Purpose World Tour

  • Edit source

The tour started on March 9, 2016 in Seattle and finished on July 2, 2017 in London, UK. After that, the last remaining 14 shows of the tour were cancelled due to depression, anxiety and exhaustion.

Visiting the five continents with over 150 shows, the Purpose World Tour became Justin's longest tour and one of the highest-grossing concerts of the 2010s decade.

Background [ ]

The tour was announced on November 11, 2015 on The Ellen DeGeneres Show . That same day, 58 dates in the United States and Canada were revealed on the singer's website. Due to an overwhelming demand, additional shows were added in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami, and New York, totaling 64 shows. Some of the shows that Bieber was supposed to perform at was cancelled. After a couple of days, Bieber announced the reason behind him cancelling the rest of the tour on a heartfelt Instagram post.

My life is a movie and everyone’s watching. So let’s get to the good part and past all the nonsense. This life’s not easy. I know what it feels like to fall. It isn’t until we admit defeat that we are able to find strength. I know what it takes to admit vulnerabilities. Are you willing to be challenged, uncomfortable? What are you willing to withstand to create your destiny? I have to ask myself where does my character lie in times of trouble, my weakness, when is my soul at rest? I encountered so many obstacles along this journey. I made mistakes, stumbled but I have faith and determination to rise. My idea of advice is safety, love, respect and purpose.

Canceled shows [ ]

The cancellation of its last 14 tour dates, including several U.S. stadiums, was described at the time as “unforeseen circumstances” but was in fact a clear mental health crisis. “He was going through something that he wasn’t expressing to anyone,” said Allison Kaye . “We didn’t really understand what we were canceling it for — we just kind of had to.”

When he canceled the last leg of the Purpose tour, the biggest changes he made to get better were going to therapy regularly for the first time and reconnecting with God. “I just changed my priorities so that I didn’t [become] another statistic of young musicians that ended up, like, not making it,” he said. A Bit Of Pop Music

Concert Review: Justin Bieber at Gelredome

justin-bieber-purpose-world-tour

Justin Bieber is ventriloquist without the puppets in Gelredome Even with almost 20 years of Britney Spears in the music business, it is still a strange phenomenon when a pop star gets the crowd going without actually performing live. Justin Bieber takes this ‘art’ even a step further. The pop star does not even bother to lip sync correctly or hold the microphone close to his mouth to make it look like he is singing, while his voice on tape still comes through the speakers. The audience seems to accept this fact and acts entertained anyway.

Bieber performed two nights in a full Gelredome, filled with his biggest fans and other intrigued concert visitors who came to see his Purpose World Tour . Bieber transformed from teen idol into a full blown pop star last year thanks to hits like ‘Sorry’ and ‘Love Yourself’. While his diehard fans screamed their lungs out on Saturday, the audience on Sunday seems to be slightly more mature and a bit calmer. The Golden Circle is of course the centre of the fan action and while they start singing along to each and every song, they seldomly make it past the chorus.

Bieber enters the stage in a transparent cube while he performs album openen ‘Mark My Words’. Every song seems to come with its very own colour. For second track ‘I’ll Show You’ we get a bright orange for example. It almost seems to be inspired on the Star Trek set and the colours are beautiful. For the romantic ‘The Feeling’ we get pink and Bieber actually performs the song live for a change. The rendition is decent, but nothing too special. Not if compared to his impressive and acrobatic dancers at least. Justin is completely dependent on them on stage in order to make the show worthwhile. He behaves like a moody teenager who does the show because he has to, not because he wants to. It seems these days a pop star can get away with this as long as the rest of the show is eye catching enough. The audience still supports him with loud screaming for his older songs, drum solos and sexy interactions with his dancers.

When he performs the well received older single ‘Boyfriend’ you would almost wish he did not act like a ‘normal’ spoilt teenager, but would finally start to behave like the super star he is. He seems bored most of the show and shows his lack of interest when drinking water from a bottle with his back to his fans while a song is not even finished yet. Every now and then he not very spontaneously asks his fans to make some noise, only giving him the opportunity to lip sync even less of his own songs. Bieber appears to be a very special sort of ventriloquist, not carrying puppets with him, but with the ability to blast his voice through the speakers without even moving his lips.

During a little acoustic session with the tracks ‘Love Yourself’ and ‘Cold Water’, we finally see a glimpse of Justin’s vulnerable and more likeable side. We also get to hear that he is a talented young musician, Although Justin occasionaly talks to his fans, the interaction is minimal, but he still dares to ask them if they could please wait with screaming after a song finished. When they want to surprise him with a bunch of balloons, he kicks them off his stage, telling them it was a terrible idea. He does show he can be endearing as well when he hugs the young background dancers that performed ‘Children’ with him. When Justin talks there is not much room for spontaneity, expect when he asks two fighting girls in the crowd ‘who won’ or when is surprised by the fact that he just killed a fly on the drums.

It is easy to conclude that at this stage, Justin Bieber does not quite match his status as hit maker in a live setting. He joins in for some choreographies, but he misses the elements which other world stars, like Bruno Mars (the moves), Beyoncé (intensity) and Usher (flawless execution), do have. Other than that we have to deal with lip syncing and some sentences he does not even finish. Bieber drags himself through the show, without maintaining the idea that he is actually ejoying himself up there. There is a huge gap in quality of the performance in terms the way the stunning show is built up and the way Bieber almost disappears in it, seriously lacking charisma or any other sort of stage presence.

—————————————————— Concert Recensie: Justin Bieber in Gelredome

Zo heb je een prachtig haarscherpe oranje gele kleurige laser show bij zijn tweede nummer ‘I’ll Show You’.

Ondertussen krijgen we wel een welgemeend advies van de Biebster: ‘Please keep the screaming after the songs, appreciate it.’ “What a terrible idea”, verzucht hij.

Justin Bieber Details Massive North American ‘Purpose’ Tour

By Ryan Reed

UPDATE:  Justin Bieber has expanded his  Purpose  world tour to include a fall run in Europe. See below for new dates.

Justin Bieber has announced an expansive tour behind his upcoming fourth LP, Purpose . Spanning major markets across the U.S. and Canada, the singer’s 58-date North American trek kicks off March 9th, 2016 in Seattle and concludes July 18th at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.

American Express cardmembers can purchase advance tickets for the U.S. shows starting Monday, November 16th at noon local time through Thursday, November 19th at 10 p.m. local time. General ticket sales for all shows will begin Friday, November 20th at 10 a.m. local time through the AEG Live website .

Bieber teased the tour during his Wednesday appearance on  Ellen , but he had trouble remembering the jaunt’s start date. “I will start this tour … oh gosh, this is the only thing I had to remember,” he told Ellen DeGeneres, before assuring fans, “You can go to my website to find out.”

The announcement arrives two days before the November 13th release of Purpose , which features singles like the atmospheric “I’ll Show You,” tropical-flavored “Sorry” and soul-searching “What Do You Mean?”

Excluding the 2013 compilation Journals , Purpose is Bieber’s first album since 2012’s Believe . The lengthy tracklist features an array of high-profile collaborators, including Skrillex, Diplo, Big Sean (“No Pressure”), Travis Scott (“No Sense”) and Ariana Grande (the deluxe edition remix of “What Do You Mean?”).

GelreDome

The first stadium with both a retractable pitch and roof, the GelreDome has been a true pioneer as a multifunctional stadium.

Club: Vitesse Arnhem | Opening: 1998 | Capacity: 25,000 seats

History and description

The GelreDome was built to serve as a multifunctional stadium suited for sports, concerts and other events. It was the first football stadium in the world to have a retractable pitch, and, after the Amsterdam ArenA , the second stadium in Europe to have a sliding roof.

The idea of building a multifunctional stadium, which had more than double the capacity of Vitesse’s old Nieuw Monnikenhuizen stadium, came from former Vitesse chairman Karel Aalbers.

The ambitious chairman had been playing with the idea from as early as the late 1980s, but it took until 1996 and the prospect of the upcoming Euro 2000 championships for construction to finally begin.

The GelreDome opened two years later, on 25 March 1998, with a league match between Vitesse and NAC Breda (4-1).

During the Euro 2000 tournament, the stadium hosted three group matches.

The GelreDome, in the end, also led to the downfall of chairman Karel Aalbers as the financial obligations were more than the club could bear. The chairman was removed from his post and in the following years the club had to be financially assisted by the city of Arnhem to be able to survive.

In the last decade, the GelreDome has turned into one of the prime concert venues of the Netherlands, and is praised for its acoustics, climate control system, and roof that does not let in any sunlight.

How to get to GelreDome

The GelreDome is located toward the south of the city of Arnhem on the south bank of the river Rhine at about 2.5 kilometres from Arnhem’s city centre and the central rail station.

On matchdays, shuttle buses run between Arnhem’s railway station and the stadium. The journey takes no more than 5 minutes.

On non-matchdays, take bus 7 from Arnhem central rail station. The bus leaves about every 10 minutes for the 7-minute ride to the stadium. Take the bus in the direction of Rijkerswoerd. Get off at stop GelreDome.

Address: Batavierenweg 25, 6841 HN Arnhem

Eat, drink, and sleep near the GelreDome

The GelreDome is located in a quiet residential area with little around in terms of eating and drinking, which means you can better do this in the nearby and rather pleasant city centre of Arnhem.

There are neither any hotels near the GelreDome , but a few options in Arnhem’s city centre. You can, of course, also stay in the west of The Netherlands and catch a train back after the match.

Vitesse Tickets

Tickets for Vitesse games can be bought online , or at the Vitesse club shop at the stadium.

Vitesse require possession of a Vitesse Fancard to be able to buy tickets for some matches. Most matches go on general sale though.

If tickets remain available, and Vitesse hardly ever sell out a match, these can also be bought on the day of the match at the stadium. However, the same Fancard requirement may apply.

Ticket prices depend on the opponent, but typically range from €19.00 for a seat behind the goal to €55.00 for a central seat at the main stand. Prices get increased by €4.00-€10.00 for a few high-profile matches.

You can find a seating map here . For more information call +31 (0) 26 880 7337 or email  [email protected] .
