How to change your iPhone’s default apps (in iOS 14 and iOS 13)

One of the most long-awaited features that arrived in iOS 14 is the ability to decide for yourself which apps are the default for both email and web browsing. This means that whenever you tap a link or email address, you won’t have to be taken to Safari or Mail, but instead can have your iPhone open Chrome and Spark instead.

In the current official version of iOS, the capability is limited to these two types of app, but hopefully in the future we’ll see calendars, maps and other useful tools move to this method. Indeed we now know that an upcoming update will let you set your choice of default music app too.

But, in the meantime, here’s how to set a different default email and browser app in iOS 14 – and a few words about changing your default music service in the upcoming iOS 14.5 update.

How to change default web browser on iPhone

It’s quite a straightforward process to get your preferred browser app as the go-to on iOS 14. Here’s what you need to do:

• Open Settings and find the app you want to use – in our case Chrome.
• Tap on it and you’ll be presented with a list of settings, one of which is the new Default Browser App option. At the moment it should be showing that Safari is the one selected. To change it you need to the tap on the current option.
• On the next page you will be able to select Chrome from the list.

Now, whenever you click on a link, Chrome will be the app where it opens, rather than Safari.

How to change default email app on iPhone

As you’d expect, the process is pretty much identical when selecting the default app for handling your emails. Again, there is a wide range of options available, so be sure to check out our selection of the best email apps for iPhone and we’re sure you’ll find one that is a step up from the rather basic Mail app offered by Apple.

Here’s how to set the new app as your preferred choice:

• Open the Settings app.
• Tap on the app you want to use as the new default.
• At the bottom of the list of options that appears you should see the Default Mail App setting, which will be set to Mail. Tap this.
• Now select the app you want to use from the list that appears.

That’s all there is to it. Now, when you want to quickly send a message to a friend you can tap on the link and Gmail will open instead of Mail.

How to change default music app on iPhone

Pleasingly, Apple hasn’t sat on its laurels since introducing the default-apps feature in the summer of 2020. The iOS 14.5 point update, which at time of writing is in beta, offers the ability to customise a third type of app: your music service.

The default out of the box is of course Apple’s own Music app, but those who install iOS 14.5 will be able to select Spotify or Pandora instead . This means you’ll be able to tell Siri to play a song, and he/she will know to play the desired song via your preferred service without you having to spell this out.

You’ll need iOS 14.5 or later to access this new option, and for the time being that means installing a beta version . If beta software doesn’t appeal – and it may be buggy – you need only wait until March or thereabouts to get the public version of iOS 14.5 by updating normally.

Problems with default apps

A few issues have been reported since the new default app feature made its debut.

The first was that a bug in iOS 14 meant that whenever an iPhone was rebooted, the defaults would reset back to the Apple variants. Apple patched this in iOS 14.0.1, but even after this some users reported that the default app setting would reset every time the new default app received a software update. For example, if you set Gmail as your default email app and Gmail has a software update, the system will default back to Apple Mail afterwards .

We’ve also noticed that when using Siri to create emails, the digital assistant sometimes ignores our updated preferences and reverts to Mail.

As this is still a relatively new feature, it’s understandable that some things are bound to go wrong, and Apple is generally assiduous about issuing patches for reported bugs. We have a separate article where you can read more about the problems with iOS 14 .

How to change default apps in iOS 13

If you haven’t got an iPhone that’s compatible with iOS 14 or would rather wait a while to see how the battery drain issues many users have experienced pan out, there are some ways to change the defaults in iOS 13, albeit using more hacks than settings. We explain how to do this next.

iOS 13 remains a polished and user-friendly piece of software, with a wide range of well-integrated apps that will do a great job for most people, most of the time. But that doesn’t mean the default iOS 13 experience can’t be improved.

Name almost any preinstalled Apple app, and we could name an alternative by a third-party developer that will be better for some or even most users. Calendar is fine, but Fantastical (which recently, and controversially, switched to a subscription model) is better. Mail is fine, but you’ll get more from Gmail and Spark . Many of us prefer Google Maps to Apple Maps, although the latter has been catching up recently. And Safari has plenty of rivals for the role of iPhone web browser .

The problem, and one reason why many even quite tech-savvy users don’t make the switch, is that Apple’s own apps are set as the default. This means that when you click on a web link, it’ll open in Safari; when you click on a postal address it’ll be shown in Maps. It’s difficult to change this behaviour – Apple runs a tight ship – but in this tutorial we explore the best ways to use alternative apps on your iPhone.

Option 1: Change default apps by jailbreaking

To change the default iOS apps on your iPhone so that your chosen apps are automatically used to open web links, street addresses, calendar invites and so on, you need to jailbreak your iPhone (which we don’t recommend). Even then, it’s not as simple as entering the settings and flicking a few toggles – you need to install specific apps to enable each customisation. Here are three jailbreak apps worth trying. (Hat-tip to Lifewire for the recommendations.)

• BrowserChooser lets you pick a default web browser other than Safari. You’ll find instructions on how to install this app on iPhoneHacks .
• MapsOpener allows you to set Google Maps as your default mapping app, rather than Maps.
• MailClientDefault10 is what you need to change your default email app; Gmail is one obvious choice, but it also supports Inbox, Outlook and Spark. It’s a pretty old app, however, and may not support your version of iOS.

Run a search on Cydia for the name of your chosen third-party app and there’s a good chance you’ll find a solution for jailbroken phones.

As usual, however, we have to warn less experienced iPhone users that Apple does not approve of jailbreaking your device, and that doing so may void your warranties; it also puts you at a higher risk of installing malware, since it enables you to download apps from non-official sources.

Option 2: Change default apps in Settings

Assuming you don’t want to jailbreak your iPhone – and many don’t fancy this – then you cannot make a non-Apple app the default in any of the areas outlined above. Not properly. Nevertheless, some apps’ settings let you do something pretty close.

The most obvious example is your web browser. Let’s say you want Chrome to be default rather than Safari – which isn’t possible without jailbreaking. But while iOS itself won’t let you specify an alternative default browser, some apps will.

If you use Flipboard, tap the profile icon (the righthand icon in the bottom bar) then hit the Settings cog. Tap Browser, then select an alternative. From this app at least, Chrome (or whatever you choose) will now be the default for opening web links.

In Gmail, tap the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) at the top left, scroll down and tap Settings > Default apps. You’ll be able to select the web browser, mapping app and calendar that are used by default from Gmail. The same options can be found in the settings of other Google apps, such as Google Docs, Sheets, Photos and Translate – just look for an option labelled Default Apps.

For each (non-Apple) app you use, and particularly for those which frequently have web links, dates, postal addresses and other elements that would normally lead to an Apple app being launched, check the settings and look for the option to change the defaults.

Option 3: Manually select a different app

After working your way through your app settings, you’ll probably still find some gaps – apps that refuse to let you change the default web browser, for example, and carry on opening all links in Safari.

Even at this point, you may find that you can induce different behaviour by manually selecting a different option each time you click a link. Experiment to find the best approach, but tapping and holding a link instead of tapping and releasing is a good place to start – frequently this will bring up a list of options, which may include Open In, from which you can select a different browser.

Sometimes this is rather awkward. In the iOS Twitter app, for instance, tapping and holding a web link pops up a mini preview of the page; you can then tap the share icon at the bottom, tap More, tap Chrome, and finally hit Open in Chrome. Not really worth the hassle – particularly as Twitter opens links without leaving the app, so it doesn’t make a huge difference which browser is selected.

Similarly, most Apple apps will (for understandable reasons) make you jump through hoops. Press and hold a URL in Notes, say, and the Open function offered is Safari. But you can still select the Share option, and find your way through to Chrome via the circuitous route listed above.

But in other cases it’s more straightforward. In WhatsApp, for example, pressing and holding a web link brings up a menu with Open Link (which is Safari) and Open in Chrome below. That’s not a huge hardship.

What about deleting the original app?

This is, as far as we can tell, a red herring. Yes, Apple does allow you to delete some preinstalled apps (by tapping and holding the icon until it starts wobbling, then tapping the X and confirming). But we haven’t been able to get iOS to then default to an alternative.

We tested this by deleting Maps, then manually writing a postal address in Notes. This was transformed automatically into a tappable link; we tapped it, hoping to be sent to Google Maps. Instead, we were only given the options to ‘Restore “Maps”?’ Or cancel the action.

You could try experimenting with deleting other Apple apps, but we suspect that the same will happen with all of them. In any case, many of the most important Apple apps – including Safari, Photos, Camera and Phone – cannot be deleted at all.

Is it worth changing default apps?

If you’re a jailbreaker – or are willing to become a jailbreaker – then yes. But if you’re not, you have to weigh up the pros and cons. You have to decide if the benefits of using a non-Apple app are enough to outweigh the extra effort.

If you’re a huge fan of Fantastical, say, and think it outclasses Calendar in every way, then it’s probably worth combing through the settings in your other apps and trying to make it the default calendar app where possible. If you just think Chrome is a bit nicer than Safari then it probably isn’t.

For what it’s worth, having weighed up the pros and cons the writer of this article uses almost entirely default iPhone apps rather than the alternatives. The only exception is Google Maps, and even there I just use it from launch; if a web page sends me to Apple Maps then I put up with it because it’s actually not bad. But you’ll have to make this decision for yourself.

Safari uses Google as its default search engine out of the box, but it's not the only option. You can choose other search engines like Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo if you prefer them.

While most modern search engines can find the websites you're looking for, there are often ramifications to consider when making your selection. Google is the big player here, but you might want to select something else depending on your privacy stance. For example, DuckDuckGo pushes itself as a more private search engine, while Bing is integrated with Microsoft Rewards . Making the change in Safari on your iPhone or iPad is super simple, so long as you know where to look.

To get started, open the Settings app and tap "Safari."

Next, under the "Search" heading, tap "Search Engine."

Finally, select the search engine that you would like to use as your default when inside Safari. To select a search engine, tap it. You can choose either Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ecosia , or DuckDuckGo .

Sorry---those are the only options. Apple won't let you choose other search engines as your default. You can still navigate to those search engines in Safari and search them from their website, but that's it. The only way you'll get more options here is if Apple adds them in a future version of the iOS operating system.

There is, however, a caveat to consider here. This setting will only change the default search engine that is used when searching from within Safari. If you use Siri or Spotlight to search, they'll still use Google. It's not ideal, but Google pays a considerable amount of money to Apple every year to make this the situation we have to live with, unfortunately.

• You can change the default web browser on an iPhone running iOS 14, if you want to use a browser other than Safari, such as Google Chrome.
• Once you've set your default browser, links you click will open in that browser's app.
• If you've tried to set your default browser before and it kept reversing, make sure your software is up to date.

Clicking on a link only to have it open in a browser you never use is one of those small annoyances iPhone users have had to just live with. But with iOS 14 , Apple built in an easy way to change your default browser. 

With your preferred web browser set as the default, you won't have to worry about links from texts or emails opening in the wrong one.

Be aware — Apple released software update 14.0.1 to fix a bug that undid this setting, so make sure you have the latest software installed.

How to change the default browser on an iPhone running iOS 14

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Scroll down to find your favorite browser and tap it. It will likely be fairly far down the list, in the section right below "TV Provider."

3. Tap the "Default Browser App" option.

4. A list of any browsers you've installed other than Safari will appear. Tap your preferred browser. A check mark should appear next to it.

Now, any link you click will open in your preferred browser.

How to set a default browser on iOS

Apple supplies its own Safari web browser with every iPhone, but you don’t have to use it to surf the web. There are plenty of third party alternatives on the App Store, and now it’s possible to make such a browser your default browser on iOS.

While Apple has long allowed you to download an alternative web browser for your iPhone, it’s only with iOS 14 in 2020 that you could make one of those your default web browser.

This means that any time you hit a link in an email or on a document, it’s this third party web browser that will open rather than Safari. Here’s how to set a default browser on iOS.

How Default Apps Work on iPhone

The word "default" means two things when it comes to iPhone apps. First, it means apps that come pre-installed on your iPhone when it ships to you from the factory (or when you reset the phone to factory settings ).

In the second case, default apps are apps that are always used to do a certain thing. For example, when you tap a website link in an email, it always opens in Safari . That makes Safari the default web browser on your iPhone. When a website includes a physical address and you tap it to get directions, Apple Maps launches because it is the default mapping app.

Many apps do the same things. Google Maps is ​an alternative app for navigation. Many people use  Spotify rather than Apple Music for music streaming. Others prefer Chrome for web browsing instead of Safari. Anyone can install these apps on their iPhone. But what if you always want to use Google Maps instead of Apple Maps? What if you want links to open in Chrome every time?

How to Change Default iPhone Apps on iOS 14 and Up

It used to be that you couldn't pick default apps on your iPhone, but that changed in iOS 14 . If you're running that version of the iOS, or newer, you can now pick default iPhone apps other than the ones that come with the factory settings.

For now, you can only pick default iPhone apps in a couple of categories: web browser and email. No other categories of app support changing defaults. The options for the default apps are:

If you don't already have the app you want to set as the new default on your iPhone, get it at the App Store .

With that done, tap Settings .

Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings screen and tap the app you want to make the default.

Tap Default Browser App or Default Mail App .

Tap the app you want to set as the default.

Your choice will be automatically saved. Return to using your iPhone the way you want and, whenever you open a link or start a new email, your selection from step 5 will be your new default.

You Can't Change iOS Default Apps on iOS 13 and Earlier

If you're running iOS 13 or earlier and are looking to change your default iPhone apps, it's not possible. You'll need to upgrade to iOS 14 .

In the past, Apple didn't allow people to make certain kinds of customizations. One of the blocked customizations was choosing your default apps.

Apple didn't allow this kind of customization because it wanted to ensure that all iPhone users enjoy a similar experience, with a baseline level of quality and expected behavior.

The other reason that its apps are the default is that doing that brings Apple more users. Consider the Music app. By making it the default music app, Apple has acquired 98 million paying customers for its Apple Music service as of 2021. That's more than $4 billion in annual revenue. If it allowed customers to set Spotify as their default, Apple would likely lose some percentage of those customers.

How to Delete Default Apps on iPhone

Apple's tight control​ over the iPhone and its software will probably never completely go away, but it's getting looser. While it used to be impossible to delete the apps that come with the iPhone, in iOS 10, Apple made it possible to delete some of these apps , including Calculator, Home, Watch, Reminders, Stocks, and more.

The default apps on the iPhone Dock—the row of apps at the bottom of the Home screen—are Phone, Safari, Messages, and Music. Although these four apps ship with on the iPhone Dock, you can switch them out with any other apps. If you feel limited by only four apps, get around this by placing a folder of apps on the Dock in place of one icon.

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard on the iPhone and select a keyboard. If you don't see one you want, install a keyboard app from the App Store. After you select a keyboard, toggle to it by selecting the globe on the keyboard in any app that supports keyboard input.

Privacy-conscious internet users might be doing whatever they can to reduce the amount of data tech companies collect about them. Complete user-tracking prevention is impossible, given the plethora of devices, websites, apps, and services we use online every day. But you can take steps to reduce the data you offer websites. With that in mind, iPhone users should ensure they enable certain Safari settings that can help improve privacy and reduce tracking.

The following tips apply to using Safari on iPhone, but the same settings are available on the iPad version of the browser. Similarly, the macOS variant of Safari will include similar privacy precautions.

Change the default Safari search engine on iPhone

Since Google is one of the main tech companies tracking you online, one way to avoid Google is to stay away from its main product. That’s Google Search, which happens to be the default search engine in Safari on the iPhone. That’s where your Safari privacy quest should start. You should change Google Search for something more privacy friendly, like DuckDuckGo .

Tell sites to stop tracking your iPhone

It’s not enough to change search engines in Safari. You should also ask websites not to track your iPhone. To do that, head to the Settings app and look for the Safari menu. You’ll want to enable the Prevent Cross-Site Tracking option.

Block cookies in Safari

While in the menu above, you might also want to enable the Block All Cookies option. That’s how advertising firms keep track of users. Blocking cookies might impact some site functionality, however.

Finally, the menu above also lets you block the Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement if you want further peace of mind.

Hide your IP address

Your quest to improve privacy while browsing the web with Safari on iPhone isn’t done. There are a few key settings that you can still tweak. Like hiding your IP address.

Block location access

Location. Location. Location. That’s a critical privacy aspect when it comes to your iPhone experience. That includes apps and internet browsing via Safari.

You can set it to Deny if you don’t need location-related internet services. The Ask option will force websites to ask whenever they want to track your location. You might have certain favorites that you want to allow to track your location.

Bonus: Browse the web on iPhone in Safari’s private mode

You can use a combination of the features above, or all of them, to improve your internet privacy on iPhone. You can also enable the Share Across Devices option if you own multiple Apple devices, so the same settings apply to various iPhones and iPads.

This isn’t a setting, so you’ll have to open the Safari app. Look for the tabs symbol in the lower right corner and tap it.

The downside is that the sites you browse in private mode won’t remain in your history. You’ll have to balance between Private mode and regular mode depending on which websites you use.

If it’s dark, you’re in Private mode.

How to Change Default Search Engine in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

The Safari browser is the default app to browse the web on Apple devices. To improve your browsing experience, you can create Tab Groups in Safari of your most visited websites to quickly access them when needed. By default, Safari uses Google as the default search engine.

But there are still a lot of users who prefer using a search engine other than Google Search. So if you want to change the default search engine in Safari, here’s how to do it on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Before you begin, ensure that your iPhone, iPad, or Mac run the latest version of the respective operating systems.

Change Default Search Engine in Safari on iPhone and iPad

There’s the option of opening the search engine’s website in a separate tab and using it to browse the web. However, changing the default search engine in Safari is way more convenient. If you prefer using Safari from your iPhone or iPad, here’s how to change the default search engine. The steps remain the same for both platforms.

Step 1:  Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

Step 2:  Scroll down and tap on Safari.

Step 3:  Scroll down and select Search Engine.

Step 4:  Select your preferred search engine from the list of options.

After you select your preferred search engine, you can scroll down and change settings like opening links in a new tab, Search Engine Suggestions, or more. You can repeat the same steps to change your default search engine in Safari on your iPhone and iPad.

Change the Default Search Engine in Safari on Mac

You can use a different search engine to download and install a different web browser like Microsoft Edge or Firefox. But if your Mac is running low on storage, you don’t need to download a separate web browser to change your search engine. But one of the other main reasons behind changing the default search engine is the browser hijacking code or extensions.

The Safari browser on your Mac lets you change the default search engine and use it for internet browsing. Here are the steps.

Step 1:  Press Command + Spacebar keyboard shortcut to open Spotlight Search, type Safari,  and press Return.

Step 2:  Click on Safari at the top-left corner.

Step 3:  Select Settings from the list of options.

Step 4:  Click the Search tab in the Settings window.

Step 5:  Select the drop-down next to Search Engine.

Step 6:  Select the new search engine of your choice for use in Safari.

You can repeat the same steps to change your default search engine once again in Safari on your Mac.

How to Change Homepage to Search Engine in Safari on Mac

In addition to changing the default search engine, you can change the default homepage to open with the search engine in Safari. The homepage loads up when you don’t have any specific website tabs opened in Safari. So you can set the web page of your default search engine as the homepage in Safari. Here’s how:

Step 4:  Select the General tab in the Settings window.

Step 5:  Type the web page link of the search engine you plan to use in the Homepage box.

If you opened the search engine web page in Safari, you can click on Set To Current Page.

After you close the tab, Safari will always open your selected search engine’s web page whenever you open a new tab on your Mac.

You can change this setting by clicking the dropdown menu next to ‘New Windows Open With’ and ‘New Tabs Open With.’

Use a New Search Engine

Using a new search engine as your default is very easy on Safari. You can choose from a list of options available on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. How to Change the Default Browser on iPhone to Chrome or Back to Safari

When you tap on a website link on your iPhone or iPad, the site will open in whichever browser you have set as default. The default default browser is, of course, Safari. You may prefer Chrome, Firefox or another browser.

If you don’t like Safari or you have previously changed your default browser and now want to change it back to Safari, it is pretty simple to change it. Once you choose a new default browser, whenever you tap on a weblink in Messages, Mail or another app, the link will open in your default browser. Note some apps will open a link in the app’s own browser(like) window .

In this article, we’ll tell you how to change the default browser on your iPhone or iPad. The choice of default browser will only affect opening website links from other apps. You can always open and use any of your browser apps, no matter which browser app is the default.

How to change the default browser to Chrome (or another browser)

If your iPhone’s default browser is Safari (or anything other than what you want it to be), you can easily change it to Chrome (or your browser of choice).

• If you haven’t already, download Chrome from the App Store .
• Open Settings on your iPhone.
• Scroll down and find Chrome (or your preferred browser) in the list of apps, then tap on it.
• Tap on Default Browser App .
• Tap on Chrome to select it.

How to change the default browser back to Safari

If you have changed your default browser to something other than Safari, then anytime you tap on a weblink, it will open in that browser. To go back to using Safari, you can reset Safari as your default browser on your iPhone.

• Scroll down and find Safari in the list of apps and tap on it.
• Tap on Safari to select it.

Safari's Reader mode is improved in iOS 18, even without Apple Intelligence

The new Reader options on iPhone

Apple has announced that Safari 's Reader mode, where all website distractions are removed so that you can read articles more easily, will be getting two specific updates. They are an automatic summary of an article, and also a contents page for longer ones — both done by Apple Intelligence.

There is no Apple Intelligence in the first developer beta of any of Apple's OSes, but Safari's Reader mode has been improved. While AppleInsider will revisit Reader after Apple Intelligence arrives, there are already new benefits to the feature including quicker access to options.

What Reader does in Safari

On a website that chiefly has articles or text on it, you can turn on Safari's Reader mode. This switches to a view of the web page that aimed to provide solely the text and images, no ads or videos, no pop-ups, and so on.

What hasn't changed, and can't, is that this is Safari's best attempt at cutting out distractions for you. Depending on the site, it may fail to work at all, for instance.

Or commonly it will show what appears to be a complete website page, but the site has really split its article up over many more pages.

The Apple Intelligence summary and contents page is going to be an attempt to address some of these issues.

But for now, Apple has made going into Reader mode quicker, and made it easier to customize what you see when you're in it.

What's new in Reader on macOS Sequoia

• Browse to a website in Safari
• Click the new icon to the left in the address bar
• Click on Show Reader from the short pop-up menu

That short menu also includes the ability to change the zoom percentage on text, and to alter some website settings. It's also got the option tofind items on the page, though it's not clear why this is Find where the same function on iPhone and iPad is Search .

Once you've chosen Show Reader , you can click again on that new icon in the address bar. This now gives you a longer drop-down that adds font and page color options.

What's new in Reader on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

• In Safari for iPhone or iPad, go to any primarily text-based website
• Tap the new icon in the address bar
• Choose Show Reader
• Tap the same address bar icon again
• Use Reader's new controls for font, size, color
• Or use Search within Reader

The font option is a further drop-down list on iPad and iPhone, while as with the Mac , the choice of color is a series of four buttons. There's white, sepia, gray, and black, and tapping on any of those changes the whole look of the page.

Also in this dropdown, there is now a Listen to Page option. Tap that to hear Siri read out all of the text.

Reader search and settings

Search and font size controls are now buttons in the top row of the drop-down menu on the iPhone and iPad. There's also an ellipses icon in that row, which gets you many more options.

Most of those are to do with Safari features, such as adding to favorites. But if you scroll toward the bottom, there is also an option called Use Reader Automatically .

If there is a site that you are forever turning to Reader mode to escape an ad barrage, turn this on. Whenever you visit this site, it will solely show you articles in Reader mode.

Note, though, that it does this with articles. You'll still see the normal view of a page like a news site's headlines one.

The last option that is always available, is Hide Reader . This turns off the feature and returns you to the original view of the site.

There is one more thing, which is only on the iPhone. It's called Manage Extensions, and will allow you to turn on or off an Safari extensions you have installed.

Those could include ad blockers, for instance, which might make a page more readable without going into Reader mode.

All of this sounds like a brute-force way to stop websites being paid by advertisers. When the site is so overloaded with pop-ups that it's hard to read, though, this will help.

It should also help with screen-readers for visually impaired readers.

Plus the forthcoming Apple Intelligence features like summarizing the page will mean you can determine quicker whether this is a site you want to read.

I live in beautiful rainy Scotland and hadn’t received a rain notification from the Weather app in over a year. I had presumed the setting was turned on by default and that it couldn’t keep up with Scotland’s intermittent rain starting and stopping every two minutes. Either that or the feature itself was just useless across the globe. Turns out you might think it’s on but it could be disabled. Here’s how to turn it on:

• Open Weather
• Tap the menu button in the bottom right corner 
• Tap the three dots in the top right corner
• Select Notifications
• Toggle on Next-Hour Precipitation for Current Location

Underneath these settings, you can also enable Next-Hour Precipitation for any of your saved locations. Additionally, there’s a Severe Weather warning alert option that will make sure to notify you if a storm is brewing.

I loved Dark Sky and had thought Apple had just messed up one of the app’s best features. Instead, it turns out that you need to make sure it’s enabled correctly to get the benefit of knowing when rain is coming, even when you’ve yet to feel a drop of water. For somewhere like Scotland this feature is a life-saver considering you can leave the house in sunglasses and a t-shirt in the summer heat only to be hit with torrential rain before you get to the end of your street.

• Go through the items you'd like to delete, like your Browsing History, Cookies and Site Data, Cached Images and Files, Saved Passwords , and Autofill Data.

Clearing the browsing and cache data in Google Chrome doesn't close all open tabs, but it will refresh each tab and log you out of websites. Once you tap on one of the tabs you want to access, you'll have to log back in.

How do I Reset Safari to Defaults on iOS? I’m not talking about clearing web data and cache. I mean if I changed Experimental Features how do I make sure those and all other settings are back to default?

The last year has been a great one for WebKit. After unveiling Safari 17 beta at WWDC23, we’ve shipped six releases of Safari 17.x with a total of 200 new web technologies. And we’ve been hard at work on multiple architectural improvement projects that strengthen WebKit for the long-term.

Now, we are pleased to announce WebKit for Safari 18 beta. It adds another 48 web platform features, as well as 18 deprecations and 174 bug fixes. Test it today on iOS 18 beta, iPadOS 18 beta, visionOS 2 beta, and macOS Sequoia beta.

Safari 18 for visionOS 2 beta adds support for immersive WebXR . Now you can create fully immersive experiences and deliver them on the web to people using Apple Vision Pro . Safari on visionOS 2 beta supports immersive-vr sessions. WebXR scenes are displayed using hardware-accelerated graphics driven by WebGL .

Safari for visionOS 2 beta supports the new WebXR transient-pointer input mode. It lets you make the most of natural input on visionOS, and allow your users to interact with a look and a pinch.

If you want to animate a 3D model of the user’s hands, Safari for visionOS 2 beta also includes support for WebXR hand tracking . To ensure privacy, permission to allow hand tracking will be requested from users at the start of their WebXR session.

View Transitions

WebKit added support for the View Transitions API in Safari 18 beta. It provides an optimized browser API to animate elements from one state to another. Safari supports the CSS View Transitions Module Level 1 specification that adds new CSS properties and pseudo-elements for defining transition animations, along with a new browser API to start transition animations and react to different transition states. It works by capturing the current (old) state of the page and applying an animated transition to the new state. By default, the browser applies a cross-fade between the states.

Call the document.startViewTransition() method to initiate the capture. You can pass a callback function as the first argument to make DOM state changes between the old and new captures. The method returns a ViewTransition object which contains promises that can be used to track when the view transition starts or ends.

Once the states are captured, a pseudo-element tree is built which can be targeted with CSS, allowing you to modify the CSS animations used for the transitions. The animations out of the old page state and into the new page state can be modified via the ::view-transition-new(*) and ::view-transition-old(*) selectors. You can also ask the browser to independently track state changes for a specific element by naming it with the CSS view-transition-name property. You can then use the pseudo-element to customize animations for it.

The example below demonstrates state management with tabbed navigation. Each tab view has a custom transition animation out and a subtly different animation in, while the tabs themselves rely on the default page transition.

Style Queries

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for Style Queries when testing CSS Custom Properties. Similar to how developers can use Sass mixins, Style Queries can be used to define a set of reusable styles that get applied as a group.

Here, if the --background custom property is set to black, then certain styles will be applied — in this case to make the headline and paragraph text color white.

Don’t forget to pay attention the HTML structure. By default, Style Queries reference the styles on the direct parent element. You can create a different reference through the use of Container Query names.

currentcolor and system color keywords in Relative Color Syntax

Support for Relative Color Syntax shipped in Safari 16.4 . It lets you define colors in a more dynamic fashion, creating a new color from an existing color. The value lch(from var(--color) calc(L / 2) C H) for instance uses the lch color space to take the variable --color and calculate a new color that’s half its lightness, calc(L / 2) .

Now, starting in WebKit for Safari 18 beta, you can reference the currentcolor or a system color keyword as you define the new color. For example, this code will set the background color to be the same color as the text color, only 4 times lighter, as calculated in the oklch color space.

Being able to reference system color keywords opens up another world of options. System colors are like variables that represent the default colors established by the OS, browser, or user — defaults that change depending on whether the system is set to light mode, dark mode, high contrast mode, etc. For example, canvas represents the current default background color of the HTML page, while fieldtext matches the color of text inside form fields. Relative Color Syntax lets you define dynamic connections between colors in your CSS, lessening the need to control color through variables in a tightly-regimented design system. Learn more about Relative Color Syntax by watching this portion of What’s new in CSS from WWDC23.

Animating display

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for transition animation of the display property.

Many developers are excited to use @starting-style along with transition-behavior and display: none interpolation. WebKit for Safari 17.4 added general support for transition-behavior , including transition-behavior: allow-discrete . WebKit for Safari 17.5 added support for @starting-style , letting you define starting values for transitioning an element as it’s created (or re-created). Now in WebKit for Safari 18 beta, you can use these features together to transition the display property.

Shaping interaction regions on visionOS

As a web developer, you’re very familiar with how link styling works on the web. For decades you’ve been able to use CSS to style text-decoration , color and more for :link , :hover , :active , and :visited states. You’ve also been able to adjust the size of the invisible tap target through use of padding.

Apple Vision Pro adds a new dimension to how links work — tap targets are visible on visionOS. Anytime a user looks at an interactive element, it’s highlighted to let them know that it can be tapped. And you as a designer or developer can intentionally design how an interaction region looks. You may want to add padding, for instance, or even a rounded corner to the otherwise invisible box.

Now in Safari in visionOS 2 beta, when you use CSS clip-path to change the shape of tappable area of a link, the visible interaction region will change shape as well. Interactive UI elements built with SVG will also be highlighted with the proper shape. Learn more by watching Optimize for the spatial web at WWDC24, available Tuesday June 11.

Backdrop Filter

Originally shipped in Safari 9.0, backdrop filter provides a way to apply graphics effects to the content behind a particular element. You can apply backdrop-filter to a headline, for example, and everything behind the headline will be blurred, or have decreased saturation, or increased contrast. Any of the filter functions from SVG can be used — blur() , brightness() , contrast() , drop-shadow() , grayscale() , hue-rotate() , invert() , opacity() , saturate() , and sepia() .

For many years, backdrop filter only worked in Safari. It was available when you prefixed the property with -webkit-backdrop-filter . Now, starting in Safari 18 beta, you don’t need the prefix. We also improved our implementation, fixing bugs and boosting interoperability.

This demo shows eight different filters and what you might do with each one alone. You can, of course, combine filters to create even more interesting results. With backdrop filter supported in Safari since 2015, Edge since 2018, Chrome since 2019, Samsung Internet since 2020, and Firefox since 2022, this is a great time to consider the kind of graphic design possibilities it enables.

safe in Flexbox

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the safe keyword for alignment in Flexbox. This provides a mechanism for refining how flex items overflow. Let’s look at an example of a simple navigation menu — a classic use of Flexbox.

The following CSS creates a simple layout that wraps when there’s not enough space on one line for the menu, while centering the items in the available space.

By default, justify-content: center will always keep the items centered, even when the content is overflowing the containing box. You might prefer, however, that the content not be centered when it overflows — being centered cuts off both the beginning and end of the word, making the content harder to understand when the overflow is not visible.

The safe keyword lets you change how alignment works when content overflows. The justify-content: safe center rule will instead start align any item that is overflowing, while continuing to center the items that are not overflowing.

If you want to override the safe keyword, you can use unsafe . The justify-content: unsafe center rule will do the same thing as justify-content: center . The unsafe keyword has been supported in WebKit for Safari for quite some time.

Content visibility

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for content-visibility . This property controls whether or not an element renders its contents in a fashion that’s useful for making performance optimizations. It lets you communicate to the browser that certain portions of the page will likely be initially offscreen, and suggest they be omitted from layout and rendering. This can make the page load faster.

Last year , we added support for web apps in macOS Sonoma. You can add any website to your dock — whether or not it was built with a Manifest file, Service Worker, or other technology to customize the web app experience. Go to the site in Safari, then File > Add to Dock… where you can customize the icon, change the name, and even clean up the URL. Then, just click on the web app icon in your Dock, and it will open as an app.

This year brings two improvements to web apps on Mac.

Opening links

macOS Sequoia beta adds support for opening links directly in web apps. Now, when a user clicks a link, if it matches the scope of a web app that the user has added to their Dock, that link will open in the web app instead of their default web browser.

For example, imagine you have added MDN Web Docs to the Dock. Then a colleague sends you a link to an MDN page in Messages, Mail, Slack, Discord, IRC, or any non-browser application on your Mac. Now when you click on that link, it will open in the MDN Web Docs web app instead of your default browser.

Clicking a link within a browser will maintain the current behavior. This feature only affects links opened elsewhere. (When a user is in Safari, clicking on a link that matches the scope of a web app that is added to Dock, they will see an “Open in web app” banner, unless they have previously dismissed the banner.)

By default, this behavior applies when the link matches the host of the web page used to create the web app. As a developer, you can refine this experience by defining the range of URLs that should open in the web app with the scope member in the web app manifest .

Extension support

Now you can personalize web apps on Mac with Safari Web Extensions and Content Blockers. Navigate to the web app’s Settings menu to access all your installed Content Blockers and Web Extensions. Any enabled in Safari will be on by default in the web app. Each web app is uniquely customizable, just like Safari profiles.

Safari 18 beta also adds support for Mobile Device Management of extension enabled state, private browsing state, and website access on managed devices. This means schools and businesses that manage iOS, iPadOS, or macOS devices can now include the configuration of Safari App Extensions, Content Blockers, and Web Extensions in their management.

One of the amazing experiences you can have on Apple Vision Pro is looking at spatial photos and panoramas. When you open the Photos app in visionOS, you see a montage of your photos. Tap an image, it appears alone in a floating frame in front of you, while the rest of the app disappears.

A spatial photo appears at just the right height and viewing angle to make it feel like you’ve gone back to a moment in time. A second tap of the UI breaks it out of the frame, as it grows and becomes even more immersive. Similarly, a panorama floats in a frame on first tap. Then on second tap of the UI, it expands to wrap all around you, creating a fully immersive experience.

Now in Safari 18 for visionOS 2 beta, you can use the Fullscreen API to create the same experience on the web. You can embed the photo in a web page, and provide the ability to tap. The photo will pop into a floating frame as the Safari window disappears. Then when the user taps on the spatial photo or panorama UI that visionOS provides, the photo will further expand to create a fully immersive experience. When they exit the image, the Safari window will return.

Let’s walk through how to support experiencing a spatial photo or panorama on the web using Fullscreen API. First, include the image on your web page using any of the techniques we’ve used on the web for years. Here, we can embed a flattened panoramic photo into the web page using simple HTML.

Then using JavaScript, we’ll trigger .requestFullscreen() on tap. Perhaps like this.

You could, of course, create your own UI for the user to tap, rather than making the entire photo the tap target.

Spatial images work just the same, although it’s likely we want to provide fallbacks for browsers that do not support HEIC files . We can do so with the picture element.

Spatial images are stereoscopic, with both a left and right channel. In Safari, when the image is embedded in the web page, the browser will show the left channel. And there’s no need to worry about providing a fallback of any sort for Safari on macOS, iOS, or iPadOS — the stereoscopic HEIC file works great.

Writing Suggestions

At last year’s WWDC, Apple unveiled inline predictive text on iOS, iPadOS, macOS and more. It helps users input text faster by predicting what they might be typing and finishing the word, phrase or even a whole sentence when the user taps the space bar. Now, WebKit for Safari 18 beta on iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma brings inline predictive text to the web.

While inline predictive text makes for a fantastic, personalized user experience, there might be specific situations on the web where it’s better to not have predictions. WebKit for Safari 18 beta on iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma gives web developers the opportunity to disable inline predictions through the writingsuggestions attribute. By default, writing suggestions is set to true. You can turn off the capability by including the writingsuggestions="false" attribute on any type of text input field.

WebKit for Safari on iOS 18 beta adds haptic feedback for <input type=checkbox switch> . This means, now when a user taps a switch control on iPhone, a single tap is felt — just like how toggling a switch feels in Settings app on iOS. Try this demo to see what it’s like.

Date and time inputs

WebKit for Safari 18 beta on macOS improves accessibility support for date and time input field types. Now <input type="date"> , <input type="datetime-local"> , and <input type="time"> elements work properly with VoiceOver.

Usually elements have the labels they need, but sometimes there is no text label for a particular button or UI. In this situation, ARIA can be used to provide an accessible label. The aria-label attribute provides names of labels while aria-roledescription provides the description for the role of an element.

On very rare occasions, you may need to override aria-label or aria-roledescription to provide different names or descriptions specifically for braille. The aria-braillelabel and aria-brailleroledescription attributes provide such an ability. They exist to solve very specific needs, including educational contexts where the site needs to render the specific braille table dot pattern. If you do use braille-related ARIA attributes, be sure to test them using a braille reader. If in doubt, relying on the accessible name from content or aria-label / aria-roledescription is almost always the better user experience . WebKit has supported these ARIA attributes for years.

Now, WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the ariaBrailleLabel and ariaBrailleRoleDescription element reflection properties. These make it possible to get and set the aria-braillelabel and aria-brailleroledescription ARIA attributes on DOM elements directly via JavaScript APIs, rather than by using setAttribute and getAttribute .

When you play in Viewer, the video fills the Safari window, while providing full access to system playback controls. Then it automatically enters picture-in-picture anytime you switch tabs, close the window, or occlude the web page with another window. Look for Video Viewer in the new page menu in Safari whenever you are on a web page with a prominent video element.

Managed Media Source

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds Workers support for both Managed Media Source (MMS) and Media Source Extensions ( MSE ). This can be especially helpful on complex websites that want to ensure continuous and smooth video playback even when other site activity (such as live commenting) causes a very busy main thread. WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the WebRTC HEVC RFC 7789 RTP Payload Format. Previously, the WebRTC HEVC used generic packetization instead of RFC 7789 packetization. This payload format provides a new option for improving videoconferencing, video streaming, and delivering high-bitrate movies and TV shows.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for MediaStreamTrack processing in a dedicated worker. And it adds support for missing WebRTC stats.

Two years ago at WWDC22, we announced support for passkeys — a groundbreaking industry-standard way to login to websites and app services. Passkeys provide people with an extremely easy user experience, while delivering a profound increase in security. To learn more, watch Meet Passkeys or read Supporting passkeys .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for three new features as we continue to improve passkeys. First, Safari 18 beta adds support for using mediation=conditional for web authentication credential creation. This allows websites to automatically upgrade existing password-based accounts to use passkeys. Learn more by watching Streamline sign-in with passkey upgrades and credential managers at WWDC24, available on Tuesday, June 11.

Second, WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for using passkeys across related origins. This lets websites use the same passkey across a limited number of domains which share a credential backend.

And third, WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the WebAuthn prf extension. It allows for retrieving a symmetric key from a passkey to use for the encryption of user data.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for secure HTTPS for all images, video, and audio by upgrading passive subresource requests in mixed content settings. This means that if some files for a website are served using HTTPS and some are served using HTTP (known as “mixed content”), all images and media will now be auto-upgraded to HTTPS, in adherence with Mixed Content Level 2 .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for Unicode 15.1.0 characters in RegExp. Unicode 15.1 added 627 characters, bringing the total of characters to 149,813. Now, these new characters can be used in regular expressions.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta also adds support for the v flag with RegExp.prototype[Symbol.matchAll] . providing more powerful ways to match Unicode characters, as specified in the ECMAScript 2024 standard.

For example, you can now specify to only match on Latin characters, while avoiding matching on Cyrillic script characters.

Or split a string matching on Emojis.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for URL.parse() , a way to parse URLs which returns null rather than an exception when parsing fails.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta expands Declarative Shadow tree support by adding the shadowRootDelegatesFocus and shadowRootClonable IDL attributes to the <template> element. It also adds the shadowRootSerializable attribute and shadowRootSerializable IDL attribute to the <template> element, enabling those using Declarative Shadow roots to opt into making them serializable. Serializing can be done through the new getHTML() method that has been added at the same time.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for PopStateEvent ’s hasUAVisualTransition , indicating whether the user agent has a visual transition in place for the fragment navigation.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for subresource integrity in imported module scripts, which gives cryptographic assurances about the integrity of contents of externally-hosted module scripts.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the bytes() method to the Request, Response , Blob , and PushMessageData objects. This replaces the need for web developers to call arrayBuffer() , which can be difficult to use, and wraps the result in a Uint8Array . Calling bytes() is now the recommended way going forward when you need to access the underlying bytes of the data these objects represent.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for feature detecting text fragments by exposing document.fragmentDirective . Note that the returned object (a FragmentDirective ) doesn’t provide any functionality, but it’s helpful if you need to know if Fragment Directives are supported by the browser.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the willReadFrequently context attribute for the getContext() method. It indicates whether or not a lot of read-back operations are planned. It forces the use of a software accelerated 2D or offscreen canvas, instead of hardware accelerated. This can improve performance when calling getImageData() frequently.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta extends 2D canvas support for currentcolor . It can now be used inside color-mix() or Relative Color Syntax. Here currentcolor will default to the computed color property value on the canvas element.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for six new WebGL extensions:

• EXT_texture_mirror_clamp_to_edge
• WEBGL_render_shared_exponent
• WEBGL_stencil_texturing
• EXT_render_snorm
• OES_sample_variables
• OES_shader_multisample_interpolation

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for fuzzy search code completion in the Web Inspector’s CSS source editor.

WebKit for iOS 18 beta, iPadOS 18 beta, visionOS 2 beta, and macOS Sequoia beta adds support for two new API — the Writing Tools API and an API to control adaptive image glyph insertion. WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for Apple Pay funds transfer.

While it’s rare to deprecate older technology from the web, there are occasions when it makes sense. We’ve been busy removing -webkit prefixed properties that were never standardized, aging media formats that were never supported in other browsers, and more. This helps align browser engines, improve interoperability, and prevent compatibility problems by reducing the possibility that a website depends on something that’s not a web standard.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for OffscreenCanvasRenderingContext2D ’s commit() method.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta deprecates support for a number of rarely used -webkit prefixed CSS pseudo-classes and properties — and even one -khtml prefixed property.

• :-webkit-animating-full-screen-transition pseudo-class
• :-webkit-full-screen-ancestor pseudo-class
• :-webkit-full-screen-controls-hidden pseudo-class

WebKit for Safari 18 beta also deprecates support for the resize: auto rule. Support for the resize property remains, just as it’s been since Safari 4. The values Safari continues to support include : none , both , horizontal , vertical , block , inline , plus the global values. Early versions of CSS Basic User Interface Module Level 3 defined auto , but it was later written out of the web standard.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta also deprecates support for non-standardize WEBKIT_KEYFRAMES_RULE and WEBKIT_KEYFRAME_RULE API in CSSRule .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for the JPEG2000 image format. Safari was the only browser to ever provide support.

If you’ve been serving JPEG2000 files using best practices, then your site is using the picture element to offer multiple file format options to every browser. Safari 18 beta will simply no longer choose JPEG2000, and instead use a file compressed in JPEG XL, AVIF, WebP, HEIC, JPG/JPEG, PNG, or Gif — choosing the file that’s best for each user. Only one image will be downloaded when you use <picture> , and the browser does all the heavy lifting.

We have noticed that some Content Deliver Networks (CDN) use User Agent sniffing to provide one file to each UA, offering only JPEG2000 images to Safari — especially on iPhone and iPad. If you expect this might be happening with your site, we recommend testing in Safari 18 beta on both macOS Sequoia and iOS or iPadOS 18. If you see problems, contact your SaaS provider or change your image delivery settings to ensure your website provides fallback images using industry best practices.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for non-standard VTTRegion.prototype.track .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes the last bits of support for AppCache.

When AppCache first appeared in 2009, in Safari 4, it held a lot of promise as a tool for caching web pages for use offline. It was imagined as “HTML5 Application Cache” back when HTML itself was being further expanded to handle more use cases for web applications. A developer could create a simple cache manifest file with a list of files to be cached. Its simplicity looked elegant, but there was no mechanism for cache busting, and that made both developing a site and evolving the site over time quite frustrating. AppCache also had security challenges. So new web standards were created to replace it. Today, developers use Service Workers and Cache Storage instead.

WebKit deprecated AppCache with a warning to the Console in Safari 11.0. Then in 2021, we removed support for AppCache from Safari 15.0, with a few exceptions for third-party users of WKWebView . Now we are removing those exceptions. This change to WebKit will only affect the rare web content loaded in older third-party apps that have JavaScript code which relies on the existence of AppCache related interfaces.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes the SVGAnimateColorElement interface.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for four non-standard Web APIs:

• KeyboardEvent.altGraphKey
• AES-CFB support from WebCrypto
• KeyboardEvent.prototype.keyLocation
• HashChangeEvent ’s non-standard initHashChangeEvent() method

When you view a webpage or image that’s in another language, you can use Safari to translate the text (not available in all languages or regions).

Add Safari back to your Home Screen

If you don’t see Safari on your Home Screen, you can find it in App Library and add it back.

On the Home Screen, swipe left until you see the App Library.

Ipad power user tip: hide the floating keyboard row so it won’t hide your content.

When using an iPad with an external keyboard attached , iPadOS places a floating keyboard row at the bottom of your screen. Apple calls this the Shortcuts bar .

The problem with the Shortcuts bar is that it often gets in the way of other important content on screen—especially when multitasking in multiple apps.

Here’s how you can hide the Shortcuts bar and improve your iPad experience.

The problem: tab bars and content obscured

The Shortcuts bar can dynamically change sizes based on the controls available in the app you’re using. By default, it always includes sizable space in the middle for typing suggestions. If you’re like me, you never use these suggestions on the iPad, because having a physical keyboard attached makes them infinitely less useful than they are on an iPhone.

Next to those suggestions, you might find buttons for changing keyboard settings, using rich text formatting, or some other control—again, it depends on your current app and the shortcuts it makes available.

The problem is, a barebones Shortcuts bar with no additional controls offers little utility to iPad users, while a more feature-rich Shortcuts bar grows large enough that it often hides important content on screen—and especially an app’s tab bar options.

Examples from my daily work

For example, I will often be writing in Ulysses , then pull Slack, Files, or Photos into view using Slide Over. I also regularly use Ulysses next to Safari in Split View. In all of these scenarios, the “smaller” app on screen always puts important controls at the bottom of the screen, typically in a tab bar.

Slack’s tab bar lets me switch between Home, DMs, and Activity. But the Home tab is highly obscured by the keyboard Shortcuts bar. The same is true for Files’ Recents tab—the Shortcuts bar makes it very difficult to see, much less tap, the Recents tab.

Split View and Slide Over are power user features, and they are made more frustrating when the Shortcuts bar is involved.

The solution: hide the Shortcuts bar

Which is why I highly recommend hiding that bar. Here’s how.

There are two methods for hiding the Shortcuts bar.

• You can tap the keyboard icon in the bar, then select ‘Minimize’
• Or you can simply grab the bar and drag it into either the bottom-left or bottom-right corner of the screen.

Whichever way you do it, the Shortcuts bar becomes a small floating island that stays in the corner, largely out of the way.

You can always tap on the bar to bring it back, but otherwise it will just sit idly, doing no harm to your multitasking experience.

The Mac experience gets better than ever with iPhone Mirroring, big updates to Safari, highly anticipated games, and Apple Intelligence to deliver all-new capabilities

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today previewed macOS Sequoia , the next version of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, bringing entirely new ways of working and transformative intelligence features to Mac. macOS Sequoia is full of exciting new capabilities, including iPhone Mirroring, which expands Continuity by enabling full access to and control of iPhone directly from macOS. Safari gets another big update with the new Highlights feature for effortless information discovery on webpages while browsing. The new Passwords app makes it even easier to access passwords and organize credentials all in one place. Gaming advances with a more immersive experience, as well as a breadth of new titles, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Frostpunk 2, and more.

macOS Sequoia also introduces Apple Intelligence , the personal intelligence system for Mac, iPhone, and iPad that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant. Built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. It understands and creates language and images, takes action across apps, and draws from personal context, simplifying and accelerating everyday tasks. Taking full advantage of the power of Apple silicon and the Neural Engine, Apple Intelligence will be supported by every Mac with an M-series chip. 1

macOS Sequoia makes Continuity even more magical with iPhone Mirroring, which allows users to fully access and engage with their iPhone — right from their Mac. A user’s custom wallpaper and icons appear just like on their iPhone, and they can swipe between pages on their Home Screen, or launch and browse any of their favorite apps. The keyboard, trackpad, and mouse on Mac also let a user interact with their iPhone, and audio even comes through. Users can seamlessly drag and drop between iPhone and Mac, and a user’s iPhone remains locked, so nobody else can access or see what the user is doing. It also works great with StandBy, which stays visible, so users can get information at a glance. Additionally, users can review and respond to iPhone notifications directly from their Mac.

Safari, the world’s fastest browser, 2 now offers Highlights, an even easier way to discover information on the web, such as directions, summaries, or quick links to learn more about people, music, movies, and TV shows. A redesigned Reader includes even more ways to enjoy articles without distractions, featuring a streamlined view of the article a user is reading, a summary, and a table of contents for longer articles. And when Safari detects a video on the page, Viewer helps users put it front and center, while still giving them full access to system playback controls, including Picture in Picture.

A stellar lineup of games is coming to Mac — including the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the next installment in Ubisoft’s blockbuster series — alongside new features like Personalized Spatial Audio that make gaming even more immersive.

Users can stay organized with new ways to arrange windows into a layout that works best for them. When a user drags a window to the edge of the screen, macOS Sequoia automatically suggests a tiled position on their desktop. Users can release their window right into place, quickly arrange tiles side by side, or place them in corners to keep even more apps in view. And new keyboard and menu shortcuts help users organize tiles even faster.

The new presenter preview makes it easier to present, letting users see what they’re about to share before they share it, and works with apps like FaceTime and Zoom. Users can also apply beautiful built-in backgrounds, including a variety of color gradients and system wallpapers, or upload their own photos. Background replacements can be applied during a video call in FaceTime or in third-party apps like Webex, and with Apple’s industry-leading segmentation, users will look their best when on a call.

Built on the foundation of Keychain, which was first introduced over 25 years ago, macOS Sequoia brings Passwords, a new app that makes it even easier to access passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and other credentials all in one place. iCloud syncing is backed by secure end-to-end encryption. Passwords works great with Safari, and seamlessly syncs between a user’s Apple devices and Windows with the iCloud for Windows app.

Deeply integrated into macOS Sequoia and built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence unlocks new ways for users to enhance their writing and communicate more effectively. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools built into macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

New image capabilities make communication and self-expression even more fun. With Image Playground, users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Image Playground is easy to use, built right into apps like Messages, and also available in a dedicated app.

Memories in Photos lets users create the stories they want to see just by typing a description. Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc. In addition, a new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject.

With the power of Apple Intelligence, Siri takes a major step forward, becoming even more natural, contextually relevant, and personal. Additionally, users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment — making the Siri experience on Mac incredibly easy and seamless.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for privacy in AI, with the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing and larger, server-based models that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers. When requests are routed to Private Cloud Compute, data is not stored or made accessible to Apple, and is only used to fulfill the user’s requests, and independent experts can verify this privacy promise.

Additionally, access to ChatGPT is integrated into Siri and systemwide Writing Tools across Apple’s platforms, allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools.

The developer beta of macOS Sequoia is available through the Apple Developer Program at developer.apple.com starting today, and a public beta will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program next month at beta.apple.com . The release will be available as a free software update this fall.
