What Other Explorers Say

Loved stopping off to see the viaduct at Glenfinnan before going on to Mallaig to join the train. Also our driver/tour guide Cara was so good, she clearly enjoys her job and her enthusiasm really shone through. She drove us safely while telling us loads of interesting information about the places we passed and where we were going and also Scottish history. Although it was a very long day we had plenty of stops and thought it was worth the money.

Jenny was an outstanding tour guide and driver! She was very polite and knowledgeable and took us to many stops where we were able to take some amazing photos. We did a total of 3 tours with this company during our stay all of which were great, but this was the best because of Jenny!

Beautiful places, breath taking views. The Glenfinnan Viaduct is dream come true. So much history and movie location to spot. Our driver Louise was very nice.

The views were amazing we took so many photos the train was fabulous we enjoyed every second of it we will definitely do it again next year when we visit. I would highly recommend.

Cara was an outstanding guide! Such a value add to an incredible day! We saw so much more than we were expecting - the history was fascinating and the tour was beautiful!

Great day into the Scottish highlands with Louise as our guide. She is as excited to be on the tour as her passengers. She made a long day of driving fun, humorous, and informative. Book early and enjoy the scenery and hogwarts magic

Dusty is great! He is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. I loved learning about some of this history while en route. The stops were timed well. There was lots of opportunities for Harry Potter fans to get some good pictures.

Our journey into the Highlands begins

We will then embark on the next leg of our journey, venturing northwest into the breath-taking landscapes of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. This stunning area, known for its serene lochs, rolling hills, and dense woodlands, offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and tranquillity. As we wind our way through this picturesque region, you’ll have the opportunity to take in the dramatic scenery.

We will then continue our expedition further north, where the landscape grows even more awe-inspiring. Our path leads us to the majestic Glen Coe, a place steeped in history and renowned for its rugged beauty. Surrounded by towering mountains and sweeping valleys, Glen Coe is often considered one of Scotland’s most iconic and evocative landscapes. As we approach this historic glen, you’ll be captivated by its wild, untamed beauty and the sense of grandeur that permeates the area.

We will then make our way to the pretty village of Fort Augustus. This village sits on the southern shores of Loch Ness, so you’ll have plenty of time and some fantastic vantage points to try to spot to the elusive monster, Nessie. There may be the option to join a cruise here if you’d like to explore further.

Fort Augustus will be your overnight stop. It is a charming village, known for its scenic views and the Caledonian Canal’s impressive flight of locks. The village offers a peaceful retreat with its quaint atmosphere, surrounded by lush landscapes and steeped in history.

Overnight: Fort Augustus, Loch Ness

Explore Loch Ness and the surrounding area

We’ll spend the morning in Fort Augustus, where you can decide to join a cruise of Loch Ness if you’d like to explore further. Or just enjoy your time in this pretty village.

On this day we will also make a visit to the iconic Eilean Donan Castle. Perched on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, the castle is one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks. Surrounded by stunning Highland scenery, the castle has a rich history dating back to the 13th century and has played a key role in various historical events, including the Jacobite rebellions. Restored in the early 20th century, Eilean Donan now offers visitors a glimpse into Scotland’s past with its well-preserved interiors, exhibits, and breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape.

After exploring the castle you will head over the bridge to the Isle of Skye to your base for the evening.

A full day on the Isle of Skye

On the third day, you’ll have the entire day to explore the Isle of Skye with your expert driver-guide, who will tailor the itinerary to ensure you make the most of your time on this enchanting island. Your journey may include stops at remarkable sites such as the Cuillin Mountains, Dun Beag Broch, the Black Houses, the Kilt Rock Waterfall, The Old Man of Storr, and the breathtaking Trotternish Peninsula, as well as a visit to the island’s charming capital, the coastal town of Portree. This unforgettable Scottish experience offers the perfect opportunity to discover waterfalls, natural springs, and historic landmarks, all set against some of the most stunning landscapes in Scotland.

After a second restful night on Skye, we will head to the south of Skye then join a ferry from Armadale to the beautiful fishing village on Mallaig (subject to availability), located on the West Coast of the Scottish mainland, which will be our lunch stop for the day.

A ride on the Jacobite Steam Train* subject to availability

Your driver-guide will meet you at Fort William train station where you will re-board the bus. We will journey to Pitlochry, which offers the chance to explore its charming Victorian architecture and vibrant local shops set against the backdrop of the picturesque Scottish Highlands. Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the River Tummel or visit the historic Pitlochry Dam and Fish Ladder, providing a glimpse into the town’s unique blend of natural beauty and engineering.

This was a wonderful trip that included a variety of great sights and experiences! Our guide, Stefan, was so kind and considerate! He did everything possible to keep us happy. I especially enjoyed him sharing some lovely, authentic Scottish music on the last leg of our journey. He was knowledgeable and personable. I highly recommend this tour. We loved every minute!

Better experience than I could have hoped for. It was so much fun, so efficient, we did so much in so little time. Stefan was an incredible guide, funny, sweet, attentive, couldn’t have imagined a better tour. Traveling solo, I was a bit nervous but it was pretty much perfect. The train, the views, Skye. We were amazingly lucky with the weather so that probably counts but I feel blessed to have been able to do this in these conditions !

Full Tour Itinerary

Our coach leaves bright and early from Edinburgh heading first over the Firth of Forth then onwards through ancient Fife. We enter Highland Perthshire and make a comfort stop in the Victorian resort of Pitlochry before travelling through the Grampian Mountains to reach the picturesque Cairngorms National Park .

As we tour through Glen Spean look out for Ardverikie House, which recently played the part of Balmoral Castle in the latest series of “The Crown”.

A drive along the scenic “ Road to the Isles ” brings us to the historic fishing port of Mallaig, where there are fantastic views of the Isle of Skye across the Sound of Sleat.

After free time to relax and, maybe enjoy a tasty treat from the famous Fish and Chip shop, it’s time to head to the station to join one of the world’s most incredible railway journeys aboard the Jacobite Steam Train .

The journey starts with superb coastal views as the train puffs its way past the silver sands of Morar to reach Arisaig, sitting by the sheltered shores of Loch nan Ceall.

Further on, we pass the tiny islet of Eilean na Moine, the location of Dumbledore’s final resting place. The small island is surrounded by Loch Eilt, used as the setting for Hagrid’s hut, and for the scene in Deathly Hallows part 1 where Voldemort steals the Elder Wand.

The highlight of the journey is crossing the breathtaking 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct , one of the most iconic images from the Harry Potter films as the train, now forever known as the Hogwarts Express, passes over the viaduct to Hogwarts School.

If time allows, the train might stop on the viaduct, as it did in Prisoner of Azkaban when Harry had his first run-in with a Dementor, allowing us some time to take in the stunning views of beautiful Loch Shiel , one of two lochs that stood in for Hogwarts Lake in the films. It’s where Buckbeak dips his toe in the water in Prisoner of Azkaban, and it’s seen to great effect in a lovely shot at the end of Half-Blood Prince when Hermione and Harry look out towards it from the Astronomy Tower.

The end of the line is Fort William, which sits on the banks of Loch Linnhe and in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain. On our homeward journey, we will see some of the locations used in several of the Harry Potter films.

If time permits there will be a short stop in dramatic Glen Coe , where several scenes from the series were filmed, notably the part in Prisoner of Azkaban where Hermione punches Draco Malfoy.

Further on, we pass the bleak wilderness of Rannoch Moor, we’re at the place where the Death Eaters halted and boarded the train in the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

There will be a short refreshment break in Tyndrum, before making for Stirling and the final part of our magical journey back into Edinburgh.

Customer Reviews Overall Rating:

A long day but enjoyable with regular stops at interesting locations and of course the Jacobite Steam train was the highlight.

This is a long tour if you are coming from Edinburgh so be prepared - have food and water, wear layers because the temps in the train cars can be extreme, do some research on what you will be seeing and be prepared for delays while on the train. We are hoping they will make some changes to the train ride to make it more fun especially for younger Harry Potter fans. If not, this is nothing more than a slow train ride.

Guide was great. We stopped to see hairy coos along the road. Would have been nice for bus to stop or at least slow down while pointing out points of interest so we could try for a picture. Recognize the need for a schedule but adding a few minutes to your tour would be good. Otherwise great tour. I would recommend but only if you really want the train ride. There was a very steep climb they did not warn about before we started. Be sure to let those know other options. Also we were not returned to the starting location. This is a problem in the dark for tourists.
