"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Trevor Anderson is the main protagonist from Journey to the Center of the Earth . He is portrayed by Brendan Fraser. He loves his family and carries the family name Anderson in the first movie. In Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , his nephew  Sean carries the family name Anderson.

He was first seen chasing Max Anderson, Trevor Anderson and Sean Anderson's father, in his caverns. Max wasn't Hannah Asgeirsson's father. A fiery earthquake begins during the chase. Max then falls to his death yelling "TREVOR!". But this was only Trevor's nightmare. He dosen't appear in the rest of the movie until the other chase.

He then gets his fish to attack Trevor, Hannah, and Sean. But they were eaten by a group of Elasmosaurus.

Next, after Hannah drank water, the dinosaur breathed life into his carnivorous plants. Trevor cuts off the head of a carnivorous plant. He then stabbed it. He then said "A large, carnivorous plant?". Then another carnivorous plant almost strangles Hannah to her death. It then roared. It took the staff that Trevor held. He grabed another of those. He punches it, killing it, and its slime was on his left hand. Last, he pulls the last plant's roots, killing it and saving Hannah. The last plant surviving, was killed by Trevor doing backhand. Now the Giganotosaurus was really angry. He rushed into his rocky caverns and waited. Sean then came across a boneyard, heard ghostly noises, and ran. Then he hid behind a rock, and looked around, hoping that whatever it was that was chasing him was gone. And then all of a sudden out of nowhere, something slimey fell down right on his feet. Sean then immediately realized, that it was in fact, right behind him. he looked up, and saw this 80 foot long prehistoric monster!

After drooling on Sean’s face, he then tried to kill Sean, and broke an arch with his massively powerful head. He even trapped Sean in a small crevase. Trevor eventually saves him, and both were heading for the geyser. However, the evil dinosaur still chased them. He then accidentally ran on some muscovite, a type of rock. He then falls into magma.

Then, the lava went higher and hotter, proving that the Albino Giganotosaurus was still alive. Offscreen, he tries to kill Trevor, Sean and Hannah in the lava. But his plan backfired. Trevor blew up the wall and water was going to the lava. The Albino Giganotosaurus was really really mad now. But lava finally destroyed him and hopefully, forever.

Taylor Swift Traveled From Tokyo to Los Angeles for the Super Bowl

Can Swift get to the game if she’s performing in Tokyo the day before? Let’s break it down.

Taylor Swift easily attended all of Travis Kelce’s playoff games, as the singer was on break from her Eras tour. But the Super Bowl, taking place in Las Vegas on February 11, is going to be much harder for her to pull off.

And Swift did indeed make the trip: On Saturday, February 10, TMZ reported that her plane landed in Los Angeles around 4 P.M. local time. It is a short four- to five-hour drive to Las Vegas from the California city.

So how was it possible for her to make Kelce’s Super Bowl after she played a concert on the other side of the world on February 10? We break it down below.

How Swift Can Get From Tokyo to Vegas for the Super Bowl

Time is literally on Swift’s side here. Tokyo is 17 hours ahead of Las Vegas. Swift’s show is about three-and-a-half hours. The show is starting at 6 P.M. there, and Swift has yet to announce an opener, per her website .

If you give Swift a generous estimate and say she finishes by midnight on February 11, that would only be 7 A.M. on February 10 in Vegas. Flight-wise, per The Athletic , it could take her about 10 hours to fly from Tokyo to Vegas; there are 5,548 miles between the cities’ airports.

If we’re generous and say she leaves around 1 A.M. Tokyo time on February 11 (8 A.M. Vegas time on February 10), she would land in Vegas on February 10 with plenty of time to spare. Swift would have to deal with extreme jet lag, but she could easily make it for Super Bowl day to support her partner. ( The Athletic also reports that Swift can even make it if she’s unable to land in Vegas due to overwhelming air traffic and needs to land in Los Angeles and drive to Vegas from there.)

The Super Bowl itself starts at 3:30 P.M. Vegas time.

Has Swift committed to going to the Super Bowl?

Swift hasn’t commented, but ESPN’s Ian Rapoport reported that she will be, based on his sources’ intel. “No doubt, the biggest question heading into this game: if the Chiefs win, will Taylor Swift be at the Super Bowl?” Rapoport said on NFL GameDay, per Daily Mail . “Sources say yes.”

Page Six reported on January 29 that Swift will be attending too. A source explained that in order to make it, Swift will “get on her plane right after the concert” in Tokyo on February 10.

Has Kelce addressed Swift’s plans?

He did a little during a pre-game press conference earlier in the week. He suggested that her coming wasn’t 100 percent finalized. Kelce had been asked whether Swift gave him a Super Bowl pep talk: “No,” he said, via Extra . “ She’s focused on entertaining the crowd… I know she’s out in Japan, Tokyo… so she’s just working on entertaining them, making sure she’s ready for her performances and everything. The Super Bowl [she] will worry about if she can make it.”

The Japanese Embassy commented on her plans on social media.

On Friday, February 2, the Japanese embassy shared its take on Swift’s plans, releasing a statement on social media sprinkled with references to Swift’s albums. Japan seems to love Easter eggs as much as she does.

“The Embassy of Japan in the United States is aware of recent media reports concerning the steps Taylor Swift will need to take to travel from Tokyo after her concert on February 10th to Las Vegas in time to watch the Kansas City Chiefs play in Super Bowl LVIII,” they shared on X, formerly known as Twitter .

“Despite the 12-hour flight and 17-hour time difference, the Embassy can confidently Speak Now to say that if she departs Tokyo in the evening after her concert, she should comfortably arrive in Las Vegas before the Super Bowl begins,” it went on.

“We know that many people in Japan are excited to experience Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, so we wanted to confirm that anyone concerned can be Fearless in knowing that this talented performer can wow Japanese audiences and still make it to Las Vegas to support the Chiefs when they take the field for the Super Bowl wearing Red.”

• Mary is the strong, sensible, joyful backbone of the Sawtelle farm. She is talented at rerouting a conversation or course of action to a better result—at times she is an agitator, at times a peacekeeper. Which events of the book are changed by her intervention?
• John often uses the prompt "Suppose you could do one impossible thing." This phrase becomes his ethos for approaching life's challenges. How does each character interpret it?
• The text Practical Agriculture and Free Will by the fictional thinker George Solomon Drencher turns up regularly in Familiaris , quoted sincerely by John and as a punch line by others. The characters are amused by the book's overblown verbosity, but they do find guidance in its passages. How does the book unify the characters' life stages? Did any Drencherian quotes stand out to you for their strange practicality?
• Throughout the novel, So Jack encourages many characters to have heart-to-heart conversations with Granddaddy. Why? How do characters benefit from these conversations?

Journey of Unwavering Vision, Believing and Belonging

As a young girl, Typhanie Shepherd was enamored with a charismatic lemur named Jovian on the wildlife show Zoboomafoo. Growing up, she continued to feed her curiosity by watching Discovery Channel, Science Channel, and MythBusters, all of which shaped her interest in wildlife and science. She was captivated by the imagery, but the thing she wanted to know most was how were these shows being filmed? How were they getting these incredible shots? 

This curiosity and interest in science and documentaries became embedded in her mind. She wanted to know how they did it – and more than anything, she wanted to do it herself.

Shepherd’s father, a talented technician and artist in his own right, was her greatest advocate toward exploring her interests. “My dad has always pushed me to go forward with my art. He inspired me to continue to create no matter what it was.”

His sage words still resonate with her today: “If you can see it in your head, you can hold it in your hands.”

Throughout her life, her father’s message propelled her to pursue her vision. “If I can envision it, there is a 100% chance that I can obtain it,” she says. “The chances are always low at some point, but they are never zero. My dad is absolutely the reason why I am where I am today.”

With her insatiable curiosity, father’s wisdom, and belief in her vision as a solid foundation, Shepherd went to college to major in filmmaking with an emphasis in documentary film and a minor in sculpture at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Post graduation, she was determined to find the job that she imagined in her mind as a child – harnessing the power of imagery to make films that educate and inspire wonder and curiosity of the natural world. At that time, she was not aware the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service even existed. 

Shepherd spent late nights searching the internet for potential opportunities. She reached out to anyone she could find that worked in the outdoor film industry. In her exploration, she found the name and email address of an audiovisual production specialist for the National Park Service. She took a chance and sent him an email at 2 a.m. 

To Shepherd’s surprise she received a response a few days later, and they coordinated to have a call. In a 15-minute conversation, the production specialist told Shepherd to pursue her passion. He advised her to “create what you want to see in the world.” 

Shepherd already had the creative drive, and this only fueled it. It was all she needed to hear. “A 15-minute conversation completely changed my life,” she says. 

“That moment taught me to continue to persist. If you feel like you are in a rut and you don't know where to go or who to talk to, just keep moving, keep moving forward, keep reaching out, keep networking, because at some point someone’s going to see you and say, ‘All right, yeah, I got 15 minutes.’”

After that conversation, Shepherd launched herself into searching for jobs that fit her vision. She landed on another college’s workforce webpage and found an internship position for filming in the outdoors of western Washington. She saw that they needed a digital media intern and field crew member. This was perfect.

Shepherd landed the job, and it was during this internship when she was introduced to the Service. She served in a 7-month AmeriCorps internship through a partnership with the American Conservation Experience at the Western Washington Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office with the Pacific Region’s Fish and Aquatic Conservation Program. 

In this role, Shepherd floated and filmed fish surveys along the Elwha River with Service and Tribal biologists, she worked with a 4H camp to help stock rainbow and cutthroat trout for outreach fishing opportunities for kids, she filmed fish surveys and tagging on the Dungeness River on the Olympic Peninsula. She also made a short film and interview with Suzena Arias who was interning through the Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences chapter at Washington State University and the Hispanic Access Foundation; this was an incredible piece to highlight internship opportunities and continue bringing great people to the program.

Shepherd also interned with the Portland-Vancouver Urban Refuge Program where she took footage of the accessibility of trails and created outreach materials for Tualatin River, Steigerwald Lake, Wapato Lake, and Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuges to promote more accessible opportunities for visitors. 

Shepherd was living her vision and doing the work that she and others believed she could do – to educate and inspire wonder and curiosity of the natural world through digital media.  

After her internships, Shepherd’s vision continued to manifest. She became a permanent employee with the Pacific Region’s Office of Communications in 2023 as a public affairs specialist and videographer. In the short time she’s been in this role, she’s chased biologists in conducting rapid response genetics work with bull trout along the Yakima River and has looked eye-to-eye with Pacific Lamprey at Abernathy Fish Technology Center. She was also key in creating the “Living the Wild Dream” project to document the incredible career journeys of five employees in the Pacific Region, herself included. 

Shepherd reflects on her first internship with the Fish and Aquatic Conservation Program and shares about Judy Gordon , the inspiration behind the Living the Wild Dream project and the assistant regional director for the program with 40 years of federal service under her belt. Recognizing their effectiveness, Gordon is a strong promoter of the continued internship opportunities in her program such as the one that launched Shepherd into her career.

“Judy is a role model,” says Shepherd. “She is someone I absolutely look up to. And I dream that at some point I can sit down with her and share all the moments that I have experienced working with fisheries with her, and let her know that the work that she does is phenomenal.”

Shepherd says the greatest challenge along her journey was finding the exact role she would fill within the Service. Now that she’s found it, her opportunities to educate through visual storytelling will be boundless.

She is now poised to create the very content that captivated her and so many others as young children, which sparked those first moments of wonder with the natural world. She is producing the visual vehicles to illustrate the species, landscapes, and people behind the Service’s conservation mission. 

For anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation – right out of college or looking for which direction to go, Shepherd’s wisdom and experiences serves as encouragement and an example of what is possible: 

Be persistent : “Through persistence, you can do and become anything you want to be. Keep making. Keep creating.”

The chances are never zero : “If you can see yourself in that position, no matter where you have come from, no matter what your timeline has brought you to – if you can see yourself doing it, there is absolutely a chance.”

You belong : “It doesn't matter who is already in that position. It doesn't matter what they look like, what background they come from. If you feel in your heart of hearts that you belong in that specific position, then you will get there. Don’t question whether or not you belong there. If you’re good at it, you belong there. If you love doing it, you belong there. If you’re passionate about it, you belong there. I take that everywhere I go.”

This is one of five employee stories as a part of the Living the Wild Dream project. This multimedia project was created to share the unique life and career journeys of five Service employees from early career to near retirement, and to elevate the visibility of people of color in conservation, science, and outreach now and for the next generation.

Need to know: what are retail media networks, and why is everybody talking about them, 6 minute read | june 2024.

If you search for a waffle weave blanket on Amazon, summer styles at Target or a dishwasher at Best Buy, there’s a good chance that the first search results you’ll see will be sponsored ads. You might also get a promotional banner at the top of the page and a nicely branded video after a scroll or two. That’s retail media at work: advertising tailored to your shopping mood.

Retail media networks are all about seizing the moment, so let’s jump right in.

What are retail media networks

According to eMarketer , a retail media network is “an asset owned and operated by a retailer that publishes advertisements, or a third-party publisher with ads that leverage a retailer’s first-party shopper data”.

Retailers collect data about your shopping behavior and use it to personalize your experience, including the ads you see. They can use your shopping profile—and anything else they learn about you from your interactions with them—to influence the ads you see (or hear) on social media, CTV and digital radio. And on top of that, retail media networks are able to seamlessly tie impressions to sales on a platform, something that was not widely available before. 

How did retail media start

For most industry observers, the birth of retail media was the release of Amazon’s programmatic advertising solution, Amazon Ads Platform (AAP), in 2012.

Learning from people’s shopping behavior, presenting them with relevant offers and reaching them at the point of purchase wasn’t exactly a new idea. Direct to consumer (DTC) brands, and brands with loyalty programs before them, had long used first-party shopper data to target consumers. And grocery chains and big box retailers have always featured in-store displays and promotions. But the scale and automation offered by Amazon were unprecedented.

From about $600 million that first year to $45 billion in 2023, the rise of Amazon’s ad business has been meteoric—and that was before the launch of its ad-supported Prime Video tier in early 2024. Over time, its success has drawn hundreds of other retailers into the media business. Walmart, Target, Kroger, Instacart, The Home Depot and others are fueling a sector that’s growing at twice the pace of social media (16.3% vs. 8.7% in 2023, according to the IAB ) and is expected to overtake linear TV over the next couple of years.

Why is there so much enthusiasm

Retail media networks are a win-win-win for retailers, brands and consumers.

For large retailers, scale and specialized audiences can represent a whole new revenue stream—with much stronger margins than their core retail business to boot. BCG estimates retail media margins in the 70% to 90% range for onsite ads and 20% to 40% for offsite ads, at a time when inflation, supply-chain issues and other macroeconomic conditions are putting intense pressure on retailers’ standard lines of business.

For brands, retail media networks offer a chance to create audiences based on recent shopping behavior and reach those audiences with finely tuned messages at a time when they’re likely to be more receptive to those messages. Relevant ads to the right people and in the right context is a great combination, especially now that third-party cookies and other legacy identifiers are (slowly) being deprecated. And retail media networks aren’t limited to lower-funnel campaigns either. No wonder 70% of global marketers say retail media networks are more important to their 2024 media plan than the previous year.

Consumers win too because they don’t see ads for snow jackets or cruises to Alaska when they’re shopping for board shorts and snorkeling lessons in Hawaii.

Important media mix considerations

While retail media is undoubtedly an exciting new channel for advertisers, you should only invest in it for the right reasons.

Is the audience worth the higher cost? Can you reach not just existing customers but also attractive new prospects? How does it fit with the rest of your media mix? Do you have consistent reporting to compare performance across other retail networks?

Too many marketers add retail media to their mix out of fear of missing out or out of concern that retailers might retaliate with inferior ‘shelf’ placement if they don’t buy advertising on the platform—something Forrester described as a form of hidden tax. Some advertisers are also under the impression that retail media networks solve the attribution puzzle with their closed-loop measurement because they’re so close to the moment of purchase. But last touch attribution isn’t any more reliable just because it’s on retail media.

Treating retail media like just another channel

With hundreds of options on the market, over two-thirds of ad buyers (69%) are overwhelmed by the complexity of the current retail media buying process. While there are calls for standardization, it’s still largely siloed from other media transactions—to say nothing of the process of reconciling retail media buying with the rest of the media ecosystem. Four in ten ad buyers have only enough bandwidth to work with at most three retail media networks at a time.

In a sign that retail media is maturing, the IAB just proposed new standards in Europe to tear down silos between players and harmonize their offerings. At Nielsen, we think that’s a good first step.

Brands need consistent, transparent, outcomes-minded metrics across all their media partners to get a full picture and build confidence in their overall media spend.

That confidence factor is essential to unlocking real spend. While advertisers are fine to shift some budget because of the measurable sales lift, there’s still uncertainty around the incremental value retail media can provide.  The best thing that can happen to retail media is to be treated as just any other channel. And moving real budgets at scale will require comparability across all measurement metrics. 

Retail media’s emerging opportunities

This is the right time for standards. Online and offline retail media are merging thanks to the rise of digital “smart” shelves, in-store mobile experiences and loyalty programs that connect in-store and online data to build holistic consumer profiles.  And retail media is already growing beyond lower-funnel activities and even retail, for that matter, with market leaders like Lyft , Marriott and Chase showing the way. It’s also crossing over into the CTV space, with trailblazing partnerships between Instacart and Roku, Walmart and Peacock, and of course Amazon and Prime Video.
