Destination Must-See's

Egypt ms1

Located on the banks of the Nile, Egypt’s capital city of Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africa. Here, visitors find something for everyone: beautiful views, good climate, and welcoming locals that make any activity lots of fun. You can enjoy the arts, go for walks down the Nile promenade, or visit the pyramids.

Egypt ms2

This is Egypt’s sunniest southern city. The town is small enough to walk around, and life there is slow and relaxing. Aswan is in a perfect location along the Nile where visitors can watch sailboats passing by or dine in a floating restaurant. Every night, dancers and musicians perform in the cultural center.

Egypt ms3

Giza is the third largest city in Egypt. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River southwest of Cairo. The most famous attraction in the city of Giza, located on the Giza plateau, is the pyramids. Also on the Giza plateau you can see the Great Sphinx and perhaps ride a camel.

Egypt ms4

Abu Simbel:

The archaeological area of Abu Simbel consists of two temples. The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside as a monument to Pharaoh Ramesses II and queen Nefertari. The temples were saved when the rising waters of the Nile threatened, and were raised higher for protection in 1968. In the innermost shrine seats statues of the gods Ptah, Amun-Ra, the deified Ramses II and Re-Horakhte. The temple is so precisely placed that on February 22 and October 22, the first rays of the morning sun shine through the entire temple and illuminate the four gods.

Destination Must-Do's

Egypt md1

The pyramids of Egypt are true wonders of the ancient world. They were originally built as tombs for the pharaohs and their queens. Some believe that they had sloped sides so the pharaoh could symbolically climb to the sky and live forever. Today there are over 100 pyramids of all different shapes and sizes in Egypt, as archaeologists continue to uncover and identify previously unknown pyramids.

Egypt md2

The Sphinx has been a symbol of Egypt for thousands of years. With the body of a lion and the head of what is generally believed to be Pharaoh Khafra, the Great Sphinx of Giza symbolizes strength and wisdom. For centuries, visitors have included poets, scholars and adventurers seeking knowledge about its history and the secrets it might hold.

Egypt md3

Today, the boy king is one of the best-known pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Yet, from the time of his mysterious death at 19 until the year 1922, he was relatively unknown until his tomb was finally found. The entrance was covered with debris, but the inside was completely intact along with murals and so many artifacts that it took ten years to catalog them. Many of the artifacts travel the world on exhibit and provide insight into the fascinating ancient Egyptian civilization.

Egypt md4

Camels in the desert:

Humans have used camels for transport for thousands of years. Built for traversing the desert, they can carry about 500 pounds, can go up to six months without food and water, and can easily trek their way through sandstorms. They are herbivores with tough, leathery mouths who can eat prickly desert plants that most animals cannot. When water is available, camels rehydrate faster than any other mammal and can drink up to 30 gallons at a time in just under 15 minutes.

Expert Advice

diana

No one drinks the tap water in Egypt – not even the locals – so be prepared to buy lots of bottled water.

Egypt e2

You should definitely pack comfortable walking shoes, preferably with crepe or rubber soles, as well as a hat for sun protection, and swimwear for free time when on the cruise. Please note that dress in the Egypt is conservative; however casual touring wear such as shorts and tee shirts are acceptable for tourists, though you may feel more comfortable in long pants or long skirts. Linen is recommended so as to protect you from heat and sun.

When I am traveling here I like to keep some cash on hand. I’ve found that many Egyptians rely on tips for the majority of their income.

Moving to Egypt Transformed My Travel Wardrobe — Here Are 13 Comfy Essentials I Now Swear by, From $26

From white linen pants to breezy maxi dresses, these are the versatile clothes I wear on repeat in Cairo.

If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

I recently moved to Cairo, Egypt’s capital and a desert city that experiences a range of temperatures in a single day. I learned quickly that I’d need looks that would keep me cool in the sun yet warm on chilly nights and be modest enough to fit right in. So I added a few key items to my travel wardrobe, from white linen pants to apparel with built-in UPF sun protection to a light denim jacket I can layer on top at night.

If you’re packing for your own Egypt trip, maybe you can benefit from a few key things I’ve learned along the way. First, classic, elegant silhouettes on the more modest side go far; generally speaking, covering from your shoulders to your knees is acceptable here. You don’t want to attract unwanted attention when you’re sightseeing. And second, whether you’re headed to the pyramids, climbing Mount Sinai, or taking the metro to avoid Cairo traffic, comfortable, close-toed shoes are also essential.

Since it’s the desert, sand and dust are all around, but you shouldn’t let this stop you from wearing white. Just keep a reliable stain remover in your suitcase. Depending on your style, you can stick to bold prints or minimalist neutrals that hide anything that gets on your outfit. All in all, you can’t go wrong with stylish and functional staples, so scroll on for my ultimate guide to what to wear to Egypt .

Quince White Linen Pants

It’s no secret that linen is the way to go in any warm weather climate, but sometimes the fabric can get quite expensive. I’ve turned to Quince’s deals and sales for my linen sets complete with pants, a matching tank , and a short or long-sleeve shirt . I recommend buying all the various lengths because I tend to switch between the three of them throughout the day.

Plus, a coordinated look is an excellent hack to looking put together in a flash. Given the packed itinerary you’ll likely have in Egypt, nothing beats a quick and simple ensemble. Quince has linen in all kinds of colors and pinstripe, too, so do yourself a favor and stock up.

Rothy’s The Casual Clog

Rothy's

Clogs are my go-to in Cairo as the open back keeps my feet cool while a closed toe keeps them from getting dusty. And these Rothy’s in particular are a winning travel shoe because you never have to worry about getting them dirty — they’re machine washable . Any time I get a stain on them, I simply pop the shoes into the washing machine.

It’s a low-maintenance setup, and the plush footbed with arch support makes them a joy to walk around in. The only thing to remember is that Rothy’s can’t take excessive heat from a dryer, so you always have to let them air dry. Looking for this style for less? This similar Amazon pair is only $39 (though not as conveniently machine washable).

Nordstrom Long Sleeve Shirt Dress

Similar to my linen sets, I have a rack of maxi shirt dresses ready to go for any occasion. They’re stylish yet conservative enough, appropriate for being out about about, and will keep you cool.

As someone who’s petite, I opt for vertical stripes to flatter and elongate my figure, and I find the pattern a fun way to show off my style personality. Did I mention this style has pockets? I may not put valuables in them to deter pickpockets, but it’s great for having items like lip gloss with SPF handy.

Khaki Baseball Cap

Even with slightly cooler temperatures during the earlier months of the year, the sun is still strong in the desert. In addition to a pair of sunglasses , I rock a baseball cap anywhere I go.

It’s a practical accessory that will protect you from the sun, and it makes a subtle style statement. I keep it right by the door, so I can finish any outfit with it on my way out, especially when I want to cover up a bad hair day. Again, to match the desert, I have a khaki color that pairs well with anything.

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

A small, on-the-go bag that can fit your hotel key, credit cards, cash, and phone is a must-have. Lululemon’s belt bag is an affordable solution that has gotten me through many days and nights out in Cairo along with other trips beyond the city.

I prefer to clip it over my chest for a more fashion-forward style and the bonus of easier access to my essentials. And unlike most fanny packs, there’s a separate interior pocket that will help keep all your stuff organized.

Madewell The Jean Jacket

Like New York, Cairo is another city that never sleeps, so you’ll need some form of outerwear for the colder nights in the desert. You’ll find the streets filled with people at all hours of the night.

Whether I’m going to a late dinner or a nightcap at a coffee shop, my denim jacket always comes with me. Not only does it keep me cozy, but I can also wear it with everything from a dressier slip dress to denim jeans or long skirts in similar washes.

Hill House Home The Ellie Nap Dress

Hill House Home

If you ask me, Hill House’s popular Nap Dress isn’t for snoozing. In fact, it’s what I like to wear on activity, photo-filled days. Similar to my cropped pants, it looks good on anyone and the site offers a range of colors, prints, and sizes.

It’s casual enough that it works for a laid-back lunch or food tour. Then again, I’ve thrown it on with heels before for a fancy night out. I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to have versatile pieces when traveling, and this one fits the bill as it covers the knees and shoulders.

Everlane The Day Mary Jane

I’m a fan of athleisure, but I don’t like my closet to be lined with sneakers or uncomfortable sandals. I chose these durable Mary Janes from Everlane made out of soft leather in the Blush Tan because they fit perfectly and match the sand on the roads so I don’t have to worry about cleaning them.

What makes them even better for travel? The shoes can be effortlessly dressed up or down. I’ve worn them to an elegant Iftar meal at the historic Qubba Palace or on a stroll in Old Cairo’s pottery village where I buy affordable handmade goods and take classes.

Lululemon Softstreme High-Rise Midi Skirt

An underrated, modest article of clothing is a midi skirt. Lululemon has a quality, super soft option that’s attainable quiet luxury at its finest. I like to pair it with a relaxed tee to balance out the skirt’s structure. Recently, I dressed up a midi with a tank and a blazer (so that it wasn’t too revealing) for a Suhoor — the second pre-fasting meal during Ramadan — at the Abdeen Palace.

Akk Memory Foam Lightweight Tennis Shoes

Comfy, tan sneakers were a priority on my Egypt packing list. I got a couple of inexpensive pairs at Amazon because I wanted to be able to get rid of them if they got too worn down. I’ve been here since February and my initial pair is still going strong.

Of course, beige was the clear color of choice and I often wear them with matching socks to combat the dusty terrain. I also love that they’re lightweight and a breeze to walk in.

Viodia Women's UPF 50+ Golf Shirt

There’s so much to do in Cairo, and I’ve been picking up tons of new hobbies, including golf. This is because many of the luxury hotels and resorts have golf courses .

I have a drawer full of polo shirts with both long and short sleeves that I wear with longer-length matching golf skorts . To mix things up, I also have a few golf dresses . (At the courses and resorts, in general, I’ve found that it’s more acceptable to wear shorter bottoms.) This shirt is great whether on the course or not as it has UPF 50+ sun protection built in, a necessity in these parts.

Banana Republic Ultra High-Rise Wide-Leg Crop Jean

Banana Republic

Wide-legged crops or culottes are my preferred pants. They’re flattering, breathable, and add shape to any look. If you’re coming to the desert, I say leave your skinnies at home.

I take things to another level with ultra-high rises. This silhouette, courtesy of Banana Republic, has a relaxed fit that complements any figure. Thankfully, the brand has a petite section , so I didn’t have to worry about hemming or getting the jeans tailored.

Blundstone High-Top Boots

Even though this is the desert, there are hiking trails in Cairo, and since the paths are filled with sand, you should wear high-top boots. I’ve been all about my pair of sturdy, shock-absorbing Blundstone boots.

Moreover, the boots look even better if they’re down making them ideal for walking around or strolling from one pyramid to another. It’s clear that when it comes to footwear, the less hassle, the better. They come in black and several shades of brown giving you plenty of options, too.

What will the weather be like?

With the exception of January, the month of December is the coldest of the year in Egypt. Although “cold” is a relative” term in a country that’s always fairly warm, it’s nevertheless a good time to bring a jacket and cooler weather apparel, especially for the evenings.

In Cairo, daytime temperatures range from 66 to 73°F and evenings drop down to a brisk 48 to 53°F. Farther south in places likeLuxor and Abu Simbel, days are warmer (about 73 to 79°F) but the nights are even chillier, ranging from 44 to 48°F.

December is the rainiest month of the year in Cairo and other parts of the country; however, that still only adds up to about three days of precipitation. It’s wise to bring a light raincoat but it’s doubtful you’ll experience any heavy storms.

What should I wear? Casual attire is appropriate everywhere, as long as it’s relatively modest. No short skirts or shorts. Plan to dress in layers for variable temperatures from morning to evening. As always, comfortable (broken-in) walking shoes are important.

Do I need to get any vaccinations? Nothing specific is required, but you should be up-to-date with all routine vaccinations. Consult the Cen ter for Disease Control website for current recommendations. Check with your physician at least 30 days prior to travel.

Are there any special precautions for COVID-19? Currently, all passengers traveling to Egypt must be in possession of a negative PCR test certificate for COVID-19, taken at a maximum of 72 hours before their flight departure time. 24 hours before departing Egypt for the United States, a local medical lab will come to our hotel and administer a Covid test, which is required by the US government, for reentry.

What about airfare? International airfare is not included in the package. We can assist with reservations for a service fee of $75 per person. (Service fee is waived for WOW! Travel Club alumni.)

Will I need an adaptor to plug in my appliances and chargers? Egypt uses a Type C (two pin) adapters. Please note: even with an adapter, a US hairdryer should not be used. All hotels will have hairdryers available.

Can I use my cell phone in Egypt? With most providers, it’s best to activate an international data and telephone plan. We suggest that you contact your carrier to discuss potential costs for data and voice communications.

What is the currency? The Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the national currency and the symbol is E£. At present, one EGP is worth approximately U.S. 6¢ ($.06).

What about travel insurance? We recommend  insurance to cover financial penalties if you need to cancel your trip. Information will be provided upon receipt of deposit. Here are links to two travel insurance providers: Travel Guard and MedJet .

Show Full Itinerary

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Egypt. You'll be met on arrival at Cairo International Airport and transferred to your hotel, before your Egyptian adventure begins with an important welcome meeting at 6 pm this evening. Cairo is one of the great cities of antiquity and its history can be symbolised by two imposing landmarks – the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. If you have some time spare, perhaps get out and explore the busy city streets or visit the Cairo Citadel which dates back to 1176 and is home to multiple museums and mosques.

This morning after breakfast you’ll see two of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Explore these structures which have stood tall for over 4500 years, and for an additional charge, you may be able to go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, although occasionally it’s closed to visitors. Afterwards, your adventure continues to the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of ancient artefacts. The masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun are an impressive sight – from jewellery to the famous golden death mask and his gilded sarcophagi, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

Jump in a private van today and drive to the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria. Egypt's second-largest city and main port, locals call this vibrant city the Bride of the Mediterranean Sea. The Greek architect Dinocrates built Alexandria in 331 BC under the orders of Alexander the Great. The city, immortalising Alexander's name, quickly flourished into a prominent cultural, intellectual, political and economic metropolis. On arrival, head underground and delve into the mysteries of the Kom ash-Shuqqafa catacombs. This Roman burial site is the largest of its kind in Egypt. The crypts are 20 metres below street level, and what probably began as a small family tomb grew into a labyrinth of chambers that could accommodate more than 300 bodies. Afterwards, stop by the strikingly modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, inspired by the original great library of Alexandria and built to hold over eight million books. Take some time to stroll along the Corniche and around Fort Qaitbey and enjoy the fresh Mediterranean air.

This morning, pay a visit to Wadi El Natron, a place used by the ancient Egyptians and Romans for extracting precious resources like salt, silica for making glass and carbonated sodium which was essential for the mummification process. Learn about the history of this fascinating place, view the lakes and soak up the surroundings before returning by private van to Cairo. Take some time to relax or get some snacks before you board an overnight sleeper train to Aswan.

The Nile, Elephantine Island and white-sailed feluccas. You’ll pull into Aswan – Egypt's southernmost city – at around 9am. Its easy-going charm is due in no small part to its large Nubian population. When you arrive, you’ll explore the beautiful Temple of Isis (the Goddess of health, marriage and wisdom), which was rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and relocated on Philae Island. It's a marvel of decorative pylons featuring some of Egypt's finest carvings – definitely one of the gems of Upper Egypt. This afternoon is yours to explore your way. You might choose to visit the excellent Nubian Museum, which showcases the history, art and culture of the Nubians. This evening you’ll experience modern Nubian culture firsthand with a visit to a nearby village. Join a local Nubian family for a memorable dinner where you’ll get to sample traditional dishes like okra stew or tagen, a tasty tomato-based tagen dish, with sanasel bread to mop up the delicious sauces.

This morning, make the drive from Aswan to Abu Simbel where you’ll explore some magnificent temples. Built by Ramses II, it was the gateway to Egypt for Southern Africans and its imposing facade clearly delineated the line between what was the Pharaoh's land and what was not. With the four gargantuan statues of Ramses guarding the Great Temple, carved directly out of the mountain on the west bank of the Nile, this is one of Egypt's most memorable sights. You'll have two hours to explore Abu Simbel before making the drive back to Aswan, where you’ll board your Nile cruise boat. Late in the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely sailing trip on a traditional felucca before dinner on the ship.

Enjoy a free morning in Aswan, perhaps enjoying coffee and exploration of the bazaar during the morning bustle. After lunch on board your ship, you’ll set sail for your first stop – Kom Ombo. This second century BC complex is unique because it has a mirror-image design, divided down the middle, with either side dedicated to a different set of gods. One half is known as the Temple of Sobek (the crocodile-headed god of fertility) and the other half is dedicated to Haroeris (also known as Horus the falcon god), and the whole temple is full of fascinating reliefs. Afterwards, return to the boat and travel upriver, with free time relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights – desert hills forming a backdrop to lush riverbanks, fishermen casting their nets and farmers working their land. Enjoy dinner on board, before your ship docks in Edfu late in the night.

This morning finds you moored near Edfu – a beautifully preserved temple also dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. After breakfast on board, your ship will sail onwards to Luxor, passing through the Esna Locks. Ships often have to queue to proceed through the locks, a great opportunity to check out the process from deck with a cool drink in hand, listening to the shouts of the many captains as they navigate their way through the various small boats of merchants selling their wares to a captive audience. On arrival in Luxor, join your leader for an orientation walk of the town. You have the option to visit Luxor Temple, which looks incredible, lit up at night. Return to the ship for dinner and your last night on board.

Your Nile cruise comes to an end in the open-air museum of Luxor. From the spectacular temple complex of Karnak to the Valley of the Kings, Luxor is full of wonderfully preserved reminders of the Pharaohs. After breakfast, depart the ship and drop your bags at your hotel in Luxor. From here, you’ll set off with your leader to explore Karnak Temple which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient Pharaoh’s monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak is a house of the gods built over a period of some 200 years. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun. The rest of the day is free for you to relax, shop in the excellent bazaar (open until quite late) or perhaps experience the atmosphere of a local teahouse.

Today you’ll hop in a private minivan and discover ancient Thebes. Your first stop is the Colossi of Memnon – two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Continue on to the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are over 60 tombs of pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. With your leader, explore this place, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BC) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where discoveries are still being made. Your group leader will explain the history and legends of these remarkable people, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well preserved in the deepest tombs. You will visit three of the royal tombs, including Tutankhamun’s tomb where Tutankhamun is buried, then continue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut – a colonnaded building set against high cliffs that create a spectacular natural amphitheatre. The afternoon is yours to explore – perhaps you'd like to shop in the market or visit the world's first Mummification Museum where you can discover the secrets of pharaonic preservation.

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and catch a short flight back to Cairo. On your return to the capital, visit the Islamic parts of the city and the frenetic backstreets of the bazaar with your leader. A labyrinth of narrow streets and passageways, Khan is one of the biggest and oldest markets in the world. The 'Khan', sprawling around an old area known as Al-Azhar, is a quintessentially Cairo experience – a warren of alleys with stalls serving up a succession of intoxicating scenes. You might explore the gold market, ‘Perfume Street’ and the spice market, where heady aromas fill the air, or make a purchase next door in the cloth market. Or you could visit atmospheric El Fishawy, one of Cairo’s oldest cafes, and discover why it’s been operating for more than 200 years. Tonight, perhaps gather together your fellow travellers for a celebratory kebab, kofta, sheesha, or all three.

There are no activities planned for the final day and you are free to depart at any time. Please ensure you confirm your hotel check-out time with your leader. If you would like to extend your stay in Cairo, we would be happy to arrange additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

Gay Egypt: Essential Knowledge, Safety Tips, and Destination Insight for LGBTQ+ Travelers!

Queer travel expert Jack Kenworthy turns 250+ city adventures into your guide for safe, vibrant, and inclusively fabulous global journeys.

Ancient pyramids silhouetted against the sunset, the Nile River’s tranquil flow, and tales of pharaohs and mummies; the allure of Egypt is undeniable. Yet, beneath the mesmerizing landscapes and historical wonders, a more intricate and delicate fabric weaves the story of Gay Egypt.

A land of contrasts, Egypt tantalizes with its breathtaking sites while challenging the LGBTQ+ community with a myriad of societal complexities.

The political tapestry of Egypt remains a delicate balance between tradition and aspiration. While homosexuality is not explicitly criminalized, laws around “debauchery” and “public morals” have been exploited to target the queer community.

Arrests, detentions, and social ostracization are real threats. Gay Egypt often remains hidden in shadows, where the vibrant beats of Gay Cairo ‘s underground queer nightlife echo tales of resilience and resistance. Here, in dimly lit corners, the LGBTQ+ community finds solace but also a continuous reminder of the need for discretion.

Gay Egypt Uncovered Top Destinations And Tips For Queer Travelers!

The lived experiences of Egypt’s queer citizens are multi-layered. They oscillate between pride in their identity and the ever-present knowledge of societal constraints. Yet, amidst these challenges, there exist pockets of acceptance, particularly within the cosmopolitan realms of the larger cities. As for travelers, it’s essential to remember that while the pyramids might beckon and the rich history invites, Gay Egypt is a realm requiring navigation with caution.

We firmly believe that queerness should never deter one’s wanderlust. After all, traveling is instrumental in cultural exchange, spreading pride, and fostering understanding. However, in the case of Gay Egypt, we must stress the potential dangers. Unless you’re prepared to be discreet and, at times, hide facets of your identity, it might be a journey best left for another time.

Still, for those adventurers whose spirits remain undaunted, Egypt awaits. But tread lightly, for while the ancient sands of time might be forgiving, the contemporary pathways of Gay Egypt demand prudence and respect.

History Of LGBT Rights In Egypt

LGBT rights in Egypt have a complex history. It is essential to note that homosexuality is not explicitly criminalized in Egypt. However, the authorities often use laws related to “debauchery” and “public morality” to target and persecute LGBT individuals. These regulations significantly impact local LGBT people and can also affect queer tourists visiting the country.

The situation for the LGBT community in Egypt has seen periods of relative tolerance and intense crackdowns, with large-scale arrests and public demonstrations of support or opposition. Since 2013, there has been a notable increase in actions against LGBT individuals, particularly following the 2017 Mashrou’ Leila concert, during which rainbow flags were flown by audience members. Although a proposed law explicitly criminalizing homosexuality was never passed, the crackdown has had a lasting impact on Egypt’s LGBT citizens and visitors alike.

As a traveler, it is crucial to be aware of the potential risks and challenges LGBT individuals may face in Egypt. Tourists are generally not targeted at the same level as local people; however, exercising discretion, maintaining a low profile, and avoiding public displays of affection can significantly reduce the likelihood of encountering issues.

Additionally, it is essential to remain informed about the political and cultural climate of Egypt before and during any travel. Situations can rapidly change, and information may become outdated. Always consult recent advice or local LGBT-friendly resources to gain the most accurate understanding of the current situation.

It is vital to remember that although Egypt’s legal stance towards homosexuality is ambiguous, the social environment can be openly hostile. Thus, it is crucial for LGBT travelers to educate themselves about local customs and attitudes. Stay vigilant, exercise caution, and maintain sensitivity and respect for local culture to protect yourself and contribute to a safer environment for the wider LGBT community in Egypt.

Gay Egypt - LBGT Egypt - Queer Egypt Travel Guide

The LGBT Current Situation In Egypt

In Egypt, the situation for LGBT individuals remains precarious. While Egyptian law does not explicitly criminalize same-sex sexual acts, it does criminalize homosexual activity under public morality laws. These provisions have been used to prosecute individuals for behavior or expression deemed immoral, scandalous, or offensive to religious teachings.

For local LGBT individuals in Egypt, there is a lack of legal recognition and protection. Same-sex marriage is not recognized, and there are no specific anti-discrimination laws covering employment, housing, or other areas. Additionally, changing one’s gender is legal but requires surgery, and non-binary gender identities are not legally recognized.

Tourists visiting Egypt should be aware that these challenges also apply to them. While you may not necessarily face the same level of scrutiny as local LGBT individuals, it is essential to exercise caution and remain vigilant, as bad actors could take advantage of the situation.

To protect yourself, it is advisable to avoid public displays of affection, limit discussing your sexual orientation or gender identity with those you do not trust, and use discretion when accessing LGBT-specific apps or websites. Keep in mind that Egyptian authorities have been known to use digital means and surveillance to target the LGBT community.

Remember that situations can change quickly, and information can become outdated. It is important to seek current advice before traveling to Egypt or any country where the rights and protections for LGBT individuals are limited. Above all, remain informed and cautious to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience during your travels.

The Future For The Queer Community In Egypt

Egypt has a complex relationship with the LGBTQ community, and there are significant differences in terms of rights and acceptance for local individuals versus tourists. As an LGBT traveler, it is crucial to provide accurate and up-to-date information to help readers navigate this often challenging environment.

For local people in Egypt, the situation is generally unfavorable. While homosexuality itself is not explicitly criminalized, other laws have been employed to prosecute LGBTQ individuals, often under the guise of “habits” or “morals” violations. Censorship of LGBTQ content is rampant, and discrimination in housing and employment is common, as protections do not exist. The recent crackdown on the LGBTQ community has further strained the situation, with the Egyptian government initiating anti-LGBTQ awareness campaigns in educational institutions in 2022.

Tourists, on the other hand, tend to experience fewer issues in terms of LGBTQ rights. However, it is crucial for those visiting Egypt to remain cautious and aware of local laws, culture, and expectations. Egypt’s conservative society means that overt displays of affection, particularly between individuals of the same sex, can lead to negative attention – and, potentially, interactions with law enforcement.

To protect yourself and maintain your safety, consider the following steps:

  • Research the situation in Egypt before your trip, seeking information from reputable sources and current travel advisories.
  • Exercise discretion in public spaces, refraining from overt displays of affection or discussing your sexual orientation openly, as this can attract unwanted attention.
  • Connect with other LGBTQ travelers or supportive individuals who may provide insights into safe spaces, events, and experiences to enhance your trip.

It is essential to recognize that situations can change rapidly, and information can become outdated. As such, always seek the most up-to-date advice before embarking on your journey. While caution is necessary, it is crucial to remember that there are positive and supportive people in every country, even in challenging environments like Egypt. Remain vigilant, stay informed, and travel safely.

Gay Egypt - LBGT Egypt - Queer Egypt Travel Guide

Protect Yourself While Travelling In Gay Egypt

It is essential to be aware of the current situation for LGBT rights in Egypt and how it may affect both local individuals and tourists. Contemporary Egyptian law does not explicitly criminalize same-sex sexual acts, but the expression of ideas related to homosexuality may be prosecuted under public morality laws. Egyptian authorities have been known to target LGBT people, and the country has seen a recent crackdown, including anti-LGBTQ awareness campaigns in schools.

While Egypt’s stance on LGBT rights primarily affects its local population, tourists should still take precautions to protect themselves. Since the legal situation in Egypt can be vague, it is best to err on the side of caution and exercise discretion when discussing and displaying any LGBTQ-related subjects.

To help ensure your safety and comfort during your stay in Egypt, consider taking the following measures:

  • Be aware of local customs and attitudes towards LGBTQ topics. Avoid engaging in public displays of affection or discussing your sexual orientation or gender identity in public spaces, as this may draw unwanted attention.
  • Seek out queer-friendly spaces and businesses when possible. Although they may be less common in Egypt, connecting with local or expat LGBTQ communities can provide a safe and supportive environment during your trip.
  • Have access to emergency contacts and resources, including your country’s embassy or consulate in Egypt, and be prepared with a plan in case you face any issues or discrimination.
  • Stay current on local events and changes in legislation. Since situations can change quickly, it is important to seek up-to-date advice and information before and during your trip to Egypt.

Always remember that while Egypt may present unique challenges for LGBTQ travelers, there are potential risks and bad actors in every country. Remain vigilant and prioritize your safety and well-being as you explore new destinations. Furthermore, keep in mind that information and advice can become outdated, so seeking current guidance before embarking on your journey is essential in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Conflict in neighbouring Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs)

The Israeli government has declared a state of emergency across the whole country. International borders in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) could close at short notice. As a result, the land border into Israel from Egypt at Taba could close with little notice. Check with local authorities and consult the travel advice for  Israel  and the  Occupied Palestinian Territories  before trying to cross the border.

In response to events in Israel and the OPTs, a number of demonstrations have taken place in Egypt and protests have been planned, including after Friday prayers. Demonstrations could take place at short notice, with a heavy security presence in place. You should avoid large gatherings, demonstrations and protests. See  Safety and security

Entering Egypt from Gaza

The Rafah border crossing partially opened on 1 November. This is primarily to facilitate the evacuation of seriously wounded Palestinians and some foreign nationals. We understand that the crossing will continue to be open for controlled and time-limited periods to allow specific groups of foreign nationals, including British nationals, to cross. It is for the Egyptian and Israeli authorities to determine who is permitted to cross, and when. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will contact Embassies to let them know when their foreign nationals can cross. Should we receive notification from the Israeli and Egyptian authorities that individuals are permitted to cross, we will notify those people individually.

Movement to the Rafah crossing and beyond is at your own risk. You should only travel if you judge it is safe to do so. Check the  Israel and The Occupied Palestinian Territories travel advice.

The Egyptian authorities have said all aid going into Gaza from Egypt must be channelled through the Egyptian Red Crescent:

  • telephone: + 20 226 703 979, + 20 226 703 983
  • fax: + 20 226 703 967

They are unlikely to consider requests for humanitarian access made in Egypt at short notice.

Incidents in South Sinai

On 27 October, an Egyptian Armed Forces spokesperson confirmed that an unidentified drone fell near a medical facility in the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Taba next to the Israeli border, injuring six people. An additional unidentified drone also struck outside the town of Nuweiba, though no casualties have been confirmed. The authorities are conducting ongoing investigations.

Incident in Alexandria

On 8 October 2023, an Egyptian police officer is reported to have shot and killed two Israeli tourists and an Egyptian tour guide in Alexandria. A third tourist was injured. Remain vigilant and exercise caution at tourist and religious sites, as well as public gatherings. Find out more information on current risks on the  Safety and security .

Border crossings from Sudan

There are still people trying to cross the border into Egypt at Argeen and Qustul. Our ability to provide consular assistance is very limited.

If you are a British national and have crossed the border without valid documentation, contact the British Embassy in Cairo for consular assistance on + 20 (0)2 2791 6000.

Inside the Vancouver Canucks’ team plane during a breakthrough season

Inside the Vancouver Canucks’ team plane during a breakthrough season

Flying on an NHL team’s charter plane is a one-of-a-kind experience. The amenities and perks are five-star. There’s a distinct camaraderie in traveling with teammates as well as some traditions and guidelines to consider.

Dressing for flights, for example, has quirks. The collective bargaining agreement requires that players wear jackets, ties and dress pants while traveling to and from games. But since teams are relaxed with this rule once players have boarded the plane, it can result in a hilarious scene minutes before takeoff.

“I remember my first (dad’s) trip (in the NHL), we get on the plane, all of a sudden guys start whipping their clothes off (and changing into sweats) and it’s like ‘What are you guys doing?’” said veteran defenseman Ian Cole .

“Long trips like three hours (or longer), you don’t wanna be sitting in your dress pants and a dress shirt,” he explained. “It’s pretty funny seeing 20 guys on the plane just shedding all their clothes as fast they can.”

Players then change back into their formal attire before deplaning. It’s just one example that shows how an NHL player’s charter plane experience isn’t a typical travel day.

As the Vancouver Canucks embark on the most pivotal trip of the year to date for Games 3 and 4 in Nashville of their first-round playoff series, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s been like on the team plane this season.

First-class seats, top-notch dining and special recovery tools

The Canucks are serviced by Air Canada’s Jetz division. Their aircraft features two first-class-sized seats on each row, two card tables and space in the exit row for recovery work. It’s comfy and spacious.

“Being a bigger guy, the bigger seats obviously are nice for me,” Tyler Myers said with a laugh. “We have the same flight attendants all year and they get to know you, you get to know them really well. They know exactly what we want when we get on the plane.”

Veteran players typically sit near the back, whereas players with fewer NHL seasons under their belt are farther up.

Brock Boeser explained that the team caters food from the airport when leaving Vancouver. During the rest of a road trip, plane meals are from a high-quality restaurant in the city where they’ve just played.

“The meals on the plane are nice, (especially) compared to stopping at the gas station after the games for food (in the minors),” said Dakota Joshua , who’s also experienced the much more unglamorous travel in the AHL and ECHL.

Some players like Conor Garland are fairly regimented about what they eat on board.

“I usually try to get a salad,” said Garland. “I don’t like the chopped salad but sometimes you gotta eat it. I eat the nuts, chopped salad and I bring my own coffee.”

Others like Phil Di Giuseppe like to rotate through dishes like steak, fish or pasta.

“Huggy’s ( Quinn Hughes ) by me and he’s always snacking on something,” said Boeser. “He’s a health nut.”

Another perk of flying on a charter aircraft is that the exit rows have space for players to do recovery work. This includes tools such as blood flow recovery (BFR) or Normatec technology, which is marketed to increase circulation and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness.

“BFR is good for your legs, you can jump on those for a bit, maybe for 25 minutes. You can lay down, stretch,” said Garland. “Anything you really need, they’ll get it for you on the plane recovery-wise.

“(Mark Cesari, Canucks strength and conditioning coach) and Alex Trinca (Canucks director of sports performance) are great, even if you have a question about like ‘What should I be drinking on the flight?’”

The card table: ‘Too much bickering’

How do Canucks players pass the time on flights? It varies.

Joshua tries to take a nap because he doesn’t like plane rides, but most players said they have trouble falling asleep.

“It takes you like 5-6 hours (after a game) to try to decompress and calm the central nervous system down,” said Cole. “There’s not a ton of sleeping going on unless it’s a long flight from one side of the continent to the other.”

There are book readers (such as Cole), movie watchers and players who rely on iPads to keep them entertained.

“Garly’s pretty chatty,” said Boeser. “He’ll always be in the aisle talking to other people. A guy that’s pretty dialed in on his laptop is Casey (DeSmith), I don’t know what he’s doing on there.”

“He’s pretty wild on the plane,” Joshua added about Garland.

There will usually be a group of Canucks playing cards for small sums of money, too.

“I’ve been on some teams where it (the money being wagered) gets real aggressive,” said Cole. “It’s not that aggressive here, which is good. We’ve got some boys trying to rein it in a little.”

The players have shuffled throughout the year, but Garland, Sam Lafferty , Filip Hronek and Pius Suter were at the card table early in the season playing a game called 13 Up.

“The highlight of the trips is getting to laugh at the card table,” said Garland. “In Arizona, my card table was my three best friends. it’s been new this year with guys you didn’t know before. Usually you end up going for dinner with those guys because you end up making plans on the plane.”

J.T. Miller and Boeser retired from the card table after spending most of last season with the group.

“(We were) taking too much of their money,” Di Giuseppe joked when asked why Miller and Boeser left. “No, I think they were saying they were playing for so long that they wanted to watch some movies. Maybe it was because of me.”

“Too much bickering,” Boeser said with a smile, explaining his departure.

Garland claimed that he’s been cleaning up this season because the newcomers aren’t very good.

“We have a bad table,” he said. “Last year, Millsy’s a really good player, (Jack) Studnicka was a good player. Boes is OK. This year they’re bad, so it’s pretty easy.” He acknowledged that Di Giuseppe’s “not bad.”

“I’m surprised he said I wasn’t bad, usually he gives it to me,” Di Giuseppe said with a chuckle.

“After a game, I like playing at the table because we’ll dissect the game. That’s another way to flush it out is if it’s good, everyone’s happy and you’re shooting the you know what. And if it’s bad, you just kinda let out the demons.”

The Nintendo Switch turned movie club

At the start of the season, Boeser bought Nintendo Switches and formed a group that would play a PGA Golf video game. Miller and Elias Pettersson were the other regulars, with Myers and Thatcher Demko joining once in a while, according to Boeser.

“It’s one of the only games that most guys would enjoy and play against each other,” said Boeser. “We’re all even right now. Nobody gives strokes yet.”

They still play every so often but over the season, it’s transitioned into a movie club.

“Millsy and Brock were just so much better than everybody else that they just kinda cut us out. They were just being really bad guys doing that,” Myers laughed. “Movie club kind of took over.”

The players will synchronize their iPads together to start a film at the same time. They take turns choosing the movie.

Who’s the best and worst at picking them?

“Best is between Demmer and I. Worst is between Brock and Millsy,” said Myers. “Millsy is a good movie guy but he has a tough time grasping the concept of what types of movies we’re trying to bring into movie club.

“Demmer and I seem to be quality control and Brock isn’t as familiar with movies so he tends to bring in a lot of random ones that probably would never make Demmer and I’s list.”

Forgotten passports and unwritten rules

Most of the Canucks’ plane rides are routine, but The Athletic was curious if the players could share any funny or unique travel tales from this season.

Boeser immediately turned when he heard the question, stared at Joshua in his dressing room stall and smiled: “Just Dak holding us up this year for 45 minutes.”

“Who forgot their passport?” Brock continued while still looking at Joshua.

“Bainsey! (Arshdeep Bains),” Joshua replied.

“Yeah, Bainsey, we had a preseason game going to Seattle and he forgot his passport so that was pretty funny,” said Boeser.

Speaking of passports, crossing the border and clearing customs is something players like to groan about because it adds another layer (and time) to the trip.

“If (it’s another Canadian team) you’re just pulling up to the plane but since you gotta go over the border it’s more of a hassle. It’s not that bad, but we like to complain about it,” said Joshua.

Once players board the plane, there are a couple of unwritten rules for etiquette.

“You can’t take a poop on the plane,” said Cole.

Cole also said that when the team gets off the plane or bus they’ll typically exit from the back forward, with veteran players off first.

“But it’s also not a hard and fast rule,” he explained. “If someone steps up and goes, whatever. Or if someone’s taking a while, guys go, it’s never like a ‘Hey, you guys need to wait.’”

Vancouver’s travel over an 82-game schedule is grueling, with substantially longer flights on average compared to Eastern Conference teams. For example, the trip between Vancouver and Nashville is by far the longest distance of any first-round series. Their travel situation is a disadvantage the Canucks have to accept, but they try to make the most of it.

“It’s a pretty chill group, we’re not the ’86 Mets on the plane, you know?” Joshua said with a laugh.
”We just go about the business, get on and get off.”

With the Canucks arriving in Tennessee on Wednesday, they’re preparing for arguably their biggest challenge yet. Many of Vancouver’s core players will be playing in front of an intimidating road playoff crowd for the first time, Demko remains out with an injury and the series is tied 1-1 after a Game 2 loss .

It’s a season-defining trip — and the result will swing the mood of the flight home to Vancouver after Sunday’s Game 4 for better or worse.

Royal Caribbean and the government of the Bahamas broke ground Monday on the joint venture to develop a strip of land in the cruise port of Nassau called Paradise Island.

The government in 2023 gave the OK for the cruise line to develop a 17-acre portion into what will be called Royal Beach Club Paradise Island when it opens in 2025. Cruise line executives and government officials, including Prime Minister Philip Davis, grabbed shovels along the white sandy beaches with turquoise water in the background.

“With the signing of the deal [for] Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, we embark on this project to further enhance the vitality of our tourism product,” Davis said. “Signing today’s agreement, we add another world-class experience to our tourism offerings. And even more importantly, we take a bold step toward greater Bahamian empowerment in the tourism industry.”

The site is on the western edge of the strip of land that runs alongside the waterway through which ships brought nearly 4.5 million passengers in 2023, making Nassau the world’s busiest cruise port of call.

Royal Caribbean’s site expects about 2,000 visitors a day. They will be ferried over from the port but then return by land going through downtown Nassau.

It’s the first site for the smaller-sized beach club private destination Royal Caribbean plans to build out as opposed to its private island and resort destinations such as Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas and Labadee on Haiti’s northern coast.

The Paradise Island spot will play up Bahamian culture alongside traditional offerings such as the beach, cabanas, four food and drink venues and three pools with swim-up bars. The site is being designed by a Bahamian architectural firm, and will give space for local artisan work for sale and live local music.

The project is a public-private partnership under which Bahamians are invited to own up to 49% of it. The plan is for locals to manage the experiences offered at the resort.

The cruise line will own 13 acres of the property while 4 acres go to Crown Land, which is a territorial area owned by the state. The cruise line will also pay a new tourism levy in exchange for the development.

“Marking more than the beginning of the construction process, today’s groundbreaking event symbolizes partnership, momentum and continued economic development for so many Bahamian entrepreneurs and the entire community,” said Jason Liberty, the cruise line parent company Royal Caribbean Group’s President and CEO. “We are grateful to our partners for their support, especially the Bahamian government, who stand with us here today in celebration of what is to come.”

The additional attraction to the port augments a $300 million overhaul of the Nassau Cruise Port that had its grand opening last year.

Already the port has expanded its capacity to six ships, including the ability to dock three of the massive Oasis-class ships from Royal Caribbean at once.

The revamp includes a new terminal building, Junkanoo museum, 3,500-person amphitheater, living coral exhibit plus more entertainment, food, beverage and retail space. Once complete, the port’s capacity will jump to more than 33,000 passengers per day. It had been around 20,000 a day.
