Best African safari books – Wildlife & travel guides

African safari guide teaching about wildlife in his book

Looking for the best safari guidebooks to inspire your next vacation? The following compilation features some of the top African safari books and travel guides that’ll help you level up your safari experience.

This list of safari guidebooks was handpicked by the Africa Freak community and our experienced editorial team.

All you need to do is pick the best African wildlife books for your trip and remember to add them to your African safari packing list .

Let’s dive in!

Top African Animal Books

  • Larger Animals of East Africa (Collins Safari Guides) (Paperback) by David Hosking & Martin B. Withers .

This is one of the first safari guidebooks I ever bought. The classic African safari field guide to large African wildlife is a great starting point for budding safari enthusiasts.

Larger Animals of East Africa was written by two wildlife experts with over 20 years of experience leading safaris in East Africa . It covers an impressive 76 species and boasts around 200 color photographs.

– What I love about the book : Great illustrations, key facts, distribution, habits, conservation, and status. Very easy to use.

– Criticism : The edition is considerably outdated as it was published in 1997. A refresher could only be beneficial to this quality item.

NB : For a similar but more up-to-date animal guide, consider buying Wildlife of East Africa by Martin B. Withers & David Hosking .

  • The Behavior Guide to African Mammals (Paperback) by Richard D. Estes .

This African animals book is a popular favorite amongst the Africa Freak editorial team, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants to learn more than the physical characteristics of African mammals.

The unique African safari guide compiles many years of fieldwork and research into the behavior of African mammals .

Whether you’re an amateur naturalist or closer to an expert, you’re sure to find this safari guide informative and handy. This guide, beautifully illustrated by Daniel Otte , delves deep into animal behavior and much more.

– What we love about the book : It’s very informative and features detailed illustrations. This safari guidebook is a great African safari companion for amateurs and experts.

– Criticism : This safari guide is harder to read than most guides due to its academic nature.

  • Serengeti: Natural Order on the African Plain (Hardcover) by Mitsuaki Iwago .

I will always remember the day I first got this book from my parents. I was only 5 or 6 at the time, but it is perhaps the one book that truly made me fall in love with Africa and its extraordinary wildlife.

Mitsuaki Iwago is more than just a photographer. He is an artist. While this isn’t exactly a guide, it’s a fantastic book to have for every African safari enthusiast.

Serengeti by Mitsuaki Iwago is a compilation of stunning photography that makes for the perfect coffee table read and conversation starter.

– What I love about the book : Published in 1987, it’s a classic compilation of brilliant photography.

– Criticism : This animals of Africa book doesn’t offer much more than wildlife and landscape imagery, as well as photographic inspiration.

  • Signs of the Wild (Paperback) by Clive Walker .

Signs of the Wild: A Field Guide to the Spoor & Signs of the Mammals of Southern Africa is my “bible” when it comes to field guides for Southern Africa.

Anyone who has spent some time in the African wilderness knows that animal sightings often start with spoor , tracks , and small signs .

This handy guide contains insightful information on animal identification , distribution maps , and color photographs of Southern African mammals.

Here are some of the features that make this guide absolutely special:

– The environmental glossary for key terms and definitions.

– Stunning illustrations for each species.

– Concise descriptions and distribution maps.

–  Animal names translation into the main local languages: Afrikaans, Shona, Ndebele, Zulu, Siswati, Venda, Tswana/Sotho, and Nama/Damara.

– What I particularly like about the book : feces and spoor sections (illustrated) + comparative spoor illustrations.

  • The Safari Companion: A Guide to Watching African Animals (Paperback) by Richard D. Estes .

The most complete guide to watching African mammals. This incredible guide has it all, including behavioral displays of species (territorial marking, aggression, courtship rituals), illustrations , extensive maps , wildlife photography tips , and vegetation zones .

It is one of the best African safari guides for anyone who wants to understand a little more about African mammals. Safari experts will love the black-and-white illustrations and detailed information.

– What I love about the book : The beautiful illustrations and comprehensive information.

– Criticism : This volume can get a little too technical and lacks color photography. It’s also fairly robust and isn’t easy to travel with.

  • Game Ranger in Your Backpack (Paperback) by Megan Emmett & Sean Pattrick .

If you’re going on an African wilderness excursion without a safari tour guide, this is a fantastic safari guide book to take with you. Game Ranger in Your Backpack is a practical and interpretive identification guide for wildlife in South Africa’s Lowveld.

Our editorial team loves this book for its valuable information on mammals , reptiles , birds , amphibians , plants and flowers , and more. If you’re planning an African self-drive safari , this guide is worth getting.

– What we love about this book : Game Ranger in Your Backpack is easy to read, and it includes color-coded chapters and hundreds of stunning pictures.

– Criticism : The book was published in 2011 and could use a revision only because it’s such a great African tour guide substitute.

  • A Photographic Guide to Tracks and Tracking in Southern Africa (Paperback) by Louis Liebenberg .

Everyone from first-time safari-goers to experienced guides could use this African safari field guide on tracking animals in Southern Africa.

This handy photographic guide is filled with insightful images and detailed information that makes tracking easier.

It works well as a reference to pass around on group safaris , a self-drive safari companion , and a refresher for experienced guides.

Like many African wildlife books, the guide comes with distribution maps to illustrate where each species is found in southern Africa.

– What we love about this book : The photographs of droppings and tracks are handy, and the distribution guide provides valuable information.

– Criticism : While this guide is still valuable to have, we’d love to see an update, especially on the distribution maps. Much has changed since the book’s publication in 2001.

  • Tracker Manual (Paperback) by Alex van den Heever , Renias Mhlongo & Karel Benadie .

Tracker Manual is one of the most recently published African wildlife books that focuses on tracking animals in southern Africa.

This safari guidebook provides practical information on tracking around 160 African animals , compiled by industry experts.

Written to be an on-the-go guide, the manual features excellent color photos and simple bulleted text , as well as detailed descriptions for more in-depth information.

– What we love about this book : Tracker Manual is easy to read and offers accessible information for levels of safari fans.

Best Safari Guides on Birding

  • Roberts Bird Guide (Paperback) by Hugh Chittenden , Greg Davies & Ingrid Weiersbye .

Roberts Bird Guide is the ultimate compilation of information on birds in southern Africa. This African guide covers 1000 bird species through photographs and illustrations accompanied by detailed information to make identification easy.

– What we love about this book : It is one of the best African safari books on birding, and is suited for both amateurs and experts.

  • Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa (Paperback) by Norman Arlott (Author), Phil Hockey (Author), Ian Sinclair (Author) & Peter Hayman (Illustrator).

This book is similar to one of the earlier versions (which I have) but is completely revised and updated to include bird species name changes , distribution maps , and revised bird taxonomy .

– Criticism : It is fairly large and hard to carry around when birding in the wilderness.

  • Birds of Southern Africa (Princeton Field Guides) (Paperback) by Ian Sinclair (Author), Phil Hockey (Author), Warwick Tarboton (Author), Peter Hayman (Illustrator) & Norman Arlott (Illustrator).

This impressive guide features around 950 beautiful species of African birds  and over 4000 illustrations by experts. While it’s a fairly old publication (2002), it’s still a great reference for birding in southern Africa.

– What we love about this book : The guide is written by ornithologists and beautifully illustrated. It’s also easy to carry around and has a glossy cover to resist water splashes.

NB : For birds of East Africa, the fully revised and updated new edition (2020) is worth checking out too.

Safari Tales

  • Don’t Look Behind You! : A Safari Guide’s Encounters with Ravenous Lions, Stampeding Elephants, and Lovesick Rhinos by Peter Allison .
“The best compliment you can pay a travel writer is to read his work and feel like you’re right there with him. For more than two hundred pages, I felt like I was in Africa, up to my neck in danger. I don’t even know this guy, but more than once I lay awake at night, worrying for his safety. Enough adventure, action, life lessons, and laughs to fill a movie and four sequels. The fact that Allison survived to write any of this down is a miracle in itself.” — Cash Peters, author of “Gullible’s Travels”.
  • Whatever You Do, Don’t Run : True Tales of a Botswana Safari Guide (Paperback) by Peter Allison .
“His misadventures make Whatever You Do, Don’t Run an absorbing read… The material is rich, and Allison is a gifted storyteller. And the only thing stranger than African fiction is African truth.” — National Geographic Adventure “After reading this entrancing memoir, an African safari may move to No. 1 on your travel wish list. The only catch is you’ll want the author as your guide.” — Chicago Sun-Times

September 2014

As soon as I saw this book I was super excited! There are 27 brilliant patterns held in this book. You even get the pattern for the safari mat they go on. Even if you are new to knitting you should be able to give the set a go. They are knitted flat and then sewn together at the end. There are step by step instructions for each stage of making your animal. Even the putting together of the animals is explained. There are easy to follow pictures and instructions that start you on your way.

Knit your very own safari park like the ones you see in wildlife documentaries. There is every creature you would expect to see plus a mat to put it all on and even a couple of vehicles to visit the park. All you need is a ranger

Or a child to play with it all, or some guests to admire it. This truly is a great way of using up all that leftover yarn and as the items are all small (apart from the mat) you can do a bit in between larger projects. This book does not teach knitting, but the author advises you to start with the mat if you are a knitting newbie as you can practise all the basic stitches (just plain knit and purl) you will need to make the animals. There are twenty-seven of these, most with young and none need a lot of knitting or toymaking know-how. All you need to start are a few basic bits and pieces a book after my own heart as I am always complaining that so many craft books involve a major shopping spree before you can make anything. Choose from elephant, meerkat, giraffe, panda, crocodile, tiger and my favorites penguin and polar bear ( the last two are ideal for the Christmas tree). There are some less common creatures here too like a gorgeous vulture, impala and giant turtle plus a camper van, off roader and an arched gateway. Each pattern is in written form with photos of the finished creature (usually on white so you can see detail and posed with an appropriate background). Size is given, plus what you need and a difficulty level. This is an attractive and user-friendly book that would make a great gift if you can bear to part with it and is sure to give knitters of all abilities a lot of fun.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

safari mini book

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

The Second Coming of the Austin Mini

The original Mini is 60 years old. Some of its most ardent fans aren't even half that age.

mini

Every car has its moment. For the Austin Mini, that moment was the swinging '60s, rock 'n' roll and mini-skirts and an impossibly tiny economy car four-wheel sliding through corners, taking down giants. Cheap and cheerful, the Mini was a car for the youth. But youth is fleeting, and tastes change. The Mini should have faded from popular culture, relegated to collector status, displayed, not driven. But it hasn't.

Don't call it a comeback, as for some people the Mini never really went away. However, these days something particularly unique is happening with Mini culture. The age of the people involved is basically the same as in the 1960s.

You can thank Japan. While the Mini left the U.S. market some 50 years ago, the little icon has suddenly found itself big in Japan. A couple of years ago, I found myself in Osaka, pulling up to a shop that had at least 30 original Minis clustered around it, a mix ranging from spec racing machines to Honda-swapped hot-rods. According to some of the local fans I spoke to there, Minis were consistently the top foreign import into the Japanese market as the original model soldiered on, and in fact Japan continues to be the largest market for the Mini brand today.

That means there's a huge reservoir of late-model original Minis just waiting to be tucked into a shipping container alongside the Skylines and Silvias that are heading for our shores. It means plentiful parts, a huge aftermarket, and all sorts of aesthetic and performance modifications to try out. Suddenly, the Austin Mini and Morris Mini-Minor have become the car for people in their 20s and 30s, heavily modified or backdated, blowing up on Instagram, clustering together for urban cruises or heading out onto the backroads for long distance drives. To see why, we spoke to some local owners in Vancouver about their love of this little car.

mini

R&T: Tell us about your car.

It's got the original 1275-cc A-Series engine that’s been reworked to run a Haltech standalone ECU. I bought the car on a whim in 2016 when I was casually browsing Craigslist. I wasn’t looking for a car but went to see it anyway. A bit of back and forth with the seller and I left with a car.

R&T: What do you love about it?

My Mini has been the link to many adventures and people I now know. It’s brought me to Japan for Mini Day with Phil and Niko from Steveston Motor Co. , whom I only knew for a couple months, as well as down countless roads I would never go to without it. The Mini is probably the most social car ever because everyone knows what it is, has a story about one, or wants to take a picture of it.

mini

R&T: Any future plans?

I usually drive my car around town in the evening or weekend but have used it daily a few times over the years in its minimalistic state–bucket seats and no radio or HVAC. A few times a year I take it on out of town trips like the Spring Thaw or camping trips down forest service roads. The jobs on my to-do list are: pull the engine to rebuild the gearbox (again), install a hotter camshaft, and change to a bigger throttle body. A concept my friends and I joke around with is converting it to a safari Mini like people do with older Porsche 911s.

1994 Rover Mini

mini

My Mini is inspired by Japanese Mark I Minis of the 1960s. I love the look of the original Mini from the 60s, specifically the interior and the front end. The beautiful curved "mustache" chrome work on the grille, and the simplistic dashboard with center gauges is my favorite part of the Mark I Mini. These cars are such an important part of automotive history and I feel they need to be preserved.

I drive the Mini on the weekends when I want to go for a cruise for the day, and sometimes before or after work for a quick cruise around the neighborhood. This car is my escape from the daily grind. When I am driving my Mini, nothing else matters and I am living in the moment.

mini

To rebuild a Honda D16Z6 engine that I have, and then swap that into the Mini. I am planning on building the car to the FIA's Appendix K Race Standard (with the exception of the Honda swap) as outlined in the book How to Prepare a Historic Racing Mini . The engine rebuild on the D16Z6 has already begun and will take me well into winter of 2020.

1990 Mini Cooper RSP

mini

RSP stands for Rover Special Project. It's like the M division for Rover Mini. 1990 was the first year that Rover brought the Cooper line back to life. I've owned this Mini for 13 years, since 2007.

I have been a fan of Mini since 1995. Basically my first encounter with the Mini was from the Japanese anime City Hunter . The tiny size and the agility of the Mini in the anime drew my attention. I love the fact that you can throw the Mini into a corner like a go-kart, and go flying through narrow laneways like nobody’s business.

mini

I used to use this Mini as my summertime sunny day driver, both to and from work and for pleasure driving. But after obtaining a collector plate, the Mini is purely for pleasure use and driving to cars and coffee.

John Haddon 180 Austin Mini Estate 1978 Austin Mini Pickup

mini

R&T: Tell us about your cars.

I have owned these Minis for almost 10 years—10 years of blood, sweat, and many tears. The Estate was fitted with a Zeemax body kit with wide arches to cover the 13-by-7-inch wheels, which do a fairly decent job of handling the 250 hp generated by the turbocharged Honda D16 powerplant. The Pickup is much tamer. It has a full heritage body panel restoration and was fitted with more modern internal hinged doors with roll-up windows, tartan interior, and a 1.3-liter fuel-injected motor and air-conditioning. Ten-inch SSR wheels complete the JDM theme.

R&T: What do you love about them?

What I love about Mini ownership is that every show you go to brings out unique modifications and styles of Minis—no two seem to be alike. Mini ownership seems to encourage creativity, and to me, making your classic Mini your own is the best part of the hobby.

mini

Next project is for the Mini Pickup to receive a power upgrade. The 1.3-liter is coming out and being replaced by a supercharged 1380-cc motor with a Jack Knight five-speed with straight-cut gears and a limited-slip. Nothing beats rolling hot into a corner and not having to slow down.

Jeremy Brown 1961 Morris Mini-Minor

mini

It's a modified 1961 Morris Mini, powered by a B18C5 type R. My parents call it Morris, but it's "Mo" to its friends.

When I was in high school, I used to sneak onto this large property, sort of an extended back yard behind a house, to sit in the old cars the owner kept there. One time there was a really old Mini, with slider windows and external hinges. I fell in love immediately, and eventually bought it for $500. It was a rescue animal. We got it to turn over and run long enough to get it into [our] back yard, and then it died. That was in the year 2000. It sat for years. But then everything changed.

mini

I was at work in early 2019 and my dad called. He'd just gotten news that he'd been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. I hung up and had a quick cry in a side office, then went to see my builder on my lunch break. I said if I can get the money, would he be able to finish it for my dad's 70th birthday, about six weeks away. Nineteen years after driving it on the grass at my parent's house, I drove it for only the second time on the grass of Queen Elizabeth Park, for the All-British Field Meet.

Dad came down for the show, and honestly, I don't think he'd be more excited if I had an actual child. He only refers to it as Morris, never "the car" or anything normal, and generally treats it like his grandchild. These days dad is doing well. He responded really well to treatment and the initially grim prognosis has since reversed and he's on the mend.

I love so many things about Minis. I was a small kid growing up, so small cars immediately appealed to me. It's hard to be in a bad mood and drive the Mini. Everyone you see smiles and waves, and kids absolutely love it. It's like driving around in a big puppy.

mini

I still live in Vancouver so I don't drive a ton, but the car is great for bombing around town, and it's been really great on road trips to the island, the interior and the States—but ear plugs are a must. Have I mentioned how patient my girlfriend is? We just got a bike rack for it, so I'm excited to look even more ridiculous ripping down the highway. As for future plans, I recently read you can connect a [Honda] CR-V drivetrain to a B-series engine and make a Mini AWD, so...

There are dozens and dozens of stories like these. Local shops like the Steveston Motor Co. provide support for unique builds. They've recently moved into a shared space with Adam Trinder, a machinist whose mid-engine Kawasaki-powered build remains one of the wildest Mini projects we've ever seen . Clubs like Matchbox Mini , championed by owners like Felix Yuen , help keep old Minis invigorated with young blood, with new owners drawn into the Mini lifestyle.

mini

Thus, more than a half-century after it debuted, the appeal of the Austin/Morris Mini is still fresh. It's a scrapper, a terrier and a terror, half garden-gnome and half Braveheart. Thanks to a shot in the arm from young enthusiasts, it's as beloved as ever.

Some cars get one chance to shine. Some bask in faded glory. Love for the Mini is as strong as it has ever been. This little car's moment is still right now.

How to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac

safari mini book

There are a handful of situations when clearing Safari’s cookies or cache–one of the places where Safari stores website data to avoid having to download it afresh each time you access a site–can help improve your browsing experience.

The first is when websites simply stop working when you access them on Safari. Perhaps Facebook stops updating with new posts, for example, or the images on a site don’t appear as they should. If this happens, it’s likely the cache has become corrupted.

Alternatively, if you find that personal info automatically completed on sites isn’t correct, deleting cookies can help. These are small files that sites use to save data about you and what you do on the site.

Even if none of these problems affect you, periodically cleaning browser data can help protect your privacy from snoops who want to discover what you’ve been up to online. In this article, therefore, we explain how to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac.

We also have an article that explains How to clear cache on a Mac.

How to clear Safari cookies and cache for websites

Cleaning cookies and the cache data for individual sites can be done via Safari’s Settings/Preferences.

  • Open Safari
  • Click on Safari in the menu at the top of the screen.
  • Click on Settings or Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
  • Go to the Privacy tab.
  • Click on Manage Website Data…
  • Choose Remove All or select websites individually to remove.

After the data is loaded you’ll probably see a long list of websites. You can choose to Remove All or just select individual websites you want to remove from this list. If you want to select a number of different sites you can click on one and then press and hold the Command key to select a second, third or fourth and so on. We recommend that you don’t select hundreds this way – it’s better to delete in batches just in case you have to start over.

If you would prefer to select all and then deselect the ones you want to keep you can do so. Use Command + A to select all, then press and hold Command while clicking on any website you are happy to keep in this list. Just click Remove afterwards, not Done, as that will just undo all your hard work.

There’s a search field you can use to track down individual sites.

Bear in mind that deleting cookies might remove autocompleted login usernames and passwords for sites, and will almost certainly log you out of that site if you’ve configured it to automatically log in each time you visit.

How to clear Safari's cache and history on Mac: Privacy

How to clear Safari cache

The hidden Safari Developer menu can be used to clear just the cache, leaving cookies and the browser history in place. This is a very useful diagnostic step to take before removing those two items if a website behaves badly.

If you just want to clear all your cache you can do so by following these steps:

  • Open Safari.
  • Click on Safari in menu bar at top of screen.
  • Click on Settings/Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
  • Click on the Advanced tab.
  • Check the box beside Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar.
  • Now there will be a new Develop tab in the menu at the top of your screen. Click on this.
  • Click on Empty Caches.

Alternatively click on Option/Alt + Command + E.

Close any open Safari windows and select Empty Caches on the Develop menu. Then click File > New Window to start Safari with a clean cache.

How to remove autocomplete data from AutoFill

Safari’s AutoFill tool can fill in username and password details on websites as well as credit card details and other elements like your address and email details.

This can be really useful, but it can also be annoying if the data it fills in is incorrect or out of context. It’s also a problem when AutoFill helpfully enters old or incorrect passwords or emails and addresses.

You can change this data, or delete it by following these steps:

  • Click on Safari.
  • Click on Settings/Preferences.
  • Choose the AutoFill tab.
  • Here you can edit contact information, usernames and passwords, credit cards and other data. Click on Edit beside the category you want access to.
  • You’ll need to enter your password or use Touch ID to gain access.

Delete incorrect data: If you are finding that Safari is autofilling incorrect data about you–your address, for example–click Edit beside Using information from my contacts. This will open up your Contacts app. Your card will be at the top or under My Card. You can add and amend data about you here.

How to clear Safari's cache and history on Mac: Autofill

Delete incorrect passwords and site logins: If you wanted to delete incorrect passwords, for example, you can just click on the Passwords tab. If you know which password you want to remove search for the website or service and then find the older password option (if there is more than one) and select it and then click on the – below the column to remove it. You can then select Delete Password. If that means there is no password saved for that website, you can then recreate the entry for the site by clicking the Add button. You’ll first need to provide the URL of the site (that is, something like https://facebook.com ), and then type the username and password alongside (hit the Tab key to move from field to field).

See: How to autofill passwords, bank cards, names and addresses for more.

How to clear Safari's cache and history on Mac: Site logins

Delete logins and passwords system-wide

Pruning site logins can also be done via the Keychain Access app, which you’ll find in the Utilities folder of the Applications list in Finder, although you should be very careful using this app because it pretty much controls the entire security operation of your Mac! However, by removing errant username and password entries here you’ll stop virtually all of your Mac apps using them, and not just Safari.

Just type the name of the site into the Search field, and look in the list of results for entries of the kind Web Form Password. Right-click the entry and select Delete.

Changing password keychain Mac

If you want to delete your Chrome or Firefox cache, cookies or browsing history read: How to delete your Mac browsing history . For alternative web browsers take a look at: Best web browser for Mac.
