Alaska Glaciers

One of the biggest reasons people visit.

Glaciers feel alive. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.

On a cruise to Alaska, live a nature lover's dream in the land where guests can catch postcard-worthy sights.

Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent. Meanwhile, Glacier Bay National Park has over 2,000 square miles of glacial coverage. Along with Wrangell-St. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.

Hubbard Glacier

Two men taking a photos of hubbard glacier on Alaska cruise

The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean. What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. See it for yourself on an Alaska cruise with Princess.

Dramatic Landscapes

The wonders of the old world exist in perpetuity here, taking the form of old growth forest, with towering evergreens and moss-covered earth.  Perhaps the frozen immensity of glaciers will capture the eye, housing secrets and nestled in the carved fjords, demonstrating the raw power of Mother Nature.

Wild Encounters

Alaska remains one of the most extreme and ecologically rich places on the planet, home to some of the largest birds, bears, and aquatic life.  The skies are filled with the calls of the marvelous Bald Eagle; the water parts for other dwellers, as whales and countless other marine species call this passage home.

Bucket-list Experiences

The waters, the lands, the skies - there's no shortage of landscapes to experience in Alaska. Kayak through misty fjords; embark upon glacial masses in a zodiac or seaplane; indulge in oysters straight from ocean to table. Then retire to your ocean-front suite and marvel in the sweeping views of "The Last Frontier."

Alaska Cruises in June

June is considered by many to be the best month to cruise to Alaska , thanks to long, bright days and generally fine weather. Alaskan summers are a magical time of year, when life is flourishing; meadows are in bloom, and the foliage on the trees is dense. Days are generally warm and dry, with up to 18 hours of daylight to accompany you on any of your adventures ashore. On an Alaska cruise in June, you’ll embark from either Seattle, Seward, or Vancouver, depending on your itinerary, and sail for seven nights.

These scenic summer cruises will take you through unspoiled natural splendor to the mighty Dawes Glacier and Hubbard Glacier, the state capital of Juneau, and much more. Take in the forested islands and rocky shores of the Inside Passage, or fly over the forest by zipline at Icy Strait Point. Ride the vintage railway in Skagway, and visit the salmon capital of the world in Ketchikan. You’ll find adv

Itineraries

Highlights of an alaska cruise in june, summer salmon season.

June is approaching the peak of Alaska’s salmon spawning season, and this provides incredible opportunities to both see and taste this famous wild fish. Where there are salmon, bears come to feast, so the chances of a bear sighting are better than ever around Alaska’s rivers and creeks. At Ketchikan, known as Salmon Capital of the World, you’ll see rivers dense with silver fish forcing their way upstream. You’ll also find options to visit historic salmon canneries and learn about the intricate economic and cultural ties salmon fishing has within Alaska’s culture.

Maximum Daylight Hours

June is when the days are longest in Alaska, which means you’ll have plenty of time to spend outdoors on excursions, exploring ports, or simply enjoying the sunlight on deck. With up to 18 hours of daylight, this is the optimum time for float plane rides, soaring over vast glaciers and snowy peaks. Wildlife is active, and you could spot seal pups and bear cubs. Denali National Park is fully open and waiting to be explored. Receding snow on the mountains means you can hike higher, and for longer, sailing schedules permitting.

Living History

Though known the world over for its majestic natural splendor, Alaska also offers plenty of incredible historic sites, museums, and monuments to the past. On an Alaska cruise, you’ll walk through living history in preserved pioneer towns like Ketchikan, where you’ll find the largest collection of totems in the world. In Skagway, explore the old railway from the 19th-century gold rush that once brought prospectors from the coast to the Canadian Yukon. Experience Native culture and hospitality at Hoonah, Icy Strait Point, Alaska’s largest Native Tlingit village.

Spring travel season is in full bloom for Alaskans looking to travel in state

alaska cruises in june 2023

Although the summertime cruise season officially started last week in Southeast Alaska, it’s a little early here on the Railbelt between Seward and Fairbanks. There’s still plenty of snow, and the tripod on the Nenana River is still standing tall.

Even so, spring specials are popping up all over for Alaskans who cannot wait to go exploring. Just be sure to bring your hat, some gloves and an extra jacket. Or two.

The sightseeing cruises in Seward started up last month. It’s always fun to sail in Resurrection Bay when the snow comes right down to the water. Watch for the critters on the shore and in the water, including the big gray whales and an occasional orca. Bring binoculars so you can see the otters and porpoises up close.

Kenai Fjords Tours offers cruises Thursday-Sunday, departing at noon. The four-hour Resurrection Bay cruises are available through May 16 for as little as $116 per adult. Kids under 12 years old sail free when accompanied by a paying adult (one free child per adult). Lunch is included (chicken burrito).

Major Marine Tours cruises seven days a week during the spring — and offers 25% off a hotel/cruise package through the end of April.

The cruise, which departs at 12:30 p.m. each day, costs $109 per adult. Hotel accommodations at the Harbor 360 are $169 per night, before the discount, port charges, fuel surcharge and local sales tax.

After everything is added on and the discount is applied, the cost for two adults to go on the cruise and stay overnight is $328.64, or $164.32 per person. I didn’t add up the cost for the kids, which is $54.50 per child (ages 2-11).

If you plan your cruise in May or early June (through June 15), Major Marine offers 20% off a hotel/cruise combo at the Gateway Hotel.

Overnight visitors have more time to see the Alaska SeaLife Center. Alaska residents typically can save about $5 off the cost of admission, from $25 to $30 per adult. Admission for kids who live here costs about $15. It’s important to book your tickets online, since the SeaLife Center offers staggered admission.

Alaska residents can trim 30% off the nightly rate at Alyeska Resort. Whether you’re going to ski or soak at the new Nordic Spa, the resort is well-situated. I plugged in some midweek dates to get the best rate: about $228 per room with the discount applied.

[ Here’s what I learned as a frequent flyer on my most recent trip ]

Up in Talkeetna, the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge sits on a bluff overlooking the runway and downtown Talkeetna. It’s got the best view of Denali for miles around. For a couple of years now, the lodge started opening in March for springtime travelers.

Between now and May 5, the lodge offers a 30% discount. Use the promo code “SPRING” when making reservations online at talkeetnalodge.com .

If you love the idea of cruising on the big ships, even when it’s a little chilly outside, there are some great spring rates departing Seward.

Nate Vallier with the Alaska Travel Desk in Juneau is a big cruise fan. He found some particularly good early-season specials, including:

1. Sail on the Norwegian Jewel on April 22 to Vancouver, B.C., in an inside cabin for $199 per person (based on double occupancy). In this case, the port taxes and fees cost more than the cruise: $301 per person. Still, $500 for a seven-day cruise through the Inside Passage is a good deal.

2. Get an outside cabin on the Jewel sailing on May 6 from Seward. The cost is a little more: $309 per person, plus $301 per person for taxes and fees, or $610 total per person, based on two people sharing a cabin.

3. If you want a balcony, Vallier recommends the Celebrity Summit, sailing from Seward on May 17. The cost is $399 per person, plus $383 in taxes and fees, or $782 per person, all in. Vallier picked this particular date because it’s much less than the other sailing dates on the Summit.

All of these cruises end in Vancouver, B.C. Travelers must have a passport. Travelers in May can fly back on Air Canada’s nonstop flight to Anchorage, starting on May 14. Early birds in April can fly via Seattle.

For a more intimate experience on a smaller ship, consider Alaskan Dream Cruises, which sails from Juneau and Sitka on seven- or eight-day itineraries through the Inside Passage.

Cruises between May 12 and June 14 are 49% off for Alaska residents, using the discount code “49FOR49″. You have to call for reservations, since the special prices are not listed on the website: 855-747-8100.

Still, you can check out the itineraries online at alaskandreamcruises.com .

Setting sail with between 40 and 80 passengers, these vessels go where the big ships can’t. One of the earliest cruises on the Alaskan Dream sails into Glacier Bay and calls in Kake, Wrangell, Petersburg and Pelican. With the discount applied, rates start at $2,497 per person, double.

The “Last Frontier Adventure” on either the Admiralty Dream or the Chichagof Dream is a seven-night itinerary that’s a little different, including a visit to the Fords Terror Wilderness area near Tracy Arm. There are four departures between May 18 and June 14, starting at $2,038 per person, double.

There are several itineraries from which to choose, but the Alaska resident pricing details are not available on the website.

Whether you want to hang out in a lodge or cruise on a boat, the spring travel season is in full bloom.

Juneau had a record-breaking cruise season last year. This year should be about the same.

a cruise ship

Juneau’s 2024 cruise ship tourism season is just around the corner as the  first ship of the year  — the Norwegian Bliss — is slated to arrive early Tuesday morning.

Last year, the capital city saw its busiest season ever — welcoming more than 1.6 million passengers. On the busiest days, Juneau welcomed upwards of 21,000 cruise visitors.

Juneau Tourism Manager Alix Pierce said this year likely won’t top last year’s record-breaking season. She expects to see about the same number of visitors.

“I think it will run a lot more smoothly, and things will be better,” she said. “Generally, our tour operators know what to expect. They know what kind of volume to expect, and they’re gearing up and getting ready.”

In a survey conducted last fall, about 64% of Juneau residents said they wanted to keep the local tourism volume about the same or reduce it slightly.

But some major problems did crop up during 2023’s record season — things like heavy  downtown congestion , the Mendenhall Glacier reaching  its tour capacity  and business owners saying it was just hard to keep up.

One big change this year for controlling the traffic will be a new limit of  five large ships  per day.

During a tourism panel on Thursday, Cruise Lines International Association Alaska spokesperson Renee Reeve said that agreement with the city will be key to flattening growth in the coming years.

“I think what that shows is industry’s commitment and CBJs commitment to making this place somewhere that visitors want to visit, and somewhere that the residents want to live,” she said.

A limit on the number of ships does not necessarily mean fewer passengers. But an even bigger change could be coming in 2026. Pierce said the city is in the early stages of negotiating with cruise lines to limit the number of passengers that come off their ships each day.

“The best thing that we can come up with are daily passenger caps to keep our numbers relatively flat or decrease a little bit,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing some of these things come to fruition, and then seeing how it feels in terms of passenger volume, and numbers and what that means for us as a destination.”

Last season, cruise ship passengers spent a total of $320 million in Juneau, according to a  report that came out last fall.  To support that business, it’s estimated that more than 3,000 people in Juneau worked jobs that were directly related to tourism.

Local tour operators faced a tough situation after they sold out on  bus trips to the Mendenhall Glacier  halfway through the season, which meant more tourists stayed downtown.

This year, the city plans to send extra buses to follow the city buses that carry people out to the glacier to handle the overflow. Pierce said local operators are also trying to balance their permits over the season to reduce congestion on buses and downtown.

“They’re offering more city tours that go to other sites where you can see the glacier from elsewhere. So they’re trying to pick up that volume in different ways,” she said.

In April, about one-to-three ships will port in Juneau per week before ramping up to three-to-five ships per day by the latter half of May. Ships will continue to port in Juneau nearly every day before winding down in late October.

And as tourism kicks up for the summer, residents can send in complaints and concerns to the city’s  tourism hotline.

Biden wins Wyoming’s caucuses, with Democrats in Alaska still to get their say in the nomination

President Joe Biden nudged further ahead in the Democratic nomination for reelection by winning the party caucuses in Wyoming and was the only choice on the ballot later Saturday in Alaska .

As two of the least populated states, Alaska and Wyoming play minuscule roles in both intraparty and general election voting in presidential election years.

Biden effectively clinched the Democratic nomination on March 12 with the Georgia primary and is now all but certain to face former President Donald Trump as the Republican nominee in November.

ALASKA Alaska Democrats are holding a voice vote for their party-run preference poll at in-person and virtual district meetings.

Biden’s is the lone candidate eligible to receive votes after the other Democrat to qualify, Dean Phillips, suspended his campaign last month. The vote is being held during meetings where other party business is conducted.

The polling was delayed a week. Democrats had planned a ranked vote election by mail on April 6 but those plans changed when only Biden and Phillips qualified for the ballot and when Phillips suspended his run.

Changes to their plan were approved by the Democratic National Committee.

There were no provisions for write-ins or uncommitted, said Lindsay Kavanaugh, the Alaska party’s executive director.

“There is no option to vote nay,” she said. “You can abstain. You don’t vote yes or no, you vote for a candidate.”

The party proceeded with a vote, even with just one candidate, “to make sure we’re as inclusive as possible,” she said, and to avoid any inference that party leaders were deciding candidates themselves.

Alaska will allocate 15 pledged delegates based on the vote.

WYOMING Biden won in Wyoming, where polling determined which candidate got the state’s 17 national delegates.

The caucuses also decided who goes to the state Democratic convention on June 1 in Casper. There, 13 of Wyoming’s national convention delegates will be chosen.

Wyoming’s other four “automatic” national delegates are the state party chairman, vice chair and two national committee people, who have not yet pledged for Biden or anyone else.

Gruver reported from Cheyenne, Wyoming.
