New study names Hickory, NC as the most beautiful and affordable place to live in the U.S.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new  article from Travel and Leisure  ranks Hickory, North Carolina as the most beautiful and affordable place to live in the U.S. Greenville, S.C. and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. also made the top ten list.

The rankings factor in affordability, beauty and quality of life in order to provide a well-rounded idea for people looking to relocate.

The list uses data from  U.S. News & World Report's  2022-2023 rankings on the  best  and  most affordable  places to live in the U.S., which includes data on the cost of living, median monthly rent, median home price and overall quality of life. 

U.S. News & World Report  named Hickory as the No.1 cheapest place to live  in their 2022-2023 ranking.

Why was Hickory named the No.1 most beautiful and affordable place to live?

Well, the median home price of $161,000 definitely speaks to the affordability factor. 

Hickory's location, in the foothills of the  Blue Ridge Mountains , to the east of Asheville, makes it "a family-friendly destination known for its ample hiking trails and Southern charm," according to Travel and Leisure.

Aside from that, Hickory has become more desirable to young families more recently, due to its "newfound fame as a technological hub for Google and Apple." 

Greenville, S.C. ranked No.3 in the list, with downtown revitalization and affordability named as important factors. 

Raleigh-Durham, N.C. came in at No. 8, thanks to a growing job market and its status as a desirable place to raise a family, although the median housing price of $436,700 is right there with the national median.

Hickory is a charming little North Carolina city set in Catawba County. Set at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Hickory is an easy day trip away from Charlotte , Asheville, and Winston-Salem .

Being within an hour’s drive from each makes it a particularly popular hotspot in the area. Hickory is known as the birthplace of NASCAR stars and is famous for having some of the best furniture in the state. 

The downtown has recently been revitalized while much of the alluring historic architecture has been carefully preserved. There’s an abundance of cultural attractions to explore from museums and art institutions, to specialty shops and outdoor adventures. The Best Things to Do in Hickory, NC

One of the best things to do in Hickory, NC is visit a few of the wonderful museums. The Hickory Museum of Art is a beloved bastion of the arts, and one of the most well-known spaces of its kind in the entire state. It first opened way back in 1944 and continues to display iconic works spanning from the 19th century to today.

Exhibits are from both permanent and rotating collections which feature pieces of everything from local folk art and world-renowned installations by the likes of Andy Warhol. Art classes are often held here on a varied range of topics, such as ceramics and abstract painting.

Catawba Science Center

Catawba Science Center is a family-friendly space that has entertaining and engaging exhibits for all ages. It’s got a bit of everything here, including an impressive planetarium that hosts laser light shows and constellation lectures and a massive marine life environment with an array of species from stingrays to sharks.

It’s set inside an old victorian building and has been around for over half a century. It’s such a fun way to immerse yourself in learning more about the scientific realm with dramatic displays on energy, space, weather, plants, and the famous Gross Labs.

Hickory Aviation Museum

The Hickory Aviation Museum displays an impressive collection of significant artifacts spanning from World War II to the modern-day. It’s actually located at the Hickory Regional Airport itself and serves to honor the golden age of aircraft.

The collection is incredibly well maintained, with some famous specimens of flight like the Wright Flyer and the F-18 Hornet. Take a peek inside seriously old engines and learn the mechanics behind how these beautiful steel birds made it up into the sky in the first place.

Henry Fork River Park

Henry Ford River Park is a lovely outdoor oasis in the city for spending a day soaking up some fresh air. Wander the paved nature trail to stretch your legs in the warm Carolina sunshine. The spacious landscape features plenty of amenities for all to enjoy.

There are also several sports fields and playgrounds. It’s one of the best places around to pack up some snacks and enjoy a picnic under their 8,000 square foot shelter equipped with barbecue grills, tables, and restrooms.

For fun, games, and action-packed pastimes there are also horseshoe pits, a canoe launch, and the Alpine Ropes Course. If you work up an appetite you’ll even find a concession stand on-site.

The Harper House

This iconic facade serves as the Hickory History Center and was once the abode of a prominent family of the same name. It’s heralded as an incredible example of Queen Anne style architecture, a classic facade design of the Victorian era.

Take a guided tour and step back into the 1800s to see what life looked like back then. There are a few exhibits of vintage treasures from the time and many facets of the space have been well preserved like stunning stained glass and twirling staircases.

Bakers Mountain Park

Bakers Mountain has the highest elevation in all of Catawba county at 1780 feet. As such, the sweeping panoramas from the prominent peak are picturesque, to say the least. A large wooden platform stretches up high above the breathtaking terrain.

The park itself spans over 180 acres and has an enchanting network of nature trails to trek and traverse over six miles. Hike or bike through the local flora and fauna-filled scenery featuring lush mountain laurel and hardwood forest.

Downtown Hickory Farmers Market

For all the freshest produce grown locally in the region, stop by the Downtown Hickory Farmers Market where vendors gather to display their gorgeous seasonal goods. Whether you’re browsing or buying, the sea of specialty stalls is a fun scene to stroll through and support and is one of the best things to do in Hickory!

All the wholesome favorites like fruits, veggies, eggs, cheese, meats, and flowers are readily available, but that’s not all! There are handmade baked treats, preserves, and teas to taste test, as well as artisan crafts like ceramics, cosmetics, and jewelry.

Carolina Theater

The Carolina Theater in Hickory is absolutely packed with personality and character. It was originally constructed in 1934 and maintains oodles of its original charm. The space has been renovated to highlight its historic nature with classic touches like hardwood floors and some spiffy versions of its famous rocking chair seats.

They show second-run films at a discounted price, for a cheap and cheerful way to spend an afternoon or evening in the city.

Taproot Coffee Bus

The Taproot Coffee Bus has become a legendary fixture of the Hickory java scene. Tourists and locals alike always make stopping in here a priority during any jaunt around town. It’s one of the cooler, more unique places in the city as it’s more than just your average cafe. It’s actually set inside of a renovated bus!

The space is adorably kitschy and the coffee here happens to be perfectly curated as well. They roast their own beans and offer an array of brewing methods like french press, aeropress, chemex, melta pot and more.

Catawba Farms

Set in the neighboring hamlet of Newton nearby lies the scenic Catawba Farms . It’s home to a vast 34 acres of lush landscape and is such a stunning spot to visit for some North Carolina wine . Perfect for nature lovers and wine connoisseurs, verdant vineyards cover much of the terrain.

They have a quaint tasting room where you can take a tour and then try all their high-quality varietals and you can even pair them with freshly made plates of fantastic fares.

Enjoy the Festivals

Hickory is home to many elaborate events held all throughout the year. The Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival draws in all kinds of vintage lovers seeking out memorabilia and ornate folk-style ceramics. Next is the Hickory Hops Festival, the perfect event for craft beer aficionados. Footcandle Film Festival brings the cinephiles to the city.

The annual Oktoberfest can be quite a draw here as well, not just to see the foliage, but for the authentic German eats and entertainment as well. 

Hart Square

Hart Square is certainly the coolest ghost town that you’ve never heard of. It’s set up basically as an open air museum and holds the title of the world’s largest collection of historic log structures set on a 200 acre nature preserve.

The cabins were rescued from all over the state, including 30 homes, two churches, and many trade shops. Each cabin is furnished with authentic artifacts from the pioneer days. They host a lot of events like carving classes and special dinners and it’s a great way to unplug and be transported back to a much, much simpler time.

Explore Downtown Hickory

The downtown district of Hickory is the beating heart of the city and a hub for the community. It’s home to some of the best eateries and boutiques in the area. First, hit the hidden gem Harris Arcade, a little alley with a curated collection of specialty shops.

When wandering the charming streets, check out the Natural Olive for gourmet goodies and Life Doesn’t Succ, a punny spot supplying the town with pretty plant life. Carolina Crafted offers the cutest locally made home furnishings.

Bottega is a funky artistic space selling original wares like jewelry and clothing. If you’re into beauty and bath products, the Artisan Soapery i s likely your dream destination. 

Hickory Motor Speedway

Hickory is well known for churning out future stars of the NASCAR world, and a visit to the Hickory Motor Speedway is a fun way to experience this part of Carolina culture. It was constructed in 1953 and today is part museum, part speedway. It’s home to the world’s most famous short track and many races throughout the year are held at this prominent venue.

Hickory Furniture Mart 

Hickory Furniture Mart is a famous and long-standing fixture of the city. In many ways, it put the town on the map as far as a delightful destination for anyone seeking quality home furnishings. Today people flock from all over the state to shop in this massive mecca of decor. While furniture shopping may not be on your typical things to do in Hickory list, we can assure you the furniture mart is a fun time!

It boasts four stories in total, filled with an eclectic mix of independent retailers, outlets, showrooms, and custom shops to explore. There really is something for every preference and price point here, and it’s even fun just to wander through the rooms and play house.

AR Workshop

AR Workshop is a craft studio in Hickory that makes for a fun and unique thing to do while in town. More specifically billed as a wine and painting wood sign studio, there is a full schedule of classes, workshops, and events to check out or try your hand at.

Fun for any skill level, it’s a great way to get creative and have a new experience. Knit your own chunky blanket or carve your own set of cornhole boards. It really runs the gambit so you’re sure to find a skill session that piques your interest here while in Hickory.

Hickory Community Theater

Hickory Community Theater is a beloved venue providing a plethora of performing arts for all to attend and enjoy. It’s housed in the historic building dubbed the city’s Old Town Hall and several productions are showcased throughout the year. It’s been around since 1948 and today is an inclusive space that aims to unite, inspire, and entertain the local community.

Some plays that have graced this stage in the past have included The Color Purple: A Musical and the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Hickory Crawdads

A claim to fame of Hickory is that it’s home to the charismatic minor league baseball team, the Crawdads . Games are played in the beloved L.P. Frans Stadium, which has over 4,000 seats and hosts many tournaments over the course of the year.

There are a handful of cafes and eateries to go and chow down at as well, which, let’s be honest, is half the fun of any sporting event. The other entertainment comes from all the local support and team spirit played out with adorable antics from the crowd and mascot during the games.

Maple Grove

Also called Shuford House , Maple Grove is a Southern abode in Hickory dating back to 1883. It’s widely considered to be one of the oldest homes in the area. It was built in a classic Italianate style which has since been restored complete with authentic Victorian furnishings. Some of the decor belonged to the original family who helped to found the town of Hickory.

You can explore it on a tour that takes you through the impressive estate and all its period room exhibits. You can go for a self guided experience or with a trained docent to learn more about the rich history of the home.

Geitner Park

For a relaxing day surrounded by the natural wonders of Hickory, head to Geitner Park . The scenery here is stunning and it’s a popular pick for hiking. There are several trails that are easy to navigate for any skill level that traverse the idyllic terrain.

It’s a tranquil environment to explore, and many go to get out on the water from the beautiful boat launch ramp, whether it’s for fishing or simply paddling away. There’s a quaint pier where anglers adore casting a reel from as well, waiting in a verdant oasis for that big catch.

Hickory is a town in North Carolina , located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the shores of the Catawba River . It sits between Charlotte and Asheville along I-40. This lovely town has the perfect balance of small town charm and big city amenities. Hickory offers something for everyone. From amazing restaurants, and eclectic downtown shops, to outdoor adventures, arts, history and culture.

I was invited by @visithickorymetro to spend a weekend in Hickory, NC, explore the town, try the restaurants, and participate in some events. I got to choose where to go and what to do as well as where to stay and all the opinions are mine. I put together this guide based on my experience and added a few places that I was recommended but didn’t have time to visit during this trip. I hope y’all enjoy it! #visithickorymetro   #myhky

WHERE TO STAY?

The best place to stay in Hickory, NC is in the downtown area . Hickory is pretty safe, and you can use the City Walk, which is part of a spanning 10 miles of trails that connects the city’s most popular attractions and restaurants. If you want to stay right in downtown in a walking distance to the City Walk, I recommend you to stay at the 2nd Street Inn , which is an unique Airbnb right in the heart of Hickory. If you prefer B&Bs and you want to stay a little outside downtown, Sweet Tea Bed & Breakfast would be a great option. Other amazing places to stay near Hickory is The Holly & Ivy Inn , The Peacock Inn at Catawba Farms and the Lodge at the Rock Barn Country Club & Spa .

We stayed at the 2nd Street Inn . The place was unique and very well located in a walking distance to coffee shops and restaurants in downtown Hickory. We stayed in the ‘The Brookford Room’ on the first floor. Our room was nice and clean, small but cozy, and there was a mini fridge, a tv and a nice and clean bathroom. The inn has a second floor, common area with a shared kitchen, and free parking.

WHERE TO EAT?

BREAKFAST & BRUNCH

Looking for a great spot to enjoy a cup of coffee? Waterbean Coffee (photos above) is a NC franchise that serves delicious coffee and pastries, Taste Full Beans is a local coffee shop in downtown Hickory, that has been serving a huge variety of hot, iced and frozen coffee since 2001, and there’s also Taproot Coffee , the “Coffee Bus”, a cute renovated bus and a Hickory Icon that serves expresso drinks and more. Or maybe the best brunch spot in town? Try Notions or the Olde Hickory Station in downtown Hickory, or try Cafe Rule , Cafe Gouda , and Hart and Soul Cafe . (TIP: Click on the restaurant name to see their reviews on Yelp ).

Looking for a quick bite? You can try some local’s favorites! Standard Oyster Company serves delicious and fresh raw, fried, steamed or broiled oysters. They also have other seafood options like Maine lobster and Alaskan snow crab. My husband was lucky to be there when they were serving raw oysters for $1 each! Other places that were recommended to me was the Olde Hickory Station in downtown, an old train station that is now a pub serving American cuisine (sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, wings) and the Hatch Sandwich Bar . I was craving fish & chips so I went to Backstreets Bar and Grill . Craving Indian food? Try Taj Hickory ! Want pizza? Try Wood . Asian fusion? Try Bubbly’s ! Notions also serve lunch and their menu also look amazing!

Why 'travel + leisure' says raleigh, n.c., is booming.

Raleigh is booming. 

But don't just take our word for it. 

That's the exact phrase  Travel + Leisure uses to describe the City of Oaks in the March 2022 edition of the magazine ("Change in Motion," written by Betsy Andrews, is not yet available to read online). It's a statement that's hard to argue with—the last 15 years in Raleigh have seen a lot of change. 

When the Raleigh Convention Center opened in Sept. 2008—bringing with it an influx of out-of-town visitors for meetings and special events—it gave the green light for hospitality businesses to breathe new life into downtown Raleigh . 

Just a handful of months prior, chef Ashley Christensen had opened the doors to Poole's Diner —thought by many to be the defining restaurant of modern-day Raleigh's sizzling food scene and for which she was named America's best chef in 2019 —before ultimately following her opening act with a  chicken and waffle spot , an  underground liquor bar , a  wood-fired contemporary restaurant  and a Neapolitan-inspired pizza joint.

Christensen's work paved a path for other restaurants and visitor attractions to build upon. 

Both Cheetie Kumar's Garland and Chris Hylton's ORO Restaurant & Lounge—two of Raleigh's most prominent chefs and restaurants—turn 10 years old this year;  Videri Chocolate Factory and CAM Raleigh  celebrated 10 years last year; and  Crank Arm Brewing and Trophy Brewing Company will both cheers to a decade of great beer in 2023.

There's more, of course. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences —consistently one of the state's most-visited tourist attractions—opened a new wing, the Nature Research Center, in 2012 (and a critical new exhibit, Dueling Dinosaurs , will make its debut next year).

Two food halls— Morgan Street Food Hall and Transfer Co. Food Hall —have opened within a handful of blocks of the North Carolina State Capitol since 2018 (a third, Craften Neighborhood Food & Drink, opened in Knightdale, N.C. , this year).

And legendary pit-master Sam Jones brought national attention to Raleigh in 2021 when his newest namesake restaurant opened near the city's center . 

( Five Star Restaurant  [opened in 2000], Hibernian Restaurant & Pub [2000],  Raleigh Times Bar  [2006], Marbles Kids Museum [2007] and  Sono Japanese Restaurant  [2008] are among the many, many others that have also played an instrumental role in Raleigh's growth)

  It's also true that the City of Oaks wouldn't be called as such without world-class outdoor spaces. 

Moore Square —one of the original public green spaces laid out in the city plans way back in 1792—completed a major renovation in 2019. It's now home to concerts, movie nights, a weekly farmers' market , the Black Flea Market and more.

The Neuse River Greenway Trail —a 27.5-mile paved path stretching down the eastern border of Raleigh that opened in phases from 2012 to 2014—has been named among America's most scenic bike rides (and it's our top pick for a perfect outdoor spring or fall activity ).

And  Dorothea Dix Park —underway with a transformative 20-year master plan that's considered one of the nation's most exciting urban park projects—is already a favorite local hangout thanks to skyline views and open fields that play home to an array of events and festivals.

Said festivals have become an integral part of the culture in Raleigh, bringing together community to celebrate and showcase history, creativity, delicious foods and beverages and so much more. 

Just next month, local rapper J. Cole's Dreamville Festival (April 2-3) will return to Dix Park, bringing 40,000 people together for the two-day jam fest; Brewgaloo (April 22-23)—twice voted America's best beer festival by USA TODAY readers and considered the largest craft beer event in the state—will take over downtown Raleigh, lining up more than 100 local breweries, 50 food trucks and all-day live music for the 11th annual event; and Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival (April 30) will fill the streets of downtown Cary with art—paintings, jewelry, sculptures and more—for the 29th annual showcase.

Later this year, Out! Raleigh Pride (June 25) will hold a 10th annual festival, gathering more than 50,000 people to celebrate and promote diversity and inclusiveness, and the arrival of IBMA's World of Bluegrass (Sept. 27-Oct. 1) will mark the 10th time the toe-tappin', banjo-strummin' week of non-stop music has called Raleigh home as well.

  More visitors to Raleigh—and a change in traveler demands—has created a need for new and more unique accommodations, and that is the crux of what Travel + Leisure says has elevated the experience of visiting the Tar Heel State's capital city. 

April will mark the one-year anniversary of the opening of Heights House Hotel , a 160-year-old mansion (and National Historic Landmark) in downtown Raleigh that was completely restored and revitalized by Raleigh residents Sarah and Jeff Shepherd. 

Named for its location within Raleigh's historic Boylan Heights neighborhood, the 10,000-square-foot, Italianate-style mansion features nine ensuite guest rooms, 15-foot ceilings and original hardwood floors throughout the space, a total of 10 cozy fireplaces and grand common spaces crafted with immaculate detail and decorated with modern and vintage touches.

Heights House is among a growing number of independent and boutique-style hotels that have opened in the downtown Raleigh area in the last few years. 

Guest House Raleigh , an eight-room inn located near Transfer Co. Food Hall, opened in 2018 in an 1880s home that the owners saved from demolition; opened in early 2020, vintage motor lodge charm meets contemporary comfort at  The Longleaf Hotel , where a patio hangout space is a favorite among locals; at  Hotel 83 , a stylish and modern full-service property offers a raved-about restaurant on site— Good Day Good Night —in Raleigh's  Warehouse District ; and the AC Hotel Raleigh Downtown opened in late 2021, bringing European design (and a rooftop bar) to the Glenwood South entertainment district . 

These properties join two more of the region's favorite independent, boutique hotels— The Umstead Hotel and Spa and The Mayton , both in Cary.

There's more development on the way, including hotels that are already under construction and some that will be soon (a large boutique property—that we can't name just yet—is slated to break ground late next year). 

Another landmark project under construction is North Carolina Freedom Park , a space that will honor African American struggles and triumphs in pursuit of freedom, justice, equality and opportunity⁠. Expected to open in early 2023 directly across from the North Carolina State Legislative Building , the park was designed by late architect Phil Freelon and will act as a gathering space for speeches and readings, musical events, dramatic productions and other activities.

And in Cary—where a signature park project of it's own will be unveiled next summer—the Fenton development is ready to open the first phase of it's much-anticipated live-work-play destination any day now. In total, the mixed-use district has plans for 440,000 square feet of retail space, a high-end hotel, 800 multifamily housing units, a movie theater, boutique fitness club, grocery store and high-profile restaurants that include  Crawford Brothers Steakhouse  (from award-winning  chef Scott Crawford ), M Sushi (a second location for the critically acclaimed Durham sushi spot),  Superica  (chef Ford Fry's boutique Tex-Mex chain) and more. 

So yes, led by a group of passionate entrepreneurs, artists and activists, it's safe to say that the Raleigh area is changing. Booming even. And with spring in the air, now is the perfect time to jump back in and discover what's new and what's brewing in the City of Oaks.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Boone, North Carolina

Boone has stunning mountain scenery, hikes to waterfalls, and themed train rides.

Anyone who has spent time in the mountains of Western North Carolina knows there’s a palpable sense of magic in the region, particularly when the crisp air and colorful leaves make their annual appearance in the fall. The exact blend of allure and wonder, however, is slightly different wherever you go — from Brevard to Blowing Rock — and it’s apparent that residents and repeat visitors are deeply passionate about what makes their small town or city unique.

In Boone, otherwise known as the “Heart of the High Country,” the shared identity revolves around two things: the area’s natural beauty and Appalachian State University. “It’s a gorgeous place — the rivers, the waterfalls, the trails, and the mountains are spectacular,” says Karen Trafford, executive chef of the newly opened Canteen at Rhode’s Motor Lodge. “If you are an outdoorsy type, it’s great for hiking, walking, mountain climbing, and exploring nature.”

It’s this unparalleled access to the great outdoors, as well as a winning football team, that appeals to both App State students and alumni. “There’s a sense of pride in being a Mountaineer that continues on even after graduation,” says Scott McSherry, class of ‘09. And while collegiate nostalgia may be strong in this 18,000-person town, Boone doesn’t rest in the past. “[It’s] also consistently changing and improving, which invites alumni to visit and try new things while still enjoying the nostalgic qualities that remain,” says fine artist Lauren Crowe . McSherry echoes her statement, noting Boone’s rapid growth, but explaining how there are still “small mountain town vibes” to be found, “especially if you know all the secret spots.”

That said, we tapped a few locals and App State alumni to give us their best advice for planning a trip to Boone, including where to eat, stay, and explore.

• Book a room at Rhode’s Motor Lodge, a renovated mid-century motel that opened in October 2023. 
• Lace up your hiking boots or sneakers — Boone has numerous trails for all activity levels. 
• Browse the antique stores, art galleries, and boutiques on King Street in downtown Boone. 
• Indulge in a fresh pastry (or two) from Stick Boy Bread Co., and follow it up with a cold drink from Appalachian Mountain Brewery. 
• Plan your trip during the summer, fall, or winter, as there’s technically no bad time to visit Boone.

Rhode’s Motor Lodge

Rhode’s Motor Lodge serves as the perfect base camp for a weekend adventure in Boone. From Loden Hospitality — the team behind The Longleaf Hotel in Raleigh — the property is thoughtful and well-appointed, providing guests with a comfortable place to return after a day of hiking or exploring. Named after the rhododendrons that bloom in the mountains, it’s also home to Canteen, a restaurant that currently serves weekend brunch and dinner to both guests and visitors.

Horton Hotel

“The Horton Hotel is a great small boutique hotel in the heart of downtown,” says McSherry, noting the property also has a can’t-miss rooftop bar with incredible views of Boone. The building itself was once a Studebaker dealership, but today, it houses 15 uniquely decorated guest rooms (a few of which are dog-friendly). 

The Mast Farm Inn

If you want something a little more remote, consider The Mast Farm Inn , a historic homestead in nearby Valle Crucis. “It's got 19th-century cabins and a farmhouse. It also has an on-site restaurant,” says Trafford. Solo travelers or those traveling in a pair can opt for a room in the farmhouse, but some of the cabins can sleep up to six guests.

Explore Daniel Boone Park.

To be in the thick of Boone activity, head to Daniel Boone Park , a 36.5-acre space used for education, recreation, and historical purposes. “There’s Horn in the West … an outdoor drama about Daniel Boone; the Hickory Ridge History Museum , where they show you what life was like in the 1700s; the Watauga County Farmers’ Market on most Saturday mornings; the Daniel Boone Native Gardens , and more,” says Trafford. 

Float the New River. 

Cool off on a hot summer day by getting out on the New River with Wahoo’s Adventures . “Floating the river is such a fun way to spend a summer afternoon. The views from the river are beautiful as you’re slowly floating through the mountains,” says McSherry. There are also a variety of swimming holes in the area; Crab Orchard Falls Trail, for example, leads hikers to a waterfall with several spots where you can take a refreshing dip. 

Bring the whole family to Tweetsie Railroad.

Trafford describes Tweetsie Railroad as a “rite of passage” in Boone. “It’s been here since 1957 and is considered to be North Carolina’s first theme park,” she says. “They have themed train rides, including a ghost train during October for Halloween and a Christmas-themed ride , a chairlift, and an observation deck that offers great views of the mountains.” It might be touristy, but Trafford says Tweetsie Railroad is “an institution.”

Go for a hike in the mountains. 

You can’t come to Boone without exploring the mountains on foot. “You have to get outdoors and hike. Explore the parkway and all the native plants unique to the High Country,” says McSherry. Crowe suggests starting with Moses H. Cone Memorial Park in nearby Blowing Rock: “There's so much amazing scenery along the trails.” McSherry also adds that there’s a “fire tower you can hike to and climb for 360-degree views of Boone and Blowing Rock.”

Grab a drink at a local brewery. 

Once you’ve completed your hike, it’s time to reward yourself with a locally brewed craft beer and above-average bar food. You have a few options in Boone, including Appalachian Mountain Brewery , Lost Province Brewing Co. , and Booneshine Brewing Co .

Marketplace at Curiosity

“The Marketplace at Curiosity is this huge consignment warehouse filled with antiques, vintage items, and off-beat handmade crafts,” explains Trafford. Pop in the Boone location (there’s also one in Banner Elk) for an afternoon of treasure hunting and endless browsing. She adds, “Over the years, I have found great holiday decor there.” 

Watauga County Farmers’ Market 

“The perfect Saturday includes an early morning at a great breakfast spot, followed by a visit to the Watauga County Farmers’ Market , where you'll find local produce, meats, artwork, food trucks, plants, and more,” says Crowe. The market is only open from April to November, though, and visitors can check the website for updated hours and current vendors . 

Mast General Store

Mast General Store is well-known throughout the South, with locations in Waynesville , Roanoke, and Greenville, among other destinations. The original, however, isn’t far from Boone. “Just outside Boone, the original location in Valle Crucis is an old-fashioned general store with candies, hardware, gifts, shoes, clothing, and a working post office. It has old-timey wood floors and a porch with rocking chairs,” explains Trafford. If you don’t feel like making the trip, you can also visit the downtown Boone storefront. 

Wildwood Community Market 

If you want to shop local or “grab picnic provisions before you head out on a hike,” McSherry suggests Wildwood Community Market . “[It’s] a great new addition to downtown. It’s a small grocery and market that also does sandwiches and coffee,” he says. Along with fresh produce and meats, you’ll find houseplants, sauces, home goods, supplements, and more.

Stick Boy Bread Co.

“I used to own and operate a wholesale and retail bakery and catering business in southwestern North Carolina, so baking is my true love — and that’s why I love Stick Boy Bread Co. ,” says Trafford. McSherry also says they have the “best breakfast and lunch.” He adds, “They bake everything in-house; the chicken biscuit is a must, or grab a fresh pastry and coffee to go for a hike.”

The Cardinal

The Cardinal also comes highly recommended by locals. “It offers classic American food, including lots of burgers showcasing wild game. There’s emu, bison, and even a rotating wild game burger,” says Trafford. The beverage menu is equally impressive; it features a rotating house slushie, regional beers on draft, and a number of expertly mixed cocktails. 

The High Country Greek

“This place might be a local secret,” says Crowe, who describes The High Country Greek as both  “satisfying and unique.” The menu has all the classics — Greek fries, moussaka, souvlaki, gyros, and more. “I'll take a gyro over a burger joint any day,” she adds.  

Cobo Sushi Bistro and Bar 

Who says you can’t get sushi in the mountains? “Chef Joseph Miller trained under sushi chefs in Colorado and then came home to Boone to open Cobo ,” says Trafford, who recommends “everything on their menu,” from the miso soup and seaweed salad to the “nigiri, sashimi, and every kind of sushi.”

Summer and fall tend to reign supreme as the best times to visit Boone, but winter refuses to be overlooked. “Summer is great because it stays cool in the mountains. In other areas of the state, people are stuck inside due to the heat, but in Boone, I try to soak up every second of sunshine before winter comes,” says Crowe. 

Trafford shares that fall is “great for festivals and Appalachian State football” — and leaf peeping, of course — but the colder months give way to “skiing and other winter sports.” Even if you’re not interested in adrenaline-pumping cold-weather activities, you can still experience Boone’s appeal this time of year. “There’s something special about the winter snows and beautiful sunsets through all the bare trees,” explains McSherry. “The blistering winter winds make it even more fun to hunker down next to a fire and enjoy a cocktail or warm drink.”

Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) in Blountville, Tennessee — which is served by Allegiant Air, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines — is the closest major airport to Boone, but you’ll need to rent a car and drive the remaining 68 miles. Other airport options include Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO), which are 95 and 108 miles from Boone, respectively.

Like most towns in Western North Carolina, Boone is a destination best experienced with a car, especially if you plan on exploring the surrounding mountains. If you’re staying downtown, however, you can plan to walk. “King Street in downtown Boone is totally walkable. There are a ton of trails all over the place,” says Trafford, referencing the Boone Greenway , a fully accessible trail system that runs from one end of Boone to the other.
