Baja California Peninsula is one of the most exciting Mexican States , so different from any other place in Mexico with a truly magical landscape you can’t take your eyes off.

Picture neverending roads among a red rocky desert dotted with green cacti among red boulders rolling into the intense blue of the ocean.

Driving around Baja California is one of the most incredible experiences in Mexico.

I have done that twice, and in both cases, after exploring all the things to do in La Paz, I rented a car and set off on a road trip to Baja California Sur .

➢ Do I need travel insurance in Mexico? Yes, you do! I can never stress enough what a lifesaver it can be in unexpected situations. Although I hope I never need it, it gives me peace of mind to know that whatever happens, I am covered. I have been using   Safety Wing , and I find it quite fair, covering a lot for its pricing level. Where is La Paz Mexico?

La Paz mural turttle

Overlooking the Gulf of California , La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur state, which is located in northwestern Mexico, with the Pacific Ocean to its right and the Sea of Cortez to the left.

The city is on the southern coast of Baja California Sur.

For a wanderlust like me, that basically means dramatic landscapes, white sand beaches, tons of natural habitations, fascinating remnants of the Colonial era, and much more.

La Paz Mexico is usually seen as a port city for tourists going to Los Cabos , but you shouldn’t make the same mistake.

When I’m done telling you the top 25 things to do in La Paz, you will be surprised it has so much to offer.

So get a coffee, sit back, and read on 🙂

Top 25 Things to Do in La Paz, Mexico

1. go swimming with whale sharks.

The absolute must-do when you visit La Paz Mexico is swimming with whale sharks .

It is, in fact, a very popular tourist activity in La Paz because seeing these incredible creatures from so close is a unique magical experience that everybody should have at least once in their life.

Despite their size, these giants of the sea are extremely gentle and friendly, and seeing them for the first time is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Whale Shark swimming in the sea

La Paz is definitely one of the best places to swim with whale sharks.

You can find many tour operators here who will take you across the Sea of Cortez on a Panga boat and find you the perfect place to swim with whale sharks.

They also provide you with the gear for it, so all you need to do is absorb the experience, although it would be much better if you have your own snorkel.

INSIDER TIP : Make sure you ask for a wetsuit when you book your trip if you tend to get cold because it will be at that time of the year.

Mind though, swimming with whale sharks is available between December through April every year when these majestic creatures come near La Paz’s bay to feed with plankton and krill.

► Book your tour in advance to secure your space on your preferred day.

2. Visit the Stunning Beaches of La Paz

The city of La Paz is home to tons of beautiful beaches , so a trip here would be remiss without at least a few visits to some of them. It’s definitely one of the top things to do, so I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list.

There are many beaches ideal for swimming, spending a day chilling on the white sand, and enjoying watersport activities.

Since La Paz is more of a commercial port, the beaches closer to the town are not really so good for swimming, even though you will enjoy a nice walk on the Malecon (the promenade on the beach).

Playa Balandra view

But if you want to go there for swimming/water sports, you should drive a little further to Playa Caimancito or Playa las Conchas , the best beaches close to town.

However, if you want to see one of the best beaches in Mexico , you must drive all the way to Playa Balandra (or take the bus) and enjoy a full day at this spectacular beach .

You can kayak , paddleboard , or relax and enjoy the spectacular views .

Read my post on the best beaches in La Paz Mexico for more details.

3. Go Hiking in the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains

Baja California is renowned for its travel and adventure opportunities, and one of the top things on the list is the hiking experience of the region.

With so many amazing trails to choose from, it’s a favorite hiking place for many.

I’d recommend the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains if you’re looking for a fun hike while staying in La Paz.

SIERRA DE LA LAGUNA

Nestled in the southern desert region, the area is filled with hot springs, secret lakes, palm trees, waterfalls, and river canyons.

So, if you have ever imagined what it feels like to find an oasis in the desert , you will get to experience it firsthand here.

4. Swim with Sea Lions at Isla Espiritu Santo

Another of the most exciting La Paz things to do is join a boat tour to Espiritu Santo.

The Espiritu Santo island is one of the most gorgeous natural habitats in the Sea of Cortez near La Paz Mexico.

Since it’s a UNESCO-declared biosphere reserve , there’s no development and wildlife truly thrive on this beautiful island.

Among the rich marine life found here, the sea lions are one of the most attractive aspects of the island.

Sea Lions on some rocks

A boat ride to Espiritu Santo Island takes about an hour, but when you get there you will be rewarded with a swim with the friendly sea lions.

Plus, the amazing volcanic rock formations and the landscape of the island and its surrounding region are a sight to see!

Usually, tours to Isla Espiritu Santo include a stop at a nearby island after swimming with the sea lions, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and swim in the chill waters.

You can do this activity all year round, except for June through August, when it’s the mating season, and the sea lions need to be left alone while doing their business :).

But keep in mind that in the winter season from December through March, the water is very cold. So make sure you wear a wetsuit if you can’t bear cold water.

► Book your tour in advance to Espiritu Santo Island.

5. Visit the Museo de la Ballena (Whale Museum)

Yup, you heard it right. Whales are one of the most popular things in La Paz Mexico, so much so that the city has a museum dedicated to them!

The Whale Museum of La Paz is definitely a bucket list-worthy item for every nature lover visiting the city.

Here, you will get to know a lot about the behavior of whales, their habitat, all the history of the various species of the world’s largest fish like gray whales , humpback whales , and blue whales , and also about dolphins , manta rays , and sea turtles .

But that’s not just it, and things get even more interesting. You also get to learn things like their relationship with the local community of La Paz.

Just make sure to go there between Monday and Saturday from 9 to 14, because the museum remains closed on Mondays .

6. Go on a Whale Watching Trip

Although you may need to drive a little far, all the way to Lopez Mateo, whale watching is one of the most incredible activities to do in Baja California .

Grey , blue , humpback whales travel all the way to the Baja California coast to find food, give birth, and mate as they find here the perfect environment for their activity.

Mind that whale watching season is from January through April.

whale watching lopez mateo

When I lived in La Paz I went on a whale-watching tour uncountable times.

The closest place to La Paz to see the whales is Alfonso Lopez Matteo, where you can see the gray whales, the friendliest ones, that will come by your boat and let you pet them. A magical experience indeed.

If you manage to get all the way to Loreto you can see the blue whales, the biggest animal alive on earth. They nest in one of the bays near Loreto in the Sea of Cortez, and there are tours available that you can book directly with local travel agents.

However, to go to Loreto you should consider a 3-day trip .

But while you are there you will want to stay longer and see more! So you will end up extending your stay in Baja because you will simply fall in love!

And that’s the only danger when it comes to traveling to La Paz Mexico. The thing is the Sea of Cortez is magical, full of sea life and dramatic landscapes. You can’t get enough of it !

7. Kitesurf in La Ventana Bay

Beach at la ventana

Another great adventurous activity in the city is kitesurfing. If you’re up for an unforgettable experience, kitesurfing is a surefire way to get your hands on one. The best place to go kitesurfing during a trip to La Paz is definitely La Ventana Bay.

The small town of La Ventana is only a 1-hour drive from the city and is exclusively known for its kitesurfing experience.

With its perfect location to make the best use of air currents flowing between Caravlo Island and the bay, La Ventana has become a hub for kitesurfing.

The best time to go kitesurfing in La Ventana Bay is between November and March.

ROad to las ventanas

Many professionals come here during this time of year, so you can take lessons if you haven’t tried your hand at kitesurfing before, and you can also participate in the competitions that take place here.

Even if you don’t feel like kitesurfing , you can just rent a car and go on a short road trip . The trip itself makes it worth it, but once you are there you will also enjoy the tranquil laid-back life.

Have a walk on the beach watch the kite surfers floating above the water and have lunch in one of the cute local cafes.

8. Visit One of the Ranches and Go Horseback Riding

Visiting La Paz allows you to enjoy various outdoor activities, and horseback riding is one of them.

La Paz Mexico is universally praised for its breathtaking landscapes and scenery . One of the top ways to make the most of this is to go horseback riding through the region.

You will find a few great ranches (ranchos) in La Paz that offer a guided tour of some of the best trail rides in La Paz.

Horseback riding on the beach is another top activity in La Paz , so you can try out that as well.

Luckily, it’s fairly easy to get going, because you don’t need to take any courses or have any certificates to go horseback riding here.

Just visit a ranch, and you’ll be good to go.

Or you can book your tour in advance .

9. Go Kayaking

The calm waters of the Sea of Cortez , are perfect for kayaking .

Whether it is just a couple of hours or a multiday tour you can enjoy incredible experiences paddling around the multiple islands including Espiritu Santo island swimming in hidden bays among sea lions and wealthy marine life.

And if you do it during the winter from December through April you will be able to paddle around whales and see them from a close distance.

You can find many local travel agents and kayak rental companies that will be happy to organize your kayaking tour.

10. Take Kayaking Day Trips from the Balandra Beach

Kayaking trips are a must-do in La Paz , so if your trip is a short one and you can’t manage to go anywhere else, you can still get your chance at going on a kayaking day tour while you are visiting Balandra Beach.

Because you just CANNOT miss Balandra , one of the top natural wonders in Mexico .

Kayak for rent in Playa Balandra

When you are in Balandra Beach you can rent a kayak to set out for an adventurous trip. You will find plenty of kayak rentals here. You can also join a kayaking tour.

The tours offered by many tour operators on Balandra Beach are some of the best experiences in La Paz, and I wouldn’t recommend skipping them.

11. Sandboard at the Dunes of El Mogote

When it comes to exploring the desert region around La Paz, sandboarding offers a great unique experience.

So, if you’re an adrenaline junkie seeking a new kind of adventure, this might just be for you.

El Mogote is one of the best places in Mexico to try sandboarding on the dunes.

You can take a tour here, and trust me when I say this: it’ll be an unforgettable tour because sandboarding down the massive sand dunes is a different experience entirely .

12. Try One of the Cute Cafes in La Paz

Although it may sound obvious, I really had to include it in the list of things to do in La Paz Mexico, simply because being a digital nomad and always in search of good coffee and good wifi , the first thing to do when I visit a place is hunting for a nice coffee shop .

And La Paz is certainly not short of those. Unfortunately, the WIFI is not so reliable, but the coffee is top-notch.

My favorite one is Doce Cuarenta, Starbucks style but with its own personality, great coffee, and delicious bakery, and a lovely internal garden.

The Wi-Fi is not so good, but if you are on vacation you don’t need it.

When you go back from a tour, or if you are looking for a breakfast place this is a great option.

13. Explore the Museums in La Paz

Although some of the most popular things that make La Paz an interesting Baja California Sur destination are natural wonders and outdoor activities, the coastal town itself has a special vibe and offers cultural attractions.

Among the places to visit make sure you swing by the Museum of Art and the Anthropology Museum , to learn more about Mexican culture and Baja California history

14. Check Out the Stunning Street Art

La Paz Mexico Murals

The street art of La Paz is just as much an essential part of the town as its cultural landmarks. Almost every street in the city features artworks created by local artists.

In fact, most of the art on the streets of La Paz is an effort to preserve the culture of the city and paint subjects that represent the city the most.

That’s the reason why you will see most of the colorful underwater world on a giant scale painted on the walls of La Paz Mexico, embellishing the otherwise grey buildings of the city center.

You can check out the street art in all of the streets, especially in the city center, the main market, and the parks.

Another great way to enjoy street art is by taking a walk along the Malecon.

You can also book a guided tour to La Paz street art where a local guide will share the deeper meaning and history of the various spectacular murals.

15. Watch the Spectacular Sunset from the Malecon (During the Day and Night)

The Malecon, which is the beach promenade , is quite a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to take long walks early morning and during sunset and exercise.

It has a special vibe and a place of enjoyment .

Sunset from the Pier on the Malecon

During the day, people walk, run, and bike along the Malecon. Yes, there is a cycling lane running beside the pedestrian side.

Come sunset time, it becomes the perfect spot to watch the colors of the setting sun illuminate the sky over the sea.

In La Paz, I have seen some of the most beautiful sunsets ever. It’s just magical.

16. Visit the La Paz Cathedral (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Paz)

La Paz Cathedral at night

Among the cultural landmarks of La Paz Mexico, you can visit the Catedral de Nuestra Senora, situated in the main plaza, also where the Art Museum is located.

The cathedral building dates back to 1861. Constructed by the Jesuit missionaries of the time, it’s an imposing structure and worth seeing.

The Cathedral is just as interesting on the inside as well. Besides the architectural beauty , you can also check out many religious performances and live music that take place here.

Catedral de Nuestra Senora is the first thing that catches your attention when you arrive at the square, so finding it isn’t very hard either.

17. Try Out the Delicious Seafood

Visiting a commercial port town and not trying out its fresh seafood would be a golden chance missed. During your trip to La Paz, don’t forget to sample the exquisite seafood the city has to offer.

Chocolate clams are the most popular, so street vendors and local restaurants sell them alike.

I recommend trying out the clams, but La Paz has some of the best seafood restaurants in Baja California Sur, so feel free to try out as many dishes as you like. You won’t be disappointed.

18. Take a Trip to Flavor Town by Trying Out the Different Cuisines of La Paz

La Paz has lots of variety when it comes to the dining experience of the city.

From Italian to Argentinian, and of course traditional Mexican cuisine. You will find plenty of specialties in every part of La Paz, and many street vendors are pretty great, too.

Fish tacos are another highly recommended item from the La Paz cuisines, but don’t hold back on any other dishes either.

Fortunately, trying out the different eateries in La Paz doesn’t put a hole in your wallet, so you can hit as many places as you like.

Even vegans and vegetarians find so many different amazing dining options.

See below for some restaurant suggestions.

19. See the Sculptures of La Paz

La Paz sculpture on the Malecon

La Paz has so many awe-inspiring sculptures all around it that you can admire. It’s because many organizations work to bring more flair to the city’s traditional charm, and these sculptures play a big role in doing that.

You will encounter many of these sculptures going about the various parts of La Paz, but the most famous sculptures are located along Malecon.

There’s also a dedicated center for artworks called the Governor’s Palace , which is a historic building where you can visit exhibitions and see potters, glassmakers, and local artists displaying their talent.

20. Take a Tour to Another Popular Destination in Baja Peninsula

todos santos sunset on the beach

Even though you will love La Paz, there are many other pretty cities that you should visit while you are there.

So you can eithe r go in one day on your own , take an organized tour, or go for a couple of days and visit the pretty Mexican Pueblo Magico Todos Santos or the popular San Cabo Lucas .

Both cities also have many amazing day trip opportunities, which I will discuss in another post.

21. Experience the Nightlife

La Paz view from the Cathedral Hotel

La Paz doesn’t have many nightclubs, but that doesn’t mean the nightlife here is any less fun than Cabo San Lucas.

Instead of all-out parties, the nightlife in La Paz entails romantic live music and great dinners with views of the ocean.

You can also hit some of the bars and clubs on Malecon, where mariachi bands or modern music bring the night to life, and many locals are also found here to meet and chat with.

The nightlife of La Paz is something you wouldn’t want to miss out on, so make sure you try out some cocktails while you’re at it!

22. Explore the Old Town

La PAz Mexico Mural in Old town

The rest of La Paz is charming, but the Old Town holds a special place among its attractions in its own way.

The whole area is popular with locals, so you will meet families walking by and elders sitting on the numerous benches chatting.

The Old Town is located around Revolución de 1910 and Calle 5 de Mayo , making it incredibly convenient to take a short walk around the whole area on your own.

But you can also choose to go on a guided tour. Either way, it’s definitely worth exploring.

Besides finding all the city’s main landmarks, you can check out the coffee shops, bakeries, colorful markets, and interesting shops.

Sunset in La PAz

23. Go Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding, just like kayaking is one of the most popular water sports activities in La Paz. Local outdoor shops offer incredible experiences.

You can rent a paddleboard and go on your own, or you can join tours that take you to the most beautiful bays of the Sea of Cortez, including Isla Espiritu Santo.

24. Scuba Diving

If your priority is exploring the underwater world and you are a certified scuba diver, you should join a diving trip to Isla Espiritu Santo where your experience swimming with the sea lion will be much more amazing than if you were snorkeling.

Being completely immersed in the water for 45 minutes with those playful creatures, besides all the colorful sea life that populates the Sea of Cortez is an experience of a lifetime.

Things to Do in La Paz Mexico FAQ + Practical Tips

Is la paz mexico safe to travel to.

The word “La Paz” translates to peace . So I’d say yes, La Paz is definitely a safe destination for travelers if you stay in the central or the commercial areas.

The streets of La Paz are lit and active even at night, and the people are used to tourists being around almost all the time, so you won’t be attracting any special attention to yourself either.

However, it’s still important to look out for yourself just like you would anywhere else in the world and use the same precautions that I mentioned in my post on how to stay safe in Mexico .

Make sure never to leave your stuff unattended in public places, carry only the things you need, and leave the rest of your valuables back in your hotel room.

Also, don’t go to deserted areas at night. With just a few common-sense precautions like these, it will be less likely that you have any safety issues in La Paz.

What is There to Do in Downtown La Paz?

Downtown La Paz has so many charms of the city, including

The La Paz Cathedra l, one of the city’s most famous attractions, is also downtown.

Do You Need a Car in La Paz Mexico?

Road to Balandra

A car will come in handy in La Paz, but it’s not a necessity, depending on your lifestyle.

In fact, most of the attractions within La Paz are just a short walk away and taxis/buses also take you there, and for the beaches like Playa Balandra and Playa Tecolote that are a bit farther away, you can use public transport like cabs and buses.

Most people stroll around the city, especially along the Malecon and marina, so a car would only take away some of the fun from your trip.

But if you fancy a ride, another fun way to explore La Paz is by renting a bike or scooter.

However, if your goal is to explore the regions around La Paz, renting a car in La Paz Mexico would be a better option for it.

What are Some Things to Keep in Mind During Your Trip to La Paz Mexico?

The rule of thumb to visit La Paz is going crazy and having tons of fun doing the many things it has to offer.

Apart from that, there’s not much for you to worry about. However, some practical tips never hurt, so here are some of those:

  • First and foremost, staying hydrated is important. However your body might not respond well to the tap water of La Paz, so make sure to get bottled water or use a water filter to purify the water before drinking it.
  • Even though Baja California Sur is generally very safe, it’s still better to check out the Mexico safety guidelines issued by the travel advisory and practice common precautions like avoiding night driving and deserted areas.

La Paz views from the Malecon

  • To ensure your vacation in La Paz is fun-filled and memorable, make sure to pack well. The items you will need here include swimsuits and flip-flops for the beautiful beaches , running shoes if you plan on strolling a lot in the city and going hiking/exploring the desert region around the city, some sunscreen to protect your skin against La Paz sun, and a jacket if your bucket list includes romantic evenings and boat trips on the bay.
  • Exploring the surrounding regions of La Paz is definitely a must-do during your trip to the city. Almost all the roads in these regions are in great shape, so a car rental would be perfect for it. You can also go off the road, but make sure your car rental service is okay with that beforehand.
  • If you’re going to La Paz, take a flight to Los Cabos. Since Cabo San Lucas is a more popular destination on the Baja California Sur, you will find cheaper rates on flights going there, and getting to La Paz afterward is no issue at all.
  • Lastly, learn some common phrases in Spanish. Knowing a little bit of the native language will always come in handy, no matter which destination in Mexico you’re planning to hit.

The short answer is: depending on where you are. Although in general if you stick to the main roads and don’t drive at night you should probably be safe. In lesser tourist areas you should probably check the local news to stay up to date. Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is easy everywhere, even at night, although I would still avoid it. I recommend Discover Cars because the site offers the option to compare prices among different car rentals and you can add their own full coverage.

Although the tourist visa for US and European travelers used to be 6 months long which you could easily renew by leaving the country for a couple of days and going back, nowadays they have been stricter. what to do in la paz

There are so many things to do in La Paz, Mexico. Located in the Baja Peninsula 100 miles from Cabo San Lucas in the southern tip of Los Cabos, La Paz is a beach lovers’ playground. With non-stop flights from Los Angeles, La Paz is a great weekend getaway for those on the West Coast of Canada and the United States.

Not to be mistaken with the other La Paz in South America, La Paz, Mexico is the capital of Baja California Sur. It is located on the West Coast of Mexico in a sheltered bay of the Sea of Cortez (Also known as the Gulf of California) These are the very best things to do in La Paz.

Best Things To Do In La Paz, Mexico

There are only a handful of places that we’d consider living in this world, and La Paz, Mexico is one of them. By the time we had to fly home, we didn’t want to leave but never fear, we’ll be back. In the meantime, let’s check out all the reasons below we love La Paz, Mexico.

1. Sea Kayaking on the Sea of Cortez

things to do in la paz mexico

One of the best things to do in La Paz, Mexico is to go Sea Kayaking on the Sea of Cortez. You can do day trips or multi-day tours. We took an amazing 10-day excursion with Baja Outdoor Activities to San Jose Island and it was pristine.

The turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez were calm and crystal clear. We barely saw another soul during our expedition and had the most amazing time. It may have been a lot of work, but we also had a lot of fun.

There was also plenty of marine life encounters. Pods of dolphins swam by our group of 11 on a daily basis, we saw a whale, (and it isn’t even migration season) margaritas were flowing on the beach each evening and people spent their downtime snorkelling and hiking on the stunning coastline.

2. Kayaking Balandra Beach

If a 10-day kayaking trip isn’t on the agenda, Balandra Beach is a good spot to rent a kayak in La Paz. You can book day tours from La Paz to have a guided kayaking trip, or you can rent kayaks to explore its clear waters yourself.

It’s a lovely secluded cove tucked away from the open waters of the Sea of Cortez, so you don’t have to go far to have a great experience. You may also like: 15 Fun Facts About Mexico

3. Isla Espiritu Santo Island

things to do in la paz balandra beach espiritu santo

If you love marine life encounters, Swimming with sea lions  is one of the most uplifting things you will ever do in your life and you can do that in La Paz, Mexico! Isla Espiritu Santo is a UNESCO World Heritage list biosphere reserve.

We had the opportunity to swim with sea lions on several occasions and we never gave up the opportunity to jump in the water with them. One of the best things to do in La Paz is to see the sea lions.

You can take a boat tour on a panga (inflatable dinghies) to Espiritu Santo Island to see the sea lions less than one hour away.

Espiritu Santo Island has one of the most unspoiled ecosystems of the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur with white sand beaches, plenty of wildlife. Playa El Tecolote serves as a popular departure point for boat tours to Isla Espíritu Santo. Read more about Isla Espiritu Santo Island at An Unforgettable Adventure at Mexico’s Isla Espíritu Santo

Snorkel with Sea Lions

Visit the Los Islotes sea lion colony and see these playful creatures close up. You can also spy on sea turtles in Los Islotes . Los Islotes is a rocky outcrop that hosts a playful sea lion colony. Divers and snorkelers alike can interact with these curious creatures, making for memorable underwater encounters.

Swimming with sea lions is not allowed from June to August as it is mating season. You can book sea lion tours with GetYourGuide to Balandra Beach and Espiritu Santo Free cancellation with 24-hours notice.

4. Whale Watching in La Paz, Mexico

things to do in la paz mexico

By far, one of the most popular things to do in La Paz is to go whale watching. And La Paz has no shortage of whales migrating through the area. Each year whales make their annual migration through Baja California. What makes La Paz so special is that the whales stop to have their calves and nurse in shallow lagoons.

Whale watching season is usually from January through April as whales migrate through the area. Sightings are almost guaranteed and many times they come right up to the boat and swim alongside the boat. It is definitely one of the best things to do in La Paz.

Blue Whale season is from March to July, Humpback whale season is February to June and Pilot whale season is October to February.

Suggested La Paz, Mexico Tours

Book a La Paz Whale watching tour with   Baja Outdoor Activities in La Paz .  They do day kayaking trips around the Baja Peninsula including multi day group and private excursions and kayak rentals. If you’re looking for the ultimate adventure in Mexico, They also offer Whale Watching, Yoga and SUP trips. Drop Ben an email  to see what they can do.

5. Swim with Whale Sharks in La Paz

animal encounters whale sharks in mexico

No trip to La Paz would be complete without swimming with whale sharks. Every year, whale sharks pass through to feed in the waters around La Paz from the beginning of October to the end of April. It is one of the best places in the world to see the world’s largest fish.

We swam with whale sharks in Cancun and it was one of the most magical experiences of our travels. La Paz isn’t as busy as Cancun, so we feel it would be a better place to swim with these gentle giants. Seeing a whale shark close up is magnificent. These gentle giants gracefully swim through the ocean effortlessly. It’s hard work keeping up to them, but it is an experience you will never forget. Book a La Paz whale shark excursion with Get Your Guide. 24-hour free cancellation and last minute bookings.

6. Go to the Beach

things to do in la paz mexico

Just 15 minutes out of La Paz, you’ll find some of the best beaches in Baja California Sur. Many of the beaches are just north of La Paz. It’s no wonder we saw so many condos developing out of town. Baja City itself doesn’t have a beach downtown but it’s not far out of the city centre that you’ll find yourself in some beautiful stretches of sand.

There are many beaches around La Paz that are easy to visit:

  • Balandra Beach
  • Playa el Tesoro
  • Pichilingue Beach
  • Ensenada Grande

You can reach the beaches of La Paz by bus, motorbike or renting a car.

7. Go Off-Roading

things to do in la paz mexico

Off-roading is huge here. So huge, that the Baja 1000 finishes in La Paz every other year. The nearby desert terrain is the perfect setting for off-road fun. With little civilization along the tracks, a person has hundreds of miles to fun to explore.

We had a taste of the off-roading experience during our drive to our launching off point for our kayaking trip to San Jose Island, and we can attest, it is some of the best off-roading we’ve seen outside of Mongolia.

8. Sandboarding the Sand Dunes

If the desert if your cup of tea, try a turn at sandboarding at El Mogote. It’s a ton of fun zipping down giant sand dunes on a sandboard. Trust me, it’s different than snowboarding, but it is worth giving it a go if you are an adrenaline seeker.

If you have trouble getting the hang of it, just lay on the board and use it as a toboggan. You can book sandboarding tours through Baja Desconocida.

9. Go Sailing

things to do in la paz mexico sailing

Sailing is a major activity in La Paz and when in Baja California, how can you not take a sailing trip on the Sea of Cortez? Book a sunset boat trip to look for wildlife and view the coast.

There is nothing better than sailing on the sea and the spectacular coastline of Baja California will take your breath away. Not to mention the spectacular sunsets.

10. Stroll Along the Malecón

things to do in la paz mexico resorts

Stretching 5.5 km (3.5 miles) from Hotel Marina – the hotel where we stayed in La Paz, there is a beautiful waterfront promenade known as the Malecón. There is nothing more romantic than taking a stroll around La Paz hand in hand with your honey admiring the street art.

Evenings are the best time to visit as the entire town of La Paz seems to come out to enjoy the cooler evenings. People bike, run and walk along the waterfront, stopping in restaurants for dinner or drinks and live bands play late into the night. It’s magical.

11. Paddleboarding – SUP

things to do in la paz mexico paddle boarding

If any of you have been following for a while, you’ll know that Dave and I love paddleboarding and the Calm Waters of the Sea of Cortez are a good place to give it a try.

In La Paz, you can rent paddleboards and paddle along the shore. Or you can book paddleboarding trips and excursions with Baja Outdoor Activities located in La Paz.

If we could carry a paddleboard with us, we’d do it everywhere. I think that if we lived in La Paz, we would use our paddleboards for our commute. If we ever needed to go into town from our waterfront condo (I’m dreaming now) we’d just hop on our boards and paddle in.

12. Shopping in La Paz

things to do in la paz mexico marets

La Paz is filled with jewelry makers and artists and there is a local co-op for artists, a walking street filled with street art and artists and various art shops throughout the town.

One of my favorite parts of visiting Mexico is to buy handmade necklaces and this trip was no different. We bought chains from street vendors and had them change them in front of our eyes to suit our taste.

13. Cathedral of La Paz (Catedral de Nuestra Senora de La Paz)

what to do in La paz

Catedral de Nuestra Senora de La Paz is a lovely Catholic church located in the center of La Paz. It was founded by Jesuit Missionaries in the 18th century and the church was built in the 19th century. It stands where the original mission stood.

Visitors are welcome and can view Baroque religious symbols and enter for free!

14. Street Art of La Paz

things to do in la paz mexico street art

The Malecon is filled with art and sculptures created by local artists. A lot of the art was also donated to help preserve the cultural heritage of La Paz.

Be sure to stroll along the Malecon, in the urban parks, the waterfront pier and into the city square. There are sculptures everywhere. You can read more about the sculptures of La Paz at Tenaja Holdings , a company that donated many of the pieces.

16. Explore the Marina

things to do in la paz mexico at night

We stayed at the Marina Cortez located just a short walk out of downtown La Paz.

Marvel at the yachts parked at the marina and enjoy a stroll along the pier before settling in at one of the restaurants for a candlelit dinner at sunset.

Museums in La Paz

things to do in la paz mexico museums

16. Whale Museum (Museo De La Ballena)

The Museo de la Ballena, or Whale Museum, is dedicated to promoting the understanding and conservation of whales and their marine environment. La Paz, being situated near the waters where gray and humpback whales often migrate, is an ideal location for such an institution.

The museum is devoted to educating visitors about the various species of whales, their life cycles, migration patterns, and the threats they face. Through a variety of exhibits, the museum sheds light on the evolution of these majestic marine mammals, their anatomy, and their vital role in marine ecosystems.

Beyond just education, the Museo de la Ballena is involved in various conservation initiatives. They often host workshops, lectures, and other events to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation.

The Whale Museum of La Paz gives you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about whales. From their behavior and habitat to the evolution of whales and its impact on the local community.

Museo De La Ballena

17. Mining History Museum

A new museum that opened in 2018 located in the mountains of La Paz. Museo Ruta de Plata (The Silver Route Museum), traces the history of the area from the early settlers of the 1500s to the silver mining heritage from the 1750 – 1930.

Two more museums are in the works too! The Cowboy Museum and the Natural History Museum.

18. Playa el Tecolote

what to do in la paz

Playa El Tecolote is one of La Paz’s most renowned beach destinations, offering both tranquility and adventure to those who venture its way. Located just a short drive from the city of La Paz in Baja California Sur, it provides a refreshing escape from urban life and a chance to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the Baja peninsula.:

Playa El Tecolote boasts long stretches of sandy shores that are perfect for sunbathing and leisurely walks. The crystal-clear waters and gentle waves make it a haven for swimmers and families.

The calm and clear waters are ideal for various water sports, including kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling. The marine life is vibrant, giving snorkelers and divers a treat as they explore the underwater world.

19. Take a Kite Surfing Lesson in La Ventana Bay

La Ventana Bay, has rapidly earned a reputation as one of North America’s premier destinations for kite surfing. Its consistent winds, scenic beauty, and warm waters create a near-perfect environment for both beginners and seasoned kite surfers. Here’s a closer look at the kite surfing experience in La Ventana Bay:

Between November and April, La Ventana experiences steady northern winds, known as “El Norte,” which are ideal for kite surfing. These winds result from a temperature difference between the cold air from the north and the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.

The bay’s steady winds and the lack of major obstacles make it a favorable spot for beginners but experienced kite surfers, La Ventana Bay offers challenging conditions further out in the sea, with bigger waves and stronger winds to test their skills.

20. Go Scuba Diving in the Sea of Cortez

Often referred to as the “Aquarium of the World”, the Sea of Cortez is home to a vast array of marine life. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, the Sea of Cortez offers sites that cater to all skill levels.

The region has seen increased efforts in marine conservation, ensuring that its underwater treasures are preserved for future generations. As a result, divers often encounter thriving marine ecosystems. The underwater topography is diverse, with dive sites ranging from rocky reefs and sandy bottoms to underwater mountains and old shipwrecks.

21. Try the Chocolate Clams

La Paz is located on the sea, so it is no surprise that the seafood is fresh. One of the local delicacies is chocolate clams. The name “chocolate clam” doesn’t come from their taste but rather their appearance. The shell of this clam is a rich brown color, reminiscent of chocolate.

Chocolate clams, scientifically known as Megapitaria squalida , are one of the gastronomic treasures of Baja California Sur, especially in the La Paz region. These bivalves have become synonymous with the culinary traditions of the area. Chocolate clams are among the largest bivalve mollusks on the Pacific coast, sometimes reaching up to 6 inches in diameter. Their size combined with their delectable flavor makes them a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

22. End With a La Paz Sunset

things to do in la paz

Find yourself a beach, a sunset patio or just a place on the Malecon and enjoy the sunset. Nothing compares to the many sunsets we watched while visiting La Paz.

Being located on the west coast of Mexico, we had one extraordinary sunset view after another.

23. Where Eat in La Paz

things to do in la paz mexico where to eat

Make sure you head out at night for some cocktails and nightlife. There are many great restaurants all over La Paz, ranging from small fish taco stands to fine dining.

Our favourite meal out was at  Jonathan Roldon’s Tailhunter  where we enjoyed coconut shrimp, fish tacos, fresh salsa, guacamole and the best margaritas we’ve had in years. It has been a staple in La Paz for 18 years and he also runs fishing charters out to the Sea of Cortez. It’s a place where we instantly felt welcomed and at home. Yet another reason why we think we could live in La Paz..

Hop on to discover the waterfront and stop in town for ice cream to cool off.

La Paz seems great, can not waite to check it out! Thanks for sharing all your tips!

Looking forward to heading back to Baja in February! Haven’t been since I did my first Yoga Teacher Training there in 2007. This La Paz post is perfect timing since we’ll be doing a 1 week road trip through Baja Sur!

full name of the city was originally Nuestra Señora de La Paz (meaning Our Lady of Peace) in commemoration of the restoration of peace following the insurrection of Gonzalo Pizarro and fellow conquistadors against the first viceroy of Peru. La Paz is fast becoming a must-visit destination on the South American gringo trail, partly due to its convenient location between many of Bolivia and Peru’s greatest sites. The city was later moved to its present location in the valley of Chuquiago Marka.

Swimming with shark whales will be a lifetime experience i guess, i would do that despite the fact that i can’t swim

paddle boarding is not hard if you are relatively fit and have decent balance. The only time it becomes challenging is in ocean waves…its quite easy to fall off if its wavy. It’s also really simple to climb back on. on flat water its a cinch!

I paddle board up north in BC, Canada so falling into the water in Mexico would be pretty warm.

Definitely thinking about coming to La Paz! Met a cool friend at my new job. She’s been to La Paz and tells me it’s fantastic! I really want to go! I think I can make it happen one day too. Look for me, the girl with the big pretty hazel eyes!

I am interested in swimming with the Sea Lions. Have there been may issues with the animals biting people?

We haven’t heard of any. If you respect the environment and let them come to you, you’ll be fine. they are playful creatures, but don’t chase them or try to touch them. Just let them circle are you.

Hi Dave and Deb, My name is Toni and I’m with Dwellable. I was looking for blogs about the Baja of Mexico to share on our site and I came across your great post…If you’re open to it I would love to feature your story, please shoot me an email at toni(at)dwellable(dot)com. Hope to hear from you soon! -Toni F.

Thanks Toni, we’ll send you an email. We love Baja!

Hi Deb&Dave! I love your blog on La Paz. Gary & I have lived there for about 5 yrs now. Gary more so as he is retired, I’m still working. We visited Cabo a few years ago and we loved the area so much we built a house in the hills off Tecelote Beach north of La Paz, Maravia Country Club Estates. Stop by Palapa Azul next time you are in La Paz, Gary is there everyday after 2, November to April. I found the best time to travel there is Oct-Nov or Mar-April. Summer is way to hot. Happy Trails to you!!!

LOVE IT!!! I’ve been to Loreto twice, and I m thinking La Paz this year. Whats the best time of year do you think? Loreto- August was way too hot- December was way too cold! I preferred August over December…thoughts? Great post!

We were there in April and it was starting to get by. I’d choose Feb/March

Awesome!! Thanks so much To Deb and Dave – it our was our GREAT pleasure to host your visit and we look forward to helping all your fans discover this amazing corner of the planet.

Many thanks Team BOA

Blue sky, blue sea, the place is a paradise! I love to see La Paz Mexico!

Glad that there’s so much to see in La Paz. Hope to be there one week from now!

Just wondering re: a few things. You said that La Paz doesn’t have a beach downtown, but that you can reach some great ones by bus, etc. (15 minutes away). I’d love to spend a few days in the town of La Paz and to visit the local beaches during the day, but also want a few nights right on the beach itself. Is there a really nice one (lovely and not too crowded) that you highly recommend?

As for paddle boarding…I’ve never tried it, but might when I’m there. Looks like fun! 🙂

Great Article Deb and Dave, I am always surprised at how few people have heard of this amazing city. Having lived here for 2 years now, and visited for 8, it is somewhere I am so glad that I found!

There are actually a few smaller beaches along the Malecon in La Paz, but as they are by the road they aren’t as tranquil as the beaches 10 to 15 minutes away by car.

There is however a beautiful little condominium and hotel on the beach 5 minutes out from town which unless you are staying there you might not think of going to because there isn’t much parking unless you are a guest.

It is called La Concha, and the condominiums are very reasonably priced especially for being right on the beach. We rent quite a few there and 60% of our guests come back every single year they love it so much.

Drop me an email if you have any questions, and I would be happy to help.

Thanks for the information Simon, we may even look you up too! We’ve been considering wintering in La Paz ourselves. I think it’s the perfect spot in Mexico.

You can’t go wrong in Mexico, in my opinion. It’s why I’ve been here for going on three years now; there’s just too much to love…culture, views, people, relaxed lifestyle….I’d say go for the condo!

We just went sea kayaking in Greece and loved it! Stand up paddle boarding is next on our list to try.

We haven’t spent much time in Mexico, but La Paz looks wonderful.

Stand up paddle boarding is so much fun. If we find ourselves on a beach for an extended period this winter, we’re going to buy a couple of boards and use it as our workout. It’s a great core workout.

I have been to Cancun and Playa, although awhile back. I have never been to the Baja area. Looks like I need to give it a shot.

You will have to give it a shot. We had always gone to the other side ourselves. CAncun, Maya, Cozumel Playa Del Carmen etc. It’s only in the past couple of years that we’ve ventured to the other coast of Mexico and we’ve been wondering why we didn’t do it earlier! Love it here.

Dream trip!! Love all of the activities (go Baja Outdoor Activities!). Even though I live in the hottest place ever, I am longing for a tropical trip…

Coincidentally, someone was JUST telling me about La Paz tonight. I had no idea about this destination until now. Can’t wait to check it out myself!

I came across this post while browsing the net. This is such a great post and experience .

I have never been to Mexico, but seeing how great the place is with your awesome photos, I might push through with my plan next year and that is to visit the place (crossing my fingers)! And I will specifically put this place in my list of “must see /go places”in Mexico. 🙂

I am actually involved in a website (createyourtravel.com) that is currently on its development process which will be focused mainly on giving information to Mexico travelers that will help them ease the planning. So I hope that when it is up and live , you’ll check it out and would love to share your experiences to our users.

Thanks Deb and Dave for sharing such an awesome post!

So glad we could entice you to go to Mexico. I’m curious how you can give advice to travelers to Mexico when you havent’ been there? Hopefully you’ll get there next year so that you can give them first hand information. It’s beautiful and make sure to add La Paz to your list 🙂

Wonderful list of things to do in La Paz for sure and they all look like great fun! I think I would enjoy the Sea Kayaking just for the beauty of that water alone…something I find hard to resist!

Can't wait to go. 🙂

I’ve heard lots of good things about stand up paddle boarding. However, I’ve read mixed reviews on it from being easy to hard. The waters look beautiful there so kayaking would be a lot of fun.

I see why you would live there. Beach alone is good enough I guess. It’s pristine for sure. Looks like there’s so much to do as well. Have fun guys!

By rental car [ edit ]

Many car rental agencies (for example, Alamo, Budget, National, Thrifty) have offices both at the airport and downtown. Daily car rental prices are relatively cheap, comparable to a one-way taxi ride from the airport to downtown. An important consideration is that car insurance is very expensive, with some agencies making policies compulsory. In addition, some agencies may put a hold on your credit card for up to half the value of the car, so make sure your card has enough credit.

Driving allows you to visit great beaches located away from town and to take day trips to nearby cities. It is possible to pick up the car at one location, for example at the airport, and drop it off at other location, for example downtown. This allows you to avoid paying a taxi to get to your hotel, plus gives you a convenient way to visit places that are not within walking distance from town.

Or if you prefer a more adventurous outing, Sea & Adventures / Mar Y Aventuras will take you for an eight day, seven nights expedition, kayaking from 8 to 20 miles per day. You’ll spend five nights camping and two in a hotel. The tours start and end in La Paz and include sea kayaking, snorkeling, nature walks, fishing, and more.

Stand Up Paddle Board Through the Mangroves

If a stand up paddleboard is more your favored way to get around, tour companies will transport you and the stand up paddleboards (SUP) by boat to paddleboard among the mangroves. Mangroves are trees and shrubs that have adapted to the saltwater environment. Take a half or full day excursion that includes paddle board lessons and a chance to explore the pristine coastal waters of Baja.

Spend a Night Glamping on Espiritu Santo Island

At Camp Cecil base camp on Espiritu Santo Island, you can try glamping in a luxury tent. The tents include niceties like comfortable beds, linens, and lanterns, located on the beach. The on-site chef cooks your meals at the Espiritu Xantus Café, plus there’s a daily happy hour, sun showers, and compost toilets. The island is about an hour boat ride north of La Paz and is home to varied marine life like parrot fish, turtles, sharks, and the occasional whale and dolphin sightings. Spend your days kayaking, exploring the volcanic rock formations, fishing, or just relaxing beachside or in your tent.

Hike Around El Triunfo

El Triunfo is La Paz’s historic mining town where gold and silver were once. At one time the largest town in Baja California Sur, when the mines closed in 1926, residents left to seek jobs elsewhere. It’s worth a visit to hike the old mining grounds. You’ll see brick ruins and old smokestacks, the largest of which, La Romana, is 35 meters tall (and rumored to have been designed by Gustav Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower). Follow the rock lined path to the lookout for a spectacular view of the town and the surrounding mountains.

Play a Round of Golf

Courtesy of Puerta Cortés Mar de Cortés

Enjoy year-round golfing with a view of the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop. There are a few courses to choose from that offer stunning views of the sea and mountains. The Puerta Cortés Golf Club is home to the only Gary Player Signature course in Mexico. When you’re not taking in the view, the course itself is challenging but fair and appeals to golfers of all levels.

Try Sandboarding

In addition to the bounty of water activities in La Paz, you’ll want to go inland for recreation, too. Take a board and “surf” one of area's sand dunes. Similar to snowboarding, sandboarding is an extreme sport that involves riding a sand dune while either standing, sitting, or lying on a board. El Mogote is a sand barrier peninsula located just 20 minutes from La Paz. The steep hills of fine sand offer the perfect opportunity to try sandboarding.

Snorkel with the Sea Lions

Jacques Cousteau coined the Sea of Cortez the “aquarium of the world.” One of the most biodiverse on earth, the Sea of Cortez is rich with marine life and home to approximately 900 fish species and 5,000 species of micro-invertebrates. Espiritu Santo island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a large year-round sea lion colony. Or visit Los Islotes, home to several hundred California sea lions. The sea lions are friendly to humans and you’ll get a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with these gentle creatures.

Enjoy Dock to Table Dining

Courtesy of Sea Side Bar Wine & Grill

Prepare to experience fresh fish, caught that day, when you take your bounty from sport fishing to Sea Side , a beach-side open seating restaurant with a spectacular view, or into town at La Casita. The chefs will prepare your seafood in a variety of ways creating unique dishes like yellowfin poke, sea bass with tequila sauce, or fried yellow snapper served with asparagus and potatoes. If you don’t feel like working on a fishing boat for your dinner, step inside one of the many seafood restaurants in town like Mariscos Los Laureles .

Catch Your Dinner Sport Fishing

If you love fresh seafood, there’s nothing more rewarding than reeling in your dinner. Spend the day sport fishing with Mosquito Fleet or Coras Tours . The guides are experienced fishermen and will show you a variety of methods, both surface and deep sea fishing, to help you catch a grouper, dorado (mahi mahi), marlin, tuna, or other succulent fish. They’ll filet and pack the fish for you to take to a local chef to prepare for dinner that evening. While fishing, you might see dolphins, manta ray, sea lions, turtles, and more, so have a waterproof camera ready.

Take a Day Trip to Todos Santos

Founded as a Mission in 1723, Todos Santos is a charming town with galleries and shops that’s also popular with the surfers. You’ll find pristine beaches and cobblestone streets in this historically significant town. In addition to artisan craft shops, there are also art galleries, gardens, churches, yoga retreats, and farm-to-table dining. Experience the food, culture, beaches, and surf breaks just a little less than a two hour drive from La Paz.

Watch the Sun Set on the Malecón

No matter the time of day, you’ll want to spend plenty of time on the malecón: La Paz’s waterfront boardwalk. Stroll the 20-block-long boardwalk, rent a bicycle, stop at the restaurants and shops along the boardwalk, grab an ice cream cone or sit on a bench to watch the fantastic sunset over the water. It’s a safe, well maintained area that is wheelchair accessible. The malecón showcases sculptures by Mexican artists, most with a maritime theme.

Where is La Paz, Baja California, Mexico?

The Baja California Peninsula, extending south from the U.S. state of California, is home to two states of Mexico: Baja California and Baja California Sur (referred to by locals as Baja Sur or BCS).  La Paz is the state capital of BCS and a quiet town with colonial roots.

It’s about two hours north by bus or car from Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, the two towns served by Los Cabos Airport (SJD). It’s also about an hour from Todos Santos , another Baja Sur town that belongs on your bucket list!

The Pacific Ocean is on the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula.  Its east coast is separated from mainland Mexico by the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Sea of California.  This sea has more than 900 islands, 244 of which have UNESCO World Heritage bio-reserve status.

How to Get to La Paz Baja Sur

To get to La Paz, catch a connecting flight to La Paz Airport (LAP) from Mexico City.  Or take an international flight to Los Cabos (SJD) two hours south. There are many bus departures throughout the day from Los Cabos to La Paz , or you can rent a car at the airport and drive.  Getting to La Paz is a scenic drive on the new toll road, Highway 19, with the Pacific Coast on one side and the Sierra de la Laguna mountains on the other.

If you decide on a road trip, check out my advice on renting a car and driving in Mexico , which I’ve done many times, including in Baja California Sur.

Downtown la paz.

The town of La Paz is separated from the sea by a wide boardwalk known as El Malecon.  Couples and families stroll along the Malecon in the afternoon and evening, enjoying the ocean view and pausing for photos with statues that dot the promenade. You’ll also see kids speed past on rollerblades and scooters, so keep an eye out!

The Malecon also follows the Paseo Alvaro Obregon (street), which is lined on the other side with shops, restaurants, and hotels.  I stayed along the Malecon when I visited, and liked being able to walk to dinner each night.

There is free parking along the Malecon or on its side streets, plus some hotels have parking lots.

La Paz has some of the best swimming beaches in Mexico with calm, clear waters.  The Malecon has a beachfront, but you’ll find the best beaches for swimming are a few minutes outside of town.  Within 10-45 minutes’ ride by bus or car you can reach several that have bars, restaurants, and lounge chairs for rent.

Playa Balandra | Balandra Beach | Best Beach in La Paz

About 18 miles (29 km) from La Paz, at the end of the paved road from La Paz, you’ll reach Playas Balandra and Tecolote.

Playa Balandra has been referred to as the most beautiful beach in Mexico.  Once slated for resort development, it was saved by local citizens and activist groups who wanted to preserve its unspoiled landscape.  Thanks to their efforts, it’s now a natural protected area.

You won’t find big waves at Playa Balandra.  Due to its protected location in a shallow lagoon, it’s perfect for beach walks, wading and playing in the sand.  You can walk and walk, and the water will never reach higher than your waist!

Balandra Beach is a great location to hike for a view overlooking the bay, especially at sunset.  There’s also a famous rock formation known as El Hongo (the mushroom).

Services are limited here because of Playa Balanda’s protected status. Bring cash and change for the eco toilets and snack truck, or bring a cooler for your day.

You can rent kayaks and other water sports equipment here and walk for what seems like miles along the beach.  There’s also several restaurants where you can have beers and seafood right on the beach.

Swimming with Whale Sharks in La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, Mexico might be the best place in the world to swim with whale sharks.  They migrate to the bay here from October to March, so excursions are just a short trip from shore. But most importantly, La Paz has made efforts to regulate tourism of this kind and make their animal encounters sustainable.

Whale sharks aren’t whales, but are rather the largest species of fish.  The “whale” part of their name refers to their massive size: when full grown, they can be 18-33 feet in length!

What to Expect on a Whale Shark Day Trip

In La Paz, the number of whale shark tour boats in the bay are limited. Monitor boats also check the operators to ensure their guests are interacting responsibly with the animals. There is a limit on the number of snorkelers permitted to observe any one animal (4), plus a guide must also be in the water. We all received instruction on the distance to keep from the sharks (at least 3m from the tail, and 2m from the side of the animal).

boat tour to swim with whale sharks in La Paz Mexico

I had thought that I would be scared of the sharks, but I jumped right in when it was my turn! Whale sharks are filter feeders, which means that they eat by straining food like plankton from the water. But still, their size was awe-inspiring, even though I knew they’re harmless.

Booking a Whale Shark Half Day Tour

Many half-day snorkeling excursions leave from the La Paz pier known as Muelle Fiscal.  You can find operators here offering tours each morning, but it’s better to book ahead of time with a reputable company.  I went with Red Travel Mexico and our guide Dani was a marine biologist, so she was able to provide a lot of information about research and conservation efforts in La Paz.

To book, contact Red Travel Mexico . Or for online booking with immediate confirmation, check out MeXplore , Tuna Tuna Tours , or La Paz VIP Tours .

Day Trip to Isla Espiritu Santo | Espiritu Santo Island | Best Things to Do in La Paz

Near La Paz is the protected UNESCO biosphere reserve named Isla Espiritu Santo. It’s technically an archipelago, and the northernmost island is home to a colony of sea lions!  The surrounding reefs are a great spot for snorkeling, and many tours here include a picnic lunch on a secluded beach.

I took an awesome day trip with Red Travel Mexico to Isla Espiritu Santo. When we arrived at the Las Islotes colony, some of the juvenile sea lions started bobbing up and down in the water near our boat to get a look at us. The tour operators don’t feed them, but the sea lions are so curious and playful that the females and juveniles get very interested when people visit!

Los Islotes Sea Lion Colony

What to Expect on an Isla Espiritu Santo Day Trip

You can watch the colony from the boat, or get in the water to snorkel and some of the juveniles will swim around to say hi. This is definitely a bucket-list experience.

A day trip to Isla Espiritu Santo is the #1 best thing to do when visiting La Paz. I had thought that I would love swimming with whale sharks more. But the sea lions were so playful, and the beautiful islands of Espiritu Santo were so pristine, that this was my favorite part of visiting Baja California Sur.

Day Trips From La Paz, Mexico

Visit isla espiritu santo island.

One of the most popular day trips to go on when in La Paz is taking a boat trip to Isla Espiritu Santo. Isla Espiritu Santo is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also a protected marine location. The crystal-clear water and flourishing marine life make Isla Espiritu Santo one of the most popular snorkeling destinations near La Paz. Famous ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau referred to Isla Espiritu Santo as “the world’s aquarium.”

Getting to Isla Espiritu Santo will require a boat ride. You can hire a private boat tour and split the cost with several people, or you can purchase an all-day tour excursion to the island. As you make your way to Isla Espiritu Santo, you will have amazing ocean views. You may also get a view of Isla Partida on your tour. Isla Partida is a portion of the island that is separated from Isla Espiritu Santo. Isla Partida is separated from Holy Spirit Island by a small section of water in between the two islands.

Typically on tours to Isla Espiritu Santo, you will get the chance to snorkel and see amazing sea life and coral reefs. You may also get the chance to snorkel with sea lions. If you do get to snorkel with sea lions, be careful, as they can get curious and bite, and males can be territorial. After snorkeling, you may be taken to one of the several beaches on Isla Espiritu Santo to have lunch and enjoy some time on the island.

Snorkel and Swim with Whale Sharks

One of the most popular tours to do when visiting La Paz is to swim with whale sharks. Whale sharks are considered to be the world’s largest fish in the ocean and not sharks. Despite their large size, whale sharks are considered to be gentle giants. They mainly feed on plankton in the region and are found near the surface of the ocean. Whale sharks spend lots of time near the surface of the ocean. This is why snorkel tour operators can find them in the ocean allowing you the opportunity to swim and snorkel with these gentle giants.

If you do want to go swimming or snorkeling with whale sharks, the best time to go is between October to April. When going on a tour to swim and snorkel with whale sharks, please listen to the tour providers. Whale sharks are considered an endangered species. We want to do what we can to protect them so they do not go extinct.

Go Snorkeling with Sea Lions

A unique thing to do in La Paz is to snorkel with sea lions. There are a few places to go snorkeling with sea lions. A couple of popular places to snorkel with sea lions are Isla Espiritu Santo and San Raphaelito. As you snorkel with sea lions, you will also snorkel around incredible coral reefs and see the amazing marine life in and around the reefs of the Sea of Cortes.

If you do go snorkeling with sea lions, remember you are snorkeling with them in the open ocean. These are wild animals that you will be swimming and snorkeling near. Sea lions tend to be curious animals and male sea lions can be territorial. The curious sea lions may get close to you and nip or bite. You will more than likely be reminded of their curious nature on your tour before getting in the water. It is best to try to keep your distance and view them from afar. If a sea lion bites you, you will want to seek medical attention as sea lions have bacteria in their mouth that could lead to infection.

It also happens to be a treasure trove of natural beauty, from the protected islands offshore to the pristine, undeveloped beaches that residents have tried to keep secret for so long.

Just off the coast of La Paz is one of the best reasons to visit Baja California Sur — Isla Espiritu Santo. This UNESCO World Heritage Site , and national park, is known for its staggering natural beauty and centuries of history.

The uninhabited, mountainous island is known for its spiny rock formations that jut out into the Sea of Cortez, creating coves of pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise-colored water, and undulating shrub-covered sand dunes. The island is a unique habitat for all types of wildlife, from sea turtles, rabbits, and blue-footed boobies to colonies of sea lions, and, when the season is right, whale sharks.

While on the island, visitors can take part in a variety of activities, like kayaking and hiking , stand up paddleboarding , snorkeling , or scuba diving . In fact, Espiritu Santo is surrounded by beautiful natural reefs and sunken boats, making it one of the best places for diving in Mexico .

The island does not have any facilities, but visitors can spend the night glamping with one of the island's certified operators. Sleeping out underneath the stars on an uninhabited island in the middle of the Sea of Cortez is one of those experiences you will remember for a lifetime.

La Paz's Malecon

One of the best features of downtown La Paz is its expansive Malecon, or boardwalk. A hub of life and activity, the Malecon is one of the city's most famous landmarks, tourist attractions, and beloved spots for residents.

Running along the shoreline and backed by a sparkling turquoise bay, the Malecon was built in the 1920s and was recently revitalized, making it even more beautiful and modern. Today the Malecon is lined with restaurants and cafés, as well as the Baja Club Hotel — a modern, chic hotel built out of the bones of a historic hacienda home.

The evening is the best time to stroll the Malecon, particularly at sunset, as the sunsets in La Paz are truly spectacular. Live music spills out onto the sidewalks, and the air gets a bit cooler, making it a wonderful time to be outside, watching the boats zipping in and out of the marina.

Along the Malecon are sculptures, a bike path, and shady places along the beach. With so many wonderful things to do throughout the day, it's no wonder the Malecon is one of the most popular places to visit during your time in La Paz.

Playa El Tecolote

Not far from Playa Balandra is another of Baja's gorgeous beaches . Playa Tecolote is often considered to be an even better beach by locals, because it has far fewer tourists than its more photographed neighbor. The crystalline waters off Playa Tecolote sparkle with shimmering turquoise, and the sand is idyllically soft and powdery.

The calm waters are perfect for snorkeling , swimming , or jet skiing , and the beach has thatched palapas for seeking shade from the strong Baja sun. You'll even find a restaurant here, which is perfect for a casual, fresh lunch.

La Paz Cathedral

La Paz Cathedral, otherwise known as Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, is a Catholic Church that sits just off the main square in La Paz. The church stands in the original location where the mission of the region was founded in the 18th century.

The church that is currently standing was built in the mid-1800s. It is a rather plain-looking facade of brick and stone, with a large wooden door and a lovely tree-ringed plaza out front. Inside, the church has more detail to it, with a Baroque altar, though it is still much more minimalist compared to other Catholic churches in Mexico.

Regional Museum of Anthropology and History

Take a step back in time to discover prehistoric Baja California Sur with a visit to the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History. The museum features a collection of fossils that takes visitors through the natural history of the Baja California Peninsula as far back as 60 million years.

The museum also features tools and other archaeological artifacts from the first inhabitants of the region, including inhabitants who used to live on Espiritu Santo. Some of these artifacts include crafts, stones with inscriptions, tools for pearl diving and mining, and weapons.

Marina Cortez

One of the best ways to experience La Paz is from the water. The sea has played such a vital role in the past of La Paz, and continues to be integral to daily life today. Plus, La Paz has such a beautiful natural vantage point overlooking what Jacques Cousteau called, "The Aquarium of the World."

The first stop to getting out on the water from La Paz is the Marina Cortez. Located off the Malecon, in a sheltered cove within the bay, the Marina Cortez has more than 50 slips, and some beautiful boats to marvel at.

But the marina is likely where you'll depart from if you are embarking on a sightseeing boat tour of Espiritu Santo, going on a fishing trip, or sailing to more remote beaches.

Murals in La Paz

La Paz is a city that explodes with color — and not just from the sparkling hues of blue that shift across the bay. Wandering the historic streets of downtown, it's difficult not to notice the splashes of vibrant color that leap off the walls in the form of spectacular murals.

The artists of La Paz have decorated their city with beautiful art, full of stories that tell the legends and histories of the land and people of La Paz. In fact, in 2017, the city hosted the Ciudad Mural project, which brought 26 artists to paint dozens of murals throughout the city center.

Visitors can take a guided tour of the murals, or download the StreetArt La Paz map for a self-guided tour. It's one of the most unique (and photogenic) ways to get an introduction to the city of La Paz.

Museo de Arte de Baja California Sur

Directly across from the cathedral in downtown La Paz is the Museo de Arte de Baja California Sur. The museum lives in a historic building that used to be the first government house for the capital of the state. It was rebuilt in 1981 and then in 2019 was expanded to become the new home for the museum of art.

The museum's first exhibition was called "Landscapes" and was made up of work from artists such as Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Rufino Tamayo, Carlos Merida, and others. Today it features a rotating series of exhibitions. Visitors also love the museum for its architecture, with a carved stone doorway, beautiful patio, grand staircase, and lovely fountain.

Snorkeling with sea lions at Lobera San Rafaelito

The waters of La Paz are teeming with adorable sea lions. In fact, one of the largest sea lion colonies in Mexico can be found off the shores of La Paz. On the way to Espiritu Santo, boats will pass by Lobera San Rafaelito , where you can find hundreds of sea lions and their pups basking and playing.

Swimming with sea lions is one of the most popular things to do in La Paz. Tour companies taking travelers out to Isla Espiritu Santo will often stop at Isla Partida, where guests can strap on a life vest and a snorkel, and hop in to swim near these gentle, playful animals.

Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, as well, because sometimes they ride alongside the boats and put on a show. Depending on the season, you may even spot a glimpse of the gorgeous, and massive, whale sharks.

But even if you don't feel like jumping in the water, you'll still have a wonderful front-row seat to view all the aquatic life that lives around Lobera San Rafaelito. Make sure to bring your camera!

Teatro Juarez

The historic Teatro Juarez dates back to 1910 and is located in the heart of downtown La Paz. When it opened, it operated for many years as both a theater and a cinema, but the building closed in the 1980s and was abandoned.

Later in 1997, the Baja California Sur Culture Board took over the building to restore it, bringing artists from both Baja, Mexico and abroad to fill its calendar of events with plays, dance, folklore, concerts, conferences, movies, courses, and more.

La Paz Mexico – The Complete Guide (All You Need To Know)

La Paz is one of the coolest yet most underrated beach towns in Mexico . It is located on the Baja California peninsula and it is also the capital of Baja California Sur. It is home to about 300,000 people so is quite a large town with everything you could need. Although Baja California has so much to offer it is still a little off the beaten track.

The region is perfect if you like to discover wildlife, such as whales, sting rays, sea lions, and dolphins. But also if you like to enjoy crystal clear blue water and long white beaches surrounded by forests of cacti. Welcome to the Mexican desert!

Plan Your Trip To La Paz Mexico

How to get to la paz.

They are multiple convenient ways to reach La Paz Mexico, by plane, bus, car or ferry. For instance, we once arrived from Mexico City at La Paz airport and once from Madrid at Los Cabos airport.

Map of La Paz Mexico

You can reach La Paz by overnight car ferry from Mazatlan which departs 3 times per week at 5 pm and arrives the next day at 5 am in La Paz. The trip takes 12h and you can choose between a cabin or seat starting at 1.500 pesos / 75 USD per person.

La Paz International Airport

You can fly to La Paz International airport from within or outside Mexico which is only a 20-30 minute cab drive from the city center. There is no public transport or bus line we know of to take.

Good to know is that you can’t take an Uber or Didi from La Paz airport, you have to take an official cab (300 pesos / 15 USD) for which you can buy a ticket in the arrival hall at the official taxi counter. It is possible and easy to take an Uber or Didi to the airport (200 pesos / 10 USD), just be aware that you might have to wait a bit if you want to take one early in the morning.

Additionally, it can be worth it to check out Los Cabo International Airport which is a 4h bus ride or 2h car ride away from La Paz. We found a direct flight from Madrid to Cabo with Iberojet starting at 400 euros one-way which was very convenient and cheap.

Los Cabos International Airport

From Los Cabos International Airport, which is close to San José del Cabo you can take a 40-minute bus ride to San José del Cabo (85 pesos / 5 USD) to catch the 3h Aguila bus (300 pesos / 15 USD) to La Paz. There is also a direct shuttle from Los Cabos International Airport to La Paz (59 USD p.p.) that will take about half of the time which you can book here online.

The other option is to rent a car which can be very convenient in Baja as public transport is not as convenient as in other parts of Mexico.

🚗 Book here: Rental car in La Paz, Mexico

What can cause a bit of confusion is that people are often only saying ‘Cabo’ which means either San José del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas. These are different towns and it is a 30-minute drive between them. The bus that goes from the airport to San José del Cabo also stops in Cabo San Lucas.

Map of Los Cabos Airport, San José Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas

San Jose Del Cabo is described as more laid back while Cabo San Lucas is often compared with Cancun which means a lot of hotels, resorts and it is more of a party destination. We watched travel videos from the region and were amazed by the beaches and cliff formations.

Therefore, it looks like it might be worth it to check out both Cabos but the higher prices, touristy vibe, and party reputation have pushed it further down on our travel list. When we go, we will link a travel guide with more details here for you!

Getting Around La Paz Mexico

In La Paz itself, it’s very easy to get around. If you are staying in the city center you can explore most things by foot, bike, bus, collectivos or Uber. While it can be convenient to explore more of Baja California we never had the need for getting a rental car.

Buses / Colectivos

You can catch inner city local buses or colectivos (10 pesos / 0.50 USD) to pretty much everywhere in town. But what makes it tricky is that there are no official bus stops, signs or schedules and as a result, it can be quite hard and time-consuming to find out which transport you have to take. The colectivos are old U.S. school buses that can be hot and crowded depending on the time of the day. So nearly all the time Uber or Didi is the better option.

Old U.S. school buses used as collectivos in La Paz Mexico

Uber / Didi / InDrive

If we didn’t know the bus route we used Uber or DiDi which is reliable, cheap and fast. A 15-minute ride is about 50 pesos / 2.5 USD. For going to Playa Tecolote or Playa Balandra we recommend the bus that leaves from the Malecon as it’s way cheaper, just as fast, and has a fixed schedule.

Just before we left La Paz heard about a new app called InDrive. The way it works is that you offer a price for a ride you want to take. If a driver agrees to your offer you have a ride. Could be interesting for rides you can’t easily get on Uber or DiDi.

Where To Stay In La Paz Mexico

There are plenty of hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs in town fitting different budgets. We recommend staying in the city center because it is the most beautiful and easy to explore close-by attractions such as the famous beaches we cover later in this travel guide.

Bed & Breakfast

We stayed 5 weeks at Baja B&B which is only a 5-minute walk from the Malecon, close to the main square and next to many restaurants, cafés and a bakery we will feature later on in this travel guide. Rooms including a kitchen start at 10.000 pesos / 500 USD per month in low season.

If you would like to have an alternative experience (and save on rent) we can recommend trying to get a pet sit via Trusted House Sitters .

On our second trip to La Paz, we looked after 3 cats for 2 months in a nice house in walking distance to the malecon and had an awesome experience.

What To Bring / Climate Of La Paz

In general La Paz is safe and great to visit all year round. However, things to consider are the high season which is the coolest months (November to April), and the low season which is the hottest months (May to October) as well as the wet season (July to December).

We ended up staying twice between August and October in La Paz which turned out to be very hot and sunny almost all the time. Both times we had one week of rain that flooded the streets and caused a few hours of power cuts. It is also low season, therefore fewer people are around and cheaper prices but you will miss out on the whale shark season (October to May).

tourism in la paz mexico

La Paz is in the desert and despite Mexico’s reputation, it can get surprisingly cool in the cooler months (November to April), especially at night and morning. Therefore, bring some long layers and a jacket but also all summer essentials.

During the hot months (May to October) you don’t need to worry about long layers at all – flip-flops, swimwear, a cap or hat, sunglasses, and sunblock will be your best friends.

If you are here during the wet season (July to December) it’s good to have mosquito repellent at hand. But you can buy it easily in any pharmacy and supermarket when needed.

Best Things To Do In La Paz Mexico

1. walk the malecon.

Strolling on the 5km long malecon , a waterfront walkway with a bicycle lane is one of the best things to do in La Paz Mexico. On one side you have the ocean, beaches, palm trees, and benches, on the other side lots of restaurants, shops, and bars. Every few meters are statues, related to La Paz, its’ history, and its wildlife that are cool to check out.

Rent A Board Or Bike

At Harkers you can rent paddle boards, kayaks, and different kinds of bikes. You will also see many people skateboarding, rollerblading, running, fishing or playing volleyball. If you are more into calisthenics there is a free workout area close to Harkers with bars under palm trees – Allan’s favorite gym to go to.

Watch Sunset

The Malecon really comes alive in the evening at sunset. We never got tired of seeing the sun drop into the ocean, listening to locals playing music, watching people work out or taking pictures with the statues. It’s the perfect time and place to enjoy Mexican life. Check out the Loco La Paz Ex-Pats facebook group for events or markets on the Malecon.

2. Hike Up Cerro De La Calavera

At the right far end of the Malecon are hills with some caves and cliff formations. It’s a nice and easy walk up (about 20 minutes) to Cerro de la Calavera , especially at sunset. To reach the spot you can walk the Malecon all the way down and when you are at the base of the hill you have to look out for a path leading up to the caves. There are multiple small paths you can take to walk up. Enjoy the view!

3. Explore The La Paz Mexico Downtown

The city center of La Paz is small and nice to walk through. You will find many restaurants, cafés and colorful street art. At the main square is a little park , with a typical Mexican bandstand (glorieta) in the middle and benches and shoe-cleaning stands around. There is also a La Paz sign in front of the church you can take a picture with.

Main square with Mexican band stand in the middle

Free Art Museum

Behind the art museum (free entry with modern and traditional art exhibitions) are street lamps that are lit up during the night. Therefore, I recommend checking out the center during the day but also at night. The square, church, and street art get lit up and create their own special atmosphere. You will also often see little food stands and musicians at the square around sunset.

Farmers Market

Every Tuesday and Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm is the La Paz Organic & Arts market with lots of organic produce, (vegan) bakery goods, crafts, and foods like hummus, tamales, and kombucha. We went there regularly to buy fresh greens.

Spanish Exchange

Close to the square is the Casa Cultural El Huevo , a cultural center with different events and a free Spanish-English language exchange every Tuesday at 7:30 pm. If that’s not for you you should still check out the street that they are in. There are lots of nice little restaurants and bars with outdoor seating and colorful street art that are nicely lit up at night.

Colorful bars and street art in La Paz

Secondhand Bookstore

If you are looking for new and secondhand English and Spanish books I recommend checking out Allende books . We were able to get a discount on their secondhand books when handing in books we had finished reading. They are closed in August and September.

4. Enjoy Food And Drinks

There are lots of food and drink options in La Paz Mexico. Since I eat plant-based and we love healthy local food that is affordably priced our recommendations will include a lot of healthy and fresh options you should not miss out on trying.

You should definitely have a drink at Harkers at the Malecon when you are in La Paz Mexico. It’s an awesome sunset spot, twice we saw dolphins jumping out of the water in the distance! While it’s great for drinks and watching the sunset we find the food a bit overpriced for what you get.

Harkers owns two buildings next to each other, both with a rooftop and colorful art on them. Both rooftops are connected with a rope which they use to move orders in a little wagon in between – fun to watch! On Thursday they usually have a live band playing.

At the bottom of the buildings are their own brewery and tour company. They offer tours of the region and all sorts of bikes, paddle boards, and kayaks. A great place to check out prices and activities.

Planeta Veggie

Seriously the best vegan burgers and wraps in town. I know the lovely owners Angie and Tyler from being a volunteer at their hostel in another Mexican beach town before they moved to La Paz and opened Planeta Veggie . They are the reason why Allan and I came to check out La Paz and Baja California twice so far.

Try the chickpea or green pea burger with a salad or french fries (140 pesos / 7 USD) or their falafel wrap (100 pesos / 5 USD). All of their burger patties are homemade and the ingredients are locally sourced which we really like. Don’t miss out on their sweets at the counter. Their homemade cookies (20 pesos / 1 USD) or snicker bar (35 pesos / 1.75 USD) are the best!

There is a little garden in the back to sit with a lot of shade, good wifi (digital nomads and laptops welcome) and a zero waste and bulk store in the front. Their 5-star reviews on facebook , google and happycow are supporting my slightly biased recommendation 😉

Burgers and fries at Planeta Veggie in La Paz city center

Close to the main square is Nomadas serving organic food with lots of vegetarian and vegan options and fresh juices. They have outside seating in the shade as well as inside with air conditioning. In their little shop, you can buy organic food products, cheese, eggs, and sweets.

My favorite dish is the buddha or Thai bowl with extra tofu (200 pesos / 10 USD) and Allan’s favorite is the omelet (130 pesos / 6.5 USD) with organic eggs and tortillas. They also have sourdough bread which costs extra.

They have good wifi and it’s no problem if you want to work there for a couple of hours. But the best place to work and have a cup of coffee is actually across the street at Doce Cuarenta.

Doce Cuarenta

Doce Cuarenta is a great place for having a coffee and working online. They offer all kinds of drinks – from cold brew coffee to chai to matcha latte (cold and hot) with various plant-based milk options, homemade (ice) teas, juices, and kombucha – and little snacks such as avocado on toast.

There is a nice terrace in the back and out front but the best wifi is inside if needed (about 150 Mbps). Allan and I spent hours there working online including video calls. In case of power cuts, they have a generator and therefore still wifi.

Matcha latte next to a laptop at Doce Cuarenta

Pan D’Les Bakery

Next to Doce Cuarenta is the Pan D’Les Bakery offering homemade bread and (vegan) sweets. It’s run by a lovely old man and friendly staff. It also has a nice little outside seating area. Come early as it closes at 2:30 pm and sells out fast. If you are from Austria like me don’t expect too much from the sourdough bread (masa madra), it’s fluffy and white here and not how we know it 😉

Sweet And Fit

We came across Sweet and Fit when walking on the malecon looking for something sweet. Besides a savory food menu, they serve gluten-free, keto-friendly or vegan cakes and donuts sweetened with monk fruit. Interesting!

We tried the Ferrero rocher and Snickers cake and were blown away, they tasted soo good. It’s made with tofu, nuts, dark chocolate, and chickpea flour. It’s on the pricy side (100 pesos / 5 USD per piece) but if you look for a guilt-free ocean-view dessert you should check it out!

Expendio Café Batalla S.A.

If you love fresh coffee and have access to a coffee machine you should check out Expendio Café Batalla S.A. They sell whole beans or grind them up freshly for you. It is a local favorite and you will regularly see locals lined out the door to pick up their coffee. Make sure you order your coffee without sugar (sin azucar). You can say how much you want, they sell 1 kg for 240 pesos / 12 USD.

Bulk Stores

I love refilling my bags with nuts, seeds, and other goods in bulk stores. It’s plastic-free, usually not more expensive, often high quality and organic and I can get small amounts which are handy for traveling.

La Paz has a lot of bulk stores. There is a whole block of typical Mexican ones around this market selling legumes, nuts, seeds, and spices. Bring your own bags to avoid getting plastic bags, compare prices, and check out for bugs in the hot season (May to October).

My favorite bulk stores are Albaaka and El Cantil which are close to each other. They are fancier and have so many great things besides the basics. You can bring your own bags or boxes (they deduct the weight) or pick up free jars and donate them when you are done.

5. Visit Playa Balandra

Visiting Playa Balandra is one of the best things to do in La Paz Mexico. It’s easy to reach from La Paz city center and feels like sitting in a crystal clear aquarium with cool desert hills and scenery around. It’s also a protected area so no construction is allowed making it feel a lot more untouched than a lot of beaches around Mexico. Some even say it is the most beautiful beach in Mexico.

Balandra Bay from above

How To Get To Playa Balandra From La Paz

A 40-minute bus ride (60 pesos / 3 USD one-way) takes you from La Paz city center to Playa Balandra . The bus leaves from 8 am to 6 pm every hour on the hour from the bus station at the Malecon and returns every hour from 10:40 am to 6:40 pm. You can buy a ticket only for the same day at the ticket counter at the bus station. There was always plenty of space on the bus, so we would buy the ticket 10 minutes before departure. For the ride back you can buy a ticket directly from the bus driver.

You can also come by car and park for free but it can be very busy as parking space is limited. The drive to Balandra itself is a highlight offering stunning ocean views alongside the Malecon and up the hills into a forest of cacti. It fascinated me every time we went.

Forest of cacti on the way to Playa Balandra

What To Expect

Good, to know is that there is no entrance fee, restaurants, toilets, sun beds or buildings. So better come prepared or go to Playa Tecolote afterward where there are plenty of restaurants and bathrooms. People do sell fruits, snacks, and some drinks out of little moving carts. Collect and take back your trash, this is not a commercial beach with amenities.

Come early to secure a spot under the free public wooden umbrellas or bring your own – there is otherwise no shade. Enjoy the crystal clear shallow water, fish, and relaxed atmosphere. You should also hike up the small hill next to the car park to see the famous mushroom rock formation and overlook the bay. It is stunning!

Walking to the Balandra Bay view point

6. Visit Playa Tecolote

While you should definitely check out Playa Balandra we actually like Playa Tecolote better. It’s a long white strip of beach surrounded by rocky hills and cacti. We couldn’t decide what is better, the ocean or the mountain view.

Restaurant and clear water at Playa Tecolote

How To Get There

To visit Playa Tecolote you can stay for 5 more minutes on the same bus that goes to Playa Balandra (60 pesos / 3 USD one-way from La Paz, a 40-minute ride) or come by car, there is plenty of space for parking.

If you are adventurous like us you can hike all the way from Balandra to Tecolote. It took us about 2.5h by following a path along the oceanfront. There is a detailed map of the hike here on All Trails. We got rewarded with lots of amazing views and discovered secluded beaches in between.

The Playa Tecolote bus next to a stand selling coconuts

In comparison to Playa Balandra, you have a lot more amenities such as restaurants, bathrooms, umbrellas, and sun beds for rent. You can decide to stay in the crowd or walk a bit further down the beach to be by yourself. There is no natural shade so it’s better to come prepared.

From the beach, you have a nice view of La Isla Espirutu Santo . The water is crystal clear and you will usually see a lot of fish. We even got lucky once and spotted dolphins in the distance and a sting ray jumping out of the water!

Man selling ice cream on the beach at Playa Tecolote and kayaks for rent

I recommend going to the left far end of the beach close to the rocks. There is only one restaurant and it feels like a bay surrounded by hills. This end of the beach is much quieter and more relaxed. The restaurant area by the main car park can get really crowded and loud, particularly on the weekends.

We rented kayaks (300 pesos / 15 USD for 1h) to go to Balandra. Although we gave our best to make it into Balandra and back on time, we realized it will take longer than 1h so we just saw the entrance to Playa Balandra from the distance. It was still great kayaking along the coast and we highly recommend it!

Kayaking through the crystal clear blue water of Playa Tecolote

7. Take A Tour To La Isla Espiritu Santo

This is the only thing from the list we have not done ourselves because we have been to La Paz twice not during the whale shark season. But if you are here at another time you should definitely check it out! From what we have seen and heard a trip to the island is an amazing experience and we will be back to do it one day.

La Isla Espiritu Santo is home to many sea lions, dolphins, whales, manta rays, and several bird species. Whale shark season is from October to May. You can snorkel with wild sea lions from September to May. October to May is also the best time for scuba diving. You have the chance to see whales, hammerhead sharks, and manta rays!

We have heard that the water can get very cold in winter, so be prepared. The water is warmest in the summer months but then you will miss out on the best wildlife spotting seasons. Bring biodegradable sunblock as you should always do while swimming in the ocean.

We saw tours offered to La Isla Espiritu Santo including snorkeling with whale sharks and sea lions at three different spots. With the tours, you get a guide, lunch, snorkel gear, and pick up and the tour lasts about 6 hours. Do make sure to know what’s included before you book as whale shark watching and a tour to the island can be combined in one tour or done separately.

Tour boat heading from La Paz to Isla Espiritu Santo

Isla Espiritu Santo Tours

You can book an Isla Espiritu Tour online for 120 USD. The tour includes pick up and drop off in La Paz, Snorkeling and lunch.

We also saw advertisements at Playa Tecolote for 1,100 pesos / 55 USD which is cheaper than going from La Paz (1,600 pesos / 80 USD) but then you have to go to Playa Tecolote by bus or car first and see what’s included.

8. Do A Day Trip To Todos Santos

Todos Santos is just a 2h bus ride from La Paz Mexico and a great place for a day trip. The town is located on top of a freshwater spring, so it is an oasis full of palm trees in the barren Baja Peninsula. Very unique!

Todos Santos used to be a sugar cane-producing town. But in recent years many artists and creative people have moved into town. Meaning that there are lots of galleries, great cafes, restaurants, and a pretty little historic center.

Todos Santos histoic city center decorated with flags

Although Todos Santos is close to the beach it is actually quite a long walk (30-40 minutes) from its city center. So if you don’t come by car be prepared to do a lot of walking. However, if you make it to the beach you will have it almost completely to yourself! We have been there twice and only seen three other people the whole time.

If you are planning to go make sure you are reading our top tips for Todos Santos here !

Now You Know Everything About La Paz Mexico

That brings us to the end of my top 8 things to do in La Paz Mexico! We have spent time in quite a few beach towns around Mexico and La Paz is definitely one of our favorites. Particularly if you want to work remotely, enjoy some wildlife, do some activities and enjoy Mexican life on crystal clear beaches.

Desert Drives and Sea Lion Dives: The Enduring Draws of La Paz, Mexico

New hotels and destination-worthy restaurants now complement the ever-appealing outdoors surrounding La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur.

For our last night in La Paz, Mexico, we kept it simple: A couple of cans of cold Pacifico, a bench on the malecón, the city’s waterfront promenade, and the sunset glowing orange over the shimmering silver-blue Sea of Cortez. My husband, Alex, and I had spent nearly a week taking scenic desert drives and lazy city strolls, visiting stunning beaches and mountains, and enjoying a steady diet of fish tacos and mezcalitas. But now we were salt-coated and sinking into a blissful exhaustion that comes only after a day spent scuba diving.

La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, the Mexican state where some 42 percent of the land and water are natural protected areas , and the city lies on the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, considered one of the world’s most diverse marine environments. Travelers have long been drawn to the region’s glorious outdoors, a distinctive mix of ocean and red-hued desert, to spend days not only diving, but also sailing, kayaking, fishing, kite surfing, mountain biking, camping and hiking.

In recent years, the city has maintained its strong commitment to environmental conservation, but has also welcomed new restaurants and accommodations, meeting a growing desire among many travelers to Mexico for authentic experiences found beyond the walls of an enormous resort.

“This is an adventure destination,” said Luz Maria Zepeda, the director of the city’s tourism board. “We want people who want to explore, who want to preserve the environment the way it is, and to help us protect it.”

A seaside city that has a broad walkway lined with trees along the waterfront.

Growth, but kept in check

Home to around 300,000 people, La Paz has a decidedly laid-back feel — “The Peace,” it’s aptly named — and is often overshadowed by Los Cabos , a municipality on the state’s southernmost tip that includes San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, as well as by tiny Todos Santos , a stylish destination for art and food on the Pacific Coast.

Indeed, while La Paz had a record-breaking 600,000 tourists in 2023, Los Cabos — through cruises and air alone — welcomes 3 million travelers annually .

La Paz’s comparatively modest number of visitors is, in part, a question of access: La Paz’s airport almost exclusively serves domestic destinations, with direct flights primarily from Mexico City and Guadalajara. Most international visitors opt to fly to the larger Los Cabos International Airport and take the two- to three-hour drive to La Paz.

The drive from the airport is its own worthwhile journey, with routes running along the Pacific Coast through Todos Santos and El Pescadero, home to Playa Los Cerritos , a popular surfing destination. A slightly longer, but epically beautiful, drive winds through the Sierra La Laguna mountain range.

La Paz is a walkable city with good roads and ample services. It does not have any large resorts, and there are no current plans to build any: This is not a destination with aspirations of imitating the all-inclusive, tourist-heavy spring break vibes long associated with Cabo. Instead of a waterfront dominated by restricted private access, La Paz has the malecón, which was renovated in 2020 and 2021. Last April, a proposal to build a large port for cruise ships was withdrawn after local pushback .

“We don’t want massive tourism,” said Ivan Félix, the manager of the tour and travel department of the La Paz tourism board. “The idea is not to grow in numbers, but in quality.”

That has translated to a bevy in smaller, higher-end hotel openings: Hotel Indigo , formerly the Costabaja Resort & Spa, was renovated and reopened by IHG in December and Republica Pagana , an adults-only boutique hotel with a rooftop bar and restaurant, welcomed its first guests in January. Grupo Habita opened the Baja Club Hotel in a former colonial villa in 2021 on the malecón. Hilton plans to complete a renovation of the historic La Perla Hotel , which first opened in 1940, by the end of this year.

That sophisticated growth can also be found in the city’s culinary scene, which continues to be dominated by the region’s fresh seafood, flour tortillas and ranch-driven fare like meat-filled molcajetes and snack-sized burritos. Fried fish tacos remain stalwarts, from street stands to casual eateries like Taco Fish La Paz (featured on the Netflix series “Taco Chronicles,”) and Toto Frito , where you can try sustainably farmed totoaba, a fish native to the Sea of Cortez. We feasted on a variety of chilaquiles at Maria California , a popular brunch spot, and inhaled spicy shrimp aguachile at a beach stand at Playa El Tecolote, just north of Balandra. At Los 32 Sabores , a memorable dinner of manta ray and tripe tacos on fresh tortillas and Caesar salads made tableside hinted at the city’s ambition to become a bona fide food and drink destination.

Gratitude Coffee Makers , a coffee bar a few blocks off the malecón, was opened by the husband-and-wife team Sergio Hernández and Gloria Olivera in 2022. The couple work closely with Mexican coffee farmers, ensuring both quality beans and fair labor practices, and host art exhibitions and events at their cafe. They have noticed a decided shift in the restaurant scene in recent years.

“It’s definitely developing. There are a lot of people from the mainland that are coming here and opening restaurants. You can find a lot more things to do,” said Mr. Hernández, who is from Mexico City.

Some of that diversity can be found nearby at Tiger Club , which serves Southeast Asian fare and natural wine. The restaurant is housed on the back patio of Casa Nopal , a showroom and shop specializing in handmade goods from Mexican artisans, both of which opened in 2022. Nearby, Sunrise/Sunset is a natural wine bar that opened in December. Nemi offers riffs on traditional dishes, which might include fresh fish served raw or topped with hoja santa butter, duck confit in flour tortillas or pork belly served with beans and nopales. The restaurant is the first solo project of Alejandro Villagomez, who in 2011 moved from Mexico City where he was chef de cuisine of Pujol .

“La Paz is a magical place,” Mr. Villagomez said. “We are surrounded by sea and desert, and we strive to find the best ingredients both inside and outside the city.”

White sand, cobalt waters

Still, for all of the new hotels and destination-worthy restaurants, the natural world remains La Paz’s main draw. Chrissy Cappellano, a certified master scuba diver trainer from Long Island, in New York, has been living in the city since 2018.

“You have to plan multiple trips to see everything,” she said of the area’s rich marine life. “There’s a time that’s good for whale sharks, for whales, for sea lions.”

I met Ms. Cappellano when she led our daylong dive trip with Carey Dive Center that included a surprise sighting of humpback whales and a swim with whale sharks , the wide-mouthed, filter-feeding fish that can grow up to 30 feet. The rest of the day was spent around the islands of Espírito Santo and Partida — the archipelago is part of an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a national park and a 45-minute ride from the city — diving around a protected sea lion colony called Los Islotes . The marine mammals didn’t hesitate to approach our group, performing flips and in some cases, biting onto flippers and dive hoses. Perhaps as spectacular were the schools of sardines, glinting silver in the sun as they whirled around us like confetti.

Care for the environment is a common talking point on dive trips I’ve been on elsewhere in Mexico and around the world; here, it was an actionable part of the agenda. Daily access to whale sharks, which migrate in order to feed in the waters right off the city , is limited to a small number of tour boats at set times. As we boarded our boat after our first dive at Los Islotes, someone spotted a sea lion pup who had been wounded by a fishing hook. Ms. Cappellano quickly sent photos and videos to Rescate de Lobos Marinos , an organization that helps monitor and treat sea lions. Carey also made a point to provide reusable water bottles for the day. (The state as a whole has been strictly limiting single-use plastics since 2018.)

It’s not hard to see how and why visitors fall in love with these cobalt waters, and why local residents are so protective of them. Espiritu Santo is a geological layer cake carved with countless small anchorages, beloved by sailors and fishing enthusiasts. But there’s also much to explore on land — the island is a popular destination for hiking and glamping, while Playa Balandra , famous for its white sand and shallow turquoise waters, is consistently named one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. An easy 20-minute drive from the city center, it is also a protected area, and limits the number of visitors allowed per day, with timed entries at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. La Ventana, a 40-minute drive, is a famous kite-surfing destination . There’s mountain biking, dune buggying, hiking and camping, too.

“You can pick a beach depending on the wind. There are waterfalls and hot springs. Every sunset here is usually amazing,” Ms. Cappellano said. “There’s just so much nature to be enjoyed.”
