Road Trip 4 Paws Saving Dogs and Cats in Dallas - Fort Worth

Friday, October 07, 2022 | By: Tracy Allard

I recently started working with a new Dallas - Fort Worth rescue group, Road Trip 4 Paws  (RT4P). They lost their go-to photographer when she retired and moved out of state, leaving them in a bit of a lurch. I'm always happy to help rescues and shelters when needed so I said sure, send your fosters to my Carrollton studio.

Below are images from my third adoption photo shoot for them and I chose this color paper - which I can never remember the exact name of - which I call my "pumpkin spice" paper because it seemed fitting for fall.

Knowing that you rescue animals is all I really need to know to help you, but it was interesting to interview the founder, Kelly Bond, as research to write this post. I was finally able to answer my first burning question, "Why is the rescue called Road Trip 4 Paws?" (keep reading for the answer).

Kelly works for American Airlines as a flight attendant and despite being away from home for a few days at a time, figured out a way to make cat fostering for various north Texas rescues work for fifteen years.

After considering what she liked, and disliked, about those rescues, she decided to create her own group putting to use her experiences and learnings from each. It started with one friend to join her as a foster, and then another joined and from these humble beginnings of three fosters homes in 2015,  Road Trip 4 Paws has grown to almost 80, regularly saving over 300 animals every year.

Haling from Alabama, Kelly has been a life long animal lover saying "There isn't a picture in the family photo album without a dog or cat on my lap". This love of animals comes from her father and she admits that there have been a few fosters who ended up calling her parent's house home.

Kelly's Love For Animals Goes Way Back

Kelly at an early age with a puppy, kelly and friend with a litter of kittens, kelly bond of road trip 4 paws as a young girl holding two puppies, those azaleas are the perfect backdrop for kelly and this cat, road trip 4 paws is born.

When she considered starting her own rescue she boiled it down to; "What's my mission? And how can I achieve it?" It was that point on the horizon that led her to think outside the box and focus on transporting animals from sparsely populated rural areas to more densely inhabited ones, thereby increasing the chances for adoption.

She contacted groups all over the country and ended up partnering with two Colorado rescue groups;  Fort Collins Cat Rescue and All Aboard Dog Rescue (now Bounce Animal Rescue ).

The first three years were spent driving back and forth from Texas to Colorado, sometimes with as many as 50-70 animals in a single transport and Kelly behind the wheel.  Road Trip 4 Paws would pull many animals from Humane Society of Young County, a well-respected shelter in the Texas rescue community, as well as Dallas Animal Services and other, smaller shelters in east Texas. If Kelly was on the road, co-director Jennifer Lay would step up to the plate. In 2016 and 2017, they transported over 1,000 animals to Colorado (that's each year)!

Unfortunately change is inevitable and when one of the Colorado rescue groups split, the number of dogs they could intake went down as well. It was no longer feasible to transport only 10-12 animals that distance. But there's a silver lining, by this point, Road Trip 4 Paws had become well known in the Dallas - Fort Worth metroplex and local adoptions had been steadily increasing. In 2019 they stopped their cross-state transports, but the name stuck.

(Road Trip 4 Paws story continues below)

Using Pet Photography To Help Homeless Animals

Kelly has always prioritized having great pictures of their adoptable pets, she knows how important it is to grab someone's attention who has been scrolling the Internet or Facebook looking for their next furry best friend.

One of her favorite things to say is "Think about this like a dating profile picture, it needs to be good!".

A great photo that conveys personality and clearly shows the pet's markings and size can help an animal get adopted in less time, thereby freeing up that foster home to take in another another animal.

This sweet little guy found himself at the San Benito municipal animal shelter in southern Texas where volunteer Jacqueline Pope thought he would do better - and get the medical help he needed to address his eye problems - with a rescue group.

In stepped the Bare Bus Rescue Transport. Every Monday Bare Bus transports shelter animals from sparsely populated areas in the southern part of our state to rescue partners in the DFW metroplex.

Within 24 hours of Popeye's pictures hitting the internet, he had 4 adoption applications and is now living his best life in tony enclave of Highland Park. It's happy endings like this that makes working with rescues so worthwhile.

Mama Izzie And Her Grey's Anatomy Puppies

Izzie is another southern girl who made the trek north to the Dallas area with her puppies. Whether she actually belonged to the owners of the house under which she gave birth to her puppies, or she was a stray who thought it a safe place to do so, is unknown.

She was noticed by a Good Samaritan neighbor who brought the situation to the attention of the home owner who said he didn't care what she did with Izzie and the pups, so the shelter reached out to Ginny Reyes, a key player in the San Benito area rescue community. Ginny reached out Kelly and it was arranged for Izzie and the pups to make the trip to Dallas on the Bare Bus Rescue Transport, allowing them to skip any time in a shelter (which is not place for very young pups).

They just came available for adoption and their pictures are breaking the internet, garnering multiple applications for adoption along the way.

Kelly described Ginny as the woman who "touches" almost 90% of the dogs that Road Trip 4 Paws receives from the San Benito area. Ginny know everybody and she uses those contacts to transport, transfer and place homeless animals.

She provides veterinary care prior to transport. Every effort is made to keep the animals safe, healthy and to give them the best chance at finding a permanent home. Living in north Texas, I'm very familiar with many local rescue groups, shelters and the "movers and shakers" in our area, but researching this post really opened my eyes to how much is being done in other parts of the state as well.

Izzie, a terrier-mix dog available for adoption from Road Trip 4 Paws

Izzie's scruffy good looks are too adorable, izzie looks up, hopeful to find her furever home soon, road trip 4 paws is committed to cat rescue.

Kelly stated that "Cats don't get adopted at the same pace that dogs do, and because many household cats are finicky about who they're willing to share their house with, cat fosters can be hard to find".

She goes on to inform that "With a $150 adoption fee for a cat, we lose money on almost every single one. Cats pulled from municipal shelters often have upper respiratory infections, or gastrointestinal infections requiring medical treatment. Ringworm is another common ailment and because of the need to quarantine, can take a foster home "off the market" for weeks until the animal can safely be made available for adoption".

Despite the downside,  RT4P has always, and will always according to Kelly, rescue cats along with dogs. This is great news because there is a dearth of cat rescues here in north Texas. Kelly likes to say "We may get the glory for what we do when an animal gets adopted, but it's the foster homes that make the whole thing work". Fosters give their time, love and home (and sometimes their own personal finances), without payment, to help save homeless animals.

This is why fundraising is so important for rescue groups, they're integral to the overall rescue ecosystem. A municipal shelter in a rural area may not have the budget to treat minor medical problems for a perfectly adoptable pet. Just think about your last trip to the vet for your pet, now multiply that by 20 or 30. Donations are a lifeline to rescue groups like  Road Trip 4 Paws and others.

Ron and his sibling Harry below - at least we think they're related, they came into the rescue together - were lucky enough to be taken in by Murphys Safe Haven where they got the initial vet care they needed before heading north to Dallas in the hopes of finding their forever homes.

Murphys Safe Haven  is pretty special, it was created and is managed by Audrey, a teenager who has dedicated her love, time and home to rescuing kittens that likely would not have a chance without her. By the age of 13, she had already saved almost 550 kittens.

The name Murphys Safe Haven is in dedication of one of her foster kittens that passed, Murphy. He was a little black kitten that her family rescued with his brother Wolfie back in 2017. Murphy never grew because he had dwarfism and they became deeply attached to him because of his special needs. The family had planned to adopt to adopt him, but he tragically passed away before they got the chance to finalize his adoption. He is the kitten that started it all and has been Audrey's motivation to keep on going.

Ron wasn't ready for his 15-minutes of fame, so I brought in a basket to help him feel secure

Ron's blue eyes are mesmerizing, once he felt comfortable, he started showing himself more, his coat is beautiful, baloo and mowgli.

Baloo (the gray kitten) and Mowgli (the Siamese mix) were transported from the Laredo municipal shelter after being surrendered. They were quite sick and needed a quiet home and medical treatment to recover and become the playful boys you see in the images below.

Every three to four weeks Laredo sends a transport to Dallas, with a pit stop at  Austin Pets Alive along the way, with animals to be taken in by local rescue groups,  Road Trip 4 Paws among them. It's part of a state-wide effort of shelters and rescue groups, working together, to help animals get adopted.

I can report that these two have a VERY happy ending in that they too were adopted shortly after their adoption photos hit the Internet. Best of all? They were adopted together!

Let's see...kitten + toy = fun!

Baloo showed us some prancing moves during his adoption photo shoot, baloo loved the camera, he was so sassy and playful, mowgli is a beautiful seal point siamese, those eyes though, the blue toy really brought out the blue in mowgli's eyes, little blue eyes, that's mowgli.

As with so many rescues, Koko' story is an incredible one. The resiliency of animals never ceases to amaze me. Koko was found at an elementary school, the school security guard removed the dog from school property, but she returned a couple of hours later. At this point, one of the teachers - an animal lover with 4 rescue dogs herself - and the school principal brought Koko into the school bathroom (after class had let out of the day) and gave her a much needed bath, removing numerous ticks in the process.

The teacher took her home and started a campaign to find her owner - surely a dog this sweet and socialized belonged to someone. Nobody ever came forward. As her house was already full with 4 dogs, the teacher reached out to a volunteer at the Donna shelter and that person connected her with Road Trip 4 Paws.

So many people stepped in, cared, and helped this pup find her way to safety with a rescue that would ensure successful placement with a loving family.

Koko is the sweetest girl, whoever adopts her will be one lucky family!

Koko is the perfect sized companion for apartment living, koko's smile lights up the room.

Harry is Ron's brother, and he too has been a recipient of the love and care that Murphys Safe Haven has been providing to homeless kittens and cats in southern Texas.

You should definitely check out Murphys Safe Haven Facebook Page , she's doing amazing work and partners with rescues all over the state to save more animals.

Harry is a cuddle bug, very social and didn't want to leave his foster mama's lap, so I just rolled with it to ensure he stayed comfortable during his adoption photo shoot.

Harry takes relaxing to a new level

Harry is a cuddle bug, uh, harry we're in the middle of a photo shoot dude, all around the pet photography blog circle .

It's about giving shelter, and giving back, this week in the pet photographer blog circle - something pretty much every single pet photographer does because first and foremost we're animal lovers. Let's head on over to  Atlanta pet photographer Courtney Bryson shares how fostering rescue dogs can change your life while saving lives  and then continue clicking on the link at the bottom of each page until you land right back here and then you will have completed the circle.

Keeping pets off the ruff streets: How Roadtrip 4 Paws travels cross-country to save lives

Roadtrip 4 Paws founder Kelly Bond sits with her two dogs, Augusta and Eleanor, after playing with their friend Vivian. RT4P has been a non-profit rescue for more than two years and has helped many animal shelters decrease their euthanasia rates.

If you have ever been to a rural town, you may have seen stray dogs or cats on the streets, living outside in unimaginable conditions.

Over time they get picked up and taken to animal shelters to be put up for adoption. The stories of many of these pets go unnoticed. However, there is a non-profit rescue group changing this pattern for the better.

Most rescue groups will stay within a specific region, such as the Metroplex, but two years ago Roadtrip 4 Paws , a different kind of rescue, was founded by Valley Ranch resident Kelly Bond. The idea of the organization is to transport animals from places where they had small odds of being adopted to places with higher adoption success.

Feeling the pressure of founding a rescue group by herself, Bond began to look at other states for an helpful connections. Looking from the northeast to the northwest, she scanned Facebook pages, fundraisers, websites and volunteer information, emailing successful rescues as she went. Bond received several emails back from multiple shelters in Colorado and they officially started the transportation aspect of RT4P that Bond had wanted so much.

Driving 13 hours to Fort Collins, Colo. from the DFW area with animals recently rescued from many East Texas shelters became a thrice-monthly norm for Bond and volunteers. On average, Roadtrip 4 Paws will transport about 40 dogs and cats, including kittens and puppies, to Colorado per trip. From August 2015 to July 2016 they transported over 1,000 animals.

“That just makes us happy, just knowing that whether they get a home here or as our slogan says ‘a few miles away’ then it works for us,” Bond said.

Coppell resident Jennifer Lay, a former rescue volunteer for eight years, helps Bond run RT4P by handling paperwork, adoption events and administrative tasks. She also coordinates with rescues in Colorado such as  Found Nation Animal Rescue     and Fort Collins Cat Rescue .

“It is such a rewarding feeling to place a dog or cat with a family who will love and take care of them,” Lay said.

Because shelters in Texas country towns do not get much traffic, a lot of animals that go through them will be euthanized because of the lack of space and funds needed to take care of them. Roadtrip 4 Paws rescues animals from the shelters and helps change their odds.

“Our first experience with a rescue outside of Dallas was out in Graham, Texas and we took them from euthanizing from about 50 percent of the animals that came in to less than five percent,” Bond said. “Even to date, they only put down animals that are sick or injured or aggressive. We try to share our goals, and our hopes with them to encourage them to be a little more proactive and try to work different angles to help the animals out.”

Roadtrip 4 Paws has over 61 dogs and cats currently staying with fosters and volunteers and with a few pregnant cats they are expected to have 80 total animals soon. These animals require food, toys, supplies and veterinary appointments that can add up to a high expense. For some, the price tag for just fostering is too much.

“The problem for people with fostering is that they don’t really know what to expect, they don’t know how long they’ll have the animal, they don’t realize that rescue groups cover all of the medical expenses, food supplies, and whatever else is needed,” Bond said. “We just want the animals to get TLC and learn how to live in a home and just get used to that environment and that makes them a better pet and a better foster for the group that we send them too.”

Roadtrip 4 Paws is centered in Coppell with adoption events two or three times a month at Hollywood Feed, a holistic pet food store on S. Denton Tap Road. The group also does meet and greets with an animal and a perspective family to see how they get along with them or if they have another pet. “Jenny and Kelly are committed to their animals,” RT4P pet foster and adopter Gabrielle de la Cruz said. “They seem to almost have a sixth sense connecting dogs with new families and making great matches for dogs to live out their life in safe, happy environments.”

Road Trip With Dog: Effective Summer Day Trips and Lengthy Journey’s With a Pet

If you have just searched up ‘road trip with dog’ –  Google lead you to the right place! With everything slowly opening up here and BC, and progressively across Canada, road trips are making a comeback.

As such, Pawt4Paws would like you help you plan for successful summer day trips with your pup in tow. In addition, we would like to offer some advice on more lengthy road trips with your dog. Keeping everyone on the journey happy, healthy and well-adjusted throughout the adventure!

How To Take a Road Trip With a Dog in Tow

Perhaps this is the first time you are taking your dog on a road trip. Or perhaps you have recognized your pet’s anxiety when out of the home. Either way, knowing how to take a road trip with a dog in tow is important.

Here are 5 ways to ensure an effective road trip with your dog…

Give Your Dog the Room They Need to Feel Comfortable.

As mentioned in our ‘ Car Safety Tips for Dogs ’post:

“Dog barriers are perhaps the most popular method for pet parents and car safety for dogs. Especially when it comes to larger dogs. Dog barrier gates deliver an easy way to take your dog out. It gives them plenty of space to safely roam in the back of your vehicle.”

Get Familiar With the Area You’re Visiting Beforehand.

Nothing is more disappointing than getting to your destination of choice, just to discover there are no off-leash areas for your dog. Or worse; there are no dogs allowed. Although many parks and restaurants alike are becoming pet-friendly, there are some areas that still have restrictions in place against pets. So be sure to get familiar with where you’re going in order to ensure the road trip with your dog doesn’t become a disappointment.

Stop for Play Time.

Depending on the age and size of your dog, making stops to pee, run and play will also be an important part of a successful journey. Short pit-stops could mean the difference in a dog that is easy to travel with, or unknowingly creating anxiety in your dog for future road trip.

Incentivize the Road Trip for Your Dog

Yes, even dogs can use some incentives to behave well. Which is as simple as giving your dog a bone to chew on or a toy to play with. This will pass the time in a way that makes the journey seem quick and easy and enjoyable for your dog.

Plan Your Dog’s Food & Water

As with any good parent – planning meals is important. Whether investing in a collapsible water and food bowl for your dog , bringing along snacks that you know don’t agitate their stomach, or invest in CBD oil to mix with their food to make the journey a calm one. Planning your dog’s food and water will play an important part in an effective road trip.

CBD Oil for Anxious Pets: Best Natural Solutions

Because we and our pets have CB1 and CB2 receptors in our neuro system, CBD can target anxiety and help control stress, depression, and mood disorders. When CBD enters the body and reaches our brain it naturally increases serotonin levels and boosts signaling between the receptors. As a result, it reduces anxiety and fear and improves the pet’s mood behavior.

The Benefits of CBD When Road Tripping with a Dog

“Some dogs get really stressed and anxious while traveling, particularly if they aren’t seasons travelers. Traveling can be a scary experience – being in a small carrier and being made to endure a bumpy, dark and potentially noisy journey. If your dog is boarding a plane with you, being surrounded by so many people in a new environment, your dog will likely feel anxious and stressed. Pet owners and experts recommend using CBD oil for dogs traveling long distance, particularly if they are nervous or highly-strung.” – Pets That Travel

Ready to hit the road? CBD is an excellent way to create a positive experience for your pet for road trips and plane rides alike. Knowing how long it will take CBD products to take effect will be dependent on your dog’s breed and size. This is something we would be happy to discuss with you, finding the right CBD product for your ‘ road trip with dog’ this summer!

7 Best Stops on the San Francisco to Big Sur Road Trip

Heading out for a San Francisco to Big Sur road trip is one of the most popular trips to take from the city, cascading down the coast to some of the most charming towns that Northern California has to offer before ending up in one of the most beautiful natural areas in the entirety of the United States.

And while the destination is certainly worth its salt and can be enjoyed immensely, there is no reason not to take your time and enjoy the journey there, as well.

There are countless amazing stops that one can make that are sure to impress. Much like the LA to Big Sur drive , this road trip along the California coast offers everything from beautiful natural areas to charming towns to historic cities to gastronomic gems.

Table of Contents

Planning a San Francisco to Big Sur Road Trip

The SF to Big Sur drive isn’t a long one, but there are a few things that are worth considering before you head out.

Namely, you need to decide which route you plan to take. There are two main routes: the marginally quicker inland drive along the CA-101 S or the scenic and beautiful drive along with CA-1 S, the latter more commonly being referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway or PCH.

There are actually a couple of stops on this list that lie along the inland route, however, if you want to truly enjoy this drive and have amazing scenery and views of the Pacific Ocean to enjoy, then make sure to take the PCH — I promise you won’t regret it. And if you’re interested in making an inland stop, they are all relatively easy detours that won’t add too much to your drive time.

If you need to rent a car prior to driving to Big Sur then I recommend  searching on Rentalcars.com  to find a great deal for car hire.

Alternatively, if you’re embarking on a long trip such as from San Francisco to San Diego or LA and prefer a campervan or RV, then I suggest  browsing on Outdoorsy  which offers a huge selection of choices.

How Far is San Francisco to Big Sur?

The distance from San Francisco to Big Sur is approximately 140-150 miles (225 to 241 kilometres) depending on your route and it will take about two and a half hours to drive it — provided that there is no traffic (unlikely) and you don’t make any of the amazing stops outlined in this article.

All in all, driving to Big Sur can be done relatively quickly and it’s short enough for a weekend trip, but a bit too far if you want to make a day trip out of it.

7 Best San Francisco to Big Sur Drive Stops

The first stop out of San Francisco en route to Big Sur is going to be Daly City, often referred to as the “gateway to the peninsula” — the peninsula referring to the San Francisco Bay Area — as it is San Francisco’s closest neighbour.

Daly City may simply seem like it’s just a continuation of the city itself or a large suburb, but it isn’t to be ignored. While there may not seem like there is much of interest, this gateway to the peninsula is home to a number of beautiful beaches and outdoor activities worth taking in.

For instance, you can enjoy the beautiful Pacific views at Thornton State Beach or even go for a hike on San Bruno Mountain.

So if you want to start your drive down to Big Sur out with a bang, make sure to make a stop in Daly City!

View of San Francisco from San Bruno Mountain

Half Moon Bay

If you’re heading down the Pacific Coast Highway, the first major town outside of the San Francisco Bay Area that you’re going to hit will be the lovely Half Moon Bay. Located about thirty miles south of San Francisco , this small city is worth a stop if you want to experience some of the culture of Northern California’s coast.

Half Moon Bay has a lovely city centre with a walkable main street and many cute shops, cafes, galleries and boutiques to explore.

If you’re looking for a unique and locally made souvenir from your trip, popping into a local artisan’s shop in Half Moon Bay is an excellent choice. The city also boasts a beautiful beach, Moss Beach, which is a great place to stop if you can’t get enough sea views.

Half Moon Bay has a cosy, small-town feel despite the fact that it is so close to the urban jungle that is San Francisco and makes for the absolutely perfect stop on any road trip to Big Sur!

Beautiful Half Moon Bay

If you’re interested in making a detour inland on your road trip from San Francisco, then consider heading to the city of Gilroy in Santa Clara county. Known for its famous Gilroy Garlic Festival, the city claims to be the garlic capital of the USA but there is far more to it than the pungent allium.

If you’re travelling with children, then make sure to stop at Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park for some family-friendly fun.

If this doesn’t interest you, then consider heading to one of the nearby wineries in the city to sample some local vintages — that is, if you’re not the one driving! Beyond garlic, Gilroy is known for its gastronomy and there are lots of great restaurants to eat or even local produce to sample.

So whether you’re looking for an interactive stop that’s great for the whole family or are interested in sampling wines from regions that aren’t Napa Valley or Sonoma , then Gilroy makes for an excellent stop on the San Francisco to Big Sur drive, even if it’s a slight detour from the coast.

Alternatively, if you want to see some of the most beautiful forested regions not too far from the coast, then consider making a stop at Bug Basin Redwoods State Park instead. Here you can view some incredible giant California Redwood trees in a beautiful environment.

Looping back to the Highway 1 and the Pacific Coast, the next stop should be the chilled-out city of Santa Cruz. Known for being an iconic coastal surf town, Santa Cruz is the perfect place to stop if you want to take in a cool city with wonderful seaside vibes and watch some of the best surfers in California.

Known for its iconic Santa Cruz Boardwalk which boasts classic carnival games, an old wooden roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, various adrenaline-pumping rides and arcades galore, this is a perfect place for kids and nostalgia-seeking adults alike.

If you’re not feeling like spending time at the boardwalk, take the time to stroll along the wonderful seaside promenade and watch the surfers try to catch that perfect wave.

If you’re interested in taking in some natural beauty, then make sure to stop at Natural Bridges State Beach and admire the beautiful rock formations. Alternatively, if you have the time, you could go for a hike at Wilder Ranch State Park.

All in all, Santa Cruz makes for an excellent destination in and of itself and it is absolutely perfect for a stop on a drive to Big Sur from San Francisco.

Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz

Just a bit north of the Big Sur coast lies the lovely city of Monterey. Situated on its eponymous bay, Monterey is a favourite weekend retreat for San Franciscans looking for a laid-back place to visit as the city has a lot to offer visitors.

Known for the incredible Monterey Bay Aquarium, there is a lot of history in this seaside city and a lot to see and do, so it makes for an excellent base for exploring Big Sur, as well.

Take the time to walk down Cannery Row and enjoy all of the kitschy shops and sites to see here. If you want to, tour the aquarium and admire the incredible ecosystems of Monterey Bay.

If you want to stretch your legs, take a stroll along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail. This trail spans for a total of 18 miles (roughly 29 kilometres), however, you can walk however much or little of it as you desire.

If you’re a literary fan, you will rejoice in the sights that are present in many a John Steinbeck novel, himself a native to Monterey.

And if you venture a bit further south from the city before you hit Carmel, you can enjoy the splendours of the 17-mile drive — a coastal route that is considered to be one of the most scenic drives in the entirety of the US.

Even if you decide to end here, you won’t be missing out. Visiting Monterey from San Francisco is never a bad idea as the city has so much to offer!

Carmel-by-the-Sea

If you’re looking for Monterey’s more posh and high-end cousin, then you would find yourself in charming Carmel-by-the-Sea. Known for its famous former mayor (Clint Eastwood), cobbled streets and ultra-quaint city centre, Carmel is oozing with character and charm and is an unmissable stop on the drive to Big Sur.

Carmel is filled with upmarket shops, quaint cafes, artist’s studios and galleries, fantastic restaurants and countless tasting rooms for local wineries.

In fact, if you’re interested in sampling some local vintages, Carmel is a great place to do it as you can easily walk from one tasting room to another and not have to worry about driving (provided you’ve stopped here for the night before continuing on to Big Sur!).

Carmel also boasts a lovely state beach that is absolutely beautiful. There is a reason that this town is so popular for romantic getaways because it has an undeniable mystique that is sure to instantly charm any who visit.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

The final stop on this road trip lies just north of Big Sur itself and is an area of absolutely outstanding natural beauty, enough to rival Big Sur proper. That is Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.

Though it doesn’t get nearly the attention that Big Sur does (and Big Sur really does live up to the hype, don’t get me wrong), Point Lobos is one of the most beautiful areas in this region and this state park is well-maintained with countless walking trails and viewpoints to take in the stunning vistas and dramatic coastal scenery.

Whether you’re looking for a longer hike or a gentle stroll with a fabulous view of the jagged coastline and playful otters riding the surf, Point Lobos can offer it to you.

From here, you can continue onto all of the highlights of Big Sur, including the Bixby Creek Bridge, McWay Falls, the purple sand of Pfeiffer Beach and more.

Planning to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles in Sept 2024 via Big Sur. Where would be the best stop over for one night? On google maps it keeps on taking me on a different route inland…. reason being?

Hi Linda, spending the night Monterey/Carmel may be a good idea if you want to ensure that you get the most out of Big Sur. Otherwise, consider a night on the Central Coast somewhere like Pismo Beach or even further south like Santa Barbara. The reason Google Maps is showing an inland route is that is the quickest way to get from LA to San Francisco. You will need to re route the map in order to drive along the highway 1/101.

Husband and I are going to San Francisco and then driving down PCH to San Luis Obispo, in one day. stopping periodically for some sites. Then stating the night, the driving back up to San Fran, stopping more and staying half way between, maybe Carmel for one night. then driving back to Dan Fean to fly home. So 3 days fir driving and visiting….doable, worth it?

If you get early starts and prioritise what you want to see and do, I don’t see why this trip isn’t doable 🙂 Have a great time!

Me and my husband visited SF on my 60th birthday, this was a place on my bucket list. We had a big to do list while in San Francisco and go to Carmel was one. So we drove down to Carmel by the sea and I feel in love! I didnt want to leave but we had our hotel in SF so we had to go back for our return flight to St. Louis. That was 5 years ago and I still long for San Francisco and Carmel. That song is true I left my heart in San Francisco.

Thanks for sharing, Dina!

Don’t believe us when we say that the PCH road trip is the most beautiful road trip in the world?

Then check out these beautiful photos from the USA West Coast!

Step 1: PCH FAQs

The Pacific Coast Highway is pretty large and rather confusing.

It is essential to understand the PCH before you plan a trip.

Here’s some basic information:

Where does the Pacific Coast Highway start and end?

Wondering where is the Pacific Coast Highway and how long it is? Also, where does the PCH start and end?

One of the things that creates confusion while planning a Pacific Coast Highway road trip is that the road is simply huge.

Plus everybody seems to be talking about a different stretch of the road when they refer to the PCH.

We experienced this several times while planning our first trip to the region.

The coastal route or the PCH starts at San Diego near the Mexican border and ends near Seattle in the city of Olympia in the Pacific Northwest.

It is not officially named the Pacific Coast Highway but has always been called so since it parallels the Pacific Coast.

The routes to follow for the road trip include Highway 1 in southern and central California and Highway 101 in northern California, Oregon, and Washington.

How long is the Pacific Coast Highway?

Since it goes the entire length of the West Coast, just how long is the Pacific Coast Highway?

The road beginning in San Diego to its end in Olympia, the capital of Washington State is roughly 1700 miles long!

And yes, it really does go parallel to the Pacific Ocean for the most part!

What is the PCH1?

The road officially called the PCH1 is located in California. Its other name is California State Route 1 (SR1) or Highway 1.

Where does Hwy 1 start and end?

The PCH1 drive extends from the I-5 intersection in Orange County, Southern California to Highway 101 intersection near Leggett in Northern California.

Also, the name PCH 1 is interchangeably used with Highway 1 (Hwy 1) or Route 1 or California 1 or SR 1.

Add to that, certain parts of California PCH 1 near Pismo Beach on Central Coast are known as Cabrillo Highway while a section north of San Francisco is called the Shoreline Highway.

Many times Hwy 1 merges with Hwy 101, creating even more confusion.

This is most noticeable from Pismo Beach to San Luis Obispo and along the Golden Gate Bridge where the two roads merge.

The Hwy also simply disappears and takes street names in San Francisco (19th Avenue) and in Santa Monica (Lincoln Blvd).

If you are planning a trip along this route, then the Highway 1 trip planner will help you discover attractions between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

So how do you ensure you don’t get lost while planning a road trip up PCH?

The easiest way is to ensure that you are following the PCH1 between Monterey and San Luis Obispo in California.

This is the most spectacular stretch that passes through Big Sur and the road here is clearly marked, causing no confusion.

Our California Highway 1 road trip planner will guide you towards the best stops on Highway 1 California in Big Sur including McWay Falls and Pfeiffer Beach.

Which section of the Pacific Coast Highway should you drive?

For first-timers, we recommend driving the California Highway 1 or PCH 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles for multiple reasons.

This stretch of PCH1 passes through the beautiful Big Sur region.

For many people, Big Sur is the #1 attraction along the route.

Also, the gateway cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco are very well connected and easy to fly in or out after your trip.

One-way car rentals between the two cities are easily available or you also have the option of a loop road trip.

Our San Francisco road trip planner will help you plan your trip to SF, LA, as well as the attractions in between.

Have already been to this part of California Coast? Don’t want to begin in SF? You have many other options to customize the itinerary as you want!

After the PCH 1 ends, you can either drive south along the coast to San Diego or all the way up to Olympic National Park and the Canadian border in the north.

Alternatively, you can also begin the Pacific Coast Highway road trip from San Diego and drive north.

The entire route is scenic and has plenty of attractions.

In northern California you will find beautiful redwood trees while in Oregon, you can see stunning capes and lighthouses as well as unique geological formations.

In Washington, you will find everything from deep blue lakes and dense rainforests to sea stacks and driftwood covered beaches.

And that’s why it is so important to decide which stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway you want to drive before you plan your trip.

Which direction to drive the Pacific Coast Highway?

All right, so you have decided which section of the Pacific Coast Highway you are going to be driving.

You know how much time you have in hand.

So which gateway city do you begin your PCH Road trip?

Is it better to drive north or south on the Pacific Coast Highway?

While many people recommend driving from south to north, our favorite is to drive south.

Yes, you will see the most gorgeous sites first and might end in the chaotic city of Los Angeles but you will be closer to the stunning views plus have easier access to parking lots and pull-outs.

That being said, if you have enough time to savor the trip then the direction won’t really matter much!

When to visit the Pacific Coast Highway?

The best part? You can drive the Pacific Coast Highway year round!

There are, however, certain times of the year when the PCH road trip is more scenic than others.

Spring is our personal favorite.

You can see wildflowers along the Pacific Coast Highway plus spot wildlife including migrating whales.

The temperature is pleasant for hiking, during the daytime it is neither too hot nor too cold.

An added bonus, the crowds are fewer than in summer or winter holidays.

However, you should skip spring break week, if possible.

Remember: Spring can be too windy and cold but the gorgeous wildflowers tip the scales.

Our second favorite time of the year for this road trip is from late summer to early fall, just after the schools are in session.

September and October on the coast are mild and sunny.

A pleasant breeze flows from the ocean making hikes more fun.

Wineries along the PCH in Napa, Sonoma, and along the Central Coast have beautiful fall colors and are ready for harvest.

Visitors can enjoy grape stomping at wineries if they time it right.

Winter and summer both have their pros and cons.

In winter, you can whale watch and enjoy the scenic beauty without the fog.

But temperatures, especially for northern California, can be quite chilly.

It can also rain, causing landslides and slippery trails.

The PCH may stay closed for days due to extended storm damage.

The very end of winter – from mid to late February – is a good time with mild weather and low crowds.

The summer months of June, July, and August can be quite foggy.

Big Sur looks beautiful and dramatic in the fog but the roads can be treacherous for driving.

The fog usually prevails in the morning and evening so you should still have clear blue afternoons.

As you continue south, it can get too hot to hike or stay outdoors for longer times.

Peak tourist times are winter holiday season and summer vacations.

Expect accommodations to fill up faster, potential delays on the road, and full parking lots at major attractions like Bixby Bridge and McWay Falls.

To read more about the best time to visit and see photos in different seasons, read our post When to Drive the Pacific Coast Highway .

How to rent a car for a PCH road trip? Which car should you rent?

The best way to travel Pacific Coast Highway is by car!

Look for one way car rentals unless you plan to do a round trip.

However, one-way rentals can be expensive so factor that in while planning your itinerary.

If you have more time and want to do the Pacific Coast Highway road trip on a budget, then you can definitely return to the original destination to reduce costs.

An SUV is really useful while negotiating the twisting turns of the PCH however, it is also easy to break in into.

Because of that, we prefer a sedan if we are driving with kids and have a lot of luggage in the trunk.

A muscle car or a convertible is also a great option for driving the Pacific Coast Highway.

The coast has stunning views and a top down lets you feel the ocean breeze and enjoy the panorama.

A recently popular option is to rent an RV for the Pacific Coast Highway travel itinerary.

This allows you to enjoy the natural attractions along the coast to the maximum.

How much should you budget for Pacific Coast Highway road trip?

The famous question, how much does it cost to drive the Pacific Coast Highway?! Or what should be your Pacific Coast Highway road trip budget?

In general, we recommend budgeting $200 per person per day including hotel, car, and food for road tripping the Pacific Coast Highway.

That’s why the easiest way to do the trip on a budget is to choose a shorter Pacific Coast Highway trip itinerary.

The fewer number of days on your trip, the fewer the costs.

That said, California, in general, is expensive and we have never been able to go on an extended California trip under $1000 per person including airfare.

You can also consider road tripping the PCH 1 along Oregon or Washington to reduce costs as these states are somewhat cheaper than California.

Step 2: Best PCH Stops

If you have decided to visit the most popular part of coastal California:

Begin your Pacific Coast Highway road trip planning by exploring the major attractions and things to do along California’s Hwy 1.

Popular attractions including West Coast lighthouses , waterfalls, state parks, hiking trails, beaches, coastal towns await you on this marvelous drive – and off course the iconic Bixby Bridge!

You can find information about these and other essential attractions in our California Coast trip planner.

Also, explore other stops on Highway 101 in northern California if you have more time.

Here you will find majestic redwood trees and the Redwoods State and National parks.

Road trip the Redwoods Scenic Byway and explore cities like Eureka and Crescent City.

There are also plenty of stunning stops along the Pacific Coast Highway in both Oregon and Washington.

You can read more about the best stops along the PCH here.

This will give you an idea of the most important places to visit and help in planning the trip around your interests.

Be sure to finalize your Pacific Coast Highway Map and print copies before you embark on your trip.

Step 5: Book your PCH Road Trip

And finally we come to the task of booking your PCH vacation.

When to book and plan your PCH trip

In general, we recommend booking your trip at least 6 months in advance, though ideally, earlier is better.

While you can always plan a last-minute PCH road trip, especially if staying nearby, it is not recommended.

This especially applies if you are traveling in peak periods and in the Golden State.

Every California trip planner suggests booking in advance.

As we have experienced, booking hotels closer to the trip can definitely make the trip twice as expensive.

Before booking your trip, we recommend researching destinations and finalizing your Pacific Coast Highway Road trip itinerary.

In some instances, we have booked first and then planned the trip but this can lead to more hectic trips.

Here’s what all you need to book for your trip.

Book flight tickets to the West Coast

For best deals, book your tickets to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, or Seattle by checking on Skyscanner or Google flights.

Book car rental

All major companies have their branches in California.

You can rent from a variety of companies including Hertz, Fox, Enterprise, Dollar, and Thrifty for your trip.

Book hotel accommodations as per the itinerary

There are a variety of hotels, resorts, and motels for every budget along the PCH.

We have covered the best places to stay along the PCH in detail in this post.

Purchase travel insurance

We recommend getting travel insurance from World Nomads.

Purchase attraction tickets, if any

There are several attractions along the PCH for which you can purchase tickets in advance.

We recommend the advance purchase of tickets for attractions like the Monterey Aquarium, San Francisco museums, etc.

Purchase tours and cruises, if any

You can go on a variety of wildlife watching cruises along the PCH including whale watching, dolphin cruises, etc.

You can also reserve tickets for the Alcatraz cruise prior to your trip.

Recommended group tours

There are no tour companies that take you the entire length of PCH.

This is very much a self-drive trip.

However, there are companies that will take you to Malibu from Los Angeles or to Monterey from San Francisco.

Also in Monterey, you can take whale watching tours.

Reserve a table at restaurants, if needed

You will find amazing restaurants serving a variety of cuisine along the PCH.

Our favorites are seafood restaurants in Monterey, oysters in Tomales Bay, Mexican food in Mission District of San Francisco, and a variety of cuisines in Los Angeles.

If you like to plan every detail or want to plan for a special meal for birthdays or anniversaries, then you can reserve a table at the hotel of your choice in advance.

Prepare, pack, and go on the best road trip ever!

What other preparations should you make.

If you are traveling internationally then check your passport validity and visa status.

Apply for visas, if necessary.

Also, check whether you need IDP (International Driving Permit).

Other preparation includes print and/or having virtual copies of all maps, itineraries, tickets, and bookings easily accessible on your phone.

Also, budget your trip and convert currency, if needed.

Read below for more detailed information.

Understand internet and phone coverage

You will find that there is extremely poor and at times zero cell coverage along many stretches of the PCH, especially in the Big Sur region.

That’s why we recommend carrying a GPS in addition to your phone as well as saving offline maps on your phone.

You can also get printed maps of PCH1 for the section you are planning to drive.

If you are traveling internationally

The three main areas to take care of if you are traveling internationally include taking care of passports and visas, renting a car and driving in USA, and converting money to USD.

If you are traveling with kids

Pacific coast highway road trip with kids? Been there, done that!

Our final section of the ultimate Pacific Coast Highway road trip planner.

Did you know that you can drive the Pacific Coast Highway with kids?

The first time we went with our kids was when our daughter was just a 6 months old baby and our son was 3 years old.

We started in San Francisco, cycled the Golden Gate Bridge with the kids, drove through Big Sur, watched the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas rookery near San Simeon, and ended our trip at Anaheim in Disney.

Both the kids loved every bit of it.

Also, most places and businesses in California, Oregon, and Washington and especially along the Pacific Coast Highway are kid-friendly.

When we road tripped, most hotels provided crib or baby cots, all the restaurants had high chairs, and even the wineries had kid-friendly areas.

Throughout our trip, we met friendly people who smiled and waved at our kids.

We always felt welcome wherever we went and felt quite at ease.

Read our post on Best Kid-friendly resorts along the Pacific Coast Highway to book your accommodations.

There are so many things to do along the Pacific Coast Highway road trip that are perfect for the kids.

They will love exploring nature: hike through redwood forests, discover tide pool creatures, play in the sand and on the beach, splash in the water, hike to see waterfalls, whale watch using binoculars, plus spend quality time with the parents.

There are also many kid-friendly attractions on the route including the Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Oceano Dunes Railroad museum, sand dune buggy rentals, whale watching tours, Santa Monica Pier, Disney theme parks, etc.

For more information, read our post on the Best Things to do on the West Coast with kids.

In fact, driving the Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most fun family holiday vacations for families.

Other things to consider

Stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway can get closed due to storms or landslides or wildfires, so we recommend keeping an eye on the news before your trip and getting travel insurance for just in case anything goes awry.

What should you pack for Pacific Coast Highway road trip?

It can get chilly along the PCH any time of the year, so we recommend packing in layers: long sleeve shirts, short sleeve t-shirts, and tank tops.

Pack long hiking pants for the northern and central coast and shorts for SoCal.

Pack a rain jacket and a sweater for the chilly days.

Take hiking shoes and socks and water shoes for beachcombing.

Pack some heels and a silk blouse for date nights in San Francisco, Monterey, and Los Angeles.

If you plan to drive north towards Portland and Seattle in the winter, then add thermal underwear and a packable jacket.

In summer, take sunglasses, a sunhat, and sunscreen.

Do not forget to pack a camera and binoculars.

10 Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose, CA

Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose, CA

Searching for the perfect weekend getaways from San Jose or elsewhere in the Bay Area? You’re in luck – there are plenty to choose from. In fact, one of my absolute favorite things about living in the South Bay is the abundance of day trips and weekend trips in close proximity to here.

Want to walk among the redwoods and scale epic mountain ranges? Or perhaps you’re in the mood for a quiet seaside escape, where you can stroll foggy shorelines and search for whales in the distance? Maybe you’re ready for a city break, where you can explore cultural attractions and sample world-class food? Or a wine country getaway, filled with leisurely brunches and boujee tastings?

Dog Friendly Accommodation Sonoma

Well, there’s a weekend getaway from San Jose to appeal to all of those desires…and many others! I’ve spent the past 2.5 years scouring California tourism websites, crossing off bucket list destinations, and discovering my own hidden gems throughout the state.

This list doesn’t cover every weekend trip from San Jose that I’ve enjoyed, but does include my top 10 favorites. Happy travels!

  • Yosemite National Park
  • Sonoma County
  • Napa Valley
  • San Luis Obispo
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea
  • Santa Cruz Mountains

Distance from San Jose: 2.5 hours

2 Day Big Sur Itinerary

I’m not sure I’ll ever find the words to do justice to the magic of Big Sur  – the land of foggy coastlines, enchanting redwoods, kitschy family lodges, cozy log cabins and breathtaking scenic drives. It’s a place where you can choose your own adventure, from redwood hikes to seaside strolls and so much more.

Important side note: Big Sur is not a single town or national park, but rather an unincorporated area spanning 70 miles along the central California coastline. Within this region are multiple state parks, natural preserves, beaches, and hiking trails, all linked by the iconic Highway 1.

Best Hiking in Big Sur

And while the scenery and activities are amazing , my favorite memory from Big Sur is glamping in a hand-woven twig hut at Treebones Resort . I’ve stayed in some pretty unique accommodations  around the globe, but the twig hut definitely tops the list. That property is pure magic!

2. Yosemite

Distance from san jose: 3.5 hours.

What to Know Before You Visit Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is situated in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and is famed for its incredible cliffs, deep valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and ancient sequoia groves. During my own visit to Yosemite, the word that kept coming to mind was “majestic.”

The mountains, the trees, the waterfalls, the rivers—they’re all so powerful, grand, and wild within the park national boundaries. It’s just a larger than life kind of place!

The First Timer's Guide to Yosemite

We visited Yosemite during early summer, when the landscapes were lush and the waterfalls were roaring. But I’m itching to return in the winter months; I can only imagine how breathtaking and peaceful the scenery is when its blanketed in a thick layer of fluffy white snow. Add in a cozy lodge and a cup of spiked hot chocolate, and I’m all set!

Distance from San Jose: 45 minutes

Temescal Alley Itinerary Oakland

One of the destinations I was most eager to visit after moving to San Jose was Oakland , the “other” city by the bay (with the original City By the Bay being San Francisco, of course).

Oakland is a true multicultural melting pot, and has developed a reputation for its trendy neighborhoods, colorful street murals, and bustling waterfront district. The hip and historic Temescal neighborhood swept me off my feet with its plentiful boutiques, funky dive bars, beer gardens, art galleries and cafes.

Temescal Alley Itinerary Oakland

And don’t even get me started on the food – Oakland has it all, from southern style mac-n-cheese ( promise me you’ll try the buffalo mac at Homeroom if you ever visit Oakland) to authentic Ethiopian, Burmese, Korean and other global cuisines.

4. santa cruz.

Santa Cruz CA

A quick trip over the hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and you’ll feel like you’re a world away from Silicon Valley. For me, Santa Cruz almost feels more like SoCal than NorCal; the kitschy beach boardwalk, long stretches of shoreline, and laidback surfer vibes probably play a role in that.

My perfect day in Santa Cruz? Strolling down the beach with a coffee and a pastry, window shopping and eating my way through downtown, cheap thrills on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and sunset at Natural Bridges State Beach.

Santa Cruz CA

Honestly, the entire stretch of coastline between San Fransisco and Santa Cruz makes for a great weekend getaway. Pescadero and Half Moon Bay are two of my favorite charming little towns north of Santa Cruz.

Distance from San Jose: 2 hours

Dutcher Crossing Vineyard Sonoma Dog Friendly

Ah, Sonoma . You will forever be one of my favorite weekend getaways from San Jose! No matter how many times I visit, I discover more charming towns, more sprawling vineyards, more excellent wines, and more reasons to return to this iconic region of California.

Don’t be fooled – there is a town called Sonoma, but most often when people talk about visiting “Sonoma” they’re referring to the entire county…which is quite large! You could drive for an hour and still be in Sonoma County, and there are plenty of charming towns to choose as your base.

Christopher Creek Winery

Healdsburg is my favorite town in Sonoma, with Sebastopol coming in as a close second. Not only is this region of California ridiculously beautiful, it also produces some truly world-class wines, and is more laid back (read: less pretentious) than neighboring Napa.

Wine Tasting in Calistoga CA

…that said, I’ll never pass up an opportunity to visit Napa Valley. My favorite towns (so far) are Calistoga and Napa , though I’ve heard great things about St. Helena too.

Some of Napa’s wineries truly look like they were plucked out of the Tuscan countryside; they’re incredibly regal and luxurious. Others are a bit more understated, but either way you can always be sure that the wine will be amazing .

Napa Private Wine Tasting

Accommodations in Napa can be quite pricey, so I usually opt for Airbnbs or budget chain hotels. With any luck, you’ll be tipsy enough that it won’t matter where you’re sleeping anyways!

7. San Luis Obispo

Distance from san jose: 3 hours.

How to Spend One Weekend in San Luis Obispo

For wine enthusiasts, San Luis Obispo  is an excellent off-the-beaten-path alternative to Napa and Sonoma. San Luis Obispo County is actually the third largest wine region in all of California, but it’s much less popular among tourists than its northern counterparts.

The Edna Valley area is absolutely gorgeous, and is home to a number of highly-rated wineries in very close proximity to one another. It’s known primarily for its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs – two personal favorites of mine.

How to Spend One Weekend in San Luis Obispo

Downtown San Luis Obispo is also cute as can be, with its plentiful hip cafes, charming brunch spots, lively bars, and quirky shops. If you’re able to visit on a Thursday, you can’t miss the iconic Thursday Night Farmer’s Market. It felt more like a festival or street party than a farmer’s market, really!

Adventure seekers can outdoor lovers can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking and SUPing in the hills and coastal areas surrounding San Luis Obispo.

8. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Distance from san jose: 1.5 hours.

Carmel by the Sea Weekend Getaway

Carmel-by-the-Sea . The name alone sounds like something out of a fairytale…and after seeing the town myself, I can safely say that the name is a perfect fit. This ritzy little village is known for its old world charm, scenic and walkable downtown, and dramatic coastal views.

Quaint cottages line the streets of Carmel’s one-square mile downtown area, along with boutiques and wine tasting rooms. You won’t find any street numbers here; instead, businesses and residents name their homes (i.e. “Sea Urchin”) or use cross-streets or descriptive details to provide directions.

Carmel by the Sea Weekend Getaway

Carmel is also the perfect jumping off point for exploring the famous 17-Mile Drive. This scenic road winds down the Pacific coastline past gorgeous vistas, world-famous golf courses and luxurious homes. You can also combine a trip to Carmel with a visit to nearby Monterey.

9. Santa Cruz Mountains

Distance from san jose: 30 minutes.

Savannah Chanelle Vineyards

True, the Santa Cruz Mountains are close enough to San Jose to be a day trip destination rather than a weekend getaway. But spending a night or two in this forested region is the perfect way to escape the madness of the city and rekindle your connection with nature.

There are a surprising number of charming Airbnbs in the Santa Cruz Mountains, most of which are cozy wood cabins surrounded by redwood trees and trickling streams. But we opted for something a bit more whimsical: glamping in a treehouse …on a working vineyard, no less!

Glamping Vineyard Treehouse California

The Santa Cruz Mountains are a hub for under-the-radar wineries and scenic hiking trails, so you can tailor this trip to your perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. How lucky are we to have such a stunning weekend getaway so close to where we live?

10. Lake Tahoe

Distance from san jose: 4 hours.

Lake Tahoe | Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose

Lake Tahoe is one of those rare destinations that truly shines in any season. During the summer, you can booze cruise around the lake and cool off in the chilly, perfectly turquoise water. The hiking is excellent in almost any month of the year, and can be especially nice when the autumn leaves come out to play.

Winter is perhaps the most popular time for visit Lake Tahoe, when visitors flock to iconic ski resorts like Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood and Squaw Valley.

Lake Tahoe | Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose

Whether you prefer summer sports like swimming, kayaking, hiking and SUPing, or would rather cozy up in a log cabin and spend your afternoons hitting the slopes, Tahoe is easily one of the best weekend getaways from San Jose.

15 Best Day Trips from San Jose (CA)

One of the most significant technological and cultural hubs in the country, San Jose, California, is a hotbed of urban prowess, entertainment and of course, has its stunning Mediterranean-like climate and topography, delivering warm, dry and sunny weather all year round.

One of the best things about San Jose is its convenient location, within arm’s reach of a number of beautiful places that are ideal for day trips.

Thanks to Northern California’s diverse landscape, you can go from surfing the waves under the hot sun to standing on a mountain peak above the clouds within the same day.

Check out this handy guide outlining some of the best day trip destinations from Silicon Valley’s San Jose.

1. Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz, California

The epitome of a Californian beach town and still one of the nation’s favourite destinations because of the perpetual summer vibe that can be found here, Santa Cruz is best known for its sun, beach and famous Boardwalk.

The majority of visitors will spend most of their time on the buzzing promenade enjoying the rides and games, however, Santa Cruz also has a wealth of cultural and natural attractions to offer.

The historic mission church is a fascinating and spectacular sight to behold, while destinations like Wilder Ranch State Park offer enchanting and unspoiled hiking spots, perfect for soaking up some truly unmissable views.

Alameda, California

The town of Alameda can be found close to downtown San Jose and has strong historical and cultural roots that are apparent when wandering its charming streets full of mid-century architecture and signage.

There’s also a huge antiquing culture here, which gives the streets and shops a vintage feel that is enchanting to be immersed in, the hub of this being Park Avenue.

Here you’ll find everything from vintage clothing and apparel to fascinating trinkets from all over the world.

For a real treat, head down to the old naval base on the first Sunday of each month to visit the Alameda Antiques Faire in search of something truly unique to take home.

Napa Valley

The true epitome of wine country and a nationwide favourite destination, Napa can be reached in less than two hours from San Jose.

It is home to some of the finest wining and dining in California.

With a vast number of tours operating in the area, it has never been easier to learn about Napa’s rich history in winemaking and sample some of the delicious end products.

Napa also offers some truly breath-taking hiking destinations due to its gently rolling foothills and orchards, and offers endless great spots for a stroll and a picnic.

4. Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay

Another immediately recognisable and iconic Californian coastal destination is the town of Half Moon Bay; charming and quaint in equal measure, and a popular alternative to raucous Santa Cruz.

Only an hour northwest of San Jose, you’ll find this water sport haven, where kayaking in the bay and surfing in the Pacific are two of the most popular pastimes.

With many surf schools offering lessons, it’s a great place to learn during the summer, though beginners may want to take a back seat in winter as the waves grow to monstrous sizes exceeding 50-feet in height.

5. San Francisco

San Francisco - View From Twin Peaks

The iconic and classic “Golden Gate City” should be on the bucket-list of anyone visiting the states, let alone California.

Easily reachable from San Jose even without a car, thanks to the world-class public transport connecting the two, San Francisco can be the perfect day trip if you know what you want to do when you arrive.

Popular favourites are the Golden Gate Bridge, Mission Dolores and Lombard Street, but if you want to head off the beaten track, head over to Haight-Ashbury and wander the colourful streets covered in murals and exuding a heavy dose of flower-power.

Gilroy, California

A world-class destination when it comes to indulgence, Gilroy is a self-proclaimed foodie and retail haven, only half an hour to the south of San Jose.

The aptly named garlic capital of the world plays host to the Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, where you can enjoy every garlic-based dish and snack imaginable, including their world-famous garlic fries and even garlic ice cream.

You’ll also find one of the country’s premium shopping malls in Gilroy, housing over 140 stores and boasting the accolade of having the largest collection of designer stores in Northern California.

7. Livermore

Livermore, California

Perfect for wine lovers who are looking for an alternative to the popular Napa Valley, Livermore is a thriving community of wineries that comprise an up-and-coming wine industry.

Many have been producing critically acclaimed wines since the time of the San Francisco Mission.

A mere 30 minutes from San Jose in Alameda, the town has a long history of ranching and agriculture as well as the grape farming, and is a wonderful place to explore on foot.

8. Sausalito

Sausalito

At the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge you’ll find the enchanting beachside community known as Sausalito that has visitors falling in love with it within minutes of arriving.

Visitors can experience the pioneering force behind many of the world’s social media and online powerhouses like Google and Facebook, and marvel at the quirky and sometimes bizarre office spaces they operate from.

10. Carmel by the Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea

A great number of San Joseans regularly make the trip to this romantic coastal resort with its spectacularly sandy beach and irresistible small-town ambience.

You’ll find the gorgeous beach in the long cove curling around Carmel Bay, where secluded spots and picturesque sunsets are plentiful.

Heading further into town, you’ll quickly become accustomed to the lack of numbered street addresses and find that meandering around is the norm here, and discovering hidden gems around every corner is commonplace.

Expect to stumble across art galleries, charming artisan boutiques and some truly world-class dining options.

11. Muir Woods

Muir Woods National Monument

One of the last remaining redwood forests in the San Francisco Bay area, the Muir Woods are only a couple of hours from San Jose and will transport you to another world.

The trip itself by car is wonderfully picturesque, taking you across the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headland, but once you arrive at the Muir Woods, the scenery will take your breath away.

Monumentally large trees tower above visitors on all sides and you can hike towards the ocean or up into the mountains.

Be sure to pack plenty of water and a lunch, as shops are few and far between in the forest.

12. West Cliff Drive

West Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, CA

A six-mile path that hugs the coast, West Cliff Drive is a favourite amongst walkers and cyclists who want to leisurely explore this beautiful stretch of rocky coastline and headlands.

Part of Monterey Bay, the route is also popular with surfers chasing the perfect Pacific breaks.

You can even find the world’s first surf museum here, commemorating one of the nation’s most celebrated sports and resulting cultures.

Appropriately located in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, you can learn about the surfers braving the crashing waves while enjoying excellent views of them doing just that.

13. Monterey

14. Berkeley

Berkeley, California

This famous university town north of San Francisco is as rich in history and culture as it is in academic knowledge.

Art lovers, foodies and shoppers all regularly take a trip here to make the most of the diverse range of activities and entertainment on offer.

Downtown is a great place to try new things, whether it’s window shopping at quirky stores or browsing through the fresh produce at the absolutely enormous market, the Berkeley Bowl.

15. Pescadero

Piegon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero, California

Another charmingly quaint seaside town that offers both entertainment and exceptionally beautiful natural reserves is the area known as Pescadero.

WEATHER ALERT

2 rip current statements in effect for Flagler, Coastal, Inland and Volusia, Coastal, Inland Regions

‘fatally flawed:’ disney+ subscription threatens lawsuit after woman dies during florida trip, kanokporn tangsuan died following visit to disney springs.

Anthony Talcott , Digital Journalist

ORLANDO, Fla. – Nearly one year after a doctor died following a meal at an Irish restaurant at Disney Springs , Disney is now trying to dodge a wrongful death lawsuit by pointing to the widower’s Disney+ subscription.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The incident occurred in October 2023, when the doctor — Kanokporn Tangsuan, 42 — along with her husband and her mother-in-law ate at Raglan Road in the Disney Springs shopping center.

At the time, Tangsuan and her husband told the waiter that she had a severe allergy to dairy and nuts, and the staff reassured them that their food could be made without the allergens, a complaint shows.

As a result, Tangsuan reportedly ordered the following items from the menu:

  • “Sure I’m Frittered”
  • “Scallop Forest”
  • “This Shepherd Went Vegan”
  • “Onion Rings”

According to the lawsuit, Tangsuan asked the waiter several more times to make sure the food was allergen-free, but when the food came out, some of it didn’t have the “allergen-free flags” in them. The waiter guaranteed, however, that there were no allergens in the meals, the suit states.

After finishing her meal and leaving, Tangsuan continued shopping at Disney Springs. About 45 minutes later, she suffered a severe allergic reaction to the food while entering the nearby Planet Hollywood, the complaint explains.

She was taken to a hospital, but she ultimately died.

Months later, Tangsuan’s husband filed a lawsuit against Raglan Road and Disney, accusing both businesses of negligence in his wife’s death. He is seeking well over $50,000 in damages.

WHAT’S GOING ON NOW?

Court records released this month show that Disney’s attorneys filed a motion in June that Tangsuan’s husband must arbitrate his claims instead of going to court.

According to the records, the husband, Jeffrey Piccolo, reportedly agreed to arbitrate any dispute against Disney when he signed up for a free trial of Disney+ on his PlayStation in 2019. The arbitration agreement was listed in the terms and conditions of his Disney+ trial.

In addition, Piccolo used Disney’s website to purchase Epcot tickets before his wife died, which also acted as an agreement to arbitration, the motion argues.

“The Terms of Use, which were provided with the Subscriber Agreement, include a binding arbitration clause. The first page of the Subscriber Agreement states, in all capital letters, that ‘any dispute between You and Us, Except for Small Claims, is subject to a class action waiver and must be resolved by individual binding arbitration’.” Disney Motion

But Piccolo’s attorneys responded to that motion, calling the argument “fatally flawed.” The reasons given were as follows:

  • Disney didn’t initially raise arbitration as an affirmative defense when filing its Answer.
  • Piccolo signing up for a free trial of Disney+ or buying Epcot tickets wouldn’t necessarily bind Tangsuan’s estate to an arbitration agreement.
  • Disney’s motion is based on the “incredible argument” that anyone who signs up for a Disney+ account will have forever waived the right to a jury trial for themselves or any future estate to which they’re associated, regardless of how far removed the wrongful death lawsuit might be from the streaming service.
  • The Disney+ terms of agreement would only bind Piccolo to arbitration regarding issues involving the streaming service — not other Disney entities.
  • The Disney+ registration page didn’t expressly reference or link to the Disney Terms of Use, which is what the arbitration agreement falls under.
  • The arbitration agreement is invalid because the arbitration clauses Disney relies on are “unconscionable.”

A hearing has been scheduled for Disney’s motion in county court in Orlando on Oct. 2.

News 6 has reached out to Disney representatives for a statement on the ongoing litigation and received the following response:

“We are deeply saddened by the family’s loss and understand their grief. Given that this restaurant is neither owned nor operated by Disney, we are merely defending ourselves against the plaintiff’s attorney’s attempt to include us in their lawsuit against the restaurant.” Disney Spokesperson

'It's been a long trip': Phillies hoping to reset upon return home

Patrick Brown

PHOENIX -- It was a long road trip against some of the top teams in baseball for the Phillies.

After a 12-5 loss to the D-backs at Chase Field on Sunday, a return to Citizens Bank Park is just what the doctor ordered.

Alec Bohm continued his hot August while Kyle Schwarber, Brandon Marsh and Cal Stevenson each chipped in an RBI, but the Phillies’ lopsided loss on Sunday was their third straight defeat in the desert after winning the series opener on Thursday. They went 4-6 on the 10-game road trip against the Mariners, Dodgers and D-backs.

Philadelphia now returns home for six games just as its starting rotation is beginning to get healthy , a combination that could provide a much-needed spark for a team that’s 7-15 since the All-Star break.

“We’re not playing our best baseball right now,” said first baseman Bryce Harper. “We just have to keep going, understand we have a long season to go, and we just have to keep playing our game.”

The Phillies are 17 games over .500 at Citizens Bank Park (38-21), as opposed to 31-28 on the road. They now host two teams under .500: the Marlins (44-75) and the Nationals (54-65).

Sunday started off well enough, as Philadelphia jumped on D-backs starter Merrill Kelly courtesy of Bohm’s two-run double in the first. The offense added three runs in the seventh, but Arizona matched that output in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach.

Bohm was a bright spot throughout the trip, though, as the 28-year-old hit .318 (14-for-44) with five doubles and seven RBIs. He doubled three times in the Phillies’ four-game series against the D-backs.

That wasn’t enough for Philadelphia, though, which has allowed 23 runs in its last two games.

“We scored early and then we had some other chances too,” manager Rob Thomson said. “We just didn’t get it done.”

Starter Cristopher Sánchez allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings, marking the second time in three starts he has allowed at least six earned runs. The 27-year-old southpaw had a stellar June, allowing just six earned runs in 33 innings while recording 23 strikeouts, but has allowed 28 runs in 38 innings since July 4.

“I missed a lot of pitches,” Sánchez said. “I think it was just the location.”

The bullpen wasn’t much better on Sunday, though, allowing a combined six hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Rookie Max Lazar was the only reliever to go unscathed, and has pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless baseball since making his MLB debut on Saturday.

Philadelphia still leads the NL East by 7 1/2 games , and finished the season series against the D-backs at 3-4. The two teams met in the National League Championship Series in 2023, and the past weekend’s series could very well have been a preview of what’s to come this fall.

Before the Phillies can start thinking about October, though, they need to turn things around in August.

“It’s been a long trip,” Thomson said. “Let’s get home in front of our fan base and start winning some games and winning some series.”

Britain’s Violent Riots: What We Know

Officials had braced for more unrest on Wednesday, but the night’s anti-immigration protests were smaller, with counterprotesters dominating the streets instead.

A handful of protesters, two in masks, face a group of riot police officers with shields. In the background are a crowd, a fire and smoke in the air.

By Lynsey Chutel

After days of violent rioting set off by disinformation around a deadly stabbing rampage, the authorities in Britain had been bracing for more unrest on Wednesday. But by nightfall, large-scale anti-immigration demonstrations had not materialized, and only a few arrests had been made nationwide.

Instead, streets in cities across the country were filled with thousands of antiracism protesters, including in Liverpool, where by late evening, the counterdemonstration had taken on an almost celebratory tone.

Over the weekend, the anti-immigration protests, organized by far-right groups, had devolved into violence in more than a dozen towns and cities. And with messages on social media calling for wider protests and counterprotests on Wednesday, the British authorities were on high alert.

With tensions running high, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet held emergency meetings to discuss what has become the first crisis of his recently elected government. Some 6,000 specialist public-order police officers were mobilized nationwide to respond to any disorder, and the authorities in several cities and towns stepped up patrols.

Wednesday was not trouble-free, however.

In Bristol, the police said there was one arrest after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle and a bottle was thrown. In the southern city of Portsmouth, police officers dispersed a small group of anti-immigration protesters who had blocked a roadway. And in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where there have been at least four nights of unrest, disorder continued, and the police service said it would bring in additional officers.

But overall, many expressed relief that the fears of wide-scale violence had not been realized.

Here’s what we know about the turmoil in Britain.

Where has the unrest taken place?

Protesters over the weekend took to the streets of a dozen cities across Britain, most of them in England. Trouble broke out from Aldershot in the south to Sunderland in the north and Liverpool in the west. Belfast, in Northern Ireland, was also drawn into the fray.

In some cases, the protesters were merely unruly, but in others the violence was more pronounced.

Where arrests have been reported

On Sunday, rioters set upon a hotel that was housing asylum seekers in the town of Rotherham, in northern England, breaking windows before surging inside as the police struggled to control them. No guests were injured in the melee, the police said.

In Middlesbrough, a group of rioters, some masked, hurled bottles and rocks at officers. Cars were set on fire, and at least nine people were arrested. On Saturday, a library and a food bank were set ablaze in Liverpool as groups damaged and looted businesses, and in Hull, fires were set and storefronts smashed in the city center.

Dozens of police officers were injured, including some who required trips to the hospital.

What set off the protests?

The unrest began after a teenager wielding a knife attacked a children’s dance class early last week in the seaside town of Southport, which is near Liverpool. Three children were killed, and eight were wounded.

The suspect was born and raised in Britain, but online rumors soon circulated that he was an undocumented immigrant. To counter those false claims, the authorities took the unusual step of publicly identifying him. The BBC has reported that the suspect’s parents are from Rwanda. The police have not disclosed a motive for the stabbing attack.

But with migration a flashpoint issue in Britain, especially on the far right, the rumors were all it took to set off violence.

Extremist groups urged their followers to take to the streets, and on the day after the stabbings, they began to do so, starting in Southport.

How have the authorities responded?

The weekend riots prompted a heavy police response. Nearly 4,000 additional officers were deployed, a law enforcement association said. And a government order gave officers in some places special powers to disperse any gatherings or “antisocial behavior,” the police said in a statement .

More than 400 people have been arrested, and about 100 have been charged, Mr. Starmer said after an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday — the second in two days.

The prime minister, who has characterized the riots as “far-right thuggery,” encouraged prosecutors to name and shame those convicted to dissuade others from joining the violent rampages.

“I’m now expecting substantive sentencing before the end of the week,” Mr. Starmer said. “That should send a very powerful message to anybody involved, either directly or online, that you are likely to be dealt with within a week and that nobody, but nobody, should involve themselves in this disorder.”

BJ Harrington, the head of public order for Britain’s National Police Chiefs’ Council, said that online disinformation had been “a huge driver of this appalling violence.”

Intelligence teams, detectives and neighborhood officers, Mr. Harrington said, were working to identify the people fomenting the violence.

“They won’t win,” he said.

How are the authorities handling online incitement?

Social media has acted as an accelerant throughout the protests, with disinformation fueling far-right and anti-immigrant groups . Britain and other democracies have found that policing the internet is legally murky terrain, with individual rights and free speech protections balanced against a desire to block harmful material .

In his remarks on Tuesday, Mr. Starmer said that some arrests involved people accused of inciting violence online.

The first person to be convicted over online posts since the riots, according to the Crown Prosecution Service , was a 28-year-old man from Leeds who posted messages on Facebook about attacking a hotel that housed asylum seekers. It said that the man, Jordan Parlour, had pleaded guilty and been convicted of using threatening words or behavior to stir up racial hatred.

Mr. Starmer has called out social media companies over misinformation on their platforms, but holding them accountable could be tricky. Britain adopted a law last year that requires social media companies to introduce protections for child safety and to prevent and quickly remove illegal content like terrorism propaganda and revenge pornography. The law is less clear about how companies must treat misinformation and incendiary language.

What are the political implications?

The riots are the first political crisis for Mr. Starmer, who took office a month ago after his Labour Party defeated the Conservatives, who had been in government for 14 years.

While in power, the Conservatives tried to capitalize on public unhappiness over immigration, vowing to reduce it (though failing to do so). But in recent days they joined Labour in condemning the violent protests.

Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, now the opposition leader, said the unrest had “nothing to do with the tragedy in Southport.” The police, he said, have “our full support to deal with these criminals swiftly.”

How Important is Heartworm Prevention?

One of the most important things we as a rescue group learns from the adoption application process is how important heartworm preventative is to the potential adopter. We are able to determine through a vet check if your past pets were kept current on preventative, and if you plan to give your new family member a monthly preventative. We hear so often “oh my dog doesn’t need preventative because he/she only goes outside to run around and go to the restroom.” It only takes a second to be bit by an infected mosquito and then 6 months later your dog has full blown adult heartworms.

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria Immitis and the transmission of the worms is simply spread through the bite of a mosquito.

The dog is a natural host for the disease but it can also affect other household pets such as cats and ferrets. We recently had a kitty named Aurora test positive for heartworms and unfortunately there is not a clear treatment for cats like there is dogs. However, in cats they usually only harbor one to three worms and the worms do not live to reach the adult stage. RT4P prefers to keep our kitties safely indoors but if your kitty does like to spend time in the great outdoors we suggest they be put on a monthly preventative to keep them free of heartworm disease.

Heartworm prevention typically costs on average around $10 a month depending on the size of the dog. What a bargain to use preventative considering treating a Heartworm positive dog for the average dog owner can costs upwards of $500. If you have a busy lifestyle and you think you can’t remember to give it monthly there is another option for you. ProHeart 6 is an injection that can be administered by a Veterinarian which will protect your dog for 6 months. The costs of the ProHeart 6 injection is the equivalent of 6 monthly doses of preventative.

Road Trip 4 Paws has recently taken in several heartworm positive dogs and this is always an unexpected expense for the rescue. Aside from the additional cost involved we always dread the dogs having to go through the treatment because of the severity of the treatment and recovery process. It also delays by approximately 6 weeks their search for a forever home!

We always want the best for our furry family members so hopefully this information will serve as a reminder for the importance of monthly heartworm prevention. It is a very simple and inexpensive way to keep your pets safe and healthy.

Trump reiterates claim about helicopter trip but doesn’t provide records

The GOP nominee doubled down on an earlier claim that may instead involve a trip with former California governor Jerry Brown or with a former Los Angeles councilman.

Former president Donald Trump insisted again Friday that he took a dangerous helicopter ride with former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, telling the New York Times that he would release flight records.

Trump, who did not release the records, told reporters at a news conference Thursday that he had ridden in a helicopter with Brown, who dated Vice President Kamala Harris 25 years ago, claiming that Brown had criticized her during the flight.

Brown, who is Black, called Trump’s story “fiction .” Former California governor Jerry Brown, who is White, and the state’s current governor, Gavin Newsom, said they rode in a helicopter with Trump to survey the fire-devastated town of Paradise, Calif., in 2018, but they said Harris was not a topic of conversation and the landing was uneventful.

And late Friday night, Politico reported that Nate Holden, who is Black — a former Los Angeles council member who grew close to Trump when he tried to renovate the historic Ambassador Hotel in the 1990s — said he was the one in a helicopter with Trump when it almost crashed.

Trump claimed in the Times interview that he had “flight records of the helicopter” showing he was with Willie Brown and that he would release the records. The Times reported Trump said he was “probably going to sue” the news organization, according to an article written by longtime Trump reporter Maggie Haberman, and he responded mockingly to a request for the flight records by repeating it in a “singsong” voice.

The Times reported that Trump did not provide the records Friday night. On Saturday, campaign spokesman Steven Cheung shared a photo of a coffee-table book published last year in which Trump mentions the story of the ride with Willie Brown when The Washington Post asked for the helicopter records.

Trump’s dubious account comes less than a month after President Joe Biden , 81, left the presidential race amid concerns over his acuity after a damaging debate performance in June. Trump, 78, told more than 30,000 lies or falsehoods during his presidency and in recent weeks has lashed out as Harris, who is challenging him for the presidency, and who has drawn large crowds and enthusiasm among Democrats.

Trump made the angry call to the Times on Friday as his plane was diverted because of mechanical issues from landing in Bozeman, Mont., where he had a scheduled rally. Trump took another plane from Billings Logan International Airport to Bozeman, airport staff said.

At his rally, Trump brought up the call with Haberman. He did not offer any clarity about the helicopter story.

Reiterating a statement made Thursday, a spokesman for Newsom on Friday said Newsom, then governor-elect, was on a helicopter flight in 2018 with Jerry Brown; there was no emergency landing and Harris was not discussed. The spokesman also said that Trump repeatedly said he was worried about crashing and wrongly referred to the fire-ravaged town of Paradise as Pleasure on more than one occasion.

“It was a lively ride, but an utterly safe landing,” Jerry Brown said in an email through his spokesperson, adding that “the subject of Harris never came up.”

“I’m laughing about it,” Willie Brown told KPIX, CBS News’s Bay Area affiliate, on Friday , denying ever being on a helicopter with Trump. Brown enthusiastically praised Harris as highly qualified for the presidency and mocked Trump for making up the story.

In the Politico report, Holden says he met Trump at Trump Tower, en route to Atlantic City, where they were going to tour the developer’s brand new Taj Mahal casino in what he remembers to be 1990. Barbara Res, Trump’s former executive vice president of construction and development, told Politico that she remembers the flight, which she wrote about in a book, and that Holden, not Brown, was on board. She said the helicopter had to make an emergency landing due to instrument failure.

“Willie is the short Black guy living in San Francisco,” Holden told Politico. “I’m a tall Black guy living in Los Angeles.”

“I guess we all look alike,” Holden added with a laugh.

During his Thursday news conference, Trump first brought the story up with his usual dramatic flair and insisted the helicopter trip was a dangerous mission.

“I went down in a helicopter with him,” Trump said of Brown at his Florida resort. “We thought maybe this is the end. … So I know him pretty well. I mean, I haven’t seen him in years. But he told me terrible things about her.”
