2-Day Mussoorie Trip: Detailed Itinerary

Mussoorie would always be close to my heart as it was my first solo trip . Mussoorie is a popular hill station, located in Uttarakhand and draws millions of tourists all year round, so much so that most of the popular attractions have been commercialized.

I made the conscious effort to skip the popular tourist attractions and explore the less touristy ones.

If you are planning to go to Mussoorie for a weekend gateway, here is my 2-day Mussoorie itinerary to help you.

Train: I had booked the night train (Nanda Devi Express) from New Delhi to Dehradun and Dehradun-New Delhi Shatabdi for the return journey.

Stay at Mussoorie Gateway: 2-star hotel close to Mall road, which I booked through MakeMyTrip for Rs 900 a night. A comfy bed and a clean bathroom are the 2 things that I generally look for while booking the hotel, and Mussoorie Gateway had both these things. Additionally, they had the complimentary shuttle service to Mall road which saved me lots of time. I was lucky to find a decent hotel close to the prime location for a very affordable price. I know how expensive the hotel can be in touristy places, as I had experienced in Nainital where hotel cost was close to 50% of my total trip cost.

Day – 1

Reached Dehradun early in the morning; took bus to Mussoorie for a Picture Palace end of Mall road which was just over an hour journey.

From Picture Palace end, it is a 3 km hike to Lal Tibba. I must have stopped dozen of times in adulation of mountain beauty. Had breakfast at “ Lal Tibba Binoculars and Café ” which gave me complimentary access to the binocular placed at the roof. From the roof, one can see stunning views of mountain peaks.

Soham Heritage Centre

Walked back from the cafe and headed towards Soham Heritage Centre . Took me around 45 minutes to reach there. It is a private museum having a collection of paintings, sculptures and other art forms depicting the Himalayan culture. It has a wonderful art collection and is a must-visit place in Mussoorie.

Company Garden

Company Garden is a municipal garden with a lake, an artificial waterfall , and small amusement rides. It can be given a miss when in Mussoorie. Man-made things were nowhere near to the astonishing natural beauty of Mussoorie.

Stroll along the Mall Road

I took a walk along the Mall Road in the evening and tasted the roadside food. I found a small but nice aquarium ( Jawahar Aquarium) on the mall road and spent some time with the fishes.

Happy Valley

After checking out from the Hotel, I started walking towards Shedup Choepelling Temple (Buddhist Monastery) at Happy Valley . The whole atmosphere of Happy Valley was very peaceful with very few people seen along the way which is in complete contrast to life in Delhi.

Spent a few minutes inside the monastery and then clicked photographs of breath-taking views outside the monastery.

Afterwards , I went to Dalai Hill which was hardly 15 minutes hike from there. Dalai Hill has a golden coloured Buddha statue surrounded with colourful prayers flag. Those prayer flags along with amazing mountain views were a treat to my eyes.

Went back to Mall road to have lunch. Took a bus from Library Bus stand to Dehradun to catch my train back to Delhi.

musssoorie is always the no 1 destination for me, not because it is a hill station, because of you can enjoy all the weather without any road blockage etc spacially the gun hills and camels back pack.

Although founded less than 200 years ago, its strategic location played a huge role in establishing its importance. It is a pit stop for Hindu pilgrims on the sacred “Chota Char Dham Yatra” to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath; as well as adventure enthusiasts who are gearing up to scale the higher mountains beyond. The mighty rivers Yamuna and Ganga also flow past the two sides of Mussoorie for nearly 19 kilometers.

Mussoorie’s pleasant weather, fresh and life-giving breezes, scented mists and gorgeous panoramic views act as a magnet for tourists weary of the heat and dust of the Indian plains. A surprising number of foreign tourists also flock to Mussoorie every year, especially during Christmas, when the town is at the apex of its natural beauty. The pristine, snow blanketed town to match the majestic Himalayan peaks, and this vista against a bright blue sky is one that will stay with you forever. How you can plan this stunning and charmingly beautiful hill station is what I will be discussing in this article.

Where is Mussoorie Located?

Mussoorie is located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand , in the Garhwal Himalayas. It lies 300 kilometers to the north of the national capital New Delhi and is accessible by road, rail and air. The nearest railheads are at Dehradun and also at Haridwar, from where you reach it via Rishikesh and then Dehradun. It is located at a height of more than 6500 feet with its highest point at “Lal TIbba” at 7500 feet. It is flanked by the Himalayas towards the north and northeast, and Shiwalik ranges to the south. You can also behold panoramic views of the entire Doon Valley from up here, and a magical sight it is!

Is Mussoorie safe to travel?

Is it safe to travel to Mussoorie? Well, a one-line answer to this question would be that yes it. But there are of course several terms and conditions applied when we talk a topic like safety. Mussoorie is a hill station with steep climbs and a winding road that gets narrow at a lot of places. So you must have a decent enough driving experience and should know how to handle a vehicle in a hilly region. This place receives a lot of snow during winter and then it rains cats and dogs here in Monsoon.

The crime rate in the area, however, is almost next to none. So as long as you check the weather forecast before leaving, drive safely and sensibly, do not get into any unnecessary arguments then yes, Mussoorie is a very safe place to visit. However, visitors are advised to stay cautious during monsoon season. The only thing visitors have to consider is to stay indoors as it may rain continuously during the rainy season.

The standard rules of safety like being alert with strangers and not to hang out in strange places will apply to everyone. If you are traveling alone then it is advisable to stay in a hotel in Mussoorie itself and not in a remote area.

Where to stay in Mussoorie

Mussoorie being a much in demand tourist hotspot, you will find hotels of all sizes, amenities and price ranges in this town. Again, it is wiser to pre-book accommodations to get a good deal. Here’s a tip – the state tourism body Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam operates a chain of hotels throughout the region. They are located at prime spots, sometimes a stone’s throw away from the best attractions. They are also clean and spacious with courteous and helpful staff.

How to reach Mussorie

Due to its location in Himalayas, reaching Mussoorie is only possible by road but it is fairly easy. Mussoorie is a major tourist spot and hence a very well connected town. You can either bring your own vehicle and drive all the way to Mussoorie or you can get public transport.

How to reach Mussoorie by Road

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, then below is the route that you can take to reach Mussoorie. For the sake of explaining the route, I will assume Delhi as your starting point.

Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut – Khatauli – Muzaffarnagar – Dehradun – Mussoorie

Depending on the road you took, this entire journey will be between 280 to 320 kilometers. From Muzaffarnagar, you can either head to Dehradun via Saharanpur or via Haridwar. It doesn’t matter which road you take though, because the difference in kilometers and travel time won’t be much. At an average, it will take you about 9 to 10 hours from Delhi to get to Mussoorie once you take in the road conditions, hilly area, and traffic into consideration. The road till Dehradun is pretty much a straight one and then climbs up in a steep manner to Mussoorie for the last 50 odd kilometers.

How to reach Mussoorie by Bus

There are regular buses to Mussoorie from almost every major town nearby. You can find luxury buses operated by private companies or state run services. If you were coming from Delhi, then you just reach to ISBT and board any of the buses operated by DTC, UP Transport or Uttarakhand Roadways . If you could not find a direct Bus for Mussoorie then look one for Dehradun. From Dehradun then, you can look for any local transport to complete the last stretch of your journey. The total fare of the Bus would be around Rs. 500 to Rs. 800 depending on the type of Bus.

How to reach Mussoorie by Train

Nearest railway station to Mussoorie would be the Dehradun Railway Station, located 36 kilometers away. It has trains connecting to New Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu and Kolkata, among others. In particular, the Delhi-Dehradun Shatabdi Express is a 5.5-hour journey one way.

How to reach Mussoorie by Flight

Jolly Grant would be the nearest airport to Mussoorie. It is located 60 kilometers away in Dehradun, which has direct flights to Mumbai and New Delhi. From Dehradun, you can hire state transport buses or private taxis to reach Mussoorie.

How to reach Mussoorie from Dehradun

Once you have reached Dehradun by either train or flight, you can reach Mussoorie by either public transport or a taxi. There are regular buses leaving for Mussoorie from Dehradun train station. Please make sure that you are boarding the right bus though because buses would go to the opposite ends of the Mussoorie Mall, Library and Picture Palace. The last bus leaves at around 8 PM and is usually very crowded. The bus would take about an hour and a half to drop you to Mussoorie and would charge about Rs. 50 per person.

If you wanted to travel by Taxi then you could get those too from either the train station or the airport. From the Dehradun railway station, a taxi would charge around Rs 1000 for Mussoorie and about the same amount of money from the Airport as well.

A third option could be Shared taxis which will cost you Rs. 300 per person for a drop to Mussoorie from Dehradun.

For return journey, you can take a bus from many bus stands in Mussoorie (Library, Masonic Lodge, Tehri and Landour) to Dehradun. From there, the road network is well connected to Delhi, Haridwar, Chamba, Shimla, Chandigarh and Saharanpur

How to reach Mussoorie by Taxi

If you wanted, you could also rent a private taxi for your trip to Mussoorie. Different taxi operators and tour companies offer prices depending on the package you chose, the duration of the trip and the type of taxi you booked. But on an average basis, for a drop to Mussoorie, a private taxi will cost you about Rs. 4000 to Rs. 5000 from Delhi or any other city at equal distance. This taxi will only drop you to Mussoorie though and there won’t be any sightseeing involved. From Rishikesh or Haridwar, a taxi would cost about Rs. 2000 and from Dehradun, you would pay around Rs. 1000.

How to reach Mussoorie in Winter

All of the above modes of transport that I explained above will remain applicable in winter season as well; except for rare occasions when heavy snowfall may block the roads temporarily. Even if that happens, authorities usually clear the road and restore connectivity just as soon as they are able to.

Local Transport in Mussorie

Private taxis – These typically charge Rs. 1000 per person for the Dehradun – Mussoorie journey. A share taxi would reduce the cost to Rs. 300 per person.

Self-driving – Drive into Mussoorie on NH58 till Roorkee and then on NH72-A after till Dehradun. Then, drive on New Mussoorie Road.

Cycle rickshaw – Some flat stretches in Mussoorie offer cycle rickshaws. However, avoid these if possible. They are time-consuming and impossible to navigate through thick crowds. Also, certain areas of Mussoorie such as the Mall Road are closed entirely to vehicles. This town is best explored on foot. It is also pretty costly.

Private car – For a full day of sightseeing, it is wise to book a private car. The cost will be approximately Rs. 1800. At the day end, they will drop you where you wish

Best time to Visit

Weather of mussorie.

Mussoorie retains a cool and pleasant climate throughout the year with misty mornings and evenings, bright sun and a clear sky. It snows here heavily during the months of January and February. Snow starts to melt in March and April to June is pleasant weather with clear sunny skies. During monsoon, the sky is cloudy and it may rain for days on end; sometimes enough to even cause landslides and block roads. Monsoon is gone by September but leaves plenty of greenery behind. Autumn arrives in October and brings Orange-ish looks in the valleys all around. By October end, winter starts to settle in again and the following months of November and December will again see temperature dropping close to 0 Degrees Celsius. It starts to snow again in Mussoorie towards the end of December.

Here is the month wise average temperature break up. Please note though that this is just an average and during winters, it may fall several degrees below 0 during nights.

When is the best time to visit Mussoorie will entirely depend on your reason to visit; and will definitely be different for everyone. If we talk in terms of the weather:

Summer (March through June) – The peak tourist season, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies. Perfect for sightseeing and adventure sports.
Monsoon (July through mid-September) – The off-season, and prone to landslides. If you like solitude, this is the time to visit. Also brilliant for a romantic getaway. Be aware that most activities, scenic spots and adventure sports will be closed during this time.
Winters (October through February) – Fresh snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Incredible time for honeymooners. Great for winter sports.

When to go to Mussorie?

So if you wanted to see snow and possibly even catch a live snowfall, then the months of January and February will be the best. But if you are someone who is not too fond of cold weather than definitely avoid traveling at this time. The months of April to March are generally considered to be the best time to go because the weather in these months in Mussoorie is the best. It, however, does get crowded at this time because a lot of families plan their Mussoorie trip at this time only. So if you are not too fond of crowded places and like offbeat destinations more, then definitely avoid traveling in these months.

July and August is the time for Monsoon and it is generally advised to avoid traveling in the hills at this time. But if you are ready to take the risk then you will be rewarded with vistas that will sweep you off your feet. November and December is a bad time to visit because the scenery at this time will be dull and dry. The weather will be extremely cold and there won’t even be any snow around.

So to break it down,

Travel possibilities during different seasons

During peak tourist seasons, all forms of transport will be highly expensive. To get to Mussoorie you must plan at least 2-3 months in advance and pre-book travel tickets. Otherwise, not only will you find prices sky-high, you may not be able to book a ticket at all. During monsoon, prices drop, but traveling through the mountain roads is tricky as landslides are frequent and devastating.

Family Trip to Mussoorie

Mussoorie is a child-friendly place and there are plenty of attractions to keep the young ones occupied and happy. However, since they will be unfamiliar with the terrain, it is important to keep an eye on them at all times, especially in the wilderness areas like waterfalls, viewpoints and picnic spots.

What to Pack

Clothes to pack for mussoorie trip.

Carry warm clothes no matter what time of year you are traveling. Also, dress in layers so that you can put on or take off a layer when the temperature changes suddenly. In winter especially, thermal wear and heavy jackets are a must. Carry extra pairs of clean socks at all times. All mountain areas can experience sudden or continuous downpours at all times of the year, so carry an umbrella, poncho or windcheater. Mussoorie is best explored on foot, so sturdy, all terrain, all weather shoes are a basic requirement. Remember, respect the sentiments of the local tribal people and do not wear clothes which are revealing, especially when visiting a holy place such as a Monastery.

Petrol Pumps & Mechanics in Mussoorie

There are several petrol pumps and mechanics all over in Mussoorie. You will not have problem finding one either.

Mobile network, Data connectivity

All major mobile networks in India offer connectivity within and near Mussoorie. However, the farther you venture into remote areas, the lesser the chances of mobile connectivity, except BSNL network. Always carry a dumbphone with a BSNL SIM that you can use in case of emergencies. Dumbphone charge lasts for weeks and they are hardy in chilly weather. Any smartphone you carry should be kept close to the skin. Extreme cold can cause a smartphone battery to zonk out.

Electricity and other facilities

Mussoorie does not experience frequent power cuts. However, you should carry a high power torch and extra batteries if you plan on traveling to remote areas. All hotels and guest houses here have electricity and other facilities that you will need as a tourist.

Mussoorie Road Condition

Condition of the road to, in and around Mussoorie is a mix of good and average. There are really no bad sections of road that can become a problem. Coming from Delhi, the entire road is mostly smooth except for a few bad patches around Haridwar and Rishikesh; or near Chhutmalpur if you were coming from Saharanpur side.

Best Vehicle for Mussoorie Trip

There is really no best vehicle for visiting Mussoorie. I have seen locals here drive around in a Maruti 800 or Alto. The only thing needed is that your vehicle is in good condition and well serviced. With that being said, the roads within Mussoorie are very steep and narrow at a few places with sharp turns. When I say steep, I mean the kind where a Royal Enfield climbed up in 1st gear with a single rider and I wasn’t sure if it was going to make it. If you are bringing your car here, it would be best to not drive it inside the town unless you are really good at the wheel and know how to maneuver a vehicle at such climbs.

People and culture

Mussoorie is an eclectic mix of various ethnic Kumaoni and Garhwali tribes (they lived here since time immemorial), Gurkhas, Nepalis, Tibetans, and migrants from the Indian plains who settled here decades ago. Although the town was established by a European country, it has a quintessential Indianness – of colorful, bustling and a perfect example of unity in diversity. Mussoorie celebrates tribal folk festivals, Tibetan holy days, Christmas, and of course the Hindu religious festivals with equal elan and enthusiasm.

What to Eat in Mussoorie

Garhwal cuisine has a rustic character, being simple, homely, nutritious and inexpensive. Much of the food is grown and consumed locally. In fact, if you ask for local dishes, it is likely that the rice, wheat, vegetables or fruits are freshly harvested from some local garden. The organic produce tastes more flavorful than anything you would find in a city grocery. Food imports are mostly made to satisfy tourist tastes.

Local dishes emphasize pulses and wheat. For special occasions, meat dishes are served, which are delicately spiced and cooked, in stark contrast to other north Indian meat-based dishes. Meals are cooked with 4-5 ingredients and the combinations allow flavors to emerge perfectly.

Foods to try in Mussoorie

Here are some typical dishes you will find here:

Parathas – Slathered with fresh, unsalted butter and served with a tangy, sour apricot chutney
Chicken curry – Mildly seasoned and served on the bone
Fish – Caught from the Kempty River, coated in millet past and fried to perfection. Served with apricot chutney
Mutton Kachmoli – An entire sheep rotated over the fire and seasoned sparsely to get an authentic, hunted-barbecue taste
Kachi – Locally prepared citrus liquor with a dash of lemon juice
Momos – A Tibetan gift and much loved. Served with Shezwan chutney
Maggie – Cooked with vegetables, each shop and stall offers its own version
Egg dishes – Hot omelettes and eggrolls on chilly evenings, how can you resist?
Bhaang Ki Khatai – A chutney of bhang seeds, cumin seeds and red chillies cooked in buttermilk and served with parathas
Thechwani – A snack of crushed radish roots and boiled potatoes seasoned with ginger, garlic and coriander

Mussoorie to Kempty Falls

In order to reach Kempty Falls from Mussoorie, you should look for buses heading towards Barkot, Nainbagh, Yamunotri, and Purola. Sometimes Purola buses go via Vikas Nagar which is completely off the route so do confirm with the conductor if you were boarding a Purola Bus. If you were coming from Dehradun, then you can, in fact, catch a direct bus to Kempty Falls without coming to Mussoorie.

You can also take a bus to the Library end of Mussoorie and walk to the Kempty Bus stop from there. From Kempty Bus Stop, you can then take a bus or taxi (or any other vehicle going in that direction) to reach the waterfall.

Bus fare for Library end or Kulri end from Dehradun is Rs. 60 per person and then you will pay another Rs. 15 for Kempty. If you were traveling by your own car then you would have to pay Toll Tax for entering Kempty Village.

Once you reach Kempty Falls, there are two ways to get down to the falls from the road. Either you can take the stairs or hitch a ride in the cable car for Rs.80 per person. This charge is for both getting you down to the waterfall and back up. Make sure you do not throw the ticket away and keep it with you carefully until you are back otherwise the operators will not let you ride back up again.

Camping in Mussoorie

Mussoorie is really a town and there are no camp sites here. There are however a lot of places on outskirts of Mussoorie (towards Dhanaulti) where a lot of camp sites have been set up. You will really have to contact a local tour operator and book in advance.

Ride the Cable Car to Gun Hill

Get a bird's-eye view of Mussoorie and the Doon Valley by taking the red cable car up to Gun Hill from Mall Road. It's known as The Ropeway to Gun Hill, which, at 6,800 feet above sea level, is the second highest peak in the area. It also gets its name from the cannon that the British fired everyday at noon to help people know the time.

Unfortunately, the commercialization at the top of the hill is a disappointment to some. Expect to find a hodgepodge of food stalls, souvenir shops, amusement rides, and local costumes to dress up and be photographed in.

The cable car runs from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in summer, but starts and finishes earlier during the rest of the year. The journey time is only about five minutes, one way. Both the ticket office and boarding point are at Jhula Ghar, located about midway along Mall Road. Tickets cost 125 rupees per person and are in very high demand during peak season.

Like other hill stations in India, Mussoorie also has a Mall Road that runs through the heart of town. This lengthy pedestrian-only boulevard, which visitors gravitate to, starts at Library Bazaar and ends at Kulri Bazaar, featuring a carnival-like atmosphere in summer when it's chock full of people, shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

One of the main attractions is the Jawahar Aquarium. Those interested in Mussoorie's old time charm will find historic Mussoorie Library to be a noteworthy building—unfortunately, you can't go inside though, as it's only open to library members. Bookish types should have a drink at the renowned Writer's Bar at WelcomHotel The Savoy , located just behind the library.

Drop by the Cambridge Book Depot at the Kulri Bazaar end of Mall Road, which is a favorite of author Ruskin Bond, who is there every Saturday between 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to meet fans and sign autographs. Feeling hungry? The best momos in Mussoorie can be found at Momos Tibetan Kitchen, about 300 feet from the Cambridge Book Depot. Nearby, travel-themed Cafe By The Way serves snacks and superb coffee. Keep an eye out for murals depicting the region's customs on Mall Road as well.

Swim at Kempty Falls

If you don't mind unruly crowds and unclean water, the man-made swimming pool at the bottom of Kempty Falls is the place to be in the peak summer season. Such is its popularity that it usually fills to capacity with hundreds of tourists.

Kempty Falls is located about eight miles northwest of Mussoorie. To get there, take a shared taxi from the Gandhi Chowk taxi stand near the library. Government tourism enterprise GMVN also operates buses from the Library Bus Stand and has an office next to it. Those who don't want to climb the stairs to reach the waterfall from the parking area can pay 120 rupees per person to take a cable car all the way up. Changing rooms, lockers, swimwear, and equipment hire are available at a nominal cost.

Alternatively, those who prefer unspoiled natural beauty should give Kempty Falls a miss and go to Bhatta Falls or Jharipani Falls (while they're still secluded) instead.

Marvel Over the Corn Village

Not far past Kempty Falls, Sainji Village is a remarkable offbeat attraction where the buildings are decorated with bunches of corn—the residents, who farm corn, hang it out to dry and preserve the seeds for sowing next season. You may also come across bundles of red chilies drying in the sun.

Sainji's Garhwal English Medium Schoo l was set up by a Canadian woman and her husband, who heads the village, to improve education in the area—volunteers are also accepted. Many upmarket hotels in Mussoorie and Landour, such as Rokeby Manor , also arrange trips to Sainji village to help support the locals. You can spend a day interacting with them, learning about their way of life, and sampling their delicious food, including roti made with corn flour—they love receiving visitors!

Visit Mussoorie's Tibetan Settlement

Happy Valley, established by the Dalai Lama after he fled Tibet in 1959 and now home to around 5,000 Tibetan refugees, is a peaceful place to escape the clamor of Mussoorie and gain insight into the Tibetan way of life. It's possible to hike up from the Library end of Mall Road in about 45 minutes, or you can simply take a taxi.

The highlight is the small but vibrant Shedup Choepelling Buddhist Temple, also known as the Tibetan Buddhist Temple, which is surrounded by carefully maintained gardens and offers a spectacular valley view, especially at sunset. Other attractions here include the magnificent golden Buddha statue atop the hill and the Tibetan school. The student's beautiful artwork can be purchased if you're looking for a meaningful souvenir or gift to bring home.

Learn About Local Culture at SOHAM Heritage and Art Center

SOHAM Heritage & Art Center

This informative private museum was founded in 2014 by yoga exponent Sameer Shukla and his wife Doctor Kavita Shukla, who has a doctorate in drawing and painting, to preserve the heritage of the Himalayan region. It showcases all kinds of items related to the area's people, including photographs of ancient rituals, paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, and handicrafts.

The museum is situated about a 20 minute walk southeast of the Kulri Bazaar and is open daily except Wednesday, and entry is free.

Buy Natural Shawls and Scarves from Local Weavers

Himalayan Weavers

Skip the dime-a-dozen shops on Mall Road and head straight to Himalayan Weavers for exquisite hand-woven shawls and scarves, made from natural fibers such as wool, eri silk, and pashmina that are colored with natural dyes.

Himalayan Weavers was set up in 2005 by Doctor Ghayur Alam and his British wife Patricia, who relocated to the area from Delhi. Their aim was to get the area's residents to stop illegally picking medicinal plants by providing a market and income for their wool and other handmade items.

The business now supports many local weavers, too. Patricia comes up with all the designs and the wool is dyed in a room in the back of their house in Masrana village on Mussoorie-Dhanaulti Road. The house also features a showroom, where the products are displayed and sold, and you'll be able to chat with the knowledgeable owners and learn about the weaving process over a cup of tea. While the products here cost more than the ones you'll find on Mall Road (stoles start from about 800 rupees and shawls from 2,000 rupees), they're pure wool.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Jabarkhet Nature Reserve was established by conservationist Sejal Worah and landowner Vipul Jain, and is the first of its kind in Uttarakhand. A 110-acre, privately-owned and operated forest reserve, it opened to the public in 2015. Walking in its woods is wonderfully rejuvenating and reinvigorating. There are eight well-marked trails, each taking a few hours to cover. You'll come across all kinds of flowers, butterflies, and even mushrooms.

The reserve is situated 2,000 feet above sea level, about a 15-minute drive from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Dhanaulti Road. It's open daily from sunrise until sunset and the entry fee is 350 rupees per person. Guided walks costing 500 rupees per person are offered for those who are keen to know more about the reserve's flora and fauna. Offbeat, bespoke walks including overnight treks and village visits can also be arranged.

If you're feeling energetic, a two-hour scenic hike uphill from Kulri Bazaar will bring you to the highest point in the area, Lal Tibba , or Red Hill, located about 7,500 feet above sea level. There's also a cafe with an observation deck and high powered binoculars to help you enjoy the view.

West of Library Bazaar, you can hike up to surveyor Sir George Everest's House in about two hours for more outstanding views. Further along in the same direction are Cloud End and Echo Point, a private forested estate that you can enter by paying 50 rupees. Picturesque Camel's Back Road is a prominent thoroughfare that connects Library and Kulri bazaars, offering numerous viewpoints, including one across to a camel-shaped rock formation and an old British cemetery.

Entertain the Kids at Company Garden

This sprawling municipal garden, named after the British East India Company, is popular with families. Young kids will enjoy the pedal boats, a wax museum featuring statues of Indian and international celebrities, and assorted rides. There's also an artificial waterfall amid the flowery foliage.

The garden is located on the outskirts of Mussoorie near Happy Valley and on the way to Kempty Falls. It's open daily until sunset and the entry fee is 25 rupees per person. tickets to the wax museum cost 100 rupees per person and rides are extra.

The Mussoorie town is itself surrounded 360 degrees with the majestic Himalayan Peaks (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Chaukhamba, Bandarpunch), Tibet border peaks, and China Border Peaks.

History of Mussoorie –

Why its name is mussoorie –.

Before the British Raj, there was only Shepherds community living in this area, and their cattle used to graze the grasslands called, “Mansoor “. That’s why Mussoorie got its name as “Man- Suri”. Local people started calling it Mansuri and now it is Mussoorie.

Other Facts –

This place was first explored by the person from East India Company, Lt. Frederick Young around 1815. He built a hunting lodge (shooting box) on the Camel’s Back Road His tenure ended in 1844 but today there is no place that exists with the name of Mr. Young. However, there is a Young road in Dehradun where ONGC’s Tel Bhawan is situated. In 1832,
Mussoorie was the center of the “Great Trigonometric Survey”. In this time Mr. George Everest (Surveyor General of that time) stayed there. The highest peak – Mt. Everest is named after him also there is a famous peak in Mussoorie named George Everest peak is also given the name of Mr. George Everest.
In 1959, 14th Dalai Lama took many Tibetan refugees to Mussoorie, and now around 5000 Tibetan refugees are staying in Happy Valley Mussoorie. That’s why it is also called mini Tibet.

Mussoorie Location –

Mussoorie is located at an average elevation of 2000 meters. It is a municipal board that comes under the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand State.

How to Reach Mussoorie –

Mussoorie is easily accessible by road, the road condition is also good. If you are traveling from Delhi or any other place, first you have come to Dehradun. Now from Dehradun, you have to face the curvy hilly road of 34 Km (Around 1 Hrs 30 Min) to reach Mussoorie.

Public transport, Buses from Delhi to Mussoorie –

If you in Delhi and planning the trip to Mussoorie, You can choose public transport as the mode of transportation. For booking the Busses, you have two options – Either to take Uttarakhand Government’s Roadways Buses or make bookings from Redbus. To board the roadways Buses, you have to go to ISBT Kashmiri Gate in Delhi and if you are booking the buses from www.redbus.com , you have to go to the Mori gate for the boarding. A.C. buses are available from Delhi to Mussoorie at the average fare of Rs. 700 whereas for Deluxe Volvo buses it is around Rs. 1000. The distance between Mussoorie and Dehradun is 293 Km and the average time to reach Mussoorie from Delhi is 7 Hrs. The Bus bus will follow this Route to reach Mussoorie from Delhi – From Delhi to Ghaziabad -> Meerut -> Khatauli -> Muzaffarnagar –> Roorkee -> Dehradun – Mussoorie.

In case you will not find the direct buses from Delhi to Mussoorie, then you can book the bus of Dehradun and after reaching Dehradun, you can use any local transport in Dehradun to reach Mussoorie. You will get the local Roadways buses in Dehradun, Near Dehradun railway station.

By Hiring Taxi –

A lot of tour operators and Car rental services are available to hire a taxi from Delhi to Dehradun. From Delhi, the average price of car rental is Rs. 4000 and from Haridwar / Rishikesh the average fare to booking the taxi would be Rs. 2500 and from Dehradun it is average Rs. 1000. Ola / Uber services are available in Dehradun but whereas in Mussorie Ola /Uber are not operating.

By Train –

There is no railway station in Mussoorie but the nearest railway station is in Dehradun. And Dehradun railway station has good connectivity with the other railway stations of the country. Dehradun railway station is 34 Km (1 Hr 25 Mins) from Mussoorie. After a walk-in distance of nearly 200 meters from the railway station you will find the bus station where you can get the bus to Mussoorie. The train will take an average time of 5 to 6 Hrs to reach Mussoorie. The best train from Delhi to Dehradun is Shatabdi Express. It runs 7 days a week but you make sure to book it early. It leaves Delhi at 6:45 AM and reaches Dehradun at 12:50 PM.

There is no Airport in Mussoorie but the nearest airport is in Jollygrant, Dehradun. It has direct flight connectivity from Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Srinagar, and Bangalore. Jollygrant Airport Dehradun is 58 Km. One can easily hire a taxi from there to reach Mussoorie.

Road Conditions if plan for Mussoorie trip :

Mussoorie has got good road connectivity. It is located at the hill so the road is curvy but well maintained. It is 2 Lane road from Dehradun to Mussoorie. As you drive uphills you will have beautiful view od Dehradun city and Doon valley. You will find most of the people capturing this beautiful view into their camera. Mussorie is 34 KM from Dehradun. Dehradun is the plain area so it is having a wonderful geographical advantage to have Mussorie in such a closest distance.

This road connecting Dehardun to Mussorie is having its own charm in different ways. Now this road has become one of the favorite hangout places for the People, mostly youngsters. There are a lot of cafes, and each cafe has got such a nice location that shipping a cup of coffee over the top floor will give you an ultimate view and an unforgettable experience. Mussoorie is almost safe to visit. Although if weather conditions are not good, if it is raining so you should not need to worry. As roads are wide enough from Dehradun to Mussoorie. If there is any landslide then you can face traffic jams over the road. An attentive and experienced driver can take you to the destination safely. In terms of crime rate, Mussoorie is the safest place to visit. Local people are nice and kind enough to welcome you there.

Mussoorie Travel Guide – One of my favorite destination for you to travel is Mussoorie. It is a pleasing hill station in Dehradun in Uttrakhand, India. Mussoorie is 290 km from Delhi and 200 km from Chandigarh.

Mussoorie is the best place for a small trip with friends and couples. It is also safe for “all girls” and solo trips.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN THIS MUSSOORIE TRAVEL GUIDE:

Why mussoorie: queen of hills.

Dehradun is situated under the feet of Himalayas . Mussoorie is the heart of Dehradun. From the diamond cut roads to the captivating beauty of mountain ranges to the green lush delights, Mussoorie at an average altitude of 1,880 m is also known as Queen of Hills .

WHY VISIT MUSSOORIE:

Mussoorie is the most visited hill station in Uttrakhand. The romantic weather of Mussoorie attracts tourists not only from India but all around the world.

The mystic air and serene coolness of the place make it the loveliest hill station of Uttrakhand. It is also famous for destination weddings.

Many celebrities have done their weddings and pre-wedding photo shoots in Mussoorie.

QUICK HISTORY OF MUSSOORIE:

A long time ago even before British, there were only shepherds in the area whose animals would graze on the ‘ mansoor ’ shrub; a type of lentil indigenous to the area which gives the town its name. The town is in fact often referred to as ‘ Mansoori ‘ by locals.

Mussoorie was founded by Lt. Frederick Young of East India Company. He came to the hills for the purpose of shooting games. The first house made on the ridge of Mussoorie was a small hut built on the Camel’s back as a shooting box.

HOW TO REACH MUSSOORIE:

There are several ways to reach Mussoorie. It is only 30 km from Dehradun. Being the capital of Uttrakhand, Dehradun is well connected by trains, airways, and roads. I went to Mussoorie with my friends and family.

There is no direct bus or train to reach Mussoorie. I have visited Mussoorie twice.

Once we visited Mussoorie by hiring one private cab and another time I booked an AC sleeper bus from Kashmere Gate, Delhi for Rs 1200/person.

It took 7 hours to reach Dehradun bus stand. We walked nearby to Dehradun Railway Station and took a local bus from there for Rs 20/person to reach Mussoorie bus stand i.e. Library Chawk . Check out my full travelogue and story from Delhi to Mussoorie for all your detail

HOW LONG TO VISIT MUSSOORIE: 2 DAYS

Mussoorie is a small hill station so it takes only 2 days to cover the major sights of the place. I suggest 2 days are enough to roam around Mussoorie. You could spend more time to do some adventurous activities which can take your whole day.

PLACES TO VISIT IN MUSSOORIE:

I will guide you with the five best places to visit in two days. There are many more good places but I consider the best if you are visiting only for 2 days. These places would definitely take your heart away with their stupendous views.

KEMPTY FALLS AND ROPEWAY

It is a perfect picnic spot for enjoying a gala time. It has milky streams of water falling from 41 ft. There are a lot of stairs which lead to the actual spot where the water collects.

The water is extremely cold and can give you chills. Besides it, a number of shops are available to provide you swimming clothes, floaters and can safely keep your valuables at lockers for a nominal charge.

Nearby to it, there is a ropeway to explore the panorama view of Dehradun-Mussoorie trail and enjoy the elevated lush green mountains, valleys and terrains. It costs Rs 80/person for such a beautiful ride.

CLOUD’S END

As the name suggest, Cloud’s End is the geographical end of Mussoorie hill station. It is at a distance of 6 km from Mussoorie Mall Road and you can reach there by a local taxi available. It is a peaceful small trek with the breathtaking views of Aglar River Valley . During monsoon, it is often covered with clouds and fog. You can actually feel the picturesque Cloud’s End. You can also witness various photo shoots of pre-wedding here like I did when I went.

The heart of Mussoorie has Mall road in it. Mall Road has a plethora of shops selling different items. From hats to socks, a scarf to bracelets and a video game parlor to delicious food, everything is available in Mall Road. There are antique lampposts and benches for having good photographs.

You may witness novel writer, Ruskin Bond in some bookstore as Mussoorie is his favorite hill station too. Some mouth-watering street food and tea are also the charm of Mall Road. Balloon shooting with a gun, the best time pass game for me, is available very cheap in Mall Road. There is also a multiplex where we watched a movie at night.

COMPANY GARDEN

Company Garden is a well-liked tourist attraction in Mussoorie city. It is about 3 km from Mall Road. The lush greenery of company garden with more than 850 types of flowering plants, a fountain in the lawn and a greenhouse nursery attracts tourists to this place.

Also, there is an artificial mini-lake with paddle boats for people. It has its own food court serving mouth-watering food and snacks. People come here to stroll and sit in the garden and have a telescopic view of Himalayan Mountain at a cost of Rs 10 only.

BENONG WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The benong Wildlife Sanctuary is about 11 km from Library Point and is a part of Rajaji National Park . This place seeks great attention of tourists for its rare species of birds, almost-extinct mountain quails, The White Capped Water Redstart, Red-Billed Blue Magpie, Leopard, Panther or Himalayan goats.

It is ideal for a refreshing walk for nature lovers as it hosts old-cedar trees, pine trees, and other medicinal plants.

GOOD MUSSOORIE HOTELS/HOSTELS:

There are many good hotels/hostels in Mussoorie which are less expensive . The hotels can be booked in the range of Rs 1500-3000/night for two people. The hostel can be a book under Rs 600/person for one night. I have been to below hotels/hostels.

PEOPLE AND FOOD IN MUSSOORIE:

People of Mussoorie are very grounded. They live a simple life. Tourism is the main occupation for them. If you talk to the drivers or people at the restaurant about themselves, you would find them friendly and interesting.

Food is made in a simple style in all the restaurants here like less spicy. Either you go to Mall Road or other places in Mussoorie you would find less expensive and delicious food unless you are going to JW Marriot :P

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:

Public Bus is available from Dehradun to Mussoorie and back with a frequency of around 1 hour. You can always have an option to book a shared or private taxi from the Taxi Stand at some fixed rate written there. You can also hire a private cab for the whole day for site-seeing for Rs 1000-2000. Cycle Rickshaws are also one option for roaming around the Mall Road.

WHAT’S GOOD AND NOT SO GOOD

To be very honest, I would say there are a number of many more places to visit in Mussoorie but the above said are the best ones. You would enjoy your trip to Mussoorie if you better go in your vehicle. Or you can take a bike or scooty on rent from there.

Otherwise, you have to hire a taxi which sometimes charges a lot. Book your hotels before you go to Mussoorie. Moreover, always check the weather before going. You can go through the government website for more information Uttrakhand Tourism .

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Mussoorie for pleasant weather is from April to June. If you want to enjoy winter or snow fall, December to February is the best time. July and August are the monsoon months and it is not recommended to visit Mussoorie. Always check the weather of the place before planning the trip.

" Himalayas are calling me, Br0!! Can we go to Mussoorie? ", I blabbered the previous day morning. To my surprise hands went up shouting " I'm Ready ,Dude " and within hours one became four.And it all started there. After few hours we were all done to start the trip but a notification popped up saying " 29 died in Yamuna Expressway due to poor visibility ". And the news totally killed the vibe. Hesitation started knocking our hearts. Fear about life was not so distant. All the " Have a safe Journey!! " messages transformed into " Stop the Journey ". We had no idea what to do. From the corner of the room I heard a voice " Guys,we are not going to do anything by simply sitting here.Let's take some risk. " An hour later bags were on our shoulders, keys were in our hands and helmets were armoring our heads. Yeah!!We started our journey.

A foggy Friday morning it was and so we started late. It was almost 10 am . when we started our journey. The city was bustling and jam-packed and it nearly an hour to cross the city border. Ruining our happiness even the Ghaziabad-Meerut Expressway was also crowded. After a prolonged journey we reached by Meerut by 3 pm. The route from Meerut to Dehradun was comparatively good and we reached Dehradun on time. Mussoorie was then not far away from us, just 30 km. The route was splendid and the throttle was at its max even at hills. At last we were in Mussoorie by 9 pm.

' The Queen of Hills ' - was no longer a dream for us.Still I remember that smile we exchanged after reaching Mussoorie safe. After a long tiring journey of 300 km we decided to rest ourselves. We found a good hotel (Hotel Premji) a couples of kilometers from the mall road and we rested there. We were not likely to have a walk or experience the local beauty of Mussoorie that day as we were tired.

Though the Sun was shining bright, we couldn't get out of the room as it was freezing cold outside. Still I remember those early morning camp fire which we had in outskirts of the city to escape the cold. However we got ready to witness one the best gardens in India, the Company Bagh also known as Municipal Gardens . It had almost everything, a mini lake, colorful flowers, a small waterfall, a mini market and an amusement park. Having spent an hour there we then decided to go to Cloud's end.

After spending a great time in the Bagh, we went somewhere where we haven't ever been so far. YEAH!! To touch the clouds. With overwhelming excitement we enquired about that place. The immediate response from the locals was "Don't go there, the roads will not be good and no one will go there." As many started saying the same thing we became curious about that resort. So we headed towards the resort. After couple of kilometers we felt that going there beyond the local's warning was a bad decision as the road was bad and steeper and the worst part is we couldn't find anyone coming there except those birds from Benog wildlife Sanctuary which accompanied us. A narrow road passing through the dense forest made our ride more interesting. Somehow we managed to go there. But we were not fortunate enough to see the clouds that day. But the view of the hills from there was magnificent that it buried all our disappointments. Not only the view, the one seventy year old resort was also amazing. The Colonel Styled resort was well maintained and I had never seen this kind of resort before.

It was noon and the sun was shining bright. We had no choice other than going to the Happy Valley. As we were entering the area we found something different there. Yeah!! It was a Tibetan Colony. It was calm enough that you could hear even a pin fall. Adding more charm to it there was a small Buddhist temple in the middle. " What's up there. It's even more colorful " I exclaimed in joy pointing the Flag hill. With colorful flags all around the hill and a small Buddha statue in the middle it was attractive enough to gain everyone's attention and who were we to escape from that. It was totally mesmerizing and we were in no mood to leave that place. But we had to.

If we wanna go to Gun Hill point from the Flag Hill there is no road other than this. A narrow road at the edge of hill stretching for 3 kms really made our day. With a series of deadly view points on the way and sharp turns it was a really breath-taking ride. We were curious to know the why this name came to this road so we asked a local guy. He then showed us one of the most spectacular thing through a telescope. We could see a camel shaped rock formation on the top of the hill.

The Sun was about to set and we starting climbing the Gun Hill Point , the second highest peak in Mussoorie. The road to the point was inclined at 60 degree and it really tested our driving skills. Though it was hard somehow we made it. It was a perfect evening. The blood draining sky was even more majestic from the Gun Hill Point. Himalayan view on the one end and the entire city on the other side, it was a perfect spot to chill out in the evening.

It was all about the day and we went to explore the locals markets of Mussoorie and there can't be a better place than The Mall Road . An old traditional market had almost everything. There can't be a better moment than sitting in the benches under those pleasing yellow lamps and starring at each other and discuss something naughty amidst the crowd.

After a peaceful sleep we went to explore something different the next day. Have your ever heard of a laboratory at an altitude of 7000 ft. .Yeah ! We went there. The road was very tough and it was one of the riskiest roads I have ever seen. With rocks, holes and pebbles all along the road it was really pumping the adrenaline. Just a small mistake and we would be 6000 ft . down in the Doon valley . With all fears in our heart and after a tough driving we reached the top of the hill and we found the remains of Sir George Everest's house ( The man who found the Mt.Everest). With a serene mind and pleasant weather we had a cup of tea in a small shop over there. I can't really forget those moments with a small cute boy who made the pleasant morning even more beautiful.

There can be no place in Mussoorie except the Mighty Kempty fall to let yourself free on a hot afternoon. Surrounded by mountain cliffs on both sides and falling from an height of 100ft ., the Kempty Falls was the main attraction there. The fall was such that it had lake at every 25 ft. Time was just passing away as we were playing in those pools. And we could see a rope car leading to a lake at the bottom of the hill. The rope car also had never failed to amaze us by showing us one of the best views of the falls. It lead to a small lake down surrounded by green trees on all sides which gave us a Natural bliss.

A trip to Mussorrie would be incomplete without a visit to Lal Tibba, the highest point in Mussoorie. We were fortunate that day and we could able to see the Himalayas from there without the mist. Like a white bedding, the snow was covering the peaks. We could never take our eyes of those snow covered peaks. The telescopes installed here are priceless, and aids in cherishing the beautiful unfettering panoramas of the Nilkantha peak in Badrinath and Kedarnath peak.

10 kms down the Lal tibba we found this small natural waterfall hidden from the eyes of tourists. It was not big as the Kempty but it had the natural charm which I liked the most in it. Deep inside the forest and with no people we almost felt the real peace there.

Not as big as other lakes, this lake was artificially constructed and had many adventure activities. Adventure!! How could we leave Mussoorie without it.Yeah!! It was Zip-Lining this time. The 600 meter zip lining was breath-taking and I loved it absolutely. The Sun was about to set and we knew it's time to bid a goodbye to Mussoorie and head towards Dehradun.

I have traveled a lot but the feeling which I had while leaving Mussoorie was a new and a different one. The Queen was that much attractive and lovely that I had to leave her with no hearts. I still remember that moment when I wiped my eyes when I saw the sign board saying " Thank you . Visit us once again ". It happens every time but we had to keep on moving and exploring something new in this world. Mountains..Music..Slow Drive and we were in Dehradun . It was almost the end of the day so we had nothing to do in Dehradun except to go to our hotel (Hotel Embassy).

It was a different and an unexpected morning experience for us. We were walking into the Robber's Cave . Canopied by rocks on both sides, roofed by trees on the top and water kissing our feet was a lifetime experience to me. We took our own time there and had a lots of fun. A small waterfall inside a cave left us wondered. Artificial or Natural - The first question which popped up as soon as I saw that for which I still got no answer. After spending a long time there we decided to return to Delhi.

We had to race against time to reach Delhi before night. Speeding though highways and tackling the traffic we somehow managed to reach Delhi by 9 pm . A three day trip came to an end and we knew it's not the end of our journey, it's just end of an trip. " Travel is the best Education ", they said. But I never understood the meaning before this trip. Seriously, it taught me a lot. Stop looking for happiness in the same place you lost it, just travel somewhere to find the real happiness. It's not always about discovering new places, it's rediscovering yourself . Travel a lot until your homeland feels you like a stranger. Until then don't stop.

The hill stations in the north of India are some of the most beautiful sights your eyes can behold in this amazing country.

The famous locations like Shimla and Manali of Himachal draw many tourists and are probably on your bucket list, but have you heard of Mussoorie?

It’s the tiny, picturesque hill station underdog which you’ve never heard of. Sitting in Uttrakhand, it’s a smooth 30km uphill from the capital city of the state Dehradun.

It stands at 2000 metres above sea level, so you’ll definitely feel the altitude and a massive drop in temperature!

For me, it was amazing just to get here and feel cold. Even though it is the monsoon period right now in India; in Rajasthan , it still can be extremely humid and sticky.

Mussoorie is quiet, peaceful, and sits above the clouds. It’s named the Queen of Hills and quite rightly so!

When you alight from the bus stand, you’ll be greeted by the green rolling hills, rice terraces, and chilly mist which creates a very cool setting for a getaway.

How to travel to Mussoorie Hill Station in India?

Mussoorie is accessible from the capital city of Dehradun in Uttrakahand. It’s close to Delhi and you can get there in around 6 hours by bus journey up north.

It’s super cheap to grab a bus from Kashmere gate and will cost you around 600 rupees for an AC Volvo bus. For non-AC or government buses, it will be half the price.

The easiest and cheapest way to get up the hill from Dehradun is to take one of the local government Volvo buses up the winding roads.

A single ticket will cost you next to nothing at 56 rupees. As it’s government-funded, you have a guarantee of not getting ripped off.

A big tip for getting the local buses in India is to sit by the window! A lot of them are non-AC and so, if it’s hot, it can get stifling.

Luckily, this bus service is heading up into the mountains and so you may find you’re a little chilly!

If you’re planning to fly, the nearest airport is Jolly Grant which sits between Rishikesh , Dehradun, and Haridwar. From here, you will need to get a taxi up to Mussoorie.

The best place to stay in Mussoorie

In the summer months, hill stations are where everyone wants to be to escape the heat. So, be prepared to pay a lot of money for a room during this season anywhere up north.

Mussoorie is no exception. Luckily for me, I arrived in the monsoon where the rain cooled everything down.

It’s classed as ‘low season’, so the hotels are cheap and cheerful.

Plus, as the weather was cold, I didn’t need an air-conditioned room which made it even cheaper!

Top tip for booking a hotel in Mussoorie

Rather than book online, I’ve gotten into the habit of just turning up and negotiating rates while I’m here.

You’ll find a lot of hawkers approach you to book rooms when you’re in any place in India. So, you’re always guaranteed to find somewhere.

This way, you can save some serious money as the hotels charge more online.

This is because the hotels have to pay a commission to advertise on company websites such as Booking.com and Makemytrip.

So, if you’re negotiating directly, you may get a better deal. These online room prices also don’t always include the new GST (Goods and Services Tax) which is a standardised tax across all of India. So, you may have to pay that extra to the hotel.

Like with any hill station, it’s always important to check where your hotel is based. A lot of the hotels will advertise for the area, but it may be too far out from the centre and all the attractions.

This means that you’ll be paying more for taxis or rickshaws if you don’t want to walk everywhere. The best bet is to stick in and around Mall Road. This is where the action is!

These roads have all the shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels you could want so you’re never too far away if you need something.

My hotel recommendations for Mussoorie

If you’re looking for luxury, I would personally recommend a night’s stay at the Welcomhotel The Savoy .

Although located on the busy Mall Road, it’s perched high on a hill out the way from the traffic.

It’s like a fairy tale palace in the hills. For more budget range, there is Hotel Paradise Mansion which was clean and quiet too.

Top things to do in Mussoorie Hill Station

As it’s a popular family holiday destination to escape the heat, you’ll find that there are lots of things to do in Mussoorie that are geared it all up to suck the rupees out of you.

Wax museums, aquariums, arcades, and all the commercialised fun is all here for you to enjoy if that’s what you would like to do.

Personally, as the monsoon season has made the hills a beautiful glistening green, I wanted to see some of the natural beauty that the Doon valley of Uttrakahand had to offer.

Mussoorie hill station is a jewel in itself and there are lots to get stuck into. Here are the top places to visit in Mussoorie!

Camel Back Road

The easy flat stroll along Camel Back Road is the perfect escape from the busy Mall Road which sits behind it if you’re not looking to trek up to the peaks.

During this 5 kilometre walk, you can see beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayas, forestry, and the famous Camel Rock.

As it was monsoon season and the rain creates a mist, it was quite difficult to pinpoint the Camel Rock. But, luckily, I caught a picture of it just for a second.

It’s located high on the hill, so you’ll need a pretty good camera lens to get a shot of it.

Here is my ultra blurry picture for your amusement haha! Even with my DLSR camera, I didn’t stand a chance of getting a good picture in the mist.

Top places to visit on Camel Back Road

When you carry on around the hill, you can see view area points along the way.

My favourite viewpoint was the Hawa Mahal Pagoda which is nearest to the library end of Mall Road.

It was a cute little archway, which, on a clear day, can provide some incredible views of the hills.

As I was here during Monsoon, I didn’t get perfect views but it was magical walking through the clouds.

Every so often, the hills would shine through and then cloud over again. It was a fascinating time!

Mussoorie Municipal gardens

Located 5km outside of Mussoorie is the Municipal gardens are a pretty place to visit.

Boasting a flower show, boating on the lake and a waterfall it’s a welcome distraction for an afternoon.

How to reach Mussoorie Municipal Gardens

To get here, you can hire a rickshaw from Mall Road for 150 rupees each way. Getting a rickshaw to the gardens in monsoon sounds fun, but when the heavens decide to open, they open UP! It was tropical heavy rain.

Luckily, the rickshaw driver had an umbrella and his rickshaw had a little plastic cover you could put in front of us. At one point, the driver asked us to get out and walk for a few minutes in the rain due to it being uphill.

The poor guy must have been knackered. As it was raining cats and dogs outside, the road was flowing like a river! We had to make a run for it!

We got absolutely soaked head to toe and so when we got to the gardens we sought shelter in the food court.

What is inside Mussoorie Municipal Gardens?

The park costs 18 rupees to enter which is dirt cheap and does have a nice waterfall.

I wanted to go boating, but as the guys were literally taking buckets of yucky water out of them, I thought I’d give it a miss!

The waterfall is definitely worth a see, it’s not natural but you could never tell. It’s really picturesque.

Kempty Falls

This was one of my favourite things to do in Mussoorie, although it’s not really in Mussoorie hill station at all!

All the pictures of Mussoorie advertise these falls as a way to draw you in, but the falls are actually located around 13 kilometres away downhill in a little place called Kempty. But, the journey is SO worth it!

In peak season, these falls attract thousands of tourists a day as you can bathe in the cool waters below. But, if you go in the off-season, you pretty much have this to yourself which is pretty awesome!

I read that if there was heavy rain, they may not allow swimming in the falls due to it being dangerous. So, I was crossing everything as I wanted to jump in :P

The journey down to Kempty Falls

We got up nice and early and made our way over to the falls. I also read online that the walk down was pretty treacherous so was hoping to get the cable car that runs up and down to the swimming point.

But, as it didn’t open until 9 am, we headed down by foot. The step way to the falls was completely fine!

It’s pretty safe, just go easy when it’s been raining as you could slip over. Although it is a natural waterfall that is accessible for free and it’s open from sunrise to sunset, the whole of the Kempty Falls area is overrun with shops, restaurants, attractions, and rides.

I was a little disappointed as it’s an area of natural beauty, so it should really be preserved as such. Let’s just say, I didn’t expect a 3D simulator right next to it!

But, this is India so I guess it’s just the way it is. When you reach the falls, there’s a safe area for swimming.

Swimming in Kempty Falls

You can hire swimsuits, lockers, and towels at a cheap price if you find yourself without. The force of the falls during the monsoon was truly amazing!

It was pretty cold as it was monsoon time, but it felt amazing to get in the water.

Being a woman travelling in India, I don’t always like to show off my body as it’s not really accepted their culture and draws in some attention I would rather avoid.

So, I would recommend covering up if you do decide to go for a dip. After, you can enjoy a nice chai to warm you up!

Mussoorie Mall Road

The Mussoorie mall road is similar to those in other hill stations and is a great central location to base yourself.

The buses will run to either end of this road, either the Library end at Gandhi Chowk or the Picture Palace side. Either one provides great access to hotels, restaurants etc.

But, if you end up at the wrong end you could face a 4km walk so best to get a rickshaw!

The best part for me of the mall road was the awesome views. You would get amazing views of the mountains in one minute, then it would completely cloud over. So, you felt like you were walking above the clouds!

Great restaurants are here including the Mountain Café for coffee, Argarwal’s vegetarian restaurant, and the Mussoorie sweet shop which serves up the best Gulab Jamun dessert on the strip!

Afternoon Tea at the Savoy Hotel Mussoorie

During monsoon season, it can be quite difficult to find stuff to do as India only sees rain like this for 2 months of the year!

I’m finding that escaping into beautiful cafés for chai or a ginger lemon honey tea is a great monsoon activity.

If you’re a fan of heritage hotels, look no further than a cup of coffee at the Savoy.

You can enjoy a few hours in their grand dining room. The staff here were so lovely and let us have a look around the Savoy hotel Mussoorie.

They took us into their ballroom and the chandeliers were so perfect. I could only imagine what it would have been like when it opened in 1902!

Mussoorie Hill Station was honestly so beautiful. I couldn’t believe how close this was to Delhi , so it’s the perfect getaway to paradise if you’re tired of the busy city and stifling heat!

I would definitely recommend this place in monsoon season as it doesn’t have the stickiness that comes with the humidity from the rain in other parts of the country. It was so lovely just to feel chilly.

Who doesn’t know the Queen of Hills, Mussoorie? A place quite popular among all the groups of travellers. From newly wedded couples to elderly couples, Mussoorie is loved by everyone equally.

So what was I doing in the town that is heavily touristy and cliched? Well, I was there to dig the off-beat places, something not on everyone’s radar when they visit Mussoorie.

A little research, beyond google search pages, is all it takes to discover the best-kept secrets of a place. While I visited the famous cafes in Mussoorie because I cannot resist food, I tried to avoid all places that had a lot of people for obvious reasons.

I was mesmerized to find the hidden waterfalls in the middle of a jungle, corners of the town to capture the best sunsets and a hotel with absolutely breathtaking views of the town, Mussoorie.

How to Reach Mussoorie?

Mussoorie is easily accessible by any means of transport, one of the advantages when you visit popular destinations.

The nearest railway stations are in Dehradun and Rishikesh, 32 KM & 73 KM respectively.

The nearest airport is in Dehradun, 58 KM away. Cabs and buses for Mussoorie are conveniently available at the airport.

A major chunk of tourists arrives in Mussoorie from New Delhi. Thanks to 6.5 hours long beautiful stretch of circular bending roads that make the journey memorable for many.

Plenty of buses, both state and private, ply from cities like Dehradun, New Delhi and Rishikesh for Mussoorie.

Where to Stay in Mussoorie?

Mussoorie is flooded with hotels, and when I say flooded, I mean it. There’s no area in the town where you cannot find a place to stay. You would see brokers standing in the streets, calling out the tourists looking for hotels.

From resorts to boutique hotels to economical hotels, all options are readily available in Mussoorie. Club Mahindra, Larisa Resort, Sterling and all other of leading hotel chains have their presence in Mussoorie.

Well, if you are willing to spend a little more from your pocket, I would recommend staying in a classic boutique hotel in Landour. La Villa Bethany and Rokeby Manor good options.

Landour is a tiny cantonment area approximately 6KM uphill from Mussoorie.

For backpackers, Zostel is a good option, but it is 11 KM ahead of Mussorie near a village called Baglo ki Kandi.

I stayed at a hotel 1 KM ahead Library Chowk, towards the road leading to Geroge Everest’s house. I chose Omkar Hotel for two reasons, it was secluded and had an awesome view from the window right in front of the bed.

Best time to visit Mussoorie

Months between October to February are part of Winter season in the town. Winter is the best time to visit Mussoorie. During Winters, between December to February, Mussoorie receives a considerable amount of snowfall, resulting in a surge in tourist influx.

To escape the heat of North India, visit Mussoorie between April to June for breezy Summers.

Off-Beat Places to Explore in Mussoorie

Sainji – the corn village.

Visiting Sainji village would undoubtedly be a unique experience for you. It is situated 5 KM ahead of the famous Kempty Falls in Mussoorie. Every house in Sainji adorns bunches of corns hung upside down, turning the hues of surrounding into golden yellow.

The main purpose of hanging corns is to dry them up so that the same can be used as seed for the next year, but it works as house decor as well for the entire village.

You can stroll around the village, interact with the villagers, and binge eat local delicacies made out of corns. I loved makke di roti with fresh coriander chutney.

Jharipani Waterfalls

Unlike Kempty falls and Bhatta falls, Jharipani waterfalls managed to save itself from the wrath of over-tourism mainly because one needs to hike for 2KM through the jungle to reach the falls. Jharipani is situated 7 KM away from Mussoorie in Barlow Ganj.

This colossal waterfall creates a cold water pool at the verdant foothills in the middle of a jungle. If you’re visiting during the summer, drench yourself in the ice-cold water and enjoy your time here. It’s an ideal spot for photographers to capture vivid flora and birds surrounding the hills and the waterfall.

Be very cautious while driving to the falls. The roads are narrow and go steep downhill.
You can park your vehicle near the starting point of the hike.
Plan to go in a group as the location is secluded from any habitation.

Happy Valley

While the usual tourist spots in Mussoorie remain overcrowded, Happy Valley still stands in tranquillity. It is only 2 KM from Library Chowk in Mussoorie. It’s eerie, but I think the lack of popularity of Happy Valley makes it’s worth visiting. Happy Valley is a Tibetan Refugee settlement similar to the one in Coorg. But it is much more than a mere refugee settlement.

It has splendid views of the valley, Shedup Choepelling Temple (Buddhist Monastery), and Panoramic Dalai Hill. However, the Monastery was closed due to pandemic restrictions.

A small hike of 500 meter takes you to Dalai Hills. Zillions of Tibetan flags are fluttering in the wind all through the well-marked trail. There is a majestic statue of Buddha soaring at the hill-top. When you move past the statue, there’s a meadow where you can enjoy evening snacks while admiring the sun setting behind the mountains.

Interestingly, LBSNAA, the premier institute for civil service officers training, is clearly visible from Dalai Hills.

Mossy Falls and the Hidden Shiva Temple

On the way to Jharipaani waterfall lies a small waterfall called Mossy Falls. The fascinating fact about Mossy falls is that there is a hidden Lord Shiva temple just beside the falls. A cave-like structure makes the temple premise that is accessible by a bridge passing over a brook coming from the falls.

Bunglow-ki-Kaandi Village

Backpacker’s favourite chain of hostels, Zostel, has its presence in Mussoorie also. It is situated on the outskirts of the town, Bunglow ki Kaandi, a gorgeous village in the foothills of mountains.

If you’re someone who loves discovering little joys in the woods and hamlet, you would absolutely enjoy a walk through this traditional Gharwali village.

Nature Walk along with Benog Wildlife Sanctuary

For all the nature and wildlife lovers, a day-long hike across the Benog wildlife sanctuary would take them through several water streams, natural ponds and abundance of flora and fauna. Catch the butterflies, click great photographs and enjoy the views of majestic Himalayas.

Top Tourist Places to See in Mussoorie

Jwala devi temple.

Jwala Devi temple is one of the oldest temples in Mussoorie. Every year the temple attracts thousands of pilgrims and nature enthusiasts. As the temple lies atop Begong Hills at 2100 meters, one has to hike for 2 KM through the shades of pine and deodar trees to reach the shrine. The reason for its popularity among nature enthusiasts is that it offers a panoramic view of Shivalik Range of the Himalayas on one side and Mussoorie on the other.

This colonial-era house, built in 1832, is a famous heritage site that brings back the memories of British India. Sir George Everest served as the Surveyor General of India (from 1830 to 1843). And the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest was named after him to by the British to acknowledge his invaluable contributions.

To reach Geroge Everest house, one has to hike through a well-marked cemented trail. It took me around 20 minutes to finish the hike. The trail ahead of the ruins of the house leads to George Everet Peak surrounded with Tibetan prayer flags. The view from the top is surreal. You can also pitch camps near George Everest Peak.

Recently the Government of Uttarakhand announced the Hot Air Balloon facility in Mussoorie. And I was lucky enough to witness the inauguration of the same at George Everest Peak.

Nag Devta Temple

Nag Devta Temple is another ancient temple situated 6 KM away from the main town of Mussoorie. As the name suggests, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who carries snake around his neck. Lord Shiva is believed to visit the temple as a snake to bless the pilgrims on the occasion of Nag Panchami. The temple premises has spectacular views of Doon valley and Mussoorie.

Just a 15 minutes walk from Char Dukaan junction, Lal Tibba is a famous viewpoint from where the gorgeous Himalayas are clearly visible. Admire the beauty of mother nature while sipping your hot tea. Nothing can be better than this feeling.

Char Dukaan

It’s a popular junction in Landour where you’ll find four cafes serving delicious snacks. All the cafes in Char Dukaan have their loyal customer base, and these cafes remain crowded, especially during weekends. Honestly, I didn’t try anything from there as I hogged on food at Cafe Ivy.

Cafe Hopping

If you’re a food lover then my dear friend Mussoorie and Landour won’t disappoint you. There are several cafes in Landour and Mussoorie that serve scrumptious food. Don’t miss the burgers of Cafe By the Way , Banana Walnut Cake at Landour Bakehouse , Pizza at Little Llama Cafe , Aglio e Olio Sppagehtti at Cafe Ivy .

Meet Ruskin Bond

I believe all of us have read the epic stories of Ruskin Bond back in school days. I still read his stories because nobody can portray the image of the Himalayas as he does. And this legend lives in Landour. He often comes to Cambridge Book Depot at Mall Road in Mussoorie to meet and greet his fans. Who knows if you get lucky and meet him?

Please confirm the timings and days with the book depot before making your plans. Earlier it used to be every Saturday between 3:30 to 5:30 PM.

About Mussoorie

The quiet and quaint little Himalayan town is like a travel back in time, trapped in the previous century. Sitting on the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas, Mussoorie is surrounded by the Doon Valley and Shiwalik Ranges. The town has an average elevation of 6578 feet with the highest point at Lal Tibba, at 7476 feet in adjoining town of Landour.

The town’s name is a derivation of ‘ mansur’ , an exotic Himalayan shrub, endemic to the region. Mussoorie was established in 1803 when the Gorkhas under Umer Singh Thapa conquered the Garhwal region. Later with the British invasion, they lost their territory and became a part of the British government. In 1825, a British military officer, Captain Young, re-established the hill station as a resort town, the popularity of which still remains.

Mussoorie can easily be reached by train. The nearest railway station is in Dehradun, about 36 KM away. There are a host of trains to from major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Amritsar, Jammu etc. From Dehradun station, you can book a cab from Dehradun to Mussoorie to reach the queen of hills.

You can travel two ways to Mussoorie by road.

You can take a bus – The town is well-connected by bus routes from nearby cities like Delhi, Dehradun , and other major cities/towns of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. There are daily and direct bus services and in both state and private buses that operate between these routes.

You can take a car – You can reach Delhi or Dehradun and rent a car or book a cab to reach Mussoorie . From Dehradun, it takes only an hour and a half to Mussoorie. The distance between Delhi and Mussoorie is 300 km. You can book a cab from Delhi to Mussoorie to reach there within 8 hrs. There are two routes – Saharanpur Road and NH 44 to reach Mussoorie from Delhi. For a faster, better, and enjoyable travel experience, we recommend a road trip from Delhi to Mussoorie by car.

Mussoorie does not have an airport so there are no direct flights from other parts of the country. There are only 2 airports nearby– Dehradun and Delhi.
