A Guide to Boat Tours and River Cruises around Minneapolis and St. Paul

Discover The Cities

  • Updated August 2, 2021

One of the coolest parts about the Twin Cities is their plentiful access to water.

That’s why exploring the Twin Cities via boat is one of our “must try” activities, no matter if you’re a long time resident or just visiting for the weekend.

But since narrowing down the many options is no easy task, we thought we’d lend a local’s hand with this detailed guide to boat and river cruise around Minneapolis and St. Paul.

  • The Who, What, Where of Boat & River Cruises
  • What are the most popular boat tours and river cruises in Minneapolis & St. Paul?
  • Where do cruises go?

Padelford Riverboats

Paradise charter & minneapolis queen, al & alma’s, st croix boat and packet, magnolia blossom cruises, the who, what, where of boat & river cruises  .

As the residents of the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Twin Cities locals know a good riverboat cruise when we see one.

  • A great location?   Check ✓
  • Easy-to-use reservations system? Check ✓
  • Dining and drinks onboard?   Check ✓ and Check ✓

Whether it’s exploring the architectural wonders spanning the Mighty Mississippi or sipping cocktails as the sun goes down, there are plenty of options for boat tours and river cruises in Minneapolis and St. Paul that meet all the requirements on our must-try list.

What are the most popular boat tours and river cruises in Minneapolis & St. Paul?

Before you decide on a vendor and dates for your Minneapolis-St. Paul boat tour, it’s best to decide what type of cruise you’d like to take.   Different boats offer different tour types; some are focused on the scenery, others are more focused on the food and entertainment onboard.   Here are some of the more popular boat tour and river cruise options:

  • Sunset Dinner Cruise – Sunset dinner cruises are by far some of the most popular and first to book up reservations.   Most of the boat operators in the Twin Cities offer some form of a sunset cruise, departing the dock 1-2 hours before dark for dinner and drinks while the sun goes down.   These tours are great for long summer nights when the best place to be is on the water.
  • Sightseeing Cruise – End-of-the-day boat tours might not be the best option for families or visitors trying to fit in other items on the Twin Cities travel itinerary.   If that’s the case, you may want to consider a general sightseeing cruise.   The daytime trips for Twin Cities boat and river tours often fall in this category, with options to see bridges, well-known landmarks and do some wildlife watching.
  • Brunch Cruise – It’s hard to go wrong with a Minneapolis brunch in general. But then make that brunch on a boat, and you’re pretty much set for a terrific outing. Brunch cruises typically depart at 10 AM, have a great menu, and are a casual way to relax and enjoy the water and the weekend.
  • Fall Color Cruises – From late September to mid-October, the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul light up with some of the best fall colors in the Upper Midwest.   We love to recommend it to out-of-town guests or friends; get out and enjoy the cooler temperatures and enjoy the mid-day or afternoon fall color cruise.
  • Holiday Cruises – Mother’s Day?   4 th of July?   Labor Day?   If there’s a summer holiday you love to celebrate, there’s a pretty good chance you can commemorate the day with a boat cruise on the Mississippi River.   All the major tour operators in the Twin Cities offer cruises for these events—just make sure to snag reservations well in advance.
  • Private Party – If you’re checking out options for an upcoming private party venue, summertime boat cruises are a great option to explore. Getting a group together for a birthday, anniversary, class reunion, or corporate event is easy and more affordable than you might think.

Where do cruises go?

Not only are there options for the type of boat cruise, but there are also options for departure.   Choosing the tour location changes what you can expect to see and the type of boat you’ll end up taking.   Here are the 4 top departure locations for boat tours and river cruises in the Twin Cities:

  • Mississippi River in Downtown Minneapolis – Departing from Bohemian Flats Park near downtown Minneapolis, taking a Mississippi River cruise from this location means excellent views of the downtown Minneapolis skyline, the historic Stone Arch Bridge, and the University of Minnesota campus.
  • Mississippi River in Downtown St. Paul – For terrific views of the St. Paul skyline and the best chance to see wildlife in the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, depart from downtown St. Paul.   You’ll also have an opportunity to board some historic riverboats at the docks on Harriet Island.
  • Lake Minnetonka – Looking for the best drinks and food?   Want to take a cruise on a newer, luxury yacht? Best to head west for a boat tour on Lake Minnetonka.   We love these tours for ogling at the giant houses while we sip on sundowners.
  • St. Croix River in Stillwater – One trip over the I-94 bridge from Minnesota to Wisconsin, and it’s pretty clear that the St. Croix River is a top Twin Cities boating destination.   Several river tours depart the docks near Stillwater during the summer, with both traditional paddleboat options and upscale dinner cruises. This is our top spot for fall colors as well.

The Top Twin Cities Boat and River Cruise Companies

Ready to book your cruise?   Try out one of these Twin Cities boat and river cruise companies for the best tours and destinations:

More than 5 million visitors have taken a riverboat cruise with Padleford Riverboats in downtown St. Paul.   They offer the largest selection of tour options (sightseeing, dining, themed cruises, school trips, and private events) and have some of the best deals on tickets and dining.   On Mondays, Padleford hosts a $10 cruise with 2-for-1 beers after 6 PM – an excellent happy hour option for co-workers and friends.

  • Location – Downtown St. Paul: 205 Dr. Justus Ohage Blvd, St. Paul, MN 55107
  • Website: Padleford Riverboats

As the largest tour operator in the Twin Cities (five vessels in two locations), Paradise Charters has more than 30 years of experience taking trips on the Mississippi River and Lake Minnetonka. They have an extensive portfolio of tour choices, including a full calendar of tours running seven days a week during the summer. Expect to shell out a bit more for tickets on Paradise cruises, with most tickets running $35-40 per person.

  • Location – Downtown Minneapolis: 2150 W River Pkwy, Minneapolis, MN 55454
  • Location – Port of Excelsior/Lake Minnetonka: 2 Water St, Excelsior, MN 55331
  • Website: Paradise Charter Cruises

Consistently voted on “Best of the Twin Cities” lists, Al and Alma’s boat charters on Lake Minnetonka have been offering tours on the lake since 1973.   Their fleet includes the largest motorized yacht on Lake Minnetonka, the 83-foot “Bella Vista,” and some of Minnesota’s most expensive public yachts.   Al and Alma’s cruises also feature food prepped from their Cooks Bay supper club—expect better menu options than you’ll find on any other Twin Cities boat cruises.

  • Location – Lake Minnetonka: Lake Minnetonka (multiple locations for departure)
  • Website: Al & Alma’s

Located on the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway near Stillwater, St. Croix Boat and Packet (aka Stillwater River Boats) is home to one of the largest river tour boats in the Twin Cities Metro.  St. Croix operates six boats, seven days per week, with cruises from 11:30 AM to 8 PM.  Their largest boat holds more than 650 guests, with multiple floors of bars and dining and a terrific roof deck for river viewing.

  • Location: 525 Main St S, Stillwater, MN 55082
  • Website: St. Croix Boat and Packet Co.

Looking for an unforgettable party venue for a group of 60-100 friends, family, or co-workers?   The Magnolia Blossom Cruise company offers private charter cruises on their historic riverboat.   The tour boat docks on the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul, allowing trips customized to view downtown Minneapolis or downtown St. Paul scenery.   The Magnolia is one of the few boats that will navigate the lock and dam at Ford Parkway, something your guests won’t soon forget.   Note, Magnolia does not offer public boat cruises; the tours are by charter contract only.

  • Location – Mississippi River near St. Paul: 2500 Crosby Farm Rd, St Paul, MN 55116

  • JoanneZ625 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic tour of the Twin Cities & Great Value! So enjoyed this tour. The guide talked almost non stop with such interesting info from history to current day. Learned more in the 3 hr tour than in my 17 yrs living in the Mpls / St Paul area. The bus inside was very new & comfortable and had a restroom. The driver maneuvered the ride very smooth/safe unlike some tours I have been on in other cities. The driver and tour narrator worked well together & very accommodating. On the day we toured a protest was going on at the state capital and roads were blocked but they circled around and found a side road that we were able to still get out for a closer look at the grounds and building. Definitely a great value too, Totally recommend this tour to out of town visitors and locals! Read more Written October 27, 2023

Excellent and very informed guide with nice sense of humor. Gave us new and interesting information about both Minneapolis and St Paul. I did not see there was a senior rate or I could have saved $4. My wife got ill 2 1/2 hours into the trip so we had to leave and missed the last hour plus I had to get an uber to take us home to Woodbury and then get another ride to go get my car in MPLs. Can you find a way to advertise your tours. I tried to find tours by contactin both St Paul and Mpls and was told they have no tours like other major cities do. By accident I learned of your tour. I would recommend the tour even for locals who haven’t otherwise learned the history and Native American roots of the area. My only complaint is the heavy emphasis on the most upper class neighborhoods. Overall, it was well-spent time and money for a visitor and for myself, a new resident. 7 best US river cruises

Donna Heiderstadt

Whether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

river cruises minnesota

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.

Marilyn (rohlf) van patten-chuba.

Marilyn (nee Rohlf) Van Patten-Chuba

Our dear Wife, Mother and Friend, Marilyn Van PattenChuba, age 86, of Elk River, passed away peacefully at home on April 14, 2024. A seven year breast cancer survivor she was ultimately felled by unrelated Glioblastoma. She, of generous, passionate, loving spirit, was a talented artist who lived a vibrant life, loved by family, friends and the entire community for whom she cared and served.

Marilyn was born June 11, 1937 in Rush City, MN. In 1940, her sister, Deanne was born and in 1941 the family of four moved to Elk River. By 1954, the family had grown to seven children. Marilyn attended Elk River Schools where she developed many life-long friends. Always a beautiful and popular girl, through her membership in the Meadowvale 4-H Club, in high school she was chosen to be a Dairy Princess.

Marilyn spent her lifetime learning and her high intellect combined with her natural curiosity led her to several educational achievements. Upon graduation in 1955, she studied engineering, architecture and drafting at the University of Minnesota. Later, Marilyn received an Associate of Arts degree from St. Cloud State University (SCSU). She continued her education completing various courses at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. In her mid-70's, she returned to SCSU and received an Applied Associate Science degree in Gerontology. Beginning in 2023, Marilyn spent over 130 hours taking online German lessons, continuing to study and practice even immediately after her December 2023 surgery and stay at North Memorial Hospital.

In 1956 Marilyn married the late Kenneth Van Patten, having four children: Lorrie, Leslie, Richard and Sage. Marilyn met Dennis Chuba, at an Elk River Community Theater meeting in 1977. Inseparable from that day forward, they entered into the celebration of marriage August 30, 1985, an event followed by a Mississippi River reception cruise on the Jonathan Paddleford. Marilyn and Dennis celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary in 2023.

Always ambitious, in 1957 she began her career at Honeywell, where she worked on aircraft guidance systems, patent drawings and designing miniature circuits. Marilyn's career moved on in 1967, when she served as a draftsperson for United Power Association (Great River Energy) working on substation designs, transmission line routing, and ordering parts for the 1977 distribution substations. Next, Marilyn continued her technical engineering career, working for Litton Microwave and several other drafting firms in the Twin Cities.

In the 1980's, Marilyn began her real estate career by working for Christian Realty in Rogers. After several years, Marilyn and two partners purchased the first Coldwell Banker real estate franchise in Elk River. Her real estate career continued throughout the remainder of her life. Marilyn was known for providing exceptional care and counsel to her clients. Marilyn's caring, compassionate nature led her to create the Beehive Memory Care facility in Elk River. Her commitment never wavered as, together with Dennis, she worked tirelessly to manage the facility's design and build, the shepherding through countless inspections, the adherence to all strict healthcare codes, securing financing, finding, vetting and training staff, satisfying all the rigorous city and state licensing approvals and finally securing residents. Whenever she encountered a seemingly insurmountable problem, she would pray for a solution, and her faith was almost always rewarded with a prompt resolution. The Beehive Memory Care Facility opened in October 2017 and rapidly became a premier memory care establishment in Elk River. The Beehive has accommodated almost 100 residents and their families with loving care inspired by Marilyn's guidance. This loving culture Marilyn and Dennis have established as the foundation of the Beehive's care has been adopted by the entire staff and will live on in her memory.

Marilyn was a charter member of the Elk River Community Theater and over the years was involved in most aspects of its plays. During her tenure she served as a producer, program designer and editor, set builder and painter, box office manager, advertising manager, fund raising manager, make-up artist, property mistress, costumer, as well as acting in several productions. For more than 30 years Marilyn was an active member of the Elk River Rotary Club holding offices of secretary and president. Several times Marilyn was the leading ticket seller for the Rotary's annual "Taste of Elk River" celebration, (even if she had to buy the tickets herself). Marilyn was the recipient of one of Rotary International's highest honors, recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow. Marilyn was an active member of many organizations, Chairperson of the Elk River Arts Council; Board member of CAER Food Shelf; and served as Governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants representing the State of Minnesota.

Marilyn had a love of travel, both foreign and domestic. She visited Europe many times, and of particular interest were Germany, France, England, Italy and Ireland. She was one of the early visitors to China. She vacationed with friends in Mexico, Palm Springs and Gulf Shores, Alabama. Marilyn's interest in theater took her to NYC where she stayed in the theater district just off Time Square. Over many years she was able to attend scores of Broadway plays. She and Dennis toured the State of Wisconsin every August for 20 years, driving their classic Cadillac convertible to join another 200 open air vehicles.

Marilyn loved her flower gardens and encouraged perennials to bloom spring to fall. She was a marvelous cook and baker. She was known for her canned tomatoes, spaghetti sauce and plum jelly, derived from the fruit of her two plum trees.

She was a talented artist, painting portraits, landscapes and her pet friends. She spent many sessions at Harvey Schroeder’s Art Studio classes with her daughters and friends. She traveled with the arts studio’s sponsored trips to Europe and enjoyed membership in the Manamore art group.

A Christian believer from an early age, Marilyn’s faith strengthened when in 2002 she joined husband Dennis in the community of Elk River’s St. Andrews Church. She loved the traditions and the devotions to Mary in the Catholic Church and she relished the support of her friends in faith.

Marilyn is predeceased by her parents, Harley and Margaret Rohlf and her sister, Deanne Rohlf.

Marilyn is survived by her spouse of 38 years, Dennis Chuba; her children: Lorrie (Gary) Link, Leslie Van Patten, Richard Van Patten, and Sage (Christopher Hawn) Walker; grandchildren: Michael Link, Jon Link, Nate (Cami) Haberman, Robert (Christine) Haberman, Kristin (Ralph) Sturrock and numerous great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters: Harley “Butch” Rohlf Jr, Larry “Pete” Rohlf, Susan Larson, Amy Bodnar and Steve Rohlf, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Harley and Margaret Rohlf and her sister Deanne Rohlf.

Viking River Cruises

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days

Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. 2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans
