Princess Cruises completes renovation of Crown Princess

crown princess cruise ship news

Princess Cruises has completed its multi-million pound refurbishment of the Crown Princess.

The vessel, which has capacity for 3,080 guests, now includes new dining venues, a luxury bed in every room and an upgraded spa and fitness centre.

In addition, ‘Club class’ mini-suites, a new premium stateroom category, have been introduced. Club class includes a reserved dining area with expanded menu options in one of the main onboard restaurants, upgraded room amenities and priority embarkation and disembarkation.

Guests can also enjoy, Effy, a new fine jewellery shop, while Princess Cruises has unveiled a range of children’s centre activities in association with the Discovery Channel.

The refit was completed in Freeport, Bahamas at the Grand Bahama shipyard. The enhancements continue Princess Cruises’ ‘Come Back New Promise’ campaign, with £330m being invested across the line’s fleet of 17 ships.

Crown Princess is currently sailing the Mediterranean, which will be followed later this year by a season in the Caribbean. She will be based in Southampton in spring and summer 2019 for a series of round Britain cruises.

Princess Cruises reveals new itineraries for Crown Princess

crown princess cruise ship news

Princess Cruises mammoth vessel,  Crown Princess,  is set to claim the title of the largest cruise ship ever to be based year round in Australia when she debuts in 2024.

The 113,561-tonne, 3080-guest cruise ship will make history when it debuts in its new homeport of Sydney in October next year, offering itineraries that include the brand’s longest world cruise to sail roundtrip from Australia – an epic 113-night global odyssey.

Crown  Princess  is the headline act in  Princess Cruises’ new 2024-25 program which features round-Australia voyage options from five different cities as well as the maiden Brisbane season of the 2670-guest Diamond  Princess , the largest  Princess  ship ever to be based in the Queensland capital.

The program also includes  Princess ’ first ever roundtrip cruise from Hobart – an 18-night voyage to New Zealand on the elegant Royal  Princess . Guests may also choose to extend their stay in our southernmost state, with two options to take a four- or five-night cruise to and from Hobart.

Between them, Crown  Princess , Diamond  Princess   and Royal  Princess will offer 117 departures from 2 to 113 days between October 2024 to September 2025, and will sail from seven different ports for the first time: Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Fremantle (for Perth), Hobart and Auckland.

Princess  Cruises President, John Padgett said the decision to base a large ship such as Crown  Princess down under year round was testament to Australians’ love for long cruises.

“Over the past season we’ve seen more and more Australian and New Zealand guests making up for lost time travelling, choosing our longer, life-changing journeys to maximise their holiday in style,” Padgett, said.

“Thanks to Crown  Princess ’ generous size, we’ll be able to carry over 50 per cent more guests on popular itineraries like our world cruise and Australian circumnavigation voyages, adding more affordable stateroom types and more premium suites than ever before to cater for a broad range of travellers.”

With roundtrip departures from Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland in May and June 2025, Crown  Princess ’ world voyage will visit 49 exotic ports across 28 countries, including Spain’s Barcelona and Mallorca, Norway’s Lofoten Islands and Tromso, Iceland’s Isafjordur and Reykjavik, Greenland’s Qaqortoq, Morocco’s Casablanca, Easter Island in the Pacific, and Pisco in Peru.

“The ship’s size also means more accommodation choice with an expanded range of entry level staterooms as well as 30 per cent more balcony cabins to enjoy Australia’s stunning coastline by sea,” Padgett, said.

On sale from 4 April for elite guests and 5 April, 2023 for general public, the new program features voyages visiting 66 different destinations, including late stays in 13 ports such as Victoria’s Phillip Island, where local fairy penguins provide an enchanting evening show for guests. Other itinerary highlights include:

  • Princess  will offer 17 voyages to New Zealand on 3 ships all departing from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne including a 14-night round trip cruise on Royal  Princess  departing from Sydney on December 7 visiting Bay of Islands, Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch (Lyttleton), Dunedin (Port Chalmers), Fiordland National Park (scenic cruising).
  • Princess  first-ever roundtrip cruise from Hobart – an 18-night voyage to New Zealand departing November 14, 2024.
  • Three roundtrip voyages from Adelaide including a 19-night cruise to New Zealand departing October 3, 2024.

Princess Plus and  Princess  Premier have also become even better, now including the line’s MedallionNet WiFi, premium beverages, desserts and meals at specialty dining restaurants, as well as fitness classes and use of the onboard juice bar. These all-inclusive offerings give guests greater value, and at AU$65 per day per guest for  Princess  Plus and AU$95 per day per guest for  Princess  Premium,  Princess  is offering more onboard experiences for less.

Crown Princess passengers frustrated over delay on San Francisco-Mexico cruise

By ginger conejero saab • published december 13, 2023 • updated on december 13, 2023 at 7:51 am.

Frustrated Crown Princess cruise ship passengers were left upset about having to wait hours to set sail on a voyage from San Francisco to Mexico.

Crown Princess departed San Francisco early Wednesday morning, but before that happened, passengers took to social media to voice their disappointment and frustration with how the cruise line handled the scheduled delay of the cruise.

One person posted a video showing her 82-year-old father and family, plus thousands of other people, waiting in a drafty warehouse. The person continued on to say there was no food available and water was limited.

Food delivery was not an option, and people did not want to leave or else they would lose their place in line.

Another person said the company should do better for disabled guests, who waited for hours in the night.

The original delay was no surprise to passengers. According to Princess Cruises, it received notification from San Francisco port officials of an increased accumulation of silt in the vicinity of the designated cruise berth that would affect embarkation scheduled for Tuesday. That buildup, in conjunction with unusually low tidal levels in San Francisco Bay, meant the ship would not have the required keel clearance to dock and embark at the originally scheduled time.

Guests were notified via email and given a letter explaining the situation when they arrived at the terminal.

Passengers planned for the original delay, but they were not expecting that to be pushed back even more. Crown Princess departed San Francisco at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, almost five hours more than the original delay.

Passengers were given a $25 credit, but there were plenty of people who felt that did not cut it for their troubles.

Princess Cruises released the following statement:

"Over the weekend Princess Cruises received notification from San Francisco Port officials regarding an increased accumulation of silt in the vicinity of the designated cruise berth affecting the embarkation schedule for Crown Princess on Tuesday, December 12. This buildup, in conjunction with unusually low tidal levels in San Francisco Bay, resulted in the ship not having the required under keel clearance to dock and embark at its originally scheduled time Tuesday morning.

Guests who were scheduled to embark were informed via electronic notification on Sunday of the new embarkation time of 6:30 pm and requested they delay their arrival at the terminal accordingly. Additionally, those who arrived at the terminal at the initially scheduled check-in time were provided with a letter explaining the situation.

Several hundred guests who could be accommodated in the terminal were provided with snacks and refreshments while they waited. In addition, Princess Cruises worked with the nearby Hyatt hotel to arrange an alternative space in the hotel's convention area for more than 1500 guests. This arrangement included transportation to and from the hotel, as well as snacks and refreshments. Many other guests opted to explore San Francisco. All guests have received a $25 onboard credit.

Although this delay was beyond our control, we do regret the inconvenience it caused. Crown Princess departed San Francisco at 1:15 am PT Wednesday morning."

Crown Princess to Sail Year-Round from Australia

  • September 26, 2023

Crown Princess

The Crown Princess is set to be based in Australia on a year-round basis starting in October 2024. According to Princess Cruises’ published deployment, the 3,100-guest ship will offer a series of itineraries departing from Sydney.

Replacing the Coral Princess, which is currently sailing a year-round schedule in Australia, the Crown Princess will also offer departures from Fremantle, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.

The ship’s program includes Princess Cruises’ annual Australia World Cruise. Set to depart in June 2025, the 113-night global journey features visits to several destinations in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America, the Caribbean and South America.

In March 2025, the Crown Princess is also poised to offer a 28-night round Australia cruise. Sailing roundtrip from Sydney, the month-long journey features 13 ports of call, such as Albany, Geraldton, Margaret River, Willis Island and Cairns.

The vessel is also offering shorter itineraries to Queensland, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Southern Australia and more.

Built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the Crown Princess originally entered service in 2006. First in a series of ships known as the Crown Class, the 113,000-ton vessel introduced several new features, such as The Sanctuary.

Described by Princess as an adults-only “oasis of tranquility,” the outdoor area features plush seating, massage cabanas, signature beverages and light meals and was later rolled out to the entire fleet.

The vessel also offers most of the company’s signature features, including a piazza-style atrium, the 300-square-foot Movies Under the Stars poolside theater, and a variety of dining venues and lounges.

In addition to the Crown Princess, Princess Cruises’ 2024-25 season in Australia also includes the Diamond Princess and the Royal Princess.

Debuting in the region, the Diamond Princess is set to offer a series of cruises from Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, while the Royal Princess sails from Sydney, Hobart and also New Zealand’s Auckland.

Crown food disappointment

Mar 28th, 2024

Repetitive food in the buffet. Repetitive entertainment. Food was lacking taste in buffet. Lack of excursion options for people with mobility difficulties. Staff was great! Have another raise booked for 2026 but I will probably cancel and use different cruise line. This was our 2nd time on Crown and things just weren't as good as the first time.

Extraordinary Hawaiian Islands cruise! Weather cooperated, although chilly leaving San Francisco.

The entire experience was wonderful! It exceeded our expectations! The Hawaiian related activities & entertainment were a real plus.

Disappointing first time on Princess

Feb 25th, 2024

We've cruised many times but never on Princess. We arrived at 11:30am, an hour after they opened for embarkation. The line was already wrapped around the lawn area, and then more lines once you got inside. It was cold and raining and we didn’t get on the ship until 1pm, an hour and a half after we arrived. So different from Royal where we were dropped off at the front, greeted by porters who whisked away our bags, and walked onto the ship 15 mins later. The good thing about having to wait so long was that our rooms were ready by the time we got there, so we went straight there to drop off our bags. Food: Buffets usually get a bad rap but we usually find something we enjoy at each one. Not on the Crown. Even the salad was bad. They need to invest in some salad spinners because their salads were dripping with water, the dressings had no flavor, the ingredients (like the chicken, tomatoes, and hard boiled eggs) were shredded/chopped to where they were unrecognizable. Maybe this appeals to the older crowd who need their food chewed for them, but I prefer my salads to have some bite. Dinner was not any better. You fill out a dining preference sheet ahead of time where they ask if you prefer a table by the window, and if you prefer a fast, medium or slow speed of dining. I don’t know why they ask because it was never accommodated. The servers were great but the only dining room that seemed to have assistants was Michalangelo. As a result, everything took a really long time, which would be fine if the food was worth waiting for, but it wasn’t. I really think most of the dining room food is from the same batch as the buffet. I waited an hour for chicken and waffles which tasted like the buffet waffles with chicken tenders on top. And it wasn’t even hot or fresh. One night I got fajitas which looked like someone scooped it from the buffet and put two pieces of stale tortillas on it, with the same guacamole and tomato mush that they serve in the buffet line. I would think at least in the dining room that they would use real avocados to make their guacamole, but it was the same stuff that looked like it was squeezed out of a tube. We were really excited to see the Salty Dog Grill. How can you go wrong with hot dogs, burgers and chili cheese fries made to order? Well apparently you can overcook all the burgers, serve the hot dogs on stale dry buns, and put one squirt of processed cheese and one teaspoon of chili on a basket of fries. The pizza from Slice was pretty good though, and the ice cream sundaes looked good as well. High Tea sounded like a great idea. But the reality was a really long line of people, being told you have to be seated with strangers unless you wanted to wait even longer, and then being served lukewarm tea. Servers walked around with trays of food, which disappeared before they could get to your table. One tray was the sandwiches, which was just tuna or egg salad served on some hard round rolls. It would have been simple enough to make them with sliced bread or have some cucumber cream cheese in them,...they have all the ingredients. But it seems that Princess is all about streamlining rather than quality. We saw another tray with desserts and cookies which looked unappetizing, like someone pulled them from the buffet line. Then as our table mates got tired of waiting for more of the same, they finally came out with a tray of dry scones. This entire time our tea was not refilled. It was very disappointing. I wish they would just not do it at all if they can’t attempt to do it correctly. Thermal spa: Since there wasn’t much to do on the ship, I thought I’d get the Thermal Spa package which was $150 for 5 nights. It was supposed to include access to their steam room, sauna, waterfall fog showers, and ceramic heated chairs, as well as an exclusive pool and hot tub area. This was the biggest rip off. There was no hot water in the showers the entire time I was there. The sauna was barely hot and they finally shut it down on the last day to fix it. Of course that would also be the same day that the ceramic chairs weren’t working, and the steam room was dangerously over heated,...I couldn’t stay in there longer than 3 minutes, it was that hot. The “private” pool was also never filled our entire trip. Halfway through I asked to speak to the spa manager. The lady took my room number but he never got in touch with me. On the last day I again asked to speak to him and the lady at the desk was very defensive, telling me that the showers are supposed to be cold (how do you get a fog shower without heat, and if they’re supposed to be cold, why didn’t any of their staff say so when other passengers reported it? There was even a maintenance guy there fixing the lights and he said he would look into it) The most the lady would do was to refund me a day, which I had no choice but to take. She was not very nice about it and told me she would call me in 20 minutes. Again I didn’t get a call all day and had to go back to see if it was refunded to me. By the way, I ended up using the free sauna in the changing area on the last day, which was so much better than the Thermal Suite one. I had to take my necklace off for the first time because it was burning from the heat,...it hadn’t done that at all previously because it wasn’t working all trip. And there’s a free steam room and showers (with hot water!) in the changing room too. So really the only thing you’re paying for are the ceramic beds in the Thermal Suite. Entertainment: Everything was just meh. The production show was uninspired. It looked very rehearsed and routine with no energy and no heart. I overheard another passenger say that having white people trying to sing soul music didn’t work. Possible, but I just don’t think any of the singers were amazing. Again, as was the theme for the cruise, they were just average. There were two comedians. The first one, Scott Belford, was so bad that it was painful to watch. I don’t know how Princess could hire him as an entertainer. Do they watch his shows?? It was like amateur night, with jokes like “I love it when my wife walks right by the coat closet,...only to put her jacket on the back of a chair 20 feet away.” cue laughter from comedian and no one else “At least she doesn’t do it 24/7 like I do. She has me beat there” cue uncomfortable laughter from one person in the audience. We had to walk out, it was so incredibly cringey. The second guy was an impressionist and he was really funny. Or maybe he just looked like a rockstar next to the first guy. We saw two of his shows and he was the highlight of the entire entertainment schedule. Our room was on the Piazza level mid ship, which was super convenient for access to dinner, gangway, shops, bar, etc. The main area of the ship is there as well, in front of the elevators. This is where they do the games, live music, and the welcome/farewell ceremonies. Makes it really difficult to talk to customer service though, as their counter is one floor above the open atrium where everything is happening. The merchandise sales were crazy. They had three four-foot tables that they put along the railing. People were pushing and shoving trying to get to the cheap $10 items that they were selling. You won’t be able to get to the front unless you have ninja powers, so I would suggest going near the end. Don’t worry, the cheap tacky watches and shawls and hats will still be there. Other things to know: Soda package comes with mocktails, but not bottled water for some reason. You also can’t chat with your shipmates unless you have the old version of the app, which is so incredibly dumb. Why would you release a version of the app with less functionality? The ship itself offers very little to do. Most advertised activities are just sales pitches. The free mini facial session consists of sitting on hard chairs in a meeting room with someone giving you a bit of cleanser/toner/ etc to rub on, then a cold wipe to clean it off, and then moisturizer. Meanwhile they’re trying to “educate” you on why their products are superior. It’s really not a facial at all. Neither are the free “massage samplers”. We went to the art auction (we were that bored) and the lady hosting it was telling the audience how lucky we were that we weren’t going on the Hawaii trip right after our sailing. She was dreading the upcoming 8 sea days. After going on the Crown with 2 sea days, I can understand her dread. Normally I’m a bit envious of the cruisers getting on while we are getting off, but this time I was glad to be home. I think it’s safe to say that this will be our last trip on Princess.

Fantastic Mexican Riveria Cruise

Feb 20th, 2024

We had a great time. Night time entertainment was really good. Delicous food too.

Fantastic Mexican Riviera

This cruise on the Crown Princess had a great itinerary. The weather was great once we hit Mexico. They need to upgrade their door ramps for walkers and wheelchair access. Bed rails for adults are needed in their wheelchair accessible rooms for those who may need them. The pools were disappointing as the heaters were not working, they were freezing cold! The entertainment was wonderful.

Relaxing cruise, but disappointed in cruise team

Jan 27th, 2024

Don’t bother with Princess if you have food allergies. They aren’t allergen friendly. Ship is olde and needs an update. Pools aren’t heated, so not useable.

Just received this information from Princess about the December 12 10-day Mexican Riviera cruise out of SF.

IMPORTANT NOTICES

DELAYED EMBARKATION

Please be advised that due to an increased amount of silt buildup at our assigned cruise berth and severe low spring tidal levels in San Francisco Bay, Crown Princess will not have the necessary under-keel clearance necessary to berth on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, in the early afternoon. As a result, your embarkation has been delayed. Check-in will begin at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, December 12, and embarkation will begin at 8:30 PM. Please do not arrive early as seating in the terminal is limited. Guests who arrive early may leave their luggage and enjoy the surrounding area. All guests must be aboard by 10:30 PM.

Please keep any essential items such as passports and other travel documents, medication, baby formula, and pajamas in your carry-on baggage as checked luggage will be delivered to staterooms late at night.

In recognition of the delayed start to your cruise and to offset any expenses you may incur due to the delay, all guests will receive a $25 onboard credit.

Thank you for your attention to this notification.

We were able to move our checkout time from the hotel to 1:00pm, not much but better.  Weather looks to be in the high 50's, partly cloudy.  At least it doesn't show rain 🙂

We changed our train tickets.  Was scheduled to be in the City by 11am.  Now we’re arriving around 9 pm.

I think it’s going to be a zoo…..

Always nervous when traveling by train!  We’re in the East Bay so our train ride is only one hour.  If necessary, we’ll Uber in or drive depending on the train status when we’re ready to board the train.

Wow, not only does this change plans for everyone boarding but, think about all the disembarking passengers missing flight home.

At lease everyone has a 2 day notice to make changes.

The people disembarking in the morning of December 12th will still do so. They will be off before the very low tide apparently.  When the tide comes back up the embarking folks will board as described in the post above.

What a hassle for everyone.  Looks like the port of San Francisco needs to get a dredger out there ASAP!!

Good luck everyone and have a great cruise to Mexico!

Has there been any word on revision to the transfer bus schedule from SFO airport to the ship?  All information on the Princess web site points to transfer buses starting at 10:30AM.

Ok do you are on BART not Amtrak. I had thought you were coming from further away

If it was me, I'd go early, drop off my luggage, and then go tour Alcatraz island.  There is a lot to do in the Embarcadero besides that but I love Alcatraz. 😄  There is also the Walt Disney Family Museum about 15 minutes away and Fisherman's Wharf right there.

So, I  couldn't change my flight. Going to be in the city by noon. Where are we suppose to leave our luggage until embarkation. If the passengers demarcation is occurring on the morning of Tues Dec 12, 2023 then why can't the embarkation still occur  at the normal  time? Let the passengers on and don’t sail until 2230hrs. Why make us wait in the cold in SF.

NightReader

I've been wondering the same thing.  Have you found an answer? My travel agent said to go at 10 and drop off luggage at terminal and enjoy the piers but stay close...

Nope yours is the first response. Drop off luggage at terminal? Is that with the porters? It's going to be cold by the water and I hope they'll allow us to board instead of hanging out by the pier. I'm from the Bay Area and hanging out before boarding is not something I want to do.

My understanding is immediately after disembarkation, the ship will move to deeper anchorage until at least 6:30pm. They've told existing passengers who are continuing on that they can leave the ship, but if they don't return by 11:30 a.m. they will not be able to reboard until 8:30 at earliest.

Okay. SMH. I have been cruising since  1999 and have never had this happen. Yes this is my very 1st time leaving from SF port. Oh well it is what it is and I'll have to figure out how to occupy 8hrs in SF. I don't want to be in SF for that length of time. 😔 . I'm hoping to be in the terminal relaxing. Thanks for the info

I saw on the news that they set up a lounge for people who came early to hang out, if they didn't want to go touristing to fill the time.

This may sound really stupid but why couldn’t they have done regular checkin then tender people to the ship in the bay so they could have cocktails and dinner and come back to the pier for luggage

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but neither Pier 27 or 35 have docks that can accommodate tendering.

It looked like the ship was in the anchorage south of the Bay Bridge, which is probably 4 to 5 miles from Pier 27. In addition, the area between Pier 27 and the bridge has lots of ferry traffic. Can’t imagine they would want or could run tenders in that scenario.

Thanks

I can understand not wanting to roam the city to fill the time. San Francisco used to be one of our favourite cities, but we were there last year and I'm sad to say it has really gone downhill. Don't think we will be going back.

Stuff happens. Being in SF instead of on a ship is a blessing, I'd think, as in Seattle. Miami evidently closed its port entirely this weekend due to storms. My weirdest freak disembarkation delay was due to a HAL ship being surrounded by ecoprotesters in Kiel, Germany in rubber rafts and kayaks, so the ship was delayed for 8 hours or so, until the kids got bored and paddled home. Arrival was delayed by 5 hours or so, so those without HAL flights were on their own.

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. , (April 8, 2024) - Award-winning actress and performer Hannah Waddingham will serve the time-honored, maritime tradition as the official Godmother of Princess Cruises’ newest “Love Boat” Sun Princess. The star-studded naming ceremony will take place at the Port of Barcelona on April 23, 2024.

Waddingham joins an esteemed group who have served as Godparent to Princess ships: Diana, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 1984), Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 2013); Audrey Hepburn (Star Princess, 1989); Sophia Loren (Crown Princess, 1990); Martha Stewart (Crown Princess, 2006), among many notable celebrities.

British actress and singer, Waddingham is beloved for her role as Rebecca Welton in Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,” in which her performance garnered a Primetime Emmy, Critics Choice Television Award and Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as two individual Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations. She will next be seen in the highly anticipated Universal film “The Fall Guy” opposite Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in theaters on May 3, 2024. Earlier this year, Waddingham earned a BAFTA TV Award nomination for her own Apple TV+ holiday special “Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas.” Waddingham made her worldwide hosting debut in April 2023 at The Olivier Awards (she returns as host for the 2024 ceremony on April 14) followed swiftly by the BBC Eurovision Song Contest 2023, for which she has gained her second BAFTA TV nomination and won The Royal Television Society award for “Best Entertainment Performance” in 2024. Her upcoming films include Sony Animation film “Garfield” out May 24, 2024 and in 2025 “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.”

“We’re delighted to welcome the illuminous and elegant Hannah Waddingham to serve as Godmother for our sensational new Sun Princess,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “Just like Sun Princess, she exudes sophistication, beauty and wonderment through her inspiring work as a talented and award-winning actress and performer. We’re truly honored Hannah will officially name our most impressive, luxurious and stunning Love Boat ever created, and join an esteemed group of Princess Godparents including members of the Royal family.”

The new 177,882-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess introduces an innovative new ship platform designed exclusively for the world’s most iconic cruise brand.
