to “go at it.” I’m also a Mets fan, so I like the orange color.

But for whatever reason, my golfing brain finds other shafts to load and unload way differently, either forcing me to flip or block drives, leading to tragic results. So although I often test the latest and greatest golf shafts for you, the GolfWRX readers, I’ve all but given up on other shafts making it into my gamer driver. Yes, other shafts have given me “more optimal” numbers in a Trackman environment, but there’s nothing optimal about feeling like you’re going to duck hook the ball off the planet with OB stakes left.

When Graphite Design announced a new shaft with a similar profile that’s made to create a slightly more penetrating trajectory, however, I’ll admit I was excited to try it. Let’s see how the numbers played out.

The Numbers

I tested my Tour AD-DI gamer shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) against a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, untipped) and a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) in a TaylorMade M1 460 head (10.5 degrees) set to neutral. Yes, I have a bit more swing speed in the tank than displayed below, but it’s also late October and I don’t want to have a blown out back all winter. I conducted my testing at the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland on TrackMan 4 using premium golf balls.

Observations

— Shots with the un-tipped shaft trended to the right. It felt like the face was opening on the downswing and I couldn’t turn my shots over. The data solidifies for me that performance matches my feel, and that I do indeed need a tipped shaft.

— The AD-DI shaft had the highest spin (2953 rpm), highest landing angle, most height (122.1 feet) and launched the highest (13.7 degrees).

— The AD-TP (tipped 1 inch) carried 4.9 yards shorter than the Tour AD-DI, but went 3.7 yards longer in total. This shows how much more penetrating the ball flight with a AD-TP shaft can be.

— Spin rate dropped from 2953 rpm with the Tour AD-DI (tipped 1 inch) to 2460 rpm with the AD-TP (tipped 1 inch).

— With nearly identical clubhead speed, ball speed and smash factors, it’s clear the Tour AD-TP was offering better numbers and tighter dispersion for me.

The Takeaway

The Graphite Design Tour AD-TP shaft is currently selling for $500 at retail. Based on the improvement I saw in my numbers, I would say that the new shaft is worth the value for my swing. The profile and new materials are a match for me in regards to ball flight characteristics and feel. I would describe the feel as “smooth-stiff, with a stable tip.”

Of course, it’s important to undergo a proper fitting, as you saw that the un-tipped version of the Tour AD-GP shaft was giving me fits. But, if you’re like me and struggle with high spin rates and inconsistency, the Tour AD-TP shaft may help you find more accuracy… and a bit more distance, too.

Andrew, the author of this review, comments about hitting duck hooks because that is his miss when he uses a shaft that doesn’t “fit” his swing style. It is the same issue I fight. The fact he has peppered the right side of the grid would be comforting for him. All in all, Andrew fits the new TP shaft pretty well.

Some shafts get progressively weaker to the tip (Rogue, AD-DI), many increase stiffness into the tip (most other GD tour AD models, Kuro Kage) To assume all shafts need to be tipped just seems uninformed. Tipping off stiffness in a shaft like a AD-BB is just going to lower the kick point and give you a softer tip; exact opposite of tipping a AD-DI.

Wow the author tried really hard to say this is better. The chart looks pretty much the same for all three shafts as far as landing zone. Just one leftward (I’m guess more of a hook) shot skewed the oval left. Unless he’s a left hander, none of his shots were hooks, rather either push or slices. Strange for him to say that he’s fighting a hook when he didn’t hit any.

The real difference does seem to be one offering more roll and one more carry due to launch angle changes I’m guessing due to the stiffer mid and butt sections. Worth it? The argument seems a bit thin.

Titleist vokey wedgeworks l grind review – club junkie reviews.

Titleist Vokey wedges might offer golfers the widest range of sole options to suit any swing type, condition, or shot type out there. Countless professionals use Vokey wedges each week and if you look in the bags at local courses you will see a lot of them in play there as well. While sole options are plentiful, Vokey just released another option, the L grind, for their 58 and 60-degree lob wedges. Vokey’s L Grind is a low bounce, 4-degree grind that allows the leading edge to get close to the ground while still offering trailing edge, heel, and toe relief. This sole allows you to get the leading edge of the wedge down on the turf for shots of tight and firm lies. Relief on the wedge is going to allow the player to open the face without that leading edge coming up off the turf so you can hit higher lofted shots easily. This L Grind is only available in Vokey’s Raw finish, so the wedge will rust over time and use.

When you open the box on a Raw Vokey, it is always hard to tell if it is a Tour Chrome as the polish to the raw metal looks that good. Just holding the club in my hand, the L Grind looks a lot like an M Grind with the way they shaped the sole. I won’t lie, I was a bit nervous taking out a wedge with 4 degrees of bounce as I play in Metro Detroit and we rarely find tight and firm lies here. Around our greens is soft and lush with deep rough and bunkers with firmer sand. I tend to get a little steep with my wedges and have always used higher-bounce wedges. This year I was fit into SM10 50.12F, 56.14F, and 60.10S wedges. I thought this L grind was light years from my 60.10S, so I proceeded with caution and took it straight to the course. I had a 58.04L sent to me so I switched up my wedge setup to accommodate that.

Out on the course, I was shocked by the first shot with the 58.04L as it sped through the deep rough, popped the ball in the air, and plopped it into the green. I was short-sided and the ball released past the whole as I expected it to, resting about 8ft away for par. Shots out of the rough, whether partial or closer to full, were easy and drama-free. The L Grind glided through the deeper grass with little extra effort and faster than my S Grind. I rarely got to deep and slid under the ball, but when that did happen the ball came out with some spin and control, holding the green.

Off the fairway is where the L Grind really shined for me as I used it for more shots than I normally would have. I am usually a sand wedge player around the green unless I have to go to the lob for a short sided shot or to carry a bunker. Off the fairway you could just thump the sole of the wedge into the turf and it would quickly slide through, producing a shallower divot than I expected. The divot was honestly not much deeper or bigger than what I see with my 56.14F sand wedge. After the first shot I thought I just hit a good one and I would see additional digging soon, but that wasn’t the case. Partial shots from right off the green to about 40 yards offered great turf interaction. Opening the face was easy and the leading edge staying down gave a poor wedge player confidence to swing a little faster and hit a more solid shot.

Spin, as you would expect from a Vokey wedge, was high and predictable with shots checking up hard upon landing. I really liked playing the ball back in my stance a touch and pressing the wedge forward to hit a low, high spin, shot that checked up hard and then released towards the hole. Out of the trap the L Grind plays well as you can see a good amount of dynamic bounce when you open the face. The float wasn’t as good as my S Grind and if you hit the L Grind fat you could definitely come up short, but the L was very capable out of the firmer traps here.

Overall, the L Grind is a really solid option that is more versatile than its 4-degree bounce description. Players who play in softer conditions or have steeper swings don’t have to shy away from this wedge as I think it plays like a higher bounce sole. I don’t think there is a shot in the book that you can’t hit with this wedge, it is built to do it all.

Matt Fitzpatrick makes switch to Titleist T100 ‘Fitz grind’ irons

After testing Ping’s Blueprint S irons following the 2023 Ryder Cup, however, Fitzpatrick finally made an iron switch in 2024.

Then, at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, Fitzpatrick switched from a Titleist Pro V1x 2019 golf ball into a newer 2021 Pro V1x, and at the U.S. Open last week, Fitzpatrick made a drastic iron change into a set of Titleist T100 irons.

The reason for the major switch-ups?

“To me, I just needed a little bit more flight and a little bit more spin, and the combination of the ball and the irons did that for me,” Fitzpatrick said on Monday of the Travelers Championship.

The Titleist T100 irons have a Tour-inspired, compact head shape at address, but with a cavity-back construction and added Tungsten in the heads for improved forgiveness and launch. Fitzpatrick’s irons are especially unique, though, because they come with a special grind on the leading edge that helps Fitzpatrick achieve the turf interaction, spin and height that he wants.

Patrick Cantlay has a similar leading edge grind on his Titleist AP2 718 irons, but Fitzpatrick assured GolfWRX.com on Tuesday that his is different. He dubbed it, the “Fitz grind.”

2024 Tour de France Stage 7 results, standings: Remco Evenepoel wins time trial

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel proved why he is the reigning World Time Trial Champion as he edged general classification leader Tadej Pogačar to win the Stage 7 individual time trial and cut into Pogačar’s lead. 

Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) completed Friday’s 15.7-mile route from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin 12 seconds faster than yellow jersey wearer Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), narrowing Pogačar’s overall lead to 33 seconds. Evenepoel leads the contest for the white jersey, awarded to the best young rider under 26, and sits in second place in the general classification standings.

Stage 7 was the first of the 2024 Tour de France's two individual time trial stages. The next time trial will be the last stage of the race, which means the leader could be determined in the final leg.

This victory marked Evenepoel’s first career Tour de France stage win. 

“We wanted a stage win, and that is done. It's a perfect day for me and my team. Mission accomplished,” Evenepoel said . 

Although Pogačar saw his lead shrink, he said he still considered Friday’s outing a win. 

“To lose against Remco, World Champion, the best time trialist right now, it’s still a pretty good feeling,” Pogačar said . 

Nevertheless, the heavy favorite acknowledged that the battle for the top spot is intensifying, adding that he needs to “keep an eye on” Evenepoel, as well as Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) as the race progresses. Roglic and Vingegaard finished in third and fourth place, 34 and 37 seconds behind Evenepoel, respectively. 

“Right now it’s really close and for me, it’s better to be in the lead than be chasing,” Pogačar said.

As for his own prospects, Evenepoel remains cautiously optimistic.

“I believe Tadej is going to be unreachable,” Evenepoel said. “But this is cycling, you never know what can happen. I think the further into the race we go, the better I will feel, so I’ll focus more on the podium because I feel I have the legs for it.”

American rider Matteo Jorgenson (UCI WorldTeam Visma-Lease a Bike) also recorded a seventh-place finish, enough to move him into ninth place overall in the general classification standings.

Tour de France: Remco Evenepoel powers to stage 7 time trial victory as Pogačar holds onto yellow

Tadej Pogačar second and concedes only 12 seconds to Belgian after race against the clock to Gevrey-Chambertin

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) announced himself fully at the Tour de France as he seared to a maiden stage win on debut at cycling’s biggest race in the stage 7 time trial, outpowering race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) despite thinking he had suffered a late puncture.

The Belgian ‘aero bullet’ attacked every inch of the 25.3km route from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin as the Tour headed through the stunning Burgundy vineyards, beating Pogačar in second by only 12 seconds.

Evenepoel led by 10 seconds from Pogačar and 23 from Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) at the top of the only hill roughly halfway through the course, extending his lead on the winners of the past four Tour on descent and flat run-in by two seconds and 14 seconds respectively.

While he wasn’t in his ITT World Champion’s jersey as the leader of the young rider’s classification, the rainbow accents were all over his kit and bike as he ripped through the course, proving he is every bit the best time trialist in the world.

Primož Roglič took a solid third, 34 seconds down on the Belgian as the GC battle reignited towards the end of the first week, with the overall contenders beating the time trial specialists on the incredibly quick course. Vingegaard dropped to fourth on the stage once he crossed the line after being ahead of former teammate Roglič for much of his effort.

There was no change to position in the top three overall between Pogačar, Evenepoel and Vingegaard, but the Belgian got closer to the lead and the Dane further from yellow. Roglič Also moved up to fourth thanks to his efforts.

“Crazy. I was on a good day but the climb was actually pretty tough because of course I wanted to start fast and I had to keep something for the climb which wasn’t easy. Then the descent, when you’re on the limit was pretty technical and fast. But I enjoyed every metre of this TT and coming out with the win is simply amazing. Super happy,” said Evenepoel, before explaining why he thought he had punctured in the final few kilometres.

“I was pretty sure I had a puncture actually. I was a bit scared but after a few hundred metres further in the TT I knew nothing was wrong. Then I had to keep going. 

"In the end, I just had to take risks because I knew Tadej was pretty close to me. Like I said yesterday, Tadej can also do really good TTs, especially in Grand Tours, so it was a close one but I just wanted to win today and that’s accomplished so very proud.”

Evenepoel moved closer to Pogačr on GC and now sits just 33 seconds away from the two-time winner going into stage 8. But he stayed with what he said before the Tour, conceding that the Slovenian may be “unreachable”.

“We weren't really thinking about the time gaps in the GC. We just want to take a stage win that is done. So perfect day for me and my team, took some time on the others so mission accomplished and now we have to focus on tomorrow and on Sunday, of course,” he said.

How it unfolded

Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) got proceedings underway on stage 7 as the current Lanterne Rouge, last place overall in the Tour, rolling off the ramp in Nuits-Saint-Georges just after 13:00 local time in the Côte-d'Or department, well into Burgundy wine country.

With many of the first few riders being sprinters, stage 7 didn’t get a proper benchmark until Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-EasyPost) got started with intent. He railed his TT bike through the opening technical corners and was immediately well up at the first time check in Messanges.

He knocked Luke Durbridge (Jayco AlUla) off the hotseat soon after the Australian had claimed ownership of it with a solid effort, with Bissegger setting a time of 30:06 as the first to average over 50 kph average speed.

It looked like a time that might stand until the other TT specialists got going over an hour later, but behind there was a Frenchman flying up the road on a rare rim brake setup no less, Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels).

The stage 2 winner had bested Bissegger’s time at the second time check atop the climb to Curley and held his lead all the way to the line, setting a new best time of 29:44 at the line in Gevrey-Chambertin despite losing time to the Swiss rider in the final 5.4km.

But Vauquelin could not sit comfortably as he got into the hotseat, with specialists Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny), Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) all getting underway in a 27-minute block after him.

Campenaerts was the first to arrive at the finish, and the drama came immediately, with the former hour record holder narrowly beating the Frenchman’s benchmark by a whisker, only managing a gap of less than a second to take the lead.

Küng then should have gone even faster but crossed the line with a time eight seconds slower than the Belgian after a dropped chain forced him to restring his chain while on the bike. This lost him around 30 seconds after going through the Messanges time check with a 12-second lead on everyone and ended another Tour time trial with disappointment for Küng.

Van Aert didn’t threaten his compatriot’s lead when he crossed the line 59 seconds down, with him showing more good signs of recovery from his crash in March while still not being back to his best.

The next wave of challengers saw French national champion in the discipline Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) unable to upset the time of Campenaerts. By contrast, Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) was lighting up the road behind him and went quickest at the second time check by 2 seconds from Vauquelin.

However, when the terrain stopped going uphill and Healy got onto the downhill and flat run for the line, he lost time quickly to the bigger riders and finished seven seconds down.

With the final 25 riders getting underway, those vying for the GC got their efforts going and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease) was the first to impress, setting the third best time at the first time check.

Roglič, Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Pogačar all got going at two-minute intervals and it was an aggressive start for all four, all going into the green compared to Campenaerts’ benchmark time.

The best time at the first time check was taken by Roglič, only for his former teammate Vingegaard to overtake him by nine seconds when he passed the point. But Evenepoel began a supersonic pace and bettered even the Dane’s time by another 11 seconds, with Pogačar looking equally as impressive only three seconds off the world champ.

Roglič had lost more time at the top of the hill in Curley, now 15 seconds back on Vingegaard. As was the way at T1, Evenepoel then came over the timing point an incredible 23 seconds faster than the defending Tour de France champion, with Pogačar only 10 seconds back on the leader.

Once the finish came, Campenaerts was unseated by Roglič for the lead, with what was a strong time of 29:26. Vingegaard came through a few minutes later but he hadn’t been able to hold onto his lead on the Slovenian, with a time three seconds slower.

Evenepoel thought he had been the victim of the most untimely late puncture as he jumped his bike on the road searching for an issue. But thankfully, it was just something he heard on the road and he was able to continue on and take his first Tour victory.

Pogačar looked as though he was closing as he reduced the gap from intermediate time check two by four seconds when he reached the third time check in Morey-Saint-Denis. However, he simply couldn’t match the power of the World Champion and came across the line in a brilliant, but not good enough for the win, time of 29:04.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, France (AP) — Race-against-the-clock specialist Remco Evenepoel displayed impressive power and precision in winning the Tour de France’s first time trial on Friday.

In his slipstream was every other contender for the yellow jersey, including holder Tadej Pogacar.

Despite a small problem with his bike close to the finish that cost him a few seconds, the Tour debutant mastered the 25-kilometer (16-mile) stage in the Burgundy Grand Crus wine country to dominate his first win at cycling’s biggest race.

Evenepoel clocked 28 minutes, 52 seconds to beat Pogacar by 12 seconds. Primoz Roglic was third, 34 seconds behind. Evenepoel has now won stages at all three Grands Tours — the Giro d’Italia, Tour and Vuelta.

Evenepoel, who was first at all intermediate check points, stayed in second place in the general classification, 33 seconds behind Pogacar. Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard was third overall, 1:15 behind.

Pogacar added 25 seconds on Vingegaard, taking his revenge from last year’s time trial in Combloux where the Slovenian was at the receiving end of a sobering beating by the Dane. Vingegaard, however, did not lose too much time and the gap between them was not that big with more than two weeks of hard racing remaining.

“I gained time on Primoz and on Jonas and the other guys, I can be really happy,” Pogacar said. “I need to keep an eye on Remco now, he is a bit closer. They can show good legs in the next mountain stages. Still a long way to go.”

Pogacar collected his 26th yellow jersey. One more and he’ll join Vingegaard in 15th spot on the all-time ranking for the most days at the top of the general classification.

There was a big question mark over Vingegaard’s form before the start following the crash that wreaked havoc with his season. Vingegaard was hospitalized for nearly two weeks in Spain in April following a high-speed crash in the Tour of the Basque Country. He sustained a broken collarbone and ribs and a collapsed lung.

Evenepoel has been regarded as a cycling prodigy for years. A versatile rider, he has won the 2022 Vuelta and classics after recovering from a horrific crash during a race in Italy in 2020.

He won the world time trial last year and the road race in 2022. He needed surgery this season after breaking a collarbone and shoulder blade in a crash at the Tour of Basque Country. The two-time world champion will lead Belgium’s men’s team in road cycling at the Paris Olympics .

“As for the rest of the Tour de France, I believe Tadej is going to be unreachable,” Evenepoel said. “But this is cycling, you never know what can happen. The further into the race we go, the better I will feel, so I’ll focus more on the podium because I feel I have the legs for it.”

The stage took riders on forest roads and through vineyards on a mostly flat terrain. The short climb of the Côte de Curtil-Vergy after 12 kilometers added a dose of pain on the way to the finish in Gevrey-Chambertin.

Tucked in a perfect aerodynamic position, Evenepoel went all out in the descent, reaching an impressive speed of 87.3 kph (54 mph), according to the NTT Data trackers.

“The climb was pretty tough, because I wanted to start fast but I wanted to keep something,” Evenepoel said. “The descent was technical and fast, you have to do it well. I enjoyed every meter of this TT.”

He slowed with about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) left, thinking he had a puncture, but quickly realized everything was fine and rekindled his effort.

“Maybe somebody from the public dropped a glass or hit a fence, it made the same sound as a puncture,” he added. “I was a bit scared, but after few meters I knew nothing was wrong. I kept pushing even with the scare, fearing that maybe it was a slow puncture.”

There will be a second time trial on the final day of the race on July 21, a 34-kilometer (21-mile) trek between Monaco and Nice.

Saturday’s Stage 8 will take the peloton on a hilly ride to Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, the home and final resting place of former French President Charles de Gaulle.

The Graphite Design Tour AD HD shaft has a smooth feel with a pleasant kick in the mid/tip.  Boring flight with mid launch.

Introduction

As the husband of a school psychologist, the name “Tour AD HD” gives me a laugh every time that I see it.  But in the case of the latest from Graphite Design, the HD stands for Hyper Drive.  With sci-fi images of light speed drives dancing through my head, I took this new offering to the range to see what it could do.

When I first got the info on the Tour AD HD, I thought, “We’re going to have a problem.”  I am a proud Duke grad, and I do not do light blue.  Thankfully, despite what it looks like in the photos, the Tour AD HD is not powder puff blue, it’s a few shades darker with a pronounced sparkle to it .

The graphics on the Tour AD HD are classic Graphite Design.  There’s modest branding near the grip with wraparound rings of black and blue.  There’s a small “Accuracy and Distance” logo at the tip, but otherwise the shaft is totally distraction-free near the ball.

Graphite Design has been a trend setter in sharing exactly how each of their shafts bends.  They break each model down into “Butt,” “Mid,” and “Tip” and give it a rating from Very Stiff to Soft.  In the past, my sense of each shaft has aligned with this chart, but the Tour AD HD has proven to be a small exception.

Per Graphite Design, the Tour AD HD is, from butt to tip, Firm, Firm, Firm+ (Firm is in the middle of the Graphite Design spectrum).   This indicates that the shaft is stiffest in the tip section.  While I would agree that the shaft has a medium-stiffness overall, I sensed the most kick in the mid/tip .  This is a good example of how feel is subjective and that players will feel differently about a shaft based on their swing.

Performance

Graphite Design bills the Tour AD HD as being “Mid Launch, Mid/Low Spin” which matches the results I saw on both the launch monitor and on the course.  The ball came off the face in my normal window with an extremely strong flight .  Given the kick that I felt, I was expecting slightly higher spin, but every drive bored through the wind unaffected.

Something I enjoyed about hitting the Tour AD HD was the way it responded to more aggressive swings.  When I made an easy swing, the shaft gave a light kick and sent the ball straight down the middle.  If I gave 110%, the shaft kicked harder and produced a tight draw .  I never felt like I was overpowering the shaft, rather I had the ability to hit two different shots just by changing my effort.

One of the big advancements in premium shafts over the last few years is the way softer profiles can handle mishits.  Thanks to advanced materials like Graphite Design’s TORAYCA carbon fiber, shafts can have a smooth feel and also keep poor strikes on line.  I was very impressed by how the Tour AD HD produced respectable results from poor swings .  It took a truly awful effort to produce big slices or hooks.

The Graphite Design Tour AD HD is available in weights ranging from 40 to 80 grams .  At 40 grams, R2, R1, and Stiff are the available flexes.  Everything from R2 to X is offered at 50 grams.  In the 60 gram range, Graphite Design offers the Stiff/Regular, Stiff, X, and Tour X.  The 70 gram family has S, X, and TX.  Finally, the heaviest versions, 80 grams, are available in only stiff and X.

Every year, Graphite Design finds a way to add a new, interesting profile to one of the largest, most complete shaft families in golf.  The Tour AD HD blends a smooth feel with low spin and impressive stability in a way that will win over plenty of players.

I play a mid 70 gram x stiff shaft, which works well enough but might be a tad heavy as I haven’t been to the gym since the Corona regulations made it unenjoyable. How would you compare a 60 gram tx to a mid 70 gram x stiff. I’m just looking for a generalized opinion. I’m not going to go pay 100 bucks to get fit again when that’s probably what I would spend on a shaft on ebay. Current shaft is atmos 7x tour spec, looking for something similar in specs to Tiger’s 60tx. Thanks

As a veteran commenter, I think you know what I’m going to say here. It depends on the individual. It should reduce fatigue across the board, but whether that leads to more draw, more fade, or more speed just depends on the player.

Great review Matt, thanks for the insight! Question for you – my typical launch stats mirror those in the above launch monitor data (rarely above 105 swing speed), with exception that my steep swing produces heinous spins that you’d want in a 6I, resulting in my total distance getting killed. I’m in the 50+ club, with shoulder issues, so focus is on playing for many years to come and trading more flexibility for strength. Working with my pro on the swing to change attack angle in my swing, but would like to invest in a GD Tour shaft – how might the AD-HD-6 stack up to either the AD-IZ-6 or AD-VR-6 if I’m trying to improve my launch angle while trying to keep spins rates down? thanks

Unfortunately there’s no way for me to give you a reliable answer to that without having you try them. I could tell you which has the stiffest tip, which in theory would knock spin off, but that shaft might not work for you at all.

My advice would be to get into a place where you’re happy with your swing, then get a fitting where you try everything. Graphite Design is great, but there’s no reason to limit your choices.

Matt, did you have any issues with swing weight with your Ping head or did you like the balance point ?

I’m curious why you swing speed fluctuates so much with certain shafts? I noticed the Tensei 1K White, Diamana TB, etc. your swing speed is up to 109 MPH, but many others you’re at 105 MPH. Are you switching between 6X and 7X shafts for different shaft testing?

Did you look at the dates on the reviews? Plugged In Golf is closing in on eight years of reviews. Over that time, my speed has been up and down due to injuries, training cycles, seasonality, and, in small part, the equipment being tested.

What GD AD shaft would be close to the YS6+ stiff shaft (med, med, med/soft profile). Was looking at AD DI (but tip is stiff) or AD HD (similar but overall a bit firmer). Any ideas? thanks

I had a chance to take about 50 swings with the AD HD tonight in an Epic Max LS 9 degree head, and really loved it. Really smooth, nice kick, stable, and the launch was consistently right around what I’m looking for. I would say I felt the kick more in the mid, not the tip, but Matt, as you point out, different swings mean we experience shafts’ characteristics differently, and it was smooth overall. It might have just been a good night, but I felt like I could really go after it with the HD and my swing speed was up about 3 mph from my normal 101-102ish. I’m planning to do a driver and fairway wood fitting this winter, but I expect the AD HD to be in the mix for my driver (and the Diamana BF or TB to be a top contender for my fairway wood).

My best advice is to get fit. I don’t know anything about your swing, your game, or why you’re looking for an alternative to the AD HD, so I can’t make an educated suggestion.

The PWR UP tour lands in London for a second show this weekend

AC/DC aren’t just hard rock legends with well over a dozen studio albums to their name: they’ve also got a rep for being one of the best live bands on the planet. Since they were founded just over 50 years ago, AC/DC have played thousands of shows – and now they’re back in London for two more huge gigs. 

The Aussie rockers are currently in the midst of their PWR UP tour, which went up for sale back in February and began in May. They’re touring major European cities like Amsterdam , Munich , Vienna , Paris and Dublin , and their London shows at Wembley this week are their only ones confirmed for the UK this year.

Wembley only allows each gig-goer to bring one bag smaller than A4 size.

What’s the weather looking like?  

The weather isn’t looking fantastic, but it isn’t looking godawful either. 

On July 7, it’ll also be mostly cloudy and there’s a higher chance of rain (40 percent) at about 7pm, though that drops to 10 percent later in the evening. The temperature will be between 18C and 19C.

What are the reviews saying?

So far the PWR UP tour appears to be a smash hit. The Guardian  gave the show four stars, calling it ‘a poignant lesson on the power of rock’n’roll’. The Independent’s  review wasn’t as glowing, but the band still received a respectable three stars. The Indie cited some sound issues, but hopefully these will be cleared up before Sunday’s gig.

England to tour Pakistan in October - dates and venues set for three-Test series in October

The schedule for England's three-Test tour of Pakistan has been set; series begins in Multan from October 7-11 for the first Test, before moving to Karachi for the second from October 15-19 and the third will be in Rawalpindi from October 24-28

Full highlights from the fourth day of the third Test in Karachi as England clinch an historic 3-0 series sweep in Pakistan.

The dates and venues have been set for England’s tour of Pakistan later this year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board have announced the full match schedule for the men's Test series against England in October.

The three-Test tour begins in Multan for the first Test that will take place from October 7-11.

It will then move on to Karachi for the second from October 15-19.

The series forms part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 and will be the second time the England men's team have played a Test series in Pakistan in the last two years, with England having won the last series 3-0 in December 2022.

"We're really excited to be returning to Pakistan for this three-match men's Test tour in October," said ECB Chief Executive Officer Richard Gould.

Target’s trying to hold its own against the Prime Day boom with Circle Week, a week of promotions available to all members of its free loyalty program. From July 7-13, Target will be offering tons of deals on toys, apparel, home goods, and more. Walmart is also running a July savings event called Walmart Deals from July 8-11. Other companies like Doordash and Best Buy are running summer deals as well. So if you sell on any of those sites, it may be time to scale up ad spend. Apple expanded their 30% fee on Meta ads globally

They’ve been charging this fee to US advertisers since February, and now they're going global with it. As of July 1st, any Facebook or Instagram ad purchase made through an iOS app anywhere in the world will see a 30% service fee. It can be avoided by doing all your ad buying on a web browser, which I assume is how most of us work anyways. But the workflow to boost a post right on your iPhone is pretty seamless, so don’t let that get you. Meta proactively updated its web platforms to offer the same boosting functionality as its mobile apps. This fee is kinda rude of Apple, IMO, and even the government is mad about it. US and EU officials say that the fee is ‘anti-competitive’ and gives Apple an unfair advantage. And they’re right! Now for some Google news…

Google Search Console reports are delayed over 53 hours

It’s pretty common for these reports to be delayed, but since a lot of people are doing end-of-month reporting right now, I wanted to call it out. ‘Grim outlook’ predicted for Google’s Privacy Sandbox

IAB Tech Lab’s Privacy Sandbox Task Force was assembled to study the implementation of Google’s new data privacy solution. In their final report, they noted that the “Privacy Sandbox will restrict the digital media industry's ability to deliver relevant, effective advertising, placing smaller media companies and brands at significant risk. The lack of functionality will throttle their ability to compete, ultimately impacting the industry’s growth.” Oof.

They ran a test with Criteo and concluded that if third-party cookies were deprecated today, Criteo would expect publisher revenue to decrease by an average of 60%. Yikes! Unfortunate news, but considering the regulatory challenges Google is facing, I’m not sure how this can be avoided. They keep pushing back cookie deprecation, but it has to happen eventually… right? All us advertisers can do is take advantage of our first party data and prepare our tracking set up for the impending third-party cookie deprecation. Now for some SEO tips…
