Rick Springfield (born Richard Lewis Springthorpe on August 23, 1949) is an Australian pop singer-songwriter and actor, hailing from South Wentworthville, New South Wales, Australia.

With a tumultuous childhood spent in both Australia and England due to his father’s military stationing, Springfield’s musical history began in a number of local rock bands. The singer was invited to join the group Rockhouse in 1968, which changed its name to MPD Ltd, and later joined the pink satin clad group Zoot. A favourite among mainly young teens, Zoot became one of the most popular Australian groups until 1971 when the band broke up.

Springfield then went solo and earned his first major hit with “Speak to the Sky” however was followed by a period of stagnation, thus the singer turned his hand to acting. In 1981 Springfield was awarded the role of Dr. Noah Drake on the TV show General Hospital, catapulting him to stardom and paving the way for his debut album on RCA “Working Class Dog”. Featuring the singles “Jessie’s Girl” and “I’ve Done Everything for You” the album rocketed to chart success and earned the singer a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

The singer’s subsequent album “Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet” was released the year after in 1982 aided by the hit single “Don’t Talk to Strangers”. 1983’s “Living in Oz” repeated the tried-and-tested pop release again to much the same results, the album peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the Top 10 single “Affair of the Heart”.

Springfield made his big screen debut in the 1984 film “Hard to Hold”, which the singer wrote much of the soundtrack for, and which resulted in Springfield’s last Top 10 hit with the single “Love Somebody”. The singer-songwriter went on to release a string of new albums including 1999’s “Karma”, 2004’s “Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance”, 2005’s “Day After Yesterday”, 2007’s “Christmas with You” and 2008’s “Venus in Overdrive”, all of which failed to live up to the singer’s earlier releases. In 2012 he signed with Universal’s Hip-O label through which he released the album “For the End of the World”.

Live reviews

This was a benefit show Rick Springfield organized for his guitar tech, Ruben, who is battling Stage 4 Cancer. As it was for a good cause, I pitched in more and got a private dinner with Rick and 11 other good people in the Captain's Room in the Sunset Strip House of Blues' Foundation Room. Rick was humble, gracious, funny, kind and it was a wonderful experience to just hang out and shoot the proverbial sh*t. The food and drinks were great and we took many photos that had us smiling as we left. Worth...every...penny. The show itself was quintessential Rick Springfield. For 1:15 he played his hits strewn about some newer songs that are really very good! Of course you won't hear Rick's new material on the airwaves and that really is a damn shame. He sang, played various guitars and ran about the stage, interacting with the fans and smiling nearly the entire time. He played a few songs with Elliot Easton of The Cars and John 5 of John 5, Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson. After a short intermission, an all-star band came out to play some KISS songs (KISS is Ruben's favorite band). The band included KISS' Bruce Kulick, Gilby Clarke and Kenny Aranoff. Rick joined them to sing Rocket Ride (Ruben's favorite KISS song).

The people at the House of Blues were, as they always are, professional, kind, friendly and always smiling. The venue, which will relocate in 1-2 years will be missed, but it's the people that make the venue worthwhile. All in all it was an amazing show and I only hope to look as good as Rick Springfield does at 65 years old (his birthday is the day after this review was written). If you get the chance to see Rick, DO IT! You will not be disappointed. Classic rock awesomeness.

I'd never heard of Rick Springfield, maybe because I was born in the 90s, but my mom is a fan and she really wanted to see his live show, so I bought tickets to take her for her birthday.

We saw him at the W.H. Lyon Fairgounds in Sioux Falls (South Dakota) in May, 2014. The fairgrounds is a pretty big place and, to be honest, I didn't expect many people to show up to see a guy with a hit from the 80s, but I was wrong. The place was packed! It turns out that he was also on a really popular US show and had won several Grammy Awards, so he has a huge fan base.

The show was great! He started with "Speak to the Sky" and continued with a lot of great music, including "Believe in Me," "I'm Your Superman," "American Girls," and his most popular hit, "Jessie's Girl."

The crowd was a mix of people from all age groups, men, women, all different kinds of personalities, and everyone loved the show. They were singing and dancing and really enjoying themselves. I know I did a lot of dancing, myself. Of course my mom was thrilled and I couldn't have given her a better birthday present. In fact, if I get the chance to see another Rick Springfield show, I'll go!

Australian singer/songwriter and musician Rick Springfield may have less hair these days but he still has just the same amount of talent that made him rise to fame during his heyday. His power pop was globally accepted round the world and topped numerous charts including those in the US and Australia.

His fanbase is one of high loyalty and they continue to attend his shows numerous times so Rick feels obliged to show off new versions of classic tracks, extended instrumentals with his trusty guitar as well as cover versions reimagined. One that goes over particularly well is 'Wild Thing' by The Troggs as well as an unpredicted 'Roar' by Katy Perry which sounds great with his own synonymous tones. It is his own clever medley of hits though that really sets the crowd cheering and singing to favourites such as 'Don't Walk Away' 'State Of the Heart' and 'What Kind of Fool Am I?'. Despite now being pensioner age, he shows no sign of hanging up the guitar and plectrum anytime soon.

Rick Springfield always gives a high energy, connect with the audience concert. I hope to be rocking so hard and looking so good as he does at 67! The man takes his shirt off and heads into the audience for the song Human Touch ~ it is a beautiful thing! The feeling that passes through the audience when he strums the first few chords of Jessie's Girl is worth experiencing over and over. This particular concert, at the Biltmore Estate, was mind boggling beautiful with the mountains in the background. I hope he returns year after year.

This “Stripped Down” show was one of the best concerts that I’ve ever attended! A rather small venue with just him and a “band in a box”, and personal story sharing with a slide show, provided a very intimate experience!! Got to see a whole different side of an artist that I’ve ever had before, he even came out and walked, talked, and shared hugs with the crowd during the show. This is an amazingly deep, rich-experienced man, sharing his true self. Thanks Rick!!!

Rick Springfield is rocking 70 years old and he is a natural entertainer. I have seen him in many unique settings but the Atlanta Symphony performance was one of my favorites. He played new songs and all of the oldie but goodies. I saw him for the first time when I was 11 and the 50 year old me loves him all the same.

The concert was awesome. Rick had a sore throat and still sang great. I love him and his singing. I waited a long time for him to come to my hometown and it was well worth the wait. I loved when he sang my father’s chair unplugged. He engaged the audience and told stories and jokes . I will go see him again in concert.

It was so great to have seats a few rows of center stage. I love his music, fun trip down 80's memory lane. I only hoped he would not have (talked) so much through his half of the concert. I paid a lot to hear him perform his music. I also loved, loved Richard Marx❤

Rick's performance was amazing. He personally interacted with the audience. I loved the stories he shared. He played songs the audience knew along with some new songs. I highly recommend that if Rick is in your town you need to go see him!!

1985 Rick Springfield – Tao

rick springfield tao tour

With Tao, Springfield decided to experiment with new wave and synthrock. Springfield noted in a 2012 interview, “Tao had a lot of European influences and I perhaps went a little bit too far in that direction. The production was more European orientated, with the massive synths and that stuff actually did it really well in Europe, especially in Germany, ‘Celebrate Youth’ was a hit.” Springfield considers Tao to be his finest album to date. “We just had a lot of new ideas. It is probably the one I experimented on the most. Whatever I thought of we tried it. It was just when sampling was just starting, we got really into the drum sampling. But we started on just a DMX. A little DMX drum machine, all the original drum tracks were laid down on that, and then we triggered other drum samples from that. It was built up track by track. That is still my favorite album.” Springfield recalls, “I had stopped listening to American rock by 1984. In fact, I was getting increasingly interested in what was going on in other types of music, especially with artists who were English.”

In the liner notes for the collector’s edition CD of “Tao” Springfield comments, “I was going through a major depression back then, and had been for a few years. I was spiritually lost, and finding it hard to cope with everything that was going on. Even my success was causing me pain. I couldn’t come to terms with earning so much money while others were struggling to find small change even to eat. It seemed so wrong, but what could I do about it? On top of that, I had real problems dealing with my father’s death. It all meant that I was in such a mess, which is why the lyrics on the “Tao” album are definitely the darkest of my career.”
