Accommodation and food were superb. Safaris in the two jungles were organized splendidly. And we had mesmerizing experiences in these two forests. We could see three tigers, one leopard, wild dogs, wild bores, deeds, lots of birds and crocodile and like. All of us had great fun in the tour. We wish to tour with Suhana Safar again and again.

Intro (2004):

I have always dreamed of travelling all over India, to see every remote village, river and mountain in this vast country. To meet people everywhere and experience their diverse cultures, gods & food.

In 2003, I was already 55 years old. When am I going to fulfill my dreams? I knew, I had to do this soon while I was still able to travel and use my legs to trek in the mountains. So, in Sept 2003,  I decided to retire from work and take up travel, more or less full time! It took me 6 months, to handover all work responsibilities .... and finally, I 'retired' on 31st March 2004!

I bought a copy of Lonely Planet's "India" Guide and started reading that, state by state. Later (after a few trips) I realized how practical and accurate this Guide was! Though LP is written for foreigners visiting India, I found it perfect for my purpose. Any place LP said was worth visiting and seeing was really so! In fact, Even Better!! 

The Tours listed below lead you to pages that describe my travels & treks in "diary" format. The narratives are brief; as I have relied more on pictures from my digital-camera to tell the full story. Your feedback & comments are welcome by email at: [email protected] 

Update (Mar-2009): This blog is a diary of my personal experiences. It is not a travel-trek guide. I don't have the expertise to advise anyone on such treks or tours. At most, I can provide some tips. Anybody with determination and normal fitness can do these treks & tours. However,  if you are trekking to higher altitudes (above 3000M / 10,000 ft.) do read the "trekking advise" chapters in any Trekking Guide. I found the first few chapters of Lonely Planet's "Trekking in the Indian Himalaya" very useful. On a trek it is best to have a local guide-porter to show you the way and carry your bag, so you can enjoy the walk without a load on your back. I have often taken Debu as a Guide (+91 94103-12519) for my treks in Kumaon and Sonu in Garhwal (+91 89547-16089). 

Update (Mar-2010): This blog was started in 2005 using Google-Pages. In 2009, migrated it to Google Sites. Have retained the blog's old style and looks; but taken this opportunity to link  Hi-Res pictures from Flickr; so now a picture can be "clicked" to see a large image. This will mean initial page loading will be slower, but I hope faster broad-band speeds will compensate. 

Update (March-2020): In last 10 years, I have done more treks in Nepal than in India! The main attraction of Nepal, for me, is the easy & wonderful "Teahouse Trekking" you can do there. Most trek routes in Nepal, have Tea-Houses & Homestays run by local Villagers which serve hot fresh-cooked food and have Guest Rooms furnished with cots, mattresses and comforters. For my treks in Nepal I hire a porter-guide to carry my main bag from a Trekking Agency - Asian Hiking Team in Thamel area in Kathmandu. Suman Neupane is a friendly and helpful proprietor of the Agency (email: [email protected]). 

Update (21-April-2021): After surviving a year  of Corona Quarantine, with hardly any activities, Google has announced that I must migrate my blog from their "Classic Sites" to a modern "New Sites" latest by 1st Sept 2021. So I have started that process now, with their 'auto-migration' tool.  Though the auto-migration has worked well I now have some fine-tuning and alignment work to be done.  But it is a 'welcome work' as I can be busy  for a few weeks, while the Corona Wave-2  rages outside.  And enjoy the dopamine releases while re-living old memories and pictures. BTW: The Google "New Sites" is auto-enabled for viewing on Mobile Phones. However,  I would recommend seeing my blog on a large screen Desktop or Laptop to enjoy the many panoramic pictures I have uploaded. Or, if are using a Mobile you could 'cast' on a TV screen to view . 

Update (March -2023): Post Corona managed to do some more long-treks in Nepal, including some in Gokyo Lake & Rhenjo La and a few treks in South of Annapurna middle-hills. At age 75 now, not many more long-treks left, I think!

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

When you have your ticket, go outside to the platform listed on the ticket and wait for the bus. Simple really!

Not the actual bus in the end. The bus was more of a minivan.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

  Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

  From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

Direct to Suzdal

  Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

  Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.  

  The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.  

  The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

  Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.
