Province cooks up new centre for tourism, culinary arts

Students and B.C.’s food industry will benefit from the new Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism once it opens on the Okanagan College Kelowna campus, a centrally located school in the heart of wine country.

The centre will focus on addressing the labour shortage in food and tourism, supporting homegrown education in culinary arts, local food and beverage production, and hospitality services.

“The tourism and hospitality sectors are facing challenges in finding and keeping skilled workers, and Okanagan College is a leading provider of culinary and tourism programming in the province,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “This investment will ensure people can access world-class training supported by industry in the Okanagan, and can then go on to pursue a rewarding, meaningful career in the region’s equally outstanding hospitality industry.”

The Province is providing Okanagan College with $44.8 million for the new Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism, which will include modern teaching spaces, food labs, beverage research and development facilities, and common spaces. The centre will bring together all food, wine, and tourism programming on campus. It will also be home to the Okanagan Chef School and the college’s fully functioning, student-staffed restaurant, Infusions. The new centre will also allow Okanagan College to expand their culinary enrolment by more than 125 students a year, and hospitality and tourism enrolment by 450 students per year.

“Preparing the next generation of local food and beverage leaders is important for securing B.C.’s future in sustainable food production and promoting the Okanagan as a destination for culinary experiences,” said Pam Alexis, Minister for Agriculture and Food. “The new Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism will provide students with the knowledge and experience they need for a career that explores and celebrates the possibilities, products and people in B.C.’s farming community.”

Okanagan College, with campuses throughout the Okanagan Valley and as far as Revelstoke, has strong connections to sustainable and eco-friendly orchards and farms in the region, providing students with opportunities to learn through farm-to-fork and grape-to-glass practices, teaching the importance of sustainability and local supply chains. The centre will be the first of its kind for collaboration between students and businesses in the food, beverage, hospitality and resort sectors. This will expand opportunities for students to pursue vibrant hospitality careers, as well as help meet projected demand for these skills in the province’s growing tourism and hospitality sector.

“The Okanagan Valley is a prime spot for agri-tourism,” said Lana Popham, Minister for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “The Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism will help meet demand for skills in the hospitality and tourism industry ensuring that British Columbia remains a world-class destination for residents and the many visitors looking to return to B.C. for years to come.”

Neil Fassina, president, Okanagan College, said: “Being located in the Okanagan Valley, one of the leading food and wine destinations in North America, we are at a competitive advantage to deliver exceptional training and education in food, wine and tourism. Through this centre, we can expand our post-secondary programming and work with partners in new ways that benefit students in their careers, while supporting local and regional business. We are thrilled to be working with government, Indigenous communities and industry partners to continue elevating the Okanagan’s reputation as a world-class destination – both for food and beverages, and relevant learning opportunities.”

Investing in Okanagan College’s new Centre for Food, Wine and Tourism is a part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready Plan, which is making education and training more accessible, affordable, and relevant to help businesses grow and prepare British Columbians for the jobs of tomorrow.

Okanagan College is a highly renowned public college located in British Columbia, Canada, which offers an impressive portfolio of higher education programmes, including degrees, associate degrees, diplomas and certificates.

The college has four picturesque campus locations, with the largest in Kelowna and others in Penticton, Vernon and Salmon Arm. Okanagan College is ideal for international students who wish to obtain a high-quality Canadian education, push the boundaries of their academic study, and open doors to an exciting array of professional opportunities.

The college has more than 2,000 international students already enrolled, representing over 70 different countries worldwide, and offers pathway education to some of the top universities in Canada. Students come to Okanagan to either complete a credential or to transfer to a top Canadian university. Students leave with the ability and the confidence to thrive in degree level studies.

Okanagan College has excellent facilities for both learning and recreation. Campuses are designed to be environmentally sustainable with a focus on health and wellbeing, both through the support systems offered to students and the great range of activities on campus and in the community.

The Okanagan College Success Centre is free for all students to attend. It provides help and guidance to enhance academic skills, ensuring that every student has the tools to pursue the career of their dreams, while building the necessary skills to succeed in it.

There is always something happening at Okanagan College to improve life or offer new ways of learning.

In Fall 2024 the college will offer new on-campus housing at the Salmon Arms, Vernon, and Kelowna campuses, giving students more options for local accommodation. All accommodation is comfortable, safe, and stylish, as well as located within a convenient distance of students’ lecture halls and classrooms.

Planning is well underway for a new wellness and recreation centre at the Kelowna campus that will have a full gymnasium, indoor walking track, fitness suite, and host intramural sports. It is expected to open in 2026. This new centre will allow students to develop themselves through sports and exercise, building a healthy routine and socialising with like-minded individuals.

Students can check the Okanagan College website to keep up to date with the latest events surrounding the college, including student social events.

Students will be expected to provide evidence of their ability to pay for their studies. Tuition fees vary by chosen program and additional fees are applicable. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will require additional evidence of finances to support living costs in addition to tuition. Prospective students can go online to find more information about study permits and the correct documentation needed to study at Okanagan College.

Students who undertake three courses are considered to be full-time students, and will be permitted under their study permit to work off-campus, if meeting all other criteria. Full details of the off-campus work program can be found online, and doing this is a great way for Okanagan College students to subsidise the cost of their tuition.

Okanagan College does not provide entrance scholarships, bursaries, or loans. However, students are encouraged to explore external funding options such those that are funded by the Government of Canada. These additional finding opportunities are plentiful, and the Okanagan College student support team can help international students to build and submit an application.

English as second language programs are available for students from non-English speaking countries if they do not meet the minimum English requirement for academic programs.

Teaching quality

The quality of a student’s education doesn’t just hinge on their own initiative, but on that of the teacher. This is why Okanagan College hires only those with genuine industry experience to help develop students’ understanding of their chosen subject, providing real-world experience and perspective.

However, it is not simply about choosing those who have worked in their field before – the faculty at the college are also excellent at delivering their course material in a way that is engaging and exciting, helping students to remain passionate about their subjects and develop key insights of their own.

Students will learn in a variety of ways, including practical hands-on learning where appropriate, especially with trades qualifications. Students will be prepared by the college to take their next steps confidently, whether that is directly into work or into their next qualification.

Each campus has a library, open early until late, 7 days a week (6 days a week for the Salmon Arm campus) and there are study rooms available when students need quiet spaces or group study locations.
