Lido Restaurant at the Surf Club

The best brunch in Miami, from garden patios to fancy hotels and breezy waterfronts

Book reservations early and don't forget to set your alarm—the best brunch in Miami is worth it.

Studies have shown that Miami knows how to brunch better than any other city. We should note that said studies were not conducted by proper research centers but rather by a team of hungover journalists in dire need of good eggs and a bloody mary. Over several years of indulging in breakfast-lunch hybrids in the early weekend hour of around 2pm (basically dawn in Miami), we have confidently determined the finest places to brunch in a city that makes brunch an unofficial sport (along with day drinking and al fresco dining ) . We're laying it all out below in our guide to the very best places to brunch in Miami, the unscientifically official Brunch Capital of the Planet.

Top brunch spots in Miami

Jaya at the Setai

1.  Jaya at the Setai

  • Restaurants
  • Contemporary Asian
  • South Beach
  • price 4 of 4

At Jaya, the tables spread out in a charming open-air courtyard surrounding the pool. On Sundays, there’s a jazz band on a stage right there in the middle of the water. You’ll see people in their best flowy dresses and sports jackets. The food, from executive chef Vijayudu Veena, is far from the standard fare, with everything from Indian to Indonesian, and was recently updated to include Peking duck and grilled-to-order stations. The drinks are, of course, endless: The $105 price includes bottomless champagne, white wine, rośe and a mojito bar.

https://media.timeout.com/images/105818899/image.jpg

2.  Maty's

  • price 3 of 4

All the reasons we love Maty’s at every other time of the day are repeated at brunch, when chef Valerie Chang works her magic on brunch classics. Think avocado toast with a nice tang from pickled onions; shrimp and grits with a Peruvian barbecue sauce and sweet corn; and a fried chicken with housemade donuts that’ll feed the table. While Maty’s can get pricey for dinner, brunch here is reasonable, and at some points downright inexpensive (that platter-sized serving of chicken is just $28), meaning you should probably order a second round of the very spicy bloody marys.

Rosie's

3.  Rosie's

  • Soul and southern American
  • Little Haiti / Lemon City
  • price 2 of 4

Rosie’s is the bountiful collaboration between Michelin-trained chef Akino West and his partner, creative and hospitality director, Jamila West. The Southern-inspired menu with hints of Italian flavors includes some of the best breakfast dishes in Miami, such as as deviled eggs topped with crispy chicharrones; burrata topped with fresh mango from the Wests’ own backyard; and a hangover-curing pastrami hash with sweet potato sformato, charred green onion gremolata and goat cheese.

La Mar

4.  La Mar

  • Brickell Key

The restaurant with the best view in Miami and the city's finest representation of Peruvian Nikkei puts out a brunch that ought to be on the list of anyone who relishes a midday splurge. Aside from executive chef Diego Oka buffet, the brunch includes a full entree from the dinner menu and also a tower of desserts delivered tableside. The $135 price includes endless pours of many drink options, including the house specialty pisco sour, a fresh, foamy cocktail that'll get your Sunday started right.

Phuc Yea

5.  Phuc Yea

The Viet-Cajun spot is constantly reinventing itself and its menu, especially brunch, which changes often and never ceases to surprise and amaze. For its latest offering, Phuc Yea reimagines French toast by serving up crispy croissants with a bourbon custard and a banh mi with popcorn shrimp and sriracha aioli.

Sadelle's

6.  Sadelle's

Major Food Group’s buzzy brunch spot balances a can’t-go-wrong menu with the vibe everyone needs for that cure-the-hangover meal. That includes the Instagrammable bagel tower with artfully arranged smoked fish salads, lox and sliced cucumbers and tomatoes. A stack of bagels is served alongside it. There are plenty of lunch-y items, like salads and oversize deli sandwiches, but the breakfast classics are where it's at. From cheese blintzes and custardy french toast to blueberry pancakes, there's something sweet to satisfy every type of early morning dessert craving.

Sweet Liberty Drinks & Supply Company

7.  Sweet Liberty Drinks & Supply Company

One of the best bars in Miami just so happens to serve brunch—and a damn good one at that. Available Sundays from noon to 4pm, the New Orleans-inspired menu nods to the Big Easy with dishes like warm beignets, chicken and waffles and bananas foster pancakes (one of the best stacks we've had). You'll also find afternoon delights like fresh oysters and cauliflower nachos, a Sweet Liberty staple. For drinks, find an extensive menu of potent brunch cocktails like the the Breakfast Martini and the French 75.

Brasserie Laurel

8.  Brasserie Laurel

Brasserie Laurel pays homage to the French brasserie, and its brunch menu stays true to that theme, albeit with everything bumped up here and there. The omelet gets a hit of caviar to go with its goat cheese, herbs and crème fraîche. The burger is a knife-and-fork affair with gruyere, caramelized onions and an au poivre sauce souped over the entire thing. This is a more serious affair than some of the boozy brunches on this list, but there’s a full page of absinthe to get your day started with Parisian hallucinations.

Amelia's 1931

9.  Amelia's 1931

Eileen Andrade's speakeasy-style ode to the Cuban dishes of her grandmother, Amelia's 1931, serves a spot-on brunch on Sundays. The Cuban Croque Madame is like the classic French dish married a Cuban dude, with ham croquetas on grilled sourdough, melty gruyere and a sunny side-up egg. The Timba Pancakes add sweetened condensed milk, toasted coconut and guava marmalade. And the Braised Lechon Hash combines pork shoulder with an aji amarillo mash with gravy and eggs.

Lido Restaurant at the Surf Club

10.  Lido Restaurant at the Surf Club

When the day calls for casual beachside elegance, look no further than brunch at the Lido Restaurant at the Four Seasons in Surfside. There's an option to dine indoors, but if the sun's out, you'll want to find a seat on the breezy terrace with views of the Surf Club's pristine grounds and the ocean just beyond. The coastal Italian-inspired menu features fare as light and airy as the restaurant itself, like the yellowtail crudo in an "Amalfi" lemon dressing and the branzino is a briny pantesca sauce. On Sundays, graze from the brunch buffet for $105.

Stiltsville Fish Bar

11.  Stiltsville Fish Bar

Sunset Harbour’s stylish fish shack makes an excellent case for tucking into a big bowl of oysters before noon. The raw bar offerings are extensive and super fresh as most of the seafood served is sourced locally. For brunch-y options from the sea, try the crab truffle omelet. It’s reminiscent of Chinese-American crab rangoons and filled with chunky lump meat, local black truffle cheese and melted leeks.

Krüs Kitchen

12.  Krüs Kitchen

  • Coconut Grove

Krüs Kitchen is the airy, light-filled loft suspended above Los Félix, Coconut Grove's Michelin-starred Mexican restaurant. For brunch, chef Sebastian Vargas calls on his experience working at Michelin-starred restaurants like Osteria Francescana in Italy and Eleven Madison Park in New York to create bright, flavorful dishes like a lobster salad with buttermilk leche de tigre and the smoked coconut rice with wild caught crab and cilantro chimichurri. Cofounder Josh Hackler takes command of Krüs Wine, a natural, organic and biodynamic program based on seasonality with a focus on the industry's up-and-coming tastemakers and innovators.

Blue Collar

13.  Blue Collar

Danny Serfer’s diner serves delicious hangover-curing, comfort food. There’s the usual “eggy stuff” and “syrupy stuff,” like a bacon-egg-and-cheese burrito the size of your head. Blue Collar’s famous dry-aged cheeseburger is always on the menu and is always a good idea.

Green Street Cafe

14.  Green Street Cafe

More than a restaurant, Green Street is a gathering place for a confluence of cyclists, dog parents, families and people seeking a shady spot where to enjoy Miami’s sunny weather. The nicer the day, the longer the wait time, though the bar serves cocktails and food on a first-come, first-served basis. The view and experience are quintessential Miami— lots of well-dressed people lingering over breakfast fare and sipping mimosas along a busy sidewalk. People watching is superb and so is the variety of bloody marys.

Hutong

15.  Hutong

Have all dim sum at Hutong’s weekend brunch (Saturday, Sunday noon–3pm)—practically every dumpling and appetizer bite on the dinner menu is served at this sumptuous, bottomless brunch. In addition to the free-flowing spring rolls, bao buns and bubbles, brunch includes a serving of the restaurant’s signature Peking duck as well as dessert. If getting up early isn’t your thing, good news: Hutong does a Dark Brunch on the third Thursday of every month.

Joliet

16.  Joliet

Like a locals-only spot in New Orleans’ Garden District, Joliet in South Beach has a laid-back vibe that fits well with a lazy Sunday spent brunching. There’s no bottomless offering, but the cocktails are of the classic kind, like an espresso martini and bloody marys. There’s a Cajun twist to much of the menu, including barbecue shrimp and grits, cornmeal johnny cakes with smoked lemon butter and a cream-cheese-glazed cinnamon roll that would feed the entire block—or just you.

Contessa Miami

17.  Contessa Miami

  • Design District

The aesthetic of Contessa is like if Sofia Coppola and Wes Anderson co-directed a satirical family drama set in 18th-century Italy. It's a lavish layering of emerald marble, pink velvet and soft Venetian plaster; crystal chandeliers and bronze sconces; and a company of elegant waitstaff dancing around the two-story dining room and terrace. Contessa's menu of Italian classics is elevated by high-quality ingredients, like the daily imported burrata served in a chunky pomodorini sauce. The avocado bruschetta is a refreshing riff on a staple brunch dish, topped with almonds, tomato and basil. Highlights from the dinner menu are also available during the day, like the lobster capellini and the veal Milanese.

Planta

18.  Planta

  • South of Fifth

This stylish plant-based restaurant that started in the South of Fifth ’hood and spawned sister locations across South Florida serves french toast and waffles that won’t completely wreck your waistline. Think of Planta as an upgrade from your usual hippy, vegan dive. It’s sexy, polished and will woo you with tasty dupes of meaty dishes and spiked fresh-pressed juices. Nothing’s basic here, not even the scramble, which arrives topped with fresh truffle shavings.

Hampton Social

19.  Hampton Social

This mini-chain out of Chicago seemed to have Miami figured out with its “rosé all day” slogan. Brunch at the  second-floor Mary Brickell Village location hits all the regular notes but with a few clever twists, like a luxe monkey bread made of croissants. For those who want less waffle with their chicken and waffles, try the fried cutlet topped with an egg and a side of French toast. Uniquely, Hampton Social’s online menu allows guests to leave reviews, so you can let them know if you didn’t dig the cauliflower rice under the steak and eggs. We’d suggest writing the review before finishing the $48 frosé that comes in a seashell the size of a punchbowl.

Level 6 Rooftop

20.  Level 6 Rooftop

  • West Coconut Grove

The rooftop clubstaurant six floors up from Amal in Coconut Grove sticks to its Spanish theme for a weekend brunch. There’s Spanish brioche french toast with ricotta cheese and strawberries, and an eggs benedict with manchego biscuit and chorizo. Cocktails keep to the Iberian theme, like a sangria with lychee and lavender. While there's no bottomless option, there is a roped-off VIP section on the other side of the bar for those who take day drinking seriously.

Osaka

21.  Osaka

The brunch at Osaka, the internationally renowned eatery from Lima, leans heavily on its classic Nikkei dishes, such as the crowd-pleasing kaisen seafood platter. There's a kani bun made with snow crab, japanese milk bread and yuzu acevichada sauce, plus the assemble-yourself chicharron bao setto, a crispy pork belly bun. A smattering of breakfast-y things have Osaka’s stamp all over them: the caco matcha french toast with yuzu custard, miso toffee, matcha and cornflake crumble is an instant favorite.

Beaker & Gray

22.  Beaker & Gray

  • Cocktail bars

The Wynwood restaurant extends its notable mixology program through to brunch, serving proper cocktails that exceed the standard Bloody Mary. For $48, there's free-flowing sparkling wine or mimosas (pro tip: order yours with freshly juiced watermelon). Food runs the gamut but skews mostly Latin with dishes like chilaquiles and a guava skillet cookie.

Novikov Miami

23.  Novikov Miami

This buzzy Chinese-Japanese restaurant serves a decadent Sunday brunch menu that's peppered with many of its dinnertime favorites, such as dumplings and sashimi, plus unlimited cocktails, champagne, rosé and sake. Whether you opt for the $99 signature option or splurge on the $199 premium, you'll get a selection of shareable appetizers and sushi for the table, your choice of entrée (each tier gets different options to choose from) and an impressive dessert platter that changes weekly depending on chef's inspiration.

Il Mulino New York

24.  Il Mulino New York

  • Sunny Isles Beach

There's a very old-school element to everything at Il Mulino, which began its life in 1981 in Greenwich Village and now has multiple locations. The Sunny Isles outpost takes over a sliver of space inside the Acqualina Resort and also sports a charming patio around a fountain out back with expansive views of the ocean. The $115 brunch includes endless Bloody Marys, mojitos and sangrias, along with access to charcuterie, seafood, crudo and house-made pastries.

Prime Fish

25.  Prime Fish

Part of Myles Chefetz’s Prime restaurant empire, Prime Fish is known for its massive plates of seafood, heaping piles of East and West Coast oysters, Maine lobster cocktails and much more. But it’s equally touted for its brunch, which is one of the better values in town. The $59 spread includes bottomless mimosas, an entree and unlimited helpings of its buffet stacked with sweet and savory options.

OL'DAYS - Farm to Table Midtown

26.  OL'DAYS - Farm to Table Midtown

Ol’Days sisters and owners Martina and Juliana Fracchia take diners back to their childhood by infusing their South American roots into many of the menu’s farm-to-table-inspired items. Whet your appetite with a Golden Arepa or the lemony guacamole with warm pita. Or indulge in a Lomito From My Childhood, a sandwich of tender beef tenderloin, homemade corn mayo and fried eggs. From the creative mocktail menu to the cold-pressed juices and organic bowls, Ol’ Days encourages an “eat well, be well” lifestyle in a warm, aesthetically elevated atmosphere. (Though they also serve alcoholic beverages). Linger for that much-needed catch-up with friends or pop in for a stellar coffee and a brief escape from the daily grind.

https://media.timeout.com/images/106095766/image.jpg

27.  Batch Gastropub

With seemingly more TVs than chairs, Batch is a favorite of sports fans looking for a good view of the game and a solid meal to enjoy while they watch. Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays and features a $25 bottomless drink special (mimosas, sangria and bellinis for up to 90 minutes) and plenty of food egg dishes, lunch-y items and desserts that pass as breakfast to choose from.

Rusty Pelican

28.  Rusty Pelican

This Key Biscayne institution is a no-brainer for people who pick their restaurants based on atmosphere and views—the vibe here is lively and the scenery beyond picturesque. Plus, there’s outdoor seating for folks looking to get their fill of that waterfront dining experience that’s surprisingly hard to come by in Miami, no matter how many miles of shoreline this city boasts. The á-la-carte menu reflects the location, with plenty of yummy seafood options like crab huevos rancheros and salmon and eggs.

Time Out tip: The brunch board is great for couples who want to share a few things without ordering half the menu. At $135 for two, the smorgasbord includes lobster benedict and fried chicken, among other dishes.

Bulla Gastrobar

29.  Bulla Gastrobar

  • Coral Gables

This lively Spanish restaurant with three locations (Coral Gables, Doral and The Falls) serves a mean brunch, complete with bottomless sangrias and mimosas for an extra $20. Instead of a one-and-done meal, Bulla lets you choose three courses for brunch ($30). In a group? Order one of everything and have a tapas-style feast featuring flatbreads, a pork hash and a yummy brioche dessert topped with mascarpone ice cream.

American Social

30.  American Social

Get the atmosphere of a sports bar, the craft beer selection of a gastropub and the views of a waterfront restaurant at this Brickell mainstay on the Miami River. American Social serves, well, American food with an emphasis on comfort classics—find chicken and waffles, steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, and more. It’s a wide-ranging menu with an even larger list of cocktails, wine and beers to choose from. Go hungry and thirsty, and preferably with a D.D. on speed dial.

Threefold Cafe

31.  Threefold Cafe

Not all brunch needs to feel like you’re competing in the Binge-Drinking Olympics. Sometimes the more chill scene at Threefold Cafe sounds ideal for a Sunday morning—with locations now in Coral Gables and Brickell. Apoached, farm-fresh egg served over crusty bread smothered in smashed avocado (the Smashed Avo) and a cold-brewed coffee is all you need to feel like you’re winning at brunch. Going for gold? Order a side of bacon and the morning monkey (bread) for the table (or yourself).

Zuma

32.  Zuma

This bougie, boozy brunch is worth every penny. Zuma’s lavish buffet (priced from $98 to well beyond that with champagne, truffles and caviar add-ons) aims to please, serving up the restaurant's signature times, plus a bonus entrée per person. From sushi and sashimi to robata-grilled veggies and small plates like glazed pork ribs—it’s all there and you can order as many times as you’d like.

Yardbird Southern Table & Bar

33.  Yardbird Southern Table & Bar

This downhome Southern restaurant in SoBe has been around longer than most in the neighborhood, and it’s never fallen out of favor with tourists. All signs of enduring popularity point to its signature fried chicken with honey hot sauce plus classic dishes like the fried green tomato BLT. The menu is as large as the crowds that gather, so take your time and be sure to reserve your table in advance.

Baia Beach Club Restaurant

34.  Baia Beach Club Restaurant

  • Mediterranean

Brunch with a view at Baia Beach Club, where lunch and breakfast are not mutually exclusive meals. Available on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm, the a-la-carte menu includes classic omelets, Benedicts and avocado toast as well as whole branzino, a seafood tower and a massive tomahawk steak. Ranging from $15 to $40 depending on your preference, add-on bottomless mimosa, Bloody Marys, sangrias or rosé.

12 Best Brunches in Miami

By Sara Liss and Jennifer M. Wood

Juvia Miami Beach Restaurant Exterior

Brunch is more than just a meal: It’s a state of mind. A time when downing copious amounts of Champagne (chased with orange juice, of course) and oysters is acceptable, nay, encouraged, a core element of any properly executed plan. Miami is no stranger to this daytime hedonism: Plenty of indulgent, scrumptious, creative brunches have popped up around the city, beckoning with promises of hot chicken and waffles, Cuban delicacies, nutella pancakes, and more than one buffets you should not dismiss as just another all you can eat affair. Here are the best spots high and low to while away the weekends, in our list of the best brunch in Miami.

Read on for our complete Miami travel guide .

Fooqs Restaurant Miami Interior

Fooq's Arrow

Restaurateur David Foulquier took inspiration from his Persian and French roots when imagining this intimate downtown spot that brings in crowds following performances at the nearby Adrienne Arsht Center. The food from chef Clark Bowen keeps up the intrigue, with ever-changing dishes that dart around the globe: think crispy rice bowls with poached egg and labneh, or a spicy bucatini amatriciana.

Juvia Miami Beach Restaurant Exterior

Juvia Arrow

At this ultramodern rooftop restaurant over the Herzog & de Meuron-designed parking garage on Lincoln Road , the views are compelling, the decor is slick and comfortable, and the feeling is singular for South Beach. The menu, which includes both breakfast- and lunch-oriented plates, begins with a choice of a salad made with avocado, tomato, and Hawaiian hearts of palm; pink shrimp acevichado; beef carpaccio; or granola with yogurt, fresh fruit, and honey. Then, opt for one of the following: a smoked salmon eggs Benedict; branzino a la plancha; truffle spinach-mushroom quiche; or grilled skirt steak. Save room for dessert, with choices of hazlenut lemon bar or chocolate tarte.

Miami Three Brunch

Three Arrow

At Three, in Wynwood , a well-thought out menu of creatively reinvented brunch staples includes Huevos Rancheros "Miami Style" (fried eggs, black bean muñeta, chorizo, caramelized plantains), the tilefish hash (roasted peppers, bacalao, crispy potatoes, and a fried egg), and buttermilk fried chicken over brioche French toast. Even the ubiquitous avocado toast gets an upgrade with vadouvan yogurt, finger lime, shaved fennel, and herbs. The restaurant is easy and well-priced enough to be a weekly stop, but stylish and charming enough to impress a date or visitors.

Zuma Miami Brunch

The Miami version of Chef Rainer Becker’s famed izakaya restaurant serves sleek and modern Japanese small plates to a celebrity-filled room. A regular stable of customers come here as much for the buzzy atmosphere as the consistently executed menu of bold flavors and shareable plates. Start off with the suzuki no sashimi (seabass sashimi with yuzu, salmon roe, and truffle oil). Then, order something from the robata grill or a signature dish like roasted lobster with shizo-ponzu butter. Each plate pairs perfectly with wine from the 350-plus bottle list, plus sake and yuzu-heavy cocktails.

Le Zoo Miami Restaurant Exterior

Le Zoo Arrow

Stephen Starr's Le Zoo has been given the bistro treatment, with brass fixtures, mosaic tile floors, wood paneling, and French magazine collages from the 1960s all coming together to result in a polished, La Vie en Rose feel. The food—traditional French dishes like coq au vin, beef bourguignon, onion soup gratinée—is as classic as the decor. Grab a seat on the patio if you can: With its tiny round tables, blue and red rattan chairs, and a whimsical Le Zoo sign, the restaurant has some of the best outdoor space outside of South Beach .

Cafe La Trova Brunch Miami

Cafe La Trova Arrow

James Beard Award-winner Michelle Bernstein teamed up with master mixologist Julio Cabrera to create Cafe La Trova, this killer Cuban spot on the famed Calle Ocho in Miami's Little Havana . Vintage furniture, black-and-white photos, and a 1950' car (perfect for Instagram photos) create an Old Havana feel that's enhanced by the bongo-heavy live bands that occupy the restaurant's small stage. The energy is bustling and festive, and the crowd is always up for dancing.

Novikov Miami Brunch

Novikov Arrow

The Miami location of London's Novikov is a study in downtown opulence, from the Adam Tihany–designed dining room to the market produce and seafood display in a glass-enclosed room. Brunch, a three-course menu ($23), includes soup and a selection from the dim sum cart, with bites like chicken-and-morel siu mai, corn-and-saffron dumplings, and shrimp-and-cilantro purses. A final course allows for entrees like grilled branzino, Peking Duck, and chicken chow mein. This is a spot full of well-heeled patrons, so be prepared to see more than a couple Bentleys.

Bird Bone Restaurant Miami Interior

Bird & Bone Arrow

Those looking for hot chicken south of Nashville would do well to make a trip to chef Richard Hales's rustic restaurant in the mid-century Confidante Hotel . Wash it all down with bottomless brunch, which includes mimosas, Bloody Marys, and apple cider sangria. The menu is a mixture of Hales's signature dinner plates and some lighter, healthier options; fresh-pressed juices and oatmeal are paired with waffles, pancakes, and eggs. For the ultimate blend of sweet and savory, opt for the hot chicken and waffles, it's got the makings of a perfect Sunday morning feast.

Default

The Deck at Island Gardens Arrow

Situated on the super-yacht marina on Watson Island about 15 minutes from South Beach , this spot is al fresco perfection. You've got views of Miami's downtown skyline far off, views of luxurious yachts up-close, and all is surrounded by azure water. It's basically the opening shot of every 2000s music video set in Miami. The brunch buffet is a family friendly standout. Its Mediterranean-influenced spread comes in at $65 per person, and offers multiple stations stocked with a variety of hot and cold plates. At the breakfast station you'll find made-to-order omelets and pancakes, and at the carving station hearty cuts of rib eye, roasted chicken, and salmon filets. The salads are fresh and creative, like roasted eggplant drizzled in tahini, sprinkled with pomegranate seeds, topped with tabouli, and mixed with marinated vegetables. The massive dessert display has dainty cupcakes, multi-layer cakes, pies, and brownies.

Morgans Miami Brunch

Morgans Arrow

For over a decade, Morgans has developed a loyal local following driven mostly by word-of-mouth, and it's not hard to see why; it's a spot that offers a staggering assortment of brunch goodies (think everything from Boursin egg sandwiches, to mascarpone-and-raspberry-stuffed French toast) in a seriously cute 1930's house that the owners have outfitted with mod furnishings, and polished concrete floors. Its also got a huge wrap-around porch with extra seating and communal tables that practically begs for a brunch spread.

La Mar Restaurant Miami Interior

La Mar By Gastón Acurio Arrow

The dining room at Gastón Acurio's Peruvian restaurant, inside Brickell Key's Mandarin Oriental, Miami , is awash in shades of watery greens, sandy grays, and beiges—the perfect complement to its waterfront views. The vibe is glitzy but comfortable, and the brunch buffet, served every Sunday, is an epic parade of tiraditos, ceviches, causas, anticuchos, and larger “Peruvian specialities.” If you're unsure about just what something exactly is, just ask: in addition to clearing plates with ballet-like precision, waiters here are happy to get into the weeds of the less familiar dishes.

Scarpetta Miami Brunch

Scarpetta Arrow

Scott Conant's glossy Miami outpost of his well-known New York City Italian restaurant is just as fresh as it was when it opened in 2008. The big draw at brunch is probably the buffet, which consists of a raw bar brimming with oysters and stone crabs, a made-to-order frittata station, Italian meats and cheeses, just to get started. A la carte entrées include lobster Benedict, chicken parm, and filet mignon, plus tableside Scarpetta classics like tomato-basil spaghetti and foie gras ravioli. Desserts include cups of mini panna cotta and rice pudding with a toppings bar. If you want to feel like the party from Saturday night is continuing on into Sunday morning, this is the place.

Are you a nudist? Knitter? Golden Girls fan? There’s a cruise for that.

Whether you’re a swinger or just want to practice your golf swing, theme cruises have something for everyone.

brunch cruise in miami

Kaity Talley saw the announcement and knew she had to get on board: A cruise exclusively for Hallmark Christmas movie fans? With cookie decorating, tree lighting, movie marathons and karaoke ?

“I got super lucky,” said Talley, 36, of Ontario, Calif. She landed a booking time that got her a spot on the cruise that turned out to be Taylor-Swift-concert- level popular. After it sold out quickly, organizers added a second voyage, which also sold out.

Talley, a Costco manager who also makes TikToks about cruises, expects to bring an entire Christmas wardrobe, ugly sweaters and all: “I’m going to be very corny on this cruise.”

The Hallmark cruise will make its maiden voyage in November, but it’s hardly the first event to gather an extremely niche community of fans and send them out to sea. Theme cruises have catered to groups as diverse as cat lovers , headbangers , Trekkies , conservative activists and zombie aficionados .

There are clothing-optional cruises, faith-based cruises, swingers cruises and cruises for people who want to practice their golf swing .

“If there’s something out there that people like to do, there’s probably a cruise about it,” said Chris Gray Faust, executive director of the news and review site Cruise Critic .

Theme cruises can take many forms, from a small group tucked into a larger sailing to a full-ship takeover. Some are put on by the cruise lines, but most are organized by a travel agency or production company that blocks rooms and venues or charters the entire ship. Those sailings must be purchased through that third party.

Trips are often scheduled during off-peak times, such as January through March or October and November. Prices are higher than a standard cruise, generally reflecting the extra programming or additional perks that passengers get.

Experts say specialty sailings have exploded in recent years as cruise lines have expanded and consumers have sought out more meaningful ways to travel.

“Overall, the travel industry is getting so much more experiential in a number of ways, and theme cruises are the ultimate experiential vacation,” said Chris Hearing, a partner and executive director at Entertainment Cruise Productions , a major organizer of theme cruises. “You get immersed, in our case, in week-long theme cruises where from the moment you walk on the ship, you are surrounded by people that are completely into Star Trek or Comic-Con or motorcycles or ’80s or ’90s music.”

Another producer, Sixthman , got its start in 2001 with a rock-themed event featuring Sister Hazel. This year, the group will pull off 23 cruise events, and the schedule calls for 27 next year, said CEO Jeff Cuellar.

A gateway for cruise newcomers

As the cruise industry builds more ships and tries to cultivate new audiences to fill them, Gray Faust said theme cruises often serve as an entry point.

“It brings a lot of first-time cruisers into the fold,” she said. “They’re fans of whatever the theme is. The fact that it’s on a cruise is almost secondary.”

Howard Moses, a travel adviser, created a site called themecruisefinder with a business partner several years ago and said there are more than 700 cruises listed at any given time, from small groups to full-ship charters.

“It has blossomed in the last I would say 10 to 12 years,” he said.

Talley, who booked the Hallmark Christmas cruise, said theme cruises got her hooked on sailing. She spoke to The Washington Post from Miami after departing a chef-focused cruise and right before boarding a regular sailing on another cruise line. She has been on the Sail Across the Sun cruise, featuring Train and several other acts, four times.

“There’s just concerts happening the entire time,” she said.

Swifties, Trekkies and crafters

Some event production companies sell the opportunity to be in close quarters with the objects of fan affection. Sixthman, which is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, pitches the events to singers, chefs and others as a way to interact with their die-hard fans who will follow and support them anywhere. And for those fans, it’s a tough chance to pass up.

“You’re not just spending an afternoon, you’re spending your vacation with them from breakfast to lunch to dinner to cocktails and activities,” Cuellar said.

Even though the Hallmark Christmas cruise — which is being put on by Sixthman — hasn’t named the stars who will sail, Cuellar said the event was the fastest sellout in the company history.

“Within like 48 hours of the first sellout, there were people already putting mugs on Etsy that said, ‘I survived the Hallmark presale,’” he said. “You talk about a passionate audience.”

Other cruises are entirely fan-driven, without the presence of any stars.

Jessica Malerman and two friends and fellow travel agents came up with the “In My Cruise Era” trip in October during another group cruise with their agency, Marvelous Mouse Travels . There’s no affiliation with the Taylor Swift empire, but the trip has already sold the maximum 199 staterooms it reserved on megaship Allure of the Seas in October 2024.

Events will include dance parties, trivia, cocktail parties, friendship bracelet swapping and karaoke.

“What people want is the connection and they want to make friends and they want to go on vacation and have a sense of community,” Malerman said.

Chad Kampe, the owner of Flip Phone Productions, put on the first — and second — Golden Fans at Sea cruises in early 2020 after organizing a “Golden Girls”-themed bar crawl several years before. The company produces drag shows across the country.

The sailings have included themed dances, costume contests, caftan welcome parties, scavenger hunts, performances from the Golden Gays drag troupe, appearances from people with ties to the show and some very competitive trivia sessions.

“The ‘Golden Girls’ trivia is the most intense trivia you’ve ever seen,” Kampe said.

The events take place on regular voyages, meaning passengers might end up surprised by the surplus of Blanches, Dorothys, Roses and Sophias. In year one, Kampe said a biker group was also on board.

“They loved us,” he said.

Many theme cruises are organized around hobbies or other special interests.

Melissa Gower, founder of Craft Cruises , organizes an average of 10 knitting cruises a year. The knitters and their needles don’t take over the whole ship, but the sailings include instructors, social gatherings and “private fiber-related tours,” she said.

“I have people who traveled with me in 1999,” Gower said. “They’ve been on 30-plus knitting cruises, and they’re still booking travel with us.”

How to find (or avoid) a niche cruise

The Theme Cruise Finder website allows people to search according to category for upcoming trips. Often, sales will open up during an event for the people on board, so it can be difficult to get a reservation on a popular repeating cruise.

Gray Faust said travelers will often comment on Cruise Critic forums about their surprise at being on the same ship as some kind of group. She said a friend ended up on a cruise with Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans “and she hates Tampa Bay.”

In 2016, more than 1,500 vacationers who thought they were taking a regular Bahamas cruise ended up sharing space with then-Patriots player Rob Gronkowski and fans on Gronk’s Party Ship.

Gary Bembridge, a cruise YouTuber who runs the site Tips for Travellers , recommends people search online for the name and date of a cruise they’re considering to see if a theme cruise shows up at the same time.

Moses, one of the founders of the theme cruise site, is co-president of a separate business, The Cruise & Vacation Authority , which organizes theme cruises as one of its services.

“In general, theme cruises are way more fun than a regular cruise because you’re traveling with like-minded people,” he said.

And if someone isn’t like-minded on a shared ship, he said the theme group tries to be understanding.

“We try to be very respectful of the other guests on board,” he said.

Living at sea: Travelers on a 9-month world cruise are going viral on social media. For some travelers, not even nine months was enough time on a ship; they sold cars, moved out of their homes and prepared to set sail for three years . That plan fell apart, but a 3.5-year version is waiting in the wings.

Passengers beware: It’s not all buffets and dance contests. Crime data reported by cruise lines show that the number of sex crimes has increased compared to previous years. And though man-overboard cases are rare, they are usually deadly .

The more you know: If you’re cruise-curious, here are six tips from a newcomer. Remember that in most cases, extra fees and add-ons will increase the seemingly cheap price of a sailing. And if you happen to get sick , know what to expect on board.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's 2 largest cruise ships. They were shockingly similar for the $1,000 difference

  • Royal Caribbean operates many of the cruise industry's biggest ships.
  • Icon of the Seas  launched in January, dethroning its predecessor, Wonder of the Seas, as the world's largest.
  • Here's how the two mega-ships compare in size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Insider Today

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship darling, was deemed a success before it was even built.

In January, the highly anticipated vessel — complete with more than 40 bars and restaurants, a six-slide waterpark, and a waterfall — set sail, dethroning its less than two-year-old precursor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's largest cruise ship.

Before its debut, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, had already repeatedly called Icon its "best-selling product" yet. The company experienced its largest booking day ever when reservations opened for Icon of the Seas more than a year before its launch, it said

Despite all of this fanfare, you might be surprised by how similar it is to its predecessor.

I've sailed on both ships. Let's see how Icon and Wonder compare in six categories: size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Both ships stunt the size of their competitors.

brunch cruise in miami

Wonder of the Seas debuted in 2022 as the then-world's largest cruise liner, measuring 235,600 gross-tons, 1,188 feet-long, and 18 decks-tall. The ship can accommodate up to 9,288 people, including 2,204 crew.

Icon of the Seas is, comparatively, 13,063 gross-tons heavier, eight feet longer, and two decks taller. It can sail up to 9,950 people, including 2,350 crew, although it's 52 feet less wide than its predecessor.

Both vessels feel more like amusement parks than traditional cruise ships.

brunch cruise in miami

Royal Caribbean invited me on complimentary, non-revenue sailings on both ships: two nights on Wonder in late 2022 and three nights on Icon in January.

I spent most of my time lost, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

It's no surprise both ships are operating weeklong itineraries this year. Any less, and you might not have time to experience all the activities and restaurants on your list.

Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Wonder and Icon have eight 'neighborhoods' that serve separate purposes.

brunch cruise in miami

The new ship shares three of Wonder of the Seas' neighborhoods : Central Park, Royal Promenade, and Suite.

Icon's other five — Thrill Island , Surfside, Hideaway, Chill Island, and AquaDome — are a first for the cruise line.

Many of the ships' amenities overlap, but in differing quantities.

brunch cruise in miami

Wonder has three waterslides. Icon has a six-slide waterpark complete with rafting and racing options.

Both have increasingly popular cruise amenities like decks-long dry slides, mini-golf courses, rock climbing walls, and playgrounds.

But instead of Wonder of the Seas' zipline , Icon of the Seas has Crown's Edge, a thrilling agility course with a small zipline that leaves travelers dangling 154 feet above the ocean.

Wonder’s Boardwalk neighborhood was my go-to.

brunch cruise in miami

Boardwalk delivered exactly as it had promised: an open-air space grounded by wood-planked floors, a hot dog stand, a sweets store, and kitschy, colorful decor.

Icon of the Seas' Surfside , designed for families with young children, felt like its closest dupe.

Both neighborhoods had a carousel, an outdoor playground, and family-friendly dining. But Surfside was more toddler-friendly, as suggested by the children's water play area and nighttime story readings.

On to entertainment: Both mega-ships have ice skating performances and exciting multi-disciplinary shows at the AquaTheater.

brunch cruise in miami

But travelers who enjoy musicals at sea will want to stick to Icon.

Unlike its predecessor, the new ship shows a rendition of Broadway hit "The Wizard of Oz" — Munchkins, a puppet Toto, and a 16-piece live band included.

The layout of Icon's amenities were better than its cousin.

brunch cruise in miami

Some of Wonder of the Seas' enticing outdoor amenities — like the surf simulator, zipline, and mini-golf course — are clustered on the deck above and away from the pools and water slides.

This layout might be difficult for parents with children who bounce from one activity to the next. Wouldn't it be easier to have all of these outdoor extras near each other, or at least on the same deck, for parental supervision purposes?

This is where Icon of the Seas excelled: All its exciting open-air activities were adjacent.

brunch cruise in miami

The rows of pools flowed perfectly into Thrill Island's waterpark , rock climbing walls, mini-golf course, and Crown's Edge.

The best part? The adult-only Hideaway — which flexes an infinity pool club with a DJ — is right behind Thrill Island, creating a clear separation between parents and their children without being too far from each other.

'Free' options like the buffet and build-your-own tacos and burritos bar are available on both ships.

brunch cruise in miami

But you won't find the larger vessel's five-stall food hall or mini-golf-adjacent finger food stand on Wonder.

As expected, Icon of the Seas has more dining options than its predecessor, although there are some overlaps.

brunch cruise in miami

Wonder of the Seas has 11 bars and 21 dining venues (9 complimentary and 12 upcharged).

Icon of the Seas has eight more bars, four more complimentary restaurants, and three more specialty dining choices.

Nor will you find the new ship’s plush $200-a-person Empire Supper Club on any other cruise liner.

brunch cruise in miami

The multi-course dinner, paired with cocktails and live music, stunts the cost of either vessel's other dinner options.

But if you love Johnny Rockets, you’ll be disappointed by Icon of the Seas.

brunch cruise in miami

Restaurants like the popular burger chain and Southern comfort-inspired Mason Jar are only on Wonder of the Seas. Fine by me: My fried chicken at Mason Jar was as dry as a desert.

The younger ship doesn't have Wonder's robot bartender-armed bar either. It does, however, have new watering holes with dueling pianos and live jazz.

Surprisingly, Wonder of the Seas has 65 more cabins than its new cousin.

brunch cruise in miami

But several of Icon's 28 stateroom categories are a first for the cruise line.

This includes the new family infinite balcony cabin, which has a small bunk bed nook for children.

Royal Caribbean assigned me an ocean-view balcony stateroom on both ships.

brunch cruise in miami

My Wonder of the Seas' cabin was 20 square-feet smaller than the one on Icon. But my bathroom on the latter was so tiny, I accidentally elbowed the walls at almost every turn.

Sailing on the world's largest cruise ship doesn't mean you'll have the world's largest cabin after all.

Wonder and Icon are both operating seven-night roundtrip itineraries from Florida to the Caribbean.

brunch cruise in miami

In 2024, Wonder of the Seas is scheduled for year-round sailings from Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , starting at $700 per person.

Icon of the Seas is spending its first year in service operating nearly identical itineraries but from Miami instead. The cheapest 2024 option is $1,786 per person.

That's a difference of more than $125 per person per day.

"Bookings and pricing for Icon of the Seas can only be described as 'iconic,'" Naftali Holtz, the CFO of Royal Caribbean Group, told analysts in February.

Icon of the Seas’ name speaks for itself.

brunch cruise in miami

If your family is looking for a jam-packed kid-friendly cruise with enough amenities to stay entertained for a week, both ships are a great option.

But if you're a seasoned mega-ship-cruiser looking to experience something new, Icon of the Seas is your best bet.

They may be similar, but no other behemoth cruise liner has a waterpark for children and a pool club for adults just dozens of feet from each other.

PEOPLE's 24 Hour Food Tour: Miami

Whether you're looking for a classic, local staple or a buzzy celeb hot spot, here are all the restaurants where you should eat in Miami

Shay Spence is a freelance food and travel writer based in Key West, Florida. A self-proclaimed “professional eater,” he has become a viral sensation with over 1.6 million subscribers on TikTok  @theshayspence . Spence was formerly a food editor at People and competed on season 2 of Fox's  Next Level Chef.

Though it’s one of America’s most lively cities, Miami is not always known for its culinary scene — at least if we’re talking about the actual food . Many people go out for a night in South Beach in flashy club attire, hoping to see and be seen at the trendiest new spot…but that doesn’t always equate to a quality meal. Fortunately, there is so much to explore in this city if you go in with a plan and know the right spots, from tiny dives showing off the local Cuban cuisine to those aforementioned celebrity-frequented restaurants that actually serve incredible dishes. Follow this guide to have the perfect day of eating in Miami!

Breakfast: Enriqueta’s

David Beckham once declared Enriqueta's his “favorite place in Miami” on his Instagram story during a visit in 2022, but it’s not anything like the celebrity hot spots you’ll find over in South Beach. This small diner-style Cuban spot has been around since 1964, and they’re perhaps best known for the pan con bistec (a thinly-sliced steak sandwich loaded with fried potato sticks) — but locals know the best time to come is in the morning for the breakfast sandwich with the soft scrambled eggs and cheese practically melting into the buttery Cuban bread. And of course, no Cuban breakfast is complete without a cafecito.

Lunch: Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant

Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant

Cross the bridge over to South Beach and it’s much harder to find a decently-priced meal that’s quick and delicious, but this standing-room-only little taco shop defies the odds. Come to Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant for the best birria around, including the “birria pizza” (which is really just a massive, super cheesy quesadilla). Though my favorite thing on the menu are the shrimp birria tacos, with the beautifully tender seafood providing a lighter, fresher component to this typically heavy dish.

Dinner: Zaytinya

Shay Spence

Celebrity chef José Andrés recently opened the third location of his award-winning Mediterranean restauarant inside the Ritz-Carlton hotel, and the menu is a glorious fusion of Turkish, Greek and Lebanese cuisine. Zaytinya is one of those can’t-go-wrong places, but must-order dishes include the impossibly smooth hummus with harissa chili crisp, whole grilled Mediterranean sea bass and the crispy Brussels sprouts (probably the most famous food on the menu.) Also, you have to order some mujadara — a humble lentil and rice stew that my Lebanese mother made for us every week. Andrés fancies it up with crispy fried shallots and a dollop of soubise yogurt.

Drinks and Dessert: Rao’s

The original New York City location of Rao's (yes, it’s where the jarred pasta sauce comes from) is probably the hardest restaurant reservation to snag in the country — you have to have a standing table that goes back generations, or be invited by someone who does. This latest outpost in the Loews Miami Beach hotel, which opened earlier this year, is decidedly much easier to get into, though in my experience your best bet is to go later at night and sit at the bar. The best thing I’ve had on the menu here — and truly one of the best desserts I’ve had in my life — is the peanut butter tart, which has a graham cracker crust and an almost cartoonishly perfect pour of chocolate ganache on top.

Late-Night Spot: La Sandwicherie

While the Cuban sandwich reigns supreme in Miami, this al fresco French sandwich counter in the heart of South Beach serves the best late-night food in the city. Get the Frenchie, which is made with salami and brie, and be sure to have them load up the cornichons and douse in their homemade creamy French dressing. La Sandwicherie is also conveniently located right across the street from one of South Beach’s only true dive bars, Mac’s Club Deuce, which Anthony Bourdain once called one of his “favorite places on Earth.”

Celebrity Hot Spot: Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay

One of the newest on the South Beach scene, this upscale Asian restaurant has already been  frequented  by celebrities like Gloria Estefan and Lisa Hochstein . If you opt to dine at the 8-seat private chef’s table ($225 per person), you’ll get a regularly changing line-up of ten courses that are expertly crafted right in front of your eyes — and maybe even a surprise appearance by Chef Ramsay himself, who has shown up multiple times since Lucky Cat first opened in February.

Embassy Suites Miami Aiport - Perfect for Cruises

A few months ago my family and I flew to Miami the day before our cruise set sail. We also travel a day early in case there are issues with flights because there are way more choices for flights if you need to rebook but a cruise is not going to wait for you.

I didn’t need anything fancy because we were literally getting there at dinner time and leaving the next morning for our cruise. I didn’t want something gross either and you never know what you are going to get with downtown areas.

Embassy Suites is a Hilton hotel and it is our go-to hotel when we find one available. I wasn’t sure it would be worth saving the money staying a little further than I’d like but it was definitely worth it.

The Embassy Suites Miami Airport hotel has so many great perks:

  • Free airport shuttle that picked us up right outside baggage claim. We had no issues with this and it saved us on the Uber to the hotel.
  • Happy Hour with free snacks and drink tickets, free soda as well. We had chips and salsa, fruit, veggies with dip and pretzels. There might have been more but we go there towards the end. Again this is all free!
  • Lots of cruisers were there so it must be a popular hotel to use the night before your cruise.
  • Free hot big breakfast buffet with made to order omlets. This is one of my favorite perks of Embassy Suites because breakfast for five people adds up!
  • Nothing really in the area foodwise to get without a car but we were able to order pizza easily and it was reasonably priced. There is an onsite restaurant but it is a little pricey for a big family.
  • There is a pool but we were there in December and didn’t have time to swim anyways.
  • Big clean room with a suite area so all five of us slept comfortably.
  • About 20 minutes from the cruise ports and we had no issues catching an Uber.

I highly recommend Embassy Suites Miami Airport. It gave our trip a positive start!

Subscriber only, college sports | why star quarterback cam ward chose the hurricanes over testing the nfl draft waters.

Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward throws a pass during Miami's first spring practice on March 4. Ward transferred to Miami from Washington State after originally declaring for the NFL draft. (Joe Cavaretta/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

CORAL GABLES — Deep down, Cam Ward always wanted to be a Hurricane.

At least, that is what Mario Cristobal thinks.

“There was a feeling all along that no matter how it initially played out that he wanted to be a Miami Hurricane,” Cristobal said. “If he admits that later or not, I’ll say he’s full of it. When that call came in, I don’t know if I wanted to high five or jump through the screen and put him in a headlock. The wait was worth it.”

If Ward did always want to come to Miami, he did a good job concealing it from the public. The former Washington State quarterback announced his plans to enter the NFL draft on New Year’s Day. Less than two weeks later, Ward changed his mind, withdrawing from the draft and announcing he would transfer to Miami.

“That was probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” Ward said. “From thinking I was ready for the NFL draft to knowing that I’m still not done yet in college. There’s still food left on the table for myself, for this team.”

Months later, Ward is wrapping up spring practice with his new teammates, preparing for the Hurricanes’ spring game on Saturday. He has drawn rave reviews from the coaching staff and from other Hurricanes. The ability he showed at Washington State has given Miami fans hope that the Hurricanes will reach heights not seen at UM in decades.

“Guys like that … that can make change, that can make a big difference, not just as a player but as a human being, they come around not too often,” Cristobal said.

Ward cited the Hurricanes’ returning talent, particularly at offensive line, as a major reason why he chose Miami.

“The guys that we return from last season — the majority of the O-line, you get the whole receiving corps back, key pieces of the defense — so I think now it’s just plug and play,” Ward said. “You’ve got a playmaker like myself in the backfield along with good running backs like (Mark Fletcher Jr., Chris Johnson Jr. and Ajay Allen), so at the end of the day, I feel like this is the right program not only for myself but guys who are here right now or are going to end up coming here.”

Ward said he was familiar with offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson’s offense, which he described as an “Air Raid just in a huddle.” He learned it quickly after arriving at UM.

“It’s a lot of concepts that I’ve been running since I started college,” Ward said. “The thing about coach Dawson is that he allows me to be myself. In the pocket, when I’m outside the pocket in scramble drills, he lets me really coach up the receivers on what I see when I see the field. Big hats off to him. When I came in, he came and took me under his wing, showed me the offense within a week and we’ve just been growing and learning ever since.”

Although Ward has not been with the Hurricanes long, he has been quick to bond with his new teammates. He invited skill players over to his home to watch the Super Bowl in the winter, and he took the offensive linemen out to a steak dinner (though rising second-year offensive lineman Tommy Kinsler said he only ordered cole slaw and salad). He has learned what he likes about South Florida (fishing) and what he does not like (traffic).

Beyond fun activities with teammates, Cristobal said Ward has earned his teammates’ trust because it is easy to see how much work he is doing.

“He earned trust in the fact that he’s up there at the office every waking, free moment that he has,” Cristobal said. “He gets there early and he leaves late, and he pulls aside the receivers and the tight ends and he watches film with them. He takes the linemen out to eat, he spends time with the running backs. Then he’ll wait after practice and do some more stuff with other guys that maybe were off a little bit and then come in on Saturdays and get extra work.

“Trust and confidence is earned; it’s not just given away,” Cristobal said. “What he has done (is) he has earned, alright, earned the trust of the people around him because of his time he’s invested and the fact that he’s an alpha. Your quarterback needs to be an alpha.”
