Crete to Rhodes

The distance from Crete to Rhodes Ρόδος is 485 km or 266 nautical miles. A plane flight takes 1 hour. The ferry journey is 10-14 hours. More details about getting from Crete to Rhodes below.

Exploring the island of Rhodes is full of surprises . Famous not only for her history and beautiful beaches, we love the village of Lindos , surely one of the most picturesque and fascinating seaside settlements in the Mediterranean.

We love Rhodes for her beaches and her history, and the discovery of a very different culture from our own beloved Kriti. Let us show you a little bit of what we discovered in the Dodecanese.

Rhodes Old Town Greece - View from Town Gate

The Old Town of Rhodes

Crete to Rhodes - we suggest to avoid the busy tourist times of July and August and visit in shoulder or off-season, you will still be able to enjoy the atmosphere of this cosmopolitan town.

The turrets of the walls of the old town of Rhodes are etched in our memory. We glanced up from every angle whilst we walked around the old town, meandering through the various gates of entry and exploring different squares. The mixture of medieval towers, Greek and Italian architecture and tiny cobbled streets is entrancing.

Taso says

"There are major sights to see; what we enjoyed was wandering without a plan through the old town and being surprised at every turn with a new view, a little steno or lane way, a different plateia or square, varied architecture, cafés and restaurants".

Highlights of the Old Town include:

The Palace of the Grand Masters

The street of the knights, the archaeological museum.

  • Socratous Street
  • Hippocratos Square

The History of Rhodes

Rhodes Cathedral Old Town - Church of the Virgin Mary of the Burgh

Crete to Rhodes - the history of Rhodes unfolds before your eyes. Rhodes was inhabited since Neolithic times, and earliest complex settlements seem to have been made from 1600 BC. The island’s location at the cross roads of Europe and the east , and proximity to Cyprus and Crete meant she was invaded and ruled by many different peoples over the centuries, and became one of the most important cities in ancient Greece.

Through the classical period, the Roman and Byzantine periods she remained one of the most influential cities in the Mediterranean. In 1309 AD she was ruled by the Knights of St John and later the Ottomans dominated. In recent times, between 1912 and 1947, Italy ruled the island, making significant architectural and structural changes. Rhodes became part of the nation of Greece under the Treaty of Paris in 1948.

The Old Town of Rhodes was declared a world heritage site in 1988. The UNESCO website describes the…"Upper Town is one of the most beautiful urban ensembles of the Gothic period."

The town was once surrounded by a protective moat which has now been emptied of water and forms a green park fringe around the old town which makes for a relaxing walk, whilst admiring the town and palace walls. See the section below on ferry trips from Crete to Rhodes.

Palace of the Grand Masters

The Palace of the Grand Masters was built by the Knights of St John in the 14th Century. It was damaged by explosion of powder in 1856. It has been immaculately restored since then and seems as if it was built just yesterday. The building sits above the town, an imposing sight from the harbour side, it dominates the skyline.

The stunning towers either side of the entrance leave little doubt about the wealth of the builders and are an example of the strength to come within the structure.

The impressive central courtyard leads to large palatial rooms which house a collection of furniture, marbles, statues and artifacts. The rooms such as the reception hall and the ballroom are very impressive, if a little stark. The mosaics are some of the best preserved in the Mediterranean.

Toli says

"Leave plenty of time to walk through the palace as it is large and there is a lot to see; of over 150 rooms in the building, only 20 or so are open to the public. Your entry fee of €10 also covers the Archaeological Museum and the Arts Collection".

We loved the steep-sided moats around the Palace, and from the Ambroise Gate to Saint Anthony's Gate leading to streets around the Palace is one of the most picturesque walkways. It is lovely to wander there at dusk and soak up the atmosphere.

Rhodes Old Town

The Street of the Knights is a dark, cobbled street hardly touched since medieval times and gives a very good impression of what it would have been like to live within these walls.

This historic street is named Ippoton and stretches from the Palace of the Grand Masters down the hill to the Archaeological Museum. In the middle ages it housed seven inns representing the seven homelands of the Knights . There is a lack of modern construction on this street and few shops, so it tends to be quieter than other streets.

The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is inside the former Hospital of the Knights, at the corner of Appelou and Ippoton Streets. The extensive collection takes a while to see, so leave this visit for another day if you are already planning to see the Palace. But don’t miss it, as it is a genuine atmosphere inside the 15th Century building, and exquisite pieces from the complex history of this crossroads of east and west.

One of the most beautiful pieces in the museum is a marble statue 'Aphrodite of Rhodes' which is more then 2,000 years of age, dated 100 BC.

Socratous Street & Hippocratos Square

Socratous Street Rhodes

Crete to Rhodes - Socratous Σωκράτους Street is the centre of shopping in the old town. Whilst soaking up the atmosphere, you will find pieces crafted from the skills of the Rhodians over many centuries including jewellery, ceramics, carpets, embroidery, wines, ouzo, olive oil and honey. See the section below on travelling from Crete to Rhodes.

Hippocratos Square is close to the Marine gate. This is a large square with a fringe of historic buildings in Rhodian style, cafes and interesting shopping. The central feature is a fountain with a unique design. We love the owl symbol atop the centre piece of the fountain, which is called the Castellania Fountain.

The commercial buildings around the square were built by the Knights of St John and date from 1597.

Exploring Around Rhodes Island

Lindos Beach and Acropolis

Rhodes has so much to offer outside of the Old Town. Some highlights are below, you can make your self-drive trip clockwise around the island starting and ending in the Old Town.

  • Tsambika Τσαμπίκα Monastery and Tsambika Beach
  • Lindos Λίνδος Village and Lindos Acropolis (above)
  • Monolithos Μονόλιθος Castle
  • Kameiros Κάμειρος Archaeological Site
  • The Valley of the Butterflies Πεταλούδες

Don't forget to stop in at small villages all over Rhodes to get the real feel of the island.

Accommodation in the Old Town

Crete to Rhodes - we have chosen some great places to stay in Ρόδος for different budgets.

In our selections we have focused on guesthouses in the old town, because we strongly believe it is one of the most beautiful towns on the Mediterranean. The medieval town is a UNESCO World heritage site, still vibrant and alive with life. Famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, this port and township has a million stories to tell.

We cannot repeat enough - how beautiful the old town of Rhodes is - and we highly recommend staying within the old town walls, as facing the modern world will seem a rude shock. To really soak up the atmosphere of the town is to stay within the walls.

Mango Rooms

Mango Rooms - a good budget option within the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes, above a cafe, on the very pretty and leafy Dorieos Square.

This hotel it is good value, clean and convenient. Mango Rooms are open all year long, there is a roof top balcony with lovely views over the plateia and rooftops of the old zone, which has a story at every turn.

In the plateia is the old stone pergola and many trees, within walking distance are lots of cafes and restaurants.

“Marvelous place where to stay in Rodos. The location is perfect to enjoy the Old Town. The staff is charming and very helpful. The restaurant is excellent.”

Avalon Boutique Hotel - Rhodes

The Avalon Boutique Hotel is located in the old town of Rhodes. With only 6 suites, it showcases the character of the medieval building with all modern conveniences. The eclectic mix of styles hints at the modern stylistic of Rhodes itself, which is a cheeky mix of all styles through the ages with a seemingly scant regard for rules.

Rather a blackbird's collection of shiny things, brick-a-brack, fabric and textures culminating in an abundant overflowing of the ages past and present. The Avalon provides a luxurious and elegant experience within the cobbled streets.

9 Haritos Street - adjacent to the distinctive Knights Street, a skip away from the Grand Masters Palace.

Spirit of the Knights Boutique Hotel - Rhodes

Spirit of the Knights Boutique Hotel - located on a high point of the old town of Rhodes in a narrow lane way close to the old town walls. This architecturally designed, small guesthouse is just minutes away from the Grand Masters Palace , shops, bars, cafes and restaurants yet in a quiet lane away from the hustle and bustle.

This is a luxury boutique hotel with only 6 rooms, each one different. The restoration of the building was accomplished with close collaboration of architects and archaeologists, the owners keen to restore it with the utmost integrity . The result is magnificent, and travellers rave about the design and presentation, and the exceptional service.

The decoration of the suites is part of the charm and enjoyment of visiting here, with exotic items from Greece, Morocco, Turkey, Persia and the East. The ambience reflects the mercurial, colourful crossroads at Rhodes since ancient times.

Add to that a conscious environmental management approach, from the construction materials to the body care items, and travellers experience something very special, in a family run enterprise with personal attention.

Nikos Takis Studio

The Nikos Takis Fashion Hotel is at 26 Panaitiou Street, just around the corner from the Grand Masters Palace and Ippoton Street. Again, this location is superb and this is a luxurious way to enjoy the old town of Rhodes.

Greek fashion designers Nikos and Takis have dressed Sofia Loren, Ornella Mutti, Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Maria Callas and Nana Mouskouri among others over the years and have now turned their design talents to restoring and decorating this 19th century building in the centre of Rhodes.

What a gorgeous result, but their talent does not stop there. The real measure of a hotel is its hospitality , and here it is given in yards and yards like the fabrics lining the rooms.

For those with an eye for European haute couture fashion, it should be no surprise that these respected designers have extended their vision to include this immaculate, stunning hotel.

Most of the public buildings were strategically built on precipitous terraces. This is why you will not find fortifications in this ancient Acropolis.

6. the aquarium of rhodes.

Another reason we believe that Rhodes is an excellent family destination is that there are many exciting places that appeal to kids and adults alike. The local aquarium is no exception. It is located in Rhodes’ Hydrobiological Station in Rhodes City and hosts a marine museum.

The building occupies a circular area with over 25 tanks sheltering fish and marine organisms typical of the Mediterranean Sea, such as sea turtles, seals, dolphins, crabs, and a few species of sharks. The center also has a particular area to treat and protect certain species, mostly turtles and seals.

7. Castle Of Monolithos

One of the most magnificent sites on the island, the castle is located on top of a massive rock overlooking the small village of Monolithos, about 70 km from the town of Rhodes.

The Venetian castle dates back to the last years of the 1400s, and although it is mainly in ruins, it is the perfect place to enjoy the spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and the beach underneath.

8. Petaloudes (Valley Of The Butterflies)

Greece Travel Blog_Things To Do In Rhodes_Valley of the Butterflies

The Valley of the Butterflies, locally known as Petaloudes, is located near the village of Theologos. This is a stunning green valley and park about 27 km from Rhodes Town.

The natural reserve is a lush valley populated with a massive colony of butterflies during spring and autumn . The Pelekanos River crosses the valley with several bridges and endless waterfalls along its whole length.

9. The Great Hammam

Another important building worth the visit is Rhodes’ Great Hammam, also known as the Baths of Suleiman. The building is believed to date back to the fourteenth century, probably in 1558, when the Ottoman Turks occupied most of the islands in the Dodecanese. This is one of the several Turkish Baths that remain scattered around the Medieval Town of Rhodes.

The building is an impressive structure with stunning red-tiled cupolas, featuring a section devoted to the men’s baths and a more modern area for women added years later. Once inside, you will be surprised by the rich decorations, including marble floors, elegant fountains, and numerous domes.

The renovated building is a hammam spa that offers visitors relaxing body and natural beauty treatments .

10. Panagia Filerimos Monastery

Located in the village of Ialyssos, on the side of a hill, the monastery was also constructed by the Knights of Saint John in the Middle Ages.

The monastery is one of the best-preserved religious structures on the island and a beautiful example of Medieval architecture. It is located 10 km from Rhodes Town, and it’s made of stone in Gothic style. Not far from the monastery, it is possible to visit the remains of Ancient Ialyssos, one of the three most powerful city-states of Rhodes.

11. Rhodes Museums

There are a handful of fascinating museums on the island for those interested in digging into the area’s history.

Archaeological Museum Of Rhodes

To learn more about the island’s history, the best thing to do once you’ve explored the main archaeological sites is to devote a couple of hours to the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes in the Old Town.

One of the reasons for the visit is the setting. The museum is set in the former Hospital of the Kings, one of the most important Medieval buildings on the island, with a gorgeous interior courtyard and well-preserved stone walls and columns.

The museum’s exhibits include a collection from Hellenistic to Early Christian times. Objects include vases, figurines, mosaic floors, and funerary slabs of the Knights.

Jewish Museum

Witness the different cultures and communities that have, since ancient times, been part of the society of Rhodes at the Jewish Museum of Rhodes. During the Second World War, the local Jewish community was devastated and followed the same sad fate as many other Jewish communities that populated the most important Greek Islands . You can visit the museum in the Old Town Synagogue Kahal Shalom.

The exhibits include ceremonial dresses and religious objects, old marriage contracts, theological books, and a curious Turkish travel document from 1910. It is a manuscript by the Sultan that permits a young local boy to leave the island with his family.

Rhodes Toy Museum

A fantastic exhibition that attracts kids and parents, the Rhodes Toy Museum is close to the village of Archipoli. It is known for its collection of toys, all made in Greece and built between 1930 and 1990.

An area in the museum is entirely devoted to Lego and Playmobil, while there are also interactive toys and handicrafts. The most important pieces include tin toys , board games, and functioning coin-operated arcade machines that visitors can enjoy and play with. The gift shop sells original souvenirs , and the outside area also features a kids’ playground.

Museum Of Bees And Honey

One more original and fascinating place to see in the Rhodes museum is in Patsida, a village about 5 km from Rhodes Town. The Museum of Honey and the Natural History of the Bee is an original place to visit that thoroughly explains and shows the process of beekeeping and honey production.

Greece heatwave 2024: is it safe to travel and should you cancel your holiday

After the country was scorched by its earliest heatwave on record, here is everything you need to know if you have a trip booked amid more extreme temperatures

Liv Kelly

Greece is one of the sunniest countries in Europe , and the bright weather paired with lovely beaches and striking scenery have made it a well-established summer getaway spot for years.

However, Greece’s warm temperatures make it highly prone to heatwaves and wildfires, which are only becoming more common because of the climate emergency. Extreme temperatures scorched the country in a Europe-wide heatwave last summer , and Greece already experienced it ’s earliest ever heatwave in min-June.  Wildfires have spread around Cyprus , Kos, Chios and Crete , and  the Acropolis, Greece’s most popular tourist attraction, was forced to close  for the hottest parts of the day during this period.

These extreme temperatures have now skyrocketed again, reaching a blistering 45C in some regions. I t looks like Greece is set for a long and searingly hot summer.  Here is everything you need to know about the Greece heatwave if you have a trip booked.

Which areas have been affected by the heatwave in Greece?

Areas across Greece are about to be affected by the heatwave as extremely hot weather is set to prevail for 10 days from July 15 to 24.  Based on maps from WXCharts , the region around Larissa is predicted to experience blistering 45C temperatures, and areas such as Thessaloniki, Skopje and Athens, which will see temperatures of around 41-42C.

In Greece, temperatures above 38C which last at least three days constitute a heatwave.

So, is it safe to travel to Greece right now?

Travelling to Greece hasn’t been advised against, but if you have a trip booked, you’ll need to take precautions to stay safe. During the previous heatwave in some areas, people were told to remain indoors between 11am and 3pm, and in June schools were suspended and attractions, including the Acropolis, were closed due to wildfire fears .

Greece’s extreme temperatures during the first heatwave sadly led to the deaths of a handful of tourists, the first of which was British author and TV presenter Michael Mosely on the island of Symi, many of whom were out hiking during the hottest parts of the day.

What islands were affected by the wildfires?

Back in April, there was a wildfire on the island of Crete which injured three people. More recently, Paphos, a city in southwest Cyprus, has experienced wildfires. Five villages in the area were evacuated, and many homes and farms have been destroyed by the fire. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported as a result of wildfires.

The islands of Kos, Chios and Crete have all also experienced wildfires in the last few weeks.

What is the UK Foreign Office saying?

The Foreign Office hasn’t advised against travelling to Greece, but on the safety and security section of the website, it reads: ‘There are active wildfires across Greece, including in populated areas on the mainland and a number of islands. Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The situation can change quickly. Follow ‘112 Greece’ on X (formerly known as Twitter) for official updates.

You should:

  • take care when visiting or driving through woodland areas
  • make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished
  • not light barbecues

Causing a forest fire is treated as a criminal offence in Greece even if unintentional. If you see a forest fire, call the emergency services on 112. Forest fires can also cause travel disruption in wider areas.’

There’s more advice in this section about what to do if you find yourself in an area affected by wildfires – you can read that here .

What are your rights if you’ve booked a trip to Greece?

You won’t be entitled to a refund on your trip, as the Foreign Office hasn’t advised against travel to Greece. However, if you are concerned, it’s worth contacting your travel provider to see what can be done – you may be able to move the dates you travel.

What’s the hottest Greece has ever been?

Greece actually holds the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe. On July 10 1977, Elefsina (which is in the Athens metropolitan area) reached a scorching 48C. The longest heatwave ever recorded in Greece was in July 2023, lasting for 16 days.

When was the last heatwave in Greece?

The last heatwave in Greece was only a few weeks ago, and broke the record as the earliest one ever. Temperatures reached up to 43C in some areas on June 12 and 13. About the upcoming heatwave,  Greek Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis said ‘People need to understand that climate change is happening and that they need to be very careful. We have had cases of foreign travellers who lost their lives in Greece.’

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Related: What to Know About All 16 Ships in the Celebrity Cruises Fleet

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Crete holidays

At the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia, Greece’s largest island is a vivid patchwork of influences packed with unique food, culture and scenery. The southern coast is all coves and cliffs and is great for diving while the north offers sun-soaked beaches galore and lively resorts. Stumble across isolated archaeological sites, sheltered beaches, Byzantine frescoed chapels, ancient villages and more besides.

Aegean treasures.

Hike your way through Europe’s longest gorge, the Samaria, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or to the Ideon Andron cave on Mount Idi or Diktean Cave – two sites that lay a claim to being the birthplace of Zeus, according to legend.

Hike and forage for herbs amid beautiful wildflowers on your way along the E4 Trail and ‘the Gorge of the Dead’ in some of Crete’s wildest corners. Sample crisp and spicy local Assyrtiko wines (the island’s home to Europe’s oldest wine press) or a potent slug of raki and call in to a traditional kafeneion coffeehouse to mingle with locals. Visit wild and rugged Stavros Beach where Zorba the Greek was filmed and lose yourself in history-steeped Rethymno, full of Ottoman and Venetian treasures.

The west coast boasts spectacular and remote beaches such as Balos, where a pristine, white curl of sand leads you out to a Venetian fortress on an islet. Discover resort towns like the charming and charismatic Agios Nikolaos perched dramatically over the stunning curves of Mirabello Bay and beguiling Chania with its breathtaking backdrop of the towering White Mountains, which are snow-capped for half the year. Meanwhile, the near-deserted islet of Chrissi beckons visitors with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and Europe’s largest Lebanon cedar forest. Book your  flights to Heraklion  or  flights to Chania  today.

Crete holiday FAQs

  • Tucked away in the south west corner of Crete, far away from any tourist resorts, sits Elafonissi Beach, a natural island which turns into a peninsula at low tide reached via a thin strip of sand. The pale sandy beach has a pinkish tint due to the seashells deposited there and safe, lagoon-like, shallow turquoise waters. The area is a protected conservation zone because of the endangered sea turtles that nest there. Strong winds make it a popular spot for kitesurfers and the beach also attracts naturists.
  • The monumental Palace of Knossos was finished in 1450 BC as the seat of the Minoan civilisation and its kings. The vast complex, Crete’s largest archaeological site, is divided into three wings. The west wing holds the throne room, while the east wing contains the royal chambers, the double axes room, the queen's megaron with dolphin frescos and the stone carver’s workshop. Outside don’t miss the lustral basin and the theatre.
  • Seitan Limania Beach is a remote spot on the Akrotiri peninsula. With its dramatic location wedged between a high canyon leading out to the sea it’s one of Crete’s most Instagram-worthy beaches. The surrounding high cliffs create a sheltered environment perfect for swimming. The sand and pebble beach with brilliant blue waters is small so fills up swiftly in high season, though a steep hike down to it populated by goats tends to deter some visitors.
  • The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is one of Greece’s most important museums and the world’s leading centre for Minoan antiquities. Exhibits include items dating from the Neolithic Age to Roman times. There’s ceramic art, stone carvings, micro-sculptures, paintings and much more, with most items created in the Minoan period and discovered in palaces, buildings, settlements, tombs, temples and caves.
  • The Old Venetian Port of Chania is one of the oldest parts of the town. Built from 1320 to 1356, it was one of the most important Mediterranean trade centres. Take in the striking 16th Century lighthouse that’s guarded the harbour for centuries and visit the 17th Century Ottoman Yali Mosque, which houses an important cultural collection. Another notable building is the Grand Arsenal which now houses the Center for Mediterranean Architecture. Once you’re done with sightseeing you can shop and then enjoy a bite in one of the many fine restaurants lining the port.
  • With its graceful golden stone facade, the Arkadi Monastery is one of the finest Venetian churches on Crete. Built in 1587 and extended during the 1600s, it became one of the most important centres of resistance against the Turks during the 19th Century, especially during the 1866 rebellion when hundreds of people perished in a siege of the building. You can still see a shell from the siege embedded in the trunk of an ancient cypress tree in the grounds.
  • The imposing Venetian Fortezza Castle stands proud on a hill outside Rethymno. The fortress is so large that the entire population of the town could fit inside. The vast armoury building is now used for exhibitions and cultural events. In the central square is the Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim, which was originally a Christian Orthodox Cathedral. The 20th Century Theatre of Erofili hosts many cultural events during summer. Outside the castle lies a pentagonal fort that now houses the archaeological relics recovered from the city. There are lovely views out over the city and harbour from the bastion of Agios Nikolaos.
  • The bustling seaside town of Elounda is Crete’s luxury five-star resort. Situated north of Agios Nikolaos this indented coastline boasts picturesque beaches and crystal-clear waters. The colourful harbour and main square are at the heart of the action – with plenty of authentic Greek tavernas and friendly bars. There is also a lot to do and see in this area – visit the island of Spinalonga, walk along the peninsula of Kolokytha or explore the tiny villages.
  • Fly into Chania’s international airport and you'll explore the undiscovered north west side of Crete. The area has a growing number of top-rated hotels and people come to seek a quiet, luxurious stay. The old town of Chania is known for its historic Venetian port. Chania is also great for explorers: south of the city lies the famous Samaria Gorge. Spend a day hiking through this geological marvel and discover the wilder side of the island.
  • Traditional and charming, Agios Nikolaos combines three waterfronts – the legendary lake, the beach at Kitroplatia and a marina. Its sleepy feel and slower pace provide a delightful contrast to the vibrant neighbouring resorts of Malia and Hersonissos. But the bustling cafeterias, charming coffeehouses and traditional taverns provide a buzz that is hard to resist – you’ll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy Cretan “mesedes”. The area’s thriving art scene is visible at the intimate open-air theatre, summer cinema and in its shops selling traditional Cretan handicrafts.
  • One of Crete’s most bustling areas, Hersonissos is a popular holiday choice. Famed for its lively nightlife, the harbour area provides an array of restaurants, bars and clubs. You’ll also find lovely beaches and a modern town with plenty of shopping and dining on offer. It’s a family-friendly resort – kids will love the water parks. Make sure you enjoy a ride on the Happy Train, which takes you along the Crete coastline.
  • With an evident flavour of ‘old Greece’, Rethymno charms visitors with its narrow maze of streets, local arts and crafts, and beautiful Venetian harbour. Effortlessly combining the old and the new – this quaintness is contrasted by the new town, which brings the area into the modern day. The long sandy beach stretches for miles towards the east and is lined with hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Boasting a great location and good choice of accommodation, its resort complexes are ideal for relaxing beach holidays.
  • The capital of Crete, Heraklion, provides a convenient gateway. Fly into its airport and you’ll be a stone's throw from Malia and Agios Nikolaos. A great starting point for your Greek island adventure, this bustling city boasts rich history, great shopping and an abundance of bars, cafes and restaurants. The Venetian harbour still houses the fortress of Koules and the old city, locked within Venetian walls, has expanded around Byzantine churches, Venetian mansions and Turkish fountains.
  • Probably best known for its exuberant nightlife, Malia is a hotspot for young clubbers especially in the summer months. Bursting with bars and clubs, the resort comes alive at night and doesn’t dwindle until the early hours. This frenzied nocturnal scene is offset by the unexpected charm of the old town with its narrow streets, intimate tavernas and traditional bougainvillea-fronted houses. Hotels in nearby Stalis allow you to experience the vibrancy of Malia, without staying in the heart of the action.
  • Perhaps you’re dreaming of luxury hotels on Crete.  Nana Princess Hotel  near the lively town of Hersonissos offers a private beach with individual gazebos where drinks and snacks can be ordered at the touch of a button, two large outdoor swimming pools and a raft of five-star amenities including its own water park.
  • Got your heart set on a Cretan family holiday? Book into  Grecotel LUX ME White Palace , an all-inclusive hotel with a difference. The minimalist hotel with its enviable beachfront location in Pigianos Kampos even has its own gelateria, creperie and chocolaterie to delight discerning families.
  • Finally, when it comes to adult-only hotels in Crete consider the  Domes Noruz Chania, Autograph Collection . This luxury boutique property offers a glamorous beachfront location, secluded rooms with private pools and upscale dining options.
